COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

I have often wondered how much influence the Judaism of their childhood and youth played in their understanding of Marxism and the Revolution.

Anonobob: You have just said that the Jews killed Christ. The Jews didn't kill Christ.

On the contrary, it is written (1 Thess. 2:14-15):
For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews: Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men.

But thank you for playing, please drive through.

Teresita clearly disbelieves the Pontiff and the mainline Protestant Churches, who have refuted the bloody liable of deicide. Furthermore, Teresita believes it possible to kill G-d, and that she will be damned if someone does not. What does she think about the bread and wine (cannibalism: real or substitutionary)?

    1. I don't claim to know a lot about how Jewish folks interpret their own scriptures. With a lot of argumentation and disagreement, I would imagine. I do know they find much deeper meaning in these stories than is apparent to the first reading by a pair of Gentile eyes.

Some of it is quite humorous. The Lord was so upset about the misbehaviors of his darlings the he determined to flood them all out, and start again nearly from scratch.

He selected one man named Noah Quirk, and his wife, to carry on. When Noah Quirk finally made land fall, he immediately set to work planting vine yards, from which grapes he made strong wine, got dead drunk, and passed out.

Later Noah Quirk is rumored to created Vodka.

At any rate the point seems to be that the Lord hadn't very good clay to work with here on this planet.

On the other hand, another time we see Abraham arguing the Lord down from wiping out Sodom and its sister city, finally getting Him to agree to let a few of the righteous folks out. This also is quite humorous and instructive too as it seems to say a righteous man should be the measure of things.

Therefore I think the big banner headline over this thread is a big idiotic crock of manure.

Was Hitchens a lapsed Catholic? Naw, although he expressed his disdain for the Church whenever he had an audience or a drink. Did quite a job on Mother Therese. But he didn't discriminate. He pretty much hated every religion.

He was actually Jewish if you follow the matrilineal line. Not surprisingly though, he was strongly anti-Zionist.

      :)

My personal opinion is he kind of jumped the shark in his condemnation of religion as the greatest evil in the world. He gives religion much too much credit when you think of the tens of millions who died under communism, fascism, and any of the other various ism's of the 20th century.

    3. Bob,

As a general rule, Christians know nothing about Jewish texts; indeed, they know little of their own. Incredibly, the NAZIs knew their Hebrew and Judaism. Eichmann studied for years under a rabbi, who was allowed to escape. When captured, Eichmann recited, in perfect Hebrew, HaShema.

Christians have always insisted that the Tanakh must be understood literally (I should say the Christian version). That is not the case. Everything written has a point, and not always one that a literal reading will convey. The Akedah is not what it seems.

He was an interesting guy and I would have loved having a drink with him as well as the arguments that would likely ensue. I agreed with the way he thought about half the time. For instance he hated the War on Terror, NSA spying and other aspects of the Patriot act but he also turned into a neo-conservative and strong supporter of the Iraq war after 9/11 and until the time he died. The latter issue would have provided enough conversation for a bottle or two of scotch all by itself.

The thing I liked best about him was his distain for PC bullshit. An example, he was an Islamophobe and despised the way people, people in the media and politics especially, cower in terror before Muslims even to the point of being afraid to hurt their feelings or dainty sensibilities.

I would have appreciated his hedonistic habits when I was younger but the guy needed to taper off as he got older.

I think you probably mistakenly lump all Christians together when it comes to their individual beliefs about Scripture, Allen, just as I think you do the same when talking about Jewish views. Just my opinion and I don't claim to be any kind of expert.

IMO, how one views scriptures, biblical literalism both internal and external, to a large extent determines what group you fall into within the various Christian sects. Catholics, Protestant, and Fundamentalist Christians all view biblical literalism differently. I would tend thinks that the same would apply within the various Judaic traditions. Perhaps, I'm wrong.

    6. Hardly, proving the value and efficiency of stereotyping.

There are a number of sacraments and doctrines that bind all Christians, by definition.

      virgin birth
      crucifixion
      resurrection
      redemption
      eucharist
      trinity
      baptism
      hell
      return of Christ

If you tell me you are a Christian, then, I know your core beliefs. To learn which of the 2,000 denominations of Christian Churches you belong will take additional information, but really is irrelevant in the face of what I already know.

There are a number of issues dividing Christians, including the infallibility of the text, or at least someone else's text. Since there are so many Christian denominations and sects there must be a host of divisive factors in play, abortion being one. That said, orthodox Christians still hold to a core group of distinguishing doctrines.

As a Jew, I reject them all. To maintain civility, I make little of it. However, when someone uses an ancient slander, the cause of much harm, I will interject. To be fair, the pagan Greeks of Alexandria used many of the same slanders to cause harm to Jews. This was long before Christianity. The end result was a series of pogroms all over Egypt that lead to the deaths or enslavement of about one million Jews.

It should not come as a surprise that the descendants of these same Greeks founded Christianity through the apostate, Paul. Words kill, sometimes purposefully.

Had Marcion been followed, much trouble might have been avoided. He wanted to rid the Christian Church of the Hebrew Bible and the Hebrew God, both incompatible with Christianity in his opinion. He also denied that Jesus was the son of the Hebrew god; rather Jesus was the son of the “good” god of the Christians. His goal was a total break with anything Hebrew. Initially, he got some traction, but eventually it was observed that without the Jewish texts, Christians would have nothing to read. You see, there was not yet a Christian canon. Nonetheless, this heresy managed to hang on for several hundred years.

They do say he was Jewish on his mother's side.

    There was this -

". He also served on the advisory board of the Secular Coalition for America,[123] a lobbying group for atheists and humanists in Washington, DC. In 2007, Hitchens began a series of written debates on the question "Is Christianity Good for the World?" with Christian theologian and pastor, Douglas Wilson, published in Christianity Today magazine.[124] This exchange eventually became a book by the same title in 2008. During their book tour to promote the book, film producer Darren Doane sent a film crew to accompany them. Doane produced the film Collision: Is Christianity GOOD for the World?, which was released on 27 October 2009."

I know Doug Wilson. He is an idiot. Since I think Hitches was basically an idiot too, I imagine a debate between these two frauds as being between the deaf and the blind.

A little like a debate on things religious between, say, Quirk and Rufus.

He is said to have left some city or other, full of gods and hookers, the poor and a few rich, and dissatisfied headed north and west.

This was his answer to his discontent, his desire for something more, to get up and go.

This call may be depicted as coming from God, or in any other manner, but it always comes from within. It is a psychological call. Sometimes it goes unheard, or unanswered or aborts in some way. But this fellow answered his call from within.....

Men were doing evil long before Abraham. And men have done evil on a scale that would make the children of Abraham blush with envy - See: the Khan Dynasty: Siege of Baghdad.

I often find those most bitterly angry about G-d to be the most forlorn without Him. Life can be so cruel, we naturally ask, why? I have no better answer than anyone else. But I do know that in the totality of a life that is winding down I have been blessed. Psychologically, we are far more torn by our losses than our gains. Mickey Rooney once observed that he had lost his first dollar gambling at 16 and had spent the next 40 years and a million dollars trying to win it back. As Joni Mitchell sang, “You don’t what ya got till it’s gone.”

I am deeply grieved to see the condition of the world I will soon depart. All the lives lost, intelligence squandered, the resources expended in trying to find a better way to kill our fellows is such a waste. Where would man be now had he heeded the simple admonition of Micah: "O man, what does He require of thee, but to do justice, seek mercy, and walk humbly before your G-d."

I’m not a retribution kind of a guy, but the folks that are responsible for this can no longer be in positions that they can actually cause this type of damage to other unsuspecting communities,” Mayor Sokolich told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.

Gov. Christie hasn’t been directly linked to the controversial lane closures, but the direct involvement of aides at the top tier of his staff has raised many questions about his role.

      Definition of intermediary

Internet intermediaries were formerly understood to be internet service providers (ISPs).
However, questions of liability have also emerged in relation to other Internet infrastructure intermediaries, including Internet backbone providers, cable companies and mobile communications providers.

How the Muslim World Came into Being
    Raymond Ibrahim

Arabic-language websites reported earlier this week that the al-Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, which throughout the course of the war against the Assad government has committed any number of atrocities -- from decapitating "infidels" to burning churches -- has successfully "forced" two Armenian Christian families to convert to Islam.

A video accompanies some of these reports. In it, what appears to be an elderly Armenian man stands alongside an Islamic cleric who announces the Christian man's conversion to Islam -- to thunderous cries of "Allahu Akbar!" In his exultation, the cleric makes exuberant statements like "You see, we have no honor without Islam -- without crying aloud that 'There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is his prophet!'" (This appears to be another way of saying, "Only by joining our winning team can you ever escape dishonor," the lot of all non-Muslim "infidels.")

The cleric also adds that, because the man is the head of his household, his Christian wife and children are all now Muslim as well -- "all praise to Allah!" And if they reject their new Islamic identity, they become "apostates," a crime punishable by death.

The rather flippant and sarcastic text that accompanies this video on some websites points out the obvious:

After decades of peaceful coexistence between the various religions of Syria, and after decades of living under the moderate form of Levantine Islam ... these two Armenian families were none too keen on entering Islam or learning of its eminence -- except at the hands of DAASH [al-Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant], which has been presenting a "rosy" picture of Islam and Muslims, by way of chopping heads, whipping people, and general repression. Thus did these two Christian Armenian families finally enter Islam, willingly -- but only at the hands of DAASH.

In other words, it's "curious," to say the least, that Christians who for generations lived amid moderate Muslim majorities in Syria opted to remain Christian, are now "suddenly" attracted to Islam -- and at the hands of a jihadi organization that has been bombing churches, kidnapping and beheading Christians, and teaching even children to slaughter Christians wherever they may be found.

Sound like genuine conviction to you? Maybe the 2012 news that "a family of Armenian Christians was found murdered, and all members of the family horribly decapitated" in Syria is compelling these Armenian families into seeing the "wisdom" of embracing Islam?

Here we reach an important but overlooked historical point. While many Christians, past and present, have indeed willingly embraced martyrdom -- the sword, death -- rather than recant Christ for Muhammad, the majority of born Christians, when faced with converting to Islam or dying, have opted for the former. Indeed, call it a lack of idealism or a lack of faithfulness, but when faced with converting to Islam or simply being third-class subjects (dhimmis), throughout the centuries, countless nominal Christians have opted for the former.

That is precisely how and why the so-called "Islamic world" -- the majority of which was almost entirely Christian before the Islamic conquests -- came into being: a fact Westerners were well-acquainted with, before the current age of political correctness and downright deceit fell upon us.

I was looking for some article to say it and didn’t see one, so I will say it.

    I will miss Farmer Bob.

I first saw him giving tomatoes to the Food Ministry for the needy. And then I saw him at his stand across from Grocery Outlet. He was a familiar figure, and I, for one, will attend his memorial service and miss him.

When you can read the Hebrew Tanakh in Hebrew, let me know. As it now stands, tens of millions of you folks believe that a perfectly good Hebrew word for "young wife" or "young woman" means "virgin".

The sad fact is that through Jewish actors, playwrights, and producers, the Berlin stage of Weimar Germany linked Jews and deviant sexuality in all its sordid manifestations just as surely as Broadway does today.

fighter. It points me to the man who once in loneliness, surrounded
by a few followers, recognized these Jews for what they were and
summoned men to fight against them and who, God’s truth! was greatest
not as a sufferer but as a fighter. In boundless love as a Christian
and as a man I read through the passage which tells us how the Lord
at last rose in His might and seized the scourge to drive out of the
Temple the brood of vipers and adders. How terrific was his fight
against the Jewish poison. Today, after two thousand years, with
deepest emotion I recognize more profoundly than ever before the fact
that it was for this that He had to shed his blood upon the Cross. As
a Christian I have no duty to allow myself to be cheated, but I have
the duty to be a fighter for truth and justice… And if there is
anything which could demonstrate that we are acting rightly, it is
the distress that daily grows. For as a Christian I have also a duty
to my own people. And when I look on my people I see them work and
work and toil and labor, and at the end of the week they have only
for their wages wretchedness and misery. When I go out in the morning
and see these men standing in their queues and look into their
pinched faces, then I believe I would be no Christian, but a very
devil, if I felt no pity for them, if I did not, as did our Lord two
thousand years ago, turn against those by whom today this poor people
      are plundered and exposed.”

The Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA) reports:

PGGM announced its decision to divest from Bank Hapoalim, Bank Leumi, First International Bank of Israel, Israel Discount Bank and Mizrahi Tefahot Bank… citing the pension investment firm’s “responsible investment policy”.

    The text cited the banks’
“involvement in financing Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories. This was a concern, as the settlements in the Palestinian territories are considered illegal under international humanitarian law”.

According to PGGM’s policy paper, the company excludes investing in bodies involved in “violations of fundamental human rights and labour rights”.

Needless to say, “violations of fundamental human rights” is one of Israel’s foremost areas of expertise on which it has advised and trained many a dictator and torturer, from Central and South America to sub-Saharan Africa.

So, hats off to PGGM. The boycott, divestment and sanctions momentum is building up and there’s no rolling back.
