COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

New 'life in space' hope after billions of 'habitable planets' found in Milky Way

Billions of potentially habitable planets may exist within our galaxy, the Milky Way, raising new prospects that life could exist near Earth, a study has found.

New 'life in space' hope after billions of 'habitable planets' found in Milky Way

Researchers discovered that at least 100 of the ''super-Earths'' may be on our galactic doorstep, at distances of less than 30 light years, or about 180 trillion miles, from the sun.
Astronomers say the findings were made after conducting a survey of red dwarf stars, which account for about four in five stars in the Milky Way.
They calculate that around 40 per cent of red dwarfs have a rocky planet not much bigger than Earth orbiting the ''habitable zone'', in which liquid surface water can exist.
Scientists say that where there is water, there also could be life although they add that being in the habitable zone is no guarantee that life has evolved on a planet.
Dr Xavier Bonfils, from Grenoble University in France, who led the international team, said: ''Because red dwarfs are so common - there are about 160 billion of them in the Milky Way - this leads us to the astonishing result that there are tens of billions of these planets in our galaxy alone.''
In their study, the team of astronomers surveyed a carefully chosen sample of 102 red dwarfs using the European Southern Observatory's 3.6-metre telescope at La Silla, Chile.
A total of nine super-Earths - planets with masses between one and 10 times that of Earth - were found. Two were located within the habitable zones of the stars Gliese 581 and Gliese 667 C.
These data were combined with other observations, including those of stars which did not have planets.
The astronomers, whose research was reported in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics, worked out that habitable zone super-Earths orbiting red dwarfs occurred with a frequency of around 41 per cent.
Meanwhile massive planets similar to Jupiter and Saturn were rare around red dwarfs. Less than 12 per cent of the stars were expected to have such ''gas giants''.
Because red dwarfs are common near the sun, many ''super-Earths'' may not be far away in astronomical terms. The scientists estimate there could be around 100 habitable zone planets within 30 light years.
Red dwarfs are cooler than the sun, which means planets must orbit close to their parent stars to be warm enough to be habitable. Scientists said this might not be good news for life.
Dr Stephane Udry, from Geneva Observatory, who is also a member of the international team, added: "The habitable zone around a red dwarf, where the temperature is suitable for liquid water to exist on the surface, is much closer to the star than the Earth is to the sun.
''But red dwarfs are known to be subject to stellar eruptions or flares, which may bathe the planet in X-rays or ultraviolet radiation, and which may make life there less likely.''
Nasa says that one light year is the equivilent of nearly six trillion miles.F

Currently, all new gasoline-powered cars sold in the U.S. are flex-fuel cars, but only about 5 percent are being sold as such. The rest are being marketed with their flex-fuel capability disabled by their manufacturers.

This is a very curious situation. One may well ask, why should an automaker choose to disable a useful feature that it has built into its cars? It seems to make no sense for any company to take measures to degrade its own product. Furthermore, given the fact that the auto industry has a fundamental interest in low fuel prices — consumers have only so much they can spend on transportation, and it either goes for cars or for gas — why should it choose to cripple a capability that otherwise could serve to erode prices at the pump? It seems like a very bizarre policy — until you look at who owns and controls the auto companies.

The problem is that the automobile companies are not independent entities capable of pursuing their own interests. Rather, they are owned and controlled by organizations that are much more heavily invested in oil.

  18. When GM went bankrupt, the president appointed Wall Street insider Steven Rattner as his auto czar, charged with reorganizing America’s leading automaker. However, instead of forcing GM to implement flex-fuel capability across the board, Rattner fired GM CEO Rick Wagoner, who was making tentative moves in that direction, and replaced him with Ed Whitacre, a director of Exxon. Subsequently, Rattner moved Whitacre up to be GM’s chairman of the board, giving the CEO position to Dan Akerson, a managing director of the Carlyle Group, a Saudi-funded business partnership. Under this new “friends of OPEC” management, Wagoner’s earlier commitment to have half of all GM cars be flex fuel by 2012 was, not surprisingly, shelved.

    My original comment still applies.

I have no problem with his assertion that the government should be doing more to push the auto companies to expedite their offerings of flex-fuel vehicles especially where they hold a stake in companies such as GM.

That's his opinion, one shared by many, though given the performance so far of the Volt, I question whether the government has the expertise required. But that's another question.

Where I have problems with his column is that he starts out explaining a conspiracy where he says the auto companies are disabling their own vehicles because they are 'controlled' by big oil.

One, perhaps their is proof that the auto industry are 'disabling' their vehicles; but we sure as heck don't get that proof from this guy. We don't even get an explanation of how they are 'disabling' the cars.

Two, he states rather categorically that car company policy is determined by big oil (rather than things like, oh I don't know, maybe EPA rulings doubling fuel economy requirements, or the price of oil, or customer demand). However, the info he provides while interesting is hardly fully convincing.

    Example: Ford

He states Ford policy is controlled by big oil because

    1. Ford received $23 billion in loans from Wall Street including some from Citicorp in which Prince bin Talal (Saudi Arabia) owns $9 billion in stock.

    2. John Lawson Thorton is a director on the boards of both Ford and Newscorp. Prince bin Talal (Saudi Arabia) owns 5.7% of Newscorp.

    3. Ford received $450 million from Kuwait for the Aston martin sale.

    Scary convincing except

    1. The "loans" granted Ford were part of its restructuring that took place when Mullaly came in. Most have called it a genius move given what happened subsequently. Establishing a quid pro quo associated with the loans requires something more than this guy saying it was so.

He specifically points out Citicorp as the villain here, yet the 2006 loans were managed by not only Citi but also JPM and GS, and since they were chosen to 'arrange' the loan agreements its unlikely all the money came from them. Then when you consider Talal has about 10% of Citi, its hard to see how much influence he can apply especially when the Ford family voting as a block controls 40% of the Ford voting stock. What they say goes.

    2. Thorton is a Director on Ford and on Newscorp and bin Talal owns 5.7% of Newscorp? So what? Ford has 21 directors on its Board. Nine of them work for Ford. The balance work for companies ranging from Healthcare to Defense to Pharma. How many of the 21 do you think sit on Boards of other companies. As I said the connections appear to be something Glenn Beck would put up on his black board to explain how the US is being taken over by commies and the CFR.

    3. Ford sold Astin martin to David Richards, an auto racing entrepreneur and also the founder of Prodrive Ltd. The latter also runs the Aston Martin racing program. Richards was supported by investment by Kuwait's Investment Dar Co.

Ford sold the friggin company, just like they did Volvo and Jaguar. What's this got to do with 'Big Oil"?

In my opinion, the guy's theory is tenuous, real tenuous.

  41. Panthers in deep do-do --

    Will Florida Prosecute Holder's People?
    Russ Vaughn

For those of you who have been wondering, yes, it is probably illegal for the New Black Panthers to offer a 'dead or alive" reward for George Zimmerman. Over at Pajamas Media, J. Christian Adams, the former justice department lawyer who resigned in protest against Eric Holder's refusal to prosecute this same NBPP organization for voter intimidation in Philadelphia, has spelled out just how the hate group's actions may be prosecutable by Florida authorities:

So what crimes may have the New Black Panthers committed in Florida with their threats toward George Zimmerman?

Let's start with solicitation to kidnap. In announcing a reward for the seizure of Zimmerman, the New Black Panthers may have violated Florida Code 787.01. It makes it a felony to "by threat, confining or abducting, or imprisoning another person against his . . . will without lawful authority with intent to . . . terrorize."

Merely soliciting someone else to do this is also a felony in Florida under Florida Code 777.04. "A person who solicits another to commit an offense prohibited by law and in the course of such solicitation commands, encourages, hires, or requests another person to engage in specific conduct which would constitute such offense or an attempt to commit such offense commits the offense of criminal solicitation."

    And this:

The solicitation and threat to seize Zimmerman may also constitute a crime under Florida Code 876.35. The felony of "combination against part of the people of the state" occurs when someone is unlawfully seized by a mob, or at the behest of a mob. Think of a small town jail 100 years ago and an angry crowd, armed with rope, demanding a particular inmate. Sound familiar?

Florida Code 876.35 defines the crime: "to remove them forcibly out of this state, or to remove them from their habitations to any other part of the state by force, or [when people] shall assemble for that purpose." Remember, solicitation to commit a crime is in itself a crime.

Florida Code 876.34 even makes it a felony to "interfere forcibly in the administration of the government."

Additionally, according to Adams, Trayvon Martin, himself, may have been in violation of an "oddball" Florida law which accords protections to those individuals engaged in neighborhood watch activities. The existence of such a law carries with it the possibility that Martin, whether or not he was otherwise innocent of any criminal intent, violated Florida law by aggressively challenging Zimmerman's inquiries.

According to Breibart.com, even the left-leaning the Southern Poverty Law Center has labeled the New Black Panther Party as "a virulently racist and anti-Semitic organization whose leaders have encouraged violence against whites, Jews and law enforcement officers." Breitbart notes that the SPLC also says that the New Black Panthers believe American blacks should form a separate black nation. Eric Holder would a great choice for first Minister of Justice.

There is, of course, no chance that the House Republican budget will be adopted by the Democratic Senate this year, and no chance that President Obama will adopt it.

    ...

President Obama has successfully turned voters’ attention away from our most significant problems in recent months, and he surely hopes to keep them distracted through the election. But just as they did last year, House Republicans have the opportunity to recapture the agenda—not by distracting voters from our problems but by offering real solutions and daring the Democrats to offer their own.

We can only hope that the Republican presidential candidate has the good sense to follow their lead.

Poet Adrienne Rich, 82, has died
    March 28, 2012 | 1:46 pm

Adrienne Rich, a pioneering feminist poet and essayist who challenged what she considered to be the myths of the American dream, has died. She was 82.

The recipient of such literary awards as the Yale Young Poets prize, the National Book Award, the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize and the Dorothea Tanning Award given by the Academy of American Poets, Rich died Tuesday at her home in Santa Cruz of complications from long-term rheumatoid arthritis, said a son, Pablo Conrad.

She came of age during the social upheavals of the 1960s and '70s and was best known as an advocate of women's rights, which she wrote about in both her poetry and prose. But she also wrote passionate antiwar poetry and took up the causes of the marginalized and underprivileged.

From her first book of poems in the early 1950s, Rich, a Baltimore native who attended Radcliffe College, showed her feminist bearings. Twenty years later, her image was set when universities began introducing courses in women's studies and Rich was among the most likely writers to be included.

Selected for the National Medal for the Arts in 1997, the highest award given to artists, Rich refused it.

“The radical disparities of wealth and power in America are widening at a devastating rate,” she wrote in a letter addressed to then-President Clinton. “A president cannot meaningfully honor certain token artists while the people at large are so dishonored.”

A full obituary will follow at latimes.com/obits.
