“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Mt Etna Brings in New Year Italian Style, a Little Late.

Sicily's mount Etna volcano erupts - video

Sicily's mount Etna has erupted for the first time this year, spewing lava and sending a plume of ash 5,000 metres into the air. The eruptions are a regular occurrence, and although spectacular, do not usually result in damage to property or injury. Flights are not expected to be disrupted by the ash cloud

It could have been worse:

  1. A mere baby's belch.

  2. Mt. Etna is the world we faced before the defense cuts, Mt. St. Helens is the world we will face with the defense cuts.

    Mountains in metaphor.
