COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

The Egyptian Army still rules the roost.

  6. Some of the Egyptians finally figured it out.

"The ex-regime is still controlling the country,"
says Wafik Ghitany, a member of the liberal Wafd party, expressing an increasingly common sentiment.
"The military council is the same one that was headed by Mubarak himself."

  7. Seems that the US played Egypt "just right". It has been six months since the "Revolution" and the status que remains in place.

No Islamification of the government, there, in Egypt. The song remains the same, our proxies were in charge, they still are.

    Well done USA!

  9. The man who invented the teleprompter has died at the age of 91.

When President Obama heard the news, he was speechless.

  10. US recognizes Libyan rebels.

That's a good thing, because previously when we didn't recognize the rebels, we confused them with loyalists, and they ate a lot of 500 pound bombs.

  11. Two U.S. Navy ships are finally headed to the scrap heap without ever having sailed and despite the fact that they’re almost completely finished.

Oh well, the "stimulus" was the important thing.

  12. Ms T

God Bless you, may God bless the doctors with wisdom and ability to knock it out of you.

I missed your humor and candor.

  13. Thanks Gag and Bob and Rufus and everyone.

“The fact that we’re here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign — is a sign of leadership failure. Leadership means the buck stops here. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better. I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase America’s debt limit.”~ Senator Barack Obama, 2006

  14. My cousin has been battling stage 4 pancreatic since Oct. Right now he is on an aggressive three day I.V. chemo treatment once a week.

He says besides his wife and close family there is nothing more than the words of encouragement from friends to help him through this difficult time. Reading his page and knowing he has that keeps his spirits high and the will to keep going.

My thoughts and prayers are with you. Stay strong and know we're all thinking of you.

  15. Pancreatic is pretty much a death sentence. Sorry to hear about that, Melody.

The kind of breast cancer I have has a poor prognosis too, but I won't give up, because giving up is not an option.

I consider my illness a gift from God, in a way, because I wasn't ready before this. Nothing bad ever happened to me, so I didn't need Christ, and I had slipped into agnosticism.

Five hundred years from now, after I have attained the eternal life that is my destiny (I hope), I will look back with gratitude for something that looks like a tragedy to me now.

  18. I have this bookmarked but haven't been able to check it....I can emphathize with teresita.....the reason I haven't checked this site is because for the past 7 months, I've been battling stage 4 breast cancer (came back from the first time 6 years ago and was in my lung and on my spine). I'm now in remission so I know it can happen to you. I've been told by my oncologist that from now on it will be in and out of remission, but I'm alive and back in the fight.
