COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

“Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it. Every concept that can ever be needed will be expressed by exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined and all its subsidiary meanings rubbed out and forgotten.

By 2050, earlier, probably – all real knowledge of Oldspeak will have disappeared. The whole literature of the past will have been destroyed. Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, Byron – they’ll exist only in Newspeak versions, not merely changed into something different, but actually changed into something contradictory of what they used to be. Even the literature of the Party will change. Even the slogans will change. How could you have a slogan like ‘freedom is slavery’ when the concept of freedom has been abolished? The whole climate of thought will be different. In fact there will be no thought, as we understand it now. Orthodoxy means not thinking – not needing to think. Orthodoxy is unconsciousness.” (George Orwell, 1984)

Lewis’ health ailments over the years included open-heart surgery in 1983, surgery for prostate cancer in 1992, treatment for his dependence on prescription drugs in 2003, a heart attack in 2006 and a long bout with pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic lung disease for which he took Prednisone, causing his face and body to balloon.

At the peak of their popularity, Martin & Lewis ruled nightclubs, radio and then the box office with their breezy yet physical comedy act, reigning as the top draw at theaters from 1950-56.

After an especially acrimonious break-up with his partner, Lewis remained as the No. 1 movie draw through the mid-1960s on the strength of such classics as The Bellboy (1960) and The Nutty Professor (1963). As Paramount’s biggest star, he had the creative freedom to make the moves he wanted to make.

Lewis also was known for his efforts as national chairman of the Muscular Dystrophy Assn. He devoted more than a half-century to fighting the neuromuscular disease, hosting an annual Labor Day telethon — and raising nearly $2.5 billion — from 1955 until he was ousted before the 2011 telecast. Horse manure: USC Mascot in the gun sights of the history scrubbers
    By Rick Moran

The website Vice has suggested we blow up Mount Rushmore. Protesters in New York demanded the statue of Teddy Roosevelt be taken down from in front of the Metropolitian Library. There have been demands that we remove the Washington Monument and Jefferson Memorial. There have been calls to change the names of schools, towns, cities, and tourist attractions. Any and all mentions of confederate generals and politicians will be erased from the public consciousness because, racism.

Pretty silly, huh? But if you want 100%, dyed in the wool, out of this world silly, how about activists at the University of Southern California who tried to connect the beloved and stirring mascot of the school - the white steed "Traveler" - with the horse rode by General Robert E. Lee, who he named "Traveller."....

Media contortions protect their established narrative in Boston
    By Thomas Lifson

Something dramatic and important happened yesterday in Boston, but the mainstream provided a counter narrative to mask the shame of it all. The media violated the normal rules of the TV news game – if it bleeds it leads and find a victim -- in order to protect the sacred resistance narrative’s presumptive good guys.

The real story of yesterday is that the Boston Police there advised a small crowd of free speech advocates – nary a white supremacist among the speakers – to stop the program early and [I paraphrase] “RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!” I am sure they said it a bit more diplomatically, that the group’s safety could not be guaranteed as a mob of 20,000 approached. The crowd had warmed up and psyched up by marching and chanting their way 2.4 miles from Roxbury Crossing. Antifa, with a record of violence was on hand. The police advised evacuation. To protect them from the throngs already assembled, they put them into police wagons and ferried them to safety.

The only violence and arrests (“dozens” according to ABC News) were on the left, including a disgusting attack on an elderly woman that pushed her and Old Glory to the ground.

Boston police were even attacked with bottles of urine and tweeted out a plea for “individuals” to stop it.

Absolutely no groups are ever to be associated with this vicious act, and none were in the maor media that did manage to cover the attack, so far as I saw. But I am reasonably sure that none of the free speech crowd threw urine at the police as they were being sheltered from a hostile throng and given safe haven. But that sort of thing is best left to inference in the media's view. You can find many of the bare facts in the narrative mentioned above and none of the finger pointing in the statement and answers to reporters made by Boston Police Commissioner William Evans. It is well worth the minute and half it takes. Hat tip: Jim Hoft.

Oddly enough, some of the most illuminating commentary on the day came from antifa itself, which was far more honest than the media. Joshua Caplan collected some choice tweets in which @AntifaBoston chortled over getting the “idiots Democrats” to side with them and bragging about media support.

(If you have the time, check out the @BostonAntifa Twitter feed. It leaves no doubt about how far left this violent mob is.

The establishment has got its narrative and its sticking to it.

I guess it is hate speech to frame the story with the drama and victims prominent in the story when the wrong people are being persecuted.

They look like friendly service dogs. But these canines are specially trained to pick up vapors from explosives wafting through the air from suicide vests, belts and backpacks. They can pick up the scent of a suicide bomber from several football fields away.

The police now have at least eight vapor-wake dogs, each named after a fallen NYPD officer. They’re as part of a department effort to boost security at concerts and other places where large groups of people gather.

The USS John S. McCain collided with a merchant ship near Singapore early Monday, and U.S. Navy officials say search and rescue operations are underway for missing sailors. The guided-missile destroyer reportedly suffered damage to its port side. Officials said the incident happened around 6:30 a.m. local time in the Strait of Malacca as the ship was headed for Singapore for a routine port visit. The ship was commissioned in 1994 and is named for both the father and grandfather of Sen. John McCain, both of whom were onetime U.S. Navy admirals. In June, seven U.S. sailors were killed when another destroyer, the USS Fitzgerald, crashed into a merchant ship off Japan. Last week, the Navy relieved that ship's top commanders from their posts, citing "serious mistakes."

  18. Sources: Pence, McMaster team up to push more troops in Afghanistan
By NAHAL TOOSI and ELIANA JOHNSON 08/18/2017 04:34 PM EDT Updated 08/18/2017 06:48 PM EDT

Top administration officials in favor of sending more troops to Afghanistan teamed up ahead of a high-level meeting on Friday to persuade President Donald Trump to step up American military involvement in the 16-year-old war, two sources told POLITICO.

Vice President Mike Pence and national security adviser H.R. McMaster rehearsed their pitch heading into the Camp David strategy session in an effort to persuade Trump to accept commanders' proposals to beef up the 8,400 American troops in the country, the sources said.

But as of Friday evening, the president had not announced a decision on his plans for Afghanistan, where the Taliban have grown in strength and Al Qaeda and the Islamic State terrorist groups have a foothold. And no announcement appeared imminent.

The two sources — an administration official and a senior White House aide — also confirmed that Erik Prince, founder of the former Blackwater private security firm, had been scheduled to attend the session but that he was blocked at the last minute. The administration official said McMaster was the one who blocked Prince.

Prince has been urging the administration publicly and privately to outsource much of the war effort — which primarily involves training and advising Afghan security forces. Prince had the backing of Steve Bannon, who was ousted Friday from his role as the chief White House strategist.....

BURIED deep beneath the Montana soil in America’s northwest are 150 giant Minuteman III nuclear missiles — locked, loaded and ready to go.

They are 20 times more powerful than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima and can reach any target on the planet in half an hour.

They stand ready to be deployed at any moment of the day, on the order of US President Donald Trump, who this month promised North Korea a “fire and fury like the world has never seen”.

“I think this is a very dangerous time — perhaps the most dangerous threat that we’ve faced since the Cuban missile crisis,” former US Secretary of Defence Leon Panetta said.

Tensions between America and North Korea have been simmering for months, reaching a frightening war of words in recent weeks.

The two countries have exchanged threats and counter threats over recent weeks, with the world watching nervously.
And should they boil over, it’s from this location that Trump’s “fire and fury” will be unleashed.
Channel Nine’s 60 Minutes program received a rare look at the nuclear facility in Montana, which is just part of the mega arsenal that serves as a deterrent.

There are countless just like it, with some 450 “super nukes” in stockpile.

It’s a never-ending operation to be ready, with constant training on how to maintain and handle the weapons.
Master sergeant Jennifer Hubner said should the call from the White House come, she and her colleagues were ready.
“None of us come to work hoping today’s the day. But we hope our enemies think twice before they decide to use weapons of mass destruction against us or our allies.”

That includes Australia, with Hubner declaring: “We’ve got your back”.

He believes the Federal Government should consider building its own nuclear weapons chest.
“You have to protect your country,” he said.

“There could come a moment in time that (Kim) could also have to face it may be the end of his regime, when he decides that pushing the button (will mean) history will remember him.”

What happens should nuclear war occur is a total unknown, he said.

It would almost certainly result in hundreds of thousands, if not millions of death, with devastation on an unprecedented scale.

“And how does that play out in the rest of the world? We’re not sure how it comes to an end.”

The top US military officer says the United States wants to peacefully resolve a deepening standoff with North Korea but is also ready to use the "full range" of its military capabilities in case of provocation. -South Korean military exercises that enrage the North each year could make diplomacy even more hard. The Japanese defence ministry wants to introduce a land-based missile defence system called "Aegis Ashore" to address North Korea's missile threats and has chose to seek funding in the next fiscal year to cover the system design costs, a Japanese defence official told Reuters.

  25. That leaves Mr. Trump facing the potential consequence of his own threats. If he lets Mr. Tillerson try to negotiate a freeze of nuclear and missile tests in North Korea, as many experts argue he should, he will have delayed the crisis, but not resolved it.

If he orders more cyber and electronic attacks, he may delay progress on weapons, but little else. And yet the military options he has so openly threatened may prove hollow.

“There is no such thing as a surgical strike against North Korea,” Bruce Bennett, a North Korea expert at the RAND Corporation, said in one of its recent publications. “We don’t really know for sure where all their weapons are.’’

Analysts estimate that the repairs could easily cost more than a half-billion dollars, more than twice what the repairs to the USS Cole cost, largely due to extensive damage to sensitive electronic combat systems equipment. The collision heavily damaged one of her SPY radar arrays, and may have twisted the superstructure they are mounted on. The SPY radar is the centerpiece of the destroyer’s AEGIS Weapon System that enables her air defense and ballistic missile defense missions, and must be precisely mounted and aligned.

H.R. McMaster endorsed book telling US military to kiss Qur’an

AUGUST 20, 2017 6:17 PM BY ROBERT SPENCER

McMaster is proceeding on the theory, which is almost universally taken for granted by the foreign policy establishment, that showing respect for the Qur’an and Islam will take the teeth out of the jihadi claim that the U.S. is at war with Islam, and win hearts and minds, resulting in reciprocal gestures of respect. But in reality, jihadis see this solicitude for the Qur’an as a sign that the Infidels know that Islam is true, and that Allah is granting the Muslims victory over them. And they look with contempt upon American weakness.

This is the kind of thinking that Trump seemed to have promised to sweep out. Instead, it is more entrenched than ever......

Trump's Unintended Consequences: The Republican Party Reveals Itself
    By David Prentice

I think that the Sermon on the Mount applies to the vast majority of Republican Party officialdom right now.

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.”

The Republican Party once was the party of conservatives. It still is the only place any conservative can be elected in today’s political world. So far. Unfortunately, the party of Reagan has disappeared. Trump did not make them disappear, but his improbable run, and win, has revealed who the party really is.

    And it ain’t pretty.

It’s been apparent for a while that they are the stupid party. But I never thought they were this stupid.

It’s been apparent for a long time they had Stockholm Syndrome. Captured by the left, they have been cowed into being spineless mushes afraid to be called names. But I never thought it was this bad.

It’s been apparent for a while this is a party interested in taking a back seat, as long as they get money, perks, and some kind of fame. But I never thought it was this corrupt.

Something has gone very wrong since Trump ascended. And it’s not him. He’s virtually the only one trying to do the right things. At this point, it’s clear we have a combination of sick factions in the GOP, and none of them give a damn about the party’s voters, none of them give a damn about the principles they claim to have stood for in the past years, and none of them have a clue about what they are doing.

What has this party done since Trump saved their bacon, keeping them in the majority, saving them from becoming a worthless second fiddle to a corrupt Hillary? Nothing. Just nothing. And now worse than nothing. I am not the first to say this, but let’s be clear, the GOP has become a party of spineless wimps and frauds. They have betrayed half of America, betrayed the base that once supported them so well, and also betrayed their country.

They have been watching fecklessly as the left is destroying the agenda they were sent to put into place. They have been sitting on their hands while the left has been destroying their own party’s president, not only doing nothing, but often actively helping the left in their attempts to take him down.

They allowed this nonsense of Russia!Russia!Russia! to fester, knowing it was nonsense (and yes, it’s provable that they all knew). None of them stepped up to the plate to tell the left, the media, the public and the world that it was an asinine construct that had no evidence and simply wasn’t true.

Instead of actively coming against this pack of lies, they sat on their hands and let the dumbest narrative ever pressed into American politics fester into something almost half of the country psychotically believes. They also sat on their hands as the left attacked Trump, his cabinet, and his family about anything and everything. They watched like sheep as the agenda we voted has been neutered, all the while they, the GOP, were doing nothing, nothing at all.

It’s been a deadly mix of laziness, Stockholm Syndrome, and spineless, unprincipled crap. Add to that a few more ingredients: money grubbing from donors (who did not want what their voters wanted), along with the simple faithless actions of a lot of them. They were hoping against hope that their friends the #NeverTrumps would finally prevail and be able to say they told us so. Add the renewed iciness of their own base toward their party, and………

You have mixed a toxic drink that could virtually leave the GOP in shambles.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No, most of them don’t know it, they are simply too stupid, spineless, dishonest and money grubbing to understand just how awful they look to their own voters. They lost the election of 2006 and 2008 for similar reasons, the base simply checked out and stayed home. Even back then, the bad GOP wasn’t this bad.

At this point, there are only a few ways this can go. The voters that got excited about Trump and his America First agenda might stay home. They might try to get rid of party leaders (liars all), taking many of them out through primaries and other party arrangements. One more possibility: you could have a wave of resolved anger sweep through the center right voting base. If it comes to that, the cold civil war could become pretty dang hot. Whichever way it goes, the GOP will never be the same.

You think I’m advocating violence? Not at all. Sorry Charlie, that’s what the Neville Chamberlain Republicans did by signing a peace treaty with the left. Peace in their time. Oops, that didn’t end peacefully the first time?

Good grief, the GOP has sat on its hands as the Republic we once knew has descended into mob rule; the things we believed in have been mocked, derided, and called every name in the book. They virtually looked the other way as one of their own congressmen got shot. They have given us the equivalent of Jeb Bush for legislators. The majorities that we voted in are a bunch of mealy mouthed, clueless fools who spent all their money as did Jeb to get three delegates.

GOP: You promised us an immediate repeal and replacement of Obamacare, and after nine months of absurdities, you not only failed, but you did nothing to discipline those who made it fail. Paul Ryan is still speaker, McConnell majority leader, the senators who prevented this promise from being enacted were turncoats and received no consequences from their leadership.

Other than ratify some good judges, nothing else has been done by Congress.

The GOP watched the left, through their toady media shills, and their fractured foolishness, take down everything we voted for.

Now the GOP is clucking about a ginned-up narrative concerning Charlottesville. They’re now blaming Trump for telling the truth: that the violence of the Antifa, and the leftist groups is just as bad as the Nazi skin heads, and just as unforgiveable. They’re kowtowing like cowards to things that never happened and to made up narratives. They’re running away because they can’t stand to be called racist. They’re watching as history is being rewritten, and they’re allowing their base to be tarred as racists, bigots, and Nazis. Trust me, that will not go well.

It’s never been this bad, because the GOP has never been this bad. And we now know because Trump inadvertently shined the light of truth on who they really are. The election of Trump revealed the party of frauds. It was never his intention, but that’s what has happened. They have been undressed before the whole world. They have no clothes.

What is a nation who has been lied to by both parties supposed to do? What is the base of the GOP going to do?

I don’t know, but I do know I’ve never seen the center right base so disgusted and angry at its own. GOP: Trust me, the base hasn’t left Trump, but it has left you. It’s not official yet, but the avalanche is about to begin. The anger is going to boil over. Upon you. GOP: you’re not going to like it, but you have no one to blame but yourselves.

To the very small list of conservatives that fought the good fight: I apologize. But to the rest: You have become like the salt in the parable. Good for nothing.

  33. From James Freeman, WSJ

Struggling to find neo-Nazis to condemn in Boston on Saturday, some activists decided to attack the police instead. Or perhaps that was their objective all along. Meanwhile, a new report from Charlottesville offers some support for President Donald Trump’s interpretation of the tragic events of August 12.

Thank goodness that in our nation of 323 million people, neo-Nazis are extremely rare. But this can make the task of confronting them rather challenging. Tens of thousands of protesters descended on Boston Common Saturday in search of white supremacists to condemn at an event called the Boston Free Speech Rally. But it was unclear how many supremacists could be found within the tiny group of free speakers.

The New York Times reports that rally “participants appeared to number only in the dozens.” Among the speakers in this small group was Shiva Ayyadurai, an immigrant from India and former technology entrepreneur who holds several degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Mr. Ayyadurai, who is seeking the Republican nomination to challenge Bay State Democrat Sen. Elizabeth Warren, later tweeted, “FAKE NEWS scam saying Boston Free Speech Rally was NAZI event!”

RealClearPolitics has the video of Mr. Ayyadurai’s appearance, in which he stands in front of supporters holding signs saying, “Black Lives Do Matter” and condemns racist comments made over the years by elected Democrats.

Boston Globe columnist Jeff Jacoby summed up the day’s events with his own tweet:

The rally in a nutshell: “Excuse me,” one man innocently asked a Globe reporter, “where are the white supremacists?”

The Journal, with a Saturday article and accompanying video, did manage to find a rally attendee who described himself as “somewhat” of a white nationalist:

Fred Peck, a 66-year-old retired landscaper from Lynn, Mass., said he identifies with white nationalism because he feels white men are being “left out.”

“Affirmative action has gotten to include everyone on the planet who’s not a straight white guy,” he said.

Mr. Peck added that white nationalists “shouldn’t go to the extremes where it hurts other people,” a point of view which would seem to rule him out of the Nazi category.

For longtime readers of this column, all of this may seem like another installment in the “Life Imitates The Onion” series, and specifically evoke memories of the satirical report that 70% of the attendees at a Klan rally were undercover journalists.

    2. Continued:

But Saturday’s events weren’t funny. While thousands of very fine people may have gathered to condemn bigotry, at least some of them went to extremes that could hurt people. Fox News showed a protester assaulting a woman holding an American flag. Protesters also pelted police with rocks and bottles filled with urine. The Associated Press reports that 33 protesters taken into custody will be in court this week. “Arraignments are set for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in Boston Municipal Court,” says the A.P.

It’s unclear exactly how many of those present were very fine, but coverage of the event revealed significant numbers of “Antifa” activists wearing masks. CNN calls this “a tactic known as ‘black bloc’ that aims to unify demonstrators’ efforts and hide their identities.” Journal reader Kathleen Schauer asks why this is necessary if people are showing up to promote a righteous cause.

In any case, Bostonians are certainly relieved that no deaths resulted from Saturday’s events. Meanwhile, the local paper in Charlottesville, Virginia has new information about the events that culminated in an alleged white supremacist driving his car into a crowd of protesters and killing Heather Heyer on August 12.

This column was highly skeptical of the President’s claim that there were very fine people on both sides in the Charlottesville demonstrations. Specifically, your humble correspondent deemed it unlikely that a non-racist who simply opposed the destruction of statues would stick around once it was clear that participating in the protest would mean demonstrating alongside neo-Nazis.

But is it possible some people stayed in an attempt to prevent violence? Now comes an interview in Charlottesville’s Daily Progress newspaper with C.J. Ross, a member of a group called the “Three Percenters.” According to the Daily Progress:

In fact, there were two groups of ideologically opposite and armed militia in Charlottesville for the rally. And, while the rally erupted into physical violence, no shots were fired.

Instead, members of the Three Percenters and the Redneck Revolt, a left-leaning militia, said they attempted to thwart fights and provide emergency medical care.

“Probably 80 percent of our members served in Afghanistan or Iraq, so [the violence] wasn’t that big of a deal to them. They know how to handle situations,” Ross said. “Most organizations like us [and the Revolt] train on a regular basis, so it’s no surprise that no shots were fired. We disagree politically [with the Redneck Revolt], but they’re good people.”

      The Daily Progress adds:

Ross said that although the rally didn’t go as they expected, he believes the militia’s presence helped to prevent escalating violence.

“I feel in some ways that, if we weren’t there, things may have been worse. Many people appreciated it and many people didn’t,” Ross said. “We don’t like Nazis. We don’t like Antifa. But they both have the right to speak, and that’s what we defend. We wanted to support the Constitution and help keep things peaceful.

Kudos to the Daily Progress for continuing to help readers try to understand the events of August 12 after most of the media pack has moved on.

    1. Naval Ops Chief: Global “Operational Pause” After Two Deadly Collisions
ED MORRISSEYPosted at 4:41 pm on August 21, 2017

The chief of operations for the US Navy has decided that twice is enough. Admiral John Richardson called for a global “operational pause” after the second major collision by naval warships this summer. Richardson announced that “this trend needs more forceful action,” although the current priority is locating the ten missing sailors from the USS John S. McCain:

Declaring that ”this trend needs more forceful action,” Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson called Monday morning for a global fleet-wide operational pause in order to understand the causes of the service’s spate of fatal at-sea collisions this year.

“I want our fleet commanders to get together with their leaders and their commands to ensure we’re taking all appropriate and immediate actions to ensure safe and effective operations around the world,” Richardson said in a video released Monday morning.

Defense Secretary James Mattis told reporters shortly afterward that the review would have a broad scope. Mattis also pledged transparency for the results:

“The Chief of Naval Operations’ broader inquiry will look at all related accidents, incidents at sea, that sort of thing. He is going to look at all factors, not just the immediate ones — that will fall rightly under the fleet commanders investigation of what happened to his ship. This is a broader look at what is happening,” Mattis said to reporters traveling with him in Jordan. …

The fleet-wide inquiry ordered by Richardson will “look into these incidents and to determine any of the causal factors to determine what’s going on, both immediate contributors to this incident but also any related factors. Once we have those facts we’ll share them with you,” Mattis said.
According to CNN, the pause won’t take place all at the same time. Each command will take one full day to review their operations, but will not put off critical missions:.....
