COLLECTIVE MADNESS
“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."
I blew a sip of very good Chilean red table wine through my nose last night when I heard Trump refer to Stephanopoulos as "Little George."
ReplyDeleteIf you are black, you are an oppressed victim. Again, you are determined by the group to which you belong. Not only is freedom eliminated, but free will.
ReplyDeleteBut not so fast! Notice the sleight of hand: authorized victims of the left do not have free will. Rather, they are wholly conditioned by circumstances and "root causes," so It's Not Their Fault. Not so for beneficiaries of White Privilege: they not only have free will, but a malevolent free will that creates and oppresses victims.
Thus, only white people have free will. Hey, don't blame me. I'm not the racist. The left is.

DeleteAlabama Senate Primary: Roy Moore 50.3, Luther Strange 32.2
ReplyDeleteFormer Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore is enjoying an eighteen point lead over incumbent Senator Luther Strange, 50.3% to 32.2%. Earlier this week, JMC Analytics surveyed the contest and found a nearly identical lead for Moore, 51% over Strange’s 32%. Strange wins non-evangelicals (48.2% to 26%), older Millennials and younger Gen Xers (32.6% to 29.9%), somewhat liberal (32.1% to 30.5%) and very liberal voters (20.8% to 8.2%), and voters in the Mobile area (46.8% to 42.3%).
Moore wins everyone else. He dominates every other age bracket, leads Strange among evangelicals by almost thirty points (57.5% to 27.9%) and leads among very conservative voters by a similar margin (61.6% to 29.2%). Regionally, he is the solid favorite in Huntsville (54.2% to 29.3%), Montgomery (57.4% to 21.7%), and leads in Strange’s home metro region of Birmingham by double digits (46.3% to 35%).

Endgame: Mitch McConnell’s Job Approval Falls … To Nine Percent
DeleteALLAHPUNDITPosted at 1:31 pm on August 23, 2017
Nine percent. This same poll from PPP has Vladimir Putin’s favorable rating among Americans at 11 percent. McConnell’s less popular than Putin, than war, than famine — than even a Republican health-care bill.

This makes three gruesome polls for McConnell in as many days. A poll of Kentucky published Monday, also by PPP, had him at 18 percent in his home state. A survey conducted by former Trump campaign pollster Tony Fabrizio released yesterday put him at 27/44 nationally, down 25 net points since June. Now here’s PPP with a new national number so unspeakably awful it can’t possibly be accurate. Can it?......

Fears of cyber-attack as Navy fires 7th Fleet commander after collisions - 8/23/17

McClatchy:
DeleteThe Pentagon won't yet say how the USS John S. McCain was rammed by an oil tanker near Singapore, but red flags are flying as the Navy's decades-old reliance on electronic guidance systems increasing looks like another target of cyberattack.
The incident – the fourth involving a Seventh Fleet warship this year – occurred near the Strait of Malacca, a crowded 1.7-mile-wide waterway that connects the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea and accounts for roughly 25 percent of global shipping.
"When you are going through the Strait of Malacca, you can't tell me that a Navy destroyer doesn't have a full navigation team going with full lookouts on every wing and extra people on radar," said Jeff Stutzman, chief intelligence officer at Wapack Labs, a New Boston, New Hampshire, cyber intelligence service.
"There's something more than just human error going on because there would have been a lot of humans to be checks and balances," said Stutzman, a former information warfare specialist in the Navy.
Chief of Naval Operations, Adm. John Richardson, did not rule out cyber intrusion or sabotage as a cause of the fatal collision. "No indications right now ... but review will consider all possibilities," Richardson said in a tweet on Monday.

MS-M-N-BC was doing this kind of blow by blow as the speech was taking place, the screen being divided between The Donald on one side and the gasbagger on the other.
I was hoping The Donald would pardon Sheriff Joe right then and there on stage. That would have caused a big to-do and changed the 'national conversation' for a few days.
ReplyDeleteI remember once when the Mayor of Hamtramck, Michigan publicly pardoned Quirk, who had been arrested again for public disorder, disturbing the peace, loitering, littering, panhandling without a license and causing community tensions to rise.
Quirk claimed he was just holding a campaign event and raising campaign donations as it was his Constitutional right to do. The Police and the Judge both viewed it as conspiracy to create a riot, and theft by deception.
Quirk, who was running for President at the time, as a Quirkian, was run out of town by a mob midway through a campaign speech.
Luckily, Quirk had 'the Mayor's pecker in his pocket' as the saying goes, and was pardoned.
Later rumor had it that Quirk and the Mayor were splitting whatever campaign donations received, though this could never be proved, as Quirk only accepted campaign donations in cash and kept them, not in a bank, but in his own private safe.

ReplyDeleteCNN viciously attacks POTUS for Phoenix speech and suggests he's a national security threat
By Peter Barry Chowka
CNN hit a new low – and that's saying a lot – Tuesday night in its coverage of President Trump's speech in Phoenix. The former news channel is now little more than a propaganda mouthpiece for the Deep State. On Tuesday, it used a half-dozen anti-Trump panelists, with no one representing a counter view, to introduce a new fake news meme: not only is the 45th POTUS a racist and a Nazi-sympathizer, but he is an imminent national security threat to the United States.
To reinforce this spin, CNN's Don Lemon, who outed himself as a Trump-hater in an out-of-control alcohol-fueled on-camera appearance last New Year's Eve, trotted out CNN's new contributor, former Obama regime director of National Intelligence James Clapper.
Don Lemon live on CNN, New Year's Eve, 2016.
Clapper's incendiary comments about Trump's speech immediately went to the top of CNN's website and led many other mainstream news reports as well. Clapper's and the other CNN commentators' tirades eclipsed any coverage of what Trump actually said in his 80-minute speech to an enthusiastic crowd of over 19,000 at the Phoenix Convention Center.
CNN.com home page screenshot, August 22, 2017, 11 P.M. PDT.
Speaking of President Trump, Clapper said:
I really question his ability, his fitness to be in this office and I also am beginning to wonder about his motivation for it. Maybe he is looking for a way out.
In its article about Clapper's appearance, CNN reported:
Clapper said he found the President's rally "downright scary and disturbing." Clapper denounced Trump's "behavior and divisiveness and complete intellectual, moral and ethical void. How much longer does the country have to, to borrow a phrase, endure this nightmare?"
Clapper on CNN.
Clapper continued to pile on. With his patina of national security expertise (and notwithstanding his obvious lie to Congress in 2013 while testifying under oath), he was accorded high expert status by program host Lemon.
Clapper also said he is worried about the President’s access to the nuclear codes. “In a fit of pique he decides to do something about Kim Jong Un, there’s actually very little to stop him,” Clapper said. “The whole system is built to ensure rapid response if necessary. So there's very little in the way of controls over exercising a nuclear option, which is pretty damn scary.”
Lemon continued to refer to Clapper’s comments after his appearance ended. The one-sided echo chamber panel members tried to one up each of their in their disdain for the president. It was only 12 days ago that CNN fired its last conservative commentator and Trump defender, Jeffrey Lord, citing as an excuse his use of a politically incorrect tweet. On Tuesday, the “Republican” on the CNN panel, a NeverTrumper named Rick Wilson, did his part to bash Trump. Wilson, by the way, revealed way back in March 2016 to the delight of the left wing media that he planned to vote for Hillary Clinton.
DeleteRick Wilson.
Lemon, for his part, delivered several emotive rants suggesting that the sky was about to fall if Trump remains in office. Trump, Lemon said at 11:46 P.M. EDT.:
... is clearly trying to ignite a civil war in this country[.] ... If he was on my team in this newsroom and said those things [apparently referring to but not directly quoting what Trump said in Phoenix], he would be escorted out of the building.
Lemon then went on to quote and show a tweet by Ana Navarro, a Trump-hater and frequent CNN contributor:
Only possible defensible explanation for Trump's disgusting, unpresidential, narcissistic behavior, would be early onset dementia. Maybe.
Meanwhile, over at the Fox News Channel, anchor Bret Baier convened a much more fair and balanced panel after Trump's speech ended around 8:25 P.M. PDT. FNC correspondent John Roberts had the opening comment:
BAIER: All right, John. You hear these speeches. That was a stemwinder!
ROBERTS: That was as good as anything I ever heard [from Donald Trump] on the campaign trail.
At 7:46 P.M. PDT, Fox News had a caption on the screen as President Trump spoke, paraphrasing what he had just said. "Pres Trump on the Media: These Are Sick People." In light of how CNN and much of the rest of the mainstream media presented the news about the evening, truer words were never spoken.

ReplyDeleteCBS: Injuries To US Diplomats In Cuba Worse Than First Reported
ED MORRISSEYPosted at 6:41 pm on August 23, 2017
CNN reported two days ago that the initial reports also underestimated the number of people affected, as well as the number of countries. Canada now claims that their diplomatic staff have suffered similar injuries beginning about the same time:
In June, five Canadian diplomats and family members reported experiencing symptoms consistent with the attacks, the US government officials told CNN, which would mean further attacks were carried out at the same time Cuban officials were investigating the incidents.
“We are aware of unusual symptoms affecting Canadian and US diplomatic personnel and their families in Havana,” Canadian spokesperson Brianne Maxwell said in a statement earlier in August when it was first revealed that Canadian diplomats had also been attacked. “The government is actively working — including with US and Cuban authorities — to ascertain the cause.”

How serious is this ?
Quite Serious - brains are frying -
To borrow a phrase from a popular US fast-food chain, is this how Cuba sonics? No one’s quite sure yet, as it turns out, which explains why the US delayed reports about mysterious physical ailments suffered by US diplomatic personnel and their families in Havana. CBS now reports that the initial leaks of the attack may have seriously underestimated the damage done. Doctors reported seeing indications of traumatic brain injury and damage to the central nervous system from the suspected sonic attacks allegedly aimed at US interests:
According to medical records reviewed exclusively by CBS News, a U.S. doctor who evaluated American and Canadian diplomats working in Havana diagnosed them with conditions as serious as mild traumatic brain injury, and with likely damage to the central nervous system.
Nigatator, the Cuban commies are frying the brains of Canucks.

ReplyDeleteMcClatchy: Trump Aides Plot Big Immigration Deal — That Breaks a Campaign Promise

ReplyDeleteReport: White House Has Prepared The Paperwork For Trump To Pardon Joe Arpaio
ALLAHPUNDITPosted at 8:01 pm on August 23, 2017
Without doubt, he had every intention of doing it last night in Phoenix. Onstage, with Sheriff Joe beside him and an adoring crowd around him, he could have indulged his royal and theatrical instincts all at once. It would have been one of the most satisfying moments of his presidency, I’m sure. But at some point John Kelly must have pulled him aside and said, “No. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. NO.” Just too dodgy to pardon a guy who’s been attacked by the left as a racist for years so soon after the Charlottesville uproar. (An ACLU petition opposing a pardon for Arpaio is already over 100,000 signatures.) So Trump held off.

But it’s coming.
TRENDING:
The President is apparently an underground hit in Hollywood
The White House has prepared the paperwork for President Trump to pardon former sheriff Joe Arpaio when he makes the final decision to do so, CNN has learned.
An administration official said the White House has also prepared talking points to send to surrogates after he is pardoned.
One of the talking points is that Arpaio served his country for 50 years in the military, the Drug Enforcement Administration and as Arizona’s Maricopa County sheriff, and that it is not appropriate to send him to prison for “enforcing the law” and “working to keep people safe.”
Par for the course: This would be an unorthodox move by the president, defying standard procedure. The DOJ has an entire office devoted to handling pardon requests, as there’s an enormous volume of them to process. Typically the Department sticks to felony cases involving long sentences where the applicant has already done hard time, not ticky-tack fouls like Arpaio’s misdemeanor conviction for contempt, for which he hasn’t even been sentenced yet. They usually require a formal application too, which Arpaio hasn’t bothered with, and they have a set of standards they consider in weighing whether to recommend a pardon to the president. One standard is “Acceptance of responsibility, remorse, and atonement”: “A petitioner should be genuinely desirous of forgiveness rather than vindication.” Arpaio, however, has insisted that he was railroaded in being found guilty of contempt. He’s at the front of the line for a pardon not because his case is egregious or his sentence draconian but because he’s a friend and prominent supporter of the president. Since the pardon power is plenary, though, Trump can do whatever he likes here. If he wants to toss DOJ guidelines out the window and show a little clemency to a pal, that’s his prerogative.
But when? If you’re John Kelly, worried about the optics of an Arpaio pardon, what’s the opportune time to do it politically? I assume the White House wants this done before Arpaio’s sentencing on October 5th, not after. That would spare Arpaio the public embarrassment of having the sentence imposed, and I think Trump would enjoy the display of power involved in short-circuiting a judicial process while it’s still playing out rather than swooping in afterward with a “get out of jail free” card. (Pay attention, Bob Mueller!) If I’m right that it’ll happen before October 5th, there are three obvious opportunities.
Delete1. Labor Day weekend. Take advantage of a slow news period when people aren’t paying much attention. Trump’s base will still hear about it.
2. Save it for a moment when he’s under fire from his base for having sided with the “globalists” on something and needs to be bailed out. If he ends up blinking after threatening a shutdown last night over funding for the border wall, he’ll need a way to soothe populists. Pardoning Arpaio would be an easy pander.
3. Do it whenever but hide it in a crowd of pardons for other offenders. Obviously a pardon for Arpaio would be big news, but if he issued it along with a few dozen acts of clemency for especially sympathetic offenders in federal prisons, it would blunt the blowback and hand him some good press to go with the heat. Hey — he could even be cheeky and pardon Hillary. That would be bigger news than the Arpaio pardon, crowding it out of the media, and would let Trump play the “magnanimous” victor while telegraphing to the country that he thinks Clinton is a criminal. It’d be pretty funny. And there’s nothing the president enjoys more than a good troll.
Here he is last night in Phoenix hinting as strongly as he can that Arpaio’s going to end up with a pass.
