COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

    That was a national poll.

RCP has Trump ahead of Cruz in Nevada by a massive 21%, still ahead in S. Carolina by 17%, and ahead nationally by 11%.

If Bashing Bush is bad in S. Carolina it hasn't showed up yet at RCP.

    The psychodynamics of Hillary's arf-arf

    By Deborah C. Tyler

Time and again, Hillary Clinton says and does things that indicate she is out of touch with her environment and the people around her. In a recent demonstration of insensitivity, she loudly yapped like a dog at a campaign rally. Why is she impervious to the offensiveness of her words and destructiveness of her actions? The answer lies in adult developmental psychology.

Hillary Clinton lived her life in a manner that did not require her to mature psychologically, morally, intellectually, or functionally. Psychology explains that neither a nation nor an individual advances during a crisis. A nation at war does not call for a constitutional convention. An embattled individual in crisis learns only the skills relevant to overcoming the enemy and surviving the crisis.

Hillary Clinton has spent her adult life at war, rumbling over political terrain in a heavily armed battle tank, seeing life through the periscope. People don't mature from their successes; they learn from being honest with themselves about their failures and correcting the errors which caused the mistakes to happen. This is why Hillary has learned so little from life. The Clintons protect themselves, trust no one, always persevere, and prevail over enemies. There have been many political war machines, but the greatest of these is the Clintons. The Clintons never fail.

A psychotherapeutic formula subtracts the years spent intoxicated or in crisis from chronological age to figure psychological maturity. By that reckoning, Hillary would be about 20, a dork in thick glasses who thinks it clever to twang about not standin' by her man and to make animal noises.

Some people feel alive only when they are fighting, and some families lurch from crisis to crisis, only feeling connected when it's time to raise bail. The Clintons are the world's preeminent political juggernaut, waging a permanent campaign that protects them from honestly facing themselves or each other.

Hillary shrieked, “What difference at this point does it make?” from the deep emptiness of considering direct subordinates as hindrances on the field of battle to be clambered over. Most responsible people painfully remember when they had to fire subordinates. If employees were actually murdered in the workplace, it would be a devastating trauma to any leader. But not to Hillary. The “What's the big deal about Benghazi?” outburst may have been a political strategy, but it was also a robotic reaction from a chief who wasn't especially sleep-deprived or grief-stricken, but who long ago accepted the costs of doing business.

Hillary's humanity seems to emerge when she is face to face with a woman of her own cohort. Then she pauses for a moment, allows herself one brief breath before returning to the battle. In those encounters she appears to be looking into a mirror. Reflected in the glowing eyes of a nameless sister, Hillary momentarily glimpses the woman she might have been.

  2. BIG LABOR HOLDING THEIR FIRE

In a win for Bernie Sanders, the AFL-CIO is delaying making it’s endorsement in the surprisingly close Democratic presidential primary.

The news of the decision came in an email from Richard Trumka, the president of the AFL-CIO, to the union's executive council. It was first reported by The Huffington Post Wednesday. A vote had been expected next week at the union's annual winter meeting in San Diego.

"Following recent discussion at the AFL-CIO’s Executive Committee meeting and subsequent conversations with many of you, I have concluded that there is broad consensus for the AFL-CIO to remain neutral in the presidential primaries for the time being and refrain from endorsing any candidate at this moment," Trumka said in the email.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has broad union backing, with endorsements from most unions. The AFL-CIO holding out was considered a win for Sanders.

  3. I SUSPECTED THE WALLSTREET NBC POLL WAS BOGUS

Poll: Donald Trump trounces rivals ahead of S.C. primary

Just days ahead of South Carolina's Republican primary, Donald Trump maintains a wide lead over his closest rivals, according to a new Bloomberg Politics poll released Wednesday.

Among likely Republican primary voters in South Carolina, the real estate businessman, at 36 percent, has a 19-point advantage over Ted Cruz, who comes in second at 17 percent. Floridians Marco Rubio and Jeb Bush are competing for the third place slot, at 15 percent and 13 percent respectively. Nine percent of voters are supporting former neurosurgeon Ben Carson, while seven percent are with Ohio Gov. John Kasich. Three percent of voters still remain undecided.

Trump has a commanding lead across nearly all demographic groups, including those who identify as evangelical Christians. And despite his aggressive performance during Saturday's CBS News debate in Greenville, his domination of the field remained unaffected.

    3. Comcast is sometimes described as a family business. Brian L. Roberts, Chairman, President, and CEO of Comcast, is son of co-founder Ralph Roberts. Roberts owns or controls just over 1% of all Comcast shares but all of the Class B supervoting shares, which gives him an "undilutable 33% voting power over the company". Legal expert Susan P. Crawford has said this gives him “effective control over its [Comcast's] every step" In 2010, he was one of the highest-paid executives in the United States, with total compensation of about $31 million.

    6. AND MORE:

A huge merger may turn the son of a Philadelphia Jewish entrepreneur into one of the most powerful Americans in the media industry.

Brian Roberts, 54, chairman and CEO of Comcast, a cable and broadband provider that announced on February 13 its intention to take over Time Warner Cable in a $45 billion deal, seeks to control the cable services of more than 32 million American homes, which would make him the unchallenged leader in the field.

The merger — which still needs congressional and regulatory approval — marks the latest step in the Roberts family’s long road from a modest start by his father and two Jewish partners in Tupelo, Miss. 50 years ago, to becoming America’s largest provider of home media content.

Roberts, a Maccabiah Games squash gold medalist known for his affinity for Israel, has not made his mark on Jewish life. But his Jewish identity, friends say, should not be doubted.

“Brian’s commitment to religion and Jewish causes is like every other thing he does: It is extremely personal and low-profile,” Ed Rendell, the former Pennsylvania governor, told the Forward. Roberts, he added, “does not carry these things on his chest.”

But it is part of his company’s DNA. Comcast was established in 1969 by Roberts’s father Ralph and his two Jewish partners, Daniel Aaron and Julian Brodsky. During a poker game, Ralph Roberts had heard about a small cable company in Tupelo looking for investors and the three partners decided to step in.

  5. There's no way around it. Donald Trump is going to go two-for-two in the early primaries, according to the South Carolina polls.

    The Headline Numbers

Since Trump won the New Hampshire primary, seven pollsters have surveyed South Carolina Republicans (Gravis, ARG, PPP, the state's Republican state legislative caucus, CBS, CNN and the Augusta Chronicle). All seven have showed Trump leading, by 14-22 points.

This lead is way outside any margin of error and well beyond the reach of any ground-game advantage. Trump will win South Carolina unless he somehow collapses in the final days. Given his campaign thus far, it's hard to imagine what could cause him to collapse.

  8. Washington (CNN)Retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor says President Barack Obama should name Antonin Scalia's replacement.

O'Connor, a nominee of President Ronald Reagan who became the court's swing vote until she retired from the bench in 2006, broke with Republicans who say they plan to block Obama's nominee, and want his successor to name the next justice.

"I don't agree (with Republicans)," O'Connor said in an interview with Phoenix-based Fox affiliate KSAZ. "We need somebody in there to do the job and just get on with it."

She noted that it's unusual to for a Supreme Court opening to exist in an election year, saying that the proximity to the presidential race "creates too much talk around the thing that isn't necessary."

She said Obama should name a replacement for Scalia, an influential conservative member of the nation's high court who was found dead Saturday at age 79.

"Well you just have to pick the best person you can under these circumstances, as the appointing authority must do. And it's an important position and one we care about as a nation, as a people," O'Connor said. "And I wish the president well as he makes choices and goes down that line -- it's hard."

A senior official at the Russian Defense Ministry said Wednesday night that "The beginning of deliveries of the first consignment of Favorit missile systems cannot take place since the Iranian side has not paid the price enshrined in the contract." There is no doubt that it was a very unfriendly statement intended to hurt the Iranians at a time when the Iranian defense minister, Gen. Hossein Dehghan, is visiting Moscow.

    (the wall around the Vatican)

(the Vatican has the most restrictive immigration policies in the world)

You lack perspective, O'Bumble. Relative size counts.

The total area of Vatican City is .44 sq mi. The area of the US is 3,805,927 sq miles or 8,649,834 times larger than Vatican City.

    From my post above,

I am not positive but I suspect that huuuuuge wall around the Vatican is in large part made up of the back of buildings.

What I am sure of is that the Vatican is about 1/2 mile on each side. In other words, it has a perimeter of about 2 miles or about 1/1000 of the length of the wall Trump wants to build and have Mexico pay for.

As for immigration policy, the Pope as asked each Catholic parish worldwide to try to take in a
refugee family. However, since I'm sure that won't satisfy you, I will merely add that the Vatican has pledged to take in two refugee families. One has already been identified, a family of four. If the second family is as large or larger that would equate to about 8 refugees.

Now consider that the population of Vatican City is about 800. That means the population would increase by about 1%. On a relative basis, the US would have to take in about 3,200,000 refugees or immigrants to match Vatican City.

    Take that you heathen.

    3. In 2005, Bear Stearns' investigators[12] developed a different methodology to determine the number of illegal immigrants in the United States.

They made the assumption that the amount of remittances (money sent back to Mexico) is directly proportional to the number of Mexican immigrants in the United States.

Other data used for their estimates are the increases of households and school enrollment in Mexican immigrant communities.

They conclude that the number of illegal immigrants in the United States may well be twice the official number put out by the U.S. Census of 9 million and may be 20 million people or higher.

Information from The Mexican Central Bank details the remittances and shows their growth.

      2. And more importantly, Mr. Trump has indicated he will deport them all if elected.

How the DNC Helps Clinton Buy Off Superdelegates

As floodgates open to donations from special interests, the future of the party is auctioned to the highest bidder

"A joint fundraising committee between the Clinton campaign and the DNC—called the Hillary Victory Fund—raised $26.9 million as of December 31, 2015, much of which has gone directly to the DNC and other Democratic candidates across the country. Thirty-three state Democratic parties signed pacts with Ms. Clinton’s campaign, meaning she is essentially buying support from Democratic leaders around the country. In short, the Clinton campaign controls the money and decides which states receive it after the campaign and the DNC get their cut. According to Bloomberg, New Hampshire received $124,000, where six out of six superdelegates supported Ms. Clinton while over 60 percent of the primary vote favored Mr. Sanders. Nevada and South Carolina also have pacts with the Hillary Victory Fund, where Ms. Clinton has already won support from three of Nevada’s eight superdelegates and three out of South Carolina’s six superdelegates."

Goodness gracious, this sounds a little less than ethical, and doesn't seem to compute with the Rufian view of things. And here I thought it was illegal to buy votes in our country.

Bull. Which has the DNC or the Democratic Party been doing more of, contributing to the Sanders campaign or trying to sabotage it?

I don't know where Sanders actually stands. He may have already peaked. However, if he continues to do well and the DNC and the party sticks it to him through dirty tricks and procedural shenanigans, it would only be poetic justice if he decided (as Trump has threatened)
      to run as an independent.

I suspect that would wipe the smug ass smirk off Debbie Wasserman Schultz' face rather quickly.

  27. The US most certainly does "... overtly solicit illegal immigrants to come here."

The open border is an overt invitation.
The lack of sanctions upon employers of undocumented workers is an overt invitation.
The failure by design of the E-Verify system is an overt invitation.

Not likely, the expense of rounding them up would be huge, greater than the cost of the wall. The howling from the employers could well keep Mr Trump from falling asleep, even while ensconced in the White House

      Really?

      (sarcasm button off)

Of course, it's not likely. I might not be voting for Trump but I don't think even he is stupid enough to think he could deport them all. However, there are plenty of people who are stupid enough to believe it or some modified version of it and those are the ones Trump is appealing to. You might say he is soliciting their votes. Unfortunately, as we both realize, he will be unable to accommodate their wishes even if elected.

How good is your Spanish and when was the last time you were in Mexico?

Do you know the average Mexican has a vocabulary about half the size of an English speaker, and the distinction will be lost on them.

They were solicited, overtly invited, whether you think so or not.

Lexical facts for native English speakers
      May 29th 2013, 16:02 by R.L.G. | NEW YORK

SEVERAL years ago we mentioned TestYourVocab.com here on the blog. Not long ago, the site reached its two millionth test result, and so the researchers have put together some data:

Most adult native test-takers range from 20,000–35,000 words
Average native test-takers of age 8 already know 10,000 words
Average native test-takers of age 4 already know 5,000 words

      while ...
Gerald Erichsen estimates that Spanish has about half as many words as English, so it might be a reasonable presumption to extend that to what the average native speaker knows, i.e., somewhere around 15,000 words for a native-Spanish speaker.

In my experience the low wage, poorly educated Mexican undocumented border crosser has even less of a vocabulary ...

The distinction you make would be lost in translation.

  30. More than half of households headed by immigrants in the county illegally, or 62 percent, received welfare benefits in 2012, according to a report released by the Center for Immigration Studies.

In the same time period, 49 percent of households headed by legal immigrants received welfare benefits, while 30 percent of households headed by natives received the same.

“Households headed by immigrants illegally in the country have higher use rates than native households overall and for food programs (57 percent vs. 22 percent) and Medicaid (51 percent vs. 23 percent),” states the report. “Use of cash programs by illegal immigrants is lower than use by natives (5 percent vs. 10 percent), as is use of housing programs (4 percent vs. 6 percent).”

The report also finds that some restrictions on government benefits are not enforced, and there are many exemptions or ways for these individuals to skirt them.
