COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

    2. BTW, hasn't Anyone noticed that it's impossible to get Obamacare if you don't have income?

The only people that can "quit" work are the ones with sufficient savings to do so. Basically, you're talking about some older, wealthier people that would have already retired but for the necessity of remaining on Group Health Insurance.

    3. There Is one big, explosive problem with O'care that Wio, and Quirk before him, identified.

There are a lot of people making 60 thousandish that are going to make enough this year to jump out of the subsidized category, and get a huge tax bill at the end of 2014. Along about January of next year this could be like a thousand atomic bombs going off.

And, quite simply, without the help of the Republicans (good luck with that,) I don't see how it can be fixed.

      Delete
    4. It's creating 2 classes of folks...

Those that will work up to a point and give up jumping to make it over the canyon.

That 20k leap it difficult for most labor paid employees to breach.

It will foster a "why work harder" mentality and I for one understand that most people who earn a wage cannot expect a 40 k raise on a 35k salary (60ish earnings for a couple, 25k for one and 35k for the other)

Break it down. the primary bread winner makes 35-40k. If they hit the earnings ceiling? health care kicks in for a bill of 20k. In order to make it "pay" that 35k worker must get a 40K RAISE (20 k to cover the health care, 10k to cover the INCREASED tax bill and maybe 10K (900 bucks a month) increase the standard of living)

I make the point that almost no 35k employee can get a 40 k raise to bring them to reasonable increase to work that much harder to earn a few bucks.

I bet the solution will be an explosion of under the table & barter, off the books work.

      Black market baby...

    5. One other consequence of Obamacare is that the MAJORITY of American workers will be forced into a single group.

If you wish, and can afford it? Private insurance will be around, I expect my health care to go from 1557 a month to 2500 a month within the next 24 months.

Within 3-4 years I will pay 36k a year for my families plan, but I will not be standing in the line with 90% of other Americans. If I need a hip replacement? I'll take a medical vacation to Israel, India or Honduras and actually pay for the same treatment and care for 10 cents on the dollar..

Welcome to the new world order...

    6. Now, to correctly understand the parameters of the problem, be aware that there can be a huge difference, depending on where you live. For example, in Wisconsin (Northeast Wisconsin - for ex. St Croix Falls - has just about the highest Healthcare Costs in the Nation. The Weekly Standard guy didn't pick that area by accident,)

there is a $6,920.00 Difference between, say, Racine, Wi. and St. Croix Falls, Wi.

However, even in Racine the poor sucker that, without understanding, goes over the line is going to be brutalized to the tune of $6,656.00.

In St. Croix Falls it is $13,576.00.

      Ouch!!

  4. An unappreciated, in my view, factoid about Obamacare is that 50% of those that qualify for Subsidies don't know that they qualify for subsidies, and the further down you go on the income scale, and, of course, the further Up you go on the subsidy scale, the lower the percentage of those who know.

Being "news junkies" we just kind of assume that the hoi polloi know all that we know. We're kind of assholes, really. :)

To me the main problem, the big problem, with ObamaCare is the loss of freedom and personal choice that comes with it.

Down the list but important is/will be the decline in overall care.

And, of course, the death panels.

That Obama has lied about every aspect of this is.......well, to be expected. He's lied about nearly everything. It's what he does.

The ongoing comments of an event that occurred in our own lifetime, the Israeli murderous assault on the US Liberty, is an apt example of how events are distorted for political purposes. If we cannot trust the accounts of a well documented contemporary event, how can we believe the nonsense about religious events?

The nonsense about writing “god” as “g-d” is particularly galling to me. It only emphasizes the blatant metaphor of god as slave master and the obedient slave and the faithful servant.

The second sentence of the statement is a great description of Islam. My understanding of Judaism though includes its emphasis on choice:

CHOOSE life.....CHOOSE the right.....etc....and if one chooses wrongly one can return and choose again.....

The G-d business I don't understand as a mystification, but as a recognition of the impossibility of adequately describing the ineffable. That's just my understanding, the Jews may well have some other reasoning, or perhaps are arguing about it among themselves......:)

The thread is concerning healthcare, we look to the font of civilization for guidance.
They have a socialized system, where even religious conviction is not enough to stop supporting the government's dictates as to what constitutes 'Health Care'.

Many in the US feel the government should not finance abortions, because it is religiously volatile.
But the client state of the US has no such adversity to including abortion in its list of options available to the patient.

Please, quote on of the insults, one thing written that was unsavory or out of the line of the previous post.

  15. How is the US to deal with the problem of un-employability? Millions of Americans will not find work because 1) there is no employment to match their skill sets or 2) they lack skill sets because of illiteracy (within illiteracy I am taking liberty to include those of marginal education).

When the enclosure laws and industrialization put Britain in such a situation, transport to Georgia and Australia, for example, relieved the stress. The US has neither the inclination nor territory for transportation (although prisons seem to have come to serve the purpose to some degree).

The US is in a bind with no ready solution at hand. Until the systemic problem of chronic unemployment can be solved, a series of fixes like Obamacare can be anticipated.

    10. Obama Democrats’ troubling view on work

Among its many stamps, the Postal Service has a series called “Made in America, Building a Nation.” The strip of “forever” stamps is a collection of iconic photographs of 20th-century industry featuring men and women toiling on railroads, skyscrapers and factory floors.

A celebration of work and workers, the series quotes Helen Keller saying, “The world is moved along, not only by the mighty shoves of its heroes, but also by the aggregate of the tiny pushes of each honest worker.”

My, oh, my, how times have changed. America now has a government that views work as a trap and celebrates those who escape it.

That is the upshot of last week’s remarkable exchange over ObamaCare. It began when the head of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office reported that the interplay of taxes and subsidies in the law “creates a disincentive for people to work.” The report predicted the mix would lead to fewer hours worked, costing the equivalent of nearly 2.5 million jobs.

In response, President Obama’s spokesman pleaded guilty — with pride and pleasure.
“Opportunity created by affordable, quality health insurance allows families in America to make a decision about how they will work, or if they will work,” Jay Carney said.

Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi applauded the law for freeing people from “job-lock.

    12. Pay more, get less will be the experience for tens of millions by the time the law is fully implemented. And don’t forget its assault on religious freedom.

All true and yet, as Carney’s defense showed, something much, much larger is at play. The impacts are symptoms. The disease is that leading Democrats view fewer workers and more dependency as a good thing. That attitude largely explains slow economic growth, record-low labor rates and the explosion of handouts over the last five years.
This anti-job, pro-dependency tilt is the crux of the nation’s polarization. In essence, it pits those who believe in the sanctity of work against those who believe in penalizing wealth and redistributing its fruits.

Not all Democrats agree with that approach, but the party is now controlled by those who do. It is the party that celebrates subsidies and rewards states for getting more people on food stamps.

It opens the door wider for disability payments and fights for unemployment benefits like it once fought for jobs. It does these things not because of an emergency but because of a warped ideology.

    13. The stigma attached to getting something for nothing is being replaced by an endless demand for more free stuff. One party is stoking that demand as it moves from being the working-class party to the entitlement party.

That revelation counts as the silver lining of ObamaCare. We now have it straight from the White House and Congress that creating jobs is not really their goal.

Instead, the president’s singular piece of legislation is a success because it helps people get healthcare while avoiding work.

That is the Obama legacy. It should be celebrated with postage stamps featuring couch potatoes dozing in front of televisions.

That Deuce did not see, or did not appreciate the abortion reference as relating to the Health Care issue, I take responsibility for, as it was not well set up.

You underestimate Deuce's perception and keen nose for baloney. He knew what you were about and shot you down. Keep playing cat and mouse and Deuce may knock you into next Thursday.

    1. On New Years Eve, supreme court Justice Sonia Sotomayor issued an injunction blocking the Obama administration from implementing the aspect of the ACA known as the "contraception mandate", which requires employee insurance plans to cover a range of preventative women's health needs.

Now Obama Care, the ACA, has a 'Contraception Mandate', much like Israel has an 'Abortion Mandate' in their health care system.

People with a 'conservative' or 'Orthodox' perspective see it as unconscionable hat the government funds what they consider murder. It is an understandable, if flawed position, in a secular, multicultural and religiously diverse nation.
In a nation state that claims to be of a particular religion, it is less understandable, the requirement to fund what is morally and RELIGIOUSLY objectionable.

So much for being a 'Jewish' state, if it flaunts the standards and mores of Judaism.

Beyond that, the discussion was about 'socialism', which, at its core, embodies a disrespect for private property.
The socialist state of Israel does eschew private property. Instead the supposed 'Jewish' state embraces the Islamic standard, set by the Ottoman.

The Israeli government has, to a large extent, continued the Ottoman legal system in regard to land ownership.

Thus, today the vast proportion of land within the State of Israel (roughly 93%) is owned and managed either by the Israel Lands Administration (ILA) or the JNF.  This figure includes much of such extensive regions as the Negev and the Judean Wilderness (near the Dead Sea), which are sparsely populated.

Jewish settlements in the State of Israel usually are located on lands that are owned by the ILA or the JNF and that have been consigned to each settlement through long-term leases.

Less than 7% of the land in the State of Israel is privately owned.

There is little that would justify the 'O' bemoaning 'socialism' embodied in the ACA, while embracing a more intrusive form of socialism, in Israel.

As I said, I did not set it up, well.
Would have let it go, but you don't want to.

So there it is, the socialist and secular state of Israel sets the standard, for 'O', until policies that mirror the Israeli's touches on his personal life, then he objects to the intrusion on his liberty and freedoms.

That was where it was going, that is where it's at, now.

    2. Beyond that, it seems very clear tha the religious leaders of a country have a lot to say about the social welfare system of that or any country.

And that when the leaders of all the Abrahamic religions coalesce and agree on any subject, let alone one that impacts 'Health Care' then those opinions do matter, especially in a discussion of 'Health Care', when the subject is a matter life and death, at the hands of a doctor..

    5. Pretty sweet, aye, anon.

The other thing that makes the Israeli health care system part of the discussion, Mitt Romney's endorsement of it.
The man that developed the principles of the ACA, in Massachusetts, heaped praise upon the Israeli system. Obviously the GOP, whom Mitt was representing when he made the statements would support such a system in the US.

Not only would contraception be mandated, so would abortions, if we were to mimic the israeli system, here in the US.

The GOP's Standard Bearer's position, very much a viable subject in a discussion of the ACA and the state of 'socialism' in medicine that it implies.

When New Zealand snowboarder Rebecca Torr fired up Tinder on her phone she found that few of her fellow athletes had caught on to the 21st century dating tool. Tinder is a location-based dating app that lets users browse for prospective partners nearby. Users choose yes or no, and if there's a mutual match the app lets them know.

It may lead to the "union for life of one man and one woman in the holy estate of matrimony" Murphy v. Ramsey, 114 U.S. 15 at 45 (1885). Then again, it may not. It is certainly worth trying.

US Vice President Joe Biden will travel to some Asian countries next week to convey the message that Washington remains “determined to be a Pacific power,” a report says.

Biden “will seek to show that while the administration has been preoccupied with Mideast flare-ups and a series of domestic distractions, the US remained determined to be a Pacific power,” according to an analysis by The Associated Press on Sunday.

One of the pillars of President Barack Obama’s first term foreign policy agenda was expanding American military presence in the Asia-Pacific, saying the United States was "all in" when it came to that region.

In line with that policy which has come to be known as the “pivot”, the US military plans to station 60 percent of all the Navy's warships in the Pacific by 2020, compared with 50 percent now.

    3. Two "improvised launch devices" were fired near a US military base in Japan late on Thursday, US and Japanese officials said.

"There were no injuries and thus far we have found no damage or impact points here on base," a US military spokesman in Japan said in a statement on Friday.

"The incident occurred at 11:30 p.m. on Thursday. Flying objects were launched near the US military's Yokota airbase," a spokesman for Tokyo Metropolitan Police said.

Residents near the base in western Tokyo called police last night to report hearing explosions, national broadcaster NHK said, adding that police found several metal pipes pointing at the base in a field some 300 meters away.

Japan is host to almost 50,000 US service personnel and their families. The two countries have a mutual defense agreement that, in practice, means Tokyo is given shelter under Washington's significant security umbrella.

But many people in Okinawa, where the bulk of US troops are based, resent their presence and an increasingly vocal campaign wants them to leave.

The United States and Japan are currently taking part in a huge naval exercise involving dozens of warships, submarines and aircraft off the island of Okinawa, amid heightened tensions with China.

The AnnualEx 2013 war games, which kicked off on November 25, are designed to increase the defensive readiness and interoperability of US naval forces and their Japanese counterparts, according to the US Navy.

Thursday's incident also comes as tensions run high in the region between China and Japan with the focus on a group of disputed islands in the East China Sea.

  26. It is absurd to think that there is any benefit or need for a US Chinese military confrontation in Asia. China is vulnerable over trade and any economic confrontation must be led by the powers in the region and that must include Japan, Viet Nam, Korea, India and Australia. Japan could become a nuclear power. Taiwan is effectively shunted by events from doing anything without the US and certainly Obama is not going to do anything.
