COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

As much as he wants to rejoin the jihad, he doesn’t dare go back until he repays the $2,000 he owes his neighbors. He’s not afraid to die, he says. What scares him is the idea that he might die with an outstanding loan. “Anytime I’m out there, I could be martyred,” he says. “And God does not forgive anyone—even a martyr—who dies without paying his just debts.”

Talk about bringing home the bacon.

Christie bodyguard arrested for shoplifting gun accessories while he begged police to drop the charge 'out of professional courtesy...all as he wore a stolen hat'

Trooper William Carvounis, 35, is accused of stealing nearly $300 in merchandise from a Tilden Township, Pennsylvania Cabela's store Jan. 8

Police say surveillance footage reveals Carvounis slipped items into his pockets and even tore a price tag from his hat as he tried leaving the store

According to Tilden Police Chief William J. McEllroy, the New Jersey state trooper also tried to use his position to get out of the arrest

    ----------------------

This is the part I like

'Carvounis said he was on the governor’s security detail,' McEllroy said. 'He said he makes $140,000 a year, and he’s afraid of losing his job.'

    $140,000 a year?

    "Ash,

Overnight I had some thoughts about Zionism I wish to share with you.

Because Jews were persecuted with particular ferocity by Czarist Russia gave no excuse for stealing the land of others. If you would read a bit of the literature produced by Jews both pro and con on the question of Zionism, you will discover that both sides agreed with my first sentence. Jews wished to purchase land from its owners within the Ottoman Empire and through the generosity of the Rothschilds and the success of fund raising activity among ordinary Jews, worldwide, the Zionists did exactly that. Therefore, prior to the 1948 War, Jewish settlements were owned in fee simple via standard land contracts. When these settlements grew and prospered, Muslims and Christians sought and were given gainful employment.

Not all Zionists felt strong attachment to the Levant. Indeed, some would have been content with providing Jews a safe harbor anywhere other than viciously, murderous Eastern Europe. With this in mind, the "Father of Zionism", Herzl, agreed to make the case to his fellow Zionists to consider the British offer of an enormous land grant in Uganda. During the same time frame, so desperate were the Zionists to get Jews out of Russian that a group of 9,300 settled in the Galveston, Texas area. As should be clear, Zionism was an idea that took many forms and contrary to popular myth was not monolithically motivated to settle only in the Levant, which explains why Australia and Canada, for example, were also considered. Only after years of infighting and sometimes bitter division was the Levant finally chosen as the preferred region for Jewish settlement.

The early Zionists were overly represented by Utopian communists and socialists, who in their heart of hearts sincerely wished to live quietly and at peace with both the Muslims and Christians of the Holy Land. They wrote of an inclusive, multi-ethnic, religiously neutral society. While you may be unaware, much of the Zionist leadership was made up of atheists or non-conformist Jews, for whom the zealous practice of Judaism was, at best, an anachronistic impediment. As for the Rabbinate and their Orthodox congregations in Eastern Europe, Zionism was an insult to G-d, to be denied and resisted at every opportunity. Even today within Israel, many Orthodox Jews reject the Jewish State. The reason they are found in Israel is because there was nowhere else to go following the Shoah."

That all sound reasonable and conforms with my memory. I had been under the impression that Zionism was primarily a desire to return to Eretz Israel. Reading, for example, Ariel Sharon's biography I still had that impression. It seems that the modern Zionism doesn't necessarily mean that.

You description of the early Zionists and their differences ring true. Arhanson (spelling) in the early 1900's developed a spy ring to help out the British pre and during WW1 and he seemed pretty hard core Zionist though at the time they were simply immigrants. Weizmann seemed to be more moderate and worked Zionism from Europe (I think). They got the Balfour declaration.

Sharon used to like to take foreign visitors (i.e. George W. Bush) up in a helicopter and show him how you could see how narrow, an vulnerable, Israel is at its narrowest. You look at a map and the lines look pretty darn natural from the Med to the Jordan river. The trouble is there are a lot of inhabitants in that area already and many aren't Jewish.

"You are kidding yourself if you think the same thing will not happen again," Scalia told the University of Hawaii law school while discussing Korematsu v. United States, the ruling in which the court gave its imprimatur to the internment camps.

The local Associated Press report quotes Scalia as using a Latin phrase that means "in times of war, the laws fall silent," to explain why the court erred in that decision and will do so again.

"That's what was going on — the panic about the war and the invasion of the Pacific and whatnot," Scalia said. "That's what happens. It was wrong, but I would not be surprised to see it happen again, in time of war. It's no justification but it is the reality."

When the late Sen. Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii, had the chance to get out of the Japanese-American internment camps and fight in World War II, he jumped at it, eventually earning a Medal of Honor for "conspicuous gallantry" near San Terenzo, Italy, in 1942. You should read his Medal of Honor citation here.

    2. Scenes from a militarized America: Iowa family ‘terrorized’

By Radley Balko, Updated: February 4 at 10:37 am

Watch this video, taken from a police raid in Des Moines, Iowa. Send it to some people. When critics (like me) warn about the dangers of police militarization, this is what we’re talking about. You’ll see the raid team, dressed in battle-dress uniforms, helmets and face-covering balaclava hoods take down the family’s door with a battering ram. You’ll see them storm the home with ballistics shields, guns at the ready. More troubling still, you’ll see not one but two officers attempt to prevent the family from having an independent record of the raid, one by destroying a surveillance camera, another by blocking another camera’s lens.

From the images in the video, you’d think they were looking for an escaped murderer or a house full of hit men. No, none of that. They were looking for a few people suspected of credit card fraud. None of the people they were looking for were inside of the house, nor was any of the stolen property they were looking for. They did arrest two houseguests of the family on what the news report says were unrelated charges, one for a probation violation and one for possession of illegal drugs.

A couple other points about this story. First, note that the police say they knocked and announced themselves before the raid. The knock and announce requirement has a long history in U.S. and English common law. Its purpose was to give the occupants of a home the opportunity to avoid property damage and unnecessary violence by giving them time to come to the door and let the police in peacefully. As you can see from the video, the knock and announce today is largely a formality. The original purpose is gone. From the perspective of the people inside, there’s really no difference between this sort of “knock and announce” and a no-knock raid. (The covering of the officers’ faces is also troubling, though also not uncommon.)

      Delete
    3. Historically, the other purpose of the knock-and-announce requirement is to avoid the inevitable tragedy that can result if homeowners mistake raiding police for criminal intruders. As the requirement has been eroded, allegedly to protect the safety of police officers, we’ve seen plenty of tragedy — and many of those tragedies have been the deaths of police officers. There was another one just last December. And it almost happened here:

Prince’s son, Justin Ross, was in the bathroom when police burst in, and he was carrying a gun that he has the legal right to carry. “I stood up, I drew my weapon, I started to get myself together to get out the door, I heard someone in the main room say police. I re-holstered my weapon sat back down and put my hands in my lap,” Ross recalls.

Ross says he didn’t hear the police announcement until after one officer had already attempted to kick in the door. Had that officer been successful, there’s a good chance that Ross, the police officer, or both would be dead. The police department would then have inevitably argued that Ross should have known that they were law enforcement. But you can’t simultaneously argue that these violent, volatile tactics are necessary to take suspects by surprise and that the same suspects you’re taking by surprise should have known all along that they were being raided by police. Well you can, and police do, and judges and prosecutors usually support them. But the arguments don’t logically coexist.

Finally, note that police department officials say they “do not have a written policy governing how search warrants are executed.” That’s inexcusable. Most police departments do. But whether or not they’re governed by a formal policy, the use of these kinds of tactics for nonviolent crimes like credit card fraud is hardly unusual, and it’s happening more often, not less. I’ve reported on jurisdictions where all felony search warrants are now served with a SWAT team. At least one federal appeals court has now ruled that under the Fourth Amendment, there’s nothing unreasonable about using a SWAT team to perform regulatory inspections. To be fair, two others have ruled that such tactics are not reasonable. But it’s concerning that this would even be up for debate. We have plenty of discussion and analysis about when searches are appropriate. We also need to start talking about how.

    1. Teresita RedingerTue Feb 04, 03:11:00 PM EST: Allen, I don't post threads about Jews or Israel, my personal preference is not to talk about those subjects at all, and when I post my little remarks about King David or Ruth or whatnot, it's my way of protesting the direction of a thread.

Allen: This excuse is pathetic and nearly as nauseating as your saying to WiO, “I promised Allen I wouldn’t use that word anymore.” (whether kike or yid I do not recall)...

When David invaded the land of the Geshurites, the Gezrites, and the Amalekites, he left no man or woman alive. He conquered Rabbah and Ammon, and put the people of those cities under saws and harrows and axes of iron and made their dead bodies pass through a brick kiln. David committed adultery with Bathsheba, the wife of a loyal officer named Uriah, and tried to cover it up. When he was danger of being exposed, David ordered Uriah killed on the battlefield by other officers in order to obtain his wife Bathsheba as his own wife. And it was written in the chronicles of the kings of the House of Israel that King David did right in the eyes of Yahweh, that David was a man after Yahweh's own heart, that he was an angel with a heart perfect with Yahweh, and that evil had not been found in David all his days.

But we are told in your Scriptures that Jesus, a Jew through and through, was entirely without sin.

He is obviously kind of needy as evidenced by the obvious projection in his comment to T.

People like you often suffer massive inferiority complexes of the sort that make them attribute "genius" to themselves and ridicule to others, for example. In your case, I suspect it is your own sense of racial inferiority that causes you to needlessly strike out viciously. Analysis might help, but I doubt it at this late date in your life.

Racist, pompous, grandiloquent. Obviously, merely projection but still rather pathetic.

CHICAGO (CBS) — We all know how the old saying goes when you travel: “Don’t drink the water.”

Well in Sochi, Russia, you had better not TOUCH the water, either.

When Chicago Tribune reporter Stacy St. Clair, who is covering the Winter Olympics for the newspaper, arrived at her hotel, she was informed that there was a problem with the water and it had been shut off.

Then hotel staff delivered an ominous warning: “Do not use on your face because it contains something very dangerous.”

Her tweet about the situation has gone viral.

Water was eventually restored, but it came out of the tap in a less than appealing color. (See above.)

“On the bright side, I now know what very dangerous face water looks like,” St. Clair tweeted.

“Also on the bright side: I just washed my face with Evian, like I’m a Kardashian or something.”

Nigeria: Jihad group murders Muslim cleric who opposed them

Robert Spencer Feb 4, 2014 at 9:55pm Nigeria 6 Comments

SHEIKH MUHAMMAN AUWAL ALBANI ZARIA PHOTO

Why we don’t see more sincere Muslim reformers, part 37,509: “Nigerian Muslim cleric opposed to Boko Haram shot dead,” from Reuters, February 3 (thanks to Jayke):

(Reuters) – A Nigerian Muslim cleric who openly criticized Islamist sect Boko Haram has been killed in Zaria, hundreds of miles from where the military is fighting insurgents, police said on Monday.

Gunmen opened fire on Sheik Adam Albani’s car on Saturday evening as he drove home from preaching in a mosque, also killing his wife and young son, police spokesman Aminu Lawan said.

Western governments see prominent leaders like Sheik Albani playing a role in the long-term fight against Boko Haram and other al Qaeda-linked groups, in a deeply religious country of 170 million people.

The assassination of Sheik Albani in Zaria, the capital of Kaduna state in a central northern region, could discourage others from speaking out against Boko Haram, whose primary recruiting pool is the millions of uneducated youths in the north of Nigeria.

President Goodluck Jonathan is struggling to end a four-and-a-half year insurgency by Boko Haram but a military push begun in May last year has largely confined bloodshed to the country’s remote northeast corner, where the group originates and has most support.

The sect has killed thousands in its attempt to carve out an Islamic state in a country split roughly equally between Christians and Muslims. It has attacked anyone who appears to oppose its insurgency, from security targets to schools, churches and mosques where its ideas are rejected.

Boko Haram, which has been designated a terrorist organization by the United States, is considered the biggest security threat in Africa’s top oil exporter and second-largest economy.

More than a hundred people were killed last week in two attacks in northeast states under a state of emergency, including a siege at a packed church service.
