COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Rousing Speeches to Large Excited German Crowds is Nothing New

According to a recent poll, Obama has the confidence of 84 percent of the French, 82 percent of the Germans and 74 percent of the Brits. They have no clue as to what he is about, but no matter. Of the three countries, Obama is preparing the big pitch and the stem winder for the Germans. That is a soft choice. Germans like big speeches. They like the glow and fervor created by a mesmerizing speaker. It stirs the Teutonic soul.

Obama will be there in front of an adoring crowd with his head appropriately tilted looking towards the heavens and the Germans will hang on every word. Germans know nothing about Obama except he is not Bush. Obama is an American that appeals to the European palate. That will further eroticse the American left. Hopefully it will end as a net negative to middle America.

  1. If you want to accept a lower standard of living -- that Jimmy Carter told us we had to accept -- then you want to be like France. President Reagan proved that we did not have to accept it.

The fact is there are more Europeans trying to get into the United States. Why would you leave paradise?

If you want to be like Europe, move. And please take Obama and Kerry with you.

  2. wow, you're worried the Obama is speaking to a whole big bunch of Germans and McCain is out there putting his foot in his mouth and doing his best to swallow--

All over CNN on TV at the moment but the only web reference I can find so far:

"In an interview with CBS News' Katie Couric tonight, John McCain made the false assertion that the Surge brought about the so-called Anbar Awakening. Except, as MSNBC"s Keith Olbermann points out, the Surge was announced after the Awakening."

They have the video clip there as well. There's nothing like getting his facts wrong on his claimed stong issue.

  3. And McCain fucked himself by goading Obama into going overseas, thinking he was just a boot camp Senator who was going to step on his crank. All McCain really did is prime America to watch BO look Presidential. It's so bad that he floated the idea of picking his VP this week just to steal some of the headlines.

  7. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled last month that the enemy combatants, including Hamden, had a right to challenge their detentions in U.S. civil courts under what is known as habeas corpus -- an undefined process as applied to the detainees but one routinely used by U.S. inmates challenging their convictions.

"The Supreme Court left many significant questions open," Attorney General Michael Mukasey said Monday as he urged Congress to adopt protocols for the detainees to challenge their detentions in a speech at the American Enterprise Institute.

The attorney general said it was "well within the historic role and competence of Congress and the executive branch to attempt to resolve" those open questions.

There was an American reporter, name unremembered, who was there when Hitler gave some of us most famous early speeches. In one, he was up pretty close. He claimed, and meant it seriously, that he could perceive a strange blue light around Dolph, maybe an evil aura or something. Weird.

  13. “…The SPLM/A will shoot its first bullet against the separatists from within…” (John Garang de Mabior, Radio, SPLM/A Speech, 1983). Succinctly, it’s shocking, mediocre spirit and pretty much disturbing indeed that a respectable leader of any people could be so foolish, diatribe and diabolical to divide his subjects on the basis of ethnicity or tribes.

    ...

For more than five decades the people of South Sudan waged Africa’s longest armed struggle in the quest for social justice, equality, freedom, liberty and the right of self-determination to determine their political destiny, social, economic and cultural well-being as well as the right to development. We have achieved these objectives but we have been let down by the SPLM leadership in the South, unfortunately.

    ...

The North-South divide was perpetrated by lack or the absence thereof of democratization, good governance, and the rule of law, power and resources sharing that culminated to war, destruction and death. The root causes of the North-South divide was the acute lack of power sharing.

I did Bobal. With respect to reprocessing to clean the spent fuel up he thought it much too expensive and problematic Ash

But the French and Japanese, and Brits too I think, do it all the time.

New Process saves 95% of Waste from Nuclear Power Plants!
This is the UREX process for reprocessing nuclear spent fuel rods that can be done to reduce nuclear waste by 95% and supply a great deal more inexpensive and non-polluting energy to the world. This process is called UREX. It extracts the plutonium from spent fuel rods in a way that the plutonium is not usable for making bombs. This has always been the main argument against reprocessing spent fuel rods -- so-called "nuclear waste."
The French have been reprocessing spent fuel rods for over twenty years. The Japanese are now doing the same. Their process called PUREX extracts pure plutonium that can used to build bombs if they want, but they reuse the plutonium as fuel in their power reactors.

  17. COULDN'T HAPPEN TO A NICER GUY!

"Once inside, he interestingly bypassed the lobby and ducked down a side stairs to go to the bottom floor to catch the elevator up - rather than taking the elevator in the main lobby. He went out of his way not to be seen."

Meanwhile, Rielle had reserved rooms 246 and 252 under the name of the friend who had accompanied her from Santa Barbara, Bob McGovern. Rielle was in one room and McGovern was in another with her baby. This allowed her and Edwards to spend time alone, a source revealed.

Edwards went out of the hotel briefly with Rielle, they were observed by the NATIONAL ENQUIRER and then went back to her room, where he stayed until attempting to sneak out of the hotel unseen at 2:40 a.m. (PST). But when he emerged alone from an elevator into the hotel basement he was greeted by several reporters from the NATIONAL ENQUIRER.

Senior NATIONAL ENQUIRER Reporter Alexander Hitchen asked Edwards why he was visiting Rielle and whether he was ready to confirm that he was the father of her baby.

Shocked to see a reporter, and without saying anything, Edwards ran up the stairs leading from the hotel basement to the lobby. But, spotting a photographer, he doubled back into the basement. As he emerged from the stairwell, reporter Butterfield questioned him about his hookup with Rielle.

Edwards did not answer and then ran into a nearby restroom. He stayed inside for about 15 minutes, refusing to answer questions from the NATIONAL ENQUIRER about what he was doing in the hotel. A group of hotel security men eventually escorted him from the men's room, while preventing the NATIONAL ENQUIRER reporters from following him out of the hotel.

Said reporter Hitchen: "After we confronted him about seeing Rielle, Edwards looked like a deer caught in headlights!

"He was clearly surprised that we had caught him at this very late hour inside the hotel.

"Some guests up at this late hour watched the spectacle in amusement from a staircase nearby."

    ...

That led to a lot of first person reports on a meeting with Edwards in the hotel after he left a room where the Enquirer claims Hunter was staying. The reporters tried to close in on Edwards and hit him with the love child questions (among other questions as well) but Edwards ran up the stairs away from the reporters.

    ...

He then reportedly bolted for a hotel bathroom and didn't leave until security showed up. Keep in mind, this is all happening at about 3:00 a.m. on the West Coast.

The dive team watches it all, while combing ship hulls, pilings, pipelines and the channel looking for explosives or any other threats to national and port security and as officers tell us, "operationally, we're out here everyday. We've got eyes on the different activities that are going on, we interact with different entities out here in the maritime envionment, tugboat operators, the fishing boat operators, the longshoremen, we talk to the other eyes and ears out here."

The divers cover every inch of underwater infastructure, crucial to the operation of the port and to the economy of the entire western United States. It's a job that depends on close coordination with hundreds of different public agencies and commercial interests from around the globe.

Part of the P-Dog team (Port Dive Operations Group), divers also get help and support from the United States Coast Guard, who oversee much of what goes on.

  33. Fear not Ash,

I do not think Maverick is capable of winning this thing, however I do believe Obama is capable of losing it.

I am not a person swayed by oratory that is imbedded in a suspect foundation. Between the "em's" and "uh's" I listen to Obama and do not like what he says but am impressed with his delivery.

I find bullshit artists in general quite interesting and entertaining. Con men are always likable rascals.

Like Doug, I instinctively disliked John Edwards the moment I saw him and listened to that treacle laced voice. Obama is much more dangerous than an Edwards. Obama believes in what he says. Obama will say what people want to hear so that he can implement his agenda. Edwards has no agenda except Edwards. Why the American public trusts lawyers is beyond me.

    Thanks for letting me ramble.

    n.
    1. Cloying speech or sentiment.
    2. Chiefly British Molasses.
    3. A medicinal compound formerly used as an antidote for poison.

[Middle English triacle, antidote for poison, from Old French, from Latin thriaca, from Greek thriak (antidotos), (antidote against) wild animals, feminine of thriakos, of wild animals, from thrion, diminutive of thr, beast; see ghwer- in Indo-European roots.]

  36. Thus, Obama can rightly point to the airlift as evidence that maintaining America's moral voice is an essential component of its foreign policy. The United States stands to gain as much from a modern-day Candy Bomber as it risks losing from Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo.

Those who doubt the capacity of government, in the aftermath of Katrina, to mobilize quickly and implement deftly can take heart from the example of organizational whiz Bill Tunner, who turned a slapdash operation incapable of supplying Berlin into a precision drill that kept the beleaguered city going through the long winter.

Harry Truman's steadfastness in the face of contrary advisers -- some argued for yielding Berlin to the Soviets, others advocated a collision course on the ground -- demonstrated how a determined president, having unleashed the atomic bomb, could then find the narrow path between foolish appeasement and full-scale war. Obama can safely argue that Truman's restrained course was wiser than George W. Bush's rush to war.

Drug traffickers, paramilitaries, and guerrillas were running wild. But under the administration of President Alvaro Uribe (who was first elected in 2002), Colombian security forces have cleaned up the cities and reestablished a presence in every single town across the country.

Raleigh, N.C. – Barack Obama continues to hold a solid advantage over John McCain in
Ohio, according to the newest survey from Public Policy Polling.
His lead in the state is 48-40, similar to the 50-39 edge he showed in PPP’s June poll.
Obama trails McCain 46-42 among white voters, but his 91-6 advantage with African
Americans gives him the overall lead.
“Right now Barack Obama is in a pretty good position in Ohio,” said Dean Debnam,
President of Public Policy Polling. “His standing with black voters is not surprising, but
he is also doing unusually well with white voters in the state. Whether he can sustain that
level of support or not will probably determine if he can take this state.”
The results show a significant gender gap, with Obama leading by 20 points among
women but trailing by seven with men. Obama leads in all age groups except senior
    citizens.
