French police received a tip-off about a planned attack in the days before the killing of a priest in Normandy, sources close to the investigation have said. The warning was about the second attacker in the murder, who has just been identified.
“Following DNA tests, it emerged that the terrorist has been identified as Abdel Malik Nabil Petitjean," a source in the Paris prosecutor's office said, as quoted by AFP.
Petitjean – who was shot dead by police outside the church following the attack – was 19 years old and was from eastern France.
He had been on the security forces’ watch list – the co-called ‘Fiche S’, indicating he could present a risk – since June.
Before the attack, police had been searching for Petitjean for several days, and allegedly had information that he was preparing an attack, French media reported, citing sources close to the investigation.
Petitjean’s photo was distributed to the police four days prior to Tuesday’s hostage-taking and killing, and the caption to the picture read that he “could be ready to participate in an attack on national territory."
The other attacker was earlier named as 19-year-old Adel Kermiche, also a French citizen, from Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray.
Kermiche attempted to go to Syria back in 2015, but was deported from Turkey to France and put in prison, where he spent about a year. The authorities then released him on bail, although he was required to wear an electronic bracelet while awaiting trial for alleged membership of a terrorist organization.
The two attackers were shot dead by police at the scene following the attack on Tuesday.
Terrorist organization Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) claimed responsibility for the killing, releasing a video on Wednesday in which the two young men are seen clasping hands and pledging allegiance to the group.
In the footage, Kermiche identifies himself by the nom de guerre Abu Jaleel al-Hanafi, and says Petitjean is called Ibn Omar.
Currently, there are about 10,500 people on the ‘Fiche S’ suspected of links with potential jihadist activity in France, according to data provided by Reuters.

Apartments belonging to eight board members of the radical German-speaking Islamic group DIK were searched by officers in Hildesheim, Lower Saxony.
It comes as part of a crackdown on the group, which is thought to have been encouraging people to travel to Syria and Iraq to join ISIS.
The group ran sermons, seminars and lectures entitled 'the hatred of infidels', according to German media.

More chilling evidence has emerged of the vicious Islamist incitement campaign driving the current campaign of terrorist violence against Israelis.

In a video translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), the imam of the Al Abrar Mosque in Rafah, Gaza, can be seen brandishing a dagger while urging Palestinians to murder Jews, in a fiercely anti-Semitic rant.
Sheikh Muhammad Sallah "Abu Rajab" gave the incendiary sermon just this past Friday. In it, he both praised previous stabbers while offering advice for subsequent terrorists, and boasting that the attacks had resulted in a de-facto "curfew" for Israelis too afraid to leave their homes.
"The world must hear, via these cameras and via the Internet: This is Gaza! This is the place of trenches and guns! This is the West Bank! This is the place of bombs and daggers! This is Jerusalem… Jerusalem is the code word… The soldiers of the Prophet Muhammad are here. Brothers, this is why we recall today what Allah did to the Jews. We recall what He did to them in Khaybar," he said, invoking the slaughter of the Jewish residents of Khaybar by the marauding armies of the founder of Islam, Mohammed.
Delete"Today, we realize why the [Jews] build walls. They do not do this to stop missiles, but to prevent the slitting of their throats," Abu Rajab declared, before pulling out a large hunting knife and brandishing it before his audience, urging them to murder Jews.
"My brother in the West Bank: Stab! My brother in the West Bank: Stab the myths of the Talmud in their minds! My brother in the West Bank: Stab the myths about the temple in their hearts!" he continued, referring to the Jewish temples which once stood on the Temple Mount, but which Hamas and other Islamist groups insist never existed.
"Today, we have declared a curfew [in Israel]," he gloated. "Listen to what the Jews are saying to one another: Stay at home, or go outside to your death. They have no alternative. Oh men of the West Bank, the first phase of the operation requires stabbing in order to bring about a curfew."
This, however, should only be the "first stage" to the ultimate annihilation of the Jewish people, he admonished.
"Now, we are imposing a curfew with daggers, and in the next phase, which is Allah willing, about to be realized… The Islamic military court has made the divined ruling: You will get nothing in our land except for slaughtering or stabbing!"
"Why? The world will say that we are terrorists, that we incite," he asked rhetorically. "Yes! 'Oh Prophet, sufficient for you and for whoever follows you of the believers is Allah. Oh Prophet of Allah, incite the believers to fight.' ...Oh America, oh Crusader aggressors, oh Arab Zionists, oh Zionists from among the criminal Jews: Are we aggressors? You have come of your own volition to be slaughtered on our land."
The cleric ended by offering some tactical advice to his fellow Muslims, calling on them to work in groups instead of acting alone.
"Form stabbing quads," he urged. "We don't want just a single stabber. Oh young men of the West Bank: Attack in threes and fours. Some should restrain the victim, while others attack him with axes and butcher knives.
"Do not fear what will be said about you. Oh men of the West Bank, next time, attack in a group of three, four, or five. Attack them in groups. Cut them into body parts.
