COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Egypt's Islamists target Christian churches, schools in backlash as chaos spreads
Published August 18, 2013
Associated Press

CAIRO –  After torching a Franciscan school, Islamists paraded three nuns on the streets like "prisoners of war" before a Muslim woman offered them refuge. Two other women working at the school were sexually harassed and abused as they fought their way through a mob.

In the four days since security forces cleared two sit-in camps by supporters of Egypt's ousted president, Islamists have attacked dozens of Coptic churches along with homes and businesses owned by the Christian minority. The campaign of intimidation appears to be a warning to Christians outside Cairo to stand down from political activism.

Christians have long suffered from discrimination and violence in Muslim majority Egypt, where they make up 10 percent of the population of 90 million. Attacks increased after the Islamists rose to power in the wake of the 2011 Arab Spring uprising that drove Hosni Mubarak from power, emboldening extremists. But Christians have come further under fire since President Mohammed Morsi was ousted on July 3, sparking a wave of Islamist anger led by Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood.

Nearly 40 churches have been looted and torched, while 23 others have been attacked and heavily damaged since Wednesday, when chaos erupted after Egypt's military-backed interim administration moved in to clear two camps packed with protesters calling for Morsi's reinstatement, killing scores of protesters and sparking deadly clashes nationwide.

One of the world's oldest Christian communities has generally kept a low-profile, but has become more politically active since Mubarak was ousted and Christians sought to ensure fair treatment in the aftermath.

Many Morsi supporters say Christians played a disproportionately large role in the days of mass rallies, with millions demanding that he step down ahead of the coup.

Despite the violence, Egypts Coptic Christian church renewed its commitment to the new political order Friday, saying in a statement that it stood by the army and the police in their fight against "the armed violent groups and black terrorism."

While the Christians of Egypt have endured attacks by extremists, they have drawn closer to moderate Muslims in some places, in a rare show of solidarity.

Hundreds from both communities thronged two monasteries in the province of Bani Suef south of Cairo to thwart what they had expected to be imminent attacks on Saturday, local activist Girgis Waheeb said. Activists reported similar examples elsewhere in regions south of Cairo, but not enough to provide effective protection of churches and monasteries.

Waheeb, other activists and victims of the latest wave of attacks blame the police as much as hard-line Islamists for what happened. The attacks, they said, coincided with assaults on police stations in provinces like Bani Suef and Minya, leaving most police pinned down to defend their stations or reinforcing others rather than rushing to the rescue of Christians under attack.

Another Christian activist, Ezzat Ibrahim of Minya, a province also south of Cairo where Christians make up around 35 percent of the population, said police have melted away from seven of the regions nine districts, leaving the extremists to act with near impunity.

Two Christians have been killed since Wednesday, including a taxi driver who strayed into a protest by Morsi supporters in Alexandria and another man who was shot to death by Islamists in the southern province of Sohag, according to security officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to release the information.

The attacks served as a reminder that Islamists, while on the defensive in Cairo, maintain influence and the ability to stage violence in provincial strongholds with a large minority of Christians.

Gamaa Islamiya, the hard-line Islamist group that wields considerable influence in provinces south of Cairo, denied any link to the attacks. The Muslim Brotherhood, which has led the defiant protest against Morsi's ouster, has condemned the attacks, spokesman Mourad Ali said.

Sister Manal is the principal of the Franciscan school in Bani Suef. She was having breakfast with two visiting nuns when news broke of the clearance of the two sit-in camps by police, killing hundreds. In an ordeal that lasted about six hours, she, sisters Abeer and Demiana and a handful of school employees saw a mob break into the school through the wall and windows, loot its contents, knock off the cross on the street gate and replace it with a black banner resembling the flag of al-Qaida.

By the time the Islamists ordered them out, fire was raging at every corner of the 115-year-old main building and two recent additions. Money saved for a new school was gone, said Manal, and every computer, projector, desk and chair was hauled away. Frantic SOS calls to the police, including senior officers with children at the school, produced promises of quick response but no one came.

The Islamists gave her just enough time to grab some clothes.

In an hourlong telephone interview with The Associated Press, Manal, 47, recounted her ordeal while trapped at the school with others as the fire raged in the ground floor and a battle between police and Islamists went on out on the street. At times she was overwhelmed by the toxic fumes from the fire in the library or the whiffs of tears gas used by the police outside.

Sister Manal recalled being told a week earlier by the policeman father of one pupil that her school was targeted by hard-line Islamists convinced that it was giving an inappropriate education to Muslim children. She paid no attention, comfortable in the belief that a school that had an equal number of Muslim and Christian pupils could not be targeted by Muslim extremists. She was wrong.

The school has a high-profile location. It is across the road from the main railway station and adjacent to a busy bus terminal that in recent weeks attracted a large number of Islamists headed to Cairo to join the larger of two sit-in camps by Morsi's supporters. The area of the school is also in one of Bani Suef's main bastions of Islamists from Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood and ultraconservative Salafis.

"We are nuns. We rely on God and the angels to protect us," she said. "At the end, they paraded us like prisoners of war and hurled abuse at us as they led us from one alley to another without telling us where they were taking us," she said. A Muslim woman who once taught at the school spotted Manal and the two other nuns as they walked past her home, attracting a crowd of curious onlookers.

"I remembered her, her name is Saadiyah. She offered to take us in and said she can protect us since her son-in-law was a policeman. We accepted her offer," she said. Two Christian women employed by the school, siblings Wardah and Bedour, had to fight their way out of the mob, while groped, hit and insulted by the extremists. "I looked at that and it was very nasty," said Manal.

The incident at the Franciscan school was repeated at Minya where a Catholic school was razed to the ground by an arson attack and a Christian orphanage was also torched.

"I am terrified and unable to focus," said Boulos Fahmy, the pastor of a Catholic church a short distance away from Manal's school. "I am expecting an attack on my church any time now," he said Saturday.

Bishoy Alfons Naguib, a 33-year-old businessman from Minya, has a similarly harrowing story.

His home supplies store on a main commercial street in the provincial capital, also called Minya, was torched this week and the flames consumed everything inside.
"A neighbor called me and said the store was on fire. When I arrived, three extremists with knifes approached me menacingly when they realized I was the owner," recounted Naguib. His father and brother pleaded with the men to spare him. Luckily, he said, someone shouted that a Christian boy was filming the proceedings using his cell phone, so the crowd rushed toward the boy shouting "Nusrani, Nusrani," the Quranic word for Christians which has become a derogatory way of referring to them in today's Egypt.
Naguib ran up a nearby building where he has an apartment and locked himself in. After waiting there for a while, he left the apartment, ran up to the roof and jumped to the next door building, then exited at a safe distance from the crowd.

"On our Mustafa Fahmy street, the Islamists had earlier painted a red X on Muslim stores and a black X on Christian stores," he said. "You can be sure that the ones with a red X are intact."

In Fayoum, an oasis province southwest of Cairo, Islamists looted and torched five churches, according to Bishop Ibram, the local head of the Coptic Orthodox church, by far the largest of Egypt's Christian denominations. He said he had instructed Christians and clerics alike not to try to resist the mobs of Islamists, fearing any loss of life.
"The looters were so diligent that they came back to one of the five churches they had ransacked to see if they can get more," he told the AP. "They were loading our chairs and benches on trucks and when they had no space for more, they destroyed them."

  3. The Revenge of the “False Choice”

The NYT’s description of how US officials begged and pleaded with the Egyptian military to avoid a showdown with the Muslim Brotherhood to no avail is full of pathos in more ways than one. It describes how senior American officials, who once bestrode the world were reduced to groveling. How the mighty had fallen. Not only did the US consent to be ignored, Obama paid for the privilege.

American and European diplomats trying to defuse the volatile standoff in Egypt thought they had a breakthrough … Two senators visiting Cairo, John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, met with Gen. Abdul-Fattah el-Sisi, the officer who ousted Mr. Morsi and appointed the new government, and the interim prime minister, Hazem el-Beblawi, and pushed for the release of the two prisoners. But the Egyptians brushed them off. …

    (probly tokin on 'Rat's Bong)

All of the efforts of the United States government, all the cajoling, the veiled threats, the high-level envoys from Washington and the 17 personal phone calls by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, failed to forestall the worst political bloodletting in modern Egyptian history. The generals in Cairo felt free to ignore the Americans first on the prisoner release and then on the statement, in a cold-eyed calculation that they would not pay a significant cost — a conclusion bolstered when President Obama responded by canceling a joint military exercise but not $1.5 billion in annual aid.

They had Obama over a barrel. How did he get there? Because, in the view of the NYT, he insisted on a higher moral standard than heretofore tolerated by previous US administrations.

    ---

Foreign Policy drily noted that the dictator “President Laurent Gbagbo’s Ivorian Popular Front is still listed as a member”, despite the fact that at the time Mubarak was expelled, Gbagbo was under indictment from the International Criminal Court for four counts of crimes against humanity – murder, rape and other forms of sexual violence, persecution and “other inhuman acts”.

But if one came from the tradition that produced Stalin, the Bros could trace their distinguished lineage back to the National Socialist Party. Wikipedia says “Links to the Nazis began during the 1930s and were close during the Second World War, involving agitation against the British, espionage and sabotage, as well as support for terrorist activities orchestrated by Haj Amin el-Hussaini in British Mandate Palestine, as a wide range of declassified documents from the British, American and Nazi German governmental archives, as well as from personal accounts and memoires from that period, confirm. Reflecting this connection the Muslim Brotherhood also disseminated Hitler’s Mein Kampf and The Protocols of the Elders of Zion widely in Arab translations, helping to deepen and extend already existing hostile views about Jews and Western societies generally.”

Barry Rubin of PJMedia is less restrained in his characterization. “There are huge amounts of archival evidence, including documents showing not only Nazi payments to the Brotherhood but also that the Nazis provided them with arms for a rebellion to kill Christians and Jews in Egypt. … There is no evidence that the Brotherhood has changed its positions.”

Thus the authoritarianism, the church-burning, the virulent anti-semitism of the Bros should not have been in the least surprising. What was surprising was that it was surprising to the State Department. Nick Cohen of the Guardian, unable to choose sides in a convention of black hats, resort to legalities. “We may despise the Muslim Brotherhood, but a coup is a coup.” He adds, “Europe and the US need to accept that the Muslim Brotherhood may be foul, but it did not abolish democracy”. How could they when they probably never heard of it?

    1. The Grand Mufti, Arafat's uncle, spent the war years in Germany. By his influence and efforts, he helped form several Islamic SS divisions. Moreover, he was catalytic in the planning and implementation of the Jewish "Final Solution." To this end he supplied Jew hunters and executioners.

Of course, none of this would have been possible without the ebullient volunteerism of the people of the Balkans and Eastern Europe. The Mufti might have had equal success in the US where a Sep 1944 poll showed Americans thought as most dangerous 1) Jews (26%), 2) Japanese (11%) and 3) Germans (9%).

    2. Fast forward to 1948 and the UN partition. Many of the NAZI indoctrinated fanatic Muslims were determined to finish the work that Hitler had begun.

Recall that the Muslim Brotherhood was established in 1928, contemporaries of the NAZIs of Europe. The MB leadership was taken with Hitler's "Mein Kamph" and widely disseminated it in Arabic. It became, if you will, a secular amplification of the Quran. Even today Mein Kamph" is a best seller in the Arab book market.

It was against this backdrop that the Jews fought the war of 1948-1949.

As an aside, by 1948, Jews had purchased over the years about 500,000 acres of land. Deeds came with these purchases. Among those deeds was one that covered about 1/2 the current Golan Heights. A study done by the Brits in 1930 found that the Jews were paying about $1,100 per acre; an acre of prime farmland in Iowa at the same time went for about $110.00 per acre. In terms of the market, Arabs were liberally compensated for their real estate.

As Suzannah Lipscomb points out, Elizabeth's father, Henry VIII, also had at court a fool by the name of Will Somer, a man who used wit to cajole the king out of his dark humors, but who also could be relied on to tell the temperamental and erratic king the truth.

She writes, "When most around the king were yes-men, Henry could rely on Will Somer and other fools to speak honestly. We have evidence of him being able to change Henry VIII's mind. These special qualities of fools -- their ability to bring mirth and their relationship to truth -- explains their privileged, hallowed status[.]"

You can lose democracy even in America or Europe. People warn about the impending death of democracy in the US, but for actual empirical instance of its demise in Europe we need only recall the decades leading to World War 2.

Democracy requires a culture and respect for checks and balances that take a while to build. But to essay it with these bricks of straw was always going to be hard.

Someone said that the easiest way to discredit a good idea is to put a scoundrel in charge of proselytizing it. And perhaps the worst outcome of this fiasco is that democracy, which is usually a good thing, has come to be tainted with a bad odor.

  19. The simple pleasures of getting away

It's 36 years since Voyager 1 was dispatched in 1977 on a mission to send back images of Jupiter's turbulent atmosphere and volcanic eruptions on one of its moons, Io. Then it was due to travel on to Saturn to examine that planet's intricate system of rings and moons. But after travelling more than 11bn miles, where is Voyager now? No one, it seems, knows for sure.

Nasa scientists including Edward Stone, the father of the programme at Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, say Voyager 1 has yet to pass beyond the reach of our sun's radiation. But a controversial study published last week in the Astrophysical Journal claims Nasa scientists misinterpreted magnetic field data and the satellite passed beyond the boundary known as the heliosheath a year ago. Put another way, Voyager 1 has left the solar system.

According to Marc Swisdak, an astrophysics researcher at the University of Maryland and lead author of the study, Voyager 1 made that giant leap on 27 July 2012, when it recorded a permanent drop in heliosphere-produced particles and an increase in galactic cosmic rays from outside the solar system.

"Our three lines of data are consistent with Voyager being outside the solar system," Swisdak told the Observer last week. "There's a class of particles generated within the solar system and we're not seeing them any more. Then there's the question of the magnetic field. You can get outside the solar system without seeing too much of a shift in the data." As Voyager clears the distortion, he says, the magnetic data will begin to conform.

"This is the first opportunity to take actual direct measurements of the particles and the magnetic fields," said Swisdak. "Instead of a indirect, complicated chains of arguments, we can say what's actually out there – and that's something rare in astronomy. Voyager is allowing us to see what's really out there."

Nasa has yet to confirm the finding. Scientists at the California Institute of Technology, led by Stone, believe the craft is travelling through a mysterious region at the edge of the heliosphere. They have said they will know Voyager has left the solar system when magnetic fields emanate from the long arms of our galaxy, not the sun.

But after running 100,000 processor hours of computer simulations on a Berkeley supercomputer called Hopper, Swisdak's team claim Nasa is failing to account for "magnetic reconnection" – when opposing magnetic field lines come together, snap and form new connections. They hypothesise that the magnetic fields of the sun and of interstellar space join in "magnetic islands" that make the border uneven.

Their study echoes claims made earlier this year – and dismissed by Nasa – in the journal of the American Geophysical Union that Voyager had travelled outside the solar system. This time Nasa has taken a more measured approach. "The Voyager 1 spacecraft is exploring a region no spacecraft has ever been to before," said Stone. “We will continue to look for any further developments over the coming months and years as Voyager explores an uncharted frontier."

    {…]

  20. {…}
Conceived of to take advantage of a rare alignment of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune that occurs once every 175 years, Nasa's original programme was designed for a "Grand Tour" of the solar system by harnessing the gravity of one planet to swing to the next. The mission's two probes, Voyagers 1 and 2, used satellites designed to last just five years. Yet they sail on, at 55,000km/h, their cameras shut down and using only essential instruments to ration power from their plutonium batteries that are expected to last until around 2020.

Scientists have estimated that in 40,000 years each spacecraft will be in the neighbourhood of other stars and about two light years from the sun.

Famously, each carries a phonograph record – a 12-inch gold-plated copper disc – containing 115 images and a variety of natural sounds and spoken greetings from Earth in 55 languages, along with messages from the then US president, Jimmy Carter, and UN secretary general Kurt Waldheim.

Leaving the solar system, Stone told Scientific American, will be "a milestone in human activity".

Both Voyagers will likely outlive Earth, he added: when, billions of years from now, the sun swells into a red giant, the Voyagers, albeit without power, will continue on course for the unknown.

Swisdak says: "Nothing comes close to Voyager in terms of interplanetary missions. They wanted to look at Jupiter and Saturn. Then, using a little wizardry, they got Voyager 2 to go by Uranus and Neptune. But nobody ever dreamed we'd get a look at interstellar space."

The war against Copts in Egypt escalates
    Rick Moran

According to this Associated Press report, 40 Coptic Christian churches in Egypt have been either torched or severely damaged just since Wednesday.

Most of the attacks have occured away from Cairo and the watchful eyes of the western press. In other provinces, it is clear that Islamists control the streets and police have, if not facilitated some of these attacks by standing by and doing nothing, are powerless to intercede because they, too, are under assault.

After torching a Franciscan school, Islamists paraded three nuns on the streets like "prisoners of war" before a Muslim woman offered them refuge.

Despite the violence, Egypt's Coptic Christian church renewed its commitment to the new political order Friday, saying in a statement that it stood by the army and the police in their fight against "the armed violent groups and black terrorism."

Defense minister Col. Gen. Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has vowed to rebuild at least some of the churches, but it hardly matters when the government can't guarantee the safety of Christians in majority Muslim communities.

Unless the western world wakes up and demands that Middle Eastern governments protect religious minorities from this kind of persecution, there won't be a Christian church left in the Arab world. Islamists seemed determined to eradicate Christianity from its birthplace - a sad commentary on ignorance, superstition, and hate from many Muslims in the Middle East.

    From the Daily Bobolink

Quirk was also ordered by the Court never to sell, give, loan, rent, advertise, write about, nor mention in speech his infamous 'gravity belts' again.

    .

Luckily, we have a justice system where liberal judges with delusions of grandeur can be reversed on appeal. The case ultimately made its way through the system and up to the Supreme Court. There, in a unanimous 9-1 ruling, the lower court ruling was reversed with Chief Justice Roberts writing the final opinion.

    The opinion pointed out that

    1. The purpose of the belt was 'solely to provide constraint for those who could not ordinarily be constrained by gravity.' (The case of Maui Doug was cited amongst the evidence presented.)

    2. That extensive testing did in fact prove that the belt did meet that objective.

    3. That adequate warnings were provided in English, French, Spanish, Japanese, Russian, Chinese, and pre-historic Swedish that included the specific warning "Do not wear while swimming."

(The court did point out that the warnings were admittedly small yet still met the required legal standard for size, just barely.)

Evidence that became known after the original lower court decision included

    1. The original drowning victim was a Swedish English major and thus could not be expected to understand normal instructions. (Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, in a separate minority opinion did suggest that the defendant, Souls-R-Us, Inc. develop some type of pictograph as a possible solution to what she termed the "Swedish Problem".)

    2. Evidence of possible bribery and corruption also surfaced when documentation was presented that showed the judge in the original case had accepted a windrow of alfalfa and a counterfeit first edition of Whitman's Leaves of Grass from Anonymous-Bob Boobie, a farmer with a checkered past. Boobie was a known criminal and charlatan who often got off scot free by pleading non compos mentis, a defense prosecutors often found impossible to argue against. Boobie was the accused perpetrator of numerous schemes to swindle the entire Souls-R-Us empire from a Mr. Quirk, entrepreneur and philanthropist, who had once tried to befriend Boobie when he was homeless and in dire need of a friend. (When asked about the case and Boobie, Mr. Quirk could only shake his head as he slowly walked back to his limosine.)

The judge in the original case swore the gifts were a bar mitzvah gift for her daughter. When it was pointed out to the judge, Stella O'Hara, that a bar mitzvah was for a son not a daughter and that neither she, nor her husband, nor her daughter were Jewish, she responded, "I know that. Don't you think I know that." Then she was whisked away by her attorney.

Boobie laughed off the incident and stated that he was a member of AIPAC and that the whole matter was a misunderstanding. (According to a Washington Post article, investigators who checked on Boobie's story found that while he had applied for membership with AIPAC, the application is still being withheld two years later. AIPAC officials refused to say why.)

A grand jury has been convened to investigate whether criminal charges should be brought in this Boobie/O'Hara affair.

Mr. Quirk, a very private man, was reportedly exhausted by the whole sordid affair and was forced to retire to his yacht in order to recover. Reports indicate he is currently cruising off the French coast.

    6. A different kind of Ironwood:

"The shaded sanctuary and richer soils created by ironwoods increase plant diversity and provide benefits to wildlife. Ironwoods are too hard to provide nesting cavities for birds, but the cacti that grow beneath them provide such opportunities. Insects abound within the ironwood complex, attracting birds and reptiles. As with other legumes, the ironwood's leaf litter supplies nitrogen to the soil and its seeds provide a protein-rich resource for doves, quail, coyotes, and many small rodents.

The Ironwood tree is found only in the Sonoran Desert, in the dry locales below 2,500 feet, where freezing temperatures are uncommon. In fact the Ironwood's habitat is almost an exact match of the Sonoran Desert boundry. Ironwoods are most common in dry ephemeral washes. Ironwoods function as oases of fertile and sheltered habitat within a harsh and challenging desert landscape. As a tree becomes established, it tempers the physical environment beneath it, creating a micro-habitat with less direct sunlight, lower surface temperatures, more organic matter, higher water availability, and protection from herbivores. Because of these factors, the Ironwood tree has immense ecological value in the Sonoran Desert.

Ironwood grows taller than most trees in Sonoran desert scrub, so it serves as a great perch and roost for hawks and owls. It's dense canopy is utilized by nearly 150 bird species. Add tall ironwoods to the scrubby vegetation on some desert bajadas, and you're likely to add 63 percent more birds than creosote, cactus and bursage alone could support. The ironwood's canopies are so dense that they reduce the probability of extreme heat exposure in the summer."

      http://www.pima.gov/cmo/sdcp/species/iw/illus.html

      A thing of beauty.

Air temperatures may be 15 degrees cooler under ironwoods than in the open desert sun five feet away. Ironwood also shelters frost sensitive young saguaros, organ pipe cactus, night-blooming cereus and many other native plants growing beneath them. More than 230 plant species have been recorded starting their growth within the protective microclimate under ironwood "nurse plants." This also creates an optimum wildflower nursery which is foraged by rabbits, bighorn, and other native species.

In addition to the birds, there are 62 reptiles and amphibians, and 64 mammals that use ironwoods for forage, cover and birthing grounds. At just one site in the Silverbell Mountains, an ironwood-bursage habitat also shelters some 188 kinds of bees, 25 ant colonies, and 25 other types of insects. That adds up to an extraordinary level of biodiversity.

      ***

It is also known as the madroño, madroña, bearberry, or refrigerator tree. The name "strawberry tree" (A. unedo) may also be found in relation to A. menziesii. In the United States, the name "madrone" is used south of the Siskiyou Mountains of southern Oregon and Northern California and the name "madrona" is used north of the Siskiyou Mountains, according to the "Sunset Western Garden Book". The Concow tribe calls the tree dis-tā’-tsi (Konkow language) or kou-wät′-chu.[2] In British Columbia it is simply referred to as arbutus. Its species name was given it in honour of the Scottish naturalist Archibald Menzies, who noted it during George Vancouver's voyage of exploration.[3][4]

      ---

Madronas are native to the western coast of North America, from British Columbia (chiefly Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands) to California. They are mainly found in Puget Sound, the Oregon Coast Range, and California Coast Ranges; but are also scattered on the west slope of the Sierra Nevada mountains. They are rare south of Santa Barbara County, with isolated stands south to Palomar Mountain in California.[5] One author lists their southern range as extending as far as Baja California in Mexico,[9] but others point out that there are no recorded specimens collected that far south,[5] and the trees are absent from modern surveys of native trees there.[10]

  26. Rep. André Carson: Tea party members of Congress want blacks ‘hanging on a tree’

André Carson, a Democratic representative from Indiana and a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, suggested last week that certain members of the tea party in Congress are indistinguishable from violent racists.

“This is the effort that we’re seeing of Jim Crow. Some of these folks in Congress right now would love to see us as second-class citizens,” Carson said at a caucus event in Miami on Aug. 22. “Some of them in Congress right now of this tea party movement would love to see you and me … hanging on a tree.”

A video of the comments was circulated Tuesday by a video producer at “The Blaze,” news and opinion site run by Glenn Beck, the former Fox News host.

The video features only an edited clip of Carson’s remarks, but the lawmaker’s office has confirmed the statement to news outlets including the Washington Post.

The comments were “prompted in response to frustration voiced by many in Miami and in his home district in Indianapolis regarding Congress’ inability to bolster the economy,” Jason Tomcsi, a Carson spokesman, said in a statement issued to news outlets. “The Tea Party is protecting its millionaire and oil company friends while gutting critical services that they know protect the livelihood of African-Americans, as well as Latinos and other disadvantaged minorities. We are talking about child nutrition, job creation, job training, housing assistance, and Head Start, and that is just the beginning. A child without basic nutrition, secure housing, and quality education has no real chance at a meaningful and productive life.”

Tomcsi continued, stating that “yes, the congressman used strong language because the Tea Party agenda jeopardizes our most vulnerable and leaves them without the ability to improve their economic standing.”

Carson’s statement marks the second time in recent weeks the Congressional Black Caucus has used unusually blunt language to criticize the tea party.

Caucus member Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) earlier this month told an audience gathered for a community meeting in California “the tea party can go straight to hell.”

A fight between the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the tea party over racism was brewing earlier this year. Leaders of each group accused the other of being racist. Tea Party Express leader Mark Williams called for an end to that war of words in July and removed from his personal website an imaginary letter to President Abraham Lincoln that accused the NAACP of being racist for using the word “colored” in its name...

On Wednesday, Jessica Bennett, a staff member for Sandberg’s foundation LeanIn.Org, posted on Facebook that she was seeking an unpaid editorial intern to assist in her work for the group. Immediately the post drew criticism in cyberspace, with commentators and Silicon Valley blog Valleywag noting Sandberg’s recent stock sale, which netted her a cool $91 million days before her foundation began recruiting free labor.

Bennett quickly responded with an updated posting stating that the unpaid intern she was seeking was not an official LeanIn.Org position, and a spokeswoman, in an interview with She The People, defended the use of volunteers by LeanIn.Org and other nonprofit groups.

But by Thursday, as the criticism intensified, LeanIn.Org’s president, Rachel Thomas, released a statement on Facebook that read in part:

“The posting that prompted this discussion was for a position that doesn’t fall within LeanIn.Org’s definition of a ‘volunteer.’ As a startup, we haven’t had a formal internship program. Moving forward we plan to, and it will be paid. We support equality — and that includes fair pay — and we’ll continue to push for change in our own organization and our broader community.”"

  33. TEL AVIV – The Egyptian army launched their crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood after evidence indicated the Islamist group was creating its own military and terrorist apparatus, a high-ranking Egyptian intelligence official told WND.

The official further stated al-Qaida-linked jihadists have been making their way to the Sinai Peninsula as part of a Muslim Brotherhood effort to accumulate its own independent force.

That force was being coordinated with the Brotherhood’s main political and militant ally, the Jihadi Salafist group, the official said. Yesterday, Egyptian police arrested Mohammed al-Zawahiri, leader of the Salafist group and brother to al-Qaida chief Ayman al-Zawahiri.

The Egyptian intelligence official further stated Turkey has been aiding the Muslim Brotherhood military and terrorist efforts, including with financial support funneled through international firms.

Turkey has also been working with Hamas to aid the so-called rebels in their fight against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, according to informed Middle Eastern security officials previously speaking to WND.

The Gazan group was specifically asked to help the rebels construct underground tunnels and to advise the jihadist-saturated rebels on adopting some of the tools Hamas previously put to use to confront Israel.

The Egyptian intelligence official confirmed to WND the Hamas-Turkish cooperation and claimed it extended to the Muslim Brotherhood, which asked Hamas to aid in their efforts to build a military wing.

The information may give a larger context for the Egyptian military’s actions and to the ramifications of President Obama’s response to the spiraling violence.

“We appreciate the complexity of the situation,” Obama said in his comments on the situation last week. “The United States strongly condemns the steps that have been taken by Egypt’s interim government and security forces. We deplore violence against civilians. We support universal rights essential to human dignity, including the right to peaceful protest.”

Obama further canceled a U.S.-Egypt biannual joint military exercise, which was scheduled for next month, and warned the U.S. government could reassess financial aid to the Egyptian military.

Meanwhile, Egyptian authorities announced they are considering disbanding the Muslim Brotherhood group as the army continues to break up Brotherhood protest actions across the country.

Those actions have reportedly included attacking churches, Christian homes and businesses.

    2. Some Jews were evicted from the Middle East but most were encouraged to come to Israel. The evictions occurred after most of the Arabs were evicted from Palestine. By the early nineteenth century there were only 10,000 Jews in all of Palestine. The British colonials encouraged the Emigration of Jews from Europe to Israel. The Nazis supplied the incentive. The population of Jews in Israel was about 10% in The early twenties, less than the current percentage of black population in the US.

The British withdrew their support for a Jewish Homeland at the beginning of WWII in favor of the Arabs and the zionists retaliated started their terror campaign against the British colonials.

The Zionists ran the Arabs out and European Jews took their place. The Arabs returned the favor and “encouraged" the Jews to leave Arab lands and the Zionists encouraged the Jews to come to Israel.

Face it, Israel is a European creation. It is built on ethnic cleansing for some, refuge for others. Israel is a product of colonialism and abetted by Europeans murdering Jews. Today there are close to one million Russians in Israel, many of them discovering they were Jews to get out of Russia.

You create fables and can rewrite history all you like, but why bother?

The question is: Why do you think it is necessary to do so?

    3. Talk about revisionist history...

Almost 1 million Jews were ethnically cleansed from their homes in the arab world. More Jews than Arabs displaced.

Fact is today? And yes that is the ISSUE. More Arabs LIVE in Israel as citizens than lived in the entire area in 1948. Now as for the Jews of the arab world almost none.

You can flip stats, create new stories but the truth is easy to see.

Israel now sits on 1/900th of the arab middle east, the arabs control 899/900th.

      That is a FACT.

Arabs make up 20% of the citizens of Israel. Jews are ethnically cleansed from Arab controlled lands.

There is no "right of return" allowed for Jewish refugees.

The Agreement for the Jewish homeland's original agreement was sold out for oil and appeasing the arabs.

Now if you wish for peace? Jordan is an excellent homeland for the palestinians. Gaza is egyptian.

As for the arabs that live in the west bank? Look at those population tables you love to quote so much. 90% of the arabs that live in the west bank didnt live there 200 years ago (and no I am not talking about who was alive)

      Myth

"Arab leaders never encouraged the Palestinians to flee."

      Fact

A plethora of evidence exists demonstrating that Palestinians were encouraged to leave their homes to make way for the invading Arab armies.

The Economist, a frequent critic of the Zionists, reported on October 2, 1948: “Of the 62,000 Arabs who formerly lived in Haifa not more than 5,000 or 6,000 remained. Various factors influenced their decision to seek safety in flight. There is but little doubt that the most potent of the factors were the announcements made over the air by the Higher Arab Executive, urging the Arabs to quit... It was clearly intimated that those Arabs who remained in Haifa and accepted Jewish protection would be regarded as renegades.”

Time’s report of the battle for Haifa (May 3, 1948) was similar: “The mass evacuation, prompted partly by fear, partly by orders of Arab leaders, left the Arab quarter of Haifa a ghost city... By withdrawing Arab workers their leaders hoped to paralyze Haifa.”

Benny Morris, the historian who documented instances where Palestinians were expelled, also found that Arab leaders encouraged their brethren to leave. Starting in December 1947, he said, “Arab officers ordered the complete evacuation of specific villages in certain areas, lest their inhabitants ‘treacherously’ acquiesce in Israeli rule or hamper Arab military deployments.” He concluded, “There can be no exaggerating the importance of these early Arab-initiated evacuations in the demoralization, and eventual exodus, of the remaining rural and urban populations” (Benny Morris, The Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem Revisited, MA: Cambridge University Press, 2004, p. 590.)

The Arab National Committee in Jerusalem, following the March 8, 1948, instructions of the Arab Higher Committee, ordered women, children and the elderly in various parts of Jerusalem to leave their homes: “Any opposition to this order... is an obstacle to the holy war... and will hamper the operations of the fighters in these districts.” The Arab Higher Committee also ordered the evacuation of “several dozen villages, as well as the removal of dependents from dozens more” in April-July 1948. “The invading Arab armies also occasionally ordered whole villages to depart, so as not to be in their way” (Middle Eastern Studies, January 1986; See also Morris, pp. 263 & 590-592).

Morris also said that in early May units of the Arab Legion ordered the evacuation of all women and children from the town of Beisan. The Arab Liberation Army was also reported to have ordered the evacuation of another village south of Haifa. The departure of the women and children, Morris says, “tended to sap the morale of the menfolk who were left behind to guard the homes and fields, contributing ultimately to the final evacuation of villages. Such two-tier evacuation — women and children first, the men following weeks later — occurred in Qumiya in the Jezreel Valley, among the Awarna bedouin in Haifa Bay and in various other places.”

In Egyptian village, Christian shops marked ahead of church attack

The Saint Virgin Mary Church in Al Nazla is one of 47 churches and monasteries that have been burned, robbed, or attacked in a new wave of violence against Christians in Egypt.

Before the violence that shook this small village last week, there were warning signs.

In Pictures Egypt Grapples with an Uncertain Future

On June 30, when millions of Egyptians took to the streets to protest against now ousted President Mohamed Morsi, residents of Al Nazla marked Christian homes and shops with red graffiti, vowing to protect Morsi's electoral legitimacy with “blood.”

Relations between Christians and Muslims in the village, which had worsened since Morsi's election in 2012, grew even more tense as Islamists spread rumors that it was Christians who were behind the protests against Morsi and his ouster by the military on July 3.

Finally, on the morning of Aug. 14, the tension erupted. In Cairo, the police attacked two protest camps full of Morsi supporters, using live ammunition and killing hundreds. When the news reached Al Nazla, a local mosque broadcast through its loudspeakers that Christians were attacking the protesters, say residents. Hundreds of villagers marched on the Saint Virgin Mary Church. They broke down the gate and flooded the compound, shouting “Allahu akbar” and “Islam is the solution,” according to Christian neighbors.

“First they stole the valuable things, and then they torched the place,” says Sami Awad, a church member who lives across the narrow dirt alley from the church. “Whatever they couldn't carry, they burned.”<<<

Since the last person to lay eyes on the Protocols was a gnarled, mute, 16th C. Benedictine monk, sworn to a vow of silence by the high priestess of the Cult of Cybele, intuition is central to absolute knowledge. Only two Elder souls have been made privy to a transliteration of the original Hittite, written on a 6mm x 6mm wolfram tablet, found by a Masonic brother under the floor boards of Mata Hari's attic. An electron microscope is necessary for its reading. Compounding matters, the Protocols are said to originally have been written on a large scroll of Mongolian marmot leather, stowed in a gamma radiating mastodon skull in either the Gobi or Sahara. Insiders say that Geraldo Rivera is on the case, Al Capone's safe in tow.

Cybele was a fat ass, a descendant of the fat ass earth mother statues found in the Paleolithic caves. She didn't go on the great hunts with the men, but stayed at home, sucking up animal fats, giving birth, farting, and doing the cooking.

Mr. Miranda, Mr. Greenwald said, was told that he was being detained under Section 7 of the British Terrorism Act, which allows the authorities to detain someone for up to nine hours for questioning and to conduct a search of personal items, often without a lawyer, to determine possible ties to terrorism. More than 97 percent of people stopped under the provision are questioned for under an hour, according to the British government.

“What’s amazing is this law, called the Terrorism Act, gives them a right to detain and question you about your activities with a terrorist organization or your possible involvement in or knowledge of a terrorism plot,” Mr. Greenwald said. “The only thing they were interested in was N.S.A. documents and what I was doing with Laura Poitras. >>>>At his confirmation hearing, Secretary of State John Kerry said that the United States had to keep providing weapons to Egypt because “The fact that sometimes other countries elect someone you don’t completely agree with doesn’t give us permission to walk away.”

This June, Kerry insisted that we had to keep providing aid to Egypt, despite Morsi’s abuses and lack of democracy, in order to maintain “a channel to Egyptian military leadership, who are key opinion makers in the country.”

But once Morsi was gone, the F-16s that had been the subject of such controversy, and that Obama had insisted on providing to Morsi, were denied to the Egyptian military. Obama was willing to provide advanced weapons to the Muslim Brotherhood, but not to the Egyptian military.

Obama demanded that the Egyptian military go easy on the Brotherhood protesters, but had made no such requests of Morsi. He repeatedly emphasized that foreign aid was on the line in his threats to the new Egyptian government, but had made no move to warn Morsi that foreign aid was linked to his treatment of the political opposition.

During the Morsi era, the administration insisted that human rights could not be linked to Egyptian military or civilian aid. After Morsi, suddenly the same officials were very interested in human rights.

In the days and weeks after Morsi’s overthrow, administration officials and spokesmen made it painfully clear that they wanted the Muslim Brotherhood to participate in any new government.<<<<

    Parasitic Power Producers
    Viv Forbes

The green energy twins, wind and solar, are parasitic power producers. They cannot produce continuous predictable electricity without sucking backup from their hosts -- real power plants using coal, gas, nuclear, hydro, or geothermal energy.

They start their freeloading life by attaching themselves to an electricity network built and paid for by their hosts. They seldom contribute to the capital or maintenance cost of the transmission network, and they force consumers to subsidize the feed-in price received for their unreliable output.

From day one, the green energy parasites force their hosts to support them with electricity during the frequent periods when they produce no power. At times, in cold, still weather, wind farms drain power from the network to keep the turbines from freezing.

All green energy plants in a region tend to produce either peak power or zero power at the same times. This surging creates serious network instability and forces fluctuating output in backup facilities.

Because of this continuous need for backup, not one unit of real power can be closed. This causes periodic overcapacity in the network. All plants generate lower revenue and profits and both producers and consumers bear the cost of supporting the parasites.

Problems already loom in Europe where coal, gas, and nuclear plants face closure because their revenue stream is weakened by overcapacity and interrupted by solar/wind surges.

Green energy has a low capacity factor, intermittent operation, more access and transmission costs. and creates operational inefficiencies in backup plants. It is a destructive and stunningly expensive way to achieve a miniscule overall reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, even if that were a sensible aim. It is a system designed by delirious politicians not prudent power engineers, and its main achievement is to harvest subsidies not energy.

If all green energy welfare was removed, the parasite power producers would die. And unless it is removed, the hosts and the customers will be continuously weakened.

Egypt: Both sides accuse the other of being agents of the Jews

Here is a reminder that the foes of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt are not made up entirely of democratic pluralists. Among them are some (at least) who cling to age-old hatreds, and indulge in the same kneejerk reaction as their opponents do: that any foe, any enemy, must be an agent or stooge of the ubiquitous cosmic enemy, the Jews, whom the Qur'an designates as "the most intense of the people in animosity toward the believers" (5:82).

"Egyptian Association for Change Spokesman: Muslim Brotherhood Implements the Methods of the Jews," from MEMRI, August 14:

Following are excerpts from a statement by Ahmad Taha Al-Naqr, spokesman of the Egyptian Association for Change, which aired on ON TV on August 14, 2013.
Ahmad Taha Al-Naqr: I'd like to focus on the connection between the Jews and the Muslim Brotherhood. The MB have adopted the policy of the Jews, and they are implementing it to the letter, with respect to the invasion of the media, presenting an image of eternal victims…

They use violence and view others as Gentiles. The Jews always say that non-Jews are Gentiles and that it is permitted to kill them – Gentiles can be killed or banished, like they do to the Palestinians.

The [August 14] Rabaa massacre was orchestrated in the same style as the historical Masada massacre of the Jews, so that the MB would be able to continue to harp on about it, thus justifying foreign intervention in the affairs of Egypt. They actually demanded such foreign intervention. Anyone demanding intervention in his country's affairs is committing high treason. They simply clone and implement the image of the Jews.

    And the flip side:

"Al-Jazeera Commentator, Former MB Official, Gamal Nassar: Al-Sisi Is Jewish, Implementing Protocols of Elders of Zion in Egypt," from MEMRI, August 17:

Following are excerpts from a statement made by Gamal Nassar, former media secretary to the General Guide of the Muslim Brotherhood, which aired on the Al-Jazeera network on August 17, 2013.
Gamal Nassar: I was trying to figure out Al-Sisi's origins. I wanted to know more about him. I was surprised to learn, from the Algerian Al-Watan newspaper, that Al-Sisi is of Jewish origin. His mother is called Mulaika Titani, and her brother was a member of the Jewish Haganah organization. Thus, we see that this man, by any standard, is implementing a Zionist plan to divide Egypt.

Within the framework of his plot, he wants to ignite civil war, in order to portray himself as trying to protect state institutions, while he, in fact, is the one who is burning them down. He portrays himself as trying to defend national security, while he, in fact, is undermining it. In short, he wants to set the state of Egypt ablaze.

This is a Zionist plot, and I am willing to be held responsible for what I say. Whoever reads The Protocols of the Elders of Zion and the writings of [the Jews], including those who were writing in the U.S., realizes that this plot was premeditated.
