COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

  2. As a young man, fresh out of uniform, I was stationed in Greece and spent most of my free time in Athens. Athens was a popular R&R choice for many US contract civilians and State Department employees. They would hang out in the same places that were usually on my agenda when in Athens.

Most of those that I met, were arrogant condescending assholes, braggarts and know-it-alls. I wondered why anyone thought that they would be good representatives for our country. Maybe I just met the wrong ones. Maybe not. I was not the only one to come to the same conclusion. US diplomat flees Kenya after deadly car crash - report
Published time: August 03, 2013 01:42 Get short URL

An American diplomat was whisked out of Kenya by embassy staff a day after he was involved in a fatal crash in his SUV with another vehicle, killing a father of three. His widow, who is six months pregnant, now faces eviction.

Latifah Naiman Mariki, 38, whose husband was killed in the crash, has told the Associated Press that neither the driver nor anyone at the US Embassy has contacted her. The widow is now uncertain how she will provide for her unborn child, as well as her three children, aged 20, 10 and 7.

Officials also told the AP that the eight or so other crash victims injured in the accident have yet to receive financial assistance for their hospital bills.

"It is difficult for me to handle this matter because my kids need to go to school. They need everything, basic needs," Mariki said. "And we have no place to stay because we have to pay the rent. We have no money. Even if my kids are sick I have no money to take them to hospital."

The driver of the SUV, Joshua Walde, was an information management officer at the US embassy in Nairobi. On the evening of July 11 Walde crashed into a mini-bus, also known in Kenya as matatus, while on his way home. He gave a statement to police, but because of diplomatic immunity he was not detained.

According to officials cited by the AP on Friday, Walde was said to be speeding in his SUV when he crossed into the center line of the road and rammed into the small bus.

Documents available from police regarding the case included sketches of the incident, showing the American’s SUV turning at a four-way intersection on the edge of the capital of Nairobi, and then driving into oncoming traffic.

"He was driving very fast," said a police officer familiar with the case. Pictures included in the police record show that the SUV hit the front corner and the side of the mini-bus, crumbling its frame. The AP reports that such mini-buses are known to be driven at high speed and erratically as well.

Online details left by Walde, an 11-year veteran with the State Department, showed that shortly after the crash his work history on the networking site LinkedIn was updated to reflect Nairobi in the past tense. A Facebook group formed by a group of concerned Kenyan mothers took up Mariki's case this week, and are raising funds for her family.

After the Facebook group discovered Walde’s LinkedIn profile it was quickly deleted. Members believe that the change indicated Walde would not return to Kenya to face charges, or to offer financial compensation to victims

Michael Greenwald, a spokesman for the US embassy in Nairobi, denied Walde had left Kenya to avoid charges. According to Greenwald the embassy worker who was under investigation following the July 11 accident left the country three days later to seek medical treatment for his arm, reports Nairobi-based The Star.

Former CIA Director Woolsey Warns of Existential Threat to America

Published on Wednesday, 31 July 2013 13:58 Written by Center for Security Policy

Washington, D.C.: On July 29th, President Bill Clinton’s former Director of Central Intelligence, R. James Woolsey, led a panel discussion on the growing – and perhaps imminent – threat of a natural or nuclear electromagnetic pulse (EMP) to the U.S. electric grid and other critical infrastructures that sustain modern civilization and the lives of millions of Americans. The event was sponsored by the newly established EMP Coalition, of which Mr. Woolsey is the Honorary Co-Chair along with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich
Other participants were Ambassador Henry Cooper and Dr. Peter Vincent Pry. Ambassador Cooper led strategic arms control negotiations with the USSR under President Reagan and served as the Director of the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization under President George H.W. Bush. His is currently the Chairman of High Frontier, an organization dedicated to protecting the United States from nuclear attack. Dr. Pry served on the Congressional EMP Threat Commission, as a professional staff member on the House Armed Services Committee and as an analyst in the CIA. He is now the Executive Director of the Task Force on National and Homeland Security, a congressional advisory board dedicated to national resiliency in the face of EMP and other threats.

Highlights of the program included the following:

Mr. Woolsey warned that the sun can inflict localized EMP disasters, like the 1989 Hydro-Quebec geomagnetic storm that blacked out eastern Canada, causing billions of dollars in economic losses. He noted that a recent study by insurance industry leader Lloyds of London estimated that if the 1989 geo-storm struck the east coast of the United States, 20-40 million Americans might be blacked out for as long as two years. A rare geomagnetic super-storm, like the 1859 Carrington Event, would collapse electric grids and life-sustaining critical infrastructures everywhere on Earth, putting at risk the lives of billions.

Scientists estimate that the world is overdue for another Carrington Event, and the Sun has already entered its solar maximum that shall last through 2013, when a catastrophic geo-storm is more likely to occur, Woolsey said.

Mr. Woolsey warned that an EMP catastrophe may also be imminent from terrorists and/or rogue states armed with nuclear weapons. North Korea already has nuclear missiles, Iran nearly so, and these two are actively collaborating. A single nuclear weapon detonated at high-altitude over this country would collapse the electric grid and other critical infrastructures and endanger the lives of millions.

Woolsey emphasized that the hundreds of electric utilities in the United States have thus far not acted to protect themselves from EMP, and cannot be expected to do so voluntarily as national defense and homeland security is a U.S. government responsibility. Woolsey urged that government regulation, by passage of the Secure High-voltage Infrastructure for Electricity from Lethal Damage (SHIELD) Act now before Congress, is necessary to protect the national electric grid.

Ambassador Cooper noted that the world escaped an EMP catastrophe just two weeks ago, when a huge Carrington-class coronal mass ejection crossed the path of the Earth's orbit, but narrowly missed our planet.

Amb. Cooper warned that, given our nation's current state of unpreparedness, if a natural or nuclear EMP catastrophe struck today, blacking out the electrical grid and other critical infrastructures for a year, as many as ninety percent of the American people could perish from starvation, disease and societal collapse. This assessment is from the Congressional EMP Commission that examined the EMP threat for nearly a decade, including performing numerous scientific experiments and producing what is widely regarded as the definitive study of critical infrastructure vulnerabilities and solutions.

Amb. Cooper warned that North Korea may already have the capability to make a catastrophic EMP attack on the United States. On December 2012, Cooper said, North Korea used its so-called Space Launch Vehicle like a Fractional Orbital Bombardment System – a secret weapon invented by the Russians during the Cold War to deliver a stealthy nuclear attack on the United States by orbiting a nuclear weapon over the south polar region, bypassing U.S. Ballistic Missile Early Warning radars (BMEWs) and missile defenses. Cooper noted that the U.S. has no BMEWs radars or missile interceptors facing south. North Korea apparently orbited a satellite over the south polar region on a trajectory and altitude consistent with making a surprise nuclear EMP attack against the United States.

Amb. Cooper said the needed solution would be to utilize the sensors and weapons aboard AEGIS anti-missile ships and such missiles ashore to protect the U.S. southern flank and east coast from nuclear EMP attack and to harden the electric grid by passage of the SHIELD Act.

Dr. Pry warned that a disturbing confluence of events suggests an EMP attack might be imminent. Pry noted that thousands of cyber attacks using computer viruses and hacking are probing the defenses of U.S. critical infrastructures, searching for weaknesses.

Dr. Pry observed that the foreign military doctrines of potential adversaries such as Iran, North Korea, China and Russia, all include acts of sabotage and kinetic attacks – including nuclear EMP attack – as part of their planning for an all-out Information Warfare or Cyber Warfare Operation. Pry noted that recently, in April, a sabotage attempt was made against electric grid transformers near San Jose, CA, that damaged five transformers with fire from AK-47 assault rifles.
Moreover, according to Dr. Pry, the North Korean freighter Chong Chon Gang recently intercepted and undergoing inspection in Panama under suspicion of drug smuggling, was discovered to have in its hold two nuclear-capable SA-2 missiles. The missiles were without nuclear warheads, Pry said, but the incident is disturbingly like the EMP Commission's nightmare scenario of a nuclear EMP attack launched from a freighter off the U.S. coast, to conceal the identity of the attacker and escape retaliation. Pry said "connecting the dots" between cyber attacks, sabotage by AK-47s, a North Korean freighter carrying nuclear capable missiles in the Caribbean may warrant a crash program to protect the nation's electric grid.
All panelists endorsed the SHIELD Act, urged that the Department of Homeland Security develop a new National Planning Scenario focused on EMP, and encouraged other states to follow the example of Maine, not wait for Washington, but pass state initiatives to protect their electric grids from EMP now.

  10. The travel alert was the first of its kind since an announcement preceding the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. It came as Washington prepared to close its embassies and consulates throughout the Muslim world this Sunday over security concerns....

....John Bolton, former U.S. ambassador to the U.N., said the alert indicates the U.S. government must have some "pretty good information" about a possible threat.

Great Britain announced Friday night it would also close its embassy in Yemen "as a precautionary measure" on Sunday and Monday and urged its nationals to leave the country.

Of course there might be something to it.

IIRC, part of the protocol of these groups is to issue a warning of some kind before an attack. Some passage in the koran demands it.

      Learn about Arizona's marijuana laws

Did you know that Arizona has some of the harshest marijuana penalties in the country? For example, the penalty for possession of just one ounce of marijuana can be a felony that carries a potential penalty of 18 months in jail and a $150,000 fine! A 2013 report by the American Civil Liberties Union found that over 55% of drug arrests in Arizona are for marijuana possession, and that blacks are 2.4 times more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession than whites.

Also, in 2009, Arizona passed H.B. 2013, which requires drug testing for public assistance recipients if there is “reasonable cause.” All adult recipients must answer three questions during the application process and must complete a drug test within 10 days, if any of the answers provide “reasonable cause” of illegal substance use or if referred by law enforcement or another agency. Recipients who test positive will be denied cash-assistance benefits for a year.

Maybe rat needs a drug test in order to collect money from the government for services rendered.

I bet it's a major violation of AZ laws to be a pot smoker and own and or fire weapons. Let alone, be employed by the feds or the state.

What does the Colonel think about you being a pothead and playing with weapons?

For a lawmaker who has long raised the ire of some rank-and-file conservatives with his deal-brokering and occasional breeches from Republican orthodoxy, there is a benefit to splitting the Tea Party vote into as many parts as possible.

But this line of reasoning has a potential flaw: South Carolina electoral law stipulates that a candidate must win at least 50 percent of the primary vote to avoid a runoff, and Graham’s chances of reaching that threshold could become even more difficult with additional names on the ballot.

And in a one-on-one runoff , all bets are off for Graham, who would likely have to fight tooth and nail for his political survival...

Normally, it would be laughable. However, since it's McCain, who can tell what he will try.

Lieberman is gone. Hopefully, Graham will have problems in S.C. If it takes a presidential run in 2016 to get rid of the last of the Three Stooges, so be it. However, I am leery of the damage he will be able to do in the meantime.

Spoke to an informant at the FBI.
quot did file that complaint, the EB was scanned with some fancy logarithms, and we are in the clear.

Not only were there no murder confessions, there were no secrets leaked. According to the anoni informant, who was not cleared to speak to bloggers, there is an undocumented foreign agent operating from the Bar, that the FBI has developed a lead on.

Doubt we hear more about that.
The informant was really nervous, commenting upon the surveillance of that unreported foreign agent.

National Security was said to be at risk.

  22. A Plan for Dealing With John Boehner

I think we can all agree that John Boehner is a complete and utter failure as House Speaker. Marble-mouthed, unprincipled, double-dealing and cowardly are among the more positive attributes I can think of. Consider the man's actions over the two-and-a-half years that have elapsed since the Tea Party movement and Constitutional Conservatives brought him to power:

    • Despite an unprecedented series of White House scandals -- including, but not limited to gun-running to Mexican drug cartels, the Benghazi cover-up, IRS-gate, and repeated perjurious testimony to Congress -- John Boehner refuses to name a Select Investigative Committee or demand a Special Prosecutor.

    • In fact, in the case of the Benghazi cover-up, even though 75 percent of House Republicans want a Select Committee formed, Boehner refuses. That's right: John Boehner refuses to name a Special Committee on Benghazi, with dedicated budget, resources and staff -- and won't even tell us why.

    • And what could be the reason? Some have speculated that Boehner has secretly cut a deal with Democrats in exchange for, well, who knows? Suffice it to say that if John Boehner is negotiating for you, you're going to walk out of the room wearing only your underwear. My guess is he really has cut a secret deal with Obama and Reid, perhaps regarding the debt ceiling or some other act of surrender that sells out the American people in exchange for his consolidation of more power.

    • And what is John Boehner's top priority right now? That's right: Amnesty. Legalizing tens of millions of illegal aliens, which we know for a fact will vote by a stunning 8-to-1 margin for Democrats. Brilliant.

    • As for de-funding Obamacare? That, too, Boehner refuses to do, instead holding fan-dance votes to repeal Obamacare, knowing that said bills will never see the light of day in the Senate. The Constitution grants the House of Representatives the power of the purse. Boehner could de-fund Obamacare -- completely -- if he wished, letting Obama try to rally support for his despotic and failed testament to central planning. But this Boehner will not do, because it requires brains, courage, principles and cojones.

So what do we do about John Boehner?

While there are grassroots efforts emerging to primary Boehner in Ohio's 8th District -- and we wish them all possible success -- the time has come to consider an alternative plan. A nuclear option, if you will.

Assuming that Boehner wins his primary in OH-8, I suggest we rally support among Tea Party and Constitutional Conservatives in that district to vote. To vote Democrat.

That single seat has virtually no chance of swinging the majority in the House one way or the other. A newly elected Democrat in that very Red seat will be a back-bencher and virtually powerless. This will give time to the district (and it is a very conservative district by all accounts) to assemble a credible candidate should one not emerge in 2014.

I would never advocate such a tactic in the Senate even though Mitch McConnell is Boehner-lite. In the Senate the odds of taking majority control are simply too tempting to chance returning the dimwitted crackpot from Searchlight, Nevada to a seat of power.

But Boehner, on the other hand, is such an egregious failure, such a cowardly and un-principled operator, that he must be ripped out of the Speaker's chair by any means necessary.

Let's see what happens in OH-8, but I suggest we fund and vociferously support any -- and I do mean any -- Boehner opponent. Enough is enough.

Wynn also cited Graham’s fundraising prowess, noting many of DeMint’s biggest campaign contributors also give generously to Graham.

      Bob,

I forgot to say if you decide to reserve "Clint Holmes" you can reserve and print your tickets. Also you will be able to see the room and it's seating. Go to www.thesmithcenter.com - The Cabaret Theater :) I would get seats as close to the front as possible. The tables are intimate and hold four so you may end up with a single seating with you but that is no big deal. I like the Sunday matinee at 2 PM but in your case you might enjoy instead going at 7:30 PM on Friday or Saturday. I don't gamble so for me Las Vegas is shows, dinning, and shopping. Of course the spa and pool should be fun as well at the Golden Nugget. I don't like downtown much but it is coming back and they are trying to make it nice again. Now the Golden Nugget is different. It is fine! Very nice. If they give you a discount to see their show there because you are staying there do it. The fellow is pretty good at singing impersonations. I have seen him a few times. Sometimes when you are reserved at a hotel they give you a deal on their show. You might want to call the Golden Nugget's room reservations and ask regarding this. :)

I do think for sure while here you should go to the Bellagio Hotel to view the Conservatory which is redone every few months depending on the season and holiday. Beautiful! That is always lovely. After you can go across the street by car or on foot to the Paris Hotel for lunch or dinner at Mon Ami Gabi. You will make reservations but when you arrive you will tell them you want to sit in either the Pavilion room or outside. I like the Pavilion room as it is sort of inside outside. The water fountains at the Bellagio start around 3 PM so you will be able to watch the water show from the restaurant. It is quite charming and I can almost feel like I am in Paris!

      More to come!

She started the Concierge Association of America or whatever it is called, which turned into a big deal. Republican voter, too.

I was thinking Howard Hughes was there during her time, occulting in his rooms at the top, and degenerating badly. Don't know if she took care of Howard or not, probably not, as he didn't allow anyone in there but his lawyers towards the end. heh I will ask her.

Was going to do some gambling for someone but can't recall now if it was even and black or even and red I was to play. So, I will start with even and black, which I think it was, and switch to even and red if I am losing.

Your Evangelical Lutheran Church holds people in regular prayer.

This week we are praying for you.

    God Bless You

You see, we pray for one member each week, round and round, and my number came up.

I don't deserve this, as I hardly ever attend, and most can't stand Martin Luther, but it can't hurt.

I feel they should at least give the Prayee an opportunity to state exactly what it is at which the person wishes the prayers directed.

Are We Solving the Mystery of Atlantis?
    By Daren Jonescu

    >>Thus, the ancients tended to be exquisitely aware of the precariousness of their existence, and the severely limited moment they occupied in the grand calendar. We, on the other hand, take our existence for granted, and assume that we occupy a privileged moment in time -- namely, the "latest" moment. This is why the most profound ancient minds imagined the soul's journey through the afterlife in three-thousand or even ten-thousand-year increments, although they had little solid historical knowledge stretching even a thousand years back, whereas we, who casually discuss the universe in terms of billions of years, can barely remember what happened last week, and never engage in serious speculation on life ten thousand years hence -- let alone our own lives ten thousand years hence.

Atlantis was Plato's mythical speculation (or development of a received speculation) regarding a more advanced human civilization that reason seemed to indicate must have existed at some point in the unending sweep of time. Francis Bacon's New Atlantis revived that speculation, but projected it into a semi-realizable future -- as a practical hope, rather than a quest for cosmic understanding -- thus demonstrating a chief intellectual difference between the ancient and modern West. (This difference may also be observed by comparing Darwinian evolution to its most famous ancient counterpart, that of Empedocles, who conceived of a never-ending cycle, encompassing both evolution and devolution.)

This brings us back to the gradual, and seemingly inevitable, disappearance of handwritten language, and my question as to what might come next. Our age's progressive impulses are rooted in a foolish sense of indestructibility and irreversibility, and in dreams of impending "transformation." Cursive writing, like so many of our noblest and most valuable traditions, now seems disposable; we don't need it, because technology has rendered our former needs obsolete......

......We appear to be fulfilling a prophecy of the ancients, preparing ourselves for an eventual return to our roots -- namely, oral tradition. Or rather, to the precursor to such a tradition: a semi-verbal state of disjointed, prefabricated phrases that carry only vague signification, interspersed with emotive grunts and squeals -- and a devouring sea of violence, which is how men communicate when reason and language fail them.<<
