COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

    2. Israel, a secular and socialist state that was built upon ...
... the Three Pillars of Apartheid

The first pillar “derives from Israeli laws and policies that establish Jewish identity for purposes of law and afford a preferential legal status and material benefits to Jews over non-Jews.”

The second pillar is reflected in
“Israel’s ‘grand’ policy to fragment the OPT [and] ...
... ensure that Palestinians remain confined to the reserves designated for them ...
... while Israeli Jews are prohibited from entering those reserves but enjoy freedom of movement...
... throughout the rest of the Palestinian territory.

This policy is evidenced by Israel’s extensive appropriation of Palestinian land,
      which continues to shrink the territorial space available to Palestinians;
      the hermetic closure and isolation of the Gaza Strip from the rest of the OPT;
      the deliberate severing of East Jerusalem from the rest of the West Bank;

and the appropriation and construction policies serving to carve up the West Bank ...
... into an intricate and well-serviced network of connected settlements for Jewish-Israelis ...
... and an archipelago of besieged and non-contiguous enclaves for Palestinians.”

      The third pillar is
“Israel’s invocation of ‘security’ to validate sweeping restrictions on Palestinian freedom of ...
... opinion, expression, assembly, association and movement [to] mask a true underlying intent ...
... to suppress dissent to its system of domination and thereby maintain control over Palestinians as a group.”

Sixteen rebels have been hanged in Iran in retaliation for the deaths of at least 14 border guards in an ambush, say Iranian news agencies.

The rebels were "linked to groups hostile to the regime", the attorney general of Sistan-Baluchistan province was quoted as saying.

They were hanged in prison in Zahedan, north-east of Saravan, where the border deaths took place overnight.

    5. APARTHEID AND OCCUPATION
More than 5 million Palestinians are denied equal rights by the state of Israel under a system of apartheid, a deliberate policy of racial or ethnic segregation.

Under Israeli military occupation, millions of Palestinians live in conditions which closely resemble the apartheid system that existed in South Africa:
      • No right of free speech, assembly or movement
      • Arrest and imprisonment without charge or trial
      • Torture
      • House searches without warrant
      • Assassination, extra-judicial murder
      • No right to vote for the Israeli government (even though it controls their lives)
Israel controls all Palestinian borders, all imports and exports, and all movement between towns and cities.
THE GAZA STRIP, still surrounded, besieged and controlled by Israel, has been sealed off and effectively turned into the world’s largest open-air prison.

  6. .

ast week, Barack Obama, delivering the clearest and most powerful economic policy speech of his presidency at an event sponsored by the Center for American Progress, identified “the combined trends of increased inequality and decreasing mobility” as “the defining challenge of our time.” The week before, in his first papal exhortation, Pope Francis robustly criticized “trickle-down theories” of economic growth as having “never been confirmed by the facts” and as leaving behind the poor and vulnerable. Soon after being awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics, Robert Shiller told the Associated Press that inequality was “the most important problem that we are facing now today.”

    ---------

The growing income disparity in the US and the world is

...aided and abetted by a dominant narrative defining how the economy grows. According to conventional wisdom, inequality may upset or offend us, but it’s a necessary part of a competitive economy. Economic growth is driven by the wealthy few, who make investments, build businesses, and create jobs—ideally, according to some, in an atmosphere of small government, low taxes and limited regulation. Policy interventions to reduce inequality or support lower and middle-class Americans are assumed to hurt job creation or harm growth.

“Over the years, as I’ve looked for the evidence behind this story, I’ve found it to be flimsy,” Nobel Prize laureate Robert Solow says in a video that premiered last month at WCEG’s launch. “Sometimes there’s not much evidence there at all.”

This tough-love, winner-take-all narrative dominating policymaking is far too limited a way to think about how a complex, modern, diverse economy like ours expands and thrives. The strongest periods of economic growth in the 20th century were also times when incomes rose across the board...

    5. The Invention of the Jewish People
is a book written by Shlomo Sand, an Israeli professor of history at the University of Tel Aviv.

The author wasn’t probing a belief system but Zionist fabrications of a spurious common lineage for people of the Jewish faith.

Sand argues that the idea of Jews having a common ethnic identity is implausible because,
as with Christianity and Islam, Judaism was originally a “proselytising religion”.

The notion of Judaism as a “race”, rather than a religion of various races, is without foundation.

The recent study by John Hopkins geneticist Dr Elhaik confirms...
that the common genome structure of the European Jew gravitated towards an origin in old Khazaria.

“The majority of Jews do not have Middle Eastern genetic component,” he told Israeli newspaper Haaretz.

Founded on a mélange of myths and manufactured historical tales,
Israel has failed the archaeological test of time and is now exposed by DNA science.

Today’s genetics prove unequivocally that in 1948 “the children of the original Jews” were replaced by converts ...
With no roots in the Middle East.

    3. The key question is the identification of a regime that practices systematic oppression and domination by one group over another.
How then does it apply to Israel?
To answer that, we need to clarify another concept: Israel.

Although usually seen as residing within its pre-1967 boundaries, the Israeli regime exercises control over Palestinians in the occupied territories of the West Bank and Gaza.
For the past 46 years, all residents within greater Israel have lived under the same regime, which claims to be the sole legitimate political and military authority.

The state controls the territory between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, ruling over eight million rights-bearing citizens (75% of whom are Jews) and four million Palestinian subjects denied civil and political rights. Millions of Palestinian refugees (who were born in the territory or whose direct ancestors were) cannot set foot in their homeland, let alone determine its political future as citizens.

    2. What Israeli Historians Say About 1948 Ethnic Cleansing
      By Charley Reese

In an article in the Ha’aretz newspaper, Danny Rabinovitz wrote,
“What happened to the Palestinians in 1948 is Israel’s original sin...
Between the 1950s and 1976, the state systematically confiscated most of the land of its remaining Palestinian citizens.”

      Shahak stated in his article,
“In this context let me mention the pioneering work of Erskin Childers [Irish journalist].
Childers was first to show that the Zionist claim that Arab propaganda had called on the Palestinians to run away from their homes was a gross lie.

He inspected all broadcasts [the BBC recorded them and kept transcripts as did the American government] of the Arab radios of the time to find that no such call had ever been made.”

Finally, this quote from the diary of Yitzhak Tabenkin, a charismatic leader of the kibbutz movement. In his diary, Tabenkin stated,
“the ideals of Hitler which I like:
      ethnic homogeneity, the possibility of exchange of ethnic minorities;
the transfers of ethnic groups for the sake of an international order which for me are a particularly valuable feature.”

No wonder some people prefer myth to truth.

On average, all Ashkenazi Jews are genetically as closely related to each other as fourth or fifth cousins, said Dr. Harry Ostrer, a pathology, pediatrics and genetics professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and the author of "Legacy: A Genetic History of the Jewish People" (Oxford University Press, 2012).

      Maternal DNA

Richards and his colleagues analyzed mitochondrial DNA,
which is contained in the cytoplasm of the egg and passed down only from the mother,
from more than 3,500 people throughout the Near East, the Caucusus and Europe,
      including Ashkenazi Jews.

The team found that four founders were responsible for 40 percent of Ashkenazi mitochondrial DNA, and that all of these founders originated in Europe.
The majority of the remaining people could be traced to other European lineages.

All told, more than 80 percent of the maternal lineages of Ashkenazi Jews could be traced to Europe, with only a few lineages originating in the Near East.

The move was publicised in a statement from Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office, the Associated Press reported. Students will receive scholarships to "engage international audiences online" and combat anti-Semitism and calls to boycott Israel, it was alleged.

In 2012, a Palestinian-run blog reported similar arrangements between the National Union of Israeli Students and the Israeli government. Students would be paid $2,000 to post pro-Israel messages online for five hours a week.

According to Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz, the most recent proposition is being spearheaded by Danny Seaman, who was slammed by the media for writing anti-Muslim messages on Facebook.

Students will be organised into units at each university, with a chief co-ordinator who receives a full scholarship, three desk co-ordinators for language, graphics and research who receive lesser scholarships and students termed “activists” who will receive a “minimal scholarship”, the Independent reported.

The IDF launched an investigation after receiving a Palestinian report via the civil administration about the shooting of a teenager.

“During activity initiated by the IDF near the Jalazone refugee camp, a report was received about a Palestinian teenager who was shot and killed. The circumstances of the incident are being checked,” the IDF Spokesman’s Office said.

The IDF Central Command is gathering information on what exactly occurred, and an army source said Saturday that details were still sketchy.

According to initial information that was made available to the army, a soldier fired shots in the air, possibly during a clash with Palestinians, but it remains unclear what occurred afterward.

Michaeli said she had no other details about the circumstances of teenager’s death.

The Palestinian-Israeli conflict is not just an issue of military occupation and Israel is not a country that was established “normally” and happened to occupy another country in 1967.

Palestinians are not struggling for a “state” but for freedom, liberation and equality, just like we were struggling for freedom in South Africa.

A 14-year-old Palestinian boy was shot and killed by Israeli soldiers on Saturday, Palestinian sources said.

Eyewitnesses said the boy, Wajih Wajdi al-Ramahi, was shot in the back by an Israel Defense Forces sniper near a school in the Jalazun refugee camp, north of Ramallah. He was taken to a hospital in Ramallah, where he was pronounced dead.

The IDF Spokesman’s Office said the army has received the report of the boy’s death and is looking into the incident.

The witnesses said no clashes preceded the shooting, nor have any arrests been reported in the area. But the IDF confirmed that it was conducting an operation near Jalazun at the time of the reported shooting.

The boy’s father, Wajdi al-Ramahi, told the Palestinian news agency Ma’an that a soldier in a watchtower near the settlement of Beit El shot his son “as if he were a bird” while the boy was out walking.

“The soldiers wanted to pass the time and shot at him,” Ramahi said. “They always shoot at the young people. This was cold-blooded murder.”

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the shooting. “This was a cold-blooded assassination perpetrated by the occupation regime,” he said in a statement. “The Government of Israel bears responsibility for this organized terror against innocent children ... This policy is destructive for the peace process.”

A week ago, a 24-year-old Palestinian was killed by a Border Police volunteer near the entrance to Petah Tikva’s Yarkon Cemetery during an operation to arrest Palestinians who were in Israel illegally. The volunteer initially claimed the Palestinian had attacked him with a sharp object, but later changed his story, saying there was no sharp object, but he had nevertheless been attacked.

Now, now kids, it's Tuesday, the weekly day of reconciliation.

In the spirit of that reconciliation, once again it falls to the old Quirkster to take the first step toward restoring harmony to the blog.

It has been brought to my attention that I am too often guilty of using salty language, words like dick and asshole, words that are perfectly functional, understandable, and whose meaning can be found in any standard dictionary, yet whose meanings in those tomes are often proceeded by the phrase usually vulgar. I recognize my shortcomings in this area.

Now, despite the fact, that there are slimy cowards here who under the cover of the anonymous tag falsely put vulgarity into the purported words of other posters including recently those of one of the female posters, cowards with small minds who use childish potty humor for their amusement, cowards who are who not worth the spittle it would take to spray them, cowards no better than the excrement I might pick up on my shoe while taking my dogs to a dog park.

    and

despite that there are others here who blithely throw around words like anti-Semite and racist with no cause other than simple pique, words that in most societies are a step down from any common vulgarities I might use,

yes, despite all this, I still vow to do the 'right thing' for

In the first instance above, I recognize that those who use the anonymous tags in the manner described are merely sick little creatures similar to many of the other perverted anomalies we read about in the back pages of newspapers today or on police rap sheets or on certain lists.

In the second case, it would be dishonest of me to use the race baiters here as an excuse since their petty mewlings mean little to me except as indications of the depths some will drop to when arguments fail and the frustrations rise.

So, yes despite all of this, the Quirster will take the first step towards comity.

My early New Year resolution is to attempt to eliminate common vulgarities from my posts here. While a few 'nerds' and 'hicks' and 'pina colada drinking pineapple head's' may be filter into our little imbroglios here, I will attempt to eliminate such vulgarities as 'dick' and 'asshole'.

Please do not thank me. I am uncomfortable accepting praise.

Sounds good to me. We shall see.

Washington — U.S. employers advertised the most job openings in more than five years in October, and the number of people quitting also reached a five-year high. The figures are an encouraging sign for the unemployed.

The Labor Department said Tuesday that job openings rose 1 percent to a seasonally adjusted 3.93 million. That is the highest figure since March 2008, three months after the Great Recession began.

And the number of workers who quit rose 2.5 percent to 2.39 million, the most since October 2008. More workers quitting can signal a healthy job market, because most of those people likely either have a new job or are confident they can find one.

Total hiring, though, slipped 2.6 percent to 4.5 million after reaching a five-year high in September. Still, overall hiring has risen 5.2 percent in the past year.

More hiring, job openings and quits point to a more dynamic job market. That trend creates more opportunities for people out of work or looking for a new job.

Is the F-35 the new F-4?

Yet it didn't start off as a popular aircraft. Just as the F-35 began as a Marine Corps strike aircraft until it became the multi-service Joint Strike Fighter, the F-4 was born in 1959 as a Navy carrier-based interceptor, until McNamara again wanted a common fighter for all the services.

Like the F-35, the F-4 was based on a conception—or a gimmick—of what future air combat would look like. The F-35 was born of the belief that fighters must use stealth and possess the ability to share tactical data with other aircraft—all in order to surprise and pick off their opponents.

For its part, the F-4 was based on the conviction that air combat would be waged from beyond visual range using long-range, radar-guided missiles.

We don't know if the F-35's design philosophy will prove correct, but we learned the hard way that the Phantom’s did not. The Sparrow radar-guided missile fizzled, and in any event U.S. aircraft were forbidden to conduct beyond-visual-range attacks over North Vietnam. Instead of long-range aerial sniping, U.S. F-4 pilots found themselves engaged in low-speed dogfights against less sophisticated but far more agile MiG-21s and MiG-17s.

  31. Israel approves detention without charges for African migrants
    December 10, 2013 9:24AM ET

Undocumented immigrants from Africa seen as 'infiltrators' threatening Israel's demographic character
    Topics: International Middle East Israel

Israel's parliament has approved a law which allows illegal immigrants from Africa to be detained for up to a year without trial in the latest in a series of measures aimed at reducing the numbers of African migrants in the country.

The new bill passed by 30 votes in favor to 15 against during a late-night vote in the 120-member Knesset, Israel's parliament, and was announced Tuesday. A previous law, which was overturned by the Supreme Court in September, had set a maximum detention period of three years.

Supporters of the bill in the government see the migrants as illegal job-seekers, but critics say many of the migrants are asylum-seekers fleeing hardship and persecution in their homelands.

Members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing Likud party praised the new legislation. Interior Minister Gideon Saar said it would "allow us to keep illegals away from our cities."

Miri Regev, another Likud Knesset member, said Israel should "send them all back to their countries."

"This law is needed in order to deter potential infiltrators. The present reality is a human ticking time bomb," Regev, who also heads the Knesset's Interior Committee, told parliament.

But others, like Zahava Galon, head of the left-wing Meretz party, said the migrants were no threat to Israel's Jewish identity.

"Is this how we, as a people who have sought asylum, treat human beings?" she asked on Israel Radio.

    Detention facilities

A recently built Israeli fence along the Israeli-Egyptian border has effectively choked off illegal African migration, but there are already an estimated 50,000 Africans living in Israel, most of them Sudanese and Eritrean nationals.

The new regulations, which opponents predicted would also be challenged in the Supreme Court, enables authorities to send migrants, now living illegally in Israeli cities, to what the government describes as "open facilities".

Under the law, their detention would be open-ended, pending resolution of their asylum requests, implementation of deportation orders or voluntary repatriation.

The first such open facility, which can hold several hundred people, is due to begin operating this week in the southern Israeli desert.

The facility, to be inaugurated on Dec. 12 and run by the Israel Prisons Services, will be open during the day but locked at night, and it will initially house up to 3,300 people, Haaretz, an Israeli newspaper, reported. It said capacity could be expanded to hold up to 11,000.

Migrants detained there will be able to leave the facility during the day but must return at night, and they will not be allowed to seek employment. Women, children and families will not, at this stage, be sent to the complex.

Tuesday's legislation comes after the Israeli cabinet approved measures in November aimed at tackling the question of illegal immigrants who, according to the government, "disturb the public order." These measures included a crackdown on employers who house illegal immigrants and financial incentives for those immigrants that agree to return to their country of origin.

Israel has been trying to persuade them to leave voluntarily in return for a payout. Some 1,700 Sudanese and Eritreans have gone home this year, the Interior Ministry said.

  32. {...}

    'Racism and xenophobia'

Despite the law's passage, human rights groups worry that easing the process of deporting African migrants in Israel would put them under threat if they returned to their countries of origin.

Many Sudanese, including hundreds who escaped from conflict and humanitarian disaster in Darfur, have been in Israel for several years, living in legal limbo without formal refugee status.

Tens of thousands of Africans, many working in low-paying jobs as cleaners and dish washers, still populate poor neighborhoods of Tel Aviv and other Israeli cities.

But NGOs worry about a growing anti-African immigrant sentiment in Israel.

”The prevalent attitude toward African asylum seekers in Israel in 2012 was one of racism and xenophobia. Over the course of the year, Israeli citizens burned, beat, cursed, and looted on a scale and in a manner never seen before,” according to a 2012 report by the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI), an Israeli human rights organization.

“Molotov cocktails were thrown at the homes of asylum seekers and at a kindergarten in the Shapira neighborhood of Tel Aviv...Three Eritrean asylum seekers were stabbed in the Shapira neighborhood and a demonstration against so-called ‘infiltrators’ in the Hatikva neighborhood of Tel Aviv descended into a display of unbridled violence.”

The two parliamentarians, Ahrar reported, are the Secretary-General of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) Mahmoud Al-Ramahi and PLC member Yasser Mansour.

This is the second time that the occupation authorities have renewed their administrative detention for another six months.

Al-Ramahi was detained in October 2012, and Mansour was detained one month later. Both were accused of inciting against the Israeli occupation and supporting the Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, the Israeli occupation also renewed the administrative detention of prisoners Mo'ayad Shurrab and Ismail Al-Soweeti.

Both went on hunger strike and the occupation authorities pledged to release them after their administrative sentences ended if they agreed to break to strike. "By this renewal, the Israeli occupation broke its promises of release," Ahrar noted.

According to Ahrar, 15 PLC members are currently being detained by the occupation authorities. 11 of them, who are affiliated with Hamas, are under administrative detention.

Other than in Mexico and Malaysia, which while democratic are not exactly considered the most developed democracies, administrative detention has never been used against domestic criminals – such as organized crime – who as of now must be brought to trial and can be detained only for set periods defined by civilian courts. (Trinidad and Tobago also has had periods of emergency rule.) Both Mexico and Malaysia’s democratic bodies endorsed administrative detention in the wake of major upticks of organized crime, similar to the circumstances in Israel, where the idea has gained some popularity following last week’s attempted car bombing of a prosecutor of organized crime.

It appears China has its debt problems too.

China's addiction to stimulus became a danger only somewhat recently.

For most of the last three decades, the formula worked: Local governments borrowed money; they spent it building airports, highways, and apartment complexes. The economy grew and they paid back the loans.

Starting in 2008, however, China went on a binge of debt-fueled spending that produced some misguided projects - think Olympic-sized stadiums in third-tier cities. That yielded a wildly increased debt-to-GDP ratio.

From 2005 to 2012, IMF data show, the total volume of debt in China's non-banking sectors soared from 25.8 trillion yuan to 91.6 trillion yuan, or 14.7 trillion dollars.

Debt in China amounted to 182 percent of GDP at the end of 2012, up from 167 percent the year before, according to an analysis of local government data. By comparison, the US debt-to-GDP ratio is now 73 percent, according to the Congressional Budget Office, twice the percentage it was in 2007.

As China's economy has started to slow, that lopsided ratio has become more and more of a concern...

As noted in the article, the Chinese communist system acts as a governor preventing the system from collapsing.

  37. First lady Michelle Obama sits off to the side, somber, dignified, as the world remembers Mandela. Yet next to her like some goofy adolescent who hasn't yet been taught how to behave properly at a memorial service — her husband — is snapping a memorial to himself.

    President Selfie.

That's what he's being called now, and it blew up on the Twitterverse. It's not the most compelling photojournalism in history. But it is clear, and as pointed as a pin.

Obama and Denmark's Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt extend their arms, hands on the cellphone, to take the self-portrait. British PM David Cameron leans in. They're as bubbly as school kids ordering a happy meal.

Why would a president take a selfie at a memorial for Mandela? Because it wasn't about Mandela.

    It was about Barack.

And isn't it always about Barack?
