COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Compared to the 20th century it was a riffle.

And something did come of it. You ought to be taking aim at Deuce, who thinks Lincoln was evil incarnate, and presumably that slavery would have just withered away, like the State in Marxism. And thinking of that nightmare which is history, it's hardly a riffle.

Slavery ended everywhere in the Americas within about a thirty year period. A civil war was fought in only one of them. All the American politicians on two continents except one could get the job done without a murderous calamity. Lincoln was the exception.

The Palestinian-Israeli conflict is not just an issue of military occupation and Israel is not a country that was established “normally” and happened to occupy another country in 1967.

Palestinians are not struggling for a “state” but for freedom, liberation and equality, just like we were struggling for freedom in South Africa.

    2. Three key features characterize Israeli apartheid:

      • Four million Palestinians in the Occupied Territories lack the right to vote for the government that controls their lives through a military occupation.

In addition to controlling the borders, air space, water, tax revenues, and other vital matters pertaining to the Occupied Territories,
Israel alone issues the identity cards that determine the ability of Palestinians to work and their freedom of movement.

      • About 1.2 million Palestinian Israelis, who make up 20 percent, or one-fifth, of Israel’s population, have second-class citizenship within Israel, ...
... which defines itself as a Jewish state rather than a state for all its citizens.

More than 20 provisions of Israel’s principal laws discriminate, either directly or indirectly, against non-Jews, according to Adalah: The Legal Center for Minority Rights in Israel.

Millions of Palestinians remain refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and elsewhere, unable to return to their former homes ...
... and land in present-day Israel.

Even though the right of return for refugees is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Prosperity and property rights are inextricably linked. The importance of having well-defined and strongly protected property rights is now widely recognized among economists and policymakers. A private property system gives individuals the exclusive right to use their resources as they see fit. That dominion over what is theirs leads property users to take full account of all the benefits and costs of employing those resources in a particular manner. The process of weighing costs and benefits produces what economists call efficient outcomes. That translates into higher standards of living for all.

It is only in the last few decades, however, that economists have accepted the importance of property rights.

In the 1930s, the Finns and Estonians enjoyed a similar standard of living. The two countries are virtually neighbors. Their languages share a common linguistic root, and they are culturally similar and share many values. (Despite being a Baltic country geographically, Estonians consider themselves to be a Nordic people.) Depending on the measure employed, in 2000 the average Finn earned two and a half times to more than seven times what the average Estonian earned. Fifty years of Communist rule surely had something to do with the gap in incomes that opened between the two countries.

In the past, substantial differences existed between the standard of living in East and West Germany—two countries with essentially the same resources, education, culture, language, religion, history, and geography. Why the tremendous income differences?

Hong Kong and Singapore are city states, almost completely lacking in natural resources. They border much larger and poorer neighbors. Hong Kong in particular experienced long periods of immigration from its poorer neighbor, mainland China. Yet both island nations sustained periods of annual growth of real per-capita GDP at 5 percent for a long period. Singapore’s real per-capita GDP doubled from 1962 to 1971.6 The real per-capita GDP of Hong Kong, a former colony of Great Britain, now exceeds that of the mother country ($25,153 vs. $23,509 at PPP in 2000). The paradoxes abound. Despite its own recent economic miracle, China’s real per-capita GDP in 2000 was still just under $4,000. Taiwan’s is over $17,000, more than four times China’s. (Both measured in PPP.) Prof. Allan Meltzer has recently commented on these near-laboratory experiments in development:

Prof. Allan Meltzer has recently commented on these near-laboratory experiments in development:

In each of these comparisons, culture, language, and traditions are the same. Outcomes are markedly different. The countries with capitalist institutions and the market system grew richer; the others faltered or went backwards. A South Korean now lives on an average income about equal to average incomes in the United States in 1945. His North Korean cousin, if he manages to survive, exists by eating roots and grass. My colleague Nick Eberstadt points out how much diet and living standards matter: seven-year-old South Korean boys are 8 inches taller than North Korean boys.

Actual, historical economic development of countries cannot be explained by the presence or absence of natural resources. Resources are neither necessary nor sufficient for development. Development has occurred in inhospitable circumstances, and lack of development has occurred in countries rich in natural resources. Oil’s “curse” is well known. Real per-capita income in Saudi Arabia is a fraction of what it once was. Nigeria, an oil producer, is categorized as a highly indebted poor country. And, Argentina, rich in natural resources including oil, has recently experienced a long recession due to its bad policies and defective institutions.

Roll and Talbott find that nine institutional variables explain over 80 percent of the international variation in per-capita gross national income,...
... with property rights (+) and black market activity (-) having the highest levels of significance.
      The other variables are ...
regulation (-), inflation (-), civil liberties (+), political rights (+), press freedom (+), government expenditures (+), and trade barriers (-).

WH Functionary Fired for Candid Tweets
    J. Robert Smith

USA Today reports that White House official, Jofi Joseph, has been axed for sending hither Tweets revealing secret information, insulting Obama advisors, and questioning the Administration's Benghazi yarn.
Jofi had been doing so for two years, proving that ObamaCare might last longer than anyone believes. Joseph tweeted under the not-so-clever nom de guerre "@NatSecWonk."

    Reports USA Today:

While tweeting as @natsecwonk, Joseph criticized White House policy as well as the intellect and appearance of his bosses. He even insulted officials by name, including Secretary of State John Kerry and former National Security Advisor Tom Donilon, The Daily Beast reports.

"I'm a fan of Obama, but his continuing reliance and dependence upon a vacuous cipher like (White House senior advisor) Valerie Jarrett concerns me," he tweeted.

Jofi might be in bad favor with the prez and his former colleagues, but his candor is a breath of fresh air from an administration all about spin and enforcing the party line.
But the precocious Jofi lost me when he suggested that "someone... should get rid of Sarah Palin and her white trash family."
Vile disparagement and veiled threats against conservatives and their kin are de rigueur among our leftist brethren, so, evidently, Jofi's poisonous tweet aimed at Palin and her family didn't raise red flags amongst his White House chums.

The breaker for Tweetin' Jofi was casting doubt on Mr. Obama's and Ms. Clinton's Benghazi fiction.

The search intensified after @NatSecWonk repeatedly expressed doubts about administration accounts concerning a Sept. 11, 2012, attack in Benghazi, Libya.

Oh, my, so Jofi, part of the Administration's national security apparatus, thought - or knew - that there was something queer about the president's Benghazi soft-peddle?

Jofi needs to be yanked before the House Oversight Committee for a little probing, don't you think?

  14. .

We probably won't get a good idea of the cost effect of ACA for 3 - 6 months (at least). Right now, the system is just too fucked up to get a good reading. To say everyone is saying 'I got a great deal' is ridiculous. It seems like something that would have come from someplace like E.J. Dionne or the Krugman Blog. Just yesterday, I posted an article from the Detroit News that cited one provider, Michigan Group Benefits Insurance, saying that the average price increase for its members will be 23%. If anyone is happy with a 23% increase then perhaps I'm wrong.

The system was supposed to save everyone (average family?) $2,200 hundred a year according to Obama. Obviously, that is not going to happen, not when the system was designed to pay for 40 million new enrollees. (Although, all I've heard lately from the pols is 15 million.) Obviously, those type of savings aren't going to happen. We won't know what it will cost until they get the system fixed.

We've known right along that this system is a massive wealth redistribution system. Some will make out like bandits while many more will suffer under it, at least, from a cost basis.

There are many more reasons to question the effectiveness of the ACA, many of them mentioned here. Those too will play out over time and be judged accordingly.

However, the main focus of this stream has been the launch. Yesterday, I look at our two papers here, one conservative and one liberal. I looked at the WaPo and the NYT. I looked at the Guardian and RealClearPolitics where there were quite a few articles from various sources. Admittedly, all I looked at was the front page on the online addition, but there was not one article stating anything positive about the launch other than the one point that the state sites were doing better than the federal sites which were really screw up.

The actually crime, is that the Feds knew the launch would be a disaster. They were warned in August and a week before the launch they tried a trial with a mere 2,000 people and it completely shut the system down. They decided to launch anyway. Evidently, they figured they could fix it on the run not realizing the enormity of the problem (up to 100,000 lines of code need to be re-written).

Normally, in a failure of this size and effect, some one would be fired. But in this administration Ms. Sabelius has no worries. She won't be fired or demoted. Need I list all the scandals that have occurred in this administration? And yet, absolutely no one has 'actually' been held accountable, no one fired, no one actually demoted, with only the one exception I can think of. That one being the Deputy Chief of Station in Benghazi, who was demoted (his career effectively over at State) after his testimony before Congress didn't match the administrations storyline.

This from the most transparent administration in history.

Two policemen patrols next to "waiting benches" on August 24, 2013 at a sex drive-in in the city of Zurich
AFP - Switzerland's first sex drive-in, which opened two months ago in a bid to take prostitution off Zurich's streets, has been a success, the city said Tuesday following an initial evaluation.

"After two months I can say that this guarded prostitution site is working," Michael Herzig, director of social services for sex workers in the city, told reporters.

Zurich opened the fenced-in site, which is only accessible by car, in an industrial sector on the outskirts of town in August to move sex workers out of the city centre and provide them with a safer working environment.

The drive-in, approved by 52.6 percent of Zurich voters in a March 2012 referendum, has a track where the sex workers can show off their assets and negotiate a price, and nine so-called "sex boxes" where they and their clients can park and conclude the transaction.

Machines resembling parking metres have been installed, and the prostitutes are required to contribute 5.0 Swiss francs ($5.40, 4.05 euros) each night in taxes to help Zurich cover the cost of running the place.

Security guards are on hand to ensure there is only one man in each car coming in, as well alarm buttons in each "sex box", on-site doctors and social workers.

"We did not have any major problems, such as with pimps, violence or the neighbourhood," Herzig said.

He said he was surprised things had gone so smoothly.

An average of 14 sex workers had used the site each day since it opened, he said.

That is fewer than half the 30-odd who had been working on Sihlquai, in downtown Zurich, the city's most notorious red-light street until prostitution was banned there in August.

But the figures do suggest prostitutes are embracing the new system, despite concerns the strictly controlled environment would scare away clients, he said.

Herzig said the tight control was key to its success, with the constant presence of municipal staff helping sex workers operate beyond the clutches of pimps.

He said similar schemes in other European cities had been hobbled by a lack of resources that saw pimps move in and take control.

  17. Israeli government to recruit students as undercover agents on social media

    RT | August 15, 2013

Israel is set to recruit students to work undercover in “covert units” at universities.
The students will post messages on the Israeli government’s behalf – without identifying themselves as government agents.

The students participating in the project will be part of the public diplomacy arm of Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu’s office. Leaders of the “covert units” will receive full scholarships in return for their online public diplomacy (hasbara).

The Prime Minister’s Office is looking to invest up to 3 million shekels ($840,000) to recruit, organize and fund the activities of hundreds of university students, Haaretz reported.

Sources in the Prime Minister’s Office told the newspaper that the main subjects that the campus-based units will deal with are diplomatic- and security-related issues, efforts to combat boycotts of Israel, anti-Semitism and the de-legitimization of Israel. The students will focus on Israel’s democratic values, freedom of religion, pluralism and ...
“other subjects that give expression to the Israeli government’s public diplomacy policy.”

A member of the Israeli Knesset, Dov Lipman, and the Prime Minister’s Office’s director for interactive media, Danny Seaman, revealed the new initiative during a meeting of the Knesset’s Diaspora Affairs Committee last month.

The Prime Minister’s Office is planning to have Israel’s student union recruit up to 550 students with knowledge of foreign languages from Israel’s seven universities. The student union is to publicize the project among tens of thousands of students, and is to provide computers and work space for a project headquarters at all university campuses.

“With social media, you can’t wait,” an unnamed official involved in the effort told the Jerusalem Post.

“We will get authoritative information out and make sure it goes viral,” the official said.
“We won’t leave negative stories out there online without a response, and we will spread positive messages.
What we are doing is revolutionary. We are putting public diplomacy in the hands of the public.”

The covert units will be set up at each university and structured in a semi-military fashion.
While groups will take directions from staff at the Prime Minister’s Office, the government says that officially they will be politically independent.

“The idea requires that the state’s role not be highlighted and therefore it is necessary to insist on major involvement by the students themselves without any political link [or] affiliation,” Seaman said.

Leaders of covert units will receive full scholarships from the Prime Minister’s Office, which will fund a total of 2.78 million shekels ($780,000) in scholarships for the program in the upcoming academic year, Haaretz reported.

    1. “The national public diplomacy unit in the PMO places an emphasis on social network activity,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.
“As part of this, a new pro-Israel public diplomacy infrastructure of students on Israeli campuses is being established that will assist in advancing and disseminating content on the social networks, particularly to international audiences.”

According to details provided to Israeli media, a government liaison officer for Israel advocacy will oversee the dissemination of “rapid responses” from Israeli officials to respond to news events, and coordinate with other government bodies that deal with public diplomacy, including the Israeli Defense Force.

The IDF has recently asserted a stronger, at times controversial presence on social media with mixed results.
The new program may well seek to address perceived deficiencies in the way that Israel communicates with the world online.

Last year, during Israel’s eight-day Operation Pillar of Defense, an incursion launched into the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip in response to rocket attacks, the Palestinian group was widely seen as having won the war of words on online media.

Haaretz reported that in the fallout of the military operation, the hashtag #GazaUnderAttack with 170,000 mentions easily surpassed Israel’s own #IsraelUnderFire, with a comparably meager 25,000 mentions.

“The perception dominating the online discourse was that the IDF had embarked on an unjustified attack,” said Tomer Simon, an Israeli researcher who studied social networking activity during the conflict.

  24. Israeli students to get $2,000 to spread state

The National Union of Israeli Students (NUIS) has become a full-time partner in the Israeli government’s efforts to spread its propaganda online and on college campuses around the world.

NUIS has launched a program to pay Israeli university students $2,000 to spread pro-Israel propaganda online for 5 hours per week from the “comfort of home.”

The union is also partnering with Israel’s Jewish Agency to send Israeli students as missionaries to spread propaganda in other countries, for which they will also receive a stipend.

    The NUIS program document explains:

After training, the student will begin his activities. The student will do the activities in the comfort of his home, where every week he will be obligated to about 5 hours of activities for a period of one calendar year (not academic year). Students will be paid a total of NIS 7,500 [$2,000] to perform the tasks of the project, at least 5 hours weekly for a total of 240 hours of activities under the project umbrella.

What is completely missing from the program is any indication that criticism of Israel could be valid. Rather the National Union of Israeli Students apparently seeks to indoctrinate Israeli students that every criticism of Israel is “hate” and “anti-Semitism” and that the Internet should be seen as a battlefield on which they are foot soldiers.

Most of Latin America— Chile being a conspicuous exception—exemplifies that situation.

That protection in turn made it possible for them to invest and take risks.
More generally, the stronger the set of property rights, the stronger the incentive to work, save, and invest, ...

Thus, while it is clear that democracy must guarantee the expression of the popular will through majority rule, ...
... it is equally clear that it must guarantee that the majority will not abuse use its power ...
... to violate the basic and inalienable rights of the minority.

For one, a defining characteristic of democracy must be the people's right to change the majority through elections.
This right is the people's "supreme authority."

The minority, therefore, must have the right to seek to become the majority ...
... and possess all the rights necessary to compete fairly in elections—speech, assembly, association, petition ...
... since otherwise the majority would make itself permanent and become a dictatorship.

For the majority, ensuring the minority's rights becomes a matter of self-interest, ...
... since it must utilize the same rights when it is in minority to seek to become a majority again.

      There were no pre-1967 borders!

Rather than accept UN's provisional borders, the Arabs attempted to annihilate the Jews in 1948-49. Finding themselves losing, the Arabs asked for an armistice; Israel obliged. Egypt accepted a peace treaty evntually, but the other Arab belligerents have not, some 65 years later. Since the Arabs will not treat, the UN has officially designated certain territories as "disputed". That is how it will stay until the Arabs decide to behave themselves.

    8. Perhaps it is strange for you to observe the situation in Palestine or more specifically, the structure of political and cultural relationships between Palestinians and Israelis, as an Apartheid system. This is because you incorrectly think that the problem of Palestine began in 1967. This was demonstrated in your recent column “Bush’s First Memo” in the New York Times on March 27, 2001.

You seem to be surprised to hear that there are still problems of 1948 to be solved, ...
the most important component of which is the right to return of Palestinian refugees.

The Palestinian-Israeli conflict is not just an issue of military occupation ...
and Israel is not a country that was established “normally” ...
and happened to occupy another country in 1967.

Palestinians are not struggling for a “state” but for freedom, liberation and equality, ...
just like we were struggling for freedom in South Africa.

Israel’s racial discrimination is daily life of most Palestinians.
Since Israel is a Jewish state, Israeli Jews are able to accrue special rights which non-Jews cannot do.
Palestinian Arabs have no place in a “Jewish” state.

Apartheid is a crime against humanity. Israel has deprived millions of Palestinians of their liberty and property.

It has perpetuated a system of gross racial discrimination and inequality.
It has systematically incarcerated and tortured thousands of Palestinians, contrary to the rules of international law.

It has, in particular, waged a war against a civilian population, in particular children.

The girls and he, combined to create a Zone of Silence about the assault.

Saying he had only been concerned with appearances, his daughter's reputation not her or their family friends and neighbor's safety, not his community's security.

After she had been raped, after the news leaked out of Fudd's butt, there were suspicions in the community that the assault may well have been a "family affair".

      Sacrifice of Isaac, by Caravaggio
As had been prophesied in Mamre the previous year (Genesis 17:21), Sarah became pregnant and bare a son to Abraham, on the first anniversary of the covenant of circumcision. Abraham was "an hundred years old", when his son whom he named Isaac was born; and he circumcised him when he was eight days old. (Genesis 21:1–5) For Sarah, the thought of giving birth and nursing a child, at such an old age, also brought her much laughter, as she declared, "God hath made me to laugh, so that all that hear will laugh with me." (Genesis 21:6–7) Isaac continued to grow and on the day he was weaned, Abraham held a great feast to honor the occasion. During the celebration, however, Sarah found Ishmael mocking; an observation that would begin to clarify the birthright of Isaac. (Genesis 21:8-13)

      Yep... Isaac got the inheritance.

  41. Recent talk that the debt ceiling fiasco will prompt the Chinese authorities to pull the plug on its vast holdings of U.S. Treasuries is deeply misguided. China lends to the United States by buying Treasuries because it has few other options, not as some kind of favor. Sure, the Chinese are not happy at the shambles in Congress, but that does not mean they are about to sell their $1.3 trillion-worth of Treasuries or even slow down their rate of purchases. And here’s why:

First, China runs a huge trade surplus with the United States. In the year to July, the U.S. was a net importer of goods worth $319B from China; the deficit has tripled over the past decade. American companies, for the most part, have to pay for their Chinese imports in Chinese currency, just as Chinese companies buying from the U.S. need to pay in dollars.

The dollars spent purchasing Renminbi end up in the hands of the People’s Bank of China —the sole net supplier of Chinese currency—where they add to the pile of foreign exchange reserves. China’s reserves have now reached the equivalent of $3.7 trillion, well over half of which is in the form of dollars, and they have to be held somewhere, in some form. The People’s Bank could maintain a gigantic pile of dollar bills, with smaller heaps of euros and other currencies, but they would earn no interest. Reserves have to pay their way.

This brings us to the second key point, which is that the idea China could sell a substantial part of its dollar holdings for euros makes little sense. This action would represent foreign exchange intervention on a massive scale, and the result would be huge drop in the value of the dollar. The renminbi value of the PBOC’s dollar assets would therefore plunge, imposing a gigantic capital loss. The PBOC is not in the business of throwing money away.

Even if China were willing to take a loss on its dollar holdings, would it really want to hold more euros? China runs a huge trade surplus against the Eurozone too—$117B in the year to August—so it already has an big pile of euro assets. The value of those assets is clear today, but China plays a very long game, in which stability is prized above almost all else. The eurozone remains unstable, despite better recent short-term data, and it is not certain that the euro will exist in its current form in five or ten years’ time. The dollar will, and that matters.

Third, once you accept the idea that China’s dollar earnings mostly have to stay as dollars, it is clear that there are no alternatives to owning U.S. securities, government and private. There no other safe, liquid investments available in the necessary quantities. At the margin, China’s sovereign wealth fund can buy equities and real assets like property, but the bulk of the overall portfolio has to be held in liquid securities. These are foreign exchange reserves, remember, not some pot of spare money to be gambled away.

Fourth, China knows the U.S. is not going to default. The Tea Party is not going to run the country; with the support of only about one in five Americans it cannot win national elections. Outside its southern heartlands it does not have the entire Republican party in its grip, so the default-would-be-OK crowd will not take control. You can expect to hear more whining from both official sources and the Chinese media, but the bottom line is that China’s purchases of Treasuries are just one part of a two-way relationship from which both countries benefit enormously.

Finally, it is easy to forget that the U.S. budget deficit is shrinking very rapidly. In the current financial year, I expect it to be less than 3% of GDP, and it will likely be less than 2% of GDP in 2015. Deficits on this small scale will be dwarfed by domestic savings, so the U.S. won’t need China. But China will be there anyway.

  45. Rather than trying to fix all these problems, I think they might be best off to scrap the whole mess and start from scratch.

Best of all would be to just scrap OCare.

I'm tempted to try and sign up myself, just to see what happens. I think Idaho is running its own program but haven't cared to follow it closely. Could always drive to Spokane and try from there. Might be interesting.

  46. I am going to write up a basic generic Whacking of Doodle, and just use that each time he mentions my name.

This will serve me two advantages -

    1) Saves time and effort
    2) Won't have to read the Doodle anymore, just look for reference to myself.

    1. Who ever mentions Anonymous?

    2. Why would anyone mention Anonymous?

He ain't nobody, nobody at all. Good golly molly, even Farmer Fudd, the fascist that Desert Rat rages on about, is mentioned by the other contributors. No one ever brings up any of the writing by Anonymous. No none follows those topics, no one replies but to lay clear the errors in fact or perspective in the Anonymous missives. No one speaks ill of Anonymous, it is like he did not even exist.

Anonymous has no character. He never developed one.
Even Mr Wind Riffle is further developed, in character and virtue, than Anonymous.

By the very nature of Anonymous, he is anonymous. Lost and alone, the man without a face, a memory or even a soul.
An empty vessel is all an Anonymous can hope to be. Just the Nature of the Beast that the anonymous poster chooses to be.

Like the "Unknown Comic" from the "Gong Show", the fellow with a bag on his head.
      That's our Anonymous.

  48. The name of that eminent domain case I couldn't recall earlier was the Kelo case.

"The threat to property rights is not confined to behemoth government; it is very real at the local government level as well. From the abuse of eminent domain typified in the Kelo case to abusing land use or zoning laws, local governments have become a dangerous threat to property rights.
This vast local power over property rights has not been lost on the anti-property rights crowd, who believe that your property rights actually belong to the community.

When Virginia's Fauquier County cited farmer Martha Boneta last year for hosting a birthday party for eight 10-year-old girls because she did not have a permit and site plan, little did county officials think they would set off a revolution for legal remedies against such abuses.
The "Boneta Bill" introduced in the Virginia General Assembly last session provided remedies against county governments and county officials who violate rights of farmers, or otherwise abuse the law. Farmers could proactively institute lawsuits for damages, including their legal fees, against law-violating bureaucrats."

    1. One legal standard for the United States, another for Israel...

The Farmer Fudd proves he is a fascist, a man that supports the theft of land from Palestinians-
      - but objects when the same is done to Americans.

To know what people really think, pay regard to what they do, rather than what they say.

    2. Try more Santayana in the right spirit. I cannot steal what does not belong to you. Go to a mirror, look deeply into it, and say, "Long live Israel!"
