COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

John Kerry reminded us that France was our “oldest ally”. Now French lawmakers are being presented evidence of the Syrian chemical attack. What happens if they are unconvinced?

France lawmakers 'to see proof Syria regime behind attack'

France will hand over evidence to lawmakers on Monday proving President Bashar al-Assad's regime was behind the August 21 chemical weapons attack in Syria, a government source told AFP.

AFP - France will hand over evidence to lawmakers on Monday proving President Bashar al-Assad's regime was behind the August 21 chemical weapons attack in Syria, a government source told AFP.
It will be a set of evidence of different kinds that will allow the regime to be clearly identified as responsible for the August 21 chemical attack, the source said.

Conflating the issue of going to Congress with the issue of going to the UN are two different issues,

as for the UN issue? Stating that all military strikes must have a UN resolution is in fact a violation of the UN charter.

AND there is the point that the UN is a biased, bigoted agency today.

  3. Who makes more sense, Phillis Bennis or John McCain?

    Obama turns to McCain

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is inviting former foe Sen. John McCain to the White House, hoping one of Congress’ most intractable foreign policy hawks will help sell the idea of a U.S. military intervention in Syria to a nation deeply scarred by more than a decade of war.

Having announced over the weekend that he'll seek congressional approval for military strikes against the Assad regime, the Obama administration is now trying to rally support among Americans and their congressman and senators.

Monday’s meeting with McCain is meant to address concerns of those who feel Obama isn’t doing enough to punish Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government for an attack in the Damascus suburbs last month that the U.S. says included sarin gas and killed at least 1,429 civilians, more than 400 of whom were children. On the other side of the spectrum, some Republican and Democratic lawmakers don’t want to see military action at all.

Obama’s turnabout on Syria sets the stage for the biggest foreign policy vote in Congress since the Iraq war.

The US National Security Agency (NSA) spied on the internal communications of France’s foreign ministry and diplomats, as well as those of the Qatar-based television station Al-Jazeera, a German magazine said Sunday.

    By News Wires

The US National Security Agency (NSA) spied on the internal communications of France's foreign ministry and diplomats and those of Qatar-based television station Al-Jazeera, a German magazine said Sunday.

Der Spiegel reported that in 2010 the NSA monitored the internal computer network of France's diplomats and that of the ministry itself by accessing so-called virtual private networks (VPN), a tool that generally offers a secure internet connection to users.

The "top secret" NSA document seen by the magazine and dated June 2010 said French diplomatic offices in New York and Washington had bugs installed on the premises and that screenshots were taken from computer monitors in United Nations offices.

The NSA was "interested in (France's) foreign policy objectives, especially the weapons trade, and economic stability," the magazine said.

Der Spiegel had already revealed the NSA monitored internal UN computer systems in the summer of 2012 after viewing classified documents via Edward Snowden, the former intelligence analyst turned leaker to the media.

Sunday's revelations are also believed to originate from Snowden.

  20. NICK GILLESPIE, REASON: Let’s be blunt, I’m friendly with Bill Kristol. He's no Winston Churchill, he has zero wins in his column. When I think of the foreign policy mastery which comes out of The Weekly Standard, which was an instrumental mouthpiece for the Bush administration and before that they were calling for intervention throughout the Balkans -- I mean, they have never, in their short existence, they have never met a war that they didn’t like…

Bill Kristol has no credibility. You know, for all of his plaudits and things like that, he has no credibility on foreign policy. Every decision that he has pushed and urged on America -- including before 9/11, to start getting really antagonistic militarily with China -- has been wrong. And it's about time that we stop paying that much attention to a kind of perspective on military action that coming out of The Weekly Standard.

HOST: Charles Krauthammer saying that the president and White House, it's amateur hour with this announcement yesterday.

GILLESPIE: You know, again, I'm not sure what Charles Krauthammer can point to, to say, 'Look, I said should we should go into Iraq, that's a great thing, and we should go into Afghanistan and that's a great thing.' You know, war -- people who are interested in going to war are always in favor of war, and then they always criticize when war doesn't go well.

The fact of the matter is, is we need a better understanding of what went wrong in Iraq in two ways. One was clearly the actual administration of the occupation was completely disastrous and that was truly amateur hour under the Bush administration. But then also the conception of actually even going into Iraq and going into Afghanistan in a way where we went with the Pottery Barn kind of method, that if we broke it, we had to rebuild it. You know, tees are people who I'm afraid simply, you know, pundits every once in awhile should be held accountable for their past recommendations and these guys have a track record that is just God-awful. 23. The NSA is the gift that keeps on giving

A German magazine has said that the NSA spied on the electronic communications of the French foreign ministry. This comes as France looks to be the most likely ally to join the US in a military strike against Syria.

A report published on the website of the German news magazine the Spiegel says the United States' National Security Agency (NSA) tapped into computers used by French diplomats to communicate with each other and the foreign ministry in Paris through virtual private networks (VPN).
VPN internet connections are generally considered to offer a high level of security.

The magazine report cites an NSA document dated June 2010, which said the agency had managed to place bugs in French diplomatic missions in both New York and Washington. It described this as a "success story" and said it had achieved "sensitive access" in a number of cases.
It also said the NSA was particularly "interested in foreign policy objectives, especially the weapons trade, and economic stability" of France.
It wasn't clear whether the source of the information was former NSA subcontractor Edward Snowden, who is being sought by American authorities for releasing troves of secret documents from the intelligence agency. Snowden has been granted temporary asylum in Russia.

    Fresh tensions?

Previous reports of the NSA's alleged surveillance activities have created tensions between the US and its European allies.
"We cannot accept this kind of behavior between partners and allies," French President Francois Hollande said back in July in response to a report that suggested the NSA was spying on European Union governments. He also went as far as to threaten to suspend negotiations between the EU and Washington towards a trans-Atlantic free trade agreement.

Earlier this week, the Paris prosecutors’ office announced that it had launched a preliminary investigation into the NSA's Prism surveillance program, following a complaint by French rights groups in July.

The rights groups filed the complaint against “persons unknown," but listed US-based corporations Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, Facebook and Apple as "potential accomplices" of the NSA.

Ironically, the Spiegel report comes at a time when France appears to be the most likely European ally to join the United States in any punitive action against the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad over last month’s alleged chemical weapons attack.

President Hollande has said he backs US President Barack Obama's decision to launch military action. The National Assembly is to debate what to do about Syria on Wednesday, but France’s constitution only requires the president to seek parliamentary approval for launching military action if it lasts longer than four months.

There was no immediate reaction from the French government to the latest Spiegel report.

Robert Levinson went missing from Kish Island, Iran in March 2007 and is believed to be held captive somewhere in Iran. The Iranian government denies any involvement in Levinson’s capture or detainment.

It was only after it became clear to Obama that he could not win acceptance in other, preferred, circles that he chose to go to Congress. Would he have sought congressional authorization if he had won United Nations approval for a Syrian attack? Highly unlikely. Would he have sought congressional authorization if the British Parliament had voted to join Obama’s action? Also unlikely. Even approval from the Arab League might have been enough for Obama to act.

As it turned out, Obama achieved none of those goals and decided to seek congressional approval only after failing to win the international acceptance that apparently ranked higher on his list

  34. Sarah is Sarah

    By Jessica Chasmar
The Washington Times Sunday, September 1, 2013

In a Facebook post titled “Let Allah Sort It Out,” former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin condemned President Obama’s decision to get further involved with the ongoing civil war in Syria.

“So we’re bombing Syria because Syria is bombing Syria? And I’m the idiot?” Mrs. Palin asked on Friday. “President Obama wants America involved in Syria’s civil war pitting the antagonistic Assad regime against equally antagonistic Al Qaeda affiliated rebels. But he’s not quite sure which side is doing what, what the ultimate end game is, or even whose side we should be on.”

Mrs. Palin, the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee, argued that though Americans sympathize with the plight of innocent civilians in the war-torn country, the United States has “no clear mission in Syria,” and the president’s advertised war plan “has given Assad enough of a heads-up that he’s reportedly already placing human shields at targeted sites.”

“Our Nobel Peace Prize winning President needs to seek Congressional approval before taking us to war,” she added.

  35. Phyllis Bennis thinks a totalitarian regime can be dissuaded from slaughtering its own people by mere words.

Had the Russians and the Chinese not vetoed comprehensive sanctions against Syria repeatedly, we would not have had to contemplate the use of military force to avert an even greater tragedy.

Place the blame where it rightly belongs – with the backers of the Assad dictatorship. I don’t like war. But sometimes you need to counter an evil before it leads to more loss of human life.

If 100,000 dead isn’t enough to get the Western Left to stand up and call for vigorous measures against a genocidal regime, what would be the point when they would say enough?

Men, women and children are being killed daily and the Western Left doesn’t want to hold a murderous dictatorship accountable. That says it all.

  36. You miss the point. The 100,000 dead are from many factions. There are no good guys in this fight. If you are against Assad and for the opposition, you are with Al Qaeda.

“Vigorous measures” is another term for killing. There is no indication of genocide by the Syrian government. There is what appears to our eyes as being a ruthless pursuit of beating down internal threats to stability. In retrospect, as loathsome as it seems to you, it seems that it was necessary, in Iraq, Egypt, Libya and Syria.

It is clearly practiced in Saudi Arabia. The one country in the ME that could have had a sixty year experience with democracy, but the US government and the CIA made sure that did not happen.

In area, it is the largest city in Kings County. The Zip Code for this community is 93204, and telephone numbers use the sequence (559) 386-XXXX. The population was 15,505 in the 2010 census, which includes inmates at the Avenal State Prison, the first prison actively solicited by a community in the state of California. Many of the remaining residents largely either work at the prison or in the agriculture industry. The prison provides approximately 1,000 jobs to residents. The California Department of Finance estimated that Avenal's population was 14,225 on January 1, 2013.[4] As of that date, Avenal State Prison held 4,973 inmates, which was about 35% of the total population of Avenal.[5] Inmates are counted as city residents by both the United States Census and the California Department of Finance.

Egypt Destroys Homes for Possible Gaza Buffer Zone
    CAIRO September 1, 2013 (AP)

Egypt's military has bulldozed 13 homes along the Gaza Strip border and caved in tunnels beneath them as a prelude to the possible creation of a buffer zone to reduce weapon smuggling and illegal militant crossings, angering residents who said they were evicted with no compensation, security officials and residents said Sunday.

The military envisions creating a building-free zone with no trees 500 meters (1,640 feet) wide and 10 kilometers (6 miles) long starting at the Rafah border crossing and ending at the Mediterranean Sea, Northern Sinai government officials said. The homes were knocked down over the last 10 days as a test of the buffer zone idea in an area called el-Sarsoriya, a few kilometers (miles) from the Rafah crossing, while explosives were used to collapse the tunnels. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

  42. Iraqi Government Rejects US Strike on Syria, Fears Civil War

Posted on 09/02/2013 by Juan Cole

In his speech on Saturday on the Syria crisis, President Obama instanced Iraq among the countries that might suffer if the Baath regime were allowed to get away with using chemical weapons.

The elected government of Iraq, however, says thanks but no thanks. Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki categorically rejects a Western strike on Syria. Sectarian struggles lie behind this reaction.

The Iraqi government has announced that it won’t permit the US to fly over Iraqi territory in the course of any operation against Syria.

Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, of the Shiite ‘Islamic Call’ party, has forcefully rejected any outside attack on Syria. His government is said to fear that a US strike on Syria will produce social “chaos” that stretches from the Sunni areas in Syria into Anbar province (with its Sunni majority).

Iraqi foreign minister Hoshyar Zebari admitted that Iraq was unable to stop the weapons flow from Iran to Syria.

Muqtada al-Sadr, the leader of the hard line Sadr II bloc among Shiites, completely rejected any Western strike on Syria. Unlike most Iraqi Shiites, al-Sadr supports the Syrian revolution and says Syria should have free and fair elections so as to create a truly representative government. But al-Sadr reminded Syrians of the disasters visited on Iraq by sectarian faction-fighting and by American military occupation, and urged them to avoid both. Al-Sadr called for the Iraqis peacefully to demonstrate against any prospect of a US strike on Syria.

The radical Shiite group Asa’ib ahl al-Haqq threatened retaliation against any US strike.

In contrast, the Iraqiya Party that represents most Iraqi Sunnis is in favor of US military intervention against Syria.

  52. Rufie's Environmental Valhalla

California Republicans were flattened in last year’s elections, but this week they got off the ground and won a key special election for the state senate in a strongly Democratic area which is 60 percent Hispanic.

Andy Vidak, a 47-year-old cherry farmer, won 54 percent of the vote in a sprawling district that stretches from Fresno to Bakersfield and is home to some 1 million people. Democrats hold a 22-point voter-registration advantage in the district, and Barack Obama carried it by 59 percent to 39 percent in 2008 against John McCain. It’s the area of California where NRO contributor Victor Davis Hanson has his ranch.

Vidak’s major issue was ending environmental rules that have choked off water allocations to Central Valley farmers. This year farmers south of the delta will receive only 20 percent of their contracted allocations. Smelt apparently need protection from the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta water pumps. Rather than deal with the wastewater from urban areas which are smelt’s biggest enemy, state officials are closing the spigot on the farms. Vidak summarizes the issue as being “fish versus farmer,” and liberals are enamored with the fish.

Leticia Perez, a county supervisor from Bakersfield, was Vidak’s Democratic opponent. Her issues were raising California’s minimum wage by $1.25 an hour and backing a bullet train from the Bay Area to Los Angeles as a job-creation program. Vidak scoffed that the train was a boondoggle. ”We don’t have clean drinking water in some areas of our district,” he told the Wall Street Journal. “And they want to build an $80 billion bullet train!”

Jim Brulte, a former leader of California state senate Republicans and the party’s state chairman, is cheered by the news of Vidak’s victory. While the issues he won on were local, environmental extremism may become a statewide issue next year as a renewable-energy mandate, cap and trade, and a low-carbon fuel standard are fully implemented. “As the issues liberals push hardest start hurting Californians, we will have opportunities to win,” he told me earlier this year.

Ethanol Subsidies Backfire As Farm Bill Looms

“A production mandate and an import tariff, combined with agricultural subsidies that increase as agribusinesses engage in riskier production practices and convert more land to corn, has resulted in higher costs for consumers, taxpayers and other industries.

“While ethanol proponents such as the National Corn Growers Association promised several years ago that corn yields would keep up with the additional corn required for ethanol production, they failed to meet expectations. In fact, while corn ethanol production increased nearly eight-fold over the past decade, yields failed to keep up since corn production only increased by 25 percent, mainly due to an increase in corn acreage.”

The farm bill moving through Congress plows the same old ground, while boosting subsidies for sugar – another ethanol source – as well as dubious government-backed crop insurance programs.

“The subsidies encourage farmers to obtain so much coverage that they take risks no prudent operator would take. They plant on unsuitable land, knowing that if a crop fails, they can make a claim. They usually plant corn, the nation’s No. 1 cash crop, which is in demand partly from companies that brew it into ethanol fuel — an industry that owes its existence to more government subsidies,” according to the Chicago Tribune .

Never did hit that jackpot though.

Also if there is ten or fifteen percent of the crop left you can glean that and make a little, plus you can just cultivate the hailed seeds in and you are planted for next year.

    3. Naw, just a year thing. Just cultivate it in lightly.

Downside is it might be a little heavily seeded, but I've seen it done.

Actually I don't think you even have to cultivate it in, just let it volunteer and you've got the makings of a crop.

    4. Has to be a fall seeded crop though, like winter wheat or winter peas.

A spring seeded crop - no workee.

      Winter kill over the winter.

"Never spray your domestic oats with wild oat killer"

      That no workee either.
