COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

"It's the worst hell," Hemingway said. "The goddamnedest hell. They've bugged everything. That's why we're using Duke's car. Mine's bugged. Everything's bugged. Can't use the phone. Mail intercepted."

U.S. Government Launches Massive Surveillance Database

A recently discovered initiative by the National Counterterrorism Center will search millions of America's government files for criminal wrongdoing--even if they aren't under investigation.

The U.S. government has quietly launched a massive master database on American citizens, most of whom have no criminal records. According to the Wall Street Journal's Julia Angwin, a little-known government organization called the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) has begun to examine the government files of U.S. citizens for possible wrongdoing. Angwin claims the NCTC is searching disparate government databases for proof of possible criminal behavior by ordinary citizens, even if they are not suspected in any crimes. Despite the NCTC's name, the organization is searching for proof of ordinary crimes, as well as terrorism.
Lists being parsed by the NCTC include flight records, casino employee lists, and the names of Americans hosting foreign exchange students. All-seeing government databases are becoming an increasingly common part of everyday life; in recent months, New York's police department created a massive citywide surveillance system and the FBI announced a billion-dollar biometric database.

Ernest Hemingway 'driven to suicide over FBI surveillance'

By Jon Swaine, New York

7:56PM BST 03 Jul 2011

Ernest Hemingway may have been driven to kill himself because of his surveillance by the FBI, his close friend and collaborator has said.

AE Hotchner said he believed the FBI's monitoring of the Nobel Prize-winning author, over suspicions of his links to Cuba, "substantially contributed to his anguish and his suicide" 50 years ago.

Hotchner wrote in The New York Times that he had "regretfully misjudged" his friend's fears of federal investigators, which were dismissed as paranoid delusions for years after his death.

In 1983 the FBI released a 127-page file it had kept on Hemingway since the 1940s, confirming he was watched by agents working for J. Edgar Hoover, who took a personal interest in his case.

Hotchner described being met off a train by Hemingway in Ketchum, Idaho, in November 1960, for a pheasant shoot with their friend Duke MacMullen.
Hemingway, struggling to complete his last work, complained "the feds" had "tailed us all the way" and that agents were poring over his accounts in a local bank that they passed on their journey.

"It's the worst hell," Hemingway said. "The goddamnedest hell. They've bugged everything. That's why we're using Duke's car. Mine's bugged. Everything's bugged. Can't use the phone. Mail intercepted."
Later that month he was committed for psychiatric care at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, where he received electric shock treatment. He attempted suicide several times before being released.

A few days after returning home to Ketchum, he shot himself in the head with his favourite shotgun aged 61.

"In the years since, I have tried to reconcile Ernest's fear of the FBI, which I regretfully misjudged, with the reality of the FBI file," wrote Hotchner, the author of 'Papa Hemingway'.

"I now believe he truly sensed the surveillance, and that it substantially contributed to his anguish and his suicide," he said.

    2. Firearms Stolen During Household Burglaries And Other Property Crimes, 2005-2010
      Lynn Langton

      November 8, 2012 NCJ 239436

Presents findings on the theft of firearms during household burglaries and other property crimes from 2005 through 2010. The report examines the number of property crime victimizations involving the theft of one or more firearms, the number of firearms stolen each year, and the characteristics of property crimes involving stolen firearms. It presents data by the amount of loss, the percentage reported to police, the percentage of items recovered, and the characteristics of households experiencing the theft. The report also presents trends from 1994 through 2010 on the number of victimizations involving firearm theft. Data are from the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), which collects information on nonfatal crimes, reported and not reported to the police, against persons age 12 or older from a nationally representative sample of U.S. households.

      Highlights:

About 1.4 million guns, or an annual average of 232,400, were stolen during burglaries and other property crimes in the six-year period from 2005 through 2010.
On average, firearms were stolen in an annual average of about 4% of the 2.4 million burglaries occurring each year, in 2% of the 529,200 robberies, and in less than 1% of the 13.6 million other crimes involving theft from 2005 through 2010.
From 2005 through 2010, 86% of burglaries and 75% of other property crimes involving a stolen firearm were reported to police.

Gun Ownership and Use in America
"Women more likely than men to use guns for protection
by Joseph Carroll, Gallup Poll Assistant Editor
How many Americans personally own guns, and what do they use them for? A recent Gallup Poll* shows that 3 in 10 Americans personally own a gun; most gun owners say they use their guns to protect themselves against crime, for hunting, and for target shooting. Gun ownership varies by different groups in the country, with men more likely to be gun owners than women, Southerners and Midwesterners more likely than Easterners or Westerners, Republicans more so than Democrats, and older rather than younger Americans.

      Gun Ownership

The poll, conducted Oct. 13-16, finds that 4 in 10 Americans report they have a gun in their homes, including 30% who say they personally own a gun and 12% who say another member of their household owns it. These results show essentially no change since this question was last asked in 2000. At that time, 27% of Americans said they personally owned a gun and 14% said another household member owned one."

The 2005 nationwide Gallup poll of 1,012 adults found the following levels of firearm ownership:

      Category Percentage Owning a Firearm
      Households 42%
      Individuals 30%
      Male 47%
      Female 13%
      White 33%
      Nonwhite 18%
      Republican 41%
      Independent 27%
      Democrat 23%

      * In the same poll, gun owners stated they own firearms for the following reasons:

      Protection Against Crime 67%
      Target Shooting 66%
      Hunting 41%

    4. So, out of 300,000,000 Firearms, we could assume that maybe 10,000,000 are on the street illegally as a result of theft?

Which brings us to traffic cameras. The Brits have the right idea. Every street corner (and, a lot of other places the bad guys won't think to look, or couldn't see if they were looking.)

Our cameras should be tracking the vehicle of the offenders within seconds (milliseconds) of any armed robbery, anywhere. Along with the facial identification of the robbers.

This is very doable. You don't believe it? Get identified as a "card-counter" by a casino. Any casino. Anywhere in the world.

Yes, but a Casino is a private enterprise, not a government.
In Los Angeles, regulations increasingly rule out legitimate businesses, while turning a blind eye on illegals who then make a killing, since they are burdened by no regulations whatsoever.

Carolla's example is all the unsafe, illegal, non-health law conforming Taco Wagons plying the streets, while legitimate operations are run out of business by unworkable over-regulation.

  9. Ernest Hemingway suffered from a genetic condition (hemachromatosis(sp?) that affects the iron content of the blood, and leads to depression, and mental illness. Just about his entire family on his father's side died from suicide. All those shock treatments probably didn't help.

We're not, yet, properly using the technology available to us. Facial recognition software should have picked up Adam Lanza when he attempted to gain entry at the front entrance. He should have been in a database, and the perimeter should have been secure.

That's nonsense about Hem. The part about being driven over the edge by the FBI. Like Rufus says, he may suffered from some stuff I listened to his son explain it one time. He was manic/depressive all his life. Could get really high about a subject or activity, then also really low. At the end of his life his writing skills were leaving him, he went way low, and, like his son said, it finally 'got him'.

He was also suffering from some effects of a head banging in Africa, and the years of boozing...

He was investigated however, for his political views. He was not a commie, or a commie sympathizer, though he had supported the Republic in the Spanish Civil War, which was made up of various parties. He was anti-fascist, anti-nazis.

Further, any sane man, after reading a little history, would be extremely fearful of communists, they have killed enough megamillions to warrant it. And the writer of Barky's book had once recommended to kill thirty million of us to get us straight with Marx, Lenin and the boys.

What? Even Grover Norquist blessed Boehner's proposal, saying it wasn't really a tax increase. Even Paul Ryan supported it.

What does Boehner's failure tell us about the modern Republican party?

That it has become a party of hypocrisy masquerading as principled ideology. The GOP talks endlessly about the importance of reducing the budget deficit. But it isn't even willing to raise revenues from the richest three-tenths of one percent of Americans to help with the task. We're talking about 400,000 people, for crying out loud.

It has become a party that routinely shills for its super-wealthy patrons at a time in our nation's history when the middle class is shrinking, the median wage is dropping, and the share of Americans in poverty is rising.

It has become a party of spineless legislators more afraid of facing primary challenges from right-wing kooks than of standing up for what's right for America.

For all these reasons it has become irrelevant to . . . .

What do you possibly mean, Rufus doesn't believe in God? Both my friend from Arizona and Rufus obviously do.

      ....

Ex nihilo is a Latin phrase meaning "out of nothing". It often appears in conjunction with the concept of creation, as in creatio ex nihilo, meaning "creation out of nothing"—chiefly in philosophical or theological contexts, but also occurs in other fields.

In theology, the common phrase creatio ex nihilo ("creation out of nothing"), contrasts with creatio ex materia (creation out of some pre-existent, eternal matter) and with creatio ex deo (creation out of the being of God).

Here is a difference between east and west. Tat tvan asi -thou art that -in the east.

A good image is, the spider spinning its web. The spider and the web are quite different, yet the web is made of spider stuff in the east. In the west the spider and its web are entirely different. Not spider stuff. Totally other. A great unbridgeable gulf looms between Creator and Creation there. Created only in the image of God not out of God stuff.

    3. "...s curious man,
Half monk and half racecourse operator.
      "

      - Aldous Huxley

      Allen Watts

Watts was born in 1915 in Chislehurst, Kent. His father had been a sales rep for the Michelin tyre company and his mother was a housewife whose father had been a missionary. In later life, Watts wrote of mystical visions he’d had after suffering fever as a child. During school holidays — while he was a scholar at King’s School in Cambridge — he went on trips with the Buddhism enthusiast Francis Croshaw, who first developed his interest in Eastern religion.

With penetrating eyes like Aleister Crowley’s, he described himself as a ‘spiritual entertainer’

By the age of 16, Watts was the secretary of the London Buddhist Lodge, which was run by the barrister Christmas Humphreys. But Watts spoiled his chances of a scholarship to Oxford because one examination essay was judged ‘presumptuous and capricious’. And, despite his obviously brilliant mind, Watts never achieved a British university degree. This, perhaps, is another of his qualities that chimes with my own spirit — I too left school with only two A-levels, and am, like Watts, an autodidact.

As a young man, Watts worked in a printing house and then a bank. During this time, he hooked up with the Serbian ‘rascal guru’ Dimitrije Mitrinović — a follower of the Armenian spiritual teacher GI Gurdjieff and the Russian esotericist PD Ouspensky — who became a major influence on his thinking.

At the age of 21, in 1936, he attended the World Congress of Faiths at the University of London. There, he heard the renowned Zen scholar DT Suzuki speak, and was introduced to him. Later that year, Watts published his first book The Spirit of Zen.

That same year, he met the American heiress Eleanor Everett, whose mother was involved with a traditional Zen Buddhist circle in New York. He married Eleanor in 1938 and they moved to America, where he trained as an Episcopal priest, before leaving the ministry in 1950, thus separating once and for all from his Christian roots. From then on he concentrated on the study and communication of Eastern philosophical ideas to Western audiences.

I felt powerfully attracted to Alan Watts. Not only to his ideas, but to him, personally. Watts was no dry, academic philosopher. With eyes hooded and penetrating like Aleister Crowley’s, he was a jester as well as a thinker, describing himself as a ‘spiritual entertainer’. Aldous Huxley described him as ‘a curious man. Half monk and half racecourse operator.’ Watts wholeheartedly agreed with Huxley’s characterisation. He carried a silver cane ‘for pure swank’, he hung out with Ken Kesey and Jack Kerouac (he is even parodied in On the Road as Arthur Whale). His English public school-educated voice was rich and deep, like a prophet’s, and his laugh juicy and contagious.

    5. In some ways, his interpretations were radical — for instance, he dismissed the core Zen idea of zazen (which meant spending hours seated in contemplative meditation) as unnecessary.

A cat sits until it is tired of sitting, then gets up, stretches, and walks away,’ was his forgiving interpretation of zazen.

Slightly less forgiving was his comment on Western Zen enthusiasts, whom he mocked as

‘The uptight school … who seem to believe that Zen is essentially sitting on your ass for interminable hours.’

It was a great relief to read this for someone like me, who found the idea of excessive meditation as unhealthy as the idea of excessive masturbation.

I once interrupted Garret Hardin's class on Human Evolution, after enduring some uptight British Chick drone on with:

"Cat's take more baths than people"

Garret was interested, but I don't remember making much of a logical connection to square the circle.
