COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Islamic Savagery - Public Whipping of Women

Teenager lashed 100 times in Timbuktu for having child out of wedlock

An 18-year-old pregnant woman and her boyfriend were both lashed 100 times by Islamists in Timbuktu in Mali as punishment for "having a child out of wedlock".

The sentence was carried out on the orders of Ansar Dine, a militant Muslim organisation that has seized territory in the desert north of the West African country.
"People were watching it was like a show," said Mohamed Ould Babby, a local official.
"I was there, I saw the youths arriving at the square, I saw them being whipped, it is the first time I have seen something like that." The woman, who was three months pregnant, has another child with her partner but the couple is not married.
According to Ansar Dine's strict interpretation of Islamic laws, that means the pair have committed the crime of "fornication", which is punishable with 100 lashes.
An Islamic police official in the town said six other women who had had children outside of marriage would soon be "punished by Islamic law”.
People living in Timbuktu, the ancient city in Mali's southern Sahara desert, have reported that the Islamists have ordered women to wear full veils, whipped smokers and destroyed shopkeepers' stocks of cigarettes.
Ansar Dine took control of northern Mali, with help from Tuareg rebels, when army officers mutinied in the capital, Bamako, and ousted the democratically-elected government.

  1. Why Eating Dirt is Good For Us

We scrub away germs to ensure good health, but in the long term, our "squeaky-clean" culture may be backfiring on us. Our immune systems developed to fend off a constant threat of invading organisms, learning to distinguish helpful and harmful invaders throughout life, writes Jeff Leach in the New York Times. Today, though, we deny our bodies the opportunity to grapple with those invaders, leading to a "minimally challenged and thus overreactive immune system." There's growing evidence that the phenomenon is contributing to ballooning allergies and autoimmune diseases.

If we faced some of our microbial "old friends" once again, research suggests it "would help avoid an overreaction of an otherwise healthy immune response," thus acting as a bulwark against diseases from Type I diabetes to allergies. "The too-shiny produce and triple-washed and bagged leafy greens in our local grocery aisle are hardly recognized by our immune system as food," Leach points out. It's just another reason to go to your local farmer's market, where you might get a little more dirt in your dinner. Click through for Leach's full piece.

  3. The digital revolution is about 20 to 25 years latter than expected (but this country has always had tunnel vision - no more.) The communications revolution will bring these kinds of behaviors to an abrupt end - in the historical time frame, but certainly not fast enough to save we don't yet know how many lives. People can not and will not live under such circumstances when the media images broadcast every minute of every day the contours of "a better life."

But the damn devil is in the damn details, more than ever. You and others here have a visceral dislike of Obama. I see him in more of the David Maraniss light (which I agree was sympathetic, if not explicitly insightful, and strikes me as more accurate than the beady-eyed Marxist intent on destroying western civilization) but, that doesn't immunize him against criticism as a political professional, and it doesn't excuse amateur hour in the DoJ courtesy of Holder. Games like the one he was apparently part of, if they were being run to destabilize cartel control of local Mexican governments as per the earlier suggestion, are too vulnerable to the inspired side deals that apparently took this one down. The last words you want to hear on border patrol are: Smile you're on Candide Camera Gringo.

    2. No argument there. But likely some disagreement on how this country got to where it is today - the first decade of the new century being brutal.

Here I will pretty much remain quiet as I have no insight, supplemental to what has already been opined by the analysts, but the one thing I reject, in its totality, is that the current state represents a failure of progressive thought/ideology and/or a resurgence of conservative thought/ideology (whatever that is in the post-Buckley world.)

Every generation demonstrates an enduring vulnerability to the idea that they are or will be grand and pivotal in some historic sense of milestone and mission-critical inflection points leading to any variety of alternative futures, if only, if only, if only.... The grandiosity is misplaced. We are not at an inflection point of history. We are in the throes of a severe correction due to old liabilities and weaknesses.

This has less to do with FDR and the rise of the welfare state than it does with a failure of political leadership. From what I read between the lines, the "national dialogue" has begun in earnest. Washingtonians have picked up on the subtext, knaves and fools alike.

I predict some will discover they're not as smart as they think, especially those predicting the demise of this country.

When i was a boy in the fifties, there were 2-3 billion people and most of the world still suffered from the aftermath of WWII. Now we have 6-7 billion and have everything from post colonialism to huge changes in medicine farming and technology. The changes are enormous and have been continuous.

Before WWII we hardly had an army and rapidly after WWII we dismantled the US war machine. By the time of the Korean war the US military was a shadow of its former self.

On my troop train to Biloxi Mississippi from Houston we stopped and changed trains in New Orleans. You had two sets of benches, two bathrooms and two sets of water fountains fro whites and colored.

Shortly after that Bull Connors shocked the nation. Kennedy was shot and the Cold War kicked into high gear. All of this had an effect on society and politics.

  8. Romney has another interesting problem; he wants to go into swing states like Florida, Virgina, and Ohio, and talk about how the economy is "bad, and getting worse."

However, those states have Republican Governors that want to talk about how much "Better" things are getting under their watch.

  9. This came to a head the other day when the Romney campaign contacted the Governor of Florida, and asked (told) him to "tone down the happy talk."

It is an all too frequent example, mostly evidenced throughout the ME and Africa, where religion is allowed to not only voice its opposition to the law but in fact to dictate the law.

Caning, pedophilia, execution by fundamentalists have all been condemned here before. And while you took the time to call out the bar on this subject, the only other opinion you offered was that the "poor women was being whipped half to death", something that is evident to anyone looking at the picture.

  12. If his mouth is moving, or his ghost writer is writing, the son of a bitch is lying -

    The Obama Record

The Obama Record: The most frightening aspect of this president may not be his radical ideology but his rank dishonesty in selling that ideology. Now he's been caught lying about family racism.

In "Dreams from My Father," his 1995 memoir, Obama used the story of his paternal grandfather's imprisonment and torture at the hands of British colonists in Kenya as an example of white cruelty. He claimed Hussein Onyango Obama was unjustly detained for six months before being released a crippled, lice-ridden "old man."

In fact, none of it is true, according to Washington Post editor and biographer David Maraniss, who traveled to Kenya to investigate the tale. His grandfather was not detained or beaten by his "white rulers," as Obama, writing as a 34-year-old lawyer, claimed.

This is only the latest example of a growing body of fabrications, embellishments and outright lies told by this president, who has a real and possibly pathological problem with the truth.

Stacked up, his whoppers would make even Bill Clinton blush. Here's a sampling:

Lie No. 1: Obama has repeatedly claimed his white grandfather, Stanley Dunham, "fought in Patton's army," when he was a clerk with no combat in WWII.

Lie No. 2: Obama claimed Dunham, a communist sympathizer, signed up for duty "the day after Pearl Harbor," when in fact he waited six months.
mp3Subscribe to the IBD Editorials Podcast

Lie No. 3: Obama claimed his father "fought when he got back to Kenya against tribalism and nepotism, but ultimately was blackballed from the government," when in fact he fought against capitalism and lost his job when he advocated communism.

Lie No. 4: Obama has claimed his late mother's health insurer refused "to pay for her treatment" for cancer while citing a "pre-existing condition," when Cigna paid all her hospital bills and never denied payment.

Lie No. 5: Obama claimed he and a black high school friend named "Ray" were ostracized in Honolulu, when in fact the friend, Keith Kakugawa, was half-Japanese, and neither of them experienced discrimination.

Lie No. 6: Obama claimed the father of his Indonesian stepfather was killed by Dutch soldiers while fighting for Indonesian independence, when in fact the story turns out to be "a concocted myth in almost all respects," Maraniss found.

Lie No. 7: Obama claimed his parents decided to marry in the excitement of the Selma civil-rights march of 1965 — and that he personally has "a claim on Selma" — when in fact they were married several years earlier.

  18. One hardly knows where to start: the history of Fast and Furious is in many ways a litany of disasters. Guns showed up where they were not supposed to be. A cache of more than 40 firearms sold through Lone Wolf Trading Company in Glendale, Arizona – an important outlet for Operation Fast and Furious – wound up in Texas in January 2010. In a separate incident, a gun runner was let off by the ATF so that he would lead them to higher-ups – a plan that was thwarted when ATF agents discovered too late that the men he led them to were already informants for the FBI. Kenneth E. Melson, then acting director of the ATF, announced in August 2011 that he was stepping down from his post as more details on Fast and Furious leaked out.

    Fast and Furious for Dummies

    Cowboys.

Though it is not clear exactly what these documents may involve, it seems likely that they consist of the Department of Justice’s reaction to the backlash against Fast and Furious. That is, what Issa may be after is not so much what happened with the guns, but what happened inside Holder’s house once they discovered that news of the failed operation had gotten out.

    And Enablers.

This was the dedicated crew that was after your guns?

    Christ.

  19. Forget Reagan Democrats, soccer moms, and NASCAR dads. The No Labels blog presents a new poll to argue that voters fed up with paralyzed politics could form a new pragmatic majority during the 2012 election:

    ****************************

A majority of voters (54%) are Problem Solving Voters (PSVs), which is defined as someone who:
    — When voting for national office, chooses candidates who are focused on solving problems rather than the candidates who align most closely with their party affiliation
    — If a member of a political party, somewhat often or frequently votes for candidates outside of their party for national office

94% of Independents are Problem Solving Voters, compared to 30% of Democrats and 33% of Republicans
    — Problem Solving Voters are discouraged with the current state of our country—only 29% think the country is heading in the right direction, compared to 42% of non-PSVs
    — Only 16% of PSVs believe that the current leaders in Washington are able to get things done; 84% believe we ultimately need a new group of leaders who are focused on solving problems

If the 2012 Presidential election were held today, Mitt Romney would win the PSV vote 51-49, while Barack Obama would win the non-PSV vote 52-48
—This is in contrast to the 2008 election, when Obama carried the PSV vote 48-37
—On specific issues, PSVs see Romney as more of a problem solving candidate for Tax Policy (55%), Deficit Reduction (58%), and Immigration (51%), and see Obama as more of a problem solving candidate for Healthcare (59%)
