COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Zimmerman charged with 2nd degree murder

What affect will this have on the election?

  • What happens if Zimmerman is exonerated?
  • Will the rioting begin?
  • Has anyone heard a word about the white student murdered by three blacks in Mississippi?
  • Why is AJ Eric Holder meeting and praising Al Towanna Sharpton?

  1. JACKSONVILLE - Those who know State Attorney Angela Corey say she's never buckled under public pressure.

"If you're being prosecuted by her, you need to be scared and you need to get the best defensive lawyer you can find," said Tampa defense attorney Joe Episcopo.

During her 26 years as a prosecutor, she has tried hundred cases, which have included 54 homicides.

She was elected state attorney in 2008, and she has a reputation as a tough, aggressive lawyer.

"She made that through her prosecutions of homicides, and by the fact that she prosecuted a 12 year old that caused international uproar—it didn't bother her a bit," Episcopo said.

Episcopo was referring to 12-year-old Cristian Fernandez, who was accused of killing his 2-year-old brother.

Some called her an "overzealous prosecutor" for charges against Fernandez. She fought for a life sentence for him, and succeeded in getting him tried as an adult. The case is still pending.

LINK: More on the Cristian Fernandez case .

Aside from putting bad guys in prison, Corey also finds the time to teach. With her extensive experience in homicide cases, she's often invited to speak to law enforcement agencies all over the country.

"She's a teacher at the police academy at Florida State and she's a professor at Florida Coastal University. So she's got some teaching credentials behind that tough prosecutor image, which means she knows the law, she teaches the law," Episcopo said.

  3. The mistake Zimmerman made was not to insist on charges being files on the newly dead Trayvon Martin for assault and battery and attempted murder. Followed by a civil suit against his parents for dereliction of parental duty.

When in that situation Zimmerman should have insisted on going to a hospital and also documenting publically his injuries.

He should have also made a public statement at that time announcing what a criminal Trayvon was.

This is from a lengthy brochure on Neighborhood Watch put out by the National Sheriff's Association,

    Patrol Procedures
    1. The patrol should be well defined.

    2. Only residents of the defined community, at least 18 years
old, should participate in the patrol.

    3. Patrol members must have participated in a training session.

[Note: Zimmereman did take a training session which included a slide and instructions on what his responsibilities were and 'were not'.]

    4. A patrol team should consist of two people: a driver and an
observer in the patrol vehicle or two neighbors walking
together. A vehicle may be marked with a removable sign.

    5. The purpose of community patrol is to observe and report
only. Patrol members should not leave their vehicle or
    become involved with a suspect.

    6. Patrol members do not possess police powers. Each member
is liable as an individual for civil and criminal charges
    should he exceed his authority.

    7. Patrol members should not challenge anyone. The patrol’s
visual presence should be a deterrent to most criminal
activity. If a suspicious situation continues, patrol members
should call law enforcement professionals and request
    assistance.

    8. Patrol members should not pursue vehicles (except briefly)
to get the license number. They should not attempt to
    enforce traffic laws.

    9. Patrol members should patrol as designated, in a random
fashion, and at varied times rather than in an observable
    pattern.

    10. Patrol members may not drink alcoholic beverages while on
patrol nor report for patrol if they have been drinking.

    11. Patrol members do not carry weapons.

    12. Any members violating patrol procedures may be banned
from participation in the community patrol.

    13. Patrol members should take notes of suspicious situations
on log sheets. The notes may become evidence if a situation
becomes a criminal matter. A copy of the notes could
be turned over to the Block Captain and the original kept by
the patrol member. (The notes may be needed later for the
patrol member to refresh his memory.)

You would be hard pressed to find anyone here who would have anything positive to say about Holder.

The lack of coverage on the student shot in Mississippi as opposed to that in the Martin case points out the double standard and hypocrisy that exists in this country on issues of race.

Obama commenting on the Martin case was purely political, an appeal to the base.

That being said, up to this point it does not appear Holder and the DOJ will get involved in the Martin case by designating it a hate crime.

As I recall, in the Sanderson case, the three blacks were arrested and charged with capital murder inside of a week. It took six weeks for Zimmerman to be charged, and frankly, it only appears it happened because of the public outcry that was raised.

The more I see the details of the FL. law, the more I think it sucks.

  33. .

I can sympathize with you to a degree Gag, but there are gradations in this sort of thing. And while there are variations in how each person views the order of things, some are more clear cut than others. For instance, I suspect calling someone an ass, dick, or shit would be viewed with more tolerance than calling them a motherfucker. Likewise, a one-off when you are pissed is more understandable than one who constantly goes back to this well. Just my opinion.

Everyone is biased, a racist, bigoted, etc. to some degree. However, how you express those biases reflects on the individual. Deuce, for instance, has a bias against blacks for a number of reasons (crime, the race card, etc.), but he backs up his views with statistics not stereotypes. As far as I can remember, he doesn't stoop to ethnic slurs. I have been called bigoted, racist, and anti-semitic on this blog. Normally, it would not bother me at all. I am what I am and frankly don't give a shit. What does upset me, however, is when those who call me those names refuse to spell out the specific reasons they are calling me them. Then the names appear to be merely slurs, petty and juvenile.

Bob, has a tendancy to run amok a couple of times a year on one subject or another. For the past few days, it has been about blacks. Today, instead of just making an argument that blacks on the Zimmerman jury might taint the jury process, he reverts to the use of ethnic slurs. It was gratuitous, unnecessary, and childess.

Should he be banned. Naw, IMO. However, the more people that suggest he go to the mall and walk it off the better. It will save him embarrassing himself more.

  34. Fin One man couldn't destroy this country if he tried, not even Obama.

True and deeply so. I thought about that when the story broke about bin Laden's plans to kill Obama and Petraeus, as well as their GWB wet dreams. Such plans are a very clear indicator of how little the Muslim radicals understand western institutions, in particular USA (and how deeply ingrained the Big Man mentality is.) Hell, probably a good number of American citizens would be surprised. But no, removing the guy at the top won't do dick.

9/11 was supposed to bring this country to its knees (the war debt being an admittedly good gut punch.) One wonders the extent to which our side leveraged that implicit demonstration of strength to our negotiating advantage.

"Engagement" with these FUBAR clusterfucks is a modern nightmare, whether it's healthcare or Muslin radicalism, which leads directly to the dive-under-the-desk-for-cover-and-wait-for-Armageddon mentality. A lot of it does seem size-related, TBTF, and dysfunctional central bureaucracies, which is simplistic of course but I throw it out there to segue into the subject of devolving power away from Washington back to Paradise, otherwise known as the States.

Quirk: The more I see the details of the FL. law, the more I think it sucks.

Regardless of the objective truth of the specific set of laws in FL, it is self-deception to assume that the States will be much better at governing than Washington, another Republican mantra that may or may not be gaining momentum depending on who you read/believe. The key difference in such a migration of power will be size - and that may be enough to matter. But it's not the state of perfection that its proponents claim. It is another way of ensuring less - make that more manageable - government for those who are interested in such things.

    RE Patrol procedures

That's a fully defensible set of reasonable protocols and it makes Zimmerman look more vulnerable to the charges.

Probably true as a general statement. My personal view is informed less by ideology than by the practical imprint of corruption. The states are fully corrupt. A mini cesspool is still a cesspool.

And so this country experienced the phenomenon of white people who recognized the historic injustice, felt guilty and made a conscious effort to change their perspectives. It may have gone through phases that could best be described as awkward, possibly plastic, and often uncomfortable, but try they did. And for making the effort, this group was treated to the sneering contempt of the newly educated group with their clever little websites like SWPL (Stuff White People Like.) The whole concept of race needs to be phased out.

Perhaps acceptable when you are out drinking with your bros (although I still don't see the point unless you think it's cute); however, not really acceptable in a public forum. IMO.

Perfect knowledge would be helpful. We don't have it. Life is a journey. (Cue the music.) The Thinkers have outpaced the Doers. To resurrect a point made awhile back, the Tea Party bombast imploded when confronted with the orders of magnitude more difficult challenge of governing in an imperfect environment with imperfect knowledge - and lots and lots of money. There is no spreadsheet app for governing. Another way of putting it, The Smart Set doesn't perform as well when it can't control the environment.

      You miss the point.

The point - to me, I may be alone - is that we wouldn't be talking about racism, reverse or otherwise, if the subject were put to bed. Start with the meaningful gesture of eliminating EEO forms. Just get rid of them. Then bob could go back to his North Dakota jokes.
