Telepromter Inventor Dies - White House Has Flag at Half Mast

Teleprompter inventor Hubert Schlafly dies at 91

A key member of the team that invented 

the teleprompter, which feeds scripts to actors, politicians and newsreaders, has died at the age of 91.
Hubert Schlafly Jr died last week in the US state of Connecticut after a brief illness, according the funeral home that handled the arrangements.
His funeral was held on Tuesday in town of Greenwich, where he lived.
Schlafly was working at 20th Century Fox film studios in 1950 when he developed the teleprompter.
He had been asked by the company to build a device that would help actors remember their lines.
Schlafly's prototype teleprompter, which debuted on the set of a US soap opera, was placed beside a film camera and used a motorised scroll of paper inside a suitcase to assist the show's actors.
The device was soon adopted by politicians and was used at the Republican Party's national convention by former US President Herbert Hoover in 1952. It has been employed by every US president since that time.

'Most innovative engineer'
Schlafly helped to start TelePrompTer Corp and eventually became the company's president, accepting an Emmy Award on its behalf in 1999.
Schlafly, who held 16 total patents, also won an Emmy in 1992 for his work in creating the first cable system to permit subscribers to order special programmes, said a friend, Thomas Gallagher.
"Hub Schlafly was the cable industry's most innovative engineer and, at the same time, one of its ablest executives," Charles Dolan, the chairman of Cablevision, said in a statement on Tuesday.
"Whether you were his friend or competitor, he was always congenial and supportive and probably had more friends than anyone."
Subsequent upgrades to the teleprompter, which have allowed lines of script to be superimposed on to the front of cameras, are still in use today, assisting entertainers, politicians and newsreaders.
Schlafly himself delivered a speech using a teleprompter for the first time at the age of 88.

  1. It’s easy enough to see why this particular narrative has endured. Not only does it position the president as a Muslim Manchurian candidate with longtime ties to agents of the caliphate, but it also assures resentful whites that this seemingly brilliant black man isn’t so smart after all.

    In that sense, it’s of a piece with the right-wing obsession with Obama’s use of a teleprompter, and with the widespread suspicion that he didn’t really write the eloquent Dreams From My Father, a claim Trump recently made at a Tea Party rally. Obama, in this view, is both sinister and stupid, canny enough to perpetrate one of the biggest frauds in American history but still the ultimate affirmative-action baby.

    Trump is clearly not as intelligent as Obama, but he’s not an idiot, either. When he blows this particular dog whistle, he knows exactly what the Republican base is hearing.

  3. Explain that to me again…...(CNN) -- A toddler shot and killed his mother, the boy's father told South Florida police, who say they will talk to the 2-1/2-year-old.
    The father, who called 911, told police he was trying to take the firearm away from the child when it discharged.
    The boy's mother -- Julia Bennett, 33 -- was shot once in the back and died from the injury, said Miramar Police spokeswoman Tania Rues.
    "What we do know is that last Wednesday, shortly after 7 o'clock, we received a 911 call from a gentleman stating that his 2-1/2-year-old son accidentally shot his mother -- the boy's mother," Rues told HLN's Vinnie Politan.
    Rues said investigators will talk to the toddler about the shooting, but that "due to the age, we're not expecting to get much."
    The boy's father has not been identified by police. They said he has cooperated fully with the investigation, which started with a 911 call he placed on April 20.
    In that roughly 4-1/2-minute call, a man's voice can be heard asking the dispatcher what to do. He speaks with a thick accent and seems overcome with emotion as he tries to explain what happened.
    "My son picked it up and I tried to grab it," the man said about the gun. "Oh God, I can't believe this."
    Rues said the State Attorney's office will decide whether to file charges. The boy's father could face charges of negligence, she said.
    Bennett and the boy's father were not married and did not live together at the time of her death, according to Rues.
    "This should serve as a reminder to all parents out there to not leave firearms accessible to children. Even if you believe the firearm is not loaded, it's just not smart. It's not safe," she said.

    KABUL (Reuters) - Several people were killed and wounded in a shooting between an Afghan Air Force pilot and foreign troops following a dispute at the airport in the Afghan capital on Wednesday, the Afghan Defense Ministry said.

    The shooting follows a string of attacks by Afghan security forces against their NATO-led mentors carried out either by "rogue" soldiers or by insurgents in uniform who have managed to infiltrate their ranks.

    Such incidents highlight the challenge for U.S. and NATO forces as they try to prepare for a gradual handover of security responsibilities that is scheduled to begin in July and end with the withdrawal of all foreign combat troops by the end of 2014.

    A spokesman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said there were casualties among its troops after the Kabul airport shooting but could not disclose whether any had been killed.

    "We can confirm an incident took place in the Afghan Air Force compound within the airport involving small-arms fire. We do not know what started the incident and we believe the incident has now concluded," the ISAF spokesman said.

    "Yes, there are ISAF casualties," he added.

An impossible feat given the lack of faith or political longevity in the Karzai Government . Short of fighting an invasion , there is not much you can get the Afghans to rally around. An Afghan Army for Karzai is not going to happen. Either we Exit, get rid of Karzai or drop the Afghan Army requirement.

  16. The American people are hard to figure, sometimes, but I've never seen anyone get traction trying to demonize a politician for what he might have done, or not done, before he was thirty.

    We've all been young, and we've all been stupid. Politicians are, generally, too target-rich an environment to waste your ammo on what they might have done in College, or before.

    The average voter, out there, is starting to realize that we need some serious action on some pretty big problems, right now. That average voter could care less about Obama's grades at Hahvahd, or a school he attended, or a trip he took when he was a teen-ager.

    They made their decisions on that two years, ago.

    There is no denying that.

    You are not, however, a "Natural Born" US citizen.

    The Constitution creates different classifications of citizenship.

    No Person shall be a Representative who shall not have attained to the Age of twenty five Years, and been seven Years a Citizen of the United States ...

    No Person shall be a Senator who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty Years, and been nine Years a Citizen of the United States ...

    No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President


    The Framers knew what they were writing. They knew the difference between a citizen and a natural born citizen. Or they'd not have mentioned that natural born requirement, as one of the qualifications for President.
    Especially as it was omitted for Congressmen and Senators.

    Is a "C"-section baby born naturally?

    Obviously a naturalized citizen is not "natural born".

    boob posted volumes that indicated that "natural born" referred to the citizenship of parents. That both needed to be US citizens, for the child to be "natural born".

    Now, boob's many references could be incorrect in their historical thinking and subsequent conclusions. It could be that anyone born in the US is a "natural born" US citizen.

    That would include, of course the ever famous "anchor babies".

    Assuming that Natural Born means both parents must also be US citizens:

    George Washington, could not have been validly elected President in 1788, because there was no United States when he was born in 1732 for him to be a natural born citizen OF.

    He was born a British subject.

I also think using dear old Mr. Hubert Schlafly's death, which happened over a week ago, to make fun of our wonderful president is definitely not kosher.

    While half the country is pointing out all the flaws in the so called birth certificate, it's most likely authentic, and the Republicans should be using better strategy than trying to prove its not if they want to stay in the game. As far as Donald Trump goes, that arrogant piece of shit can kiss my white Democratic ass.

    EWARK, Sunday, July 16 -- The Negro districts of Newark erupted again last night and early this morning. Four persons were killed during the night, bringing the total to 21 as the fighting went into its fifth day.

    Incensed by the slaying of a white fire captain by Negro snipers, Gov. Richard J. Hughes said he was considering an appeal for Federal help in capturing the terrorists.

    Two Negro women were killed in clashes between snipers and the National Guard and the police, and a looter was killed as he ran from a store. Terrorists ranged outside the ghetto and gunfire - including bursts from machine guns - resounded in downtown Newark. There was a renewed outbreak of arson. A guardsman was critically wounded.

    Although most of the [firing?] was concentrated in Negro areas, the police reported sniping in every section of the city. The police used so much ammunition that 20 cases of rifle cartridges were borrowed from nearby Union City.

  49. I just did. It is a clear fraud. I thought so when I looked at iyt this afternoon and did not have to go into the reason why. I use photoshop and downloaded the pdf and took it to 1200%. Every typed word had a halo. The video shows it in illustrator and there is no denying it is a fake.

    i remember Obama hurrying to Hawaii right before the innauguration or election, probably to 86 some family photo albums.
