COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

The TSA, Another Big Government Failure

Father of dirt bag bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab warned US Government about his fanatic son. Maybe he should have had tea with President Barack Hussein Obama.

The same dreary headlines when a massive government bureaucracy fails; More of the same:

(CNN) -- Passengers flying into the United States from abroad should expect additional security measures at U.S. and international airports a day after a passenger detonated a device aboard a flight from Amsterdam, Netherlands to Detroit, Michigan, the Transportation Security Administration said Saturday.

Measures will include increased pat-downs and gate screening, as well as having to stow carry-ons and personal items, including pillows.

"We ask that passengers follow the instructions of international security and flight crews," the TSA said.

Of course they will step up their pat downs. They do not have another answer because they are besotted with political correctness and fear of profiling.

Tens of thousands of obviously middle-class middle-aged suburban American white woman will be frisked, perfume bottles and skin creams seized, while some black Nigerian with a name like Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab and a passport with stamps from all the usual Middle Eastern shit holes gets through the MPG (mustn't profile gauntlet). Of course when you have a president with the handle of Barack Hussein Obama, perhaps it is understandable.

Never mind, it is only a matter of time before one of these Muslim shit birds gets lucky and kills more Americans because god is so fucking great and Allah the greatest of the great.

Disaster was averted because passengers took matters into their own hands. The only thing better would have been if they had kicked the snot out of him and then strangled his sorry ass till his eyeballs rolled back in his head and he quit twitching.

Excuse me while I spit.

  3. Some Swedish "expert" said this "proved" it is now more difficult to pull off a mass terror event.

Quite the contrary, it demonstrates that you do not have to take over the cockpit, and there would have been nothing any passenger could have done if the explosive had worked properly.

AND, by simply waiting til the gear is down, carnage is gauranteed below.

...altho over Detroit, the property damage would be a minimal sum, what with the average house now being worth about $1,500.

Best to try Manhatten again, they've forgotten all about 9-11.

Has the al-Qaeda franchise in Yemen made a strategic decision to attack the United States?

The Ft Hood shooter was also connected to Yemen, “is there a pattern”?

Is US intelligence failing to connect the dots?

Is the White House is stonewalling on inquiries by the House?

Is al-Qaeda evolving techniques to “get [weapons] into other environments where they can do significant damage”?

  7. It is a US problem, tha's why.

The US has the authority and responsibility to determine who gets a US visa and embarks on US planes to fly in US air space.

The US government sets the standards including the certification of feeder airports to US cities.

You may not have noticed but visa standards for Africans have been loosened not tightened and from countries that have significant muslim polpulations.

Where were the US marshals on that flight?

Go through PHL airport and you think you are leaving Mogadishu with fat ass American Black Muslims in hijabs checking security for the TSA, paid for by US taxpayers.

if you take a taxi to or from Philadelphia airport you will undoubtedly get a driver who is Muslim or African. The US State Department does not give work visas for taxi drivers. You cannot get a drivers license in Pennsylvania without a valid US work permit or resident visa. All those taxi drivers have access to Philadelphia Airport.

All are security matters entrusted to state and federal government.

That plane was saved by the quick thinking of a Dutch citizen and American civilians. The African Muslim was on the plane courtesy of the US Government.

Network leaders and members - in and outside Europe, in such places as Afghanistan, Pakistan and Africa - are forbidden to communicate by telephone, whether cell or satellite, or use Internet lines such as email.

Connections are maintained by a small band of secret couriers who memorize coded messages and transfer them orally at destination without understanding their content, a safeguard against betrayal in case they are captured.

  32. Officials Point to Suspect’s Claim of Qaeda Ties in Yemen

The Nigerian man charged in a failed attack on a jet told investigators that he had obtained the explosives from an expert in Yemen linked to Al Qaeda. The suspect’s father had warned the U.S. about his son.

    Federal Criminal Complaint (pdf)
    Times Topics: Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab

Mr. Abdulmutallab’s name was not unknown to American authorities. His father, a prominent Nigerian banker, recently told officials at the United States Embassy in Nigeria that he was concerned about his son’s increasingly extremist religious views.

As a result of his father’s warning, federal authorities in Washington opened an investigative file and Mr. Abdulmutallab’s name ended up in the American intelligence community’s central repository of information on known or suspected international terrorists.

Had the explosive worked properly, there would have been nothing the passengers could have done...

    ---
"The suspect’s name was inserted last month into the Terrorist Identities Datamart Environment, or Tide.

About 550,000 individuals are registered in the database. A subset of that is the Terrorist Screening Data Base, or T.S.D.B., which has about 400,000.

By contrast, fewer than 4,000 names from the T.S.D.B. are on the “no-fly” list, and an additional 14,000 on a “selectee” list that calls for mandatory secondary screening, an Obama administration official said.

At the time Mr. Abdulmutallab’s name was recorded in the Tide database in November, the official said, “there was insufficient derogatory information available” to warrant putting him in the T.S.D.B., no-fly or selectee lists, and so he was not on any watch list when he boarded the plane bound for Detroit.

    What a dick.

She makes the point I pushed before. You can't trust the government to protect you. You have to take the responsibility yourself.

When asked why the system didn't stop this guy she said that in fact it did. The passengers did their job. The crew did their job.

But what about TSA? They notified the other 180 planes in the air what had happened. Duh?

When asked how a guy who was on the terrorist watch list could get a US visa and be allowed on the plane she said "Well there are a lot of lists. He wasn't on the right one." Duh?

When presented with results of a GOA report showing hundreds of millions spent on 10 new technologies for airport security over the last eight years and the fact that none of them have been deployed she said something to the effect that "technologies are continually evolving". Using that rationale I guess I would never buy a new computer.

However, her final statement was comforting. The American public shouldn't worry unduly about terrorism. The system worked. The public did their job. The crew did their job. The TSA notified the other planes in the air (after the fact). Also, the government is reviewing it's processes. Sweet.

As David Brooks just said on the same program:

"The TSA procedures are not a security program. They are a job works program."

The guy was Nigerian, he trained in Yemen, he was a mechanical engineer, he was radicalized, he's rich, his parents turned him in.

What does it take to get on the "real" terrorist watch list? Having your name spelled wrong. Hell that's what happened to that Canadian guy who got renditioned to some black prison in Europe.

I will grant that the United States is not at war with any African country, nor with Islam.

This is not a new policy, for the United States. In fact it has been US policy for well over a decade, the border raids of 9-11-01 not causing a change in the course charted by US.

The US has no quarrel with Islam, only specific individual criminals. In fact in the days after the 9-11-01 raid the only civilian folks in the air above the United States were Osama's immediate family. Exemplifying that not only was Islam not to blame, but neither was the bin Laden family nor Saudi Arabia.

No clan, tribe or nation was to blame. Only Osama, Doc Z and their band of cross border jihadi.

This is even the policy in Iraq and Afghanistan in combat actions by the US military. They arrest and prosecute the terrorists as criminal defendants.

These are Federal policies of long standing.

Why would anyone expect the civilian segments of the Federal government to act more robustly?

e-mail from my wife this morning--

A very old man lay dying in his bed. In death's doorway, he suddenly smelled the aroma of his favorite chocolate chip cookie wafting up the stairs.

He gathered his remaining strength and lifted himself from the bed. Leaning against the wall, he slowly made his way out of the bedroom, and with even greater effort forced himself down the stairs, gripping the railing with both hands.

With labored breath, he leaned against the door frame, gazing into the kitchen. Were it not for death's agony, he would have thought himself already in heaven.

There, spread out up on newspapers on the kitchen table were literally hundreds of his favorite chocolate chip cookies.

Was it heaven? Or was it one final act of heroic love from his devoted wife, seeing to it that he left this world a happy man?

Mustering one great final effort, he threw himself toward the table. The aged and withered hand, shaking, made its way to a cookie at the edge of the table, when he was suddenly smacked with a spatula by his wife.

"Stay out of those," she said. "They're for the funeral.

  112. Ash, I realize facts vex you but perhaps you missed this little item this past summer:

LAGOS, Nigeria -- A week of brutal violence in northern Nigeria has spurred questions over whether an obscure homegrown religious fundamentalist group represents a broader threat to national security in Africa's most populous nation.

More than 800 people were killed last week during fighting between an Islamic fundamentalist group calling itself Boko Haram, and Nigerian security forces. The clashes spread across several northern states.

A Red Cross worker in the northern city of Maiduguri, where most of the fighting occurred, said that 780 bodies had been collected in the past few days, and that at least 3,600 Maiduguri residents had been displaced. Officials in Bauchi, where the violence began, had earlier confirmed more than 50 deaths.

Rights groups say many civilians were among those killed, though exact figures remain unknown. Police say most of the dead were militants.

They are Nigerians and Muslims. Not the same as Swedes, Swiss, Mennonites, Mormons, Japanese, Italians or Icelanders, wouldn't you agree?

    More Terror!

I have to interrupt my vacation with a quick post. The "Breaking News"of the day is that a very radicalized young Nigerian from an affluent family, decided to ruin Christmas for a bunch of innocent folks. The president was informed of his actions and has declared him a terrorist. Fortunately, he was caught and the counter- terrorism folks are all over it.

Now my question is this: Are there more Umar Famoul Abdul Mutallabs out there? And if there are, were they working in concert with this genius? I use the word genius facetiously of course, because there is nothing genius about this guy.

Umar, you had a chemical engineering degree, I am guessing you are smart enough to know better than trying to kill your fellow human beings . Religion can be a beautiful thing, but it sure can make people do some crazy things.

Also, for all of you black folks who thought that only Arabs were going to be profiled, think again. This Nigerian brotha just changed the game for some of us Negroes here in A-merry-ca. Thank you Umar. Now my flight home will be delayed due to increased security and longer lines.

  117. Fire Napolitano [Jonah Goldberg]

Understandbly, the White House is trying very hard to get out in front of the would-be Christmas bomber story. The head of the Department of Homeland Security isn't helping.
I watched her on three shows and each time she was more annoying, maddening and absurd than the previous appearance. It is her basic position that the "system worked" because the bureaucrats responded properly after the attack. That the attack was "foiled" by a bad detonator and some civilian passengers is proof, she claims, that her agency is doing everything right. That is just about the dumbest thing she could say, on the merits and politically.

I would wager that not one percent of Americans think the system is "working" when terrorists successfully get bombs onto planes (and succeed in activating them). Probably even fewer think it's fair that they have to take off their shoes, endure delays and madness while a known Islamic radical — turned in by his own father — can waltz onto a plane (and into the country). DHS had no role whatsoever in assuring that this bomb didn't go off. By her logic if the bomb had gone off, the system would have "worked" since it has done everything right.

Napolitano has a habit of arguing that DHS is a first responder outfit. Its mission is to deal with "man-caused-disasters" afer they occur. It appears she really believes it. If the White House wants to assure people that it takes the war on terror seriously (a term Robert Gibbs used this morning by the way), they could start by firing this patently unqualified hack.

  119. Probe of USS Cole Bombing Unravels

A week after the Cole bombing, President Bill Clinton vowed to hunt down the plotters and promised, "Justice will prevail." In March 2002, President Bush said his administration was cooperating with Yemen to prevent it from becoming "a haven for terrorists." He added: "Every terrorist must be made to live as an international fugitive with no place to settle or organize, no place to hide, no governments to hide behind and not even a safe place to sleep."

Since then, Yemen has refused to extradite Badawi and an accomplice to the United States, where they have been indicted on murder charges.

Other Cole conspirators have been freed after short prison terms. At least two went on to commit suicide attacks in Iraq.

"After we worked day and night to bring justice to the victims and prove that these Qaeda operatives were responsible, we're back to square one," said Ali Soufan, a former FBI agent and a lead investigator into the bombing. "Do they have laws over there or not? It's really frustrating what's happening."

To this day, al-Qaeda trumpets the attack on the Cole as one of its greatest military victories. It remains an improbable story:
how two suicide bombers smiled and waved to unsuspecting U.S. sailors in Aden's harbor as they pulled their tiny fishing boat alongside the $1 billion destroyer and blew a gaping hole in its side.

Bodine, who is Jewish, was the Ambassador to Yemen. When the USS Cole was attacked, the FBI sent a team led by John O’Neill who immediately suspected Israeli involvement. Bodine started an intense political battle to oust O’Neill. Bodine wanted to control the investigation, and resented the fact that suddenly there were hundreds of FBI personnel in the country.

Albright provided a handful of State Department personnel to watch the investigation.

Percy Sutton dies; His Obama revelation omitted from obituaries
    Thomas Lifson

Legendary lawyer and politician Percy Sutton has died at the age of 89, and the major media are omitting mention of one of his most notable acts. The former Borough President of Manhattan, Sutton had a long and distinguished career as a lawyer (he was Malcolm X's attorney) and media mogul, who purchased radio stations in New York and other cities, making them into high rated black-oriented outlets. He also purchased and renovated (thereby saving from the wrecking ball) New York's legendary Apollo Theatre in Harlem. To top it off, Sutton was member of the Tuskegee Airmen, one of the most celebrated groups in military aviation circles. A man of great accomplishment, whatever else one might think about his politics, and a man worthy of great respect.

However, one of Sutton's most notable moments is absent from the media hagiographies I have seen: he stated on television that he knew that an Islamic supremacist, Dr. Khalid al-Mansour, and advisor to a wealthy Saudi, had paid for Barack Obama's education at Harvard Law School.

Exactly how young Barack Obama, a man of slender means, managed to pay for a Harvard Law degree has long been a mystery, and the President has not been forthcoming about any details of his elite education.

"If the politcal winds change, I'll stand with the muslims" I recall Obama saying.

  127. 9-11 Diary

Before the lecture Hauer, who I have known for years, confided that he had just been involved that morning in identifying the body of a close friend, John O'Neill, who died in the WTC. Hauer said "body", but from what else he indicated it was obvious O'Neill's remains were nothing the family ought to view.

Hauer hasn't slept in days. He is haggard and jittery. Distraught.

"John O'Neill was head of the FBI's counterterrorism branch in Washington," Hauer told me privately. "He led every important investigation you can name --- the USS Cole, Tanzania, Kenya bombings. He retired three weeks ago. I helped him get the job as head of security for the World Trade Center. And the irony is the guy he chased for most of his career killed him."

When Lederberg spoke of his fears for the future Hauer thought of O'Neill.

My dear friend Karen told me this morning that she has been overcome by a sense of doom. I have not. I truly believe that New York will triumph, grow, and be a better city and community five years from now than it has ever previously been.

But I confess that, for the first time in my life, I now believe in the concept of evil.

If he had come out of that building and someone died who he hadn't tried to save, he would have had to commit suicide.

"I've tried to tell Susan this, in a way, but she's not ready yet for the truth. In the next weeks or months, I'll get her down here, and we'll take a walk along the ocean, and I'll explain these things. You see, for Rick Rescorla, this was a natural death. I watched the Man Who Knew after listening to all (or most) of the 9/11 Commission session with Thomas Pickard. I am astonished that not one of the commissioners asked Pickard: a) why the FBI, for petty bureaucratic reasons, drove their foremost expert on Al Qaeda out of the FBI during the very period in summer 2001 when threat intelligence indicators regarding Al Qaeda were rising most rapidly, and b) under oath what role Picard personally played in driving O'Neil out. To the contrary I remember at least one commissioner who complimented Pickard on his distinguished public service.
... I am saddended and angry that the 9/11 Commission has not followed the very clear leads on 9/11 responsibility that Frontline provided.

In the 9/11 Commission hearings in mid April 2004, John O'Neill's name briefly surfaced during FBI Director Robert Mueller's testimony. And O'Neill was cited by commission member Richard Ben-Veniste in his questioning of Louis Freeh. former FBI director. Here is that excerpt from the transcript.

Ben-Veniste to Freeh: " ìYou have re-emphasized this morning the fact that the New York office of the FBI, which was led by James Calstrom [sic] and then Barry Mawn and John OíNeill, particularly focused on the Al Qaeda terrorist threat. In fact, John OíNeill perished in the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11th, 2001, at the hands of cowards who murdered civilian men, women and children, people who John OíNeill had hunted with a determination that sometimes bordered on an obsession. Indeed, in January 2001, OíNeillís concerns stimulated an interagency group white paper urging greater protection of federal buildings in Lower Manhattan. And that white paper noted that, Osama bin Laden, his Al Qaeda organization and affiliated extremists group currently pose a clear and immediate threat to U.S. interests. Do you recall discussions with John Oíneill about the threats from Al Qaeda or others that might occur within the United States?î

Freeh: ìYes, I do, and particularly in that time frame. . . .î [In the rest of his response, Mr. Freeh does not pick up on the OíNeill reference.]

Or, they drop from the overhead compartment, along with the O2 masks.

We'd have to have some field testing, of course.

But no chance of a spontaneous decompression, while no one could stand against 200 passengers, all ready to taze a terrorist.

    Casting Director's Report

Klaus Nomi selected to portray Ash in blockbuster sitcom.

Critics applaud the choice of Nomi to fill the role of the unfailingly nuanced, but constantly liberal, visitor to the bar. Ash, of whom it has been said, "Is he a fucking masochist, or what?" claims to be an American residing in Canada.

  160. Meanwhile, out on the farm, from the latest USDA Newsletter--

"In the past year the economy, inclement weather, drought and other factors have hurt many farming operations around the country. These events pushed some farmers to the emotional breaking point. Watchin their livelihood being threatened is difficult for farmers and ranchers and for those who care about them.

If you know a farmer or rancher who is under stress and is reluctant to ask for help call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline or if you just need to talk to someone, call 1-800 273 TALK. Your call will be routed to the nearest crisis center, where trained staffers are available 24/7".

It's a serious problem sometimes, in farm country.

The Apache Dog Shit Eating Ceremony was a real thing. Found it in Campbell. The conception was, if the divine presence pervades the world, it must be present, however unseen, in all disgusting, repulsive things and situations too, however incomprehensible, and this ceremony conditioned one to accept that fact.

  161. Ash, why so emotional over the Nigerian Muslim that wanted to kill Americans he did not know?

You are not upset that he would want to come to the US to murder, but you are that we would want to discriminate against him from enetring the US without a very careful and thorough investigation.

This single incident is going to convenience millions of American citizens. What benefit is there to the US to continue to allow entry from countries and people that wish to damage and destroy us? There is none.

The story dovetails so nicely with so many themes - airport security, racial profiling, police action vs WAR ON TERROR, the nanny state, fear, one person messing it up for all of us.

Sheesh, is Nigeria now on the invasion list?

    Just a-pickin' and a-paintin' away
    Woo, woo, woo, woo

Ooh, my brothers and sisters still talk about how
Daddy lost his temper that day
You see, he built a picket fence from the garage to the house
Well, Sam, tell me what I say
The same day the garbage man backed into the fence
And the whole darn thing gave way
    You should have been there

    Daddy couldn't read
    Daddy couldn't write
One thing daddy sure could do right
    He could swear
    Oh, Lord
    I declare
    Yes, he could, y'all
    Daddy could swear, I declare
    Yes, he could, y'all

    Tell'em about
    Tell about your daddy

    He'll probably go out
    (Talkin' about daddy)
    Cursin', just a-fussin'
    And a-bein' mad
But I hope the good lord will understand
That daddy's is just bein' my dad

Ash, I can't say that I am surprised at your amusement, it was only one airplane after all and there are plenty more out there.

I think you have a problem with white Americans. So let me color the situation, retone the cast of players, look at the negative.

    Here goes, listen up.

Let's pretend that the plane was a church filled with black people and some white klansman closed the doors and just threw a little liquid over the church and set it on fire.

    Would that twist your knickers?

  169. There was a poem found in some Jewish ghetto, scrawled on a wall, during the worst of WWII, that expressed something of the same thing, Trish. You may have read it somewhere, it's kind of famous.

O Lord of the Universe, I see Thee not, hear Thee not, yet I know Thou art here....

Memory fails for the quote, but the sense is kind of the same.

Same kind of ceremony can be found among the Hindus, I believe. Eating rotten human flesh, that kind of thing.

Dialogueing with Ash, that kind of thing...
