COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

We have need of a soothing story to banish the disturbing thoughts of the day

(lyrics are written by Samuel Johnson, from \"Lovers on a Park Bench\")

The day with its cares and perplexities is ended and the night is now upon us.
The night should be a time of peace and tranquility, a time to relax and be calm.
We have need of a soothing story to banish the disturbing thoughts of the day,
to set at rest our troubled minds, and put at ease our ruffled spirits.

And what sort of story shall we hear ?
Ah, it will be a familiar story, a story that is so very, very old,
and yet it is so new. It is the old, old story of love.

Two lovers sat on a park bench with their bodies
touching each other, holding hands in the moonlight.

There was silence between them.
So profound was theire love for each other,
they needed no words to express it.
And so they sat in silence, on a park bench,
with their bodies touching,
holding hands in the moonlight.

Finally she spoke.
"Do you love me, John ?" she asked.
"You know I love you, darling." he replied.
"I love you more than tongue can tell.
You are the light of my life.
My sun. Moon and stars.
You are my everything.
Without you I have no reason for being."

Again there was silence as the two lovers sat on a park bench,
their bodies touching, holding hands in the moonlight.
Once more she spoke. "How much do you love me, John ?" she asked.
He answered : "How much do I love you ? Count the stars in the sky.
Measure the waters of the oceans with a teaspoon.
Number the grains of sand on the sea shore. Impossible, you say."

"Yes and it is just as impossible for me to say how much I love you."

"My love for you is higher than the heavens, deeper than Hades,
and broader than the earth. It has no limits, no bounds.
Everything must have an ending except my love for you."

There was more of silence as the two lovers sat
on a park bench with their bodies touching, holding hands in the moonlight.

Once more her voice was heard.
"Kiss me, John" she implored.
And leaning over, he pressed his lips
warmly to hers in fervent osculation...

That fervent osculation would be gone, though. Whoever heard of a man and a woman kissing with fervent osculation?

  2. Here's a disturbing thought for the winter wheat crop around this area. Just took the garbage out and it's turned really cold again. With no snow cover, this can cause the soil to heave up and down a bit, which can pull the young roots of the winter wheat out and expose them. If you get a cold wind on top of this, it can spell trouble.

Special forces surrounded the Nablus homes of the three Al-Aksa Martyrs' Brigade operatives in an attempt to arrest them. However, when the men did not heed calls to leave their homes, the troops opened fire and killed them.

None of the soldiers were hurt in the operation.

In one of the houses, the soldiers discovered two hidden rifles and two guns. The weapons were transferred to police laboratories to check if they were used in Thursday's attack, Army Radio reported.

The men were identified as 38-year-old Raed Sukarji, 39-year-old Ghassan Abu Sharkh, and 40-year-old Anan Subih. According to the Palestinian news agency, Sukarji's wife was also reportedly wounded in the operation.

Ghassan Abu Sharkh's brother, Nayef, was a former commander of the Aksa Martyrs' Brigades in Nablus and was killed by the IDF in 2004.

Also overnight Friday, three Palestinians who had apparently tried to infiltrate Israel from the northern Gaza Strip were killed by IDF troops.

Soldiers identified several people crawling near the Gaza border fence and alerted a helicopter, which opened fire and killed them. Weapons were discovered near the men's bodies.

The Obama Administration is preparing a statement condemning the operation as a war crime. Gunfire directed against Palestinians violates their human right to live free from fear and only perpetrates the dreary cycle of violence.

  10. I read the lyrics to be ironic. The beginning of the song is a slow harmonic and then counting, repetitive counting, imprinted with babble.

The repetitive babble and jabber of most conversations and the repetitive counting of the cycle of everything. On and on, as all lives are lived.

That continues for four minutes, a spoken refrain of "these are the days"
"at the end of the day" the proof is in the pudding" "to tell the honest truth"

All the meningless nonsense of words to fill the space of silence

and then the violin breaks, as simple as a student practicing.

Soothing is needed to settle our troubled minds.

a story is required to give us some peace, a break, some solace. A simple unimbelished, trite everyday story, cliched, un-embellished, safely predictable the stupid ordinary things people say in the silly stage of all romance.

nothing fancy please, just some verbal comfort food with MacDonalds-like familiarity and satisfaction.

  13. I agree with your interpretation Deuce. The writers intent is obvious. (Not quite as sure of Bob's comments.)

However, I prefer the clever to mind-numbingly banal.

I got married young and divorced a couple years later. Right after that I met a couple of guys in school who had just gotton out of the service. They knew each other since grade school and had an ongoing contest to see how many girls they could...well...persaude.

They were good looking guys but it was their bullshit that got the women. Over 500 for each of them the last time I heard which was years ago. Rarely, talk of stars and Hades, but just as trite. And the ladies smiled and sucked it up. Amazing.

For me a decent deal. Like in Ruth as recently described by T, gleaning isn't a bad gig. However, I still had to grind my teeth listening to their inane musings. Luckily, I was drinking pretty heavy at that time.

From an artistic standpoint, Glass achieved his objective. It's not the artistry I object to it's the truth about the banality of a good portion of our lives. I'll take clever and you can have the relaxing pap.

McGovern sees this early fermentation process as a clever survival strategy. "Consuming high energy sugar and alcohol was a fabulous solution for surviving in a hostile environment with few natural resources," he explains.

The Charter of Paris for a New Europe in 1990, and the Istanbul Charter for European Security in 1999, were supposed to establish a kind of "bill of rights" designed to create the political foundation for a post-Cold War peace. These rules rejected spheres of influence, recognized the right of all countries to equal security and to choose their own alliances as part of a new cooperative security structure. Moscow agreed to the rules at a time when it, too, wanted to shed its imperial past and join an enlarging Western community. But as the pro-Western drive in Russia waned and the imperial impulse began to return in the late 1990s, Moscow concluded that these rules were encouraging Western enlargement at its expense.

  36. Turn to Alinsky when you are confused--

    By Aaron Klein

    Saul Alinsky
Just five days after affirming on air that he is a liberal, MSNBC host Chris Matthews exclaimed that radical community organizer Saul Alinsky is one of his heroes.

Stated Matthews: "Well, to reach back to one of our heroes from the past, from the '60s, Saul Alinsky once said that even though both sides have flaws in their arguments and you can always find something nuanced about your own side you don't like and it's never perfect, you have to act in the end like there's simple black and white clarity between your side and the other side or you don't get anything done.

"I always try to remind myself of Saul Alinsky when I get confused," Matthews said on his "Hardball" show, speaking to guest Sen. Bernie Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist, on the topic of President Obama's health care plan.

Least the Republican stood firm against this Christmas massacre of a health care bill, though somebody didn't vote, I think.

    Tired from walking
    They sat on a bench
    Warm night
The stars and moon were out

    She leaned a little

    They watched the traffic
    Go east and west

"See over there on a branch
A couple of owls?" he said.
    "Those are owls?"
"Couple of night owls, I think"

    "Why aren't they hunting
I thought they do that at night?"
    "Taking the day-er, night off
    I quess"

The new monorail came by, quite fast
"That's the new Express" she said.
"hmmph, I wouldn't want to ride one of those"
    "Well you wouldn't, you're a hunter gatherer"

    "And a farmer too"
    She tossed her head alittle
"Well, you know what to do"

"Do you really love me?" she asked
"Well sure, you know I do"
Some moments pasted, she said with a grin

"His name was Quirk, and the answer is no"
    "And the reason?" he asked.
    "Cause Quirk was a jerk
A trite pap of a man"

"But you seem to get me-
I don't mean it that way-
    But understand me
If you know what I mean"

They watched the night, the owls had flown away
    From all their talk.
"I want to go back to the Holiday Inn" he said
And she agreed in her mind

    "So do I" she said
    They walked away silently
"And you know what?" she said with a smile

Sorry, Bob. I would have to disagree.

As the EB’s Bard, you must understand that words have specific meanings.

    “trite pap”

The word pap is a noun usually referring to ideas expressed in a written form. Succinct and to the point.

Now I will take your point with regard to trite. Trite is an adjective and somewhat but not entirely redundant in this case.

I could have gone with just pap.

On the other hand, I found all your suggestions lacking in one way or another.

Bathetic, maudling, schmaltzy, all adjectives, all with about the same meaning, all insufficient by themselves singly or in combination, and all carrying the same redundancy as noted above with trite.

Spoon-fed is inappropriate as either an adjective or a verb.

  55. from a poem called Trite Pap...

    "But I've wanted to ask,
    That fellow before, his name?
    And if I may ask
Did you make it with him?"

"His name was Quirk, and the answer is no"
    "And the reason?" he asked.
    "Cause Quirk was a jerk
A trite pap of a man"

"However, I did make it with two of his friends," she said.
On a rainy miserable lazy afternoon.
We had some Papst Blue Ribbon
and screwed till I was all a' twitter."

  56. I misspoke a while back and upthread.

I have nothing against blue collar neighborhoods or their taverns.

Nothing against the blowsy broads who occasionally wander in off the street and chat up the boys.

It's only when a blowsy broad shifts into shameless selfpromotion for a seat on the board that my teeth begin to grind.

Behaviour of the proprietors is predictable. They'll cater to the broads to keep the boys comin' back.

  61. Random sampling from last week's festivities at Maggie's Madness.

    - In ENSENADA, El Mex reporting on calle Mazatlan y Guaymas one person found "embolsada"(wrapped in plastic). AFN reports this was a man who had been shot and the body was dismembered.

    - All agencies reporting the decapitated bodies of a man and a woman found in colonia Buenos Aires.

    - All agencies reporting in the soccer playing field of Otay Mesa behind the Hotel Bugambilias one man found executed and beheaded.

    - All agencies reporting on calle Herreria in colonia Anexa 20 de Noviembre one body found executed and wrapped in plastic.

    - All agencies reporting (Frontera is saying after a violent confrontation) in Villa Fontana, Tijuana, State Preventative Police rescue one person and arrest a dangerous group of five kidnappers, operatives of El Teo. Also seized were five AK-47's, 10 magazines, 300 cartridges, 2 trucks, one of which had a report of robbery with violence from 12/16
    .

I think this next guy could just say he'd been Christmas shopping:

    - In ENSENADA, all agencies reporting State Preventative Police arrest Alfredo Perez Rafael Peralta, an operative of the Arellano-Felix Organization (CAF) in Lomas Dorado with two AR-15's, one AK-47, two .38's, one 9mm super, 9 magazines, 690 cartridges, 2 nextel radios, 2 cell phones, one military cap, and a set of police handcuffs. He also had cash, 8K 714 dollars and 29K pesos.

All those and more at the link.

    You?

    Friendly fire, collateral damage.

Besides I think you are merely looking at the words and not hearing the music. You are missing the nuance. Deuce can explain it to you.

Yep, real war is on the horizon for Israel...

The USA has decided (under the Big Empty O) to let the chips fall where they may...

The new anti-semitism czar 1st statement was critical of Amb Oren NOT attending a JStreet conference. Jstreet is a soros and arabian funded group that hold positions that the State of Israel completely disagree with and hold as dangerous for the State of Israel's survival.

The Obama's position is that of voting present..

that is his policies across the globe...

In the end, Israel sees his inaction is actually action.

Israel sees how obama would be pleased to see it do America's dirty work, only to then condemn Israel at the UNSC...

yep hell is about to break open...

    She leaned a little
Put her hand on his chest

The area of the heart, not the genital.

    And,

"But you seem to get me-
I don't mean it that way-
    But understand me
If you know what I mean"

    goodnight
