COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Perhaps that is one of God's gifts to Canadians.

  8. Maybe color doesn't figure in this thing at all. Maybe Colin Powell judged Obama to be the least socialist candidate. After all, it was McCain suggested propping up home prices with a $300 billion cash infusion of taxpayer's money, and it was Obama shot it down.

Where about are we wrt the above?

Have we shown weakness and will soon get beaten somewhere, somehow?

Or are we about to show weakness?

Or have we shown weakness, gotten beaten, resolved to do something different, and now are resolving to depart from that path a bit more?

There is much that is good, but the influence of money on the legislative process is corrupting the whole system, and the only solution is to mandate solely public financing of all campaigns. It would be the best investment taxpayers ever made. You don't think those lobbyists kicking 200 large here, 300 large there for houses and overseas junkets are doing it out of the goodness of their hearts do you? No, they expect to be well reimbursed, ten to one, with earmarks.

With all due respect, bobal, you've taken yourself down a peg in my eyes today. Maybe tomorrow you'll be back in the saddle but today you have very little moral standing, even over a small thing like this.

And apparently it’s considered impolite to say so."

How in God's name do you know that Powell endorsed Obama because he is black? Really, how? The only anser to that question is the answer of a racist. There is no other and Bobal, yes, you are, plain and simply, a racist. At least Mat admits it but you are a coward. Sad, but true. I've had enough of you. Take care.

  17. Ever tried to stalk crows, Bob?

I did once. For a whole afternoon, over several fields of fresh picked corn and past numerous hedgerows.

They're canny. Put up a sentry or two. You have to move as the sentry birds are shifting location.

I got right under their tree, finally. If I'd had a BB gun and a shot gun shell, I'd have scored. But that would have taken the fun out of it.

  18. We wouldn't need to worry about these campaigns if the offices being fought over had limits to their powers, clear mandates and powers to enforce the law, and transparency such that the electorate could verify both of the above were in working order.

It wouldn't matter if King Shit of Fuck Mountain was elected, if there checks to power were in place. If you can't guarantee those checks and balances, it doesn't matter one bit who finances the crooks or the heros.

That's kinda how Obama's political movement came to power, fed the sentries plenty of misinformation. Too many juicy tidbits to fill the empty suit. Oh, it was enticing to ponder all the unknown unknowns about Obama. And then all of a sudden, there he is, below our tree, wishing he'd brought his gun, but kinda happy he didnt.

  25. New thread, more reason to ba a Librarian

    3.1 National Defense

We support the maintenance of a sufficient military to defend the United States against aggression. The United States should both abandon its attempts to act as policeman for the world and avoid entangling alliances. We oppose any form of compulsory national service.

3.2 Internal Security and Individual Rights

The defense of the country requires that we have adequate intelligence to detect and to counter threats to domestic security. This requirement must not take priority over maintaining the civil liberties of our citizens. The Bill of Rights provides no exceptions for a time of war. Intelligence agencies that legitimately seek to preserve the security of the nation must be subject to oversight and transparency. We oppose the government's use of secret classifications to keep from the public information that it should have, especially that which shows that the government has violated the law.

    3.3 International Affairs

American foreign policy should seek an America at peace with the world and its defense against attack from abroad. We would end the current U.S. government policy of foreign intervention, including military and economic aid. We recognize the right of all people to resist tyranny and defend themselves and their rights. We condemn the use of force, and especially the use of terrorism, against the innocent, regardless of whether such acts are committed by governments or by political or revolutionary groups.

  31. I recall one of my more memorable trips to Canada

Quebecan Nationalists are commuters by nature. When they saw a chap who looked like he was lost in his car, they not only helped him out of his auto, but decided to park it for him. That no parking was nearby only further warms your heart. The man was shocked, gobsmacked, at their consideration.

Zogby: McCain Is Gaining, Race Tightens

    Sunday, October 19, 2008 11:14 AM

Republican John McCain continued a slow advance on Democrat Barack Obama in the race for president, moving back within three percentage points as the race begins to head down the stretch run, the latest Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby daily tracking poll shows.

McCain now trails Obama by 2.7 points, down from the 3.9 point deficit he faced 24 hours earlier.

Seven-point-one percent of the likely voters surveyed said they remain undecided.

Obama lost five-tenths of a point from yesterday's report, while McCain gained another six-tenths of a point. It was the third consecutive day in which Obama's numbers slipped and McCain's numbers increased.

  41. North Korea released photos earlier this month showing Kim inspecting a military unit and appearing healthy. However, it did not say when the pictures were taken.

Some analysts said the photos appeared to have been taken earlier because plant foliage was wrong for the time of year.

On Thursday, North Korea threatened to break off all relations with South Korea if its new conservative government continues what the North called a policy of reckless confrontation with the communist nation.

  44. Sen. Barack Obama set a new record for presidential fund raising in September, with more than $150 million in contributions, allowing him to swamp Republican rival Sen. John McCain in spending on advertising and organizing in the final days of the campaign.

    ...

Obama campaign officials say the big September fund-raising number, which eclipsed internal projections, gives Sen. Obama the ability to exploit such popularity surges without having to rein in activities in other states. For example, the campaign bought advertising time last week in West Virginia, which hadn't been considered competitive until recent polling suggested otherwise.

    ...

Sen. Obama's field operations, which have become his campaign's trademark, are also of a size unprecedented in presidential politics, stunning even seasoned veterans such as New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson.
