COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

  3. Life across Texas has abruptly shifted as floodwater turned streets into rivers. Hundreds of schools shut down in the state.

    ...

The George R. Brown Convention Centre in downtown Houston had taken in 9000 people as of Tuesday morning, said Charles Maltbie, a regional disaster officer for the Red Cross who is at the convention. That number is nearly double the centre's anticipated capacity of 5000.

The convention centre is the evacuation site for all air evacuations, Maltbie said, and bus evacuations are being diverted to other shelters around the city. When asked what the centre's top capacity is, Maltbie said: "We will meet the need."

  4. President Donald Trump last week encouraged a government shut down - not a debt default - if Congress refused to fund a wall to keep out illegal immigrants on the US-Mexico border. He was due to deliver a major tax reform speech on Wednesday (Thursday AEST), in a bid to bolster his stalled economic agenda.

Since Harvey hit the Gulf Coast and Houston, Mr Trump sounded more conciliatory and expressed hope that the government could avoid being shut down.

Most retailers and restaurants remained close in Houston on Tuesday, as residents fled rising flood waters after a reservoir levee was breached south of the city.

Australia: Ex-human rights chief says “Sharia’s no different to Catholicism,” calls for Sharia courts
By Pamela Geller - on August 29, 2017
    AUSTRALIA

So many Western leaders seem determined to make sure their countries commit suicide. If Gillian Triggs gets her wish, as she probably will, and sharia courts are established in Australia, she will see them justifying spousal abuse and consigning women to lifetimes of brutalization and violence. And that’s just the beginning. When the jihad engulfs Australia, Gillian Triggs might reconsider her position. But by then it will be far too late.

“‘Sharia’s no different to Catholicism’: Ex-human rights commissioner Gillian Triggs says Sharia law courts SHOULD be allowed in Australia – just as the Vatican already influences everyday life,” by Stephen Johnson, Daily Mail Australia, August 24, 2017:

Australia’s former human rights commissioner Gillian Triggs says Sharia law should be allowed in Australia.

The former law professor likened the Islamic legal system to Catholic diktats from the Vatican.

‘There are various ways in which religious law affects the private lives of people,’ she told Daily Mail Australia on Thursday night, after sharing a stage with Iranian-born Labor senator Sam Dastyari.

‘The views of the Vatican affect the lives of Catholics in this country.’

Professor Triggs also said Sharia divorce courts should be allowed in Australia, under a system where a Muslim man can leave his wife by saying ‘I divorce you’ three times and a woman’s word is worth less than a man’s.

‘If it’s a matter of private law within the Muslim community and they want to manage their affairs in that way, and they believe in those rules, that’s reasonably acceptable,’ she said.

That leftist smirk, smile, and laughter when discussing serious matters
    By Thomas Lifson

What is it about so many leftists that causes them to smirk, smile, and even laugh when discussing their purportedly serious proposals?

For example, Tucker Carlson last night interviewed Robin Biro, one of those “strategists” who show up on cable news to argue a point of view. Mr. Biro was arguing in favor of a proposed law in California that would criminalize use of an “unwelcome” pronoun, for instance, calling using “he” to refer to someone with an X-chromosome and a Y-chromosome (what science calls a “male”), when that person prefers “she” or maybe “ze.”

In the 3-minute segment below, notice how Biro reacts to perfectly reasonable comments by Tucker. Hat tip: Daily Caller:

    SMIRK VIDEO

Do lefties smirk this way because they know their proposals are ridiculous and they are just trolling us?

Or are they nervous when confronted with facts and logic?

Or is something else at work.

    I seriously wonder.

  11. Handling Harvey shows America at its best
    By Jonah Goldberg August 29, 2017 | 6:41pm

    U.S. Army/Sipa USA

Even hurricanes have a silver lining: The downpour washes away a lot of bull.

Don’t get me wrong. This is a tragedy for untold thousands of people. And no upside could possibly balance the scale against the downside. The full human toll of Harvey, now a tropical storm, remains to be determined, but it’s already steep. As of this writing, the official count of fatalities was up to 14, and that number will probably rise. The economic cost will take a long time to calculate. And the emotional price — lost homes, heirlooms, pictures, worry, stress — can never be calculated.

And yet, I couldn’t help but notice that there is a “feel good” aspect to the whole catastrophe. The best example is the hyper-viral story of two men loading up their boat and driving into the storm. CNN’s Ed Lavandera found them under a highway overpass readying the vessel.

“You guys just jumping in to help out?” Lavandera asked.

“Yes, sir,” says one of the men.

“What are you going to do?” Lavandera asks him.

“Go try to save some lives.”

That man was African-American. His partner appeared to be Caucasian or maybe Latino. But it doesn’t matter at all. All they wanted to do was help. While it was a journalistic faux pas not to get the men’s names, it almost made the story more endearing that we didn’t get them, because it reinforced the idea that they were just normal Americans.

All weekend, TV and social media highlighted stories like this. Granted, there were plenty of attempts to politicize the storm. Some had superficial legitimacy. Did Texas officials — particularly the Democratic mayor of Houston and the Republican governor of Texas — drop the ball in not ordering a mandatory evacuation? But even these debates lacked the bitter vitriol that marked coverage of Hurricane Katrina or even Hurricane Sandy.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Other attempts to bend an apolitical event to a preferred political narrative were more desperate and despicable. The Twitter account for an outfit called Charitable Humans unleashed a Cat-5 gale of schadenfreude at Houston’s woes. Over a satellite image of Harvey: “Texas has been bitten by Karma, but they still have a huge debt to the bank of Karma.” “I just can’t bring myself to even consider providing aid to any red state, let them clean up their own mess.”

To its credit, the organization later deleted its account and released an apologetic statement saying its leaders were “horrified” by their social media coordinator’s actions.

But the point was already made. We live in an ugly, tribal moment in American history. Indeed, the more representative story of the weekend came out of Berkeley, where antifa goons beat up nonviolent protesters they unilaterally deemed to be fascist.

By comparison, despite the terrible plight of its victims, Harvey was the happy story, at least in one narrow respect. Politics is becoming a substitute for identity, even religion, for millions of Americans. How you vote, what team you root for on the cable shout shows, is becoming a signifier of who you are. The media fuel this attitude, in large ways and small, by turning the news into “narratives” of good people and bad people. This is an unhealthy development, regardless of which ideological uniform you wear.

But politics and ideology are, or should be, downstream from all of the most important things in life, at least in America. (It’s a different matter in places like Venezuela or North Korea.) Under normal circumstances this can be hard to see, never mind appreciate, because we are lucky to live in a fabulously rich and free society where people can afford to make politics into a sport or fashion statement.

Most of us can see this within our own networks of friends and family, where political differences rarely trump more meaningful bonds. But on a mass scale, it becomes apparent only in dire circumstances, like when floodwaters wash away the nonsense and reveal the decency of the American people.

"Robert "The FBI White-Washer" Mueller's team of Trump-hating lawyers is leaking to Trump-hating journalists that a Russian immigrant named Felix Sater tried to make some deals between Donald Trump and Russian entities.

Sater is an undercover agent for the FBI. Here is a passage from the Wikipedia article about Sater.

      [quote]

In 1998, Sater was convicted of fraud in connection to a $40 million penny stock pump-and-dump scheme conducted by the Russian Mafia involving his company White Rock Partners. In return for a guilty plea, Sater agreed to assist the FBI and federal prosecutors as an informantin organized crime.

In 2009, he was sentenced to pay a $25,000 fine and served no prison time. As a result of his assistance, Sater's court records were sealed for 10 years by Loretta Lynch, then the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York. Lynch's decision to seal his records was discussed at her 2015 Congressional confirmation hearings to become attorney general; she stated that Sater provided "information crucial to national security and the conviction of over 20 individuals, including those responsible for committing massive financial fraud and members of La Cosa Nostra."

In July 2017, The Financial Times, citing five sources with knowledge of the matter, reported that Sater had agreed to cooperate with investigators looking into an international money laundering scheme involving Viktor Khrapunov, a former government minister in Kazakhstan. Khrapunov, who now lives in Switzerland, has been accused by the Kazakhstani government of embezzling millions of dollars and is wanted by Interpol.

      [unquote]

Sater became an FBI informant in about 1998 and seems to have continued to work as an FBI informant to the present. He probably earns a lot of money for doing so.

Mueller was the FBI Director from 2001 to 2013."

  16. Flake Toast

The most important poll in America right now isn't the approval rating for President Donald Trump. Instead it's a new survey of Republican voters in Arizona that has a stunningly clear message for the rest of America. And that message is this: The Republican Party is stuck with President Trump.

The JMC Analytics poll came out Monday and it showed that incumbent GOP Senator Jeff Flake not only trails leading primary challenger Kelli Ward, but he trails her by a whopping 26 percentage points. It also shows that Flake only has a 22 percent approval rating among Republicans, and that those voters would like to see someone else be the GOP nominee in the 2018 Senate race by a 44 percentage point margin. Finally, 76 percent of the Arizona Republicans surveyed approve of the job President Trump is doing.

That's a lot of numbers to digest, but the final message is clear. And that message is that Flake's recent attacks on President Trump are coming at a hefty price, even though he represents a state that only tilted to Trump in the election by fewer than 100,000 votes and under four percentage points.

In other words, as bad as many establishment Republicans think publicly supporting President Trump may be for them and their electoral chances, publicly opposing him is worse. For all the pundits who insist, cajole, and even pray that the GOP make a clean break with the Trump team to preserve their political future, the best response is this poll.

Much of this is due to the establishment's very obvious lack of understanding the election results.

Rep. Rohrabacher says 'rendezvous' being set up with Trump to relay info from WikiLeaks' Assange on DNC hack
    By Andrew Kaczynski, CNN
Updated 2:21 PM ET, Wed August 30, 2017

"It is my understanding from other parties who are trying to arrange a rendezvous with myself and the President, it is being arranged for me to give him the firsthand information from (Assange)," Rohrabacher said.

The White House did not return a request for comment on Rohrabacher's comments.

(CNN)Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher said Monday that a "rendezvous" is being set up between him and President Donald Trump to relay information he received from WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange about the hack of the Democratic National Committee last year.

Rohrabacher, who is considered to be among the most pro-Russia members in Congress, met with Assange earlier this month and claims Assange told him that Russia was not involved in the hacking. Rohrabacher said after the meeting that he wanted to brief Trump on what Assange told him. Appearing on the Sean Hannity radio show Monday afternoon, the California congressman said that meeting was in the process of being set up.

"It is my understanding from other parties who are trying to arrange a rendezvous with myself and the President, it is being arranged for me to give him the firsthand information from (Assange)," Rohrabacher said.

Sydney Muslim Youth Group Trains Girls to Avoid Cameras so Photos Show Only Males

    CULTURAL JIHAD

A Muslim youth group in Sydney, Australia, is busily training the next generation in the Islamic way it should go, teaching girls to look away from cameras so that photos only contain the faces of males.

A new promotional video from the youth group actually hides the faces of its female leaders.

In its 13-minute video, the United Muslims of Australia only shows the backs of a couple hijab-wearing women — and that, only briefly.

A male sheikh, Shady Alsuleiman’s face, features clearly in the video, along with other men.
The Daily Mail has the story (h/t The Religion of Peace):

The United Muslims of Australia’s website features a 13-minute promotional video which shows the faces of five male leaders.

However, two hijab-wearing women in the video are only shown from behind, even though their names are on the screen.

High school teacher Mariam Elrayes Kayal, the sister youth program co-ordinator, looks away from the camera in the video as she talks.

‘It’s a place people come and feel really comfortable,’ she says.

‘You get to meet your sisters every week, have a bit of a social gathering, bond over morning tea or something that someone has baked.’

Footage of a male sheikh, Shady Alsuleiman, is on the screen addressing a room full of women in hijabs, known as the UMA Sisterhood, during Ms Kayal’s video narration.

Sheikh Shady, the president of the Australian National Imams Council, features prominently in the video, with his face and that of other men clearly shown.

‘We created a very important project, which is the camps, where they could uplift the spiritual side,’ he says.

Another woman, Marwa Elsankari, is also in the video looking away from the camera as she talks about the group’s charity work.

‘We gift those who need smiles for those who are going through hardship, medically, financially,’ she says.

Daily Mail Australia contacted United Muslims of Australia, who have a youth centre at Padstow in Sydney’s south-west, but has not had a response.

Last year, the group sold separate tickets for men and women attending its Quest for Success conference in Sydney.

They did this even after freelance journalist Alison Bevege had successfully sued Islamist extremist group Hizb ut-Tahrir for gender discrimination, for making her sit in a separate section for women at the back of the room.

Sheikh Shady was part of another gender controversy last year, when an Islamic conference in Melbourne he was addressing blacked out the faces of female speakers.

The Australian Islamic Peace Conference pamphlet featured the often smiling faces of 12 male speakers, but not the women.

This is the third report in a series, listing 2,000 new species over the last 17 years. However, the good news comes with a worrying trend, the WWF said.

"All the species that were discovered, all 381, are in areas where humankind is destroying the Amazon. This is very important to us, because it links the fact that our economic activities are causing species to go extinct before we even know about them," Ricardo Mello, WWF Brazil Amazon program coordinator, said.

"We have to show this and act so that economic activity is more transparent," he said.

Chilling moment parents who murdered their daughter are caught out by body language experts

It was during a TV interview that the parents of a teen girl became the prime suspects in her murder case.
A body language expert's analysis was the start of Iftikhar and Farzana Ahmed's lies unravelling when they were interviewed about the murder of 17-year-old Shafilea Ahmed's, who disappeared in 2003, The Mirror reports.
Shafilea Ahmed is one of the most prominent victims of an 'honour killing' - where people, often women and girls, have disrepected their family's honour or culture and face repercussions, often death.

Footage analysed by Cliff Lansley, a body language expert, shows Iftikhar and Farzana questioned over their involvement with their daughter's disappearance during a TV interview.

Iftikhar replies "Never. I couldn't even dream of it" when asked if he killed his daughter.

It wasn't just what Iftikhar said but his body movement combined that raised the eyebrows of Mr Lansley.

As he spoke, Iftikhar is seen lifting his head in an up and down motion at the moment he was pressed on his involvement in the murder, which is a signifcant indiction of guilt, according to Mr Lansley.

"He has got his eyes closed, his volume has dropped and we see the head nod yes. Slightly diagonal, but this is up and down," Mr Lansley said, who shares his findings on Investigation Discovery's Faking It: Tears Of A Crime.
The addition of "I couldn't dream of it" also alerted Mr Lansley to the fact Iftikhar was lying as it appears he is further trying to qualify his story in fear that his lies may be detected.

"Farzana is sitting here motionless," Mr Lansley added.

"But she reacts slightly when he says never. You get this little sideways glance to her right. She's looking over to check he is answering correctly maybe.

"He's doing all the speaking but silently she is the one who is the architect behind this whole episode."
Iftikhar was arrested and jailed. Source: AAP

The pair choked the 17-year-old to death in front of her four siblings, stuffing a plastic bag down her throat at their home in Warrington, Cheshire, after they argued about her choice of western clothes, the court found.
It was the culmination of years of arguments over Shafilea's wishes to follow a more westernised way of life.
She was studying to become a solicitor and took an interest in clothes, make-up and also boys.

Shafilea wasn't reported missing by her parents but by her college in September 2003 when she didn't turn up for a week, and her friends were concerned they had been unable to contact her.

She also helped in the conviction of her parents when in February 2003, she had run away from home before she was taken to Pakistan to be forced into a marriage.

She had asked social services to help her find a place to live.

In the application form, she cited domestic violence as a reason for wanting to leave.

“One parent would hold me whilst the other hit me," she wrote.

“I was prevented from attending college and my part-time job.”

Her sister, Alesha, gave a daming testimony during the trial and described how her parents suffocated Shafilea with a carrier bag forced into her mouth and then hands over her face to close her airways so she could not breathe.
Alesha then saw their mother in the kitchen "sorting through a pile of blankets and sheets' and holding a roll of black bin bags and two rolls of tape", the court heard.

She looked out the window and saw her father with a large object wrapped in bin bags with brown tape around it.
Shortly afterwards, she saw her father leaving in a car with Shafilea's body inside.

All four children shed tears in the court room when their parents were found guilty.

The pair were each jailed for 25 years in 2012.

    China’s 19th Party Congress
    By David Archibald

The next Presidential election will be on 3rd November, 2020. We can all plan around that if we want to. China also has a president who runs that country. The next Chinese Communist Party confab to choose future leaders will be the 19th Party Congress to be held in October or November, 2017. And that is as much detail that is available at the moment. Some 2,200 of China’s top people are expected to attend in Beijing at short notice.

All this means is that President Xi is unsure of his position. Normally Chinese presidents get two five-year terms and, normally, Xi would get another five-year term and then retire. But Xi wants to rule for longer and he needs the blessing of the 19th Party Congress to put that in place. Xi also ramped up China’s military adventurism and has led the Chinese people to believe that they will end up ruling the world. The problem of starting down that road is that there is no turning back without being labelled as a traitor. So Xi initiated the Doklam Plateau crisis with India to provide a fresh victory to go to the Party confab with and secure his position. But that crisis has ended and still no date has been set. What is a megalomaniac, messianic communist dictator to do?

It could be something very nasty, such as an attack on the Filipino base on Thitu Island in the South China Sea. Something that will confirm Xi’s reputation as a tough guy but not big enough for Japan and the U.S. to go to war over. Xi also has another window closing on him. President Trump has been quoted as saying to his Chief of Staff, Gen. Kelly: “So, John, I want you to know, this is my view. I want tariffs. And I want someone to bring me some tariffs.”

This is like FDR cutting off Japan’s oil supply during World War II to punish Japan’s aggression in China. The Japanese knew that the clock had started ticking down and they would have to choose. They chose war, but they got kicked out of China which was the intention of the oil sanctions. Unfortunately, the longer term plan -- that China would join the community of large, civilized nations and be a force for good in the world -- failed. China used its accession to the World Trade Organization to make a lot of money and is using some of those funds to prepare attacks on a number of its neighboring countries.

Now China is facing a U.S. President itching to impose tariffs on Chinese goods. If China attacks a neighbor now, that will be an excuse to ramp up the tariffs and impinge upon the Chinese economy. Politically-based tariffs, driven by Chinese aggression, will be easy to copy by other countries.

So that is why the fact that there is, as yet, no date set for the 19th Party Congress is so important. Xi may feel the need to kill some non-Chinese in a military action to secure his position, and as the days pass without a date set, the number to be killed to achieve that will rise. If he miscalculates, then it is all-out war.

What a way to run a country.

Sofia Vergara picks up major legal victory in bitter dispute over frozen embryos

Modern Family star Sofia Vergara has been locked in a bitter custody dispute with Nick Loeb over frozen embryos she and her former fiancé had made when they were together for years. Since the two split up, Loeb has aggressively tried to acquire custody of the frozen embryos. In his latest legal bid to obtain legal custody, Loeb filed an unusual right-to-live lawsuit against Vergara in Louisiana, the only state where frozen embryos have legal rights. He named the two embryos “Emma” and “Isabella” in court documents, and even went so far as to set up trust funds for them.

Loeb brought the lawsuit back in December and last week a judge threw out the case on the basis that it was filed outside the proper jurisdiction, given that the embryos were created in California. In court documents obtained by TMZ, the judge even kept up the theme Loeb started in the lawsuit, ruling that “Emma” and “Isabella” are “citizens of California.”

    Nice one, your honor.

  34. Greek Life retreat cancelled after banana peel found in tree

    Today at 8:17 AM EDT

A Greek Life retreat at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) was promptly cancelled this weekend after a banana peel was found hanging in a tree.

A student said he threw the peel because he could not find a garbage can, but the incident made some students uneasy, so the school “felt it was imperative to provide space immediately to students affected by this incident.”

A Greek Life retreat at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) was promptly cancelled this weekend after a banana peel was found hanging in a tree.

“To be clear, many members of our community were hurt, frightened, and upset by what occurred at IMPACT,” Interim Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life Alexa Lee Arndt remarked in an email between Greek leaders, according to The Daily Mississippian. “Because of the underlying reality many students of color endure on a daily basis, the conversation manifested into a larger conversation about race relations today at the University of Mississippi.”

Apparently, student Ryan Swanson admitted to discarding the banana peel in a tree after he was unable to locate a garbage can, and it was later spotted by Alpha Kappa Alpha President Makala McNeil, who leads one of the campuses historically black sororities.

“The overall tone was heavy. I mean, we were talking about race in Mississippi and in the Greek community so there’s a lot involved,” McNeil recalled, later adding that she and her friend were “all just sort of paranoid for a second” after spotting the banana.

After word of the banana spread throughout the retreat, leaders decided to end the event early. Arndt explained that she “felt it was imperative to provide space immediately to students affected by this incident.”

According to The DM, some students left the retreat in tears, with McNeil noting that they “didn’t feel welcome” and “didn’t feel safe.”

Swanson apologized for the incident, writing in a statement that he wants to “sincerely apologize for the events that took place this past weekend.”

“Although unintentional, there is no excuse for the pain that was caused to members of our community,” he continued. “I have much to learn and look forward to doing such and encourage all members of our community to do the same.”

While it is unclear how the university will proceed to handle the incident, Vice Chancellor for Diversity and Community Engagement Katrina Caldwell noted that she will be speaking with fellow leaders to decide “what makes the most sense.”

“Right now, we’re just talking to people on campus who have some experience working across diversity to help the students process what happened,” she added.

Campus Reform reached out to both Swanson and the university for additional information regarding the incident, and is currently awaiting a response.

  35. More laughs, MOME

Donald Trump told us that he’d hire the best people. He didn’t mention that he’d be unable to fire them.

The president is experiencing a bout of insubordination from his top officials the likes of which we haven’t witnessed in the modern era. It’s not unusual to have powerful officials at war among themselves, or in the presidential doghouse. It’s downright bizarre to have them publicly undercut the president, without fear of consequence.

The new measure of power in Washington is how far you can go criticizing the president at whose pleasure you serve. The hangers-on and junior players must do it furtively and anonymously. Only a principal like Gary Cohn, Rex Tillerson or James Mattis can do it out in the open and get away with it.

First, it was chief economic adviser Cohn saying in an interview that the administration—i.e., Donald J. Trump—must do a better job denouncing hate groups.

Then, it was Secretary of State Tillerson suggesting in a stunning interview with Chris Wallace of Fox News that the rest of the government speaks for American values, but not necessarily the president.

Finally, Secretary of Defense Mattis contradicted without a moment’s hesitation a Trump tweet saying we are done talking with North Korea.

    2. In a more normal time, in a more normal administration, any of these would be a firing offense (although, in Mattis’ defense, he more accurately stated official U.S. policy than the president did). Tillerson, in particular, should have been told before he was off the set of Fox News on Sunday that he was only going to be allowed to return to the seventh floor of the State Department to clean out his desk.

The fact that this hasn't happened is an advertisement of Trump’s precarious standing, broadcast by officials he himself selected for positions of significant power and prestige. A more typical scenario is that a president loses credibility in a foreign crisis when an adversary defies him, or in a domestic political confrontation when the opposition deals him a stinging defeat. Not at the hands of his own team.

This isn't the work of the deep state, career bureaucrats maneuvering or leaking from somewhere deep within the agencies. This is the shallow state, the very top layer of the government, operating in broad daylight, in fact wanting to be seen and heard differentiating themselves from the president of the United States.

    3. It should be up to chief of staff John Kelly to make it stop. What these officials are doing is much worse than a White House aide slipping into the Oval Office to leave a printed article from WorldNetDaily on a corner of the Resolute Desk. It's worse than Steve Bannon feverishly trying to undermine H.R. McMaster, which is simply staff-level intramural politics taken to another level.

This isn't “the system working,” the cliché for how various other power centers have thwarted Trump in the early going. It's the system gone haywire and tottering on the brink of a more serious crisis.

Nothing good can come from top officials of the U.S. government making it obvious that they believe, to borrow Tillerson’s phrase, that the president speaks for himself—and no one else.
