COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

New York Times Warns Purging of Monuments May ‘Mobilize the Right and Alienate the Center’

CASEY TOTH/AP

As the alt-left, supported by members of the Democratic Party, look to tear down more and more monuments across America, the New York Times is warning that the increasing scope of the left’s iconoclasm may be alienating centrists and mobilizing the right.

In an article Friday about the movement to rip down monuments and images in the wake of the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, this month, the Times says the disputes have proliferated with “dizzying speed” and suggests that the left’s fervor has started to produce questionable results:
But since the violence in Charlottesville, Va., two weeks ago, the anger from the left over monuments and public images deemed racist, insensitive or inappropriate has quickly spread to statues of Christopher Columbus, the former Philadelphia tough cop Mayor Frank Rizzo, Boston’s landmark Faneuil Hall, a popular Chicago thoroughfare and even Maryland’s state song. An Asian-American sportscaster named Robert Lee was pulled from broadcasting a University of Virginia football game so as not to offend viewers.
The article goes on to say that as the campaign moves past Confederate monuments, and begins to encompass a number of other grievances, “they have become to some an example of politically correct sentiments gone too far, with the potential to mobilize the right and alienate the center.”
When asked about the removal of statues this month at Trump Tower, Trump said:
George Washington was a slave owner. Was George Washington a slave owner? So will George Washington now lose his status? Are we going to now take statues to George Washington? How about Thomas Jefferson…are we going to take down his statue because he was a major slave owner?
While initially derided by some media commentators, Trump’s comments seem to be proving more and more accurate. Mayor Bill de Blasio has not ruled out removing a statue of Christopher Columbus in Columbus Circle near Central Park in the face of pressure from the left, while the Green Party’s 2016 vice presidential candidate Ajamu Baraka called for the removal of monuments to Washington and Jefferson.

Now, with Trump looking to be accurate in his assessment, some Democrats are getting nervous. The Times article cites Paul Begala, a Democratic strategist who warned that the Democrats are “driving straight into a trap Trump has set.”
“While I understand the pain those monuments cause,” Begala said, “I just think it in some ways dishonors the debate to allow Trump to hijack it.”

Begala and the Times’ apparent nervousness is supported by recent polls that show significant public opposition to the purging of the statues.
P
A recent Rasmussen report found that 90 percent were against the removal of Jefferson and Washington from public places. The Times itself notes that polling shows a majority of Americans favor keeping Confederate monuments, while it says support for changing street names and other symbols “falls off sharply.”

  2. talian American elected officials and community leaders took to the steps of City Hall on Thursday to blast City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and Mayor Bill de Blasio for considering the removal of the Christopher Columbus statue in Columbus Circle.

    Mark-Viverito, a Democrat, and Harlem elected officials held a rally earlier this week to request the removal of a statue of J. Marion Sims, a 19th Century doctor who has been called the “father of modern gynecology,” from Central Park, where it is located on East 103rd Street in East Harlem. Sims experimented on African slaves without their consent or any anesthesia throughout his career.

  3. In a new HuffPost/YouGov poll, a third of Americans favor removing statues and memorials of Confederate leaders, with 49 percent opposed. Just 29 percent of Americans favor changing the names of streets, schools and buildings commemorating Confederate leaders, while half are opposed.

  4. A Jewish activist group is now demanding Mayor de Blasio scrub all traces of the anti-Semitic Dutch governor from city property — even Stuyvesant High School — as part of his campaign to rid the city of “symbols or hate.”

    “Peter Stuyvesant was an extreme racist who targeted Jews and other minorities including Catholics and energetically tried to prohibit them from settling in then New Amsterdam,” said Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, the head of the Shurat HaDin-Israel Law Center.

    The masks come off:

    Paul Ryan throws in with the leftists to attack Trump's pardon of Sheriff Joe Arpaio?

    Good lord, what sane person wouldn't?

    It's another Trump attack on the judicial system. He ignored the advice of DOJ. He ignored standard procedure in such matters. He eschewed even checking the details of the case, the reasons presented for the verdict, or any recommendations from his staff or DOJ. He did it because he could. No other rationale except that he wanted to. It was a bone tossed to his base and a favor to one of his birther butt buddies.

    1. By the end of his presidency on January 20, 2017, Barack Obama had exercised his constitutional power to grant executive clemency—that is, "pardon, commutation of sentence, remission of fine or restitution, and reprieve" 1,927 individuals, all convicted of federal crimes.

      I am sure Obama checked the details on all the cases.

      1,715 were commutations

      212 were pardons

      1,927 bones tossed to his base. Previously I thought his base was mostly vegans.

      Most individuals granted executive clemency by Obama had been convicted on drug charges.

      Obama holds the record for the largest single-day use of the clemency power, granting 330 commutations on January 19, 2017, his last full day in office

      Obama issued more commutations than the past thirteen presidents combined.

      Obama did it because he could.

  11. President Trump “speaks for himself” on his values, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Sunday.

    The U.S. commitment to tolerance and equality is unchanged, Tillerson said, in the wake of controversy over Trump's response to racially tinged violence.

    “We express America's values from the State Department — our commitment to freedom, our commitment to equal treatment of people the world over,” Tillerson said on “Fox News Sunday,” adding: “And that message has never changed.”

    A United Nations committee last week criticized Trump for what it deemed his failure to fully condemn hatred and bigotry in the wake of deadly violence at a white supremacist march in Charlottesville earlier this month.

    “I don't believe anyone doubts the American people's values,” or the U.S. government's willingness to defend them, Tillerson said.

    Asked whether Trump's reaction, which included a statement that there was blame on “many sides” for the violence in Charlottesville, reflects American values, Tillerson answered evenly.

    “The president speaks for himself,” he said.

      Arpaio Pardoned, RINOs melt down
      By Patricia McCarthy

      What on earth has happened to the moral and political sensibilities of Paul Ryan, John McCain, Jeff Flake, Jeb Bush, etc.? All of those RINOs who are attacking President Trump for pardoning Joe Arpaio are simpering, whining traitors to the party they allegedly represent. They should declare themselves Democrats and be done with the masquerade.

      Perhaps they should remind themselves of all the criminals and thugs that President Obama pardoned, or that President Clinton pardoned. Trump made it clear at his rally in Phoenix that he was going to pardon the beleaguered sheriff. The audience there was thrilled, as were the millions of people watching on television, the citizens who want our immigration laws enforced. If there was ever anyone who deserved a pardon, along with Scooter Libby, it is Joe Arapio. This was a no-brainer! The man has enforced both federal and state laws for his entire career. Arpaio was found in contempt of court after a Clinton-appointed judge, Susan Bolton, ordered him to stop enforcing the law, detaining people he suspected (or knew) to be illegal immigrants. It was the judge who broke the law as so many of our activist judges have over the last decade. They do not want laws that protect our borders enforced. Such judges are traitors to the nation as well.

      How have we come to the point at which the Republican leadership in Congress is so consistently on the wrong side of their stated principles? They have made common cause with the likes of the odious Sen. Chuck Schumer and the rest of the left. They despise Trump. That is clear to everyone. They intend to continue their sabotage of the president, even if it means they lose their majority, even if it means they contribute to the further takeover of the country by the totalitarian left. They are apparently just fine with the increasing restriction on free speech and the failure to identify Antifa and BLM as the terrorist groups they are. They seem to be fine with the criminal nonsense perpetrated by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

      They seem to be fine as well with the many corruptions, past and ongoing, by the Clintons, the Obama holdovers and the crimes of George Soros since they are not interested in getting to the bottom of their many crimes. They are not bothered by the Robert Mueller witch hunt being conducted by him and his band of leftist brothers bent on taking Trump and/or anyone in his inner circle, down and out. We all know by now that these traitorous Republicans will cheer if Mueller finds something to tarnish the President. Do they not realize the contempt the millions of Americans who voted for Trump feel for each and every one of them? If they do and they do not care. They do not honor their oath of office to represent the people who elected them and to uphold the Constitution.

      Most Republicans who voted for Romney and Ryan in 2012 now realize why they did not win: they were and are utter wimps, willing to subjugate themselves to the prevailing media sentiment. This is the tragedy of our time. We are assaulted by a corrupt media conglomerate twenty-four hours a day. They are, as Trump says, purveyors of fake news. The DNC is now a mere appendage to the New York Times, the Washington Post, etc. CNN is pathetic; it has transformed itself into the Jerry Springer Show, broadcasting a relentless parade of angry slaves to identity politics who only see people not as individuals but as units to be categorized by race, class, and a myriad of newly-minted genders. This is the cabal to which the Republican leadership has attached itself. They are cowards. Their constituents are disgusted with them all and these turncoats deserve their derision.

  13. In fourteen hundred ninety-two
    Columbus sailed the ocean blue.
    He had three ships and left from Spain;
    He sailed through sunshine, wind and rain.
    He sailed by night; he sailed by day;
    He used the stars to find his way.
    A compass also helped him know
    How to find the way to go.
    Ninety sailors were on board;
    Some men worked while others snored.
    Then the workers went to sleep;
    And others watched the ocean deep.
    Day after day they looked for land;
    They dreamed of trees and rocks and sand.
    October 12 their dream came true,
    You never saw a happier crew!
    “Indians! Indians!” Columbus cried;
    His heart was filled with joyful pride.
    But “India” the land was not;
    It was the Bahamas, and it was hot.
    The Arakawa natives were very nice;
    They gave the sailors food and spice.
    Columbus sailed on to find some gold
    To bring back home, as he’d been told.
    He made the trip again and again,
    Trading gold to bring to Spain.
    The first American? No, not quite.
    But Columbus was brave, and he was bright.

    The first American ?

    That would be the Solutreans.

    Solutrean tools, 22,000–17,000 BP, Crôt du Charnier, Solutré-Pouilly, Saône-et-Loire, France
    The Solutrean hypothesis about the settlement of the Americas claims that people from Europe may have been among the earliest settlers of the Americas.[1][2] Its notable recent proponents include Dennis Stanford of the Smithsonian Institution and Bruce Bradley of the University of Exeter.[3] This hypothesis contrasts with the mainstream archaeological orthodoxy that the North American continent was first populated by people from Asia, either by the Bering land bridge (i.e. Beringia) at least 13,500 years ago,[4] or by maritime travel along the Pacific coast, or by both.
    According to the Solutrean hypothesis, people of the Solutrean culture, 21,000 to 17,000 years ago,[5] in Ice Age Europe migrated to North America by boat along the pack ice of the north Atlantic Ocean. They brought their methods of making stone tools with them and provided the basis for the later (c. 13,000 years ago) Clovis technology that spread throughout North America. The hypothesis is based on similarities between European Solutrean and Clovis lithic technologies.
    Supporters of the Solutrean hypothesis refer to recent archaeological finds such as those at Cactus Hill in Virginia, Meadowcroft Rockshelter in Pennsylvania, and Miles Point in Maryland as evidence of a transitional phase between Solutrean lithic technology and what later became Clovis technology.

    Why is it that every doctrinaire left wing white democrat thinks it de rigueur to bring up the race of whites in a disparaging self hating obstreperous manner? Must be the marching order of the day.

Arpaio was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, on June 14, 1932,[21] to Italian parents, both from Lacedonia, Italy.[22] Arpaio's mother died while giving birth to him, and he was raised by his father.[23] Arpaio completed high school and worked in his father's business until age 18 when he enlisted in the United States Army.[24][21] He served in the Army from 1950 to 1954 in the Medical Department and was stationed in France for part of the time as a military policeman.[24]

    California Moves To Jail People Who Refuse To Use Transgender Pronouns
    JAZZ SHAW Posted at 3:31 pm on August 27, 2017

    Let’s just list this as the next in an ongoing series of reasons why you should be glad that you don’t live in California. (And for those of you who actually do, I don’t have too much pity. You’ve had plenty of warning signals and you should have moved by now.) In the race to lead the nation in identity politics and political correctness taken to the umpteenth degree, California should be surging into the lead. A bill has actually been passed in the State Senate and is now under consideration in the Assembly which would impose criminal penalties – including jail time – if you are found to be addressing a transgender person using pronouns which don’t match the gender they imagine themselves to be.
