Trump and His Generals

What is U.S. goal in the world? Does anyone know?

Pat Buchanan on multiple failed interventions: 'We have lost control of our destiny'

THE WAR PARTY

For the World War II generation, there was clarity.

The attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec 7, 1941, united the nation as it had never been before – in the conviction that Japan must be smashed, no matter how long it took or how many lives it cost.

After the defeat of the Axis powers in 1945, however, Americans divided.
Only with the Berlin Blockade of 1948, the fall of China to Mao and Russia’s explosion of an atom bomb in 1949, and North Korea’s invasion of the South in 1950, did we unite around the proposition that, for our own security, we had to go back to Europe and Asia.

What was called the Cold War consensus – that only America could “contain” Stalin’s empire – led to NATO and new U.S. alliances from the Elbe to the East China Sea.

Vietnam, however, shattered that Cold War consensus.

The far left of the Democratic Party that had taken us into Vietnam had repudiated the war by 1968 and switched sides to sympathize with such Third World communists as Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, Ho Chi Minh and the Sandinistas.

Center-right presidents – JFK, Nixon, Reagan – accepted the need to cooperate with dictators who would side with us in fighting Communism.

And we did. Park Chung-Hee in Korea. The shah in Iran. President Diem in Saigon. Gen. Franco in Spain. Somoza in Nicaragua. Gen. Mobuto in the Congo. Gen. Pinochet in Chile. Ferdinand Marcos in Manila. The list goes on.
Under Reagan, the Soviet Empire finally fell apart, and the USSR then disintegrated in one of the epochal events of history.

The American Century had ended in America’s triumph.

Yet, after 1989, no new national consensus emerged over what ought to be our role in the World. What should we stand for? What should we fight for?

What Dean Acheson had said of our cousins in 1962: “Great Britain has lost an empire and has not yet found a role,” was true of us.

What was our role in the world, now that the Cold War was history?

George H.W. Bush took us to war to drive Saddam Hussein out of Kuwait. Soaring to 90 percent approval, he declared America’s new role was to construct a New World Order.

Those who opposed him, Bush acidly dismissed in Hawaii on Dec. 7, 1991, the 50th anniversary of Pearl Harbor:

“We stand here today on the site of a tragedy spawned by isolationism. … And it is here we must learn – and this time avoid – the dangers of today’s isolationism and its … accomplice, protectionism.”

Neither Bush nor his New World Order survived the next November.
Then came payback for our sanctions that had brought death to thousands of Iraqis, and for the U.S. bases we had foolishly planted on the sacred soil of Saudi Arabia – Sept. 11, 2001.

George W. Bush reacted by launching the two longest wars in our history, in Afghanistan and Iraq, and announced that our new role was to “end tyranny in our world.”

The Bush II crusade for global democracy also fizzled out.

Barack Obama tried to extricate us from Afghanistan and Iraq. But he, too, failed and got us into wars in Yemen and Syria, and then started his own war in Libya, producing yet another failed state.

What does the balance sheet of post-Cold War interventions look like?
Since 1991, we have lost our global pre-eminence, quadrupled our national debt and gotten ourselves mired in five Mideast wars, with the neocons clamoring for a sixth, with Iran.

With the New World Order and global democracy having been abandoned as America’s great goals, what is the new goal of U.S. foreign policy? What is the strategy to achieve it? Does anyone know?

Globalists say we should stand for a “rules-based world order.” Not exactly “Remember the Alamo!” or “Remember Pearl Harbor!”

A quarter century after the Cold War, we remain committed to 60-year-old Cold War alliances to defend scores of nations on the other side of the world. Consider some of the places where America collides today with nuclear powers: the DMZ, the Senkakus, Scarborough Shoal, Crimea the Donbass.

What is vital to us in any of these venues to justify sending an American army to fight, or risking a nuclear war?

We have lost control of our destiny. We have lost the freedom our Founding Fathers implored us to maintain – the freedom to stay out of wars of foreign counties on faraway continents.

Like the British and French empires, the American imperium is not sustainable. We have issued so many war guarantees it is almost assured that we will be dragged into every future great crisis and conflict on the planet.

If we do not review and discard some of these war guarantees, we shall never know peace. Donald Trump once seemed to understand this. Does he still?

    Does he still?

Hell no. Like most of his other campaign promises that actually significantly effect peoples lives his promise to avoid foreign interventions was just one more fart in the wind.

What can you expect from a narcissistic drama queen. Did you really expect this man would eschew the chance to be the 'greatest war president of all time'?

He says he will depend on advice from his generals (a questionable impulse to my mind but a big change from his campaign where they as group had their turn in the Trump barrel). If that is true (and it remains true for more than a day) then we will have to see what these geniuses have in store for us.

    The Fourth Estate

An excerpt from 24 Big Issues the Elites Are Completely Ignoring

    By Andrew Bacevich
    May 08, 2017

This article first appeared in TomDispatch.

Donald Trump's election has elicited impassioned affirmations of a renewed commitment to unvarnished truth-telling from the prestige media.  The common theme:  you know you can’t trust him, but trust us to keep dogging him on your behalf.  The New York Times has even unveiled a portentous new promotional slogan: “The truth is now more important than ever.” For its part, the Washington Post grimly warns that “democracy dies in darkness,” and is offering itself as a source of illumination now that the rotund figure of the 45th president has produced the political equivalent of a total eclipse of the sun. Meanwhile, National Public Radio fundraising campaigns are sounding an increasingly panicky note: give, listener, lest you be personally responsible for the demise of the Republic that we are bravely fighting to save from extinction.

If only it were so.  How wonderful it would be if President Trump’s ascendancy had coincided with a revival of hard-hitting, deep-dive, no-holds-barred American journalism.  Alas, that’s hardly the case.  True, the big media outlets are demonstrating both energy and enterprise in exposing the ineptitude, inconsistency, and dubious ethical standards, as well as outright lies and fake news, that are already emerging as Trump era signatures.  That said, pointing out that the president has (again) uttered a falsehood, claimed credit for a nonexistent achievement, or abandoned some position to which he had previously sworn fealty requires something less than the sleuthing talents of a Sherlock Holmes.  As for beating up on poor Sean Spicer for his latest sequence of gaffes -- well, that’s more akin to sadism than reporting.

Apart from a commendable determination to discomfit Trump and members of his inner circle (select military figures excepted, at least for now), journalism remains pretty much what it was prior to November 8th of last year: personalities built up only to be torn down; fads and novelties discovered, celebrated, then mocked; “extraordinary” stories of ordinary people granted 15 seconds of fame only to once again be consigned to oblivion -- all served with a side dish of that day’s quota of suffering, devastation, and carnage.  These remain journalism’s stock-in-trade.  As practiced in the United States, with certain honorable (and hence unprofitable) exceptions, journalism remains superficial, voyeuristic, and governed by the attention span of a two year old.

As a result, all those editors, reporters, columnists, and talking heads who characterize their labors as “now more important than ever” ill-serve the public they profess to inform and enlighten.  Rather than clearing the air, they befog it further.  If anything, the media’s current obsession with Donald Trump -- his every utterance or tweet treated as “breaking news!” -- just provides one additional excuse for highlighting trivia, while slighting issues that deserve far more attention than they currently receive.

To illustrate the point, let me cite some examples of national security issues that presently receive short shrift or are ignored altogether by those parts of the Fourth Estate said to help set the nation’s political agenda. To put it another way: Hey, Big Media, here are two dozen matters to which you’re not giving faintly adequate thought and attention.

The article goes on to discuss 24 major themes where the media through their failure to report on them act as enablers for the perpetrators. A number of them touch on points made in the Buchanan article.

      Media Bias

The media is as described in Bacevich's article, pitiful. The news coming through the media from both sides of the political spectrum is biased and polarized. However, any intelligent person will recognize that and form their own opinions accordingly.

The only thing as bad as the media is that group of whiny little shits who attempt to use media bias as argument or worse justification.

Those vitiated Trump butt boys who when faced with the inevitable Trump screw up even those he readily admits to try to rationalize or justify or deny his actions using the straw man 'MSM media bias'. Trump screws up? MSM media bias. Trump goes back on a campaign promise? MSM media bias. Trump is criticized for trying to ram legislation through the system without doing the necessary prep work? MSM media bias. He sends his staff out to tell lies and then the next day cuts their legs off? MSM media bias. Anyone who points out the same Trump screw ups that are reported in the NYT or WaPo? A media hack or tool.

The 'media bias' meme, childish bullshit from those who have no other arguments, who lack real excuses or explanations for Trump screws ups, who are too lazy to go find some, who insist on calling black white and white black.

It doesn't take dependence on a biased media to see the many times Trump has screwed up, the many times he failed to get legislation through because of his inexperience, or the many times he has not only failed to come through on the promises he made in the campaign but has actually moved in the opposite direction. It's right there for everyone to see; yet, the Trumpettes don't deny the screws ups. They simply divert falling back on their simplistic and comfortable meme, MSM media bias.

This is all obvious to anyone with eyes to see and ears to hear; yet, the Trumpettes demur. One has to ask if they simply don't see the many times they have been lied to by this man; or, is it they don't care, that they are not embarrassed they voted for this guy, or is it they are only interested in the one thing he has at least tried to come through on since elected, the racist and nativist policies he voiced during the campaign.

But even that's a hard sell in a country of immigrants so the Trumpettes fall back on the simple (and silly) response 'MSM media bias'.

Pitiful. Gee, I think that was the same word I used above for the media.

    Three Cheers for Sarah Sanders
    By Patricia McCarthy

One has to almost like punishment to face the White House Press Corps these days. Ever since President Trump was inaugurated, this 100% liberal Democrat murder of crows sits there each day and harasses Sean Spicer, or as in the last few days, Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Spicer has toughened up since his early days but Sanders, who is temporarily replacing him as he serves his Naval Reserve duty, is a born natural. Like her father, former Gov. Mike Huckabee, she has the gift of strong, plain language, and she is quick on the draw. How anyone endures the tedium of this press corps is a mystery but she seems to revel at the opportunity to push back....

  5. D.C. Swamp drained of one Florida Swamp Creature - Taxes For Thee Not For Me -

Guilty on 18 counts: Former Dem rep convicted for corruption, tax evasion
POSTED AT 10:01 AM ON MAY 12, 2017 BY ED MORRISSEY

A former Democratic Congresswoman faces a potentially long prison sentence after losing in federal court yesterday. A jury found Corrine Brown guilty of wire fraud and conspiracy charges, in a case filed last year by the Department of Justice. Brown got convicted on 18 of 22 counts, four of which involve her tax returns and one for concealing information from her Congressional financial disclosures:

After a historic, nearly 25-year career representing Florida in Congress, former U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown was found guilty on Thursday of taking money from a charity that was purported to be giving scholarships to poor students.

The verdict came after prosecutors outlined a pattern of fraud by Brown, 70, and her top aide that included using hundreds of thousands of dollars from the One Door for Education Foundation for lavish parties, trips and shopping excursions. She was convicted of 18 of the 22 charges against her, including lying on her taxes and on her congressional financial disclosure forms. …

Federal prosecutors said Brown and her associates used One Door to bring in more than $800,000 between 2012 and 2016, including a high-profile golf tournament at TPC Sawgrass. Brown’s indictment said the Virginia-based One Door only gave out one scholarship for $1,200 to an unidentified person in Florida.

Brown remains free on her own recognizance until sentencing in 90 days. She’s looking at what could end up being a de facto life sentence, depending on how the judge crafts the penalties. The fraud convictions would likely get grouped together, but even with that, the base for federal fraud is six years, and the amount of corrupt takings in this case (and the use of a charity front) could push that all the way up to Level 10 on the federal sentencing table, with a 6-12 year stretch minimum. Conspiracy could add another 10 years, but that’s likely to get wrapped up in the fraud convictions. The tax evasion charges are likely to get addressed separately, but for a first-time offender, it seems unlikely that the judge would apply those consecutively rather than concurrently.

The wildcard for Brown will be her status as a member of Congress. A federal judge may very well decide that this is a case where a message has to be sent that those in power will be held accountable for their abuses, rather than have her years of public service used as a mitigating factor, but perhaps it could go the other way around. It seems most unlikely that Brown will stay out of prison at all, nor should she after these convictions. Best guess is that Brown ends up with an effective sentence of 8-10 years at a minimum security facility. At 70 years of age, that may be all she has left.

Brown insists she’s been railroaded by the Department of Justice and plans to appeal. Her legal team will no doubt move to allow her to remain free on bail, but that would be a very unusual outcome for a fraud and corruption case. She’ll almost certainly be making her conspiracy-theory claims from inside prison rather than outside of it.

The “hardcore fighters,” especially the foreign ones within the inner circle of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and his top commanders, will likely remain in Iraq and Syria, and look to join the underground resistance of an “ISIS, 2.0.” In all likelihood, these guerrilla insurgent shards of ISIS will congeal into a clandestine terrorist organization. Besides conducting sporadic raids, ambushes, and, perhaps, spectacular attacks using suicide tactics, these ISIS fighters will rest, rearm, and recuperate.

Hackers exploit stolen U.S. spy agency tool to launch global cyberattack

A global cyberattack leveraging hacking tools widely believed by researchers to have been developed by the U.S. National Security Agency hit international shipper FedEx, disrupted Britain's health system and infected computers in nearly 100 countries on Friday.

Cyber extortionists tricked victims into opening malicious malware attachments to spam emails that appeared to contain invoices, job offers, security warnings and other legitimate files.

The ransomware encrypted data on the computers, demanding payments of $300 to $600 to restore access. Security researchers said they observed some victims paying via the digital currency bitcoin, though they did not know what percent had given in to the extortionists.

Researchers with security software maker Avast said they had observed 57,000 infections in 99 countries with Russia, Ukraine and Taiwan the top targets.

The most disruptive attacks were reported in Britain, where hospitals and clinics were forced to turn away patients after losing access to computers.

International shipper FedEx Corp said some of its Windows computers were also infected. "We are implementing remediation steps as quickly as possible," it said in a statement.

Still, only a small number of U.S.-headquartered organizations were hit because the hackers appear to have begun the campaign by targeting organizations in Europe, said Vikram Thakur, research manager with security software maker Symantec.

A giant carcass found washed up on a beach in Indonesia’s central Maluku province puzzled locals and authorities trying to identify the massive creature.

The massive carcass was found on Hulung Beach on Serum Island on Tuesday night by a local man, the Jakarta Globe reported.

Asrul Tuanakota, 37, said that he initially mistook the huge fleshy blob for a stranded boat, the newspaper reported.

Locals first shared images of the carcass, measuring about 15 metres (50ft) in length, on Wednesday. The animal is believed to have been dead for at least three days before being discovered.

According to local reports, fishermen thought it to be a giant squid, but a coordinator of Indonesia’s Marine and Coastal Resources Management said it was likely to be a whale. Lab tests are underway to confirm the species.

... three marine experts told HuffPost that the animal actually appears to be some sort of baleen whale.

“Giant squid are invertebrates and there are clearly bones visible (jaw, skull, vertebrate) so I am very comfortable saying it’s some type of rorqual whale,” said Regina Asmutis-Silvia, executive director of Whale and Dolphin Conservation.

“Certain species of baleen whales (rorquals) have ‘ventral grooves’ which run from their chin to their belly button. It is stretchy tissue that expands when they feed,” she added.

She identified these grooves in images and also included photos in which she pointed to what she believes are the whale’s jaw bone and skull.

Bear gets inside car near Green Hill Park

ROANOKE CO., Va. (WDBJ7) It's a picture that's getting a lot of attention on social media: a bear sitting in a car in Roanoke County.

      Ryan McClanahan/Provided

The photo was taken by Ryan McClanahan at a home near Green Hill Park Thursday morning. He and his wife say they heard a honk on their car horn and came out to discover it was a bear cub that did it.

      They then called the police.

Officers say the bear caused some damage to the inside of the vehicle.

The window to the car was not broken. Officers think the bear may have actually pulled on the car handle.

Roanoke County Police Officer Chris Thayer said, "You could see there was mist. It was misty, so you could see where he tried to reach for the handle, he opened the handle. Once he got into the car, he locked himself because he couldn't get himself out."

The officer says he eventually took a chance and opened the car door, and the bear ran off into the woods.

The officer says the bear was likely looking for snacks in the car.

  20. Spring Chinook salmon run on Columbia, Snake and Clearwater rivers a bummer this year. Late, slow, small....it's got everybody worried and depressed. Fish and Game has no real explanation.

    :(

In other news out here, an ear of corn went from 25 cents/ear to 50 cents/ear....and now to 63 cents/ear.

    :(

No real idea why this is occurring either.

Price and supply of Maple Bars holding steady, but I'm not supposed to eat 'em.

  22. Is the US government libel for the losses incurred ?

In mid-April, an arsenal of powerful software tools apparently designed by the NSA to infect and control Windows computers was leaked by an entity known only as the “Shadow Brokers.” Not even a whole month later, the hypothetical threat that criminals would use the tools against the general public has become real, and tens of thousands of computers worldwide are now crippled by an unknown party demanding ransom.

The US government has lost control of weapons of mass data disruption and dislocation.

Another Trump Administration disaster, losing these weaponized software packages.
