COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Leader announces transformation after heavy loss to Emmanuel Macron in presidential election.

By NICHOLAS VINOCUR 5/7/17, 9:01 PM CET Updated 5/8/17, 5:19 AM CET

PARIS — French far-right leader Marine Le Pen said Sunday that her National Front party would undergo a “profound transformation” and a top aide said its name would change after a decisive defeat in the presidential election.

“The National Front must also renew itself,” Le Pen told supporters near Paris after projections of the election result showed her losing by 34.5 percent to Emmanuel Macron’s 65.5 percent. “I will therefore start the process of a deep transformation of our movement … I call upon all patriots to join us.”

National Front Vice President Florian Philippot said the party’s name was bound to change as part of the transformation — a possibility that was under discussion during the campaign but never acted upon.

“Marine Le Pen said it clearly: the National Front will change,” said Philippot, a key architect of the party’s anti-European Union position. “It’s going to change into a new political force which, necessarily, will not have the same name.”

Le Pen vowed to overhaul her party as part of a strategy to win as many seats as possible in next month’s parliamentary election.

  6. Trump signs bill outlawing border wall and expanding H-2B visas

President Trump signed a massive $1.1 trillion dollar spending bill that outlawed future construction of a border wall, spends more money on Obamacare and Planned Parenthood, allows a small increase in military spending, and increases the number of unskilled H-2B visas by 120%. Most prominently, Trump's planned border wall expansion, which was authorized in 2006 legislation, is now forbidden to be built by law.
But I do not blame Trump for this.
    1) We are told that Trump signed this legislation, but how do we know this is really the truth? It could be "fake news". Perhaps someone from the "deep state", or a globalist operative, or a shadowy conspiracy figure Alex Jones talks about, impersonated President Trump and signed on his behalf, hoping Trump would get the blame for this bad bill. Fake news is so endemic. How do we know Trump really signed the bill? How do we know Trump is really president? How do you know you are actually reading this? You simply don't. It can all be questioned. You may only be thinking you are reading this, while in reality you are riding an elephant in India at this very moment.
Click here to see the rest of this article
    2) But let's say, for sake of argument, that Trump really did sign this bill outlawing the construction of a border wall, violating the primary promise of the Trump campaign. If he did sign it, it was a stroke of brilliance. I mean, if anyone else had done it I would call it a total betrayal of a main campaign promise. But if Trump does it, it must all be part of a secret, long-term plan that we cannot hope to understand. Perhaps Trump wants to lull the Democrats into a false sense of security. Perhaps Trump knows that come September, or if not September, some later time after September, Trump will give the Democrats a political karate chop which will force them to fund his border wall, and at that point Trump's signing a ban on border walls now will look positively brilliant.
    3) Keep in mind that the legislation that Trump apparently signed contains more than a billion dollars for border security. It even gives Trump permission to re-enforce up to 40 miles of fencing along our 3000 mile border with Mexico. If I were an illegal alien, I wouldn't want to cross the border at any one of those 40 miles once Trump is done building them up! The legislation also allows Trump to build levee walls, to keep undocumented water out of America. We can name them after him, we can call them the "Trump levee walls".
    4) As for all those additional H-2B visas? Once Trump lowers the boom on legal immigration, those will be the first to go! You see, right now Trump is only giving the appearance of giving in on border security and allowing more immigration. But when he springs his trap, just wait and see, it will all be reversed!
    5) Remember that he's only been president for a little over a 100 days! 100 days is not nearly enough time to refuse to sign a spending bill that outlaws construction of a border wall. His Presidency is still young, what's the hurry?
    6) In any event, if Trump's signing of this bill was not part of a greater plan, it's not his fault. It's the fault of his advisors. Blame Ivana Trump for giving birth to Ivanka. Blame Ivanka for falling in love with Jared Kushner. Blame all the Democratic Goldman Sachs advisors in the White House. But don't blame Donald Trump. He's just a passive instrument through which all bad decisions flow. He's not responsible.

After 6 Deadly Islamic Attacks and 130 Deaths in 3 Years – Paris Votes 90% for Macron

    http://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2017/05/6-deadly-islamic-attacks-238-deaths-3-years-paris-votes-90-macron-update2/

The best thing I saw in Europe was when I saw the exit door on my way out, 45 years ago.

It must really be the shits now.

One of the most humorous things I witnessed was two middle ages frogs arguing like hell on a street in Paris. One frog had a huge long piece of French bread, unwrapped, and a couple of bottles of wine under his arm. The other had a book and a magazine. Man, they were going at it. Shouting like hell. Over oolitics, or women, or money I couldn't make out. One of 'em had one of those frog caps on that's supposed to make you sophisticated, not the de Gaul hat, but one of those the professors often wear.

    Ha ha ha

I was hoping they would come to blows.

I was sitting watching at an outdoor cafe in Gay Paee, sipping gin with Jean Paul-Sartre, who was looking in two directions at once, and had a couple of young girls with him.

I eventually wandered over to Harry's New York Bar on the Rue Danou between the Avenue de l'Opéra and the Rue de la Paix and spent the rest of the day drinking whiskey with Quirk. He had a couple of young girls with him, too, just like Jean-Paul.

I noticed there was not a University of Idaho pennant on the wall in Harry's, so I sent them a huge one when I got home. Great big one with Joe Vandal.

Got a nice reply, thanking me, and saying its location on the walls.

Next time you are in Paris please stop by Harry's and let me know if it is still there.

    Here's Harry's:

  10. Venezuelan opposition leader “disappears” in government prison
POSTED AT 10:41 AM ON MAY 8, 2017 BY JAZZ SHAW

If you live in the United States and you loudly and strongly criticize President Trump, you’re invited to effectively become a guest host on MSNBC and your face and voice become well known across the land. In Venezuela, if you loudly and strongly criticize President Nicolas Maduro, you’re invited to take up residence in a heavily fortified prison where you eventually disappear from sight… assuming you’re still even alive.

That seems to be what’s happened to opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez. For those not familiar, Lopez was one the earliest public opponents of Maduro’s regime, speaking out and calling for reforms. His reward for his civic participation was to be locked away in the heavily guarded Ramo Verde prison. And that took place back in 2014, just as a reminder to those of you who might think that Maduro’s tyrannical antics only began recently. For a couple of years he was at least getting visits from his wife and other relatives, but in April of this year Lopez simply disappeared and nobody was allowed to see him. I caught this news from our friend Fausta at Fausta’s Blog. (Still an indispensable resource for all political news from the Latin American world.) Here’s one of the key clues to how things got this bad.

    I posted on Thursday

Following rumours that jailed Venezuelan opposition politician Leopoldo Lopez had been moved from his cell to a military hospital, a government lawmaker showed a “proof of life” video of him in his cell. He had been reported dead earlier.
I posted the video of a very buff young man,

Así está el Sr Leopoldo López, acababa de cenar y ya iba a dormir, pero el show de la derecha lo despertó
    pic.twitter.com/1YC7yyFxRt

    — Con el Mazo Dando (@ConElMazoDando) May 4, 2017
which López’s family has denounced as fake.

Read Fausta’s full coverage at the link because this is a staggeringly awful story, but one of the key elements is the brutal reprisal against Lopez by the government and their attempts to apparently cover it up. More than a month ago, authorities reportedly demanded that Lopez go out from his prison cell and denounce the protests in the streets, hoping to use his appeal among the public to tamp things down. Lopez refused and was allegedly beaten severely, suffering abdominal injuries. Since that time nobody has seen him. When the family demanded “proof of life” the government supplied a video of a young, healthy looking man who apparently wasn’t even Lopez.

So is he alive or dead? The story is finally getting some traction in the MSM, with ABC covering it this week.

Relatives and lawyers of jailed Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez want the Red Cross to verify his health and are seeking to bring President Nicolas Maduro’s government before a Spanish court for alleged terrorism crimes.

Spain’s laws allow judges to take on cases for crimes committed outside of the country as long as the victims are Spanish, although very few have succeeded.

The family’s lawyers said Friday that at least two opposition leaders with Spanish passports are being held in Venezuelan prisons in circumstances similar to Lopez’s.

Lopez’s father and sister also said they doubt the veracity of the video released Thursday by the leader of the ruling socialist party in Venezuela, Diosdado Cabello, in response to rumors spreading online about Lopez’s health.

You’re probably sick of hearing me say it by now, but it remains true. This is how socialism always ends. Repression, violence, death, starvation and riots. And political enemies of the socialist tyrant aren’t simply denounced in public, They are thrown into dark cells and very likely killed with no system of justice in place to ensure a fair trial or humane punishment upon conviction. Venezuela is falling apart before our eyes and its citizens are the ones paying the ultimate price for falling under the shadow of socialism.

GOP Rep. Raul Labrador: “Nobody dies because they don’t have access to health care”
POSTED AT 11:21 AM ON MAY 8, 2017 BY ALLAHPUNDIT

Lots of media hype for this remark this weekend, as it feeds the eternal narrative of the callous, out-of-touch Republican. You know it’s a bad soundbite when it requires an official Facebook Clarification™:

During ten hours of town halls, one of my answers about health care wasn’t very elegant. I was responding to a false notion that the Republican health care plan will cause people to die in the streets, which I completely reject.

In a lengthy exchange with a constituent, I explained to her that Obamacare has failed the vast majority of Americans. In the five-second clip that the media is focusing on, I was trying to explain that all hospitals are required by law to treat patients in need of emergency care regardless of their ability to pay and that the Republican plan does not change that.

You can watch the key snippet in the first clip below or the fuller exchange, posted by Labrador himself, in the second. That yelp from the crowd is … really something. His point is true as far as it goes — if you stagger into the ER, they’ll treat you whether or not you’re insured. The question is how many people don’t go to the ER because they’re not sure how sick they are and don’t want to be stuck with a gargantuan medical bill they can’t pay in order to find out. If you’re uninsured and have a pain in your chest, you can (a) play it safe by getting it checked out knowing that the resulting debt might break you or (b) stay home to save money and try to tough it out, gambling that it’s heartburn and not something more serious. If your gamble doesn’t pay off…

Labrador could have wonked out on them instead, noting that one major study shows that people with Medicaid didn’t have better health outcomes than people who were completely uninsured. That’s a hard sell politically, though: Intuitively, some insurance seems better than no insurance, even to Republican governors. When Quinnipiac asked about the planned Medicaid cuts in the AHCA in its poll in March, things didn’t go well:

Rolling back Medicaid isn’t likely to play well with Senate Republicans either so who knows whether it’ll end up in a final GOP bill that lands on Trump’s desk. Labrador himself represents a district in Idaho so he’s probably safe notwithstanding this gaffe, but it’ll be attack-ad material for Democrats all next fall in other districts.

“The sheer craziness of this obsession by Donald Trump with Andrew Jackson and the Civil War is carnival act unlike anything I have ever seen at the White House,” Rather wrote on Facebook.

"Nevermind that Mr. Trump’s knowledge of American history seems below that of most gradeschoolers. These are the rantings of someone who really should be focused on the job of governing."

O'Reilly sought to respond by reading a letter written about Jackson and the Civil War by former President Harry Truman.

"History will tell you however that Old Buck, that's President James Buchanan who is in office right before Abraham Lincoln, was short on decision and had he acted with the firmness of Andrew Jackson, for instance, in his dealing with the problems of the South the war between the states might well have been averted," Truman wrote in 1952.

"Trump was right," O'Reilly said. "Andrew Jackson would not have tolerated any secession movement at all and would have moved federal troops much faster into the problem situations. James Buchanan, Old Buck, did nothing. He was afraid. And that emboldened the South. End of historical story."

A GLOBAL cool down will “march in with vengeance” to usher in a 100-year mini-ice age that could freeze over the River Thames, climate scientists told Daily Star Online.

Is there going to be ANOTHER ice age?

      Play VIDEO

Experts told Daily Star Online planet Earth is on course for a “Little Age Ice” within the next three years thanks to a cocktail of climate change and low solar activity.

Research shows a natural cooling cycle that occurs every 230 years began in 2014 and will send temperatures plummeting even further by 2019.

Scientists are also expecting a “huge reduction” in solar activity for 33 years between 2020 and 2053 that will cause thermometers to crash.

Both cycles suggest Earth is entering a global cooling cycle that could have devastating consequences for global economy, human life and society as we know it.

If predictions of the world-wide big freeze come true, the plot to 2004 film The Day After Tomorrow would not be far from reality during winter.

  20. In The Dharma Bums, Kerouac describes his meeting with a spiritual hobo on the train between Santa Barbara and SLO. Dharma wasn’t written until many years after Kerouac stayed in SLO, but already he was seeking out the company of bums. Kerouac wrote a lot in 1953 about living simply and herding goats, but conceded, “Most of these observations arise from the fact that I can’t get a woman anyhow—‘too bashful,’ too ‘scowling’—”

He wrote increasingly of settling on a simple life, of “celibacy”—which meant to him giving up trivial things like gum chewing, not sex. The two life paths before him, as he saw it, were the Fellaheen life of simplicity, or the American life of decadence. If Kerouac was following his own dharma, the following passage explains a bit about what he eventually chose, and why writing exactly what he felt in the moment was the only truth.

    1953
    Fellaheen vs. America
Be decadent, work in US &
    Have a Fellaheen Homestead too

    All I want
Is love when I want it
    Rest when I want it
    Food when I want it
    Drink when I want it
    Drugs when I want it
    The rest is bullshit
    I am now going out
    to meditate in the
    grass of San Luis Creek
    & Talk to hobos &
    Get some sun & worry
    Where my soul is going
& What to do & why
    as ever & ever shit

From his window, Kerouac could watch the young girls walking home from school, and he noted the way the cement sparkled, and the way the railroad tracks glistened with dew in the mornings. Despite what he told his mother about living in SLO, by May Kerouac was restless again.

He hopped a ship out of San Francisco, hopped off at New Orleans and got inspired again. In the fall he wrote The Subterraneans.

    1. The French Government is even more incoherent than our own.

I know this tests the imagination but it's true.

  23. NEW YORK (AP) — A best-selling novelist is imagining how Hillary Clinton's life might have turned out had she never married Bill Clinton.

Random House announced Monday that Curtis Sittenfeld will tell the story from the point of view of Hillary Rodham.

In real life, the former first lady did turn down Bill Clinton's marriage proposals at first before agreeing to marry. In the novel, not yet titled, she turns down Clinton once and for all, then goes on with her life.

Obama interfering with France's election is a wonderful thing.

    Simple Logic.

Who is this Curtis Shittenfeld character ?

Sounds to me like he's got, like Quirk and Ash, too much time on his hands

      France chooses submission
      By Carol Brown

On Sunday, the people of France voted overwhelming for their demise. Of course, that’s not what they think they voted for. But it is.

They think they voted for “inclusion,” “fairness,” “diversity,” and all the rest of the hogwash served up by the leftist/globalist/communist/islamo-fascists because hogwash is a favorite dish among useful idiots.

But make no mistake, the French people voted to assure their ruin by electing a candidate who doesn’t even believe there’s such a thing as “French culture.” Because, of course, France is “diverse.”

      Hey, no kidding.

France’s diversity includes a massive uptick in violence, including rape (here, here, here, and here), thanks to their new friends from Islamic lands....

So the French voted for more murder and mayhem....
