If Donald Trump Can Continue to Show America What He Did In Mexico City, That He Can Be Presidential, He May Just Become President

BUCHANAN

ELECTION 2016

CONQUISTADOR TRUMP

Pat Buchanan: Gnashing of teeth at New York Times testifies to candidates triumph

In accepting the invitation of President Enrique Pena Nieto to fly to Mexico City, the Donald was taking a major risk. Yet it was a bold and decisive move, and it paid off in what was the best day of Donald Trump’s campaign.

Standing beside Nieto, graciously complimenting him and speaking warmly of Mexico and its people, Trump looked like a president. And the Mexican president treated him like one, even as Trump restated the basic elements of his immigration policy, including the border wall.

The gnashing of teeth up at the New York Times testifies to Trump’s triumph:
“Mr. Trump has spent his entire campaign painting Mexico as a nation of rapists, drug smugglers, and trade hustlers. … But instead of chastising Mr. Trump, Mr. Pena Nieto treated him like a visiting head of state … with side-by-side lecterns and words of deferential mush.”

As I wrote in August, Trump “must convince the nation … he is an acceptable, indeed, a preferable alternative” to Hillary Clinton, whom the nation does not want.

In Mexico City, Trump did that. He reassured voters who are leaning toward him that he can be president. As for those who are apprehensive about his temperament, they saw reassurance.

For validation, one need not rely on supporters of Trump. Even Mexicans who loathe Trump are conceding his diplomatic coup.

  • “Trump achieved his purpose,” said journalism professor Carlos Bravo Regidor. “He looked serene, firm, presidential.” Our “humiliation is now complete,” tweeted an anchorman at Televise.
  • President Nieto’s invitation to Trump “was the biggest stupidity in the history of the Mexican presidency,” said academic Jesus Silva-Herzog.
  • Not since Gen. Winfield Scott arrived for a visit in 1847 have Mexican elites been this upset with an American.
  • Jorge Ramos of Univision almost required sedation.

When Trump got back to the States, he affirmed that Mexico will be paying for the wall, even if “they don’t know it yet.”

Indeed, back on American soil, in Phoenix, the Donald doubled down. Deportations will accelerate when he takes office, beginning with felons. Sanctuary cities for illegal immigrants will face U.S. sanctions. There will be no amnesty, no legalization, no path to citizenship for those who have broken into our country. All laws will be enforced.

Trump’s stance in Mexico City and Phoenix reveals that there is no turning back. The die is cast. He is betting the election on his belief that the American people prefer his stands to Clinton’s call for amnesty.

A core principle enunciated by Trump in Phoenix appears to be a guiding light behind his immigration policy.

“Anyone who tells you that the core issue is the needs of those living here illegally has simply spent too much time Washington. … There is only one core issue in the immigration debate, and that issue is the well-being of the American people. … Nothing even comes a close second.”

The “well-being of the American people” may be the yardstick by which U.S. policies will be measured in a Trump presidency. This is also applicable to Trump’s stand on trade and foreign policy.

  • Do NAFTA, the WTO, MFN for China, the South Korea deal and TPP advance the “well-being of the American people”? Or do they serve more the interests of foreign regimes and corporate elites?
  • Some $12 trillion in trade deficits since George H.W. Bush gives you the answer.
  • Which of the military interventions and foreign wars from Serbia to Afghanistan to Iraq to Libya to Yemen to Syria served the “well-being of the American people”?
  • Are the American people well served by commitments in perpetuity to 60- and 65-year-old treaties to wage war on Russia and China on behalf of scores of nations across Eurasia, most of which have been free riders on U.S. defense for decades?

Trump’s “core issue” might be called Americanism.

Whatever the outcome of this election, these concerns are not going away. For they have arisen out of a deeply dissatisfied and angry electorate that is alienated from the elites of both parties.

Indeed, alienation explains the endurance of Trump, despite his recent difficulties. Americans want change, and he alone offers it.

In the last two weeks, Trump has seen a slow rise in the polls, matched by a perceptible decline in support for Clinton. The latest Rasmussen poll now has Trump at 40, with Clinton slipping to 39.

This race is now Trump’s to win or lose. For he alone brings a fresh perspective to policies that have stood stagnant under both parties.

And Hillary Clinton? Whatever her attributes, she is uncharismatic, unexciting, greedy, monkish, scripted and devious, an individual you can neither fully believe nor fully trust.

Which is why the country seems to be looking, again, to Trump, to show them that they will not be making a big mistake if they elect him.

If Donald Trump can continue to show America what he did in Mexico City, that he can be presidential, he may just become president.

Watched the Trump / Nieto news conference.

Trump spoke respectfully and as if he was already president.

Trump’s speech was substantial but Nieto scrambled a bit realizing that Trump was speaking as if he were in office and Nieto went out of his way to say he invited Clinton as well.

I give Trump an “A” for his political audacity, a “B+” for delivery and an “A+” for holding to his convictions and not doing the usual political weasel.

  4. I'D SAY HE SHOULD BE AWARDED THE MEDAL OF FREEDOM

The Romanian hacker who first exposed Hillary Clinton's use of personal email for government business was sentenced by a federal judge Thursday to 52 months in prison -- and in a surprising development, Romanian authorities now want the 44-year-old “Guccifer,” who continues to cooperate with U.S. investigators, sent home "right away."

The hacker, whose real name is Marcel Lehel Lazar, breached the AOL account of longtime Clinton confidant Sidney Blumenthal in 2013, and posted online the Clintonemail.com address. It was this revelation that ultimately led to the identification of Clinton’s personal account and multiple servers, where sensitive government records were transmitted along with personal communications and Clinton Foundation business.

Lazar, looking alert and with neatly trimmed hair, appeared in the Alexandria, Va., courtroom for the 35-minute hearing before U.S. District Judge James C. Cacheris. Prosecutors said the hacker took responsibility for his actions but showed no remorse for accessing the private online accounts of at least 100 Americans, and causing the public release of their information.

His high-profile victims include Dorothy Bush Koch, the sister of former President George W. Bush; former Secretary of State Colin Powell; and Blumenthal, among others. After breaching Powell's account, Lazar said he identified Blumenthal in the contact list and successfully targeted him. Court documents filed Monday by the government say by "the defendant's own estimate, his quote 'success rate' at gaining entry into private accounts was only 8-10 percent of his attempts."

Lazar said he used a color-coded system to show which accounts were successfully breached. “From what I remember I was using red for accounts I hacked, orange for the ones I could hack, and green for the ones I tried to hack and was not able to,” he said, according to a heavily redacted FBI interview released by the court on Monday.

Lazar is not a programmer, but appears to have a strong understanding of social networks and did extensive research on his targets, using publicly available biographical information, a cell phone and an old computer to successfully guess security questions to reset the account passwords.

  6. WASHINGTON—A new set of Hillary Clinton emails shows how politics, diplomacy and philanthropy would periodically converge during her tenure as secretary of state, with top aides drawing on Clinton Foundation contacts to cope with crises facing the U.S. government overseas.

A batch of emails released Thursday by the conservative advocacy group Judicial Watch, which received the documents from the State Department under a court order, includes an exchange from July 2009 involving Clinton Foundation official Douglas Band. In the exchange, Mr. Band asked Mrs. Clinton’s senior deputy, Huma Abedin, for diplomatic passports for himself and two others, saying theirs had lapsed. Ms. Abedin wrote back, “OK” and “will figure it out.”

Officials on Thursday said the passports were tied to a humanitarian mission: former President Bill Clinton’s trip to North Korea later that summer to help free captive journalists. The passports were never granted. Instead, the North Koreans agreed not to stamp the passports of Mr. Clinton and the aides, including Mr. Band, who traveled with him to help free Euna Lee and Laura Ling. A person familiar with the matter cited concerns about having a North Korean stamp on individual passports.

A previous cache of emails released last month showed Mr. Band seeking a meeting between Mrs. Clinton and the crown prince of Bahrain, calling him a “good friend of ours.” The Kingdom of Bahrain has donated between $50,000 and $100,000 to the foundation.

Critics have said such contacts underscore how the Clinton Foundation enjoyed special access to the highest reaches of the State Department during Mrs. Clinton’s watch. Now, in the final stretch of the presidential bid, Mrs. Clinton is facing growing scrutiny over the entanglements between the foundation and her work as the nation’s top diplomat.

    BUT HOLD ON...

It started with the visit to flood-ravaged Louisiana three days after the worst disaster to hit the U.S. since Superstorm Sandy. President Obama dithered on Martha's Vineyard, not even making a public statement on the devastation. Hillary Clinton — in-between multiple million-dollar fundraisers across the country — only issued a statement indicating she didn't want to tour the area until she was sure it wouldn't disrupt recovery efforts (now 20 days later, she still hasn't gone).
Enter Trump, who, along with running mate Mike Pence, stole the media spotlight and even received generally favorable reviews (a rarity) after a Friday trip to the state.

Again, optics: Obama stayed on vacation. Clinton issued a terse statement. Trump got on a plane and surveyed a situation firsthand.

Trump won the week as a result. And the RCP average shrank from Clinton ahead by 7.9 points to just 5.7.

Week 2 saw more negative news for Clinton in the form of The Associated Press's disastrous report showing more than half of her non-governmental meetings as secretary of State were with donors to the Clinton Foundation.

Even Trump — who time and again would muffle bad news for Clinton with his own comments or actions at the time drawing attention back to him by a clicks-and-ratings obsessed media — didn't step on Clinton's bad week.

But Week 3 — this week — appears to be another winner for Trump. The visit to Mexico to meet with its president, a risky proposition but one a trailing challenger had to make in an attempt to look presidential, paid off big.

If there is no bubble in the equity markets then they should withstand a rising interest rate. Politically, though, do you want to risk being the one that popped the bubble? I'm guessing they'll keep rates low until they can't anymore.

Healthcare costs affect a large part of the population.

The costs of education affect a large part of the population.

Stagnant wages affect a large part of the population.

The FEDs mandate used to be to concentrate on stable interest rates and full employment. Under Yellen and her predecessors it has gone all 'supply side' and trickle down. Now, the stock market has been elevated above the other two under the assumption that what is good for the market is good for wall street is good for business and that these companies will take those profits they are making and invest it and once that investment is in place 'demand' will suddenly appear. Bubblegum and bullshit. The 'field of dreams' philosophy. The economist view. Business owners know better.

The FED has been using the same tactic for the last 8 years. The FED's balance sheet has stopped growing but it hasn't been reduced. QE is alive and well. The only people that have made any progress are the people at the top. Lots of people don't have the money to invest in the market and many more are too scared to after what they lost in the last go round. Yet, the FED keeps pushing risk.

The FED shot it's last bullet years ago.

Eventually, they will have to raise rates. They can do it gradually or the markets will end up doing it for them.

A .25 rate hike once a year hardly presages Armageddon.

What I'm saying is that it's not going to make a difference in the short run and in the long run it will be beneficial.

A quarter percent rate hike will have no affect on the issue of stagnant wages, a problem that has continued for the last 30 years through low and high rate environments. That trend has continued over the last 8 years with extremely low interest rates.

On Twitter, Sklar noted that the forms also bar volunteers from criticizing Trump’s brands, disclosing anything personal about Trump (including his taxes), or from even employing people who work for Hillary Clinton’s campaign. (That last one’s illegal, Sklar says.)

    By Crashing Vor
    Friday Sep 02, 2016 · 9:23 AM CDT

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has run an unusually cheap campaign in part by not paying at least 10 top staffers, consultants and advisers, some of whom are no longer with the campaign, according to a review of federal campaign finance filings.

Those who have so far not been paid, the filings show, include recently departed campaign manager Paul Manafort, California state director Tim Clark, communications director Michael Caputo and a pair of senior aides who left the campaign in June to immediately go to work for a Trump Super PAC.

While this should surprise precisely no one who’s paid the least bit of attention to Himself’s business career, it is far from the norm in the business of running political campaigns, particularly those playing in the biggest of big leagues.

Among the stiffees listed are Manafort, Rick Wiley, Barry Bennett, Rick Gates and the latest hand on the good ship Himself, Ms. Conway.

One of the 10 who were unpaid, Michael Caputo, told a Buffalo radio station in June after he resigned from the campaign, that he was not volunteering. Rather, he said he just had not gotten paid. Caputo confirmed to Reuters on Thursday that the Trump campaign has still not paid his invoices.

So, how’s it feel, Team T? You starting to understand what those cabinet makers and maintenance contractors in Atlantic City are so pissed about now?

FBI interview: Hillary said no biggie if SECRET/NOFORN data got exposed? More Hillary: Are pending drone strikes sensitive information?

posted at 2:01 pm on September 2, 2016 by Ed Morrissey

Earlier today, the FBI released its investigative notes on the Hillary Clinton e-mail scandal, including its notes on their interview of Hillary in June. It makes for an interesting read, and a couple of eye-popping moments. For instance, agents showed Hillary the e-mails containing information that investigators had verified had been classified at the time of transmission, including Top Secret/SAP — programs so sensitive that even their names were classified. According to pages 26-7 of the first part of the 302, Hillary told them that she believed that the information wasn’t classified, and was not a problem even if the data had gotten into the hands of foreign governments:....

  23. Clinton campaign blasts Trump's pay-to-play scandal

    By Laura Clawson

The Clinton campaign lays out the contrast between what Donald Trump—with an eager assist from media outlets like the New York Times—has been falsely accusing the Clinton Foundation of doing and what the Trump Foundation really did do:

"Donald Trump has been falsely attacking the charity run by President Clinton when it is Trump's own Foundation that has been caught in an actual pay-to-play scandal.

"While the Clinton Foundation has received the highest ratings from independent charitable watchdogs, Donald Trump's use of foundation money to donate to the Florida Attorney General actually broke the law.

Worst of all, it appears the payment may have been intended to stave off an investigation into the sham Trump University that has ripped off unsuspecting students.

"Donald Trump has no standing whatsoever to question the Clinton Foundation, which works to make AIDS and malaria drugs more accessible, when it's been proven he uses his own foundation to launder illegal campaign donations."

Look for the traditional media to jump on this contrast sometime around the fifth of never. What does not suit the narrative does not make the headlines.

“This style of flying was being done by only the most advanced and experienced jumpers, but it coincided with small helmet cameras becoming accessible and affordable, as well as the rise of social media. Suddenly every jumper had a camera and wanted to show their footage and it had to be more and more impressive to get a positive reaction from others.”

Like Brennan and others, Davis identifies overconfidence as a key issue. “The recent spike in fatalities is a reflection of many different things, all involving decision making: overconfidence and a desire to continuously push (and get closer and closer to terrain, and then show footage of it) or lack of experience and/or understanding of consequences and mountain environments.”

Mexican President Says He Made Trump Pay for Lunch

MEXICO CITY (The Borowitz Report)—The war of words between Donald J. Trump and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto continued on Thursday as Peña Nieto vehemently asserted that he made the Republican Presidential nominee pay for lunch during his visit to Mexico City.

“As soon as we sat down to order, I made it very clear that I had no intention of paying for lunch,” Peña Nieto said. “And when the check arrived, I made absolutely no move to pick it up.”

To support his claim, Peña Nieto tweeted out a photo of himself seated at a table with an aggrieved-looking Trump, who appears to be placing an American Express card on top of a restaurant check.

Responding to the Mexican President’s claim, the Trump campaign issued a statement of its own. “As anyone who has read ‘The Art of the Deal’ knows, Donald J. Trump is a master negotiator,” the statement began. “While he did pay for Peña Nieto’s lunch, he extracted a commitment from the Mexican President to pick up the check the next time they go to dinner. It’s a well-established fact that dinner is far, far more expensive than lunch. Yet again, Donald Trump entered into a negotiation and won big.”

Minutes after the Trump campaign released its statement, Peña Nieto took to Twitter again, where he indicated he had “no intention” of ever having dinner with Trump.

    And so it goes.

  46. Absolute, Categorical Lies

    Sep 12, 2016 | By Stephen F. Hayes

On March 10, 2015, Hillary Clinton told reporters at a rare press conference that she had “absolute confidence that everything that could be in any way connected to work is now in the possession of the State Department."

No parsing required. Absolute confidence, she said. In any way connected to work.

On August 8, 2015, Clinton submitted a signed declaration to the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., swearing "under penalty of perjury" that she'd directed all emails that "were or potentially were" work-related be turned over to the State Department.

Emphatic. Were or potentially were related to her time as secretary of state.

Then on October 22, 2015, Clinton testified under oath before the House Select Committee on Benghazi. "I provided the department, which has been providing you, with all of my work-related emails—all that I had."

Unqualified, absolute. All that I had.

In May of this year, Clinton told ABC News: "I have provided all of my work-related emails, and I've asked that they be made public, and I think that demonstrates that I wanted to make sure that this information was part of the official records."

Categorical. All of my work-related emails.

Clinton used such unequivocal language on purpose, of course. It was meant to convey certitude about her disclosure of work-related emails, to signal to voters (and reporters) that she was unafraid of being contradicted and, most important, that she had nothing at all to hide.

We know now that her claims were false.

FBI Releases Notes From Hilary Clinton Interview

A report by the State Department's inspector general concluded that Clinton had not turned over any of the work-related emails she sent in her first three-plus months on the job, between January 2009 and April 2009. The Defense Department found 19 emails Clinton and General David Petraeus exchanged that were not included in her production to the government. The Benghazi committee uncovered a batch of undisclosed work-related emails between Clinton and Sidney Blumenthal, a longtime Clinton adviser who wrote to share privately sourced intelligence on Libya and other pressing State Department matters. (At the time of their correspondence, the Clinton Foundation was paying Blumenthal $10,000 per month to serve as a consultant.)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It was clear long ago that Hillary Clinton and her team did not, in fact, turn over all work-related emails to the State Department. And in July, we learned that the number of missing work-related emails was exponentially higher than previous reports had suggested. FBI director James Comey stunned even reporters who had long worked on the story when he disclosed just how many Clinton had failed to produce.

"The FBI also discovered several thousand work-related emails that were not among the group of 30,000 emails that were returned by Secretary Clinton to State in 2014. .  .  . It's also likely that there are other work-related emails that they did not produce to State and that we did not find elsewhere and that are now gone."

How could this happen? Comey concluded that Team Clinton did not intentionally withhold the emails and may well have just missed them because their search wasn't comprehensive enough.

We are skeptical. Is it possible that a search of 60,000 messages might somehow miss a few work-related emails? Sure. A few dozen? Plausible. But several thousand? In a search conducted shortly before Hillary Clinton would launch her presidential campaign and conducted by people employed to protect her interests? Dubious.

Then, this past week, we learned that there was yet another set of work-related emails Clinton had failed to produce. Up to 30 emails related to Benghazi were among those Clinton deleted from her private server. We haven't yet seen those latest emails. The Clinton campaign is downplaying their significance, arguing that they may well be duplicates of earlier emails posted by the State Department. Perhaps. But there's little reason to take their word for it. Given that the inquiry into Clinton's emails grew out of the investigation into the Benghazi attacks, one might expect that anyone searching for work-related emails would have included Benghazi as one of the most important search terms. Anyone searching for work-related emails whose goal was to find them, anyway.

It doesn't take much guesswork to understand why Hillary Clinton set up a private email server and why she has lied so aggressively ever since: She didn't want her emails available to the American people.
