I Don’t Give a Crap that Prince Died

When we mourn the passing of Prince but not 500 migrants, we have to ask: have we lost all sense of perspective?

Robert Fisk

Has something gone adrift within the moral compass of our ‘news’ reporting?  In the past week, 64 Afghans have been killed in the largest bomb to have exploded in Kabul in 15 years.  At least 340 were wounded.  The Taliban set off their explosives at the very wall of the ‘elite’ security force – watch out for that word ‘elite’ – which was supposed to protect the capital.  Whole families were annihilated.  No autopsies for them.  Local television showed an entire family – a mother and father and three children blown to pieces in a millisecond – while the city’s ambulance service reported that its entire fleet (a miserable 15 vehicles) were mobilised for the rescue effort.  One ambulance was so packed with wounded that the back doors came off their hinges.

But Prince also died this week.

Now Afghanistan is the country to which we and our EU partners are happily returning refugees on the grounds that Kabul and its surrounding provinces are “safe”.  It is, of course, a lie – as flagrant and potentially as bloody as the infamous weapons of mass destruction we claimed were in Iraq in 2003.  By then, we had already promised the Afghans – in 2001 – that we wouldn’t let them down.  We wouldn’t forget them as we did after the Soviet war.  A Blair promise, of course, and thus worthless.

There was another story on Afghan television last week, which carried its own dark implications for the future.  A young man called Sabour was convicted of murdering two American advisers and told the court that he had absolutely no regrets.  Afghan social media began to fill with comments in support of the man.  He was “a real Afghan,” said one.  “A true Afghan.”  So much for Afghanistan and its utterly corrupt government and our continued claim that we support this bogus administration and that our advisers are there to produce, well, not ‘Jeffersonian democracy” – as the Americans coyly admitted in 2003 – but at least stability.

But Prince also died this week.

Then there was the latest Mediterranean catastrophe.  Up to 500 refugees and migrants were believed to have drowned after refugees from a small vessel sailing out of Libya were transferred onto a larger boat on which Egyptians, Ethiopians, Somalis and Sudanese were traveling.  The survivors were landed in Greece, some having seen their families drown.  But there were no pictures of the sinking.  No autopsies for them, of course.  No dead little Aylan Kurdis were washed up on a soft beach for the cameras.  They simply drifted straight down to the depths of the ocean to join the other thousands of skeletons who never made it to Europe.  Do not reflect that five hundred lives is almost exactly one third the total passenger deaths on the Titanic.  Do not mention that another million human beings are likely to choose this Mediterranean passage now that we are closing the straits between Greece and Turkey.

Because Prince died this week.

Migrants' desperate boat journeys to Europe

No, I don’t begrudge those who mourn this brilliant musician and the social revolution he represented.  The ‘Purple Rain’ ‘superstar’ also had fans across the Middle East.  There are Arab Facebooks aplenty today expressing their sorrow at his death.  But I do wonder if we are going too far.  When network television presenters are expressing their condolences to the mayor of Minneapolis and the Eiffel Tower has turned purple, there must surely come a time when we ask ourselves if our sense of priorities has not lost all perspective.  Could not one of those three dead children in Kabul have become a ‘Prince’?  Or the children among the five hundred souls on the sinking Mediterranean boat?  Could not he or she have become a ‘superstar’?  How about a few presenters expressing their sorrow for their deaths, too?  The colour would be black instead of purple, of course.  The Eiffel Tower lights would have to be switched off.

But this will not happen.  Because ‘Prince’ died this week.

    Hardly.

At least, Fisk recognizes the talents of Prince and the fact that 57 is too young for anyone to die. Actually, in watching various news stations today I was surprised there weren't that many mentions of Prince. I had expected CNN would have kept it going 24/7 for a week.

But back to the point, the two are unrelated. Fisk is right regarding our priorities but it has nothing to do with Prince. If Prince hadn't died do you think there would have been more coverage? I doubt it.

The American public isn't interested in Afghanistan or the ME. Why should they be? They have no stake in the game. The politicians and the generals do their thing and the public gets on with their lives.

The only time the public complains is if a particular war goes on too long and we are not winning. Even then, it doesn't take much, a promise to get out soon for instance, and the public s satisfied, at least, for a while. If Washington wanted to carry on with the 'long war' and never have a complaint, all they would need to do is plan better and just have an endless progression of tidy, short wars. They could wrap up one and then move on to the next with no complaints at all.

We don't to get the public upset by disturbances in the force.

Besides, Game of Thrones is on tonight. And talking of deaths, what about Jon Snow. People have been talking about that for a year and he isn't even real.

Blood and circuses my friends. Blood and circuses.

The save shot temporarily blocks Opioid receptors.

  6. Even if you can’t stand the genres Prince performed and were put off by his outlandish persona, it is an indisputable truth that Prince’s level of talent was not of this world.

The Death Of Prince And The Death of Jesus

Despite reveling in sexually explicit material, Prince also wrote more explicitly Christian lyrics than any mainstream musician of that era not named Bono.

Milo Tosser’ sees players given the chance to throw bodies from a rooftop, with the aim of hitting certain targets on the ground.
Players are permitted five tosses per go, over three unique levels.

The game’s creator described Yiannopoulos as “a gay man who is a staunch advocate for free speech,” making him the perfect candidate to get “tossed”.

“He’s well known for his stances against feminism, PC culture, and Social Justice Warriors,” Michael Garber wrote on the game’s website.
“He has also voiced concern about the treatment of homosexuals in Muslim-dominated countries and considers Islam extremists to be a big problem in today’s world.”
Yiannopoulos – who recently said he would ‘cure’ homosexuality if he could – reportedly “loves” the game.
Although it may seem Garber is glorifying the atrocities gay men often face at the hands of extremists, he says he is in fact trying to do the opposite.
“I wanted to make a game highlighting a serious issue we face in today’s world,” says Garber.
“That issue is fundamental Islam and how it teaches intolerance towards not only homosexuals and women, but also non-Muslims in general.”

Turning to literary matters, I am now reading, at the insistence of my wife, "Far Bright Star" by Robert Olmstead. I'm told it contains an NDE, along with much else.

Mr. Olmstead is obviously indebted to Cormack McCarthy, though more compressed, and Cormack McCarthy was obviously indebted to Ernest Hemingway.

Thus flows some of the currents of our literature....

The moslems need to get over the gays, along with much much else.

Sexual orientation is not genetic, nor is it a choice.

It is rather developmental, and occurs really really really early on in fetal development.

One could throw all the gays in the entire world from Gaza rooftops, and in a generation there would be just as many as before the throwing.

The only way to get rid of this orientation is to exterminate the entire human, no exceptions.

This brings to mind the old saying about throwing out the baby with the bathwater....

Sane folk don't wish to do this.

She didn’t know until she was in her 20s that it was not accidental.

That is extremely hard to credit. It's like she must have been institutionalized all those years. It doesn't make any sense. My entire extended family knew it wasn't 'accidental' the moment it came over the news. It was very clear what happened. And I don't ever recall anything ever about any speculation that it might have been an accident. He put his double barrel shotgun in his mouth and pulled the triggers....

    1. According to the report, Iran also intends to use Hamas in order to liberate the oil-rich city of Kirkuk, which has been under Kurdish control since June, and destabilize the Kurdistan region. The Iranian Revolutionary Guards are planning to deploy forces affiliated with Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis in Kirkuk, from which they would gradually advance toward Kurdistan.

Iran strives to destabilize Iraqi Kurdistan because it views the Kurdistan Regional Government, headed by President Masood Barzani, as a grave threat to its clout in its neighbor, Iraq.

A Peshmerga commander told a-Sharq al-Awsat that in the past few days, Hezbollah forces joined the local Shi'ite Popular Mobilization Units in south Kirkuk carrying heavy weapons and missiles. He explained that Iran aims at capturing Mosul and Kirkuk in order to open a route to smuggle weapons and soldiers to Syria and Lebanon.

Iran's reported plans regarding Hamas are ambitious and would have to overcome the Palestinian organization’s position of neutrality in regard to the regional conflict between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

    The Long War Continues.

To much less fanfare last week, the White House also reportedly loosened the military engagement rules in Syria, so that US servicemen are allowed more leeway to kill civilians as collateral damage in pursuit of Isis. Right-wing Republicans have been clamoring for this policy change for months, despite the risk of it completely backfiring on the US and creating much more terrorists than it kills. At the time, Democrats criticized the likes of Ted Cruz for demanding such a policy. Now there is near silence as the Obama administration has made it a reality.

As he’s broken his promise involving ground troops in Syria, can we expect the same about-face in Libya? “There’s no plan for ground troops in Libya”, Obama said at a press conference in London during his European tour last week. He added: “I don’t think that’s necessary. I don’t think it would be welcomed by this new government. It would send the wrong signal”.

One can imagine it’s only a matter of time before that statement is proven false. Libya is now engulfed in chaos and the number of Isis members there is skyrocketing - largely thanks to the US and allies bombing the country and overthrowing Muammar Gaddafi five years ago. There are already drones flying over the country and special forces have already been in and out in the past year to conduct special forces missions. You can picture administration members soon arguing: we must invade the country to save it from the last time we bombed it.

It’s more or less the same story everywhere. The Iraq War….

We weren’t supposed to have boots on the ground in Syria. Now hundreds are headed

Sadly, it’s only going to get worse. Obama is reluctant to engage in a public discussion about the US’ military involvement in the Middle East. Yet it seems comfortable to fight wars in at least three different countries at once, while also assisting Saudi Arabia in fighting a fourth (which, by the way, is disturbingly strengthening al-Qaida along the way while much of the media ignores it)…

In terms of Article I courts, Obama has made 8 appointments and 2 pending nominations to the United States Tax Court, 3 appointments and 5 pending nominations to the United States Court of Federal Claims, 3 appointments to the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims, 2 appointments to the United States Court of Military Commission Review, and 2 appointments to the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces. He has also elevated two chief judges of the Court of Federal Claims.

On the Article IV territorial courts, he has made two appointments and has elevated one judge to the position of chief judge.

    1. Here’s a poll the Trump camp is going to love

posted at 3:01 pm on April 25, 2016 by Larry O'Connor

It’s almost like polling agencies purposely choose Monday so news agencies are sure to have things to talk about.

Capt. Ed has already broken down the PPP polls for tomorrow’s primary states and I pointed out a new Gallup poll showing how Hillary can barely capture the attention of women in her own party. Those counted beans along with the story of the Cruz/Kasich Concord has been plenty to keep our collective tongues wagging, but this latest national poll from George Washington University deserves attention.

The eyebrow-raising buried lede is found as almost an afterthought in the 5th paragraph (emphasis mine):

In a head-to-head matchup of each party’s frontrunner, Mrs. Clinton leads Mr. Trump by only 3 percentage points nationally (46 to 43; 11 percent undecided). Comparatively, Mr. Sanders fares slightly better against Mr. Trump (51/40/10).

      That’s a shocker.

Considering the deeply contentious and never-ending GOP primary coupled with the #NeverTrump movement and the unorthodox campaign style of the New York billionaire, a poll showing him in a statistical dead heat with Clinton is reason to celebrate on the highest floors of 57th and 5th.

These results fly in the face of the thorough and detailed analysis by many political observers including our Townhall colleague Guy Benson who’s been methodical in his argument that Trump can’t win head-to-head against Team Hillary.

The GW poll does support a major aspect of the #NeverTrump argument: His sky-high unfavorable ratings. Today’s poll puts Trump’s unfavorable at 65%, which is consistent with other recent favorable/unfavorable polls. However, the other candidates aren’t so popular either:

The GW poll found that of the five candidates still in the race for the highest office, only two—Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and Ohio governor John Kasich—have an unfavorable rating below 50 percent, at 44 and 29, respectively. The other three—former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (56 percent), Texas Senator Ted Cruz (55 percent) and businessman Donald Trump (65 percent)—are all mostly disliked.

So, logically, these numbers suggest that perhaps voters are resigned to the fact that their choice in November will be between two highly unlikable candidates and they just can’t decide which one they hate less.

The “he’ll get demolished by Hillary” talking point is probably the strongest argument made by the #NeverTrump camp as they make the case for a contested convention and the selection of a candidate emerging from Cleveland who has to “save the party” despite the fact they didn’t gain the most Republican votes in the primary process. This poll, if it’s not an outlier, may very well begin to erode that argument.

  27. 400 years after his death, here are the books that likely influenced Shakespeare

A portrait of William Shakespeare is seen in the Third Folio, in London, Wednesday, March 16, 2016. The Third Folio is estimated at 300,000-400,000 UK pounds (422,400-563,200 US dollars), includes Pericles for the first time and is illustrated with Shakespeare’s iconic portrait by English engraver Martin Droeshout. William Shakespeare died 400 years ago, but his stock has never been higher. To coincide with the anniversary of the Bard's death, Christie's is selling copies of the first four editions of his plays - a collection the auctioneer's head of books, Margaret Ford, calls "the holy grail of publishing." The four folios are going on display in New York April 1-8 and London April 20-28 before being sold in London on May 25. ()

No writer ever penned a masterpiece without first devoting many hours to reading, and William Shakespeare is no exception. As this weekend marks 400 years since his death, many will once again be returning to their Shakespeare collections to read one of his timeless plays. But it’s also worth remembering the works that Shakespeare read, and the books that lay the groundwork for the Bard’s literary genius.

Though no official records of Shakespeare’s schooling survived, it’s considered “almost certain” that Shakespeare attended grammar school in Stratford-upon-Avon until he was at least 14 years old.

The English philosopher Thomas Spencer Baynes, a professor at the University of St. Andrews in the 19th century, carefully researched the Stratford school curriculum during his time. An excerpt from his article, “What Shakespeare Learnt at School,” can be found online and details much of what Shakespeare is thought to have studied as a child.

Many of these works are still considered classics today, including Aesop’s Fables. Shakespeare and his classmates would also have spent a great deal of time studying the Bible.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. A great deal of Shakespeare’s presumed reading focused on ancient Roman writers who have continued to stand the test of time, including Cato the Elder, Cicero, Ovid, Livy, Virgil, Horace, Juvenal, Persius, Seneca, Plautus, and Lucan.

Other authors Shakespeare is thought to have read in school, such as French theologian Sebastian Castellio and Italian humanist Baptista Spagnuoli Mantuanus, are considered somewhat more obscure today.

In terms of his reading outside of the classroom, scholars have pointed to signs that Shakespeare was inspired by and borrowed from numerous other canonical works, including Edmund Spenser’s Faerie Queen, Chaucer, and Sir Philip Sidney’s Arcadia. The playwright is also thought to have been influenced by John Gower, an English poet who was a friend of Chaucer’s, but is less well remembered today.

Meanwhile, Plutarch’s Lives of the most noble Grecians and Romans, as translated by Sir Thomas North, has been widely studied in relation to Shakespeare, and several of the Bard’s plays are thought to have drawn from this work.

Earlier this week, Jonathan Bate, a Shakespeare scholar and professor of English Literature at the University of Oxford, wrote in The Guardian that he believed Plutarch’s Lives would have been one of the playwright’s three favorite books.

He argued that another would have been The Essays of Michel de Montaigne, translated by John Florio, for its meditations on Roman Stoical philosophy. And finally, Bate believed Shakespeare’s third and foremost favorite would have been Ovid’s Metamorphoses, as translated by Arthur Golding. A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Winter’s Tale, and The Tempest all contain references to Ovid’s work, writes Bates, and the playwright was so attached to the poet that he brought a copy of Metamorphoses on stage for his first tragedy, Titus Andronicus.

Certainly Ovid’s Metamorphoses is considered one of the greatest literary works of all time and is widely thought to be worth reading for its own sake. But for devoted fans of Shakespeare, it couldn’t hurt to peek at Ovid’s epic poem and get a sense of the writing that inspired Shakespeare own drama.

  28. Dog Who Ate Owner Gets Temporary Reprieve From Death Penalty

A Staffordshire bull terrier which ate part of its dead owner may not be put down, despite of the wishes of the dead man's family and Merseyside Police.

Earlier this month District Judge Wendy Lloyd ruled that the animal, known both Buster and Butch, should be destroyed following the grisly discovery last September, when the dog was found to have been feeding on the corpse of its dead owner.

“Dogs are scavengers by nature, but when they can’t get food, they will get anything that is available to them.”

    James Perry, Solicitor

The police supported the owner’s family’s belief the dog posed a danger to the public, the Liverpool Echo reported. James Cullen, representing Merseyside Police, told the at Liverpool Magistrates Court there was a "real risk that this dog, if rehoused, could harm a human being."

The court agreed - but solicitors acting for Freshfields Animal Rescue Centre and the Senior Staffy Club have lodged appeal, giving the animal a temporary reprieve pending a legal hearing.

  31. Harvard Youth Poll: Millennial voters overwhelmingly prefer Hillary Clinton over Trump 61% to 25%.

A new Harvard poll with a sample of 3,000 Millennials (18 to 29) found that Millenials overwhelmingly back Hillary over Trump. It appears that Millennials understand how much better Hillary is than Trump, how toxic Trump is to their particular set of goals and dreams. That isn’t always what the media tells us, with many asking open questions like “Will young voters support Hillary in November?” The implication is that since many Bernie supporters are Millennials and there is such a thing as the “Bernie or Bust” movement among that group, that many young people won’t vote for Hillary. That appears not to be an issue for November.

I had also blogged about a previous Millennial poll conducted by USA TODAY/Rock the Vote, USA Today/Rock the Vote poll: In GE Hillary crushes Trump with Millenials by 33%. 52% to 19%. These newer findings confirm that poll.

MILLENNIAL’S PREFERENCES IN THE GENERAL ELECTION

Young Voters Overwhelmingly Prefer Clinton Over Trump — Poll

Topline: Hillary 61% to Trump 25%

Harvard survey shows Republicans’ disadvantage among young voters is growing

Young voters favor Hillary Clinton for president over Donald Trump by a landslide margin, a new poll of 18- to 29-year-olds finds, and their interest in any Republican for president has dropped significantly over the last year of campaigning.

The new youth poll by Harvard’s Institute of Politics found that when likely voters under 30 were asked about a general election match-up between the two parties’ front-runners, 61% said they would vote for Mrs. Clinton, 25% said Mr. Trump, and 14% were not sure.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The findings underscore how important young voters are to Mrs. Clinton’s coalition, as she tries to maintain the surge of millennial-generation support that propelled President Barack Obama’s election and re-election. It also points to growing trouble Republicans face in wooing millennial voters, who are for the first time in 2016 matching Baby Boomers as a share of the electorate.
A 36% edge for Hillary over Trump. If it stays at that range the youth vote for Hillary in November would best both Obama elections.

Obama won the 18 to 29 vote in 2008 against John McCain by 34%, 66% to 32%.

Obama won the 18 to 29 vote in 2012 against Mitt Romney by 24%, 60% to 36%

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Republicans’ disadvantage among young voters is growing. The poll found that 61% of 18- to 29-year-olds said they preferred a Democrat win the 2016 presidential election, 33% preferred a Republican. That 28-point spread is twice as wide as when the Harvard institute polled young people in spring 2015, when the split was 55% for a Democrat and 40% were for a Republican.
Good news for Democrats is that the party gap is growing leaps and bounds. It was only a 15% spread in Spring of 2015, it has grown to 28% now. Republicans are literally killing themselves with Millennials on messaging and issues. Having a crop of terrible to toxic candidates starting at 17 then whittled down to 3 for the Republican nomination hasn’t helped in that process. Millennials are now very sour on the Republican Party. That is good news not just for the top ticket in November, but also for down ticket candidates.

Democrats continue to have a large and growing advantage among Hispanic and black young voters, with a 55-point and 78-point edge over Republicans, respectively. But Republicans have even lost their past advantage among white youth, which favored the GOP by a 12-point margin a year ago. Now, whites under 30 are about equally split, with Democrats holding a two point edge.
The youth vote is turning strongly towards the Democrats for this general election. We don’t just have a strong advantage with Hispanic and Black young voters, but now even with White young voters, a group that favored Republicans pretty decisively just last year.

A more in-depth analysis of the findings from the actual poll itself, with all crosstabs, here:

Historian David Maraniss notes, in Sunday’s Post, that President Obama came to office with the goal of changing “the trajectory of America” and leaving “a legacy as a president of consequence, the liberal counter to [Ronald] Reagan.”

On the foreign-policy front, he is the anti-Reagan for certain. Reagan defeated Soviet communism and left us a safer world; Obama presided over the rise and metastasis of the Islamic State and left us a far more dangerous one.

Domestically, Ronald Reagan told the American people: “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are ‘I’m from the government, and I’m here to help.’ ” Obama wanted to convince Americans that they were not terrifying. And the way he was going to do it was through the only great liberal legislative achievement of his presidency: Obamacare.

He failed. Even before he leaves office, Obamacare has begun unraveling.

The law was passed over the objections of a majority of Americans, it is still opposed by a majority of Americans — and their opposition has been vindicated.....

    Hillary's New Hashtag: #pigsandcrackers

    By William A. Levinson

A psychological warfare principle that was once equated with magic says that the power to name a thing is the power to control or destroy it. The Allies, for example, named the German general Fedor von Bock "Der Sterber," or "Let's go get killed," for his statement that the function of the German soldier was to die gloriously for the Fatherland. They doubtless did their best to ensure that every soldier under von Bock's command knew it, too.

The ability of a name to convey an entire idea in less than a second is consistent with Sally Hogshead's presentation on fascination, worth watching. The key principle is that when you introduce yourself (or an idea) to another person, you have nine or fewer seconds to fascinate that person and keep his or her attention. This, in fact, prompted me to redesign my business card. Everybody's business card includes contact information along with a short description of what he or she does. I changed mine to a two-sided design to feature a portrait of Henry Ford and the caption "What Would Henry Ford Do?" to convey my expertise on Ford's manufacturing and business system.

    #pigsandcrackers

Hogshead stresses that while you can't find true romance, land a job, or by implication sell an idea in nine seconds, you have roughly this long to earn the chance to make your case. The most effective psychological warfare material recognizes this fact and uses sensationalistic pictures to fascinate the Propaganda Man, or the person we wish to persuade. Today's internet meme and hashtag embody the same principle, and the hashtag #pigsandcrackers will destroy Hillary Clinton's candidacy through its brutal simplicity and honesty.

"Pigs and crackers" was inspired, of course, by the popular cheese and crackers snack, but it worked out amazingly well. A Google search on "pigs and crackers," or even #pigsandcrackers, comes up exclusively with links to Sharpton's racist and anti-police tirade on the first page of the results.

This brings us to a second principle of effective propaganda. The propaganda must first fascinate the viewer, but it must also assure the Propaganda Man of its honesty. The instant we lie to the Propaganda Man, we deserve to lose his trust and his respect, and I personally resent dishonest memes that attack even political figures I dislike. The memes seek to get me to make myself look foolish by forwarding them, and thus making myself a party to the falsehoods.

In this case, however, the Google search on the slogan or hashtag allows the Propaganda Man to verify for himself that Al Sharpton did indeed tell his listeners, "I don't believe in marching! I believe in offing the pigs! Well, they got pigs out here! You ain't offed one of them!" and "I'll off the man. Well, off him! Plenty of crackers walking around here tonight!"

The Propaganda Man can also verify independently that Hillary Clinton has made at least two appearances at Sharpton's National Action Network, where she praised Sharpton and essentially solicited his support for her candidacy. This puts Clinton squarely in the camp of a racist and anti-Semite who has openly advocated the murder of law enforcement officers. She cannot appear with him without legitimizing and mainstreaming him, and therefore "I believe in offing the pigs."
