COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

  1. An French soldier has been detained after a video emerged showing him apparently shooting a arab terrorist in the head as he lay wounded and motionless on the ground.

The arab was soon declared dead. He was one of two attackers who had earlier stabbed another cartoonist in Paris

The French military said the shooting was a "grave breach of French values".
The soldier has not been identified.

"In light of the initial probe into the incident, a military police investigation has been launched," the French army said on Thursday.
The shooting occurred just minutes after two Arab attackers stabbed an cartonist at a office at the Charlie Hebro offices.
The Arab shown in the video was shot and wounded during the attack.

  6. Workers Regain Part of Recession Losses, as Wage Share Rises

The wage share of GDP has recovered close to half of the ground lost in the downturn. Combining economy-wide wages and corporate profits, the wage share fell by 3.6 percentage points between 2007 and 2012.

The data for 2015 show that the wage share has increased by 1.6 percentage points since its trough in 2012. This indicates that a tighter labor market is now allowing workers to achieve some gains at the expense of corporate profits.

This means a huge amount for Federal Reserve Board policy going forward. If the Fed raises interest rates to slow growth and job creation, it can prevent workers from recovering the ground they lost in the downturn.

It is striking that only one presidential candidate, Senator Bernie Sanders, has raised this issue. The others have for some reason chosen not to discuss the Federal Reserve Board and its impact on workers' living standards. (Senator Ted Cruz has discussed the Fed, but said that he wants to bring the gold standard. This would prevent the Fed from taking any steps to boost the economy in a downturn.)

I've been sitting here drinking a cup of coffee and watching a Democratic (Hart, Jackson, Glenn, McGovern, and Mondale) primary debate from 1984 moderated by John Chancellor. Two things were striking about it,

    1. Many of the problems they were discussing in 1984 presage the issues that are being discussed today, jobs, too big too fail (then it was focused on corporate consolidation and monopoly), trade, the size of the military, the Korean airliner issues, etc. Of course, the big difference was that the big foreign policy concern was the cold war with Russia rather than today's concerns with the ME and terrorism.

    2. The debate was civilized compared to the circus we have today. The candidates and the moderator sat in a small semi-circle in comfy chairs. Voices weren't raised. They look relaxed. Quite a bit of joking banter among them. People didn't talk over each other until maybe the last 5 minutes when Mondale and Hart, the front runners, got into a little bantering though voices weren't raised. All in all a rather civilized affair. Quite unlike what we have today.

What I took away from it was that many of the problems we have today also existed 30 years ago but the atmosphere in which they are being discussed has changed, soured, and grown course.

Yellowstone supervolcano eruptions were even bigger than we thought

Yellowstone's geysers and hotpots are 'just the latest in a protracted history of numerous catastrophic super-eruptions that have burned a track along the Snake River eastwards from Oregon to Yellowstone,' says UK geologist.

By Christina Beck, Staff March 26, 2016

A recent study published in the Geological Society of America Bulletin identifies an area of great volcanic activity along the Snake River Plain between Oregon and Yellowstone.

While scientists have long known that the supervolcano now under Yellowstone left a trail of mega-eruptions across the Pacific Northwest, an international research team has found evidence of only 12 distinct eruptions, contradicting earlier theories that the eruptions were more numerous and less extreme.

“The size and magnitude of this newly defined eruption is as large, if not larger, than better known eruptions at Yellowstone,” said the study’s lead author, Dr. Thomas Knott, in a University of Leicester press release, “and it is just the first in an emerging record of newly discovered super-eruptions during a period of intense magmatic activity between 8 and 12 million years ago.”

Scientists used paleomagnetic data, radioisotope dating, and rock and mineral chemistries to identify the size and location of these ancient eruptions.

One eruption, called the Castleford Crossing eruption, produced a volcanic sheet that covers approximately 14,000 square kilometers – an area the size of Connecticut – in southern Idaho.

Knott and his team identified 11 other super explosions that they say were likely similar in size to the well known, massive super explosions at Yellowstone.

“While it is well-known that Yellowstone has erupted catastrophically in recent times,” said Knott, “perhaps less widely appreciated is that these were just the latest in a protracted history of numerous catastrophic super-eruptions that have burned a track along the Snake River eastwards from Oregon to Yellowstone.”

Yellowstone certainly remains volcanically lively. In 2013, a study found that Yellowstone’s “supervolcano” was even larger than scientists had previously believed, with a magma chamber stretching 55 miles long, and 18 miles wide.

If the Yellowstone supervolcano explodes, says the 2013 study, the resulting eruption could be up to 2,000 times as violent as the Mt. St. Helens eruption several decades ago.

In the spring of 2015, scientists discovered an even deeper magma chamber.

The last Yellowstone eruption occurred 640,000 years ago – a blink of an eye in the geologic time scale, compared to the Snake River Plain explosions 8 to 12 million years ago – some remain concerned that this destructive supervolcano is ripe for an eruption.

"Three super-eruptions at Yellowstone appear to have occurred on a 600,000-700,000 year cycle starting 2.1 million years ago," explains the BBC. "The most recent took place 640,000 years ago – suggesting Yellowstone is overdue for an eruption."

This new study, with evidence of 12 volcanoes in about 3 million years, suggests that the Yellowstone supervolcano can erupt catastrophically on a much shorter cycle of about every 250,000 years.

The Al-Nusra Front and Ahrar al-Sham terrorists tried to take control of Sheikh al-Maqsoud area, but they were forced to retreat by the Kurdish fighters.

The Takfiri terrorists sustained heavy casualties and losses in tough battle with the Kurdish forces.

In a relevant development last Monday, the Syrian army repulsed an ISIS attack on areas around the industrial zone Northeast of Aleppo and inflicted more casualties on the terrorists.

"The terrorists attempted to open their way into the areas East of Kafr Sakeer village located Northeast of Aleppo's al-Sheikh Najjar Industrial Zone but were pushed back by the Syrian army troops after sustaining a number of losses and injuries," a military source said.

"The Syrian Army, for its part, carried out a counter attack to win back more regions from the terrorist and managed to kill more militants and destroy a number of ISIS vehicles including Pick-up trucks equipped with heavy guns," the source said.

According to the source, during the operation to repel ISIS offensive in Western areas just outside Kefr Sakeer village, an ISIS suicide attacker was identified and targeted by the Syrian soldiers before he could detonate his explosive belt.

Last Sunday, the Syrian Army and its allies fended off a massive assault by the ISIS terrorists on the government forces' positions in two key villages in Northern Aleppo province and forced the militants to retreat back to their positions.

The ISIS attempts to prevail over the government forces' lines of defense in the villages of Kafr Sakeer and Babbenes near the al-Sheikh Najjar industrial zone were thwarted by the Syrian soldiers who claimed the lives of dozens of terrorists

The French, Americans, Russians are all bombing jihadists on a daily basis, the jihadists (your friends) are being shot...

Why does that make me deluded?

maybe we should do what the French used to do...

      Guillotine?

Or maybe the French Foreign Legion?

Well, it does help not to be too thin skinned here.

On that subject, I've noticed that the old Dougster has kinda of mellowed out lately. Less argumentative. Less bellicose. Riding the wave so to speak. It's a good look for you. I wish I could achieve it myself.

      What's your secret?

    2. The main trouble is, that, whenever Jack "Memorial Day" Hawkins drops in, the temperature in this liquor joint, whether summer or winter, tumbles by about 35 degrees, every time

A little like a disjointed Eskimo jinn has walked in, bringing the Artic winter with him.

The only solution I've found for me is just to take leave to the Casino for awhile.

Just the opposite of when Doug drops by, everything seems warmer and cheerier.

Man, do they have great Chicken Tenders out there !

Remember how pissed you were at Terisita's lies? How she lost all credibility? The same goes for you - you've published so many blatant lies nothing you now say has any credibility.

    3. What gets me about you, Ash, is your lack of basic rationality.

Being a Big Lib you are certainly all for feminism, multiculturalism, and peace.

But you also favor an Arabstinian State in the 'West Bank' which would be, exactly, the opposite of that which you claim to be for....

It would be misogynist, apartheid (no Christians of Jews shall set foot on our land) and militant, highly armed, and aggressive, pledged to forever try to push the Israelis into the Mediterranean Sea.

You so often don't make any sense whatsoever, Ash.

    4. And the gays, Ash.

Certainly you are not a homophobe.

It's not in your liberal script.

You must think of the gays.

They would be butchered like in so many other places in the mid-east, save in Israel.

You would not have stolen your Aunt's honor, nor would you have delivered, to her, a "Death Sentence", by institutionalizing her, to avoid being prosecuted for bank fraud, if you were concerned about your 'children'...

    Want to read the quote?

I turned you in to the AZ FBI for making death threats against me...

    Want to see the quote?

Oh yeah, you bragged that you had a "source" inside the AZ FBI that should you my file! Remember how you said you were a "newspaperman" and how you didn't give a dam about your source who leaked the ongoing investigation?

Jack, be nimble, Jack be quick, Jack misdirects like a lying blowhard he is...

    :)

Hows that stalking of Chocolate Emporium doing? Wrong Jew for over 2 years stalked by Jack "the rat" Hawkins.

    Hey Jack....

Why do you lie, distort and misdirect?

Cant you make a point without resorting to being a shit?

    no?

    LOL

  22. In a Tastleless Tabloid Election, It’s Only Fitting the National Enquirer Now on Center Stage

    by Joe Concha | 10:22 pm, March 25th, 2016

    cruz/trump

When analyzing the latest in this it-can’t-be-more-custom-made-for-cable-news presidential race, the only movie that comes to mind with today’s latest developments regarding Ted Cruz and the National Enquirer is an infamous exchange in 1984’s Ghostbusters on whether or not ghosts actually exist:

Peter Venkman (Bill Murray): “Well, you can believe Mr. Pecker…”

Walter Peck (William Atherton): “My name… is Peck.”

The exchange eventually ends with Venkman “confirming” that Peck is operating without an essential male body part. Fast forward to 2016 and it’s a man named David Pecker — the Enquirer CEO — who is now part of a narrative that has included hand sizes and all the 9th grade innuendo
that predictably followed in front of millions during a nationally-televised presidential debate (we are a long way from “There you go again…”). We’ve also drifted into old nude modeling photos of the wife of the GOP frontrunner and the appearance in general of the spouse of the man chasing him for the nomination. It’s officially the Reality TV election on 24/7 cable news in all of its tabloid glory with plenty of Twitter snark to go around.

So if the Enquirer is now part of the equation.....

    :)

  23. Sanders has clobbered Clinton in Alaska and Washington State.

Left to go today for the Dems:

    Hawaii

They don't seem to take polls in Hawaii, but I'm betting Sanders due to all the young beach bums that hang out there.....IF they can get their heads out of reefer madness long enough to think to go vote...

  25. Deal reached to boost California's minimum wage to $15, avoiding ballot box battle

Lawmakers and labor unions have struck a tentative deal to raise the statewide minimum wage to $10.50 an hour next year and then gradually to $15, averting a costly political campaign this fall and possibly putting California at the forefront of a national movement.

The deal was confirmed Saturday afternoon by sources close to the negotiations who would speak only on condition of anonymity until Gov. Jerry Brown makes a formal announcement as early as Monday.

The minimum wage compromise ends a long debate between the Democratic governor and some of the state's most powerful labor unions. For Brown, it's political pragmatism; numerous statewide polls have suggested voters would approve a minimum wage proposal — perhaps even a more sweeping version — if . . . .
