COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

The US Governments’s War of Terror Against The American Taxpayer and Other Less Fortunates

The AUMF (The “Authorization of the Use of Military Force”) was a bill passed in the immediate wake of 9/11 and authorized the President of the United States to use all “necessary and appropriate force” against those who had aided the terrorists responsible for the attacks. In the nearly 15 years since its passage, the US has found itself involved in a never-ending war on terror, which presents increasingly complex ethical, legal, and strategic challenges.

The U.S. Has Only Been At Peace For 21 Years Total Since Its Birth

In 2011, Danios wrote:
Below, I have reproduced a year-by-year timeline of America’s wars, which reveals something quite interesting: since the United States was founded in 1776, she has been at war during 214 out of her 235 calendar years of existence.  In other words, there were only 21 calendar years in which the U.S. did not wage any wars.
To put this in perspective:
* Pick any year since 1776 and there is about a 91% chance that America was involved in some war during that calendar year.
* No U.S. president truly qualifies as a peacetime president.  Instead, all U.S. presidents can technically be considered “war presidents.”
* The U.S. has never gone a decade without war.
* The only time the U.S. went five years without war (1935-40) was during the isolationist period of the Great Depression.
*  *  *
Here is a graphic depiction of U.S. wars:
And here is the year-by-year timeline of America’s major wars:

In most of these wars, the U.S. was on the offense. Danios admits that some of the wars were defensive.   However, Danios also leaves out covert CIA operations and other acts which could be considered war.
Let’s update what’s happened since 2011:
2012 – War on Terror in Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Syria and Yemen
2013 – War on Terror in Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Syria and Yemen
2014 – War on Terror in Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Syria and Yemen; Civil War in Ukraine
2015 – War on Terror in Somalia, Somalia, Syria and Yemen; Civil War in Ukraine
So we can add 4 more years of war. That means that for 222 out of 239 years – or 93% of the time – America has been at war. (We can quibble with the exact numbers, but the high percentage of time that America has been at war is clear and unmistakable.)
Indeed, most of the military operations launched since World War II have been launched by the U.S.
And American military spending dwarfs the rest of the world put together.
No wonder polls show that the world believes America is the number 1 threat to peace.

  1. No aspect of our current culture seems to be more debased than our “civil” police departments. Case in point:

St. Louis, MO — Nothing says Police State USA quite like a SWAT team raiding a family home and killing their dog because they are unable to pay their natural gas bill.

The woman whose dog was killed and home destroyed by SWAT officers is Angela Zorich, and her story about her police state experience will shock the conscious.

According to a federal lawsuit filed this month, Zorich was the victim of a massive military-style raid and subsequent puppycide. The raid was carried out because police said they needed “to check if her home had electricity and natural gas service.”

“This is an example of police overreaching and using excessive force to get a family out of their house,” said Kenneth Chackes to the Riverfront Times, the attorney who represents Zorich.

According to the lawsuit, on April 25, 2014, St. Louis County Police officers came to her house. Her son cussed at them. They inspected the home’s exterior and placed a “Problem Properties” sticker on the front window.

Days after being publicly shamed and labeled by the St. Louis Police Department as a “Problem,” on April 28, Zorich called them to follow up. She was told by police that she was being investigated for failing to have natural gas or electric service; two violations against city code.

Zorich admitted to the police that she did not have gas, but said that she did have electricity. Zorich asked for another inspection to prove that she had the utilities. The officer told her that was fine, but that the investigation would continue.

The next day, on April 29, 2014, the home of Angela Zorich was raided by multiple officers from the St. Louis County Police Tactical Response Unit.

The Riverfront Times outlines the details of the lawsuit:

Zorich was at home with several family members and her pit bull, Kiya, when a St. Louis County Police Tactical Response Unit burst through the door without knocking, according to her suit. The unit had at least five officers with M-4 rifles, supported by at least eight uniformed officers.

The officers entered so quickly, Zorich’s suit alleges, that Kiya didn’t even have time to bark. A tactical officer fired three shots into the dog, and the dog’s “bladder and bowels released and she fell to the floor.” The dog “was laying on the floor in her own waste and blood struggling to breathe. She had a gaping hole in her chest.”

Zorich claims the officers kept trying to talk to her about the natural gas, but she was focused on her dog, whom she’d raised as a puppy and who (she says) had “never shown agression to any person.”

At one point in the raid, Zorich alleges, an officer pointed his firearm at her son’s head and said “One word, motherfucker, and I’ll put three in you.”

Zorich was subsequently taken into custody at the police station. When she was finally let go and allowed to return to her home, she found to be completely trashed. Beds had been overturned, and items that were once on shelves had been thrown to the floor.

The citations issued to Zorich, which had allegedly justified the heavily militarized raid on her home, were for substandard siding, guard rail, screens, window glass and deck.

A dozen armed men dressed for war, were dispatched to a woman’s home, killed her dog, and kidnapped her because of some moldy wood and her inability to pay her gas bill.

In what world is this considered “justice”?

The apologists will say that Angela Zorich provoked police into this action against her. If she didn’t want to be raided, they will say, she should have just paid her gas bill. The thought of the raid being retaliatory in nature won’t enter their minds.

Named in the lawsuit is the county of St. Louis and two officers, Corey Zavorka and Robert M. Rinck. Her allegations include unlawful seizure and unlawful infliction of emotional distress (for the killing of the dog) and unlawful retaliation.

Hopefully, with her legal team, Zorich gets the actual justice she deserves.

Think of it as a war, if you wish.

It is not a bad analogy.

In the debate over NSA surveillance, it was eerie seeing senator after senator rising and defending government secrecy, even after they themselves were lied to and spied upon by the heads of these agencies, Clapper et al. One even rose and quoted section of the Constitution that he said 'implied' the government's right to secrecy.

In today's world where it becomes more and more difficult to hold any secrets, it also becomes easier and easier to begin to start believing in 'conspiracy theories'. In fact, the time may soon come when 'conspiracy theory' no longer carries the same negative connotation.

    FINALLY!!!

    SARCASM gets its own EMOTICON

    http://mashable.com/2010/01/15/sarcmark/

Now there's a whole new symbol to add to your lexicon, the SarcMark, which looks something like a whirlpool with a dot in the middle (see image above). Here's what the website has to say about the product:

"With the spoken word, we use our tone, inflection and volume to question, exclaim and convey our feelings. The written word has question marks and exclamation points to document those thoughts, BUT sarcasm has NOTHING! In today’s world with increasing commentary, debate and rhetoric, what better time could there be than NOW, to ensure that no sarcastic message, comment or opinion is left behind Equal Rights for Sarcasm - Use the SarcMark."

You can download the SarcMark at the company's website for Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows Vista and mobile devices for use in Word documents, e-mail, instant messaging and more. After downloading, all you have to do is hit "Ctrl" and "." and the mark will appear, instantly giving wry impact to the sentence in question.

The symbol costs $1.99, which seems a small price to pay for conversational clarity.

I plan to try this (although I am not sure it will work in the current format here). Since I have been declared technically illiterate and have never purchased an app in my life this may take a while.

Right now, I have grass to cut and weeds to whack.

  14. PENTAGON—

U.S. military officials said coalition airstrikes are having "a profound effect" on Islamic State militants in Iraq and that the coalition is "taking the enemy off the battlefield in significant numbers."

Lieutenant General John Hesterman, chief of the air campaign, told reporters Friday at the Pentagon that he doesn't believe the Islamic State group is making major advances around Iraq.

"Every now and again they make a tactical advance and then we play it like a strategic victory and it’s not," Hesterman said.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Wednesday the military operation against the Islamic State group has killed more than 10,000 militant fighters in less than a year.

Hesterman agreed that the military operation is taking IS fighters off the battlefield at a "great rate" but said efforts like stopping the flow of foreign fighters may be more significant.

      :o)

What would we expect Hesterman to say, he is leading the air campaign in Iraq. Risking plagiarism charges, General Hesterman also recently said that the US air campaign is pinpoint accurate and the most effective 'in history'.

While admitting that 3 out of 4 air sorties end up with the planes coming back without dropping their ordinance, rather than blame the lack of adequate spotters on the ground, he argues that it is the result of the US being overly cautious in protecting civilians from collateral damage. This despite the fact that Obama has loosened the ROI's when it comes to collateral damage.

But when we inevitably see reports like this,

Witnesses of the strike on Hawija have said it flattened an entire neighborhood and killed dozens of civilians.

we also inevitably get denials like this

The coalition has not seen evidence of civilian casualties in a town in northern Iraq that was targeted by a coalition airstrike on Tuesday, Hesterman said.

which may be true. If you refuse to look, it only follows that you don't see.

And if it appears I am condemning the collateral damage, I am not. I am merely condemning the hypocrisy and lies and the credulity of those will automatically accept without challenge the words of the military (on either side) in the middle of a war.

Sorry, IMO, that opinion doesn't confirm to the facts. You blame Iran for ISIS rather than the people who actually created ISIS to fight Iran. You blame Iran but ignore where the blame actually lies for the atrocities of ISIS. Your view is skewed by your allegiance to Israel.

    3. Quirk, hardly, my love of israel has NOTHING to do with how I see the rise of the butchers that are called ISIS.

Iran has slaughtered 550,000 Iraqis via proxies in Iraq using Shia militias like Sadr and such, now the government of Iraq is a proxy of Iran as well...

Also those ex-saddamer's which was the core that created the ISIS creature (and let's not forget that the saddamer's were quite the shia killers also)

IF Iran had not taken over Iraq and Syria? ISIS would never have formed against is...

the atrocities of ISIS are not being excused in anyway, they are savages.....

However the atrocities of the shia onto the sunni's make the sunnis (at least in this round of killing) look like amateurs.

    4. .

      Ridiculous.

If you don't want Americans killed the safest way to guarantee it is to not go in the first place.

If you are going to go in and spend $2.5 billion in the first 10 months (another Israel on the American tab) in a war projected to go on as far as the eye can see, you have to ask what the fuck is the point.

We voluntarily go into a country where absolutely no one likes us and where when we leave we know that we will be disliked even more, and we do it even though we have no real national interest to protect. We establish a goal that is impossible to achieve and then develop a coalition that can share in that failure. We set restrictions on ourselves that guarantee that failure and then allow the government in Baghdad to dictate what we do there like we are some cheap mercenary force. In doing so, we tie our hands behind our back even further. This is not even to mention such things as ISIS in Syria or our commitment to a unified Iraq even though day that becomes more of a dream.

Baghdad says they don't want any US combat troops there but have no problem allowing Iranian troops in. Then we go further and say we won't even allow US special forces to accompany Iraqi troops into battle and coordinate air strikes. This all for political reasons, so as not to mess up the 2016 election for the Dems.

Sorry, general, we are going to have to ask you to turn in your stars. This is a useless exercise and is doing more to diminish US reputation in the world than it is doing to burnish it.

Frankly, it is the stupidest war I have seen in my lifetime. It is not even a war it is flight training.
