COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Can anyone say that they are surprised that this has happened?

  1. Baltimore has a black Mayor - a total nitwit - a black Police Chief, lots of blacks on the Police Force, and I imagine probably a majority of blacks on the City Council.

    But I'm no longer surprised.

It's become a national pastime - find some excuse, burn part of the town down, and loot the liquor stores and the shoe stores, and the TV stores.......

That video of the guy "Dancing In The Flames" will become famous......

It's all the fault of Cracker.....

  2. As night fell, the transmissions over the police radio were of a city going mad.

“There’s 100 of them in the shoe store. People are even getting out of their cars to go into the shoe store.”

“A group of black males breaking into a grocery store from the rear.”

“No units are to go there alone…. Do we have any other units?... I need at least three or four cars to go there.... Do we have any other units?”

“Is anybody else coming up there?”

    “Male armed with a handgun.”

“We have an individual in custody. We need a wagon.”

“We don’t even have a wagon.”

“There’s about 30 of them! We need back-up.”

    “Nobody’s up here right now.”

“I got multiple fires inside the park. I got one beside the conservatory.”

    “I see other ones.”

    “I can’t cover you.”

“We got looting at the CVS and the 7-Eleven. I’m trying to keep people out of both places. It’s really dark out here tonight.”

“We have gunshots, a woman screaming.”

“Do not drive into locations you can’t get out of. We will not jeopardize our lives for those stores.”

“Breaking into store in the shopping center…. Security says he is armed. He is alone.”

“I have the injured officer back at his command. I’m heading out.”

    “A curfew in the city.”

    “That’s crazy.”

“I hope they make it so not nobody can come out. Then I don’t got to go to work tomorrow.”

The mayor reappeared before the news cameras and insisted that the media had twisted and taken out of context her remarkable words over the weekend. She said she had been talking about protesters, not thugs “who want to incite violence and destroy our city.” She seemed deaf to the echo of her own words, when she had spoken earlier of giving room to “those who wish to destroy.” That is a pretty good definition of a thug.

“What we see tonight that is going in in our city is very disturbing,” she now said with considerable understatement.

    1. She reported that the National Guard would be deployed as soon as it was available, no doubt to restrict the space of these destroyers. There would be a 10 p.m. curfew starting Tuesday.

“This is not a lawless city,” she assured everybody.

She pledged that the thugs would be tracked down thanks to “police videos,” a twist to an uproar that had been sparked by a civilian video taken of Freddie Gray being dragged to a police van.

“We will be holding people accountable,” she promised.

She gave not the slightest glimmer of feeling that she should be held accountable for anything. She may have made her initial ascent from city council president to mayor because her predecessor had been locked up for embezzlement, but she had since been elected to a full term with 87 percent of the vote. She seemed to consider that an unshakable endorsement.

And she rightly felt that Baltimore had been making considerable progress since days so benighted that the city jail had essentially been run by the Black Guerilla Family. The gang’s jailed leader impregnated four corrections officers, two of whom were tattooed with his name, one on her neck.

“This is my jail,” the leader, Tavon White, was recorded saying from behind bars. “My word is law…. If I told any motherf---ing body they had to do this, hit a police, do this, kill a mother---er, do anything, it get done. Period.”

But White’s reign had ended with a series of indictments, and it seemed that the rule of law was beginning to return to Baltimore. Homicides were leveling off. The new police commissioner boasted that he had fired 50 members of the department for misconduct.

Then came the death of poor Freddie Gray. The mayor clearly shared the anger over the failure of the arresting officers to summon medical assistance for Gray when it should have been clear to them that he was in serious distress. She also shared the anger over the failure of the cops to strap him in with a seatbelt even though that had led to the other Baltimore man dying from similar injuries in a police van.

Yet she seemed not to understand what was seething in her own city, what was liable to flare beyond any immediate controlling if the true destroyers were given space.

Gray’s death showed what can happen when the police turn callous.

The riots showed what can happen if the police are believed not to be in control.

Rioters who rampaged after a cellphone video of an arrest will themselves be arrested with the help of police video.

And the good people of Baltimore will have to rebuild, as they had to do after the long-ago riots did of 1968 that followed King’s murder.

King no doubt would have found the city’s present mayor to be smart and decent and right out of his mountaintop dream.

If only she had a little more common sense.

If only she were not deaf to her own words.

  3. A lot of police since 911 have morphed into the IDF. They treat people like they are Palestinians.

We have spent trillions on the Neocon Mission in the ME. We have recycled surplus military equipment into the police forces and a lot of police are double dipping, being in the National Guard or Army Reserve. US cities are not as much fun as voluntary wars in the Middle East where our army of exceptional mercenaries are going to show everyone else how to run their country.

Baltimore, Detroit and hundreds of other US city languish. There are areas in Philadelphia with populations where 30% have not finished high school and poverty and unemployment are over 20%.

We created jobs in China and have people working in jobs paying $10 per hour. Treat people like trash and they respond in kind.

  5. George Roy, 49, a surgical technician, lives about six blocks from where Gray was arrested, and about a block from a CVS pharmacy that was set afire Monday. All the businesses up and down his block have been looted, he said, calling it “outright crazy.”

“They destroyed the city and they didn't wait for the investigation to occur,” he said.

“Now we don’t have stores to go to. We don’t have fast food we can eat at, because they’ve destroyed it all,” Roy said.

The violence came about two weeks after Gray's arrest. Gray and a friend were walking in West Baltimore on April 12 when, officials have said, Gray made eye contact with an officer and fled. Police gave chase.

The death of Freddie Gray: What we know - and don’t know

Videos of the arrest show Gray being put into a police van, dragging his feet, with his hands cuffed behind him. He can be heard screaming. During the trip to police headquarters, Gray asked for medical help, including for an inhaler, but did not receive it.

The van stopped at least twice. At one stop, captured by another video, Gray was taken out of the van and placed on the ground. His legs were put in irons and he was returned to the van. At the second stop, another prisoner was put inside, separated from Gray by a metal barrier. There is no camera in the van.

When officers reached headquarters and took Gray out of the van, he could not speak and was not breathing. Gray slipped into a coma, underwent surgery and died a week later.

Gray died of a severed spine, officials have confirmed. The family says his voice box was crushed and his neck snapped.

Demonstrations over Gray's death had been largely peaceful until Saturday, when 35 people were arrested and six officers injured.

Afterward, Gray's twin sister, Fredericka Gray, called for peace. “My family wants to say, ‘Can y'all please, please stop the violence?'” she said. “Freddie Gray would not want this. Freddie's father and mother do not want any violence. Violence does not get justice.”

The Gray family repeated that plea at a news conference late Monday.

Earlier in the day, thousands of mourners gathered for Gray's televised funeral at a church. Rawlings-Blake attended, as did a representative of the White House, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, comedian and activist Dick Gregory, Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Md.) and Kweisi Mfume, formerly an NAACP leader and U.S representative from Maryland.

Screens on the church walls showed the words, “Black Lives Matter & All Lives Matter,” which have become slogans at demonstrations around the country since a white police officer shot to death an unarmed black man in Ferguson, Mo., in August. That case was followed by demonstrations over the deaths of African Americans at the hands of police in New York City; Cleveland; Tulsa, Okla.; and South Carolina.

“The eyes of this country are all on us, because they want to see whether we have the stuff to make this right,” William Murphy Jr., a lawyer who is representing the Gray family, told the mourners.

“We need justice not just for Freddie Gray, for the Freddie Grays to come,” he said.

Another mourner was Erica Garner, 24, daughter of Eric Garner, who died in New York police custody while gasping, “I can't breathe.” His arrest was videotaped by a bystander.

  8. Gaza: nothing more shameful than attacking sleeping children, says Ban Ki-moon

Israel was responsible for striking seven United Nations sites used as civilian shelters during the 2014 Gaza war in which 44 Palestinians died and 227 others were injured, an inquiry ordered by UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon has concluded.

Analysis Gaza crisis: a closer look at Israeli strikes on UNRWA schools

UN-run schools acting as civilian shelters have been hit seven times during Israel’s Gaza offensive. We catalogue them in detail

Releasing the report on Monday, Ban condemned the attacks “as a matter of the utmost gravity” and said “those who looked to them for protection and who sought and were granted shelter there had their hopes and trust denied”.

Ban insisted that UN locations were “inviolable”.

The issue is particularly sensitive as the locations of all UN buildings – including schools used as shelters – are routinely provided to the Israeli military and updated in times of conflict.

Ban’s criticism was contained in the published summary letter of a confidential internal report, commissioned by the secretary general in November, running to 207 pages.

In his letter Ban also hit out at Palestinian militant groups for putting some UN schools in Gaza at risk by hiding weapons in three locations that were not being used as shelters.

“I am dismayed that Palestinian militant groups would put United Nations schools at risk by using them to hide their arms.”

He added, however, that: “The three schools at which weaponry was found were empty at the time and were not being used as shelters.”

Israeli diplomats had exerted pressure on the UN to delay publication of the report until the completion of Israel’s own investigations into the attacks – conducted by the Israeli military advocate general Danny Efroni. Israel’s military in September opened five criminal investigations into its Gaza war operations, including attacks on some of the UN schools and an incident that killed four Palestinian children on a beach.

The UN inquiry, which examined both forensic evidence and testimonies of UN staff in Gaza during the 50-day war last summer, concluded seven incidents were attributable to the Israel Defence Forces.

Ban added: “I will work with all concerned and spare no effort to ensure that such incidents will never be repeated.”

Although the report has no legal status, the disclosure of the inquiry’s findings comes at a difficult time for Israel on the international stage, facing increasing international isolation over its policies and following the acceptance of the Palestinian Authority as a signatory to the International Criminal Court earlier this month.

'The world stands disgraced' - Israeli shelling of school kills at least 15
    Read more
The attacks on UN schools being used as shelters were among some of the most controversial incidents of the war. International humanitarian law – while complex – requires attacking forces in areas where there are non-combatants to protect civilians and adhere to the principle of proportionality, safeguards even more stringent when civilians are under UN protection.

In one of the most serious incidents, the UNRWA school in Jabaliya was struck by Israeli fire, killing 20 people and wounding dozens.

In the aftermath of the attack Israel claimed – including in a report into the incident – that soldiers near the school were had come under fire.

In another incident that saw Israeli munitions strike a UN school in Beit Hanoun 15 Palestinians were killed in the playground as they awaited evacuation while dozens more injured.

Israeli sources had originally tried to suggest that the attack had been due to a Hamas weapon falling short.

  10. “Brett, speaking only for myself, I agree with your point that the principle of peaceful, non-violent protest and the observance of the rule of law is of utmost importance in any society. MLK, Gandhi, Mandela, and all great opposition leaders throughout history have always preached this precept. Further, it is critical that in any democracy investigation must be completed and due process must be honored before any government or police members are judged responsible.
That said, my greater source of personal concern, outrage and sympathy beyond this particular case is focused neither upon one night’s property damage nor upon the acts, but is focused rather upon the past four-decade period during which an American political elite have shipped middle class and working class jobs away from Baltimore and cities and towns around the U.S. to third-world dictatorships like China and others, plunged tens of millions of good hard-working Americans into economic devastation, and then followed that action around the nation by diminishing every American’s civil rights protections in order to control an unfairly impoverished population living under an ever-declining standard of living and suffering at the butt end of an ever-more militarized and aggressive surveillance state.
The innocent working families of all backgrounds whose lives and dreams have been cut short by excessive violence, surveillance, and other abuses of the Bill of Rights by government pay the true price, an ultimate price, and one that far exceeds the importance of any kids’ game played tonight, or ever, at Camden Yards. We need to keep in mind people are suffering and dying around the U.S., and while we are thankful no one was injured at Camden Yards, there is a far bigger picture for poor Americans in Baltimore and everywhere who don’t have jobs and are losing economic civil and legal rights, and this makes inconvenience at a ball game irrelevant in light of the needless suffering government is inflicting upon ordinary Americans.”

  11. from Ron Paul

Politicians who support an interventionist foreign policy are obviously not concerned with the harm inflicted on the middle-class populations of countries targeted for regime change. These politicians also disregard the harm US foreign policy inflicts on Americans. Middle- and working-class Americans, and their families, who join the military certainly suffer when they are maimed or killed fighting in unjust and unconstitutional wars. Our interventionist foreign policy also contributes to the high tax burden imposed on middle-class Americans.

Middle-class Americans also suffer from intrusions on their liberty and privacy, such as not being able to board an airplane unless they submit to invasive and humiliating searches. Even children and the physically disabled are not safe from the Transposition Security Administration. These assaults are justified by the threat of terrorism, a direct result of our interventionist foreign policy that fosters hatred and resentment of Americans.

Some “military Keynesians” claim that middle-class workers benefit from jobs in the military-industrial complex. Military Keynesians seem to think that the resources spent on militarism would disappear if the Pentagon’s budget were cut. The truth is, if we reduced spending on militarism, those currently employed by the military-industrial complex would be able to find new jobs producing goods desired by consumers. Even those currently employed as lobbyists for the military-industrial complex may be able to find useful work.

  14. The Foreign Minister of Iran does make a valid point ...

FM Zarif calls upon nuclear-weapon states to cease their plans to further invest in modernizing and extending the life span of their nuclear weapons.

UNITED NATIONS - Iran on Monday demanded that countries possessing nuclear weapons scrap any plans to modernize or extend the life of their atomic arsenals, while branding Israel a threat to the region due to its presumed nuclear stockpile.

Speaking on behalf of the 120-nation Non-Aligned Movement, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told signatories to the 1970 nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) that there should be no limits on the transfer of nuclear technology and know-how to NPT signatories.

"We call upon the nuclear-weapon states to immediately cease their plans to further invest in modernizing and extending the life span of their nuclear weapons and related facilities,"
Zarif said at the start of a month-long review conference taking stock of the NPT, the world's benchmark disarmament treaty.

"Reductions in deployments and in operational status cannot substitute for irreversible cuts in, and the total elimination of, nuclear weapons," Zarif said.

He added that Iran and the other 117 non-aligned nations that are parties to the NPT are "deeply concerned by military and security doctrines of the nuclear-weapon states as well as that of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization," which he said permits the use, or threat of use, of atomic weapons.

The five permanent UN Security Council members signed the NPT as nuclear weapon states though the pact calls on them to negotiate on the reduction and eventual elimination of their arms caches. Non-nuclear weapon states complain that there have been too few steps toward nuclear disarmament.

Iran, accused by Western powers of developing a nuclear weapons capability under cover of a civilian program, says its atomic ambitions are entirely peaceful. It is in talks with six world powers to curb sensitive nuclear work in exchange for sanctions relief.

Zarif said NPT signatories should not limit transfers of nuclear technology or know-how to other treaty states as the pact itself does not ban such transfers.

He said non-aligned states viewed Israel's assumed nuclear weapons as "a serious and continuing threat to the security of neighboring and other states, and condemned Israel for continuing to develop and stockpile nuclear arsenals."

  15. Iran, Japan Foreign Ministers Stress Cooperation In Nuclear Safety

    ...
Zarif pointed to the two countries' historical ties and said prospects for future relations were positive, drawing attention to various fields of cooperation between Tehran and Tokyo.

While announcing Iran's readiness for closer cooperation with the Japanese delegation on the NPT conference, he highlighted nuclear safety and disarmament as two significant areas of cooperation between both countries.

Zarif touched upon current regional developments and urged all countries to intensify efforts to overcome common threats and to employ political solutions in resolving conflicts in the region.

He also discussed the latest progress in Iran and the P5+1 group's nuclear negotiations.

"The continuation of an uncertain and unstable situation is not acceptable to us; the American side must take practical and reassuring measures for a nuclear accord to be reached," he said.

Kishida on his part noted the 70th anniversary of the US bombing of Tokyo and extended his country's readiness for joint collaboration in international organisations in nuclear disarmament and peaceful nuclear technology.

He said it was vital to further bilateral talks in economy and trade and underscored political consultations on various ministerial levels between Iran and Japan.

  16. From a Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve News Release

SOUTHWEST ASIA, April 27, 2015 – U.S. and coalition military forces continued to attack Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant terrorists in Syria and Iraq, Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve officials reported today.

Officials reported details of the latest strikes, which took place between 8 a.m. yesterday and 8 a.m. today, local time, noting that assessments of results are based on initial reports.

    Airstrikes in Syria

Attack, bomber and fighter aircraft conducted five airstrikes in Syria:

-- Near Al Hasakah, an airstrike struck eight ISIL fighting positions.

-- Near Kobani, four airstrikes struck an ISIL tactical unit, destroying five ISIL fighting positions and ISIL heavy machine gun.

    Airstrikes in Iraq

-- Near Asad, two airstrikes struck two ISIL tactical units, destroying two ISIL fighting positions.

-- Near Bayji, seven airstrikes struck six ISIL tactical units, destroying three ISIL fighting positions, three ISIL vehicles, an ISIL warehouse and an ISIL mortar system.

-- Near Fallujah, eight airstrikes struck seven ISIL tactical units, destroying five ISIL fighting positions, three ISIL mortar tubes, an ISIL excavator and an ISIL vehicle.

-- Near Ramadi, two airstrikes struck two ISIL tactical units, destroying a recoilless rifle.

-- Near Tal Afar, three airstrikes struck two ISIL tactical units and an ISIL mortar position, destroying an ISIL excavator.

    Part of Operation Inherent Resolve

The strikes were conducted as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, the operation to eliminate the ISIL terrorist group and the threat they pose to Iraq, Syria, the region, and the wider international community. The destruction of ISIL targets in Syria and Iraq further limits the terrorist group's ability to project terror and conduct operations, officials said.

Coalition nations conducting airstrikes in Iraq include the United States, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Jordan, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Coalition nations conducting airstrikes in Syria include the United States, Bahrain, Canada, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

JERUSALEM (JTA) — A Palestinian teenager died hours after he was shot by Israeli troops ..

No attempt at arrest, just fire live ammo, it is the ISraeli Way.

Actually, violence, or the threat thereof, is the only thing that does get justice.

Now THAT is the statement of a TRUE MORON.

    1. Then, Robert "Draft Dodger" Peterson, why did the US invade Afghanistan?
      Take on Japan, after 7DEC1941?

Hang the NAZI after WWII, if violence does not obtain justice?

Robert "Draft Dodger" Peterson denies the lessons of history.

  19. Gaza is not a concentration camp. The analogy is absurd.

Deuce has fallen off the sanity wagon with such absurd comparisons.

A launching pad for rockets against Israel is much better. Though it is more than that too.

It was only after Hamas bullied its way to power that Israel was forced to take some defensive measures, if you recall.

I appreciate the time WiO puts in countering all the absurd claims of Dead Beat Dad and Deuce.

    Thank you, WiO.

    1. Of course Gaza is a prison camp, to deny that ...
Equivalent to denying that the NAZI made the Warsaw ghetto a prison, during WWII.

Again, Robert "Draft Dodger" Peterson denies the lessons of history.

    2. Just as the ISraeli utilize Palestinians to govern the prion, the NAZI utilized Jews to run the Warsaw ghetto.

The first commander of the Warsaw ghetto was Józef Szeryński, a Polish-Jewish police colonel. ...
In ghettos where the Judenrat was resistant to German orders, the Jewish police were often used (as reportedly in Lutsk) to control or replace the council.

One of the largest police units was to be found in the Warsaw Ghetto, where the Jüdischer Ordnungsdienst numbered about 2500. The Łódź Ghetto had about 1200, and the Lviv Ghetto 500.

The Polish-Jewish historian and the Warsaw Ghetto archivist Emanuel Ringelblum has described the cruelty of the ghetto police as "at times greater than that of the Germans, the Ukrainians and the Latvians."

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_Ghetto_Police

Warsaw Ghetto was the largest ghetto containing at its height more than 400,000 people. It was the site of the first urban uprising in occupied Europe.

The Warsaw shared many characteristics with other ghettos: Conditions worsened over time as did accompanying mortality from starvation and disease; social welfare organizations ministered to the needy; there was a rich cultural life; the ghetto was administered internally by a Judenrat and policed by the Jewish Police

      A direct historical correlation.

  20. The Crips, The Bloods, and some black gang whose name I can't recall are signing some kind of pact to shoot the Police, it is being reported.

It may be time for Deuce, who never has much good to say about the Police, to form up that private security force I have recommended.

Rufus has Clan Rufus to protect his ass.

I'm way out here where the only riots we ever have had were after the Hydroplane Races when everybody was dead drunk.

    And those days are over.

      Does not matter to me.

Just another indication that I still own you ... by your own admission.
