How bad is the US Press? Ask an ex-insider, Chris Hedges:

"War is always about betrayal," Hedges notes. "It is about betrayal of the young by the old, of cynics by idealists, and of soldiers and Marines by politicians. Society's institutions, including our religious institutions, which mold us into compliant citizens, are unmasked."

How Israel is fighting for its life

“According to Israel’s ambassador to the US, Hamas has fired 8,000 rockets since the Israel Defense Forces withdrew from Gaza in 2005. Aside from the occasional one fired at a police station or military post, virtually all have been fired randomly at civilians. In addition to being acts of war, each is also a war crime.

“The media has failed to note that unlike the West Bank, Gaza is NOT occupied. It is free of all Israeli military presence. The media also failed to mention that Hamas is not just a terror group. Hamas is the democratically elected government of Gaza — one of the first ones in the entire Arab world.

“So Hamas is the government which the civilians in Gaza — with rocket bases behind and under their homes and their children’s schools — chose overwhelmingly to govern them, and to fire 8,000 rockets at Israel on their behalf. This is the choice they made — AFTER Israeli forces withdrew from Gaza.

“So much for the notion that the Israeli occupation is the root of instability in the region.”

    2. Heavy Palestinian bombardment of 15 Israeli towns greets Egyptian truce bid. Tehran: Don't stop

Tuesday, July 15, Hamas fired 20 rockets from the Gaza Strip in the three hours after the ceasefire proposed by Egypt was due to go into effect at 9.a.m., after flatly rejecting it. The Israeli security cabinet did endorse Cairo’s proposal to mediate the conflict with the Palestinian extremists, but warned that if they continued to fire rockets, Israel would hit back with “all possible force.”
In Cairo, Hamas official Mussa Abu Marzuk took responsibility for eight of the post-“truce” rockets, most of which landed on Ashdod, slightly injuring one woman. Iron Dome intercepted four.
The first rockets hit Eshkol before 9.30, soon to be followed by a steady stream at Sderot, Ashkelon, Kiryat Malachi, Shear Hanegev, Gan Yavneh and Eshkol. As the Hamas official spoke, a rocket hit Netivot and Israel TV reporters at Shear Hanegev interrupted their broadcast and scurried to safety in a shelter.
At 12:30 p.m. Rehovot, Ness Ziona and Kibbutz Givat Brenner were targeted, then sirens blared on Mt. Carmel, in Haifa, Zichron Yaakov and Ain Hashofet and at 13.05 p.m. in the inland towns.
And the day was still young.

  2. You correctly assert that the rockets fired at Israel by Hamas is committing a war crime by launching those missiles against the Israeli population. However those 8000 rockets are not remotely comparable to the 1,000-pound iron fragmentation bombs that have been dropped in large numbers on crowded Palestinian neighborhoods.

...The media has failed to note that unlike the West Bank, Gaza is NOT occupied. It is free of all Israeli military presence. You can’t be serious. The last time Israel mounted a Gaza military assault as severe as the current series of attacks was in 2008, with Operation Cast Lead, which lasted from Dec. 27 of that year to Jan. 18, 2009. That attack saw 1,455 Palestinians killed, including 333 children. Roughly 5,000 more Palestinians were injured. The IDF has forcibly removed 300,000 Palestinians from their homes and their property.

Israel is currently attacking a population of 1.8 million that has no army, no navy, no air force, no mechanized military units, no command and control and no heavy artillery.

This is not war, it is indiscriminate slaughter. This is not being reported by the US press.

    2. This is not war, it is indiscriminate slaughter.

indiscriminate? hardly. Israel targets specific buildings that hold munitions, rockets and/or are the leaders of Hamas homes.

Israel, which has been well documented, employees numerous means to tell the innocents to leave their building.

Phone calls, leaflets and even "knocker" bombs on roof tops.

As for the claims that Israel uses "1,000-pound iron fragmentation bombs that have been dropped in large numbers on crowded Palestinian neighborhoods" is also specious.

Specifically Israel, when taking out a house, building etc uses a special munition, designed to blow out the walls without taking out the buildings next door.

MANY times the 2ndary explosions of the rockets and munitions being illegally stored in those building damage the palestinians themselves.

      let's have some honesty dude.

Israel derangement syndrome: 'Iron dome' blamed as 'likely to prolong conflict'
    By Thomas Lifson

Just when you thought Jew-hatred double standards applied to Israel couldn’t get any more ridiculous, along comes this gem, via Rob Garver of The Fiscal Times and Yahoo News:

… while the missile defense system is undoubtedly saving Israeli lives, in an ironic twist, some analysts believe that it is likely to prolong the conflict with Hamas by reducing pressure on Netanyahu to negotiate a cease-fire.

The underlying presumption here is astounding. By defending itself, Israel is doing something harmful. Why can’t it just hurry up and surrender? Hamas, after all, wants to extinguish Israel and drive all the Jews into the sea. By objecting to this proposition, Israel is prolonging the conflict, and those poor Gazans, who voted in Hamas and who permit it to fire rockets from their homes, schools, hospitals and mosques, are suffering as a result. How dare Israel defend itself?

Has there ever been another nation on earth criticized for defending itself from an attack?

    .....

Read of the day: Israel as the Last Man Standing
    By Thomas Lifson

The Middle East, always complex, is descending into a form of chaos that seems baffling. Bringing order to the complexity is Daniel P. Goldman, aka Spengler, writing in Tablet Magazine. A former Wall Street numbers guy, Goldman brings together a lot of demographic data expressed in useful charts, to lay out his case that time is on Israel’s side, and that the Muslims of the Middle East are engaged in a long-term battle, which he likens to the 30 Years War that devastated Europe in the 17th century:

The region has seen nothing like it since the Mongol invasion of the 13th century. Perpetual war has turned into a snowball that accumulates people and resources as it rolls downhill and strips the ground bare of sustenance. Those who are left shiver in tents in refugee camps, and their young men go off to the war. There is nothing new about this way of waging war; it was invented in the West during the Thirty Years War by the imperial general Albrecht von Wallenstein, and it caused the death of nearly half the population of Central Europe between 1618 and 1648. (snip)

The mess in the Middle East brings to mind the machinations around Swedish intervention in the Thirty Years War between 1627 and 1635, when France’s Cardinal Richelieu paid Sweden’s King Gustavus Adolphus to intervene on the Protestant side in order to weaken France’s Catholic rival Austria. At different times, Protestant Saxony and Catholic Bavaria allied with France, Austria, and each other, respectively. France and Sweden began as allies, briefly became enemies, and then were allies again. Looming over this snake-pit of religious, dynastic, and national rivalries was the figure of Albrecht von Wallenstein, the Austrian generalissimo who twice saved the Empire from defeat at the hands of the Protestants. Wallenstein, commanding a polyglot mercenary army with no national or religious loyalty, played both sides, and Austria had him murdered in 1634.

There is more than coincidence to the parallels between the Middle East today and 17th-century Europe. Iran’s intervention into Syria’s civil conflict inaugurated a new kind of war in the region, the sort that Richelieu practiced in the 1620s. Iran’s war objectives are not national or territorial in the usual sense; rather, the objective is the war itself, that is, the uprooting and destruction of potentially hostile populations.

As the Muslims self-destruct, Israel meanwhile prospers, and perhaps more importantly, is having babies at a rate higher than the local Arabs, whose fertility is declining.

The entire long piece deserves to be read. But here are his conclusions:

The historical homeland of the Jewish people [he means the West Bank, aka Judea and Sumaria] will pass into Israeli sovereignty not because the national-religious will it to be so, or because an Israeli government seeks territorial aggrandizement, but because Israel will be the last man standing in the region, the only state able to govern Judea and Samaria, and the only military force capable of securing its borders. It will happen without fanfare, de facto rather than de jure, at some moment in the not-too-distant future when the foreign ministries of the West are locked in crisis session over Iraq or Syria. And it will happen with the tacit support of Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia.

Israeli authority will replace the feckless regime of the Palestine Authority in order to maintain public order and ensure that the electricity works, and the roads are secure, and that bands of jihadist marauders or Shiite terrorists do not massacre entire villages; this action will elicit the reflex condemnation from bored and dispirited Western diplomats. The realization of the Zionist dream will then be consummated not with a bang, but a whimper; the bangs will be much louder elsewhere.

    Hat tip: Clarice Feldman

    And, another.

    2. >>>>A one-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is upon us. It won’t arrive by Naftali Bennett’s proposal to annex the West Bank’s Area C, or through the efforts of BDS campaigners and Jewish Voice for Peace to alter the Jewish state. But it will happen, sooner rather than later, as the states on Israel’s borders disintegrate and other regional players annex whatever they can. As that happens, Israeli sovereignty in Judea and Samaria is becoming inevitable.

Last week’s rocket attacks from Gaza failed to inflict many casualties in Israel—but they administered a mortal wound to Palestinian self-governance. Hamas launched its deepest strikes ever into Israel after the IDF cracked down on its West Bank operations following the murder last month of three Israeli boys, arresting nearly 900 members of Hamas and other terrorist groups. Humiliated in the territories, and unable to pay its 44,000 Gaza employees, Hamas acted from weakness, gambling that missile attacks would elicit a new Intifada on the West Bank. Although Fatah militias joined in the rocket attacks from Gaza, for now the Palestinian organizations are in their worst disarray in 20 years.

The settlers of Judea and Samaria have stood in the cross-hairs of Western diplomacy for two decades, during which the word “settler” has become a term of the highest international opprobrium. Yet the past decade of spiraling conflicts in the Middle East have revealed that what is settled in the region is far less significant than what is unsettled. Iran’s intervention into the Syrian civil conflict has drawn the Sunni powers into a war of attrition that already has displaced more than 10 million people, mostly Sunnis, and put many more at risk. The settled, traditional, tribal life of the Levant has been shattered. Never before in the history of the region have so many young men had so little hope, so few communal ties, and so many reasons to take up arms.<<<<

  11. This article does criticize Netanyahu to some extent -

Tel Aviv, Israel — Down in the south there is a feeling of déjà vu: Israeli jets have dropped thousands of tons of bombs on Gaza, hundreds of rockets have been launched into Israel and troops are amassing along the border ahead of a possible ground invasion.

And yet something is very different about this latest go-round of violence between Israel and Hamas. The Palestinian militant group is, in the estimation of Israeli officials, weaker than it has been in memory, and Israel senses the best opportunity it has had in a long time to permanently degrade or even eliminate Hamas as a political factor. It’s not just that the Israelis are pounding Hamas from the air and rounding up senior Hamas officials; with help from their de facto ally across the border—Egyptian general-cum-dictator-cum-president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi—they have managed to keep Hamas’ supply tunnels to Gaza virtually shut down. Analysts estimate that the roughly $20 million per month that Hamas collected in tax revenues from the tunnels has been reduced almost to zero.

Oil Production in the Bakken Reaches New Record
    By Sierra Rayne

With the release of the latest oil production data for the Bakken in North Dakota, this tight oil play reached a new record of 975,000 barrels per day in May. This represents an increase of almost 37,000 barrels per day from the previous month, and is the largest April-May increase on record. Daily oil per well remains stable at 127 barrels, down only slightly from the May 2013 value of 130.

Overall production for North Dakota was also up in May to a new record of 1.04 million barrels per day, with daily oil per well steady at 99 barrels.

North Dakota has the lowest unemployment rate in the nation at 2.6 percent. In the western part of the state, unemployment rates in some counties are at – or even below – one percent. Unlike the neighboring states of Montana, South Dakota, and Minnesota, which all saw their unemployment rates remain high through 2009 and 2010 at peak levels, North Dakota's unemployment rate has declined in near-perfect correlation with rising oil production in the Bakken.

Between 2009 and 2012, real per capita GDP in North Dakota increased an astonishing 42.4 percent. The nearest competitor was Oregon with a 13.6-percent increase over this period. The corresponding national increase was only 5.2 percent. North Dakota's per capita disposable personal income has increased by over 38 percent since 2009, leading the nation. Oklahoma ranked second at 17 percent. The national increase was just 10 percent.

  14. Opinion: Provocation and violence

What set off the new spiral of violence in the Middle East? Does Palestinian organization Hamas deserve the blame? DW's Bettina Marx doubts that's the case and takes a look back at developments in recent weeks.

The world is looking on in disbelief at developments in Israel, where a new round of violence is unfolding that has cost nearly 200 people their lives and maimed more than 1,000. European and American politicians broadly agree that Hamas is at fault for the escalation. The group provoked Israelis for so long with its rocket attacks that there was nothing left to do but strike back. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier is among those who take this view and has condemned attacks on Israeli towns.
    Misplaced blame
But things aren't quite so simple. A whole chain of events took place before the hostilities exploded, and they don't cast the Israeli government in a positive light. Everything began with the formation of the new Palestinian unity government on June 2. The intent was to end years of bloody feuding between Fatah and Hamas in order to strengthen Palestinians in their quest for self-determination. To Israel's horror, governments in Europe and the US signaled readiness to work together with the experts that made up the new Palestinian government.

    Bettina Marx
When three Israeli yeshiva students were kidnapped 10 days later near Hebron in the occupied West Bank, Jerusalem saw its chance to strike out at the new government. Although Israeli security forces had evidence right from the start that the three teenagers had been murdered directly after their kidnapping, the government spread the idea that the youths were still alive and could be saved, and launched a major search. Hundreds of Hamas members were imprisoned, and the houses of the alleged perpetrators were destroyed as raids took place. The goal was to destroy Hamas' structures in the West Bank to bring about the collapse of the national unity government.
    Drawing in Gaza
Hamas' supporters in the Gaza Strip also faced attacks. On June 29, an air strike killed one member of the organization. The next day, Hamas shot rockets at Israel for the first time since a 2012 cease-fire. That spelled the end of a quieter period along the border to the Gaza Strip, and violence quickly escalated.
Even this series of events doesn't tell the whole story. The core of the problem is the blockade of the Gaza Strip. Nearly two million Palestinians live in this tiny Mediterranean area, cut off from the world and with no prospects of a humane future. The majority of the Gaza Strip's current residents are younger than 18 and did not vote for Hamas. Nonetheless, Israel and the international community are condemning them to a life of poverty and destitution. As long as that does not change, peace will never come to the Middle East.

Israel accepts Egypt cease-fire proposal, but Hamas rejects
    By Thomas Lifson

Now it is clear which side wants violence. William Booth and Griff Witte write in the Washington Post:

Israel’s security cabinet voted to accept an initiative from Egypt’s military-backed government that had been announced Monday evening. Israel suspended its operations in Gaza at 9 a.m. local time, but rocket fire from militants there continued.

A senior Hamas official, Sami Abu Zuhri, accused Egypt of collaborating with Israel to spring the proposal on the militant Palestinian Islamist group without prior warning. He called the proposal “unacceptable” and said Egypt is not a fair mediator because its government is deeply hostile toward Hamas.

“We are holding in our hands a proposal we got off social media,” Zuhri said. “We refuse to be dealt with in such a way.”

The group’s armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, wrote on its Web site that the initiative was “not worth the ink it was written with” [odd since others rejected it for being offered on social media] and vowed that “the resistance will continue until all the demands of our people are met.”

That is pretty clear, if inconsistent. Israel is responding perfectly appropriately:

Netanyahu indicated Tuesday that a Hamas rejection of the Egyptian proposal would lead to an escalation of a conflict that has already left at least 185 Gazans dead.

“If Hamas rejects the Egyptian proposal and the rocket fire continues, which it looks like it does at the moment, then we are prepared to continue and intensify the operation against Hamas, and we will get the support from the members of the international community,” Netanyahu said Tuesday at a news conference at the Defense Ministry in Tel Aviv.

Hamas is playing the usual Palestinian game of using civilians and children as human shields, launching rockets from houses, schools, hospitals, mosques and other sites where innocents will be killed when Israel attacks the offensive weapons being used against it. Then, the “international community” wrings its hands over the “disproportionate response” – as if taking out weapons being used to attack Israeli civilians is not appropriate self-defense.

Hamas is increasingly desperate. It is unable to apy its officials, and Gaza is now effectively sealed off, as Egypt (increasingly hostile to Hamas) has closed its border crossings, and Hamas itself has closed the Erez Crossing into Israel. That way, Gazans will be unable to receive medical treatment in Israel, and supplies will be cut off. Once again, the welfare of Palestinians is secondary to scoring political points against Israel.

Will Palestinians ever wake up and realize that they have been exploited as pawns and sacrificial lambs for the jihad ambitions of their putative leaders?

  23. Zionist murder civilians, Jewish refugees in a False Flag operation

On Nov. 25, 1940, a boat carrying Jewish refugees from Nazi Europe, the “Patra,” exploded and sank off the coast of Palestine killing 252 people.

The Zionist “Haganah” claimed the passengers committed suicide to protest British refusal to let them land. Years later, it admitted that rather than let the passengers go to Mauritius, it blew up the vessel for its propaganda value.

“Sometimes it is necessary to sacrifice the few in order to save the many,”
Moshe Sharett, a former Israeli Prime Minister said at memorial service in 1958.

  25. When one reflects that Hamas has not only fired missiles at Israeli population centers but has deliberately targeted the Dimona nuclear site in the Negev, we are experiencing what is called a “game changer,” rendering all presumably rational temporizing null and void. Hamas is not trying to prevent or preempt an Israeli nuclear strike, which it knows is not going to happen; it is, rather, hoping to create mass civilian casualties via the diffusion of nuclear waste materials. A red line has been crossed — and it is not an Obama red line the world has learned to safely disregard. In the words of Michael Snyder, editor of The Economic Collapse Blog (ECB), “The fact that Hamas is attempting to create a nuclear holocaust is essentially an act of genocide”; indeed, it is an act of nuclear terrorism as defined by the United Nations. As reported in Breitbart, “Article 2 (1) of the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism states:

Any person commits an offence within the meaning of this Convention if that person unlawfully and intentionally…(b)…uses or damages a nuclear facility in a manner which releases or risks the release of radioactive material: (i) With the intent to cause death or serious bodily injury; or (ii) With the intent to cause substantial damage to property or to the environment; or (iii) With the intent to compel a natural or legal person, an international organization or a State to do or refrain from doing an act.”

  26. A few months after Obamacare's  launch — back when HealthCare.Gov still seemed like a computer virus built by Ted Cruz to forever discredit the federal government — I attended a dinner where an Obamacare skeptic laid out a simple test for predicting the program's survival: were insurers joining or fleeing?

    insurers believe Obamacare is working

We know now that they're joining. Obamacare will offer more insurance choices in 2015 than it did in 2014. And that's because insurers believe Obamacare is working. They see enrollment above expectations; consumers who are basically happy with their insurance; an undeniable drop in the uninsured population; people paying their premiums; exchanges that are going to work better in 2015 than they did in 2014; an age mix that works well enough now and will likely improve as the individual mandate toughens; and a political system that isn't likely to repeal the law nor or ever.

Put simply, they see a new and growing business. And they want to be part of it.

Graph showing huge drop in uninsured rate

Amidst all this Paul Krugman points out something I've noticed too: "what you get whenever you suggest that things are going OK is an outpouring, not so much of disagreement, as of fury. People get red-in-the-face angry, practically to the point of incoherence, over the suggestion that [Obamacare's] not a disaster."

Part of that is a bad information loop: conservative coverage of Obamacare tends to be a parade of horror stories, coming disasters, and promises that a political reckoning is right around the corner. The tone of the coverage in conservative quarters today isn't all that different than it was during the law's initial weeks, when it really was a disaster.

The unrelenting focus on the law, and its close association with President Obama himself, has made Obamacare a vessel for the core political fights of our age. Its success is seen as a validation not just of the law, but of President Obama, and even of liberalism. And so its success must be more furiously resisted. So much has been invested in Obamacare's failure that its success would be ideologically catastrophic for its critics.

Which is pretty strange, actually. Because Obamacare's success is going to end up validating some pretty important conservative ideas — and, potentially, forestalling some liberal ones.

The liberal dream wasn't a health-care system where success can be partly measured by the enthusiasm of private insurers. The liberal vision was single payer, or some kind of France-like multi-payer system. The first iteration of a national health-care proposal with the basic shape of Obamacare was when Senate Republicans presented it as an alternative to Bill . . . . . . .

Conservatives Won - They just don't know it

Corporations are sitting on record levels of cash and not investing. The stock market has been driven to a large degree by shrinking, large companies buying back stock with free money. Median wages are dropping. Unemployment remains high. CPI? A ludicrous measure. Core doesn't include the things that have increased the most, food, energy and take a look at your water bill. http://theweek.com/article/index/264681/israels-bombing-of-gaza-is-morally-justified--and-eminently-stupid
Israel's bombing of Gaza is morally justified — and eminently stupid
“On June 29, the prime minister attempted to placate these calls for vengeance with limited air strikes against a rocket squad in Gaza. That bombing killed a Hamas operative. The first Hamas rockets were fired at Israel the next day.
It was the first rocket barrage launched by Hamas since 2012.”

    Really? …Hmm …

“In January, Palestinian Militants launched 22 rockets and four mortar shells at Israel in 19 separate attacks. Two of the rockets were launched from Sinai.”

“In February, Palestinian Militants launched nine rockets at Israel in seven separate attacks.”

“In March, Palestinians launched 65 rockets and mortar shell, in 23 attacks.”

“In April, There were 19 rockets and 5 mortar shell in 14 attacks towards Israel.”

“Throughout May 4 rockets and 3 mortar shells were launched from Gaza in 5 attacks towards Israel.”

In June, 49 rockets and 1 mortar round were fired into Israel.

I grant the war is “stupid”. A war needs a strategy. Tactics are then employed to bring about the desired goals. This dust-up has no strategy as far as I can see; therefore, it is “stupid”. Netanyahu is using the IDF to make lots of noise. To what end?

However, Hamas Muslim Brotherhood terrorists refused to stop firing rockets from Gaza into Israeli population centers. Fifty rockets were fired from Gaza into Israel in six hours since 9 a.m. local time, when the ceasefire was set to initiate.

At 3 p.m. local time, Israel announced that its unilateral declaration was no more. By the way, fighting a war for nothing beyond the survival of ones political career is grossly immoral. In my opinion, that is what Netanyahu is all about. I will rejoice on his day of infamy.

Hamas bombs open spaces to discover Israel's weaknesses--Domino's Pizza
      By Ethel C. Fenig

As Jack Engelhard of Israel National News noted

Although you can be sure about the rest of CNN, especially its man on the scene Ben Wedeman, reporting from Gaza, or maybe from inside Israel. In any case, good ol’ Ben was unhappy. This is not a direct quote, but close: “Hamas keeps firing rockets into Israel but they are not hitting anybody. They’re landing in open spaces. So what’s the use?”

He is correct. Sure, now many of Hamas' rockets are landing in open spaces but others, over cities and towns, are being spectacularly brought down by Iron Dome. But Israel, not underestimating the enemy while protecting its citizens, realizes there might be other, darker currents for these missiles seemingly aimed at harmless open spaces according to Debka. http://debka.com/article/24095/The-hidden-intelligence-agendas-behind-Hamas%E2%80%99-1-000-rocket-barrage-and-Israel%E2%80%99s-1-500-air-strikes

These might be the uses Ben Wedeman asked about.

Speculation has been rife about the motivations behind Hamas’ more than 100-rocket-a-day barrage against the Israeli population, week after week. The most popular theory is that the Palestinian Islamists are aiming for a spectacular victory over Israel by hitting an important strategic target and/or causing a high number of fatalities. Until one or both those objectives is achieved, the Palestinian Islamists won’t stop shooting. (snip)

      Delete

    2. They don’t believe Hamas tacticians have squandered 1,000 rockets thus far on a whim or at random. They are most likely motivated by three goals, which are also important to Hamas’ future plans – and not just Hamas:

      1. Why would Hamas keep on shooting when so many of its rockets miss their targets or are destined to be downed by Israel’s Iron Dome interception batteries? The answer is that its tacticians have a hidden agenda. The rocket crews and their masters are testing the strengths and weaknesses of Israel’s wonder weapon for future reference.

Hamas knew in advance of the massive rocket blitz it launched against Israel in the last week of June that the Iron Dome defensive shield was if not impermeable then a major impediment.

At the same time, by battering the very areas where this shield was deployed, Hamas planners sought to expose its weak points and provide the Palestinians terrorists and their allies, Iran and Hizballah, with valuable data about the linchpin of Israel’s defenses. (snip)

      2. When the distribution of Hamas targets is examined, a premeditated program becomes visible: They were not randomly aimed at Dimona, Tel Aviv, Modiin and Hadera, but sought out the nuclear reactor (Dimona), Israel’s national and business heartland (Tel Aviv), the national power center (Hadera), Ben Gurion airport (Modiin), Israeli air bases near Negev towns, and military and port installations in Haifa, Ashkelon and Ashdod.

Hamas strategists noted that when the rocket fire intensified, so too did the Iron Dome interceptions.

While not averse to hitting Israel’s prime strategic sites directly, the Palestinians were their missed launches to develop data for guidance systems that would make their rockets and mortars more accurate in future conflicts.

However, in addition to launching missiles towards Israel while deprived of food during the day because of the Muslim holiday of Ramadan, (if not followed violators are flogged)

Hamas also sought to do even more damage to Israel by hacking into Domino's Pizza Israel, warning

“Today will strike deep in Israel, Tel Aviv, Haifa, Jerusalem, Ashkelon, Ashdod more than 2000 rockets. We’ll start at 7. Counting back towards the end of Israel … Be warned!”

Warned, the oh not so frightened Israelis responded

The pizza delivered to the Hammas Ninja turtles should have included roasted pork bits on the top!

Should drop pepperoni pizzas all over Gaza and watch them struggle not to eat them.

More is sure to come in this over 3000 year and counting conflict between Arabs and Jews, babble about a probable John Kerry instigated temporary cease fire from Egypt notwithstanding. Till then, Israelis are munching on pizza and other good stuff (yes, Israel has imported American style Domino's pizza but also has its own home grown great Israeli and Italian joints.) and fighting back.

Israelis fighting back angers liberals. That means Israel must be doing something right.

  43. Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen on Tuesday said the U.S. labor market is healing but still needs support from the nation’s central bank.

In testimony for a hearing before the Senate Banking Committee, Yellen noted that hiring has picked up compared to last year, averaging 230,000 net new jobs per month this year. The unemployment rate has dropped from 7.5 percent to 6.1 percent over the past year -- faster than the Fed expected.

But perhaps most importantly, Yellen acknowledged that broader measures of labor market health have registered “notable improvements.” She has frequently argued that the traditional measure of unemployment does not capture the true strain in the job market. Many workers may be in part-time jobs when they would rather have full-time positions, or they may have given up looking for work because they are discouraged by their prospects.

The broadest measure of labor market distress shows 12.1 percent of the labor force is unemployed, underemployed or discouraged -- down about 2 percentage points from a year ago. Though the numbers are moving in the right direction, Yellen said Tuesday they remain too high. Some economists believe that is why wage growth has remained weak despite stronger hiring.

“These and other indications that significant slack remains in labor markets are corroborated by the continued slow pace of growth in most measures of hourly compensation,” Yellen said in her prepared remarks.

    Her comment also signaled that . . . . .

In Iraq, death toll rises among Shiite recruits battling insurgency

idealistic and fervent volunteers who followed their religious leaders' fatwa to enlist and soon found themselves thrown onto the front lines.

Facing them are seasoned and dug-in Sunni insurgents, among them skilled snipers, expert bomb makers and savvy street fighters. Many have extensive experience battling U.S. troops, Iraqi forces and, in some cases, the neighboring Syrian army and its allies.

By contrast, many Shiite volunteers appear to have had little formal training, according to interviews here. They were rushed into battle as Iraqi army units disintegrated and the government scrambled to deflect an existential threat.

"They're being thrown out there without training against experienced soldiers," said an undertaker in this shrine city, where death is an industry and war means more business.
      ...
Ali Hussein was placed in a police unit in one of the most dangerous cities in Iraq. Ramadi was a hub of Sunni resistance to the U.S.-led occupation and of the subsequent rebellion against the U.S.-backed government of Prime Minister Nouri Maliki. The ferocity of the resistance in Anbar was legendary among U.S. soldiers and Marines.

"He would call us and say there was fighting going on all the time," said the distraught father, outfitted in a traditional tribal cloak and Arab headdress. "He wanted to volunteer even before the fatwa," he added, referring to the edict last month from Shiite clerics urging young men to sign up at recruitment centers.
      ...
The number of body washings has doubled in the last month to about 60 a day, including many young men killed at the front, workers here said. This site is only one of many pre-burial washing spots.

"These are all soldiers who died doing their duty," said Awad Moussawi, 52, who is among the staff of professional washers. "This is a necessary jihad. Islam will be victorious."

They have a large supply of boots, not much experience, even less training.

The learning curve is pretty steep, but they have lots and lots of boots.

  48. Someone Is Launching Airstrikes on Iraq, But No One Knows Who

    July 8, 2014 | 1:45 pm

When the history is finally written about this latest bout of fighting in Iraq, it’s a safe bet that the ebooks will describe the fighting as the strangest goddamn war/conflict/combat to grace the annals of conflict in quite some time. Take last week's bout of airstrikes in Mosul.

Iraq’s second-largest city is currently under the control of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS… or ISIL… or the Islamic State… or the caliphate… or Whatever-the-Hell-You-Want-to-Call-the-Sunni-Extremist-Messiness). It's not all that crazy that Mosul was bombed. What is kind of crazy is that nobody is sure who decided to start bombing Mosul.
    ...
After the latest round of airstrikes in Mosul, the Washington Post’s intrepid reporters tried to puzzle out basic stuff that any reporter in a war zone might want to find out. Questions like “Which countries are actively involved in the blowing-things-up and killing-people portions of this particular war?”

So they called the US and asked if the US knew anything about the airstrikes. The US said no.

So they called the Iraqi government and asked if they knew anything about the airstrikes. The Iraqi government said no.

So they called the Iraqi military and asked if they knew anything about the airstrikes. They didn’t return the call.

  49. Iraq: The underprepared recruits bolstering the Iraqi army

Dressed in mismatched khaki military uniforms, boots loosely tied and paunches showing, the volunteers held on to each other's shoulders as they practised marching in the roasting desert heat.

Nearby, young men dashed for cover, running across the car park of the Iraqi military training centre waving plastic Kalashnikov.

As jihadists from the Islamic State vow to smite Iraq's Shia population and topple the Shia majority government, thousands of men from the sect have answered a call by the nation's political and religious leaders to take up arms.

Just as in past wars, the first recruits are led to slaughter, that is why they are referred to as "Cannon Fodder".
The term much older than the war in Iraq.

"They have the will and the ability to fight," said Captain Ziad Tarek, the head of media communications for a military training base, echoing the rhetoric aired on Iraqi government channels. "Nobody forced them to volunteer. "

Almost two thousand men were taking part in the two week training programme at the military academy visited by the Telegraph, with many more on the waiting list, military commanders said.

Thousands of Shia Muslims in India have volunteered to go to Iraq to ... are recruiting volunteers pledging to protect Shia holy shrines in the ...

Multiple reports of people from India volunteering to join the fight
,,,in Delhi, Anjuman-e-Haidari, a Shia organisation, claims nearly 30,000 Indians have signed up as volunteers to take the flight the other way round. The Anjuman is supposedly the only organisation in the world to launch such an initiative. While a majority of those who have enrolled for it — men and women from all walks of life — are from the Shia sect, there are Sunnis and even a couple of Hindus on the list as well.

As news of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) destroying holy Shia sites trickles in, many in the community fear that Karbala — especially the shrine of Hussain Ibn Ali, the most revered site for Shias after Mecca and Medina — is under threat too. The Iraqi government has stepped up security around the monuments and Iran has reportedly sent in armed forces for their protection last month.
