COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Of that, I have no doubt. You will run again."

After his speech, Obama met with volunteers and Boston Marathon organizers, many of whom cared for the injured, and with victims at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Violence terrorized Bostonians overnight, and police believe two suspects involved are the same men who allegedly planted bombs that killed three in the Boston Marathon Monday.
One was shot dead early Friday, and the other is still on the loose, authorities said.
The person who was shot and killed in the Boston Marathon terror attack manhunt is believed to have had explosives on his body, a law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation said Friday.
One of the men, "suspect number 2" in Monday's bombing, is still at large in the Boston suburb of Watertown, where dozens of officers from local, state and federal law enforcement agencies have fanned out to track him down, said transit police spokesman Paul MacMillan.

Russia’s Chechen chief blames CIA for violence

(Reuters) - The Kremlin-backed chief of Russia’s turbulent Chechnya region said his forces were fighting U.S. and British intelligence services who want to split the country apart, according to an interview published Thursday.

Former rebel-turned-Moscow-ally Ramzan Kadyrov said in comments to Zavtra newspaper reprinted on his official website that he had seen the U.S. driving license of a CIA operative who was killed in a security operation he led.

Chechen authorities have previously said insurgents following the radical Wahabist form of Islam receive support from international Islamist groups sympathetic to al-Qaeda, but have not accused the West of instigating violence.

"We're fighting in the mountains with the American and English intelligence agencies. They are fighting not against Kadyrov, not against traditional Islam, they are fighting against the sovereign Russian state," he said.

The West sought to attack both Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and the country as a whole by targeting the country's weakest regions, Kadyrov said in the comments republished prominently on www.chechnya.gov.ru.

Kadyrov was appointed by Moscow as a bulwark against separatist rebels in the mainly Muslim province, but rights activists say he flouts federal laws and is himself responsible for much of the violence that has grown in recent months.

"The West is interested to cut off the Caucasus from Russia. The Caucasus - a strategic frontier of Russia. If they take away the Caucasus from Russia, it's like taking away half of Russia."

Many Chechens have emigrated to Europe, Turkey, and Georgia and some have been recruited as insurgents, said Kadyrov.

  32. Last week the Al Nusra Front, the military backbone of the US-sponsored Syrian opposition, openly swore its loyalty to Al Qaeda.

Al Nusra leader Abu Mohammed al-Golani pledged allegiance to Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, the Egyptian-born cleric who served for many years as Osama bin Laden’s second-in-command.

“The sons of Al Nusra Front pledge allegiance to Sheikh Ayman al-Zawahiri,” al-Golani said in a recorded message released last week. The statement also indicated that the Syrian terrorist group would merge with Al Qaeda in Iraq, from which Al Nusra has received personnel and training.

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the head of the Islamic State in Iraq, Al Qaeda’s affiliate in that country, said last week that his group would join with Al Nusra under the shared banner of “The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant.”

The Al Nusra Front (or Jabhat al-Nusra) became the most effective armed group in the US-backed Syrian opposition last year. Its cadres, Islamist militants recruited internationally with combat experience from other wars, have inflicted several defeats on Syrian government forces, while carrying out sectarian atrocities against minority groups and alleged regime sympathizers.

The Free Syrian Army (FSA), the loose coalition of militias sponsored by Washington and its allies in their proxy war against the government of President Bashar al-Assad, issued a statement disavowing any formal ties with Al Nusra.

“We don’t support the ideology of Al Nusra,” an FSA spokesman said. “There has never been and there will never be a decision at the command level to coordinate with Al Nusra.”

This denial appears meaningless, however, as the FSA then admitted that it planned to continue co-operating with Al Nusra fighterson “certain operations.”

Without Al Nusra, the FSA would have very limited fighting capabilities. In July 2012, the UK-based Guardian newspaper reported from within Syria that the FSA frequently relied on al-Nusra when fighting the Syrian army. In the piece, titled “Al-Qaeda turns tide for rebels in battle for eastern Syria,” FSA personnel said that they had called upon Al Nusra to carry out truck and car bombings, plant roadside bombs, and to supply fighters, small arms and ordnance.

The FSA lacks a popular base of support, and appears to have little operational authority, within Syria. Rather, it is various sectarian and ethnic-based militias that carry out strikes against the Syrian regime, each for their own ends. Among these groups, it is Al Nusra that has proved to be the most deadly. Its militants, drawn to the Syrian war under the banner of Islamist jihad, are recruited from the ranks of Sunni extremist veterans of the wars in Chechnya, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya.

  36. Tamerlan Tsarnaev, Dead Bombing Suspect: “I Don’t Have a Single American Friend"
By David Weigel | Posted Friday, April 19, 2013, at 8:03 AM

Police have identified Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, as the “black hat” bombing suspect, killed during the manhunt that followed. Readers have pointed out that Johannes Hirn made Tsarnaev the subject of a photo essay, "Will Box for Passport," taken before the boxer competed at National Golden Gloves competition in Salt Lake City. The captions give us a micro-profile of the suspect.

Tamerlan, who studies at Bunker Hill Community College in Boston and wants to become an engineer, took the semester off from school to train for the competition.

Tamerlan fled Chechnya with his family because of the conflict in the early 90s, and lived for years in Kazakhstan before getting to the United States as a refugee.

Originally from Chechnya, but living in the United States since five years, Tamerlan says: “I don’t have a single American friend, I don’t understand them."

If he wins enough fights... Tamerlan says he could be selected for the US Olympic team and be naturalized American. Unless his native Chechnya becomes independent, Tamerlan says he would rather compete for the United States than for Russia.

Tamerlan says he doesn't drink or smoke anymore: "God said no alcohol." A muslim, he says: “There are no values anymore,” and worries that “people can’t control themselves.

Baby’s Death Renews Debate Over a Circumcision Ritual
      By LIZ ROBBINS
      Published: March 7, 2012

Prosecutors are investigating the death of a newborn boy who died in September after contracting herpes through a controversial practice of ritual circumcision, reviving a debate in New York over safety and religious freedom.

The Brooklyn district attorney, Charles J. Hynes, confirmed on Wednesday that the investigation was continuing, but declined to comment further.

The cause of death of the 2-week-old boy, who died at Maimonides Hospital in Brooklyn on Sept. 28, was Type 1 herpes, caused by “ritual circumcision with oral suction,” according to the medical examiner’s office.

    4. Baby so victimized by Judaism, it died.

The ritual of oral suction — or in Hebrew, metzitzah b’peh — is practiced almost exclusively in ultra-Orthodox communities and, to a lesser degree, in Orthodox Jewish communities, despite efforts by the city to curtail it and educate communities about its health risks. The procedure occurs during the circumcision ritual of the bris, as the practitioner, or mohel, removes the foreskin of the penis and then sucks the blood from the wound to clean it.

In 2003 and 2004, the city reported three cases of Type 1 herpes that were linked to circumcision, involving a boy on Staten Island and twin boys in Brooklyn, one of whom died. The procedures were done by one mohel, Rabbi Yitzchok Fischer, who was later prohibited from performing the ritual in New York City.

    6. No, quote, it is a story of five children being victimized by archaic practices, not just one, whose victimization the authorities became aware of. Two of the babies died.

  39. Chechen militants have fought alongside al-Qaeda and the Taliban and possibly vice-versa. In Chechnya: From Nationalism to Jihad (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2008), James Hughes sheds some light on possible reasons that Chechen separatists might attack the United States:

U.S. criticism of Russian policy in Chechnya intensified in the first six months of the [George H.W.] Bush presidency. [But the] 9/11 attacks led to a complete reversal of U.S. policy on Chechnya. This was partly a moral revulsion against the associations between some Chechen rebels and al-Qaida, and partly a concession by the U.S. to secure Russian support for its campaign against the Taliban regime in Afghanistan in 2002 and for the war in Iraq in 2003. … After 9/11, Putin’s framing of Chechnya as part of the “global war on terror” has been incorporated into Western policy approaches to Chechnya, and Chechen groups and leaders have been placed on the U.S. and UN lists of terrorist organizations.

Britian and France once again trying to stir the pot and escalate the violence in Syria.

Britain and France said Thursday that they have credible evidence that Syria has employed nerve agents on more than one occasion within its borders since December. In letters to U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon this week, the two European governments said soil samples and interviews with witnesses and opposition sources supported claims that government forces had used the chemical weapons in and around the cities of Aleppo, Homs and possibly the capital, Damascus.

Let's see, soil samples and the testimony of rebel sources. That should be convincing enough to up the ante as far as providing military support to the rebels.

Did they interview govenment sources that say it was the rebels that used the chem weapons. Naw, they would only lie anyways.

What about the government troops that were injured by the chemical weapons. Merely, a false flag charge. Those troops were just victims of friendly fire.

    Seems obvious.

  57. “It was Hitler’s belief that the war from the air would terrorise London into defeat. He was wrong. The city’s inhabitants, on the contrary, took a perverse and particular pleasure from being the front line of the war. ‘We can take it’ became the catchphrase of the Blitz. ”Jon E Lewis, London:

Every so often, London’s landscape becomes drastically transformed – and it’s not always of Londoners’ choosing. Just like the Great Fire nearly 300 years before, the Blitz during World War II totally decimated parts of the capital. This time, however, it was no accident.
By September 1940, London had already experienced German bombing. But the Blitz started in earnest on the afternoon of 7 September when the German Luftwaffe filled the skies in the first major daytime raid on London. Nearly 350 German bombers (escorted by over 600 fighters) dropped explosives on East London, targeting the docks in particular. Around 450 people died and 1,300 were seriously injured.

The night-time raids that followed were just as terrible and deadly. Night after night, for nearly two months, the bombers returned. The Strand, the West End and Piccadilly were attacked. St Thomas’s Hospital, St Paul’s Cathedral, Buckingham Palace, Lambeth Palace and the House of Commons were all hit. Between September and November, almost 30,000 bombs were dropped on London. In the first 30 days, almost 6,000 people were killed and twice as many badly injured.

The most notorious raid took place on Sunday 29 December. The focus this time was the City of London. The area from Aldersgate to Cannon Street and Cheapside to Moorgate went up in flames. Nineteen churches, including 16 built by Christopher Wren after the Great Fire of London, were destroyed. Miraculously, however, St Paul’s survived. Of the 34 guild halls, 31 were decimated. And when Paternoster Row, centre of London’s publishing industry, was destroyed, around 5 million books were lost.

In the end, around one third of the City was laid to waste. However, many of the main businesses streets, such as Cornhill and Lombard Street, suffered little damage and the Bank of England and the Stock Market were not hit.

The air raids continued sporadically, with major raids on 16 and 19 April 1941. More than 1,000 people were killed on each night in various areas across the capital. Finally, on 10 May, bombs fell on Kingsway, Smithfield, Westminster and across the City, killing almost 3,000 and hitting the Law Courts, the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, many of London’s museums and the House of Commons. The Blitz only ended in May 1941 when the German Luftwaffe were redeployed to take part in the invasion of Russia.

CNSNews.com) – On the last day of testimony before the prosecution rests in the murder trial of abortionist Kermit Gosnell, a former worker at Gosnell's clinic testified that she saw one late-term baby who survived an abortion "swimming" in a toilet and "trying to get out."

Kareema Cross, a “medical assistant” who worked at Gosnell’s Women’s Medical Society clinic for four-and-a-half years, testified in a Philadelphia court today, telling of the horrors of babies who survived abortions only to have their necks snipped with scissors.

“Did you ever see those babies move?” asked Prosecutor Joanne Pescatore.

“Yes, once in the toilet,” said Cross.

The baby “was like swimming,” she said. “Basically, trying to get out.”

Adrienne Moton, an employee at the clinic, then took the baby and snipped the back of its neck while the mother was still in the room.

  66. Secretary of State John Kerry plans to announce more non-lethal aid to Syrian rebels today at a meeting of groups fighting to oust President Bashar al-Assad, as U.S. lawmakers press the Obama administration to provide military help for the insurrection.

The latest assistance could include humanitarian supplies, military vehicles, night-vision goggles and communications equipment, according to an administration official who asked not to be identified before the plan is announced. That type of aid falls short of the weaponry or military engagement sought by some Democratic and Republican members of Congress.

Administration officials acknowledged in April 17 congressional testimony that
efforts to unify the opposition’s political factions haven’t succeeded and that their understanding of rebel military forces has deteriorated as extremist groups fighting Assad, such as the al-Qaeda-linked al- Nusra Front, have gotten stronger.

    ...
The same day, General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the Senate Armed Services Committee that, in distinguishing moderate rebel military groups from radicals, it’s “actually more confusing on the opposition side today than it was six months ago.”
    ‘More Concerned’

Dempsey had urged arming the opposition, along with former Central Intelligence Agency Director David Petraeus and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

“Now that we’ve seen the emergence of al-Nusra and Ahrar al-Sham, notably,” Dempsey said April 17, referring to Islamist groups, “and now that we’ve seen photographs of some of the weapons that have been flowing into Syria in the hands of those groups, now I am more concerned than I was before.”

“We must do more to tip the balance in favor of the Syrian opposition,” Royce said April 17.

The Defense Department is assessing options for military intervention, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel told Levin’s committee on April 17.

The administration remains opposed to taking that step, because it could hinder humanitarian assistance, strain international alliances, pull the U.S. into a long military commitment, and

“have the unintended consequences of bringing the United States into a broader regional conflict or proxy war,”
      Hagel said.

    1. Counterterror officials believe the brothers were Islamic extremists. And the information available so far suggests that they appeared to integrate well into U.S. society, yet slid into a spiral of Islamic radicalization with bloody results. The profile has similarities to the home-grown terrorists behind attacks in Madrid in 2004 and London in 2005, according to counterterror officials.
      ...
There are signs that the brothers showed interest in the conflict in Syria, which has drawn al Qaida fighters and other militants from across the Muslim world and Europe, according to a U.S. counterterror official. Like others interviewed for this story, the official requested anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the ongoing case.

The brothers had viewed videos about the plight of Syrian Muslims, the official said. Syria is the latest hotspot on the world map of jihad. Holy warriors a decade ago were inspired by videos about brutal combat between jihadis and Russian troops in the brothers' family homeland: the predominantly Muslim region of Chechnya, a breeding ground for al Qaida fighters in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
      ...
"It's like London, it's like Madrid in the radicalization," the counterterror official said. "These guys were produced by the international jihadist machine. The biggest thing is they were individuals willing to die. They were committed. There was interest in events overseas affecting Muslims. And a lot of Internet activity — the things that everyone in the counterterror community worries about."

The brothers had traveled in recent years to Russia, officials said. Tamerlan returned via New York from a trip to Moscow in July 2012, according to a U.S. law enforcement official. But officials said nothing so far indicates recent travel to Chechnya, in southern Russia, or war zones where terrorist groups provide training and direction to Western recruits.

"The big question is, are they part of a bigger network or just two brothers who decided to do this and pulled it off on their own?"

Start with Chalmers Johnson, John Pilger, Robert Fisk, Noam Chomsky, Michael Parenti, George Galloway.. Or, better yet, read Osama bin Laden’s own words.

Here’s one example: Allowing 500,000 Iraqi children in the 90s (which former Sec. Albright said was acceptable) to die from water contamination—preventable if we allowed chlorine to enter the country—might be something that people in that area would be a little upset over.

Life in Boston today from reports,

City shut down, transportation systems shut down, schools closed, sports events cancelled, people ordered to stay in their houses, 9000 police on the streets, convoys of armored vehicles, homes peppered with bullets from firefights...

    One acccount...

From The Post’s Mary Beth Sheridan:

Watertown, Mass. — Samantha Piccaluga, a 23-year-old university student, said that at about 3:30 p.m. Friday, jittery police whipped out their guns and rushed toward a man who appeared to come out of a house on Dexter Street in Watertown, near where the shootings had occurred in the early morning.

The neighborhood has been cordoned off by police, who have ordered residents to stay inside.

“They’re yelling, ‘Why did you get out of your house,’” Piaccaluga said, as she watched the drama unfold from her upstairs window on nearby Nichols Avenue. Angry, cursing police were “in his face,” she said. They then slapped handcuffs on the man, who was about 40 years old and was wearing a T-shirt, she said, and then began interviewing him.

Piccaluga had spent a sleepless night after violence that had unfolded near her doorstep.

“I was sleeping — it was like 1 a.m. — and I heard pah pah pah pah pah. I went to my sister, I said I think it’s gunshots. She said, no its fireworks. Then I heard a boom … then I heard cop cars, to my street, and other streets. A lot of sirens. Then a lot of shooting again, pah pah pah pah,” she recounted by telephone.

Heavily armed SWAT forces then swept into the neighborhood, she said. Police went door-to-door looking for a suspect in the Boston bombings.

Early in the morning, she said, she saw officers bring a nude, handcuffed man down the street and put him into a patrol car. “He was completely naked, no underwear,” she said, adding that police brought the man a blanket. At around 4 a.m., the man was taken out of the car and apparently transferred away in an ambulance, she said. She said she did not know who the man was.

Piccaluga said she, her sister and her uncle, who live with her, were terrified.

“Oh, yeah. Us, we’re like really scared,” said Piccaluga. “My sister just gave birth three months go. The baby’s crying, we’re worried, we don’t understand,”

  81. Boston Bombing Suspects’ Parents: Our Sons Were Set Up

The heartbroken parents of the Boston bombings suspects refuse to believe that their ‘angelic’ sons could possibly be cold-hearted killers. Here, read how they emotionally defend the sons they believe are innocent.

First, the suspects’ father Anzor Tsarnaev called his son “a true angel.” Now, both Anzor and the suspects’ mother Zubeidat K. Tsarnaeva are positive that their sons Tamerlan Tsarnaev and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev were set up by the secret service.

Anzor Tsarnaev — Suspects’ Father Denies Sons Are Terrorists

Anzor revealed that he thinks the secret service is behind it all, in an interview by the Russian Agency Interfax on April 19:

I learned about the incident from TV. My opinion is the [secret] service has framed my children, because they are practicing Muslims. Why did they kill Tamerlan? He was supposed to be caught alive. The younger is on the run now. He was a sophomore at a medical school in the U.S. We expected him to come home for vacation. Now I don’t know what’s going to happen. Tell you once again: I believe the [secret] service has framed my children.

Anzor got extremely angry during an interview with The Associated Press, yelling, “leave me alone, my son’s been killed!”

He explained that he spoke with Tamerlan right after the terrorist attack in Boston, asking him if he was ok. “Dad, do not worry, we did not go there. All are alive and well,” he said his son told him.
