COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

LONDON – A bomb has been detonated outside the U.S. embassy in the Turkish capital Ankara killing at least two people, according to police officials. An Associated Press journalist reported Friday seeing a body in the street in front of an embassy side entrance. It was not immediately clear what the cause of the blast was, but police now think a suicide bomber is to blame. It is also not clear how many people are injured. The two dead are thought to be security guards.

  1. Two dead to one suicide bomber is a really lousy ratio for a suicide attack.

  2. The Israelis don't wish to repeat their experiences during World War II.

They, at least, have the sense to take it seriously when people continually talk about a world without Israel.

They may even soon be called 'terrorists' around here.

    Go Israel

Hagel's Senate confirmation hearing shocks supporters
      Thomas Lifson

It got worse. Michael Hirsh of National Journal:

Perhaps one of the worst moments in a fairly bad day for Hagel came when even one of his apparent supporters, committee Chairman Carl Levin, D-Mich., was forced to restate his position for him after Hagel twice misspoke about a critical issue: whether the Obama administration would accept mere "containment" of Iran's nuclear program, rather than prevention of it. Hagel, handed a piece of paper, said, "I misspoke and said I supported the president's position on containment. If I said that, I meant to say we don't have a position on containment," Hagel said. That's when Levin interjected: "We do have a position on containment, and that is we do not favor containment."
