COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Thomas DiLorenzo on the real Abe Lincoln

45 comments:

  1. The successful deification of any politician is in a word, pathetic. In Lincoln’s case, it is truly bizarre. It has been somewhat repeated with FDR and JFK and I have no doubt will be eclipsed by the future creation of the Obama legend.

  2. Put this in your pipe and smoke it -

    Big Tobacco

As if to underscore what a scholarly whore he is capable of being, in the mid-90s DiLorenzo worked at not one but two "public policy think tanks" that churned out propaganda for the tobacco industry. The tobacco industry sought to get charities like the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society and the American Lung Association out of public advocacy like, you know, saying cigarettes can kill you, and instead confine their expenditures to research. DiLorenzo, along with another hack, authored Cancerscam: The Diversion of Federal Cancer Funds to Politics. He also wrote another hit piece during that time titled Unhealthy Charities. [7]

A comprehensive chronicle of DiLorenzo's whoring for R.J. Reynolds, Philip Morris and the Tobacco Institue can be found at the University of California, San Francisco, Legacy of Tobacco Documents Library[8]; a general search function is available at the website (ya never know who could turn up, the money's that good!).

He was formerly an affiliated lecturer of the League of the South Institute, the research arm of the pro-secession League of the South, widely considered to be a white supremicist hate group.[8] When challenged on this association, DiLorenzo has denied any lasting affiliation, noting that he only gave a few lectures there shortly after its founding.[9][10]

Where o where do you come up with this stuff. Nobody has ever heard of this nitwit but you. This matches that Jewish guy who was one step away from confinement that you put up as a reliable source on the evils of his own people.

I should mention this guy to our Doug Wilson, Pastor, Christ Church, who made himself infamous for a book he and some other moron wrote about how wonderful, wonderful, wonderful slavery was for all concerned, including the blacks.

I will look up the title of that book. I think it was something like Slavery, How It Really Was.

What then is the word for an unsuccessful attempt at the Satanization of a man who helped free several millions of people from a life not worth living?

  5. Southern slavery

Wilson's most controversial work is probably his pamphlet Southern Slavery, As It Was (ISBN 1-885767-17-X), which he wrote along with League of the South co-founder and fellow Christian minister Steve Wilkins. The pamphlet stated that "slavery produced in the South a genuine affection between the races that we believe we can say has never existed in any nation before the War or since." Historians such as Peter H. Wood, Clayborne Carson, and Bancroft Prize winner Ira Berlin condemned the pamphlet's arguments, with Wood calling them as spurious as holocaust denial.[9]

Wilson held a February 2004 conference for those who supported his ideas, such as pastor George Grant, in the University of Idaho. The University published a disclaimer distancing itself from the event, and numerous anti-conference protests took place. Wilson described critical attacks as 'abolitionist propaganda'.[9] He also has repeatedly denied any racist leanings. Wilson has described his own views as 'paleo-Confederate'. He has said his "long war" is not on behalf of white supremacy; rather, Wilson seeks to revive the memory—however rose-tinted—of eras in Western history when faith and reason seemed at one, when family, church, and the organic "community of Christians" that T. S. Eliot describes in Christianity and Culture were more powerful than the state.[10]

The Southern Poverty Law Center connects Wilson's views to the Neo-Confederate and Christian Reconstruction movements influenced by R. J. Rushdoony, concluding, "Wilson's theology is in most ways indistinguishable from basic tenets of Reconstruction." [11]

Canon Press ceased publication of Southern Slavery, As It Was when it became aware of serious citation errors in several passages authored by Wilkins.[12] Robert McKenzie, the history professor who first noticed the citation problems, described the authors as being "sloppy" rather than "malevolent."[13] Wilson reworked and redacted the arguments in the tract, and published (without Wilkins) a new set of essays under the name Black & Tan (ISBN 1-59128-032-X) after consulting with historian Eugene Genovese.[14]

Wilson addressed his views on slavery, racism, and states' rights in a 2011 interview by Canon Wired.[15]

  7. .

It appears the strength PM Netanyahu assumed he had when he called for early elections didn't quite materialize. A bit of a set-back.

Once the results are finalized, Bibi will still be PM but with a reduced margin. Any new government that is formed (if it is formed) will likely need a coalition that includes center-left parties.

In foreign policy it probably won't make much difference. Although there will now be a lot more talk about re-starting the peace process, in the end it will amount to nothing. However, the Bibster will likely be forced to pay much more attention to economic issues.

JERUSALEM (AP) - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his hard-line allies fared far worse than expected in a parliamentary election Tuesday, likely forcing him to reach across the aisle to court a popular political newcomer to cobble together a new coalition.

While Netanyahu appeared positioned to serve a third term as prime minister, the results marked a major setback for his policies and could force him to make new concessions to restart long-stalled peace talks with the Palestinians...

    2. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has a lot of confidants, and some of them are not afraid to be brutally honest, as long as you don’t identify them.

When one of them was asked what he would have done differently to prevent the Likud’s free-fall from 42 seats in the outgoing Knesset, he said: “I would have sent Netanyahu to Iceland for the duration of the campaign so he wouldn’t screw it up and lose 10 seats.”

    3. deuce your insight, as usual, misses the mark again.

there is NO argument in Israel about Iran or the Palestinians.

The election was about local economics.

Your distaste for Bibi notwithstanding. Bibi is the longest serving Prime Minister of Israel in history.

So maybe your lack of 'love" just shows what a bias YOU have....

  11. Bob, I am sure your great grandchildren’s children will be able to visit DC and find a monument on the mall with a grotesque marble statue of Obama, as ovesized, as pompous and as well located at Lincoln’s. That is how hero worship works.

The Russians recovered and demolished most of the statuary, coinage, currency, cities and streets, all monuments to Stalin, another great killer that kept his country together with mass slaughter. They proved that a free people do not need such obviously cynical thought control.

  12. "....So I got a piece of paper and a pencil, all glad and excited, and set down and wrote:

Miss Watson your runaway nigger Jim is down here two mile below Pikesville and Mr. Phelps has got him and he will give him up for the reward if you send. - HUCK FINN ....

... I felt good and all washed clean of sin for the first time I had ever felt so in my life, and I knowed I could pray now. But I didn't do it straight off, but laid the paper down and set there thinking- thinking how good it was all this happened so, and how near I come to being lost and going to hell. And went on thinking. And got to thinking over our trip down the river; and I see Jim before me, all the time; in the day, and in the night-time, sometimes moonlight, sometimes storms, and we a floating along, talking, and singing, and laughing. But somehow I couldn't seem to strike no places to harden me against him, but only the other kind.

I'd see him standing my watch on top of his'n, stead of calling me, so I could go on sleeping; and see him how glad he was when I come back out of the fog; and when I come to him agin in the swamp, up there where the feud was; and such-like times; and would always call me honey, and pet me, and do everything he could think of for me, and how good he always was; and at last I struck the time I saved him by telling the men we had smallpox aboard, and he was so grateful, and said I was the best friend old Jim ever had in the world, and the only one he's got now; and then I happened to look around, and see that paper.

It was a close place. I took it up, and held it in my hand. I was a trembling, because I'd got to decide, forever, betwixt two things, and I knowed it. I studied a minute, sort of holding my breath, and then says to myself:

'All right, then, I'll go to hell'- and tore it up."

  15. Hero-worship is strongest where there is the least regard for personal freedom and the least respect for independent thought. Independence, on an individual or state basis is a threat to all statists. History is full of the great killers and those who freely slaughtered their own to control them. Lincoln through gross incompetence or malicious indifference caused the death and suffering of hundreds of thousands of Americans. He hired a psychopathic killer, Wm. T. Sherman, to do his real dirty work. The pair deserved to be hanged.

    2. One cannot deny that Lincoln was a pivotal historical character. That old adage "History is written by the winners" springs to mind. America, and the world, would most likely be a very different place if Lincoln had allowed the South to secede. That assumes that the power really rested in his hands and upon his decisions.

I am surprised, Deuce, that you think history will lionize Obama in a similar way. I don't believe so unless something remarkable happens in his 2nd term.

  16. It is an old story. Jesus Christ was executed by Pontius Pilate, the Abraham Lincoln of Judea because Jesus preached a personal freedom and was a threat to the Roman State.

    1. According to my understanding, Jesus was not a direct threat to Roman. Pilate found no cause to execute him.
He upset the priests so much, that could whip up the people, that Pilate "washed his hands" of the sacrifice that was to take place.
