There is a passage in the Old French "Queste del Saint Graal" that epitomizes the true spirit of Western man. It tells of a day when the Knights of Arthur's court gathered in the banquet hall waiting for dinner to be served. It was a custom of that court that no meal should be served until an adventure had come to pass. Adventures came to pass in those days frequently so there was no danger of Arthur's people going hungry. On the present occasion the Grail appeared, covered with a samite cloth, hung in the air a moment, and withdrew. Everyone was exalted, and Gawain, the nephew of King Arthur, rose and suggested a vow. "I propose," he said, "that we all now set forth in quest to behold the Grail unveiled." And so it was that they agreed. Then there comes a line that, when I read it, burned itself into my mind. "They thought it would be a disgrace to go forth as a group. Each entered the forest at the point that he himself had chosen, where it was darkest, and there was no way or path."
from J. Campbell "Thou Art That" published after he died
No synagogue, no church, no mosque, just the individual and the chosen open road, there where the forest is darkest.
It's a fitting profile, as it gives no information about the 'person' whatsoever.
That is because, as a member of a group, in his case that of the Jews, which he emphasizes o so much, there is no person and he really has no identity outside that group.
One trouble about a truly pure western individual, which never did nor can exist, certainly doesn't today, is it disregards the human need and desire for some sort of community.
I suppose the best that can be hoped for is a rhythm between solitude and society.

You have had your moments with those folks who administer platforms, I am sure. Some years ago, they just up and wiped out thousands of posts on my record. About everyother year, now, I discover that I just started blogging and have 22 posts.
The question remains, as you pointed out: so what? Moreover, I have NEVER bothered to do a user profile. Like past life experiences, profiles tend to inflate, e.g. everyone seems to have been Napoleon in a past life. Oh, well...
One of Trish's great weaknesses is her inability to find a thesis and systematically develop it. She writes as she texts, in all probability. Unlike T, Trish has not cultivated the vacuous cut and paste technique of annoyance. Neither are original but, then, who is? I guess it is the degree of disingenuity and the obliviousness to how stupid that looks that is troubling.
It is amuzing that jenny uses "sweetie" and "hon" as pejuratives. I'm from DEEP in Dixie. That means I get called those things one hundred times a day. Sometimes, I am flattered :-)
...unrelated...Watch Gorbachev, today. He may be a genuine hero, after all. Putin has some hard choices to make - a new election at the top of the list.
A suspected human smuggler who has been deported 14 times was among a group of illegal immigrants arrested Monday night in Arizona, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said.
Juan Ramos-Alegria was most recently arrested one week ago in Colorado, MCSO said.
Five suspected illegal immigrants, including Ramos-Alegria, were apprehended without incident.
Sheriff's investigators said the immigrants had paid anywhere from $1,500 to $2,000 each to be smuggled into the U.S. Those arrested reported to be heading to Arkansas and Georgia as their final destination, MCSO said.
Attack at Pearl Harbor, 1941 The surprise was complete. The attacking planes came in two waves; the first hit its target at 7:53 AM, the second at 8:55. By 9:55 it was all over. By 1:00 PM the carriers that launched the planes from 274 miles off the coast of Oahu were heading back to Japan. Behind them they left chaos, 2,403 dead, 188 destroyed planes and a crippled Pacific Fleet that included 8 damaged or destroyed battleships. In one stroke the Japanese action silenced the debate that had divided Americans ever since the German defeat of France left England alone in the fight against the Nazi terror.
Approximately three hours later, Japanese planes began a day-long attack on American facilities in the Philippines. (Because the islands are located across the International Dateline, the local Philippine time was just after 5 AM on December 8.) Farther to the west, the Japanese struck at Hong Kong, Malaysia and Thailand in a coordinated attempt to use surprise in order inflict as much damage as quickly as possible to strategic targets.
Although stunned by the attack at Pearl Harbor, the Pacific Fleet's aircraft carriers, submarines and, most importantly, its fuel oil storage facilities emerged unscathed. These assets formed the foundation for the American response that led to victory at the Battle of Midway the following June and ultimately to the total destruction of the Japanese Empire four years later.
Ms Schultz, a spokesperson for Mr Obama, and a Congresswomen from Florida, is telling US that no administration in US history has ever provided so much direct aid, to Israel.
The US funding the Iron Dome defense system, at a cost of hundreds of millions.
Over $3 billion per year in direct aid.
She tells US that the GOP is lying about Mr Obama and the support for Israel that the US has provided during his tenure.
Imagine that Ms Schultz believes Ms Glick's claims, mentioned just yesterday, are without foundation.
I do think, from what she said and the way she said it, that Ms Schultz is a self identifying member of US Jewry.

Funny thing, on the Joe Starbucks Show, this very morn, the talking heads were going on about Occupying K Street and the Capital.
As part of the “Take Back the Capitol” movement that has descended upon the city this week, the protesters stood outside a tony restaurant in D.C., giving the business to lawmakers and lobbyists who tried to enter and chanting “We are the 99%!” They also crashed a steakhouse fundraiser for GOP Rep. Sam Johnson of Texas. (Watch videos below.)
The week-long protest, a variant of the Occupy movement, Tuesday involved sit-ins at congressional offices and rallies on the National Mall. The goal of the protesters, who are backed by labor unions, is legislative action on jobs.
On Wednesday, the protesters plan to return to the Capitol and then march on the lobbying offices of companies in D.C. such as Verizon and General Electric.
Unsurprisingly, I never understood his love affair with Trotsky. After some life changing moments, he abandoned that and some other things.
For instance, he discovered in 1987 that he was/is Jewish.
While I don't remember when, he has addressed the general topic and may share this particular thought:
"Liberalism is a self-liquidating proposition, and there are no liberals like Jewish liberals, who are a soon-to-be-endangered species. The sad thing is not that the liberal leadership of American Jewish organizations is complaining about Israel, but that they won't be around much longer to complain about anything."

The cultural transformation having little to do with being Liberal or conservative, but a lot to do with individuals being treated as a free agents capable of making their own life decisions.
A situation that the more puritanical Islamoids find themselves in, here in the United States. Where the tribal standards are so far removed from the American norm, that violence stemming from intolerance sometimes erupts.
But then in Seal Beach, CA that fellow shot a half dozen folks, because of his pending divorce.
Domestic violence is certainly not limited to the Islamoid honor killings.
There are multiple motives for violent social dysfunction.
One of the most interesting things about the Bible is that every one of the major Old Testament mythological themes has been found by our modern scholars in the earlier Sumero-Babylonian complex: the serpent-god, the tree in the garden of immortal life, the fashioning of mankind from clay, the deluge, and many others. I think, however, of what has happened as a result: Myths that originally had pointed to the goddess as the ultimate source are now pointing to a god!
blah,blah.....then...All of our religious symbols are thus speaking to us in double-talk. Since;, as even Saint Thomas states in his Summa "Then alone do we know God truly, when we believe that He is far above all that men can possibly think of God," it can surely not be proper to think of that which surpasses all human thought either as a male or female. In our tradition, the problem is further compounded by the image of a male God minus a wife, so that we cannot even think of divinity as transcending and subsuming sexual opposites.
J. Campbell Thou Art That
No wonder allen is so fucked up. Thinking the Jews are special, with his special relationship to G-d, as he does.(And, think of it, on the Board of Directors of the Synagogue, too!!!)
Three sunsets till Sabbath, it can't come too soon....
McLuhan understood "medium" in a broad sense. He identified the light bulb as a clear demonstration of the concept of “the medium is the message”. A light bulb does not have content in the way that a newspaper has articles or a television has programs, yet it is a medium that has a social effect; that is, a light bulb enables people to create spaces during nighttime that would otherwise be enveloped by darkness. He describes the light bulb as a medium without any content. McLuhan states that "a light bulb creates an environment by its mere presence."
The light bulb didn't go off in my head until sometime late in the 80's as to exactly how important it was what he had said.
I was sitting in a little honkey-tonk bar in Portageville, Mo when I looked up at the tv in the corner, and realized that villagers in China, Africa, the Middle East, and S. America were getting the same messages from it that I was. (Yeah, I know; I was a dullard.)
Regardless of how slow I was on the up-tick, it was my moment of epiphany. The realization that television was changing, and, going to change, the entire world.
The old WWI tune popped into my head: "How ya goin' to keep'em down on the farm, After they've seen Paree?"
An informed populace is hard to control, and, now, with satellite tv, the internet, smartphones, ipads, etc., it's harder, and harder for the elites to keep'em uninformed.
Let's face it folks; a whole lot of folks have now seen, "Paree."
Come on, think of it, a male God minus a wife, really that's a most pitiful God, or as Huck Finn just possibly might say, if he were interested in the subject, that 'taint hardly no God atall.
It takes, I think, ten male Jews, to call a proper meeting, to even discuss these deep problems, there in the Synagogue.
Though it can be said, the Catholics at least, seem to recognize, perhaps unconsciously, this lopsided divine division of labor, up there in the Trinity, with their urge to divinize mother Mary.

Europe is pretty well screwed. They are already driving very efficient vehicles (no low-hanging fruit to be had,) and they have very high taxes on fuel.
We're in better shape than Europe, because we have a lot of low-hanging fruit to harvest. We can pick up large gains in vehicle efficiency, and, unlike Europe, we have a Lot of potential to raise, and utilize, biofuels.
Rowe rushed into the operating room to prepare his patients for evacuation. The flight deck was ablaze, and Dr. Rowe made a number of trips back and forth through the sick bay, forming his group for evacuation and picking up first aid gear. Rowe's group grew to 15 men, including the ships' damage control officer, Lt. Cmdr. Welles W. 'Buzz' Carroll, who refused Rowe's offer to dress his wounds, and Liscome Bay's chaplain, Lt. j.g. Robert H. Carley.
Carroll, although weakening due to blood loss from his injuries, paced up and down the flight deck giving orders and helping men to abandon ship.
Carroll refused to leave the ship until Seaman Hunt (who had come up from below after giving up his firefighting efforts) told him that he would not leave without him. Medical officer Rowe, Carroll and Hunt all went over the side together. Once they were in the water, Hunt swam off to find a raft for the injured Carroll, while Rowe held his head out of the water. Hunt returned with a raft a short time later and asked how the commander was. Rowe looked down at the man he was holding. 'He's dead,' he said and let Carroll's body slip beneath the water.
Twenty-three minutes after the torpedo hit, Liscome Bay sank stern first, still burning furiously. 'Looking like a gigantic Fourth of July display,' said one survivor.

Can anything less possibly be said about allen, head and shoulders above us all???

Even as he surges ahead in the polls, Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich is struggling to get out from under a mountain of debt from luxury jets and other pricey expenses racked up in the early weeks of his campaign.
...
Nearly half of what Gingrich owed at the end of the third quarter was due to Moby Dick Airways, a private jet broker, which has been waiting since June for more than $451,000 from the campaign. The company arranges private charter flights for Republican politicians, speechmakers and other public figures, and it earned more than $6.6 million in business from Gingrich’s now-defunct nonprofit group, American Solutions for Winning the Future.
...
Gingrich and his aides say he has cut back on spending dramatically since the campaign’s near-collapse in June, always flying commercial and sometimes driving himself to appearances. He often stayed with friends, such as former Iowa congressman Greg Ganske, though he has recently gone back to lodging in name-brand hotels.

That's all for me tonight. I give allen the great standard of the universe the last shot.
The main thrust of the Old Testament tradition is clearly and specifically the struggle of Yahweh, one tribal deity, against all the other gods of the world -- the nature gods and all the other national gods. Many, indeed most, of the Old Testament kings, one after another, left the ways of righteousness to worship on the mountaintops, the deities of the great nature world whom everybody else was worshiping, and the priestly scribes of Yahweh's cause railed against them for this reason. Nature is a difficult power to resist. And within ourselves, as well, nature - Mother Nature - ;is a difficult power to resist. Nor is she an inferior guide to virtue and to the glory of life.
What I think history has proven is that these local social laws set against the laws of nature no longer hold as a guide to conduct, if, indeed, they ever did hold. Their whole history is of fanatic violence. In the biblical religions' unrelenting thrust against the laws of the nature religions, a tension was so built up that nature was indeed imaginatively corrupted. What a pleasure it was to live in Japan for a season where no one had heard of the Fall in the Garden!
....This brings into our religious life a type of agony that I think is peculiar to our tradition and distinctly pathological. Only in rare periods, of which the Renaissance was one, and in certain rare spiritual geniuses, do we find people within the fold of this tradition who have found a way to pass, often through fire, to a reconciliation of its jejune spiritual lore with the glories of the world of life..... Gods suppressed become demons...the power that has been chiefly supprressed in the main thrust of our tradition is that which in most of the world is represented in the image of the great Goddess. Called in the Bible the 'abomination'.
J. Campbell (who didn't like the idea of a split between creature and creator) Thou Art That
But the very imagery of the Bible is itself derived from an earlier mythological context in which the Goddess is supreme. Her imagery and that of the nature deities, he children, have been appropriated and transformed to accord with a strictly and ruthlessly patriarchal, male dominated tradition, (this is the reason you have to have 10 Jewish males to have a meeting) all the symbols of which consequently are turned topsy-turvy.
Who, for example, wants Abraham's bosom? Who ever heard of man giving birth to a woman, as Adam to Eve? There is in all of this symbol making and storytelling a deliberate campaign of seduction, turning the mind and heart from the female to the male - that is to say, from the laws of nature to the laws of the local tribe....
Meanwhile in the Christian fold it has surely been a great triumph for Mary that in spite of the bibliolatrous Protestant community - for whom Mariolatry has pretty much the same meaning as the "Abomination" had for Elijah - she has been able to advance further and further into the orbit of true divinity.
Well, let's hope that Mary finally attains her proper place in things. And that the women in the orthodox areas of Jerusalem no longer need to ride at the back of the bus.
The imagery of rebirth is of two main orders. The moon which dies and is resurrected is the chief symbol of this miracle of rebirth in time. The moon sheds its shadow as the serpent does its skin. The serpent also plays a role as the symbol of this same principle of the life that is reborn from its own death. In traditional mythologies, the sacrificial bull, too, is associated with this symbolism of death and rebirth. The horns of the moon are rendered in the horns of the bull. The sacrifice of the bull is symbolic of the sacrifice of that mortal part in us which leads to the release of the eternal.
The sun is our second symbol of rebirth, evoking that idea of not coming back at all, of not being reborn here but of passing beyond the spheres of rebirth altogether to a transcendent light. The typical image for this is the sun. The moon carries darkness within it but wherever the sun goes there is no darkness. There are only the shadows of those forces that do not open themselves to its light. The image of the sun-door speaks of yet another kind of rebirth, that of the return of the lost one - that is, the one who is lost in the spheres of shadows and time, who returns to that eternal root which is his own great root.
As the bull is symbolic of the moon, so the lion, with his great radiant solar face, is the symbolic animal of the sun. As the rising sun quenches the moon and the stars, so the lion's roar scatters the grazing animals, just as the lion's pouncing on the bull symbolizes the sun's extinguishing the moon. If we recall the serpent, we recognize the eagle, the solar bird, as its counterpoint. So we have these parallels: eagle against serpent, lion against bull, sun against moon.
When you realize that eternity is right here now, that it is within your possibility to experience the eternity of your own truth and being, then you grasp the following: That which you are was never born and will never die; that is the insight rendered in terms of the solar mystery, the solar light.
In contrast to ours, the whole aim of the Oriental religions is to bring about in us an experience of our identity with that void which is no-void. The goal of these religions is to bring about a realization of this your identity with that which flows to you as experience.
To set the normal way of the west against this, we say God created the world and God and the world are not the same, Creator and creature are not the same, so our religions do not strive for the experience of identity. Our religions intend the rendition off a relationship of that which is not God to God achieved through participation in what is taken to be God's society, the synagogue, the founded church, the mosque. In the Hebrew tradition, God has a covenant with a certain people and the relationship to God is through membership in that group. In the Christian tradition, Christ is true God and true Man, which is regarded as a mystery at the center of the Church's claims.
Can we see this kind of symbolism in the bullfight, where the horned bull is the moon, and the bullfighter in his suit of lights is the transcendent sun? I only ask.
Yes, the USS Arizona is still leaking 'Bunker-C' oil. I just looked it up.

ReplyDeletePHOENIX (KPHO) -
A suspected human smuggler who has been deported 14 times was among a group of illegal immigrants arrested Monday night in Arizona, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said.
Other Targets on December 7
ReplyDeleteAttack at Pearl Harbor, 1941
The surprise was complete.
(Because the islands are located across the International Dateline, the local Philippine time was just after 5 AM on December 8.)
Farther to the west, the Japanese struck at Hong Kong, Malaysia and Thailand
in a coordinated attempt to use surprise in order inflict as much damage as quickly as possible to strategic targets.

Funny thing, on the Joe Starbucks Show, this very morn, the talking heads were going on about Occupying K Street and the Capital.
ReplyDeleteAs part of the “Take Back the Capitol” movement that has descended upon the city this week, the protesters stood outside a tony restaurant in D.C., giving the business to lawmakers and lobbyists who tried to enter and chanting “We are the 99%!”
They also crashed a steakhouse fundraiser for GOP Rep.

ReplyDeleteblah,blah.....then...All of our religious symbols are thus speaking to us in double-talk.

Marshall McLuhand nailed it in 1964.
ReplyDeleteMcLuhan understood "medium" in a broad sense.

USS Liscome Bay RIP
ReplyDeleteRowe rushed into the operating room to prepare his patients for evacuation. The flight deck was ablaze, and Dr. Rowe made a number of trips back and forth through the sick bay, forming his group for evacuation and picking up first aid gear. Rowe's group grew to 15 men, including the ships' damage control officer, Lt. Cmdr. Welles W. 'Buzz' Carroll, who refused Rowe's offer to dress his wounds, and Liscome Bay's chaplain, Lt. j.g. Robert H. Carley.
ReplyDeleteCarroll, although weakening due to blood loss from his injuries, paced up and down the flight deck giving orders and helping men to abandon ship.

Jews do not believe in Hell.
The Judeo/Christian as pathological --
ReplyDeleteThe main thrust of the Old Testament tradition is clearly and specifically the struggle of Yahweh, one tribal deity, against all the other gods of the world -- the nature gods and all the other national gods.

ReplyDeleteWho, for example, wants Abraham's bosom?

ReplyDeleteThe sun is our second symbol of rebirth, evoking that idea of not coming back at all, of not being reborn here but of passing beyond the spheres of rebirth altogether to a transcendent light.

ReplyDeleteWhen you realize that eternity is right here now, that it is within your possibility to experience the eternity of your own truth and being, then you grasp the following: That which you are was never born and will never die; that is the insight rendered in terms of the solar mystery, the solar light.

I only ask.
