COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

  3. Seeking to rally his struggling party, Obama cast Democrats as warriors for the hard-pressed middle class and Republicans as protectors of millionaires and special interests.

Asked how he had changed Washington, Obama said the dreadful economy made it hard to demonstrate real progress.

"I think that's fair. I'm as frustrated as anybody by it," Obama said.

  4. Pay Up, Suckers!

Privacy laws prevent release of individual tax delinquents' names. But we do know that as of the end of 2009, 41 people inside Obama's very own White House owe the government they're allegedly running a total of $831,055 in back taxes. That would cover a lot of special chocolate desserts in the White House Mess.

In the House of Representatives, 421 people owe a total $6,524,892.

In the Senate, 217 owe $2,774,836.

In the IRS' parent department, Treasury, 1,204 owe $7,670,814.

At the Labor Department, where Secretary Hilda Solis' husband had some back-tax problems before her confirmation, 463 owe $7,481,463.

Eighty-one workers for the Federal Reserve System's board of governors owe $1,076,733.

Over at the Justice Department, which is so busy enforcing other laws and suing Arizona, 1,971 employees still owe $14,350,152 in overdue taxes.

Then, we come to the Department of Homeland Security, which is run by Janet Napolitano, the former governor of Arizona.

Within that department, there reside 4,856 people who owe the tax agency a whopping total of $37,012,174.

"Let them eat cake" is the traditional translation of the French phrase "Qu'ils mangent de la brioche", supposedly spoken by a French princess upon learning that the peasants had no bread. As brioche is a luxury bread enriched with eggs and butter, it would reflect the princess's obliviousness to the nature of a famine.

Although commonly attributed to Queen Marie Antoinette,[1] there is no record of these words ever having been uttered by her; they first appear in Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Confessions, his putative autobiographical work (completed in 1769, when Marie Antoinette was 13), where he wrote the following in Book 6:

Enfin je me rappelai le pis-aller d’une grande princesse à qui l’on disait que les paysans n’avaient pas de pain, et qui répondit : Qu’ils mangent de la brioche.

Finally I recalled the last resort of a great princess who was told that the peasants had no bread, and who responded: "Let them eat brioche."

Rousseau does not name the "great princess" and there is speculation that he invented the anecdote, which has no other sources.[2]

In Chinese culture, there is a variation of this story that involves rice and meat, instead of bread and cake.[3]

  7. Dems Could Lose 8 Empire State Seats in US House

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- For all the Democrats' strength and swagger in New York, the party could lose as many as eight U.S. House seats in the Empire State alone in November.

The top of the Democratic ticket is formidable. Attorney General Andrew Cuomo enjoys a hefty, double-digit lead in polling for the governor's race and Sen. Charles Schumer is cruising to a third term against token opposition. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, an appointed replacement for Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, is far head in the polls after initially being tagged as vulnerable.

Gillibrand is expected to easily capture the party nomination in Tuesday's primary, and all three top Democrats stand as prohibitive favorites in a state where registered Democratic voters outnumber Republican 2-to-1. Complicating the GOP prospects, Republicans don't have a single A-list name running statewide this year.

But recession-weary voters are unlikely to be as kind to some of the lower-profile New York Democrats who now control 26 of the state's 29 seats in the U.S. House.

Democrats captured seven of their eight at-risk House seats in the 2006 and 2008 elections, when they made gains in suburban and upstate districts that had long been dominated by Republicans.

Guiterrez said a representative from the utility was in the neighborhood last week and told people to shut their garage doors and stay inside as they looked into the complaint.

  26. What is proposed is not a mosque -- nor even an "Islamic cultural center."

In fact, the proposed structure is known in Islamic history as a rabat -- literally a connector. The first rabat appeared at the time of the Prophet.

The Prophet imposed his rule on parts of Arabia through a series of ghazvas, or razzias (the origin of the English word "raid"). The ghazva was designed to terrorize the infidels, convince them that their civilization was doomed and force them to submit to Islamic rule. Those who participated in the ghazva were known as the ghazis, or raiders.

After each ghazva, the Prophet ordered the creation of a rabat -- or a point of contact at the heart of the infidel territory raided. The rabat consisted of an area for prayer, a section for the raiders to eat and rest and facilities to train and prepare for future razzias. Later Muslim rulers used the tactic of ghazva to conquer territory in the Persian and Byzantine empires. After each raid, they built a rabat to prepare for the next razzia.

It is no coincidence that Islamists routinely use the term ghazva to describe the 9/11 attacks against New York and Washington. The terrorists who carried out the attack are referred to as ghazis or shahids (martyrs).

Thus, building a rabat close to Ground Zero would be in accordance with a tradition started by the Prophet. To all those who believe and hope that the 9/11 ghazva would lead to the destruction of the American "Great Satan," this would be of great symbolic value.

Faced with the anger of New Yorkers, the promoters of the project have started calling it the Cordoba House, echoing President Obama's assertion that it would be used to propagate "moderate" Islam.

    ---

A rabat in the heart of Manhattan would be of great symbolic value to those who want a high-profile, "in your face" projection of Islam in the infidel West.

  35. Thanks So Much!

For only the second time in my adult life, I am not ashamed of my country. I want to thank the hard working American people for paying $242 thousand dollars plus additional expenses for my vacation in Spain.

My daughter Sasha, several long-time family friends, my personal staff and various guests had a wonderful time. Honestly, you just haven't lived until you have stayed in a $2,500.00 per night suite at a 5-Star luxury hotel. We only booked 70 rooms for our friends, staff and family.

Thank you also for the use of Air Force 2 and the 70 Secret Service personnel who tagged along to be sure we were safe and cared for at all times.

Air Force 2 only used 47,500 gallons of jet fuel for this trip and carbon emissions were a mere 1,031 tons of CO2. It costs only $11,500 per hour to operate Air Force 2 and each additional plane for the other members of our party group. These are only rough estimates, but they are close (who's counting?). That's quite a carbon footprint as my good friend Al Gore would say, so we must ask the American citizens to drive smaller, more fuel efficient cars and drive less too, so we can lessen our combined carbon footprint.

I know times are hard and millions of you are struggling to put food on the table and trying to make ends meet. I do appreciate your sacrifice and do hope you find work soon. I was really exhausted after Barack took our family on a luxury vacation in Maine a few weeks ago. I just had to get away for a few days. Will write more from Martha's Vineyard where we will spend our sixth vacation this year with more of our family and friends.

    Cordially,

This episode reveals the gulf between us and the Islamic world. Despite all our talk of universal values, tens of millions of Muslims, in countries not only hostile but friendly, believe that a sacrilege against their faith, like the burning of the Quran by a single American oddball, justifies the killing of Americans. What kind of compatibility can there be between us?

    ReplyDelete
  45. If it was a single American odd ball, that'd be one thing. But the "War on Islam" storyline is not a singularity, not by any means.

I read about this "War", here, almost every day. This Florida episode is only the latest installment in a continuing televised and written serial.

Our Presidents continue to tell US that we are looking for the perpetrators of attacks and conspiracies against US. On 11SEP2001 and at other venues and times. Attacks perpetrated by oddballs and religious fanatics.

As were the attacks by Dr. Theodore John "Ted" Kaczynski, Timothy McVeigh and the behavior of David Koresh and his followers in Waco.

While Yaakov "Jack" Teitel bombed a Messianic Jewish family, a club full of homosexual Israelis and killed two Palestinians and there has been no denunciation of Orthodox Judaism as "hateful" or "evil".

    Nor should there have been.

Crimes are committed by individuals and conspirators involved in terror cells, they do not represent the entirety of their religions or countries. Yaakov "Jack" Teitel being both born in the US and a resident of Israel since 2000.

His behavior does not indict the US, Israel or Judaism, or does it?

The same impulses that drive many here in the US to declare that we are "At War with Islam" drive the Afghans to extreme measures against US, there in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan's history is replete with examples of insults against religion -- real or imagined -- fueling uprisings against foreign powers. The Quran burning threat is just the latest.

It is the US that is occupying Afghanistan, not the Afghans occupying NYCity. It is up to US to maintain a higher level of discretion, or leave those folks to their own devices.

Which is what I would recommend we do, as soon as possible.

I agree that statistical outliers jump out of any mix.

And I (have come to) agree that these particular troublemakers should be treated as common criminals, with the emphasis on common.

Where I disagree with the idea of 'religious fanatics' is the degree to which Islam is a religion with it's usual complement of religious fanatics - or whether it is a collection of fanatics finding common ground in a loosely constructed set of beliefs being labelled a religion.

That set of beliefs, constituting what we call Islam, cannot be dignified with the label of religion.

I could go on but that's the gist of it.
