Poland's Kaczynski Invokes Nazis as EU Refugee Clash Deepens

Poland’s ruling party hardened its position against refugees, saying the nation’s past, including the Nazi invasion in World War II, give it a moral claim to continue to receive European Union development funds regardless of its stance on immigrants.

Jaroslaw Kaczynski, head of the ruling Law & Justice Party and the power behind Prime Minister Beata Szydlo’s government, also said Poland had a right to assistance because it opened its markets to richer Western economies before joining the EU in 2004.

Speaking at his party’s conference in the central Polish town of Przysucha on Saturday before this week’s visit by U.S. President Donald Trump, Kaczynski doubled down on an anti-refugee message that has worsened ties with Brussels while helping revive flagging support at home. Already facing criticism that his government is backsliding on democracy, Kaczynski rejected suggestions by western leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, that EU members may suffer economic consequences if they don’t uphold the bloc’s values.


“We appreciate EU funds very much, as they’ve enabled much needed investments, but the fact that we appreciate them doesn’t mean that we lose rights to our views on historical and economic context,” Kaczynski told about 1,000 party members to loud applause. “Poland was the first country that opposed Nazi Germany, followed by the invasion of the totalitarian Soviet regime. Have we been compensated for that? No.”

The country of 38 million people is by far the biggest recipient of EU funds, with it set to get more than 250 billion euros ($286 billion). That’s the equivalent in today’s dollars of more than the U.S.-funded Marshall Plan provided to all of western Europe after World War II.


Halfway through its four-year term, Law & Justice has renewed its vow to “protect” Poles from immigration and keep them safe from terrorist attacks. It has rejected a plan under which its predecessor agreed to host about 7,000 immigrants from the Middle East and Africa to help tackle the worst migration crisis since World War II.

‘Social Disaster’

“Nobody will force us to accept a social disaster because we receive EU funds,” Kaczynski said. “You all know I’m talking about immigrants who are flooding Europe. There’s no reason for us to lower our standard of life.”

Combined with generous social handouts to parents with multiple children and a pledge to return Poland to its Catholic roots, the anti-immigration pledge has kept the party atop opinion polls. It had support of 42 percent of voters, compared with 21 percent for the biggest opposition party, the Civic Platform, according to a June 8 survey by CBOS.

The stance hasn’t come without consequences. The European Commission has launched infringement procedures against Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic for rejecting refugee quotas, highlighting a divide in the 28-member trading bloc after anti-immigrant political parties lost French, Dutch and Austrian elections earlier this year.

Questioning EU solidarity may turn out to be short-sighted if the conflict in Ukraine escalates and Poland needs help to cope with a real flood of refugees, according to Ryszard Schnepf, Poland’s former ambassador in the U.S from 2012 to 2016.

“Reheating the issue of war damages, even if meant for domestic political consumption, is dangerous as it may open Pandora’s box,” Schnepf said on Monday. “What if the other side starts questioning post-war treaties with Poland?”

Polish Truckers

Finance Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, who’s in charge of economic policy, also criticized comments last week from Macron, who scolded some eastern members for treating the EU as a “supermarket” by accepting aid but not upholding all of its ideals.

Morawiecki, an advocate of a bigger state role in the economy, said richer countries can’t complain that cheap Polish workers have entered their markets when their businesses operate in Poland and crowd out local competitors. He has orchestrated the “repolonization” of the nation’s banks, buying the nation’s second-biggest lender from Italy’s UniCredit SpA in a deal that was completed last month.

“There are many Polish truck drivers in parking lots near Paris or Amsterdam, but there are also many French supermarkets, Dutch banks, and media companies controlled by Germans on the streets of Polish towns,” Morawiecki said, to loud applause. “We would eagerly swap.”

    Austria has deployed armoured vehicles close to its border with Italy and will send up to 750 soldiers to block any migrants trying to head north, the government announced.

    The move reflects deep concern in Vienna and elsewhere in Europe over the huge number of asylum seekers who continue to cross the Mediterranean from Libya – so far this year more than 85,000 have been rescued and brought to Italy.

    But it prompted a rebuke from Rome, with the Italian foreign ministry summoning Austria’s ambassador to explain the beefing up of border security. Italy has warned in the past that such measures would contravene EU rules on free movement.

    Austria said it would ramp up border controls at the Brenner Pass, a key trade and transport route through the Alps that connects the two countries. "We are ready to protect our Brenner border if necessary,” said Sebastian Kurz, the Austrian foreign minister.

    The 750 soldiers could be rushed to the border within 72 hours if there was a migration emergency, officials said. "I expect border controls will be introduced very soon," Peter Doskozil, the defence minister, told the newspaper Kronen Zeitung.......

    When a Muslim doctor arrived in a rural Midwestern town, “it felt right.” But that feeling began to change after the election of Donald Trump.

    He glanced at his outline and made the point that of course ­Islam has its zealots, and he condemns them.

    “But that’s not what we’re talking about,” he said. “Because if you say, ‘That’s Islam,’ then that’s like me saying, ‘Well, Christianity is David Kor­esh,’ ” he said, referring to the cult leader.

    He began pacing a bit. People were listening.

    “Do you guys know who the LRA is?” he said, referring to the Lord’s Resistance Army, the cultish Ugandan rebel group blamed for the deaths of more than 100,000 people. “How many of you knew about that? I want you to raise your hands.”

    Two hands went up.

    “How come you don’t know about that?” Ayaz said. “How come only Islam has terrorism? The KKK had 5 million members in the 1920s. Lynching of black people was normal. It was routine. Why don’t we look at ourselves, too, as well as others? You have alternative facts? Then go to a different lecture.”

    No one was getting up to leave.

    “So, the purpose of today is to know one another,” Ayaz continued, going back to the outline.

    He quoted Koran verses to explain how there is no compulsion to convert people to Islam, how extremists who believe that “hate me more than they hate you,” and how Islam means peace, and soon, he began to veer.

    “So Islam is not what you see on TV, okay?” he said. “I know Fox News. It’s not news. It’s the WWF, okay? Don’t use them as my spokesperson. When you say, ‘These people are animals and we have to blow them up,’ don’t say, ‘This is Islam.’ It’s not. And 99.9 percent of us will agree we need to condemn these people and it hurts us even more because they’re saying that God said this? Muhammad said this? Never in a million years.”

    His voice was rising. He was getting angry. Mandy looked at him.

    “Breathe, breathe,” she said.

  6. Armed 11-year-old boy saves fishing party from charging bear

    Quick action from a Hoonah boy saved a fishing party from a charging brown bear on June 18, the Empire has learned through Alaska State Troopers and family members.


    It was the first Defense of Life or Property (DLP) killing in the Hoonah area this year, according to trooper spokesperson Megan Peters.

    When the attack occurred, Elliot Clark, then 11 years old, was walking through the woods near Game Creek in Port Frederick several miles south of Hoonah. The young outdoorsman was heading to a nearby fishing hole with his uncle, Craig Stoltzfus, Stoltzfus’ father, a cousin and three dogs.

    Stoltzfus and Elliot Clark were armed when a brown bear came out of the woods, charging the group head on. The other members of the party were not armed.

    Lucas Clark, Elliot’s father and himself a bear hunting guide, told the story in a Tuesday phone interview with the Empire. Elliot Clark declined to be interviewed at this time.

    Lucas Clark was in Washington state at the time of the attack, but his account squares with that from Alaska State Troopers, who investigate DLP killings in Alaska. Stoltzfus couldn’t be reached for this story.

    “There was four of them in a line … my son was third,” Clark said. “The bear came down the trail at them, fella in the front, who was his uncle, the bear was on him so quickly that he didn’t have time to take his rifle off his shoulder.”

    The bear ran through the first two men, who were pushed to the side of the trail, leaving Elliot Clark in front of his unarmed cousin. The boy raised his pump action shotgun and shot the sow, hitting it with birdshot, which is often used just to scare bears off, Lucas Clark said.

    “His first shot was a light load of birdshot. That first shot hit him in the shoulder and did absolutely nothing. The next shot hit him in the nose and traveled down through the neck,” Lucas Clark said.

    The third shot went into the bear’s shoulder and his back, dropping it to the ground. The bear was so close when Elliot hit it with his third shot, there were powder burns on the bear’s mouth. Still alive, the bear then slid by Elliot’s feet.

    “As the bear slid past him and came to a stop, he put a kill shot it him,” Lucas Clark said.

    Stoltzfus finished it off with another round.

    The moment could have turned out differently. Lucas Clark hadn’t gotten around to putting a sling on his son’s shotgun, leaving the 11-year-old to carry it in his hands. He credits this and a lot of shooting practice with preparing Elliot for the moment.

    “He was carrying it in his hands rather than on his shoulder. That was the problem with the other ones, when the bear came at his uncle, he had his rifle on his shoulder and the bear was very close, so he couldn’t get it off in time,” Lucas Clark said.

    Just the day before, Elliot still had a plug in his shotgun, meaning his gun only carried three rounds: the “topround” of birdshot and two slugs. He had taken the plug out the day before, Lucas Clark said, after calling his father to ask permission to do so.

    The family had seen bear in the area for a few days, and had been carrying guns for protection.

  7. It’s a bad year for bears, conservation official say, as the long winter and heavy snow pack covered up food for months.

    In Maple Ridge, though, fewer bears are being killed.

    So far this year, only one bear has been killed. That happened June 24 along 232nd Street near Yennadon elementary because the bear had become too accustomed to easy trash food.

  8. CHURCHILL, CANADA — A video of a polar bear petting a dog in Canada went viral last week. But what appeared to be evidence of a heartwarming interspecies friendship turned out to be just another predator playing with his food.

    The video was shot at the Mile 5 Dog Sanctuary in Manitoba, where owner Brian Ladoon claims his Canadian eskimo dogs have a special relationship with the arctic beasts, reports the CBC. In reality, Ladoon has been feeding the bears for years to dissuade them from picking off his dogs.

    But it’s illegal to feed polar bears, since it emboldens them to seek out human communities for food, making attacks more common. Ladoon learned this the hard way one night when he forgot to put out food for the bears.

    Just hours after playing nice with one puppy, the very same polar bear now saw another dog as a big pile of chow. And since Ladoon keeps the sled dogs on his property chained there was no stopping the hungry bear from digging in.

    The animal was later taken away by conservation officers and put in a holding facility. Another bear and her cub were removed as well, since they too were reportedly being fed.

    1. Last time I was at my favorite fishing stream the owner of the resort said to watch out for bears in the 'town', which consists of the resort and two home and an RV park now.

      The bears had been coming in checking out the garbage cans, and strolling around a bit.

      Black bears.

      Saw a cougar mom and her cougar kids on the way home. Little cougars are too cute to describe.

    Tillerson will defer to Russia on survival of President Assad

    This is not entirely unexpected, but nevertheless, represents a clean break with the Obama administration and, indeed, American history.

    Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told UN chief Antonio Guterres during a private State Department meeting last week that it was up to Russia to decide the fate of President Bashar Assad in post civil war Syria. By washing the US hands of Assad's fate, Tillerson is sending a clear signal that the US will not concern itself with the shape of a post war government and society in Syria.


    Foreign Policy:

    Tillerson’s assurances to Guterres signaled the Trump administration’s increasing willingness to let Russia take the driver’s seat in Syria, throwing geopolitics to the wayside to focus on defeating ISIS.

    He also signaled that U.S. military action against Assad’s forces in recent months is intended to achieve only limited tactical goals–deterring future chemical weapons attacks and protecting U.S. backed-forces fighting the Islamic State in Syria–not weakening the Assad government or strengthening the opposition’s negotiating leverage.

    Tillerson’s position reflects a recognition that Syria’s government, backed by Russia and Iran, is emerging as the likely political victor in the country’s six year long civil war. It also marks a further retreat from the 2012 U.N.-brokered Geneva Communique — signed by Russia, the United States, and other key powers — which called for the establishment of a transitional government with members of the regime and the opposition. The Geneva pact, according to the Obama administration and other Western allies, was to result in Assad’s departure from power. (Though the Obama administration softened its own demand that Assad step down during its final year in power).

    A State Department official declined to comment on Tillerson’s private discussion with Guterres, but insisted that the U.S. remains “committed to the Geneva process” and supports a “credible political process that can resolve the question of Syria’s future. Ultimately, this process, in our view, will lead to a resolution of Assad’s status.”

    “The Syrian people should determine their country’s political future through a political process,” the official added.

    Given the post war mess left in Iraq and Libya, Trump's policy goals have the benefit of keeping America's distance from what promises to be a less than peaceful, chaotic post war atmosphere in Syria.

    But the policy also carries a geopolitical cost; it empowers and gives influence to Russia in the Middle East after decades of US policies that sought to prevent that eventuality.

    What Putin will do with this influence isn't much of a mystery. As the rest of the Middle East backs "the strong horse" in the region, Russia will seek to establish a military presence where they've never had one before. Putin will have new clients for Russian arms, as well as states willing to back his foreign policy.

    The US no longer needs Middle Eastern oil to survive. We have become net exporters of fossil fuels and possess more oil reserves in our shale and beneath oceans off our coast than Saudi Arabia. Europe may have to take a more active role in the region due to their dependence on Russian natural gas and Middle Eastern oil.

    The US retreat from Syria and the Middle East was inevitable once our need for the oil disappeared. And Europe, once dependent on the US Navy to keep the oil shipping lanes open, will eventually have to fend for themselves.

  10. NORTH KOREAN MISSILES REACHING USA

    Less than six months into Donald Trump’s presidency America has awakened to the nightmare of a North Korea armed with intercontinental ballistic missiles that the Trump administration says are capable of reaching Alaska.

    U.S., South Korean, and Japanese officials say the North Korean Hwasong-14 ICBM flew approximately 580 miles in 40 minutes and achieved an altitude of 1,500 miles, besting previously reported North Korean test results. North Korea’s successful but unexpected test is a sobering reminder of how urgently the United States needs to ramp up its antiballistic missile program after years of reckless military downsizing by the Obama administration.

    The North Korean launch was “the big story we have all been waiting for,” Professor Bruce Bechtol of Angelo State University in Texas told Fox News on Tuesday. “All of the paradigms have changed. It is now time to see what action the USA will take."

    The missile was apparently launched from a mobile launcher, which "nearly destroys our warning time and also means that the North Koreans have a real shot at launching this system at us without us being able to destroy it on the ground."

    North Korea also carried out a successful ballistic missile test on May 14, and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency conducted its first successful interception of an ICBM on May 30. A long-range ground-based interceptor missile launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California hit and destroyed the ICBM launched from the U.S. Army’s Reagan Test Site on Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands.

    This idea of missile defense, oft-compared to trying to shoot a bullet with another bullet, grew out of President Reagan’s Strategic Defensive Initiative (SDI), derided by left-wingers at the time and for years after as “Star Wars.” Unsurprisingly, Barack Obama used to scoff at the idea that a missile could take out another missile.

    Meanwhile, Monday evening after news of the successful Hwasong-14 ICBM test broke, President Trump took to Twitter.

    North Korea has just launched another missile. Does this guy have anything better to do with his life? Hard to believe that South Korea and Japan will put up with this much longer. Perhaps China will put a heavy move on North Korea and end this nonsense once and for all!

    Apparently, "this guy" refers to dictator Kim Jong-un. Communist China has been propping up Kim’s dictatorship for years. The Trump administration wants China to push its North Korean ally harder to scrap its nuclear weapons program.

    During Independence Day remarks at a picnic for military families on the South Lawn of the White House Trump did not refer to North Korea’s activities but said, "we do have challenges, but we will handle those challenges. Believe me.".....

    U.S.-backed Syrian forces have breached the wall surrounding Raqqa’s heavily fortified Old City, marking a significant advance in the battle to drive Islamic State out of a city it used to run its empire and plan attacks abroad, the American military said Tuesday.

    The Syrian Democratic Forces made the breakthrough on Monday after the U.S.-led coalition battling Islamic State conducted airstrikes on the wall, according to the U.S. Central Command. The Kurdish-led SDF fighters came under heavy fire as they entered, Central Command said.

    The advance is the SDF’s deepest yet into Raqqa. If the city falls, it would be one of the biggest achievements in about four years of war against Islamic State led by the Pentagon and its coalition of Western and Arab allies.....

  15. A 19-year-old woman was in critical condition and 10 people were in serious condition after intoxication-related injuries during the annual Independence Day “floatilla” off Waikiki, a lifeguard spokeswoman said.

    Lifeguards estimate 8,000 to 10,000 people attended the party and hundreds had to be rescued from the water.

    Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokeswoman Shayne Enright said lifeguards were extremely busy and stayed overtime until 7:30 p.m. because of the event. She said the woman was in critical condition due to intoxication. All the 10 others who were in serious condition had alcohol-related injuries, and the victims ranged from age 17-26, Enright said.

    Hundreds of people in various motorized boats and inflatable water toys were in relatively shallow waters about a half-mile offshore as part of the event, the Department of Land and Natural Resources said earlier in the afternoon.

    DLNR assigned 14 Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement officers to the area, using a boat and seven jet skis, DLNR spokesman Dan Dennison said, in a release. Joining them were city lifeguards and two U.S. Coast Guard patrol boats.

    Due to brisk off-shore winds, enforcement officers were asking event-goers to move closer to shore and to moderate alcohol consumption, Dennison said.

    Middle East peace hinges on regime change in Iran

    As the Trump administration continues to overhaul and codify a  comprehensive new Iran strategy, the opposition coalition to the mullahs in Tehran held a massive rally on Saturday in the French capital calling for regime change.

    An enormous crowd of participants joined hundreds of prominent dignitaries from the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. The entire convention voiced exuberant support for the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) and its President Maryam Rajavi as the sole viable alternative for the Iranian regime.


    Rajavi emphasized how her movement welcomed statements made during a recent U.S.-Arab-Islamic summit in Riyadh.
    “The ultimate solutions to the crisis in the region is the overthrow of the Iranian regime by the Iranian people,” she explained. “With [the recent presidential] election, the mullahs had intended to improve the regime’s situation. But they divided and destabilized the regime. Now, they are planning and threatening to oust Rouhani,” she added.

    The NCRI President then emphasized on how her people continue to suffer from the mullahs’ regime, highlighting their main demand for an end to the mullahs’ rule. “Regime change is possible and within reach,” Rajavi said. “The Iranian society is simmering.”

    The Iranian opposition leader’s call for the international to once and for all designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist entity received echoes by former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and even elevated by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.....

    1. Public figures also invariably seem to become targets for gossip and speculation. In Justin's case, it has been rumours that he's gay. Anyone who has ever had a chance to observe him chatting up women in the bars along St-Laurent Boulevard probably already knows the answer, but the whispers seem to have irked Trudeau enough that he makes a point of bringing up his sexuality five minutes into our interview. "As a straight, white male..." he says, pausing and adopting a look of mock horror. "Oops, I guess I just blew it," he jokes.

      In the end, the minor missteps and the nasty tattle have done little to remove the lustre left by his eulogy, or diminish Trudeau's considerable appeal. And it's hard to deny that he possesses natural gifts that recommend him for some sort of career in the public eye.

      At McGill, he was on the debating team and it shows. He can hold forth fluidly on almost any subject, and loves to probe the other person's arguments for weaknesses, searching for the kill, even in casual conversation.

      Like his father, he received a classical education at Montreal's Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf. He has a degree from McGill in English literature, a B.A. in education from the University of British Columbia, and is now studying engineering so he can "explore the scientific side" of his mind.

      He has a passionate opinion about practically everything - the media, free trade, the Alouettes, the environment. "I get so annoyed at the complacency of Canadians, the idea that we're so virtuous," he declares at one point in the bar.

      "Look at the facts - we're the largest per capita producers of garbage in the world!" As the conversation progresses, I have to keep moving my glass further and further away from him, for fear that his windmilling arms will punctuate his next point by dumping a beer in my lap.

    Fake Indian vs. Real Indian; Liz Warren challenged by Shiva Ayyadurai

    There probably isn't a Senate race with more potential for fun than an upcoming challenge to Sen. Elizabeth Warren, the D-Mass. dynamo most famous for pretending to be an American Indian to take advantage of Harvard University's affirmative action privileges. President Trump calls her 'Pocahontas.'

    The Massachusetts leftist is now up against a real Indian, tech genius V.A. Shiva Ayyadurai, who's a brainy, unconventionally thinking, ethnic Tamil American who emigrated with his family to the U.S. from Bombay at age six around 1969 or 1970.

    (Sure, it's a different kind of Indian, but dark-skinned Tamil Indian-Americans are usually lumped in with whites on affirmative action forms. Snowy white Granny Warren, on the other hand, is an oppressed minority based on the color of her skin, see?)

    Don't think Shiva Ayyadurai hasn't been having fun with the irony.

    Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren refused to take a DNA test mailed to her by Indian-American entrepreneur V.A. Shiva Ayyadurai, who’s running against her for her U.S. Senate seat.


    “I’m deeply saddened @SenWarren refused my thoughtful (gift-wrapped) Birthday Gift: the 23&me DNA Test Kit,” Ayyadurai tweeted Sunday. “Most unfortunate! #FakeIndian.”

    Besides the sheer bureaucratic weirdness of Ayyadurai being a white and Warren being an Indian, they couldn't be more opposite in additional ways.

    Warren bit and clawed her way to the top through rent-seeking, speculation (as when she flipped houses back in Oklahoma), cronyism (she took $350,000 to teach one class), and punching her ticket as she winged her way through academia, and racial grievance mongering. While claiming the system is rigged and she stands up for the little guy, she's participated with gusto as an insider pig at the trough, shutting out others. She's moved in lockstep to the Democrats a leading standard bearer.

    Ayyadurai made his name through inventions and engineering, with a wide-ranging mind that explores biotech, computer science, scientific visualization and many more areas. In other words, he produced things of value rather than seek rents, and made the world a better place than he found it. He also seems to be new to politics, having disliked Republicans and Democrats equally ever since he could vote, holding a wide variety of mixed opinions, but finally finding a political leader who spoke to him in President Trump. He says his candidacy is about solving problems, not ideology. Yes, his work has had controversy, but it's hard not to sympathize with him.

    Now he's taking on the fake Indian herself, Liz Warren, apparently seeing a weakness that perhaps other political observers have missed. Warren herself got her Senate perch by shredding the upstart Scott Brown, signaling the reestablishment of the status quo in the state in 2012. Yet if Brown got elected, there may still be some of that rebellious spirit in the state. Brown, after all, lost his seat after voting as a conventional Democrat most of the time. The voters may still be looking for that rebel spirit.

    Warren, at a minimum, must realize she better sleep with one eye open. A real Indian is gaining on a fake one, and the public and press are watching.

    A new study has upended long-held assumptions that religious people are more closed-minded and intolerant than atheists.

    The study, conducted by Dr. Filip Uzarevic, a researcher at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium, revealed that while atheists might consider themselves open-minded than religious folk, they are actually less tolerant of differing opinions.

    “The main message of the study is that closed-mindedness is not necessarily found only among the religious,” Uzarevic told PsyPost.

    Uzarevic’s analysis determined that religious believers “seem to better perceive and integrate diverging perspectives.” The study revealed, though, that the level of closed-mindedness depends on the issue at hand.....

    Also inspiring Americans during our national birthday were various public readings—including this one at the Old State House in Boston—of the July 4, 1776 unanimous declaration of the thirteen united States of America:

    When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
    We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed...
    In a spirit of unity, your humble correspondent lauds the New York Times for its 2013 publication of an outstanding feature called, “The Cost of Revolution” by Steve Brodner. As we are constantly reminded, the fifty-six signers of the Declaration of Independence were all male and generally wealthy and a number of them owned slaves. But Mr. Brodner also acknowledges that some of them made “significant personal sacrifices for the cause of independence.” For example, Mr. Brodner explains that Richard Stockton didn’t have the chance to enjoy life in the free nation that he helped to create:

    Late in 1776, Stockton hastened home from an inspection of the Continental Army in New York, after learning of the British invasion of New Jersey. He was captured and imprisoned under harsh conditions. Released in 1777, in poor health, he found Morven, his home in Princeton, pillaged and partly burned. He died in 1781, months before the British surrender.
    Even for those signers who survived the war, the cost was often high indeed. Mr. Brodner writes of South Carolina’s Thomas Heyward:

    Heyward was wounded in 1779 while helping to repel a British attack on Port Royal Island, near his home, and was captured in 1780 during the siege of Charleston. The next year, the British pillaged his home. While he was imprisoned at St. Augustine, Fla., his wife died. At the war’s end, he was nearly killed after falling overboard while traveling by ship with other prisoners.
    Of course the sacrifices did not end there. In the 241 years since, brave men and women have purchased our freedom with their suffering. Virginia’s Free Lance-Star newspaper describes how one of them was remembered on Tuesday:

    In downtown Fredericksburg, a 5-mile Heritage Run took on an especially patriotic and emotional tone, as a dozen or so runners wearing heavy packs made their loop around the course a tribute to an Air Force vet who died in late June.
    Brian Ugalde, an outreach coordinator for Operation Enduring Warrior who lives in Fredericksburg, helped organize the “ruck” run to honor the lost vet, Matthew Sheeron of Pennsylvania, who had coped with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
    Ugalde said he had worked with Sheeron in different OEW programs, and was saddened to learn that the veteran wounded in combat took his own life just over a week ago.
    “I put out the call to different people in the organization, and we had people show up here today from all over to honor Matthew,” he said.

    the modern slave trade flourished in the early middle ages, as early as 869, especially between Muslim traders and western African kingdoms.

    For moralists, the most important aspect of that trade should be that Muslims were selling goods to the African kingdoms and the African kingdoms were paying with their own people.

    In most instances, no violence was necessary to obtain those slaves. Contrary to legends and novels and Hollywood movies, the white traders did not need to savagely kill entire tribes in order to exact their tribute in slaves. All they needed to do is bring goods that appealed to the kings of those tribes. The kings would gladly sell their own subjects.

    (Of course, this neither condones the white traders who bought the slaves nor deny that many white traders still committed atrocities to maximize their business).

    Cooling in the Southern Hemisphere led to an average global temperature drop of about two tenths of a degree Celsius in June, according to Dr. John Christy, director of the Earth System Science Center (ESSC) at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). The global average of 0.21 C warmer than seasonal norms was the coolest value since July 2015 and the start of the 2015-16 El Niño Pacific Ocean warming event.

    Compared to seasonal norms, the coldest place on Earth in June was in the eastern Antarctic near Dome C. Temperatures there averaged 4.43 C (about 7.97 degrees Fahrenheit) colder than seasonal norms.

    Vatican police have broken up a gay orgy at the home of the secretary to one of Pope Francis’s key advisers, it has been claimed.

    The flat belonged to the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, or Holy Office, which is in charge of tackling sexual abuse amongst the clergy.


    Reports in Italy claim the occupant of the apartment is the secretary to Cardinal Francesco Coccopalmerio - a key aide to the 80-year-old Pope.

    Coccopalmerio heads the Pontifical Council for Legislative texts and was said to have once recommended his secretary for a promotion to bishop.

    The claims about the police raid last month were made in the Italian newspaper Il Fatto Quotidiano.

    The flat involved is a short distance from the Vatican itself.

    According to the paper, neighbours became suspicious before complaining about irregular behaviour of those coming and going at the flat.

    When police showed up, they reportedly found drugs and a group of men engaged in sexual activity.

    It is the latest scandal to hit the Vatican and comes after its finance chief Cardinal George Pell was charged with historical sexual offences.

    The worst aspect of this, aside from all the senseless destruction, is that the “offender” has been arrested. This only feeds the impression that this appalling violence is justified. Neither India nor any other non-Muslim state should be enforcing Sharia blasphemy laws. Instead, authorities should be cracking down hard on these mobs, and making it clear that the offense here was not insulting Muhammad, but rioting and wreaking havoc and attacking police over the perceived insult. The way they’re behaving, Indian authorities, like authorities in the West who condemned the Muhammad cartoons instead of the rioting and killing Muslims did because of them, are just fueling this barbarism.

    Communal tensions have flared-up once again in the Basirhat district in Bengal after a supposedly disrespectful Facebook post concerning the Prophet Mohammad began circulating online.

    What began as a protest soon escalated into a violent roving mob ransacking houses of the majority Hindu community in the district.

    It is believed that dozens of businesses, houses, and at least six police vehicles, were torched by a mob in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district.

    The incident began after a class 11 student posted a ‘blasphemous’ message on Facebook.

    The student in question, according to Indian news sources – a Hindu, was arrested on Sunday night and prohibitory orders were enforced.

    However, the vandalism continued throughout Monday and Tuesday as the administration did not inform people about the arrest, claimed Quazi Abdur Rahim, the MLA of Baduria, where the incident happened.

    Locals are claiming that the police did nothing to help and in response the Union Home ministry has now sent in nearly 400 paramilitary personnel to secure the area.

    When TMC MP Idris Ali reached the spot, his car was attacked. Speaking to Mail Today, Ali said, ‘I was there to pacify things, along with a Maharaj.

    ‘But he used ”unparliamentarily language” that made things worse. They threw stones at my car. However, situation is under control now.’

    Local sources on the contrary said the situation is still far from normal and many Hindus have fled from the affected areas.

    The Rapid Action Force has been deployed as well. Tapan Ghosh, the firebrand leader of Hindu Samhati said, ‘The accused who is a minor is already apprehended. But it was used as an opportunity to attack on Hindus.’…

    I imagine the Poles couldn't care less about that but MSNBC can't get it out of their heads.

    NATO, natural gas, ISIS, Russia meddling in our election and other matters where also addressed.

    The Donald took the opportunity to hammer O'bozo for not doing anything about Russian election meddling.
