COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

They are not “Immigrants”. They are “Illegal Immigrants”

‘Unwavering strength': Alabama immigrants, advocates vow to fight Trump policies

Carlos Ramos, an undocumented Mexican immigrant who illegally crossed the border into the United States in 2000 and now lives in Alexander City, said that though he is concerned about a Donald Trump presidency, he plans to fight back against any new anti-immigration policies.

"I feel like everybody; I feel scared, I feel sad. I can't believe it. But this happened in our state, in Alabama, and so many people left the state and got paranoid and some other people, we stood up and fought,” the 43-year-old said, referring to H.B. 56, a sweeping 2011 anti-immigration state law that caused some immigrants to leave Alabama.

At the time, the state was on the cutting edge of a GOP-led experiment in instituting harsh laws to encourage "self deportation" that many see echoed in president-elect Donald Trump's immigration proposals. Ramos said the Latino and immigrant communities in Alabama are stronger as a result of having made it through the crackdown.

"This is going to be the whole country," said Ramos, "but I feel some good things will happen because we need more people and this a good time to get out and do something. We have to be prepared to fight, not to leave."
'Unwavering strength'
It does worry us, but at the same time we have gone through very dark and tough times
Immigrants and their advocates across the United States were stunned by the election of Donald Trump as America’s 45th president Tuesday, a development that many people believe poses an existential threat to the nation's ranks of undocumented immigrants.

But in Alabama, representatives of pro-immigrant groups say that they and even some of the undocumented immigrants they work with are not as concerned as some of their counterparts in other states.

That confidence and lower level of panic is rooted in the fact that Alabama’s immigrant community has already lived through H.B. 56, which was widely described as the country's harshest immigration law at the time.

An expansive piece of legislation, it required local police to question people they believed might be undocumented immigrants, made it illegal to rent a home to an unauthorized immigrant and even asked schools to inquire about the immigration status of students.

Though the time under H.B. 56 was one of fear and uncertainty for many Alabama immigrants that compelled thousands to move out of the state, those who remained say they were emboldened by the experience.

Yazmin Contreras, a community organizer at Adelante Alabama Worker Center, a nonprofit immigrant rights organization headquartered in Hoover, said there is real concern about what immigration policies Trump – who has proposed mass deportations and building a massive wall on the Mexican border – may push.
"There are some people that are obviously worried about what immigration will look like under a Trump presidency," Contreras, who is a daughter of Mexican immigrants, said Wednesday. “I think that the unknown is the part people are most worried about because no one really knows what a Trump presidency will look like and what he will do in office."

The Birmingham-based Alabama Coalition for Immigrant Justice (ACIJ) seconded those concerns in a Wednesday statement, but like Adelante, its members believe that Alabama’s immigrant community is uniquely suited to respond to any harsh immigration laws under Trump.

"With the unexpected news of a soon-to-be Trump presidency, most in our community became worried for their futures, panicked even," the ACIJ statement said. “But with only a few hours to digest this harsh reality, what has emerged from our community is unwavering strength and resilience."

‘Dark and tough times'

Contreras said that the H.B. 56 battles taught her and many other Alabama advocates and immigrants that mass deportation and other anti-immigration measures will never actually be implemented in the U.S., and that that gives the state’s pro-immigrant movement strength and resolve.

“It does worry us, but at the same time we have gone through very dark and tough times, and I think if anything the nation will see what we experienced at the local level here," she said.

"H.B. 56 was created to scare people off and get rid of the undocumented immigrants in this state, and I think people quickly realized we are part of this state and this economy and that we helped build this place. So I don't think that as a nation that is going to happen. He's not going to be able to deport 11 million people, and as far as the wall – that would cost how many millions?"
So immigrants and their advocates like Contreras and Ramos and ACIJ Executive Director Sarai Portillo say they will stand and fight as they did back in 2011.
"This is the beginning of a new era," Portillo said. "This is the continuation of the struggle for respect for rebel dignity, for respect and appreciation for human rights as citizens or undocumented migrants, and for respect for the struggles of our predecessors in this country. We will go ahead, with no room for doubt."

It's understandable that the Trumpettes would still be basking in the Trump victory. For me, the initial cathartic rush of having Clinton booted is starting to fade and is being replaced by the realization that we'll actually have Trump as president.

While I wish Trump well and hope he has a successful presidency, I am not overly optimistic. What should give a clue as to the direction the first hundred days will take will be his nominees for cabinet and agency positions. While none have been named; the rumors out there are troubling, well, at least to me. Though I'm sure the Bobbsey Twins will love them and their ilk. Maybe even Deuce who to my untrained eye seems to have undergone a transformation during this election especially given what Trump has promised to do.

It's evident that the GOP establishment and pundits are pushing hard for the same old people who have run the party for decades, all conventional, all business as usual. This is probably not completely bad but in general it's troubling. For instance, where Trump to nominate some one like Reise Priebus for a position, maybe even Chief of Staff, it might not be a bad thing. As chairman of the RNC, he proved his ability at organization and herding cats and while he continued to support the candidate throughout the campaign he was also honest in his opinion of some of Trump's comments. He seems like an honest broker to me. However, some of the rumors range from the bizaare, Sarah Palin for Secretary of the Interior [to which the bears and the beavers said, 'Well boys, we've had a good run] to the troubling, Mike Rogers for CIA head and Jamie Dimon for Treasury Secretary or Rudy Juliani for Attorney General.

The latter choices, if selected, would indicate that the Trump presidency will pretty much be a continuation of the last two; except with a harsher tone and more erosion of personal liberties.

It appears Trump's chief qualification for those working for him is loyalty. They will have to reflect and implement his vision or they will be out. This is troubling since it means his staff will be populated with yes men and there will be little consideration of alternatives or repercussions. He will be insulated. This is bad in a business man and worse in a president.

His nominees should start filtering out soon. We shall see.

Thanks to Trump, America Dodged the Bullet
    By J.R. Dunn

It may well be true that Donald Trump has made his greatest contribution to the nation before even taking office:  the political destruction of Hillary Clinton and her infinitely corrupt machine.
It’s difficult to grasp how much damage Clinton and her cronies would have inflicted on this country had she been elected. Hyperbole of this type has become a commonplace in political rhetoric in recent years – we hear every day that Obama “destroyed the country,” when in fact Tuesday’s results demonstrated exactly the opposite. But Hillary Clinton is something else – a kind of human focus of corruption and vileness not often encountered outside of fiction.  Four years of Clinton in office would have left the United States in a condition of degradation unseen since the collapse of the Italian republics of the Renaissance.

AT readers don’t need any recital of Clinton’s crimes, nor do we have the space for them. A complete recitation from Rose Law Firm to Whitewater to Benghazi would require the wordage of many articles of this length. We need but mention the two that happen to bookend her career: that she helped free the rapist of a child and then laughed about it, and that she stole relief funds from the very wretched of the earth – the poor of Haiti.

It is not going too far to state that there is scarcely a single genuine act of magnanimity, of kindness, or of simple decency in Hillary Clinton’s record. It is exclusively a parade of crimes and cover-ups, any one of which would have totaled the career of another politician. It’s difficult to recall even a successful attempt to fake a human episode, as is commonly found among dictators of the Kim or Castro variety. Such an effort would have totally unconvincing to an audience of any sophistication whatsoever. Hillary Clinton is simply the epitome of the rabid self – a whirlpool of selfishness, greed, and malignance.

Similarly, it’s next to impossible to come up with any achievements. The “reset”? Benghazi? Syria? Clinton’s entire career is one vast Gobi composed of nullity, not even arising to the level of mediocrity.

It’s even evident in her looks, which are enough to arouse anxiety in any healthy viewer. The near-demented glare, the coldness, the frown lines etched by decades of sneers – Clinton was everyone’s nightmare stepmother, vicious teacher, manipulative coworker or boss. I recall a line from a half-forgotten short story: “a mask of atrocity.” That’ll do.

This is further backed up by accounts from coworkers and underlings, an unending chorus of insults, tantrums, thrown crockery, and petty humiliations. Her sole close human relationship, following a marriage that failed in the most spectacular manner conceivable, is a grotesque “friendship” with another strange figure, Huma Abedin, who might possibly have established and cultivated it under orders.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In light of all this, how did her rise ever come about? With a record matching that of any criminal and a visage bespeaking anger, how did she get within a few million sane votes to taking control of the leading nation on earth? Throughout her career, men of distinguished reputation and otherwise have committed crimes, lied, and degraded themselves to smooth her path. Over the past few months we’ve seen members of the self-styled conservative elite whine that they’d prefer to vote for her for reasons not worth dwelling on. (We need a concise list of these people so that we know whose opinion to set aside in the future.)

Fear is no doubt part of the answer. There is the still not well-understood connection between the Southern mob and the Clinton machine. There’s the machine’s own very effective research and blackmail mechanism, which has dug up secrets of the great and near-great and held them over their heads (Recall Daniel Moynihan, by no means an ignoble figure, standing with his head down and speaking scarcely above a mumble as he “endorsed” Hillary for his Senate seat.)

Ideology is another answer. Somehow, Clinton became the standard-bearer for the left, both the slogan repeaters produced by the universities and their more rabid feminist sisters. Beyond that, there is the sad tribe of professional women promoted due to affirmative action to positions beyond their capabilities and then shunted off to obscure offices and slots where they can do no harm. Clinton has been the spokesman for this group, which is larger than many imagine, for quite some time.

But there’s more to it than that. Looking at history we find numerous instances of individuals who defy every standard and violate every norm as they claw their way to the top, with no one making any meaningful effort to stop them. Hitler is an obvious example, but there are many others. It seems to be a historical pattern. I suspect that it has deep sociobiological roots, that it is a product of the cynicism and hypocrisy present in any society. One particular individual becomes the focus for feelings of defiance, and is allowed actions that others would like to carry out but don’t dare. We see similar impulses in those who idolize criminals such as Dillinger or Willie Sutton, and the women who become pen pals and occasionally the romantic partners of the likes of Charles Manson.

Clinton’s career might well repay close study. We need methods of identifying these types and curtailing them. We also need to closely examine ourselves, our society, and our way of life to identify the weaknesses that allowed this creature to shamble across the political landscape unchallenged for so long.

We have time for that now. Clinton is finished. She is never going to become the American Messalina. She is too sickly to wait out another term. Beyond that, any bandit leader is always marked. When strong, things click along as if by perpetual motion. But if she shows any sign of weakness, her cronies will begin to desert her, those she trampled on and harmed will seek payback, and the authorities will at last stir themselves to look into things. The current investigations will continue and expand. Others will be opened. Clinton can look forward to an old age spent in courthouses and committee rooms. She will end up as one of those Mafia dons slumped in a wheelchair while the lawyers attempt to generate sympathy. And that’s fine. She has earned the most Hellenic of punishments.

We have Donald Trump to thank for this. I still have doubts about Trump. He lacks experience and temperament. His reach is likely to exceed his grasp. His brashness will entangle him with the permanent bureaucracy. He will not preside over an American Renaissance.

But if he accomplishes only two things – reversing the immigration trend and saving the Supreme Court – that will be plenty. Because he has already fulfilled his great historical achievement – saving the United States from falling into the hands of a political banshee.

      That’s enough for any man.

The news just had film of one on from the land of the fruits and nuts, California or Portland, someplace out west. The damn thing turned into a riot. Un-f'ing believable. Hard to figure why they are doing it. Reid and the other talking heads are demaning that he call meetings with 'Black Lives Matters' and other victims groups and apologize for his bad manners during the campaign. (I think the only reason Reid wants him to do it is because it would fill up Trumps first 100 days in office.)

But apologizing wouldn't make a difference. These people wouldn't believe him anyway. And the signs they were carrying seem to reject him as president under any circumstance.

The irony is that for the six months the liberal press has been pushing the story that the Trump supporters would be the ones rioting. Does anyone remember any conservative groups in 2008 or 2012 rioting when Obama won? I don't.

....One senator has even proposed loosening Mexico’s strict firearms laws to allow people to keep weapons in their cars and businesses.

An estimated 98% of crimes in Mexico go unpunished, while the most recent survey by the state statistics service INGEI found 93% of crimes are not even reported.

Some observers expect the “avenger” trend to continue, especially as stories of ordinary citizens meting out crude justice gain attention on social media.

“People have less patience and expect less from the government,” said Gerardo Priego Tapía, a former politician now directing an anti-kidnap group in Tabasco state. “This is prompting people to defend themselves and fight back.”....

  25. The Election Came Down to 107,330 Votes in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan

A closer look at the three states that decided the winner in 2016.

    3:13 PM, Nov 10, 2016 | By John McCormack

Donald Trump owes his victory in the Electoral College to three states he won by the smallest number of votes: Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan. So it's fair to say that the 2016 presidential election was decided by about 100,000 votes out of than 120 million ballots cast. According to the latest tallies, Trump won Pennsylvania by 1.1 percentage points (68,236 votes), Wisconsin by 0.9 points (27,257 votes), Michigan by 0.2 points (11,837 votes). If Clinton had won all three states, she would have won the Electoral College 278 to 260. She fell short in all three, of course, and that's why we are now getting accustomed to the reality of President-elect Donald J. Trump.

Trump's victory in these three states was a big shift from 2012, when Obama won Michigan by 9.5 points, Wisconsin by 6.7 points, and Pennsylvania by 5.2 points. Although the national vote swung only about 3 points toward GOP in 2016 (leaving Hillary Clinton as the narrow winner of the popular vote), these three states swung by 6 to 10 points toward the Republican presidential nominee.

So what accounts for the swing? A close look at the exit polls reveals....

Chris Christie put old man Charles Kushner in jail for a year -

In the summer of 2004 Kushner was fined $508,900 by the Federal Election Commission for mishandling of campaign contributions.[9] In 2005, following an investigation by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of New Jersey,[10] Kushner was convicted of making illegal campaign contributions, tax evasion and witness tampering.[11] The U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey, Chris Christie, negotiated a plea agreement and Kushner was sentenced to two years in prison and released after one year. [12][13][14][15] As a result of his convictions, Kushner was suspended and disbarred from the practice of law in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.[7][16][17][18]

I don't think Chris is going to be Chief of Staff.

Besides, he's got 'BridgeGate' to think about:

Even Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has weighed in on the scandal, insisting during the primaries that Christie (who has since endorsed Trump) "totally knew about" the scheme and that "there's less than one percent chance" the governor was unaware.

      Indict Hillary Clinton

      By Daniel John Sobieski

While Hillary Clinton’s “basket of deplorables” was marching to the polls pitchforks and torches in hand to deny her access to the presidency and a new revenue source for the Clinton Foundation, Scooter Libby got his law license back and was reinstated to the bar by the D.C. Court of Appeals.

Libby was Vice President Dick Cheney’s chief of staff when he was charged with obstruction of an investigation into the “outing” of Valerie Plame as a CIA operative. Plame was in fact a desk jockey at CIA Headquarters in Langley, Virginia, not a secret agent in harm’s way. As Investor’s Business Daily noted:

Remember the alleged outing of the already known CIA officer and desk jockey Valerie Plame? We were told then that the Vanity Fair cover girl's 15 minutes of fame jeopardized our national security even if everybody already knew who she was.

"Scooter" Libby, Vice President Dick Cheney's former chief of staff, went to jail because his memory of events and who said what to whom regarding Plame differed from the recollections of others, particularly news reporters.

Libby in fact did not out Plame who was not a covert operative. Hillary Clinton, whose faulty memory caused her to say to the FBI she couldn’t recall some 39 times, did in fact endanger the lives of foreign operatives in her “carelessness”, as FBI Director James Comey put it, regarding classified emails.

Scooter Libby’s “crimes” included making “false” statements to the FBI in the case of the alleged “outing” of well-known CIA desk jockey Valerie Plame. If anyone has made false statements to the FBI, it is one Hillary Rodham Clinton. Saying you don’t recall more than three dozen times doesn’t past the Pinocchio test.

      Delete
    4. Plame was as noted a well-known desk jockey at CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia. Hillary’s lies and reckless carelessness included the transmission of emails containing the names of actual CIA operatives in the field involved in clandestine operations. As the New York Post reported:

Hillary Clinton’s e-mails included the names of CIA officers serving overseas and foreigners who are on the spy agency’s payroll -- potentially endangering their lives, it was reported Monday.

“It’s a death sentence,” a senior intelligence-community official told the Observer. “If we’re lucky, only [foreign] agents, not our officers, will get killed because of this.”

The paper said the intelligence community is in panic mode trying to determine which agents may have been compromised.

CIA officials assume foreign agencies intercepted unencrypted e-mails stored on Clinton’s. home server while she was secretary of state.

So why was Libby convicted and Hillary Clinton not even indicted? In an interesting historical footnote, Comey, who falsely claimed no serious prosecutor would take the case of Hillary Clinton, was among those who found sufficient evidence to prosecute and convict Libby. Comey, it appears, has even more explaining to do. As the Daily Caller reports:

Washington D.C.-based former U.S. Attorney Joe DiGenova believes the Libby decision is a “terrible blow” to FBI Director James Comey, who announced Sunday that the agency had no new conclusions on Hillary Clinton and her private server from the 650,000 new emails found on Anthony Weiner’s laptop.

“Scooter Libby was restored to the practice of law by the DC court of appeals because they believed that Scooter Libby presented evidence that his original trial had been corrupted by false testimony. And that false testimony was coerced by Jim Comey’s friend Patrick Fitzgerald and Comey was part of the team to destroy the vice president of the United States and it didn’t happen,” DiGenova said.

He added,” It’s such a smack in the face to Jim Comey. Comey and Fitzgerald tried to frame Scooter Libby, and they did….”

The evidence against Hillary is damning, and the line of prosecutors willing to take the case would encircle the FBI building in Washington, D.C. Judge Michael Mikasey, former attorney general under President George W. Bush, listed the charges that Hillary Clinton could face on Fax Radio’s “Kilmeade and Friends:”

We are looking at a range of things, everything from the misdemeanor that was charged against General Petraeus, which is putting classified information in an unprotected, classified setting, that’s a misdemeanor. Then there is destroying government records. Then there is taking information related to the national defense and treating it with gross negligence such as it becomes disclosed. And finally, there is obstruction of justice.”

There is the destruction of evidence under Congressional subpoena. As even Comey admitted, Hillary lied about sending and receiving classified material; about having only one device, and about turning over all her emails. If intent is needed, what is accidental about smashing devices with hammers or using Bleach Bit to render emails unrecoverable? If you need a motive for having a private server, which speaks to intent, the obvious purpose is to cover up the “pay to play” trail that leads from the State Department to the Clinton Foundation.

      Delete
    5. As Investor’s Business Daily editorialized, donations to the Clinton Foundation even played a factor in the refusal of Hillary Clinton’s State Department to designate Nigeria’s Boko Haram as a terrorist organization for two years:

Hillary's emails may be only the tip of an iceberg that could include Clinton Foundation donations to shield Boko Haram from being designated a terrorist group and her brother's involvement in a Haitian gold mine….

In interviews with the Post, both Rodham and the chief executive of Delaware-based VCS Mining said they were introduced at a meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative, which seems more and more to be an unseemly mix of charitable work with the political and business interests of Clinton Foundation donors.

And then there's Hillary's strange dealings regarding the Nigerian terrorist group Boko Haram, which just recently pledged its allegiance to the ever-expanding Islamic State -- dubbed the "JV team" by President Obama, who has yet to make good on his pledge to degrade and destroy them.

Last May, we wondered why for two years on Hillary Clinton's watch the State Department refused to designate a Nigerian Islamist group as a terrorist organization. This group has murdered thousands as it wages a real war on women. As Josh Rogin at the Daily Beast reports, the Clinton State Department "refused to place Boko Haram on the list of foreign terrorist organizations in 2011" after the group bombed the United Nations headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria…

How many of the more than 30,000 "personal" emails that Hillary deleted from her private account relate to these matters? Is that why she needed a private email server? We need to see that server. It might provide, er, a veritable gold mine of information.

This is but one example. The public corruption of Hilary and Bill Clinton was also on display in Colombia, Haiti, and other places. Hillary Clinton has endangered the lives of our foreign operatives, placed our national security at risk, lied to Congress, the FBI, and the American people, and used her public office to enrich herself and her family without benefit if a business or private sector job.

Various FBI offices are said to still be investigating the Clinton Foundation and we can only hope so. Comey doesn’t think there’s any fire under all that smoke but perhaps a Trump attorney general might think differently. We have hope in Trump’s own remarks in a presidential debate as reported by the New York Times:

About 20 minutes into the debate, Donald Trump delivered a menacing threat to Hillary Clinton. “If I win,” he warned, “I’m going to instruct my attorney general to get a special prosecutor to look into your situation, because there’s never been so many lies, so much deception.” …

“It’s just awfully good that someone with the temperament of Donald Trump is not in charge of the law in our country,” Mrs. Clinton observed.

“Because,” Mr. Trump replied “you’d be in jail.”

This is not a Third World country where leaders incarcerate their predecessors and opponents on a whim. But we are a nation of laws and Hillary Clinton has broken many of them. Her only accomplishment in public office has been to so far avoid prosecution. President Trump should keep his promise to incarcerate this fugitive from justice. The voters have denied Hillary Clinton the presidency. A Trump Justice Department should deny Hillary Clinton her freedom.

  30. When Melania Trump Met Michelle Obama, Their Clothes Did Some of the Talking

Hillary Clinton began the messaging when she wore a purple-lapel Ralph Lauren pantsuit for her concession speech on Wednesday morning, uniting red and blue in a single shade as she urged the country to unite. And Michelle Obama continued the subliminal signals when she chose a purple Narciso Rodriguez dress with an orange aftershock sunburst curve for her meeting with Melania Trump.

It was a nice bit of color diplomacy.

But it also wasn’t without implicit references to Mr. Obama’s administration and legacy. After all, it was the second time she wore Mr. Rodriguez this week, the first time being for her final speech for Mrs. Clinton in Philadelphia, delivered in a navy coat by the designer.

Mr. Rodriguez is, as it happens, Cuban-American, the son of immigrants and a classic American success story. He is currently the subject of a retrospective at the Frost Art Museum in Miami, chosen in part, the curator told The New York Times, because “It is very important to incorporate the accomplishments of Latin American artists, architects and designers into the canon of history.”

Mr. Rodriguez was also the designer of the black and red dress that Mrs. Obama wore when her husband gave his victory speech in Chicago in 2008.

Something of a contrast was, not surprisingly, provided by Mrs. Trump. For the visit to Washington on Thursday, she wore a streamlined sleeveless black sheath dress, a matching coat and Christian Louboutin heels. Thus far, as was the case throughout the campaign, no brand has issued the traditional news release about Mrs. Trump wearing its designs, most likely because she buys her clothes herself, rather than working through a stylist or brand. (The shoes were recognizable because of the brand’s signature red soles).

Whether that will change when she is in the White House remains to be seen. In the meantime, the fact she wore black instead of her usual white or pastel shades has got some people riled up. (“Melania Trump wore a funereal black dress to the White House,” Yahoo News cried.)

Ms. Rogers, 34, was motivated in part by what she saw as Mrs. Clinton’s lenient stance on immigration.

“We are drowning right now,” she said. “Our vets are homeless. There’s one out of every five American children starving right now. And Clinton wants to open the floodgates and let everybody else in.”

Ms. Rogers, who said she had “loved Bill Clinton as a president” and found Mr. Obama “all right,” added: “There’s people who’ve been here 12 years who don’t even care to learn the language but want to reap all the benefits of this country: food stamps, free health care, Section 8 housing, welfare checks. People are sick of that, especially in Macomb County.”

Nunes has brought happiness to the sport, particularly in her standing as the first openly gay champion in combat sports and her affection for her partner, fellow UFC fighter Nina Ansaroff.

“She helps me not only in training … we go to the gym, discuss the fight, watch it, she cooks for me, pays my bills … she’s my nutritionist,” Nunes said. “She might fight at [the strawweight limit of] 115 [pounds], but she’s tough … this helps me go to the next level.”
