Honestly folks, here’s the deal, do you really think “Crooked Hillary” has a prayer?

Once a Clinton stronghold, Appalachia now Trump country

By LISA LERER
Associated Press

ASHLAND, Ky. (AP) - When President Bill Clinton rolled into the small Appalachian town of Ashland, Kentucky, in 1996, cheering crowds lined the streets. Local boy-turned-country music star Billy Ray Cyrus performed a special version of his hit, “Achy Breaky Heart" before nearly 20,000 supporters at a riverfront re-election rally.

Back then, this was Clinton country. Today, it looks an awful lot more like Trump town.

Hillary Clinton was met in Ashland on Monday by just a handful of supporters and a lone heckler, who shouted: "Go home, Hillary!" Later on, hundreds of protesters stood in pouring rain, waved Donald Trump signs and chanted “Kill-ary" as Clinton toured a health center in Williamson, West Virginia.

The unwelcome reception marks a striking political shift for the Clintons, who've long staked their electoral fortunes on working class white voters. Bill Clinton won the White House in 1992 by wooing Southern swing voters in places such as Kentucky, West Virginia and Tennessee, and his wife swept all three states in her primary run in 2008 against then-Illinois Sen. Barack Obama.

Eight years later, Trump’s connection with those voters could pose a threat to Clinton in the coal mining communities of Appalachia she visited on Monday, but also in parts of the Rust Belt and upper Midwest hit hard by the decline of domestic manufacturing.

"I am well aware of the politics in West Virginia," she told MSNBC in Charleston, W.Va on Tuesday. “It's gotten increasingly challenging for Democrats to be successful."

As she increasingly focuses her efforts on the general election, Clinton is trying to replicate the electoral strategy that twice boosted Obama into the White House by concentrating on wooing young, minority and female voters.

Trump may afford them new opportunities to expand what’s known as the Obama coalition: Her aides calculate the billionaire's penchant for controversy could put traditionally Republican-leaning states such as Georgia, North Carolina and Arizona into play.

"As an old duck hunter, I know the truth of the saying, 'You gotta hunt where the ducks are at,'" said Paul Begala, who helped engineer Clinton's victory in 1992. “President Obama understood this, as does Secretary Clinton."

But at the same time, Clinton's long history with the region means she and her husband aren't willing to give up on places such as Ashland. Her campaign explained her swing through the coal-mining region as one that highlights her willingness to speak to the entire country - even those people who don't support her bid. Aides say she’s unlikely to win either Kentucky or West Virginia in the primaries later this month or the general election next fall.

Democrats have lost support in Appalachia as the region has shed jobs in industries such as coal mining and as union membership has declined, said Democratic strategist Dave "Mudcat" Saunders. The leftward shift of the Democratic Party during the Obama administration on social issues, including gay marriage and gun control, hasn't helped. “In those areas, it has become culturally unacceptable for a white male to admit he's a Democrat," Saunders said.

On Sunday, Bill Clinton was booed at an event in Logan, West Virginia. Before he arrived, the town's mayor sent an email to West Virginia Sen. Joe Minchin’s office, saying the couple wasn't welcome to use city fire department facilities for their political events.

Clinton's waning popularity in the region was further hurt by a remark she made in a March interview with CNN, when she said she would "put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business." She was responding to a question about how her policies would benefit poor white people in Southern states.

"I can't take it back and I certainly can't get people who for politically reasons or personal reasons, very painful reasons, are upset with me," said Clinton, who called the comment a "misstatement." ‘'I'm going to do whatever I can to try to help."

Outside her event, protesters weren’t buying.

"Hillary Clinton should be in prison," said Dionne Collins, who backed Bill Clinton in 1992. “The only hope is Donald Trump."

Associated Press reporter Catherine Lucey contributed to this report from Des Moines, Iowa.

  2. Ignore the sneering elites - Donald Trump can win

Donald Trump’s feat in dismissing all other Republicans from the US presidential race ought not to come as a surprise. I noted months ago that he was a more serious prospect than most believed – or wanted to believe – and when I wrote from America in March after Super Tuesday it was to say he seemed unstoppable. If the Republican Party wants to destroy itself, it could attempt to impose another candidate: but otherwise, Mr Trump is in the final.

He may not be the next president: but, again, it is a far more possible outcome than many believe – or want to believe. Surveys show his support is far from confined to blue-collar white men. The political class, and the pundits who cosy up to them, cannot understand why he has become the first man since Eisenhower to get to a US general election without having held any elected office.

That is because they have a pitiful understanding of the American people, who no longer conform to the patronising stereotypes of the past – stereotypes rooted in a deference to machine politicians that the contemptuous and often corrupt behaviour of those politicians has destroyed completely. Something similar is true in Britain, which is why so many in Westminster can’t grasp why the Leave campaign prospers in the polls.

    1. {...}Doubtless some Republicans will continue to express horror at Mr Trump, and do all they can to stop him. They can back Hillary Clinton – the likely other option – a dismal machine politician of the sort with whom they feel comfortable, however odious her politics and personality would normally be to them. One of their pet pundits, the highly respected George F Will, has voiced the contempt of the Republican political elite by urging Mr Trump to be defeated in all 50 states of the Union.
      (OUCH!)

Full marks to him for candour. But Mr Will seems not to realise how much he and the Republicans he has endorsed in recent years have made the Trump phenomenon possible. Mr Trump has a chance of the White House because modern Republicans have either governed disastrously – such as George W Bush – or had nothing to offer except platitudes and drivel, as with Mitt Romney in 2012. The political elite who now savage Mr Trump – whether failed politicians such as Mr Romney or commentators such as Mr Will – are the same people who have created him as a political force.

Mr Trump can win in November. Mrs Clinton is hugely unpopular. Many supporters of Bernie Sanders – still in the race, in the hope that many Democratic “superdelegates” will shift their allegiance from Mrs Clinton to him as he is more likely to beat Mr Trump – have made it clear they will abstain rather than vote for her. Paradoxically, some Republicans will do as Mr Will demands, and vote for Mrs Clinton; but Mr Trump will cause millions of Americans who have not hitherto voted in general elections to turn out on polling day, precisely because he offers something not normally available at general elections.

Mrs Clinton will find him hard to tackle, compared with the central casting politicians she has hitherto fought either for the Senate or when she took on Barack Obama for the nomination in 2008. Trump is unpredictable, and won’t play by the Queensberry rules. He will goad Mrs Clinton about her campaign funders, and the favours she has done for Wall Street. He will goad her about her conduct during the inglorious presidency of her much-diminished husband. He will goad her about the attack on Benghazi in which an American ambassador died while she was Secretary of State. He will goad her about using her hacked private email server to store state secrets, for which she still could end up being indicted. He will goad her about her – absurdly – taking a campaign donation in return for attending his last wedding. And he will goad her about things he hasn’t even thought of yet. Tens of millions will love it.

    3. GETTING TO THE GOOD PART

{...}Perhaps instead of protesting the impossibility of Mr Trump winning, we should focus on the consequences if he does. Whether David Cameron should apologise to him for the infantile insults he threw at him, and which show yet again how our Prime Minister too rarely considers the consequences of his words and actions, will depend on his still being prime minister when and if Mr Trump becomes president. That may rest on the referendum. In any case, there will be bigger fish to fry than the effects of Mr Cameron’s stupid and arrogant decision to grandstand about another country’s politics.

If Mr Trump follows through on his promises to start a trade war to protect American workers, there will be a profound shock to the global economy. There will be a very different policy in the Middle East, with Mr Trump promising a full confrontation with his sworn enemy, Islam. That could have profound effects for the defence and security of all countries allied to, or thought to be allied to, America.

Just as dangerous as radical Islam is Russia, an aggressive kleptocracy that has expanded its territory and influence not least thanks to the inertia of America under President Obama and the impotence of the EU. When Presidents Putin and Trump first sit down together – two self-obsessed egomaniacs and narcissists who have much in common – the result will either be a new cold war or the most remarkable alliance in history.

No wonder traditional politicians are so distressed. A peasants’ revolt is under way in America – as, indeed, it is in Britain and in much of Europe – and they are the target of the revolutionaries’ anger. It threatens nothing less than the end of an old order – an order that has failed because of its contempt for the feelings of voters who believed they lived in a democracy.

Perhaps Donald Trump has alienated too many Americans to win. But in the present climate, only a fool would say he won’t.

  3. In the OORAH ASSHOLES department:

A new study published by UNICEF places the United States at 18 out of 41 among the world’s wealthiest countries in terms of the well-being of their impoverished children.

From U.S. News & World Report:

For context, the U.S. ranks No. 1 in total wealth.

The study took a comprehensive approach, comparing the gap between children at the very bottom to those in the middle across a range of criteria – including household income, educational achievement and self-reported health and life satisfaction. The central question was this: How far do countries let those at the very bottom fall?

In the United States, the answer seems to be distressingly far.

On income inequality, the U.S. ranked No. 30, coming in behind countries like Turkey, Estonia and Slovakia. Driving the gap is the fact that one in five American children lives in poverty – a figure among the worst in the world. On education, the U.S. fared better at No. 10, with a relatively small achievement gap between those at the bottom and those at the middle, but plunged to No. 21 on life satisfaction – coming in well behind even recession-plagued countries like Greece, Spain and Portugal.

  7. THIS IS ENTERTAINMENT!

One of the first political moments that brought Berkman and Goldman together was the Homestead Strike. In June 1892, a steel plant in Homestead, Pennsylvania owned by Andrew Carnegie became the focus of national attention when talks between the Carnegie Steel Company and the Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers (AA) broke down. The factory's manager was Henry Clay Frick, a fierce opponent of the union. When a final round of talks failed at the end of June, management closed the plant and locked out the workers, who immediately went on strike. Strikebreakers were brought in and the company hired Pinkerton guards to protect them. On July 6, a fight broke out between three hundred Pinkerton guards and a crowd of armed union workers. During the twelve-hour gunfight, seven guards and nine strikers were killed.[39]

Goldman and Berkman believed that a retaliatory assassination of Carnegie Steel Company manager Henry Clay Frick (pictured) would "strike terror into the soul of his class" and "bring the teachings of Anarchism before the world".[40]
When a majority of the nation's newspapers came out in support of the strikers, Goldman and Berkman resolved to assassinate Frick, an action they expected would inspire the workers to revolt against the capitalist system. Berkman chose to carry out the assassination, and ordered Goldman to stay behind in order to explain his motives after he went to jail. He would be in charge of the deed; she of the word.[41] Berkman tried and failed to make a bomb, then set off for Pittsburgh to buy a gun and a suit of decent clothes. Goldman, meanwhile, decided to help fund the scheme through prostitution. Remembering the character of Sonya in Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel Crime and Punishment (1866), she mused: "She had become a prostitute in order to support her little brothers and sisters...Sensitive Sonya could sell her body; why not I?"[42] Once on the street, she caught the eye of a man who took her into a saloon, bought her a beer, gave her ten dollars, informed her she did not have "the knack", and told her to quit the business. She was "too astounded for speech".[42] She wrote to Helena, claiming illness, and asked her for fifteen dollars.[43]

On July 23, Berkman gained access to Frick's office with a concealed handgun and shot Frick three times, then stabbed him in the leg. A group of workers—far from joining in his attentat—beat Berkman unconscious, and he was carried away by the police.[44] Berkman was convicted of attempted murder[45] and sentenced to 22 years in prison;[46] his absence from her life was very difficult for Goldman.[47] Convinced Goldman was involved in the plot, police raided her apartment and—finding no evidence—pressured her landlord into evicting her. Worse, the attentat had failed to rouse the masses: workers and anarchists alike condemned Berkman's action. Johann Most, their former mentor, lashed out at Berkman and the assassination attempt. Furious at these attacks, Goldman brought a toy horsewhip to a public lecture and demanded, onstage, that Most explain his betrayal. He dismissed her, whereupon she struck him with the whip, broke it on her knee, and hurled the pieces at him.[48][49] She later regretted her assault, confiding to a friend: “At the age of twenty-three, one does not reason."[50]

    Hillary’s lying face

    By Thomas Lifson

Bill Clinton is an accomplished liar, but it was Hillary* who was called a “congenital liar” in William Safire’s enduring label. But she admits she is not a “natural politician” is also not a natural liar, if there is any distinction between the two roles.

An amazing 13 minute compilation of Hillary Clinton’s lies in public offers us the opportunity to examine in detail her “tells” when she lies.

Screen grabs from her very first lie on the video, under sharp questioning by Anderson Cooper on her disingenuous claim to have been consistent on gay marriage, offer a tutorial on how to recognize a self-conscious Hillary lie. In brief, the eyes tell the story.

Step one: The tight smile and a look downward with mostly closed eyes, as she realizes she is going to have to spin:

Step two: half opens her eyes, still looking down, as the lie begins:

Step 3: eyes open further, but not focused; facial expression suggests doubt:

Step 4: looks at questioner, but with eyes closed:

Step 5: looks off into space, as she seems to wonder if the audience is buying it.

This is a video for your friends and family who are not (yet) disgusted by Hillary Clinton. Some have called this a “hold your nose election,” because there are many who find Donald Trump not to their taste. That being the case, Hillary must be held accountable, and this YouTube video, posted by Michael Armstrong, which I found on Twitchy via a link on Instapundit, is a start.

*Thanks to the many people who corrected my faulty memory that it was Bill who was called this by Safire.

  18. Clinton’s Mother’s Day present? FBI close to end of investigation

posted at 9:31 am on May 8, 2016 by Jazz Shaw

At one point in the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private bathroom email server, reporters were able to coax an unnamed “FBI official” into saying that Hillary Clinton was “not the target” of the investigation. It’s a line which all of her defenders, including the White House, have stuck to like glue. But now the end days of this long process appear to be upon us and that line of defense is crumbling quickly. As The Hill reports, this process is developing pretty much in keeping with the standard FBI playbook, with Clinton’s closest allies having been interviewed shortly before the former Secretary of State herself will answer questions. And the last person you talk to is pretty much always “the target.”

“This certainly sends the signal that they are nearing an end to their investigation,” said Steven Levin, a former federal prosecutor and current partner at the law firm Levin & Curlett…

“Typically, the way we structure investigations when I was a federal prosecutor is that we would seek to interview the target last,” he said.

“As you begin to interview people who are extremely close to the target of an investigation — people who are considered confidantes … you typically interview those people towards the final stages of the investigation,” he added. “So that way if they tell you something that is contrary to something you’ve already learned, you can immediately challenge them on that information.”

Another former U.S. Attorney who has handled similar cases, Matthew Whitaker, was quoted as saying that investigators will be looking to see if there are any contradictions between Clinton’s answers and those of her aides and others involved with the installation and maintenance of the server. This won’t be an effort to gather new information because, “they’re only going to ask her questions that they know the answers to already.”

    1. While this is yet another article which seeks to raise the question of whether Clinton “intended to violate the law” through her actions (which we discussed here previously) the authors did manage to speak with an experienced national security lawyer, Bradley Moss, who once again put this line of media defense to rest.

“[T]he extent to which the person intended to remove classified documents is irrelevant,” he said in an email to The Hill. “All that matters for strict legal purposes of culpability is whether the person, by virtue of their official position, came into possession of classified information and affirmatively removed the information to an unauthorized location (i.e., the private server). “

“Whether the person knew or suspected the information was classified is irrelevant.”

The truly curious aspect of the article from The Hill is that they chose to describe the comments from Bradley Moss as an indication that a perceived lack of intent, “might not necessarily get her off the hook from some misdemeanor charges.” I’m not sure which legal codes they’ve been reading, but a violation of 18 USC 793 is most assuredly not a misdemeanor. In fact it’s a felony, and one which is nestled in with other federal criminal codes which deal with spies. (Though a case such as this where there is no clear connection of the target to a foreign government shouldn’t be conflated with espionage.)

All in all, the analysts seem to have pegged this one correctly in terms of the timing at least. There have been many, many witnesses deposed, most recently including Huma Abedin and those who run in her very exclusive circle. Now Secretary Clinton herself will be questioned. At this point we’ve got to be near the end of the line. Then the only remaining question is whether or not James Comey has the intestinal fortitude to pull the trigger and what the Justice Department will do with this hot potato if it lands in their lap less than two months before the Democrats name the target of this felony level national security investigation as their nominee to be the leader of the free world.

  19. I read the most amazing article, today. Some guy had convinced himself that the crookedest, most evil, corrupt administration in World History was going to indict its own best hope for continuing in power.

Amazing what some people can convince themselves to believe, isn't it?

    2. Shall we ask Rufus a serious question ?

O well, just as an experiment, what the hell....

Rufus, should Hillary be indicted in the email 'controversy' ?

Should she and Billygoat be indicted for corruption in the 'Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Foundation' controversy ?

We'll see what the old swamp gator says, folks....

    4. What anyone here thinks about Hillary being indicted, is meaningless, Robert "Draft Dodger" Peterson.

If Mrs Clinton is not indicted, or if a large number of FBI agents do not resign if she is not indicted, she will be the next President of the US.

No matter what you, "Draft Dodger" Peterson, think of her or her supporters.
Whether or not you would indict her, is meaningless. You have neither access to the evidence, nor any first hand knowledge from someone who does.

Your opinion is based upon partisan reporting.

As for skirting issues, you'll be off to the casino, post haste

    5. Perhaps Rufus, you have never had Idaho grown Shrooms.

"Immediate Effects of Mushrooms. Ingesting these types of mushrooms has a strong hallucinogenic effect that begins to affect the user within 20-30 minutes. Early effects of the active ingredients in mushrooms, psilocybin, psilocin, and baeocystin, are broken down into psilocin once .."

  21. On Facebook Friday, Bush posted that he would not be supporting Trump.
'Donald Trump has not demonstrated that temperament or strength of character. He has not displayed a respect for the Constitution. And, he is not a consistent conservative. These are all reasons why I cannot support his candidacy,' Bush wrote.

He added that his fingers were crossed when he signed the pledge, and his word is as good as gole.

Did you send the mother of your child a Mother's Day gift, Sperm Donor ?

  25. Generally, people are pretty stupid. Slick Willy was clear vermin in 1996. But the hordes of suckers thought he was a hero. Fast forward, it takes almost eight years of a Commie, Racist, lying POS to wake the country up. If Trump hadn't jumped in , we would be heading full globalism; no borders , etc. Of course, it may happen even with Trump. He's the only chance to keep Sovereignty.
