The Strange Case of a Nazi Who Became a Hitman for Israeli intelligence after the Second World War

Hitler’s commando Lt-Col Otto Skorzeny 'worked as an assassin for Israeli intelligence' - Telegraph

5:25PM BST 29 Mar 2016 TELEGRAPH

A notorious former SS officer known as “Hitler’s commando” reportedly worked as an assassin for Israeli intelligence.

Lt-Col Otto Skorzeny, once described by British and American intelligence as “the most dangerous man in Europe”, was secretly recruited by Mossad after the Second World War, according to Israel’s Ha’aretz newspaper.

In 1962 he assassinated a former Nazi rocket scientist, the newspaper claimed. Heinz Krug, who worked under Wernher von Braun on the programme to develop the V2 rockets that were used to devastating effect against London in the final stages of the war, disappeared without trace from Munich. He was working on a missile programme for the Egyptian government at the time.

It has long been suspected he was targeted by Israel, nervous of its then-enemy Egypt’s intentions.

Ha’aretz claims he was murdered by Skorzeny on Mossad’s orders.
Fearing for his life after several other scientists on the programme received threatening letters and calls from Israel, Krug hired the former SS officer as a bodyguard.

But he was unaware the man he had hired to protect him was a double agent working for the Israelis.

Skorzeny and Krug drove into the woods north of Munich with two bodyguards to talk undisturbed.

But once they arrived Skorzeny shot the scientist dead and he and his accomplices destroyed his body with acid, leaving no trace.

Skorzeny, personally decorated by Hitler with the highest rank of the Iron Cross, was a highly unlikely Mossad recruit.

He was most famous as part of the Nazi commando team that rescued the deposed Italian leader Benito Mussolini from captivity in 1942.
But he was also involved in the operation to seize control of Hungary in 1944 when the Nazi puppet regime of Miklos Horthy was on the verge of suing for peace with Russia.

That operation resulted in tens of thousands of Hungarian Jews who had survived until then being sent to their deaths in the concentration camps.

At the end of the war Skorzeny was captured by US forces but dramatically escaped with the help of three former SS officers disguised in American uniforms.
Skorzeny claimed in his memoirs the US authorities had let him escape.

He fled to Spain where he was allowed to settle under the fascist Franco regime.
According to Ha’aretz, Mossad tracked him down but instead of assassinating him, the intelligence service decided to recruit him.

“I met and ran Skorzeny,” Rafael Eitan, the former Mossad officer who successfully abducted Adolf Eichmann and brought for him for trial in Israel, told Ha’aretz.

He refused to give any further details, but according to the newspaper Skorzeny told Mossad he was not interested in money.

Instead demanded his name be taken off the list of war criminals kept by Simon Wiesenthal, the Austrian Nazi hunter.

Even Mossad was unable to persuade Wiesenthal to delete Skorzeny’s name. So the intelligence service forged a letter from Wiesenthal “confirming” that his name had been removed.

Skorzeny lived the rest of his life in Spain, dying of cancer in 1975.
At his funeral former SS colleagues openly gave the Hitler salute and sang Nazi songs, unaware the man they were mourning was also an Israeli agent.

  1. How does this story relate to Israel today? Consider this claim:

In another of a seemingly unending string of controversies over anti-Jewish or anti-Israeli comments by members of Britain's Labour Party, Bob Campbell, a party activist who has reportedly claimed that ISIS is controlled by Israel, denies that he has been the suspended by the party.
The London-based Jewish Chronicle and Sunday Times have reported over the past several days that Campbell was suspended pending a party investigation after allegedly posting a claim on Facebook that the Israel's Mossad intelligence agency runs ISIS. He is also said to have claimed Israel was behind this month’s terrorist bombing in Brussels.

Given Israel’s history of terror and deceit, is there a disconnect between events today rooted in Israel’s past?

It is no stretch of the imagination that Israel would not use ISIS if it saw it to its advantage. Israel killed American servicemen when it saw it advantageous to do so. Israel is no friend or ally to anyone.

Israeli corruption is rife in almost all US institutions. Will Israel use that to its advantage?

Neither of you would be hard on Trump today if you'd seen him interact with that young woman he helped.

    Nonsense.

I would venture the greatest tyrants in history at one point or another in their lives have done a kindness to one or more other human beings especially if it didn't cost them anything or obstruct what they were trying to do.

I have no doubt Trump can be charming. At times, I have to admit he can be funny. He has some ideas I agree with. Even the bigotry doesn't bother me all that much. There is a certain level of bigotry in everyone whether they want to admit it or not. However, when a candidate makes increasing torture, making it legal, a plank in his political platform and promotes it in his run for the presidency, it tells me one thing, this boy is one sick puppy.

IMO, this country is going to hell (figuratively of course lest I raise the ire of Deuce and Rufus). The country is polarized into right and left and is drawing the worst from both sides in its devolving spiral into a statist dystopia.

You have the left which has for decades been trying (and succeeding) in turning the country into a PC neutered, statist, socialized, 'utopia', ruled by an enlightened and privileged elite governing over a population of benighted Eloi willing to continue to vote them into power in based on promises of continuing the cornucopia of goodies they promise.

Then you have the right driven by government fear and war mongering that drives the populace to publicly derogate and disavow the values that formed the basis for this country in the first place. It produces leaders, modern day Morlocks, like George Bush, Max Boot, and Donald Trump who suggest that the only way to defeat terrorists is to become terrorists ourselves. And the sheeple climb out from in under their beds and shout 'Ooray', willing to give up basic principles, rights expressed in the Constitution, privacy, and morality all on the basis of a promise never fulfilled that the government will guarantee their safety.

And the devolution continues as they quake in government induced fear.

Then we hear statements like, 'but he was so nice to this lady' or 'he likes puppies, so cute'.

How easily the sheeple are swayed.

    Makes me want to puke.

  12. Highlights

Little else may be falling into place but the U.S. labor market is likely to show its strength once again in Friday's March employment report, based at least on ADP's private payroll count which came in very near expectations at 200,000 on the nose. There's little change from February when ADP's sample posted revised growth of 205,000.

Expectations for Friday's private payrolls are also at 200,000 which would prove a very healthy level though down from February's even stronger 230,000. ADP isn't always an accurate barometer of the government's data but it has definitely been useful the last several reports, signaling convincing acceleration in December, slowing in January, then strength again in February.

  14. "Why Jewish group’s embrace of Trump is more than a little ironic

    GERALD CAPLAN
Special to The Globe and Mail
    Published Tuesday, Mar. 29, 2016 3:25PM EDT

One of the shabbiest moments in this year’s dishonourable American presidential race will not affect the outcome at all, but it adds to the sense of U.S. democracy having lost its way. Donald Trump was intimately involved, but this time not responsible.

Mr. Trump appeared before 18,000 attendees of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and wowed the crowd. Impossible to imagine but true.

AIPAC is the extremely influential lobbying group that claims to represent American Jewry. Its objective is to make sure that Israel’s interests always come first – even before those of the United States. With only tiny exceptions, no American politician ever crosses AIPAC; the consequences can be political suicide.

    ReplyDelete

    1. The AIPAC-Trump story is ironic several times over.

First, as is well known, some have compared Mr. Trump to Adolf Hitler. While this seems rather overwrought, it’s also understandable. After all, encouraging his supporters to use violence against opponents is certainly right out of the Nazi playbook. Moreover, as any genocide scholar will tell you, the early steps to genocide include targeting and demeaning certain specified groups based on their religion, ethnicity or nationality. This is part of the dehumanization of this group, since it’s only logical to want to eliminate subhuman species. This, of course, describes the shocking way Mr. Trump talks about Mexicans and Muslims.

Among the groups in the world most sensitive to any remote trace of revived Nazism, AIPAC surely takes pride of place. Hitler means anti-Semitism, the Holocaust, the extermination of six million European Jews. AIPAC is ready to cry “anti-Semite” if someone dares so much as criticize Israeli government policies. Rationally, one would have expected AIPAC not to invite Mr. Trump to this conclave but rather to ban him for his incendiary rhetoric. Or, if it allowed him to appear, to make its disgust for him absolutely clear. The last thing anyone would have predicted was enthusiastic support.

But the world is not easily predicted. So blind have these self-declared leaders of American Jewry become that not only did they not protest against his appearance, they eventually offered huge cheers. The irony: While much of America is terrified by the prospect of president Donald Trump, prominent Jews, of all people, give him a standing ovation. Even for this campaign, it was a surrealistic and distressing moment.

      Delete
    2. There’s another irony here. AIPAC’s power is actually based on a lie. It doesn’t speak for the majority of American Jews at all. The clear majority of Jews don’t share AIPAC’s extreme position on all things Israeli. A long series of polls show that the majority of American Jews actually want an end to the expansion of Jewish settlements in the occupied territories; AIPAC will not tolerate American politicians even raising the issue. And it’s AIPAC that regularly gives Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a platform to attack President Barack Obama, for whom most Jews have voted in two elections.

There’s a third irony here – or maybe these are travesties – which is quite obvious. All three Republican contenders spoke to this huge gathering, as did Hillary Clinton. All were invited. The only candidate that AIPAC chose not to invite is the first Jew to to win a presidential primary in either major party. You would have thought, indeed taken for granted, that AIPAC would have embraced and feted Bernie Sanders, many of whose most enthusiastic devotees are young American Jews following in the once-great progressive tradition of American Jewry.

Mr. Sanders’s position on Israel and Palestine can best be described as moderate and balanced, one that many Canadians would like their government to adopt. Yet in AIPAC terms, indeed in American terms, this stance is considered radical, dangerous and even anti-Semitic. So mindlessly pro-Israel is AIPAC that it chooses to humiliate Mr. Sanders by ostracizing him. Mr. Trump, yes; Mr. Sanders, no. Ted Cruz, the fanatical evangelical, yes; Mr. Sanders, no.

In the process, America’s Jewish establishment sends a message that it is part of the problem of the Middle East and has nothing to contribute to the solution. But we can be sure it is oblivious to this outcome.

AIPAC terrifies nearly every member of Congress, and the White House too. When it says to jump, American pols ask, “How high?”

Except of course for Mr. Sanders, who jumps only to his conscience and sense of honour. It’s another reason to be dismayed that Mr. Sanders can’t win. He could have approached the Middle East with no obligations to powerful special-interest groups.

Don’t get me wrong. As I’ve repeatedly argued, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict may well be beyond any solution, both sides doomed to continue hating and hurting each other. No American president will easily change that equation. Indeed, all four presidential-nomination candidates who spoke to AIPAC descended to new levels of embarrassing pandering, each swearing to be Israel’s greatest friend ever. It’s a genuine tragedy for the prospect of peace and security in the Middle East, and for the Palestinians above all."

  15. Obamacare Enrollees Are Sick And They’re Getting A Lot Of Health Care

WASHINGTON — The landmark health care reform law known as Obamacare appears to be succeeding in its twin goals of extending health coverage to the uninsured and enabling people to access life-saving treatments.

But this humanitarian success also underscores the newness and fragility of the remade health insurance market, as a new report issued Wednesday by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association shows. The customers who flocked to the exchanges are sick and are using a lot of medical care, a trend that could jeopardize Obamacare’s gains by destabilizing the health insurance system.

Greater access to health care for people with pre-existing conditions who were shut out of the old market and those whose low incomes made health insurance too expensive before the Affordable Care Act’s subsidies became available in 2014 was one of the core goals of the law President Barack Obama enacted six years ago.

And health insurance exchanges are growing, with nearly 13 million enrolled as of Jan. 31, when the most recent sign-up period ended. Subsidized coverage from these marketplaces and the expansion of Medicaid under Obamacare in 31 states and the District of Columbia are the main reasons why an estimated 20 million more people have health insurance this year than before the Affordable Care Act became law and the uninsured rate declined to a historic low.

But the sicker population making up these exchange marketplaces doesn’t seem to be getting balanced out by healthier customers who pay into the insurance risk pool without drawing down as much in benefits. Absent that balance, health insurance companies will raise rates further in future years to cover their costs, which could price out consumers — especially those who are healthy and who need coverage least and thus are the least costly to insure.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In key respects, this shouldn’t be surprising, and reflects the dire need for health care access that persisted in the pre-Obamacare health care system.

Prior to the Affordable Care Act, health insurance companies could turn away people with pre-existing medical conditions, offer them coverage that cost much more than for healthier people, or sell them a policy that expressly didn’t cover health problems with which they’d been diagnosed.

Others were among the ranks of the uninsured because they couldn’t afford health insurance, and being poor is associated with being less healthy. And people in both categories may have had ailments that weren’t discovered until they gained coverage and visited medical providers. In addition, people with serious medical conditions previously covered by special “high-risk pool” insurance programs transitioned into the regular market.

“We’re seeing here the consequences of a very complex insurance system and the fact that now, people who need the care have a chance to find the care,” said Donald Berwick, a physician who founded the Massachusetts-based Institute for Healthcare Improvement who now serves as president emeritus and senior adviser.

      In the insurance business, it’s referred to as . . . . . . .

  20. 6 Years After Obamacare’s Passage, Haters Refuse to Accept Reality

During the Obama era, the keenest minds in the conservative movement have had to develop policy responses to the administration’s agenda. But those policies had to be crafted within bounds established by Republican politics — conservative ideas were useful only insofar as conservative politicians could plausibly advocate them. Republican politicians, in turn, had to operate within the bounds of what their voters considered acceptable. And Republican voters, as the 2016 election cycle has made abundantly clear to even those long committed to denying it, are bat-shit crazy.

That frothing quality burst forth in its fullest form during the debate over health-care reform, in the summer of 2009. Angry Republicans flooded town hall meetings to denounce a law that they saw as redistributing resources from people like themselves to people who were not, identifying sources of grievance both real (cuts to Medicare) and imagined (death panels). The Republican Party’s stance on health-care reform took shape during those days of rage, and even six years after the law’s passage, its position on Obamacare has remained unaltered. The law is a failure and must be repealed, and no evidence can convince conservatives otherwise. A half-dozen years after its passage, none have dared revise that stance.

One of Obamacare’s goals, beyond expanding access to health insurance and paying for its budgetary costs, was to “bend the curve” of health-care inflation, which has historically grown faster than the cost of other things. The law implemented a wide array of reforms designed to . . . . . .

    1. Who’s up for another round of big ObamaCare rate hikes?

posted at 4:01 pm on March 30, 2016 by Ed Morrissey

Remember how ObamaCare would drive the cost curve downward? Recall how premiums would get controlled by forcing everyone into purchasing comprehensive health-insurance policies and thus eliminating free riders on the system? As insurers begin preparing to set premium prices and deductibles for Year Four of ObamaCare, one major insurer finds that the risk pool looks a lot like Years One through Three of ObamaCare — sicker, costlier, and, well … riskier:

Consumers who signed up for Blue Cross Blue Shield health plans through the Affordable Care Act’s insurance marketplaces these last two years tended to be sicker and incurred greater medical costs than people with BCBS coverage through their jobs.

The enrollees in those individual health plans in 2014 and 2015 had higher rates of diabetes, depression and heart disease, according to a report released Wednesday by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association.

Medical costs for individuals who obtained coverage through the ACA’s insurance exchanges were, on average, 22 percent higher than those with employer-based coverage in 2015, according to the association. Average monthly medical spending per member was $559 for individual enrollees in 2015, for example, versus $457 for group members.

So much for the universal mandate. As predicted, people are complying when it suits them, and it suits them when they get sick or injured. The reason for this is clear — ACA exchange insurance is only good for catastrophic events. Otherwise, the deductibles are so high — more than $5000 a year for bronze plans on average and still in four figures for silver plans — that most people won’t ever qualify for their insurance unless they get hospitalized. Those people are seeing the reward of compliance as far less than the cost of non-compliance and are staying out of the system altogether.

As a result, the forced entry of healthy subscribers hasn’t materialized to offset the high utilization costs of sicker subscribers accessing the system. Also, the curve of utilization doesn’t appear to be smoothing out much either. ObamaCare advocates acknowledged that utilization would spike briefly as those with pre-existing conditions finally gained coverage, but that the phenomenon would be short-lived. After three years, the spike shows no sign of receding, and insurers are now faced with consistently higher utilization rates than expected.

What does this all mean? It means that the rate hikes are not over. Some expected FY2016 to have the last significant rate hike in premiums, with subsequent rate adjustments more in line with annual pre-ACA increases. In most states, rates increased by double digits; in Minnesota, some qualifying plans increased premiums by 50% from the year before. The spikes in FY2017 may not reach that amplitude, but they’re not going to be simple inflation-indexed increases. And deductibles won’t be shrinking in the near future, either.

Back in '00 I was in a truck driving on some old logging roads across the north side of Priest Lake when a mountain lion came bounding up from downhill to the left, leaped across the whole logging road in front of me in one giant stride and continued bounding uphill to the right, off into the woods.

Pretty rare to see one in the wild. Pretty cool.

    3. Yup, cool.

...luckily, there was a pack of wolves passing by and they were able to distract the lion long enough for the guys to escape. Then, not wanting to hurt the mountain lion in any way they backed off and disappeared silently into the woods. The last of the wolves, a large white male, obviously the alpha male, nodded low to the stranger and then turned and disappeared into the woods like some ancient ghost.

And thus another legend of the Idaho wolf packs was born.

    6. No,no,no.....that's an old Nimiipuu (The Real People) legend handed down for generations from before the white encroachment.

The wolves in question being of our old native and smaller variety, Lobos as they used to be called, before they got run out, along with the elk, by the huge bastards from Northern Canada.

So the result of the wolf 'reintroduction' is:

      1) The extinction of the native Lobos
      2) The near extinction of all our Elk

A few elk have found a sanctuary of sorts around the farms and farmers, though the wolves have followed.

The wolves must beware though. All the farmers are armed and dangerous, and death to wolves, who now may be shot 24/7/12.

My friend Wayne has now lost a total of 10 livestock and horses to the wolves.

Clinton superdelegate disbarred while awaiting prison sentencing

posted at 6:01 pm on March 30, 2016 by Jazz Shaw

Just a quick update on the superdelegate situation for the Democrats this evening. Normally we’d be talking about which of the army of superdelegates is backing which candidate or how they might make the process a tad bit more democratic in nature, but this story has to do with who will (or more to the point, won’t) be attending the festivities in Philadelphia. You may recall that we earlier talked about one of Hillary Clinton’s long time friends and supporters who also happens to be a superdelegate, Sheldon Silver. The disgraced former Speaker of the State Assembly in New York was previously convicted of a raft of corruption charges and is currently awaiting sentencing where he could receive up to 130 years behind bars. (A rather neat trick since he’s already 72 years old.)

Now, adding insult to injury, they’ve taken away Silver’s license to practice law in the Empire State.

Former Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver is now officially a former lawyer, too.

A state appeals court on Tuesday ruled the 72-year-old disgraced Democrat effectively lost his license in November when he was convicted in federal court of violating federal honest services laws. A jury found that he took $3.5 million in legal fees from clients and then did favors for them that involved his elected office.

The panel of judges in the Manhattan Appellate Division said that by state law, a felony conviction means an automatic disbarment at the time of the conviction.

If we’ve learned anything about Mr. Silver over these past two years, it’s that he really doesn’t like giving up his titles, ranks and privileges. When he was initially arrested and charged, he stepped down as Speaker only reluctantly and after much badgering from party leaders, but still didn’t resign from office. Then, after being convicted and facing forcible ejection from office, he still didn’t want to give up his law practice and position as a member of the bar. Frankly, I’m just hoping we don’t find out he’s a Boy Scout troop leader as well or that could end up being yet another court case.

But there’s one thing they can’t take away from him… his status as a Hillary Clinton superdelegate. The party has no apparatus in place to strip someone of that honor no matter how badly they embarrass the candidate and the rest of the party. And Sheldon seems to be in no mood to give it up quietly. Frankly, if he can stay out of jail long enough on some sort of appeal I’d love to see him show up at the convention to proudly cast his vote for Hillary (assuming she’s not behind bars herself, of course) and keep the network cameras trained on him the entire time.

What a great bit of imagery for the Democrats’ candidate selection process.
