Blair, Clinton and Obama Killing Gaddafi: “We have no problem, just leave us alone,” the Libyan leader told Blair. “We are not fighting them, they are attacking us,” he said.

Gaddafi accused Blair of ‘supporting Al-Qaeda,’ unseen phone transcripts reveal

Transcripts of two phone calls between Tony Blair and Colonel Muammar Gaddafi reveal the Libyan dictator forced the former prime minister to confirm he did not support Al-Qaeda, as civil war engulfed the North African state.
On Thursday, the ex-PM submitted a transcript of the calls he made to Gaddafi on February 25, 2011, to MPs as part of their investigation into the UK’s policy on Libya.
Addressing MPs in Parliament, Blair insisted he contacted Gaddafi as a “concerned private citizen,” and confirmed he cleared the phone calls with Prime Minister David Cameron and the US State Department.

Blair accused of supporting Al-Qaeda

Blair appears to have been pressured to respond to a number of allegations during the phone calls, including claims he supported Al-Qaeda.
People spreading rumors through the TV stations. Those people are from Guantanamo, we know them by name, they support Al-Qaeda – do you support Al-Qaeda?” Gaddafi asked Blair.
Blair, who drove the thaw in relations between the West and Gaddafi, replied: “No, absolutely not.
Gaddafi then accused the ex-PM of attempting to recolonize Libya.
It seems this is colonization, I will have to arm the people and get ready for a fight.”
Blair insisted: “No one wants to recolonize Libya.
Let me be clear, no one wants to recolonize Libya – Libya is for its people,” he said.

‘Get to a safe place’

During the conversation, the ex-PM urged Gaddafi to get to a “safe place” in order to promote a peace process in Libya.
The transcripts show Blair was attempting to convince Gaddafi to allow a peaceful resolution to the crisis engulfing Libya and avoid a protracted civil war.
The position of the leader is crucial, if he indicates that he wants this to occur now, and that he will stand aside and go somewhere safe I think this will resolve this peacefully,” Blair told Gaddafi, referring to him in the third person.
He needs to signal acceptance of that change and he needs to stand aside to let that happen peacefully.”

‘We have no problem’

However, the deposed Libyan leader repeatedly refused to leave the country and insisted there was not much fighting going on in Libya.
We have no problem, just leave us alone,” the Libyan leader told Blair.
We are not fighting them, they are attacking us,” he said.
I want to tell you the truth. It is not a difficult situation at all. The story is simply this: an organization has laid down sleeping cells in North Africa. Called the Al-Qaeda Organization in North Africa ... The sleeping cells in Libya are similar to dormant cells in America before 9/11.”
He then warned Blair that jihadists would attack Europe if his regime was allowed to collapse.
They [jihadists] want to control the Mediterranean and then they will attack Europe.”
Blair has since been accused of trying to protect Gaddafi when he warned him to flee Libya.

‘I was not trying to save Gaddafi’

Speaking during a Foreign Affairs Select Committee inquiry into the UK’s policy in Libya, the ex-PM said: “It’s been presented as if I was trying to save Gaddafi. I wasn’t trying to ‘save Gaddafi."
My concern was not for his safety, it was to get him out of this situation.”
After the uprising, in which Gaddafi was killed, the relationship between the West and Libya came under heavy criticism in the wake of numerous commercial deals.
Libya remains in the grip of civil war with many areas controlled by Islamic extremists linked to Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).
Crispin Blunt MP, chair of the Committee, said: “The transcripts supplied by Mr Blair provide a new insight into the private views of Colonel Gaddafi as his dictatorship began to crumble around him.
The failure to follow Mr Blair’s calls to ‘keep the lines open’ and for these early conversations to initiate any peaceful compromise continue to reverberate.”

Blair’s business interests tripled in profits

The transcripts were made public a day after accounts published for Blair’s business, Windrush Ventures Ltd, reveal his company saw its turnover increase by a third to £19.4 million in 2015, while profits tripled to £2.6 million.
Staff working for the firm have received an average pay increase of more than £30,000, according to the Mail Online.
Tony Blair’s office said in a statement: “As we stress every year, the financial results released today do not present the overall profits of either of the Windrush or Firerush businesses.”

Kerry promised that the US would continue to ensure that Iran lives up to its other obligations outlined in the deal, but would also “address the questions of Iran’s activities, whether it’s missile activities or other activities in the region,” including “the return of Americans who have been unjustly detained” by the government in Tehran.

The secretary’s statement comes as the Republican-led House Foreign Affairs Committee approved a bill that could undermine the Iran deal. The ‘Iran Terror Finance Transparency Act’ would increase lawmakers’ oversight of the agreement by requiring the Obama administration to uphold its commitment not to ease pressure on Iran's support for terrorism or its ballistic missile program, Reuters reported.

Critics of the bill, including some Democrats who initially voted to kill the Iran deal in September, say that Republicans are trying to scuttle the agreement by violating its terms.

"I believe it doesn't serve any purpose to have bills like this that are designed to kill the deal," Representative Eliot Engel (D-New York), the ranking member on the Foreign Affairs Committee, told Reuters. "I don't want to vote 62 or 63 times on killing the Iran agreement," referring to the number of times that the House has voted to repeal the president’s signature health care reform law.

Engel voted with the majority of the House of Representatives in September to pass a resolution of disapproval against the Iran deal. The Senate also passed the resolution, which President Barack Obama then vetoed. With more than 33 senators supporting the agreement, however, lawmakers could not override the president’s decision.

Despite the concrete steps that Iran has already taken towards implementation of the deal, the Obama administration is expected to eventually impose new sanctions on Iran over its missile program, congressional aides told Reuters.

  2. They’re back!

From the look of the presidential campaign, war crimes are back on the American agenda. We really shouldn’t be surprised, because American officials got away with it last time—and in the case of the drone wars continue to get away with it today. Still, there’s nothing like the heady combination of a “populist” Republican race for the presidency and a national hysteria over terrorism to make Americans want to reach for those “enhanced interrogation techniques.” That, as critics have long argued, is what usually happens if war crimes aren’t prosecuted.

In August 2014, when President Obama finally admitted that “we tortured some folks,” he added a warning. The recent history of U.S. torture, he said, “needs to be understood and accepted. We have to as a country take responsibility for that so hopefully we don’t do it again in the future.” By pinning the responsibility for torture on all of us “as a country,” Obama avoided holding any of the actual perpetrators to account.

Unfortunately, “hope” alone will not stymie a serial war criminal—and the president did not even heed his own warning. For seven years his administration has done everything except help the country “take responsibility” for torture and other war crimes. It looked the other way when it comes to holding accountable those who set up and ran the CIA’s large-scale torture operations at its “black sites” around the world. It never brought charges against those who ordered torture at Guantánamo. It prosecuted no one, above all not the top officials of the Bush administration.

Now, in the endless run-up to the 2016 presidential elections, we’ve been treated to some pretty strange gladiatorial extravaganzas, with more to come in 2016. In these peculiarly American spectacles, Republican candidates hurl themselves at one another in a frenzied effort to be seen as the candidate most likely to ignore the president’s wan hope and instead “do it again in the future.” As a result, they are promising to commit a whole range of crimes, from torture to the slaughter of civilians, for which the leaders of some nations would find themselves hauled into international court as war criminals. But “war criminal” is a label reserved purely for people we loathe, not for us. To paraphrase former President Richard Nixon, if the United States does it, it’s not a crime.

    {...}

    ReplyDelete
  3. {...}

In the wake of the brutal attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, the promises being openly made to commit future crimes have only grown more forthright. A few examples from the presidential campaign trail should suffice to make the point:

    * Ted Cruz guarantees that “we” will “utterly destroy ISIS.” How will we do it? “We will carpet bomb them into oblivion”—that is, “we” will saturate an area with munitions in such a way that everything and everyone on the ground is obliterated. Of such a bombing campaign against the Islamic State, he told a cheering crowd at the Rising Tide Summit, “I don’t know if sand can glow in the dark, but we’re going to find out.” (It’s hard not to take this as a reference to the use of nuclear weapons, though in the bravado atmosphere of the present Republican campaign a lot of detailed thought is undoubtedly not going into any such proposals.)

    * Kindly retired pediatric neurosurgeon Ben Carson evidently has similar thoughts. When pressed by CNN co-moderator Hugh Hewitt in the most recent Republican debate on whether he was “tough” enough to be “okay with the deaths of thousands of innocent children and civilian[s],” Carson replied, “You got it. You got it.” He even presented a future campaign against the Islamic State in which “thousands” of children might die as an example of the same kind of tough love a surgeon sometimes exhibits when facing a difficult case. It’s like telling a child, he assured Hewitt, that “we’re going to have to open your head up and take out this tumor. They’re not happy about it, believe me. And they don’t like me very much at that point. But later on, they love me.” So, presumably, will those “dead innocent children” in Syria—once they get over the shock of being dead.

    * Jeb Bush’s approach brought what, in Republican circles, passes for nuance to the discussion of future war crimes policy. What Washington needs, he argued, is “a strategy” and what stands in the way of the Obama administration developing one is an excessive concern with the niceties of international law. As he put it, “We need to get the lawyers off the back of the warfighters. Right now under President Obama, we’ve created… this standard that is so high that it’s impossible to be successful in fighting ISIS.” Meanwhile, Jeb has surrounded himself with a familiar clique of neocon “advisers”—people like George W. Bush’s former Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz and his former Deputy National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley, who planned for and advocated the illegal U.S. war against Iraq, which touched off a regional war with devastating human consequences.

    * And then there is Donald Trump. Where to start? As a simple baseline for his future commander-in-chiefdom, he stated without a blink that he would bring back torture. “Would I approve waterboarding?” he told a cheering crowd at a November rally in Columbus, Ohio. “You bet your ass I would—in a heartbeat.” And for Trump, that would only be the beginning. He assured his listeners vaguely but emphatically that he “would approve more than that,” leaving to their imaginations whether he was thinking of excruciating “stress positions,” relentless exposure to loud noise, sleep deprivation, the straightforward killing of prisoners, or what the CIA used to delicately refer to as “rectal rehydration.” Meanwhile, he just hammers on when it comes to torture. “Don’t kid yourself, folks. It works, okay? It works. Only a stupid person would say it doesn’t work.”

  4. The election’s two big issues remain: a weak economy and global chaos. But for many voters, the revolt against political correctness is on.

Hillary Clinton, hostage to a PC-obsessed base, must mouth politically correct pabulum. Donald Trump joy-rides the wave.

An opening remains for an electable candidate who can point this revolt toward what it wants — a political win, at last.

“Terror arrests reported in Sacramento, Houston and Milwaukee,” by Denny Walsh and Sam Stanton, Sacramento Bee, January 7, 2016:

Federal agents have arrested a terror suspect in Sacramento, along with two others in Houston and Milwaukee in a case involving allegations that U.S. residents were in contact with and trying to provide assistance to Islamic State supporters, sources say.

No announcements were made regarding the arrests, but an unusual closed hearing was conducted Thursday afternoon in federal court in Sacramento with U.S. Magistrate Judge Edmund F. Brennan presiding behind closed doors.

No information regarding the hearing was posted on the court calendar or filed in publicly available court documents, and Sacramento FBI spokeswoman Gina Swankie said she could not discuss the matter.

“I can neither confirm nor deny any of the information in your email,” Swankie said in response to a request from The Sacramento Bee.

Federal prosecutors in Sacramento also declined to comment.

The Houston Chronicle reported that officials in that state had been briefed on the matter and that the Houston connection involved an Iraqi refugee living in the Texas city. The newspaper also said Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a statement Thursday afternoon on the matter.

“This is precisely why I called for a halt to refugees entering the U.S. from countries substantially controlled by terrorists,” Abbott said in a statement. “I once again urge the President to halt the resettlement of these refugees in the United States until there is an effective vetting process that will ensure refugees do not compromise the safety of Americans and Texans.”

California Gov. Jerry Brown’s office declined to comment on whether officials in California had been briefed and referred inquiries to the FBI….

Horrifying details emerge of Cologne attacks
    By Carol Brown

Information continues to emerge on the war zone that erupted in Cologne, Germany, on New Year’s eve when thousands of imports from Islamic lands threw bottles and fireworks into crowds and at the police, molested, raped, attacked, robbed, knifed, spit, defecated, urinated, vomited, ranted and raved as they turned an area of a beautiful city into a site of utter barbarism. (Other cities in Germany experienced similar violence on New Year’s eve which is only now beginning to be reported.)

One victim had a firecracker shoved into the hood of her jacket. When she tried to get it out, it fell into her jacket causing serious burns across her shoulder.

Dozens, and most likely hundreds of women were subjected to all manner of physical, sexual, and verbal assault. Authorities now believe that many of the attacks were “coordinated” by men traveling in gangs of 30-40, surrounding women to make escape impossible, and then victimizing them. Frantic women were forced to run a gauntlet through the mass of thousands of men hunting them down (as one victim described it), groping their breasts and between their legs, stripping their clothes off, spitting on them, cursing at them, and raping every available orifice.

    So where were the police?

Reports on police response runs the gamut, from responding to a riot while coming under direct attack, to victims saying the police were of no help, to police cover ups.

Initially it appears the police hid the truth from the public when, on New Year’s day, they announced the festivities from the night before had been peaceful with a “jolly atmosphere.” But as victims came forward with reports of rape and robbery and as protestors took to the streets to register their anger at the alleged inaction by the authorities, the truth and the scope of what unfolded began to leak out. When the police chief was asked why the police department claimed things on New Year’s eve were calm, he said: “That was wrong. For this we apologize.”

Meanwhile, The Daily Mail reports the perpetrators taunted the police, claimed they were untouchable, and insisted the police “be nice” to them. At least one New Year’s eve jihadist told the police: “I am Syrian. I must be handled in a friendly manner. Mrs. Merkel invited me here!” Many tore up their temporary residency permits, threw them at the police, and announced they’d have new ones in the morning.

With bottles and fireworks being thrown at members of law enforcement, the police decided the best strategy was to disperse the crowd, noting that crowd size made it impossible to identify attackers and make arrests.

    (Hmm.)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. But even after the crowd was dispersed, attacks continued and the mob ran into the railway station where platforms were jammed with people and as railway cars arrived covered with feces, urine, vomit, and people who had collapsed, unconscious.

One German man who witnessed the chaos from his vantage point at a luxury hotel where he works stated that the violence began with a serious stabbing that left the victim in critical condition and that things escalated from there (video here).

These people that we welcomed just three months ago with teddy bears and water bottles on the Munich main railway station started shooting at the police, which then had to come equipped with helmets onto the dome platform, to break that potential for violence. Well seasoned police officers then confessed to me that they never saw something like this in their entire life. They called it quote “a civil war like situation.” And no press coverage about that whatsoever.

The gentleman (who appears to be a bouncer at the hotel) described women coming up to him all evening, shivering, terrified, asking if they could just stand near him so he could look after them. (Eventually, he was attacked as well.) He described how perpetrators jumped on the heads of victims who were already laying on the ground as he reflected on his prior impressions of the immigration issue and “right wing propaganda” that now seemed to be corrected after his confrontation with reality.

He also discussed police ineptitude, describing how constraining attackers proved useless since there were no transports to take them to jail and there were no jail cells available since they were filled to capacity. To make room for the next bunch of savages (my word, not his), they released those who had been rounded up earlier, who then resumed their violent behavior. But not before spitting on police cars and screaming “F*ck the police!”.

One police officer said he hadn't seen anything like it in nearly 30 years and was struck by the high number of migrants and level of disrespect toward police officers. (Medical teams working that night confirmed the mob was comprised of “asylum seekers” and victims also corroborated that perpetrators were “migrants.”)

Has the State Department released a smoking gun in the Hillary Clinton e-mail scandal? In a thread from June 2011, Hillary exchanges e-mails with Jake Sullivan, then her deputy chief of staff and now her campaign foreign-policy adviser, in which she impatiently waits for a set of talking points. When Sullivan tells her that the source is having trouble with the secure fax, Hillary then orders Sullivan to have the data stripped of its markings and sent through a non-secure channel.

That should be game, set, and match, yes?

    hillary-e-mail2

“If they can’t, turn into nonpaper w no identifying heading and send nonsecure.” That’s an order to violate the laws handling classified material. There is no other way to read that demand. Regardless of whether or not Sullivan complied, this demolishes Hillary’s claim to be ignorant of marking issues, as well as strongly suggests that the other thousand-plus instances where this did occur likely came under her direction.

Fox News also noticed the e-mail this morning, although they don’t yet have a copy of it linked:

However, one email thread from June 2011 appears to include Clinton telling her top adviser Jake Sullivan to send secure information through insecure means.

In response to Clinton’s request for a set of since-redacted talking points, Sullivan writes, “They say they’ve had issues sending secure fax. They’re working on it.” Clinton responds “If they can’t, turn into nonpaper [with] no identifying heading and send nonsecure.”

Ironically, an email thread from four months earlier shows Clinton saying she was “surprised” that a diplomatic oficer named John Godfrey used a personal email account to send a memo on Libya policy after the fall of Muammar Qaddafi.

    1. It’s probably time to review the relevant criminal statutes again in this case, such as 18 USC 793:

      d) Whoever, lawfully having possession of, access to, control over, or being entrusted with any document, writing, code book, signal book, sketch, photograph, photographic negative, blueprint, plan, map, model, instrument, appliance, or note relating to the national defense, or information relating to the national defense which information the possessor has reason to believe could be used to the injury of the United States or to the advantage of any foreign nation, willfully communicates, delivers, transmits or causes to be communicated, delivered, or transmitted or attempts to communicate, deliver, transmit or cause to be communicated, delivered or transmitted the same to any person not entitled to receive it, or willfully retains the same and fails to deliver it on demand to the officer or employee of the United States entitled to receive it; or

      (e) Whoever having unauthorized possession of, access to, or control over any document, writing, code book, signal book, sketch, photograph, photographic negative, blueprint, plan, map, model, instrument, appliance, or note relating to the national defense, or information relating to the national defense which information the possessor has reason to believe could be used to the injury of the United States or to the advantage of any foreign nation, willfully communicates, delivers, transmits or causes to be communicated, delivered, or transmitted, or attempts to communicate, deliver, transmit or cause to be communicated, delivered, or transmitted the same to any person not entitled to receive it, or willfully retains the same and fails to deliver it to the officer or employee of the United States entitled to receive it; or

      (f) Whoever, being entrusted with or having lawful possession or control of any document, writing, code book, signal book, sketch, photograph, photographic negative, blueprint, plan, map, model, instrument, appliance, note, or information, relating to the national defense,
      (1) through gross negligence permits the same to be removed from its proper place of custody or delivered to anyone in violation of his trust, or to be lost, stolen, abstracted, or destroyed, or
      (2) having knowledge that the same has been illegally removed from its proper place of custody or delivered to anyone in violation of its trust, or lost, or stolen, abstracted, or destroyed, and fails to make prompt report of such loss, theft, abstraction, or destruction to his superior officer—

Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both.

Did those talking points get illegally transmitted on Hillary’s order? If so, then Sullivan may find himself in legal trouble, too. Paragraph (g) makes it clear that “each of the parties to such conspiracy shall be subject to the punishment provided for the offense which is the object of such conspiracy.”

This explains why more than a thousand pieces of classified information have found their way into Hillary’s unauthorized and unsecured e-mail system — and why the markings have been stripped from them. Hillary herself apparently ordered the Code Red, so to speak.

Update: Speaking of Code Red, thanks to the Drudge Report for the red-text link, and welcome to Drudge readers!

The face of the enemy: Matricide
    By Rick Moran

An Islamic State fighter executed his own mother in public because she encouraged him to leave the group, according to a Syrian monitoring group.

    Reuters:

The woman in her 40s had warned her son that a U.S.-backed alliance would wipe out Islamic State and had encouraged him to leave the city with her.

She was detained after he informed the group of her comments, according to the British-based Observatory, which monitors the war through a network of sources on the ground.

Citing local sources, the Observatory said the 20-year-old man executed his mother on Wednesday near the post office building where she worked in front of hundreds of people in Raqqa, a main base of operations for the group in Syria.

The Islamic State group, which controls wide areas of Syria and Iraq, has executed hundreds of people it has accused of working with its enemies or breaching of its ultra-conservative interpretation of Islam.

The Observatory reported on Dec. 29 that Islamic State had executed more than 2,000 Syrian civilians in the 18 months since it declared its "caliphate" over the territory it controls in Syria and Iraq. They included people killed on the grounds of homosexuality, practicing magic and apostasy.

Executing one's mother is about as sick as it gets. But we shouldn't be surprised. In the Soviet Union, children were encouraged to rat out their parents – and rewarded for it. The East German Stasi, the secret police, routinely used children to inform on their parents and relatives.

In societies that cannot allow any questioning, any doubts to seep into the body politic, turning children into informants, or encouraging matricide, keeps a lid on dissent. You would think such practices would be counterproductive. But there is tremendous fear that's engendered by the public spectacle of executing your own mother for the cause.

It works wonders as far as keeping people in line and cowing them into submission.

PHILADELPHIA, Jan 8 (Reuters) - A gunman claiming to have pledged allegiance to Islamic State militants shot and seriously wounded a Philadelphia police officer while he sat in his patrol car in an ambush-style attack, the city's police commissioner said on Friday.

Gunman Edward Archer of Philadelphia, who has been arrested, fired about 11 shots through the window of the officer's car, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross told reporters. He walked toward the car as he fired, eventually getting close enough to reach in the window.

"He has confessed to committing this cowardly act in the name of Islam," Ross told a press conference, adding that the man also referenced Islamic State militants.

Philadelphia Police Captain James Clark added, "He said he pledges his allegiance to Islamic State, he follows Allah and that was the reason he was called on to do this."

Byron York: In Iowa, Trump could be closer to Cruz than people think
    By Byron York (@ByronYork) • 1/8/16 12:01 AM

DES MOINES — Who's leading the Republican presidential race here in Iowa? Five of the last seven polls say Ted Cruz, including last month's edition of the influential Des Moines Register poll, which had Cruz ahead of second-place Donald Trump by ten points.

Yet there is a nagging sense — at least nagging to rival campaigns — that Trump may be closer to Cruz than the Register suggested, and that the race in Iowa could be virtually even at this point.

"I look at Trump, and his ceiling is so much higher than everyone else's," says Craig Robinson, a former political director of the Iowa GOP who now runs the Iowa Republican blog. "His campaign has gone out and had people self-identify that they're interested in him, and they've captured that data."

Robinson's assessment runs counter to one of the dearest-held assumptions of the political punditocracy. Many commentators believe Trump has a high floor but a low ceiling — that is, his supporters really, really support him and are unlikely to go anywhere else, but he doesn't have much room to grow, because he already has the loyalty of Republicans who are inclined to like him.

To Robinson, that's not the way it looks in Iowa. Start with the numbers.

In 2000, George W. Bush won the caucuses with 35,231 votes. In 2008, Mike Huckabee won with 40,954. In 2012, Rick Santorum won with 29,839.

"Ted Cruz is swimming in a pond where the capacity is about 30,000 votes," says Robinson. "I look at Trump and think that Trump is at that 30,000 mark now, and has the ability to blow past it, if they do a good job of turning their people out."

Trump has assembled an Iowa team that puts a lot of stock in gathering the basic data needed to turn potential voters into actual voters. But Cruz, finishing up a six-day race across Iowa, has run a smart campaign, too. "He is the natural fit," says Robinson of Cruz, "appealing to the activists who are going to turn out anyway." Of course, that might be the key to victory if it turns out Trump can't blow by, or even hit, the 30,000 mark. (On the other hand, Robinson believes Cruz's opposition to the ethanol mandate might do him more damage here than some Beltway Republicans believe.)......

The fact that you truncated what I actually said shows you to be either perfidious or simply dumb as a stump.

Compare the incident with the officer to the rape and bludgeoning of a young 7 year old girl in her own home here in Detroit a couple days ago. It's touch and go whether she will make it. She's still unconscious. They suspect the same guy committed 3 other rapes within the last month all in the same neighborhood.

This kind of shit goes on daily here and in many other areas in the country. Here's what we'll do. You start listing all the Muslim terrorist incidents throughout the country and I'll start listing the daily crime statistics from around here and we will see who comes up with more deaths and mayhem.

You talked about getting a lottery ticket. One of the local radio stations was comparing some of the statistics and probabilities for certain events.

Win the Super Ball Lottery: 1 in 294 million.

Getting struck by lighting: 1 in a million.

Getting attacked by a terrorist: 1 in 10 million.

You have 10 times more chance of being hit by lightning than of being attacked by terrorists.

Get back under your bed, wrap you binkie blanket around you, and suck on your thumb.

    What a wuss.

  25. How U.S. gun ownership became a ‘right,’ and why it isn’t

    Doug Saunders
    The Globe and Mail
    Published Friday, Jan. 08, 2016 1:26PM EST

"‘That,” we tell ourselves, “is just the way the Americans are.” We say it every time some firearms horror strikes a movie theatre or school or workplace. We say it when the U.S. President, reduced to tears, tries to use his limited powers to make minimal changes to laws that allow almost anyone to purchase and use an assault rifle.

After all, hasn’t it always been this way? Americans have always believed that they have a right to own and carry guns, we think. Strict gun control has never been an American option. That’s just the way they are.

Except that it isn’t. The American gun crisis, and the attitudes and laws that make it possible, are very new. The broad idea of a right to own firearms, along with the phenomenon of mass shootings, did not exist a generation ago; the legal basis for this right did not exist a decade ago.

Until 2002, every U.S. president and government had declared that the Constitution’s Second Amendment did not provide any individual right for ordinary citizens to own firearms. Rather, it meant what its text clearly states: that firearms shall be held by “the People” – a collective, not individual right – insofar as they are in the service of “a well-regulated militia.”

There had not, up to that point, been much ambiguity about this. “For 218 years,” legal scholar Michael Waldman writes in his book The Second Amendment: A Biography, “judges overwhelmingly concluded that the amendment authorized states to form militias, what we now call the National Guard,” and did not contain any individual right to own firearms.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The U.S. Supreme Court had never, until 2008, suggested even once that there was any such right. Warren Burger, the arch-conservative Supreme Court justice appointed by Richard Nixon, in an interview in 1991 described the then-new idea of an individual right to bear arms as “one of the greatest pieces of fraud, I repeat the word fraud, on the American public by special interest groups that I have ever seen in my lifetime.”

The idea clearly did not exist in the minds of Thomas Jefferson or any of the other framers of the Constitution; the individual right to own a gun was not mentioned anywhere in the Constitutional Convention, in the House of Representatives when it ratified the Second Amendment, in the state legislatures that debated it or generally in the correspondence of those involved with its creation.

And the public overwhelmingly agreed with this. For most of the 20th century, the National Rifle Association fought hard for gun control and strict limits on the availability of weapons.

As historian Jill Lepore has noted, in 1940, the editors of Detective Comics told its artists that Batman must never again dispatch a bad guy by shooting him, because of public revulsion at the idea of someone other than a police officer or a soldier holding a weapon – guns were things to be kept out of people’s hands.

The gun-rights movement emerged from the anti-government fringes in the 1960s and ’70s, took over the NRA and raised huge sums to impose its agenda on U.S. lawmakers. And it crept, rather quickly, into mainstream U.S. thought through the Republican Party. In 2002, John Ashcroft, previously known for his strong stances against racial desegregation and birth control, became the first federal attorney-general to proclaim that individuals should be able to own guns.

Then in 2008, in a reversal of all its precedents and a bizarre overturning of mainstream legal and historical scholarship, the Supreme Court ruled that there is indeed an individual right to own weapons (though one with limits). It was a court loaded with extreme-fringe figures, such as the decision’s author Antonin Scalia, appointed by Republican presidents in acts of partisan vengeance.

The individual right to bear arms is only a few years old, and based on nothing; its fall could be as quick as its rise. Once the Supreme Court has two more appointments by Democratic presidents, it will eventually provide a correct interpretation of the amendment, the interpretation Americans knew and respected for 217 years.

The attitude behind it will take longer to erase, but it too can fade. Americans who are horrified outnumber those who want weapons. This era will be remembered, in a generation, as one of those periodic explosions of irrationality in the United States, one with especially tragic results."

This article challenges the US-centristic definitions of 'democracy' and 'legitimacy' as applied in foreign policy. As such, it offers little new. A previous stream here discussed the consequences of the US propensity towards regime change and the hypocrisy involved. However, the reason I put it up are the four sets of small pictures shown in the article that tell the story much better than the words. They are before and after encapsulations of the situations in Afghanistan, Libya, Iraq, and Syria. Though the pictures are obviously chosen for effect, they do portray the reality in these countries prior to and after US intervention.

The pictures chosen for Afghanistan should impress those who argue for continued US presence there.

    Naturally, they won't.

Circumcision must be performed at the age of eight days for every male in the community (of this innumerable, multi-ethnic descendence), be he born in the house or acquired as a slave (17,9-10). And the story ends with Abraham performing on himself and on Ismael and all the boys born in the house the rite of circumcision (17,23-27).

    THINK ABOUT THAT:

    The EU's Man Problem

The EU's previously indiscriminate acceptance of migrants is possibly leading to a demographic time bomb that could disrupt the normal male/female ratio there as young, disproportionately male refugees flood the EU countries.

    Sweden offers one stark example.

According to Swedish government statistics, as of the end of November, 71 percent of all applicants for asylum to Sweden in 2015 were male. More than 21 percent of all migrants to Sweden were classified as unaccompanied minors, representing more than half of all minor migrants to the country. For accompanied minors, the sex ratio was about 1.16 boys for every one girl. But for unaccompanied minors, the ratio was 11.3 boys for every one girl. In other words, the Swedish case confirms IOM’s statistic that more than 90 percent of unaccompanied minors are male. Indeed, on average, approximately 90 unaccompanied boys entered Sweden every single day in 2015, compared with eight unaccompanied girls.

Those numbers are a recipe for striking imbalances within Sweden. Consider that more than half of these unaccompanied minors entering Sweden are 16 or 17 years old, or at least claim to be. (There are no medical checks of age for Swedish asylum-seekers, and applicants who say they’re under 18 receive special consideration in the asylum process.) In this age group more than three-quarters are unaccompanied, meaning they are overwhelmingly male. According to calculations based on the Swedish government’s figures, a total of 18,615 males aged 16 and 17 entered Sweden over the course of the past year, compared with 2,555 females of the same age. Sure enough, when those figures are added to the existing counts of 16- and 17-year-old boys and girls in Sweden—103,299 and 96,524, respectively, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s International Database—you end up with a total of 121,914 males in Sweden aged 16 or 17 and 99,079 females of the same age. The resulting ratio is astonishing: These calculations suggest that as of the end of 2015, there were 123 16- and 17-year-old boys in Sweden for every 100 girls of that age.

The implications for violence and crime are stark.
