Shimon Peres doubts Israel can win Permanent war or Survive Annexation of West Bank
By Juan Cole | (Informed Comment) | – –
Former Israeli president Shimon Peres, 92, gave an interview with the Associated Press Monday in which he spoke bluntly about the mistakes of prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu, without naming him.
Of the Greater Israel project of the country’s right wing, which aims at annexing the Palestinian West Bank while keeping the people there stateless, he said,
“Better to have a Jewish state on part of the land than have the whole land without the Jewish state,” he said. “Israel should implement the two-state solution for her own sake because if we should lose our majority, and today we are almost equal, we cannot remain a Jewish state or a democratic state . . . That’s the main issue, and to my regret they (the government) do the opposite.”
That is, Peres thinks that the Likud Party and its partners are living in a fool’s paradise if they believe they can annex the whole of Palestinian territory without getting the Palestinians as Israeli citizens eventually. And then, Peres says, no more Israel as a Jewish state.
Netanyahu is willing to live by the sword more or less permanently in order to accomplish his annexation of the Palestinian West Bank. Peres thinks this approach foolish and dangerous.
“The alternative to two states is a continued war and nobody can maintain a war forever. If you say we should live on our sword don’t forget that there are other swords as well . . .
Peres called bullshit on Netanyahu’s constant refrain that he is ready for peace talks, noting that he never has actually concluded any peace agreements. It is all talk, he said.
“A politician and a government should be judged by one way only, on the record of what you do or did, not on what you say . . .”
Peres remains convinced that assassinated Israeli labor leader Yitzhak Rabin, killed by an Israeli rightwinger, would have made peace with the Palestinians and that his killing was a turning point in Israel’s history.
This is Juan speaking: I went to visit the tomb of Yitzhak Rabin the last time I was in Tel Aviv. I was disappointed that it seemed small and hard to find. He seemed to me to deserve something grander. Maybe what’s left of the Israeli left wing can do something about this.
The big difference between Peres and Netanyahu is that Peres is a realistic Zionist. He has his eyes open about the likely consequences of the annexation of the Palestinian West Bank. The world is turning against Israel because no one likes Apartheid practices or creeping ethnic cleansing. That Israel can usurp the land without absorbing the people seems a remote possibility to Peres.
Another point of realism is that Peres understands that the Arabs and other pro-Palestinian powers won’t be weak and supine forever. Already the Gulf states are building highly sophisticated militaries. Turkey, which under President Tayyip Erdogan is pro-Palestinian, is a member of NATO and has actually had Israel disinvited from some NATO activities. Israel’s nuclear arsenal of several hundred bombs forestalls any conventional invasion. But we increasingly live in an era of micro-wars, in the fight against which Israel has proved vulnerable.
Netanyahu thinks he can fight a forever war, and that he can grab up the Palestinian West Bank while successfully excluding the Palestinians from the rights of citizenship in a state.
Peres is sure he cannot do either.

Way too many. We are a terrorist generating machine. How could we not be as we are attacking one country after another, killing their people, causing millions of other to lose their homes, ruining their saving, wrecking their economy, creating waves of refugees, destroying wealth and savings?
Here is a simple formula. You want to stop creating terrorism, quit attacking and killing others terrorizing them.
As insane as our policy has been, we can get away with it. The US has a huge economy, military and economic structure and a population of over 300 million but most of all is a vast geographic spread.
Geographic size trumps everything for defense purposes. The Russians taught that lesson to the French, the Nazis and everyone else that tried to take it.
There is no fort, no aircraft carrier, or no small geographic area or colony that can outwit strategic depth. The US has it in spades as does Russia. Israel has none. Israel hides behind a 7000 year old technology a wall and a 75 year old technology, nuclear weapons.
Israel may be a military power but it is a geographic piss ant. You remind us of its size every other post.
Unlike a smart small country, Switzerland, one that maintains security and peace with good economic and diplomatic relations with all its neighbors, Israel antagonizes or wars with most of hers. Israel has alienated the majority of almost every other country on the planet.
Talking shit about what your seven million are going to do to 1.5 billion may appeal to your inner Judaic superman but you can’t take a punch. Israel has a glass jaw in that it has no strategic depth and is dependent on the benevolence of one country the USA. Without the USA , Israel is fucked and if you believe that there is an unbreakable bond between any two countries on the planet, you don’t know history.

ReplyDeleteWhile there is no denying Peres' views on Bibi are spot on, Peres has proved a weak sister, risk averse in pursuing his purported goals for peace. He had his big chance in 1995 after Rabin was assassinated and he blew it.
Israel has always been pretty much politically divided 50/50 between right and left except during periods where major security events occur at which times public opinion can shift for a while. Right after Rabin's death, public opinion shifted in Labor's favor. Peres took over as interim PM. Had he the guts to risk it, he could have called for spot elections and built a coalition to push forward on the Oslo accords. Instead, he hesitated and waited for the elections scheduled for the following summer. He then ran and lost a narrow decision to Bibi. That was the end of any 'peace settlements' talk.
Rabin was assassinated by a radical Israeli right-winger because the guy thought Rabin had given away too much in signing the Oslo Accords. The killings and rioting that occurred leading up to the 1996 elections was from right-wing Palestinian elements that thought Arafat had given away too much in the Oslo Accords. The result was a shift in public opinion that gave Bibi a narrow victory in the election. By waiting, Peres blew it.
It is noteworthy that the only other Israeli PM in recent history who had shown an apparent willingness to reach a peace settlement with the PA, Ehud Olmert, was also defeated by Netanyahu thus putting an end to that effort also.
.
Israel did not "end" the peace process in any way.
DeleteYou might use that amazing analytical powers to understand the UNITY government of the Palestinian...
You cannot find a partner in a peace process that advocates your genocide.
You do remember Hamas? The ISIS of the palestinians?
But not to give the PA an easy out, the Fatah is responsible for a sizable number of terrorist attacks as well.
It is noteworthy that the USA promotes and keeps the PA alive and well.. Maybe (since it's all about money according to deuce) the Palestinians should be out off of aid, now that they are publicly in violation of the Oslo accords...

I can see where you, a graduate of the Idahoan education system and an English major, might miss the point of the post. To understand it requires some knowledge of the history of the so-called peace process. Trying to absorb the issues involved might be a little (?) tough for you.
The subject post on this stream was Peres' article pushing the need for a two-state solution and denigrating, though not by name, Bibi's anti-two-state mind set. There was no inconsistency in my post above and my previous statements.
My post above was a response to the Peres article, my position being that while I don't doubt he is committed to the two-state solution, he was unwilling to take the risks involved in attempting to push the process to a successful conclusion when he had the chance. The rest of my post agreed with Peres' view of Bibi as a man adamantly opposed to a two-state solution.
In general, I was merely talking about the only two PM's in recent history who could have been confused with someone who was a real proponent of a two-state solution, Peres who while committed was too weak and Olmert who could have been serious or who could have been trying to use the peace process to divert attention from his problems with Gaza and with charges of corruption.
These are merely two fleeting points in Israeli history where there 'seemed' something could be done. They didn't last long. And in both cases, it was Netanyahu who replaced these two and put an end to any real chance of peace. Today, in Israel things are moving farther and farther from a deal every day. There is NO chance for a negotiated settlement between the current players. Any settlement will have to be forced upon the participants by external parties. In this sense, Peres is right.

Office of Civil Rights says disguised boy has right to shower with girls
By Ed Straker
The Department of Education's office of civil rights says that a disguised boy has been discriminated against because he is not allowed to shower naked with girls.
Federal education authorities, staking out their firmest position yet on an increasingly contentious issue, found Monday that an Illinois school district violated anti-discrimination laws when it did not allow a transgender student who identifies as a girl and participates on a girls’ sports team to change and shower in the girls’ locker room without restrictions.
The Education Department gave 30 days to the officials of Township High School District 211 to reach a solution or face enforcement, which could include administrative law proceedings or a Justice Department court action. The district could lose some or all of its Title IX funding.
In a letter sent Monday, the Office for Civil Rights of the Department of Education told the Palatine district that requiring a transgender student to use private changing and showering facilities was a violation of that student’s rights under Title IX, a federal law that bans sex discrimination. The student, who identifies as female but was born male, should be given unfettered access to girls’ facilities, the letter said.
The boy should be given unfettered access to naked girls. What's confusing about that?
The district said she was allowed to change inside the girls’ locker room, but only behind a curtain. The student, who has not been publicly identified, has said she would probably use that curtain to change. But she and the federal government have insisted that she be allowed to make that decision voluntarily, and not because of requirements by the district.
That's right! The boy should decide whether he gets to see the other girls naked and show them his private parts.
“What our client wants is not hard to understand:She wants to be accepted for who she is and to be treated with dignity and respect — like any other student,” said John Knight, director of the L.G.B.T. and H.I.V. Project of the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois[.]
The boy just wants a little dignity and respect – just like any other boy who wants to see girls naked in close quarters!
All kidding aside, this is sick, and this is perverted, and this perversion is being coercively pushed by the highest levels of government. This is not about the "dignity" of this arrogant, perverted boy, who was given his own changing room. He demands to see naked girls and for naked girls to see his male body, and he doesn't care about anyone's "dignity" or "respect" but his own.
If you click through to the comment section of the Times article, you will see that even most liberals are horrified by this. Most people hate this kind of extreme leftism, with girls staging walkouts rather than letting disguised boys watch them undress.
This is an enormous opening for Republicans. Who is waging the "war on women" now? It is radical Democrats pushing for girls to be exposed to naked men. Now Hillary Clinton has become a born-again transvestite supporter. Would it really be hard for a Republican in a debate to turn to her and say, "Mrs. Clinton, do you really want girls to be forced to expose themselves to boys in locker rooms?"
It's indefensible. It sounds like a small issue compared to illegal immigration and the debt, but I think a candidate who focuses on this could destroy Clinton's credibility. Unfortunately, while this topic has been much in the news, most of the Republican candidates have been quiet about it. I wonder why.

"Bernie Sanders, Ben Carson…have U.S. voters lost touch with reality?
ReplyDeleteGerald Caplan
Special to The Globe and Mail
Published Monday, Nov. 02, 2015 5:09PM EST
Yes, it’s true, I’m afraid. The U.S. is having its election in exactly a year. Now that’s a long campaign.
Be very afraid.
For years now, formidable The Nation columnist Eric Alterman has been describing big chunks of American life as “crazy.” Literally. Yet our cherished U.S. neighbours have actually become even more unhinged in recent months, as we’ve all witnessed. I mean, of course, both the presidential nomination races and the most recent spate of mass murders and the reaction to them by gun-rights nutters, including most politicians.
So just when it seemed American politics couldn’t get more meshuggah than Alterman has long described it, who emerges but Bernie Sanders, The Donald and Dr. Ben Carson?
Look, I love Bernie, he makes me stand up and cheer, but he’s a 74-year-old Jewish Democrat who’s too left wing for today’s NDP let alone for the U.S. Obviously he’s touched a nerve among young Americans and many Democrats, who embrace his idealism, his outspokenness, his refusal to play politics with every issue, the very fact that he’s not politics as usual. It’s the progressive equivalent of the Tea Party on the extreme right, but it has very distinct limits. I’ll be president before Bernie.
As for the two Republican front-runners, Trump and Carson, you need to know that Carson is much less raucous than Trump but hardly less of a crackpot. Everyone knows about Trump. Wait until you learn about Carson.
Ben Carson is like a character from a Horatio Alger story, emerging from a deeply dysfunctional poor family to become a medical specialist. His rise is even more impressive than Barack Obama’s, though of course the Doc has had God’s personal guidance, as he earnestly reports.
An extreme conservative Christian, Carson is a genuine screwball. He compares Obama’s America to Nazi Germany – “very much like Nazi Germany,” he emphasizes. He believes the universe was created in six days and that the end of days is nigh. So who needs an election or a president anyway?
Here’s more Ben Carson wit and wisdom:
He’s a pro-gun fanatic who makes the National Rifle Association look like bleeding-heart liberals. He told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer that “the likelihood of Hitler being able to accomplish his goals would have been greatly diminished if the people had been armed.”
He would not support a Muslim for president.
He’s convinced Obamacare was the “worst thing” to happen to the U.S. since slavery. Wait until he finds out about Canadian health care. He’ll invade! He says being gay is a choice because “a lot of people … go into prison straight, and when they come out they’re gay.”
He calls progressives “racist” because “They don’t believe that if you are black you have the ability to be an independent thinker.”
Here’s what’s most alarming. It’s well known that the Republican party has been captured by the inmates of the asylum. But some Trump and Carson beliefs are shared by tens of millions of seemingly normal Americans, and not just screwball Republicans.
Over the past few years, for example, various surveys have found that 47 per cent of Americans believe Obama resents America’s heritage – presumably the Constitution and Declaration of Independence – and 45 per cent believe he’s the enemy within.
The surveys also reveal 41 per cent think Obama wants to use an economic or terrorist event as an excuse to take dictatorial powers. One-third believe global warming is a hoax.
You can’t make this stuff up.
American Republicans are even screwier and scarier than other Americans: Consider that 44 per cent of Republicans believe Muslims are working to implement harshly medieval sharia law in America.
A quarter of Republicans are sure the U.S. government is secretly staging mass shootings as an excuse to ban guns.
According to a Harris Poll, 38 per cent of Republicans believe Obama is following in the footsteps of Hitler, and 24 per cent believe he may actually be the Antichrist.
DeleteBut we’d better understand what this means. Carson and Trump are not cockamamie outliers. They’re like our own Rob Ford, much as we may hate to admit it. They represent a good portion of the American public, especially in their own party. That’s what’s so distressing.
Much of America has gone bonkers, and they’re getting progressively more unreasonable, as each subsequent election demonstrates. Who’d have thought more reckless candidates than Sarah Palin even existed?
In fact, Dr. Ben Carson’s bizarre droppings would actually be embraced as simple common sense by this cashew coalition.
But so does The Donald represent a large slice of the population, as a new biography makes clear. Michael D’Antonio’s Never Enough: Donald Trump and the Pursuit of Success, reminds us that for many Americans Trump is not a nutcase at all but a fabulous success story. “In his wealth and fame,” writes D’Antonio, “he is truly a man of our time, the ultimate expression of certain aspects of the American spirit.”
Now, I bow to no one in my admiration for certain aspects of the American character. But what’s made Ben Carson and Donald Trump the favorite presidential candidates of American Republicans are precisely what terrifies sane people: their outlandish excesses, their irrationality, their sheer ignorance, their bigotry.
Many Americans don’t recognize their country anymore – a black president, too many visible minority immigrants, no longer the sole superpower, a country on the decline and taking many white Americans with them, or so they fear. So they turn to crazy policies, crazy ideas, crazy men.
For these people, Carson and Trump are both proof the American Dream still works. Indeed, they love the idea that Ben Carson is the kind of conservative black man – the anti-Obama – they can vote for.
But where does that leave the world? Would you want either man being the most powerful person in the world?
Don’t bet it can’t happen. Hillary Clinton remains the closest thing to a sane person who might become the next president. Yet she’s extremely vulnerable – even to a Trump or Carson. It’s going to be harrowingly close.
Be very afraid."

DeleteNo you are wrong
No you are wrong. You take literally and seriously everything any adversary of Israel utters, yet, you refuse to take Bibi at his word. He has bragged about how he singlehandedly scuttled the Oslo Accords. Within the last year or so, he has gone on record saying there is no chance of negotiating a two-state solution in the forseeable future.
Bibi has frozen settlement and offered lands..
The offers died on the vine.
As for halting settlements, he does it when he is forced to do it because of outside pressure. As for offers of land, he offers to 'swap' land, often settlement land for some land off in the Negev. However, it gets worse.
Bibi 'talks' a lot. He has recently proposed renewed talks with the Palestinians. Anyone who actually believes he is serious is nutz. Bibi has never put an offer on a piece of paper. He has never identified Israel's proposed final borders much less put the information on paper. He talks in generalities, something that costs him nothing, and even the generalities are coupled with red lines no Palestinian or Arab could agree to, Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, continued Israeli occupation of the Jordan valley, a demand that Israel be recognized as a Jewish state, a disavowal of ROR. Anyone who thinks that is a serious offer is nutz. There is no wonder these 'offers' died on the vine.
Maybe you should look at the palestinians with the same level of scrutiny, you might learn something..
There is only one point I am aware of where the Israelis were willing to actually to make a 'specific' proposal that addressed the various 'key issues' and that was by Olmert. But even then it was merely in a verbal one-on-one with Abbas. Nothing offered was actually put down on a piece of paper. All the rest have been kabuki. Even the Oslo Accords simply established a road map to get to the point of finally getting to the final negotiations. Most of the time all they have negotiated on was process, negotiating on how to negotiate.
That being said, even though Olmert offered merely a token resolution to the ROR issue (10,000 Palestinians) and demanded about 6.7% of the West Bank (the Jewish Virtual Library states that current WB settlements only take up about 1.7%), it still addressed most of the key issues with what I thought was a reasonable compromise and I think Abbas should have called him on the offer, tried to negotiate a better deal on ROR and the percentage of land, and pushed for a settlement. I said Peres was too cautious in 1996. Abbas was also too weak and too cautious in 2006. It was the one point where the two sides were somewhat even. Olmert was an embattled PM and Abbas should have recognized that.
Of course there s no guarantee anything would have gotten done. There is no guarantee Olmert could have gotten the deal approved by the Knesset. In fact, it would have been a miracle of he did. Likewise, Abbas would have to overcome opposition from other Arab states (Jordan and Egypt) and from his own people. But you get no kudos for playing it safe.
.
.
DeleteAnd as we all know, Olmert was booted by Bibi and that was that.
.
Olmert?

There will be war.
The only choice you and your pals offer Israelis or Jews? Surrender or die.
So no thanks Mr Quirk....
The Israelis (and Jews) of this planet do not accept your terms.
And if the Palestinians want to continue to stab, shoot rockets, planet IEDs, decapitate our children?
They will die.
Just as America will travel 6000 miles to bomb ISIS? Israel will travel 6 miles to do the same.

ObamaCare’s death spiral, stage one: Denial

For the press, the debate over ObamaCare is over. There may be a few proverbial Japanese soldiers wandering on isolated islands yammering on about the failure of ObamaCare, but word will eventually filter down to them, too.
This assumption is so deeply embedded that it is impervious to new evidence that ObamaCare is an unwieldy contraption that is sputtering badly. Yes, ObamaCare has covered more people and has especially benefited those with pre-existing conditions (to be credible, Republican replacement plans have to do these things, as well), but the program is so poorly designed that, surely, even a new Democratic president will want to revisit it to try to make it more workable.
Enrollment is falling short. The Obama administration projects that it will have roughly 10 million people on the state and federal exchanges by the end of next year, a staggering climb-down from prior expectations. The Congressional Budget Office had predicted that there would be roughly 20 million enrollees. If the administration is to be believed, enrollment will only increase about another million next year from its current 9 million and only sign up about a quarter of the eligible uninsured.
Premiums are rising. Not everywhere, but steeply in some states. Indiana is down 12 percent, but Minnesota is up 50 percent. Health care expert Robert Laszewski points out that it’s the insurers with the highest enrollment and therefore the best information about actual enrollees that have tended to request the biggest increases — a sign that they don’t like what they’re seeing in their data.
Relatedly, the economics are shaky.................

Is he some kind of Rappachcini, raising poisonous daughters ?
Rappaccini's Daughter" is a short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne published in the 1844 collection Mosses from an Old Manse. It is about Giacomo Rappaccini, a medical researcher in medieval Padua who grows a garden of poisonous plants. He brings up his daughter to tend the plants, and she becomes resistant to the poisons, but in the process she herself becomes poisonous to others. The traditional story of a poisonous maiden has been traced back to India, and Hawthorne's version has been adopted in contemporary works.

Maybe I’m just being naive, but if it were up to me, reports on politicians’ pronouncements would provide some context about things those politicians have said in the past – just to help the readers, who probably don’t have dossiers ready to hand.
So, for example, if The Hill is going to report Sen. John Barrasso’s assertion that Obamacare may collapse this year, it would be a service to readers to note that Sen. Barrasso was one of the people claiming that more people would lose coverage than gain it under the Affordable Care Act – and who, when enrollments surged, declared that the administration was cooking the books.
But then again, context has a well-known liberal bias.
PK
If we report on Rufus, and his prediction that Iraq would be ISIS free by the end of Obama's Second Term, I agree we should also report that Rufus once was reporting the date as July 4th 2015, and taking bets on the issue, which was moved to Memorial Day.
DeleteWe should also report that Rufus does not pay his Internet gambling debts.
It gives us a little background of the man, and a peek into his character.

DeleteObamacare Co-Op Failures
WASHINGTON — The financial failure of more than half the nonprofit health insurance companies created under the Affordable Care Act has handed Republicans a new weapon in their campaign against the health law, thrown the Obama administration on the defensive once again and left more than a half-million consumers in the cold.

“Any start-up faces the inherent risks of building a business from the ground up,” Dr. Mandy Cohen, the chief operating officer at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, told Congress on Tuesday at a contentious hearing of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health. “As with any new set of business ventures, some co-ops have succeeded while others have encountered more challenges.”

So far, 12 of the 23 nonprofit insurance plans created as a result of President Obama’s signature domestic achievement have announced — voluntarily or under pressure from federal and state regulators — that they will not offer coverage next year. The most recent announcement came on Tuesday, just hours before the House hearing, when Consumers Mutual Insurance of Michigan posted a notice on its website saying it will not sell health plans in 2016 on the insurance marketplace.
New Yorkers were dismayed to receive notices over the weekend saying insurance policies from their co-op, Health Republic Insurance of New York, “will not be available after Nov. 30.” With more than 155,000 members, the New York insurer was the largest of the co-ops...

DeleteCo-Op Losses
Many co-ops have experienced troubling financial losses in their short lives. In fact, the Colorado co-op had losses totaling $23 million last year.
The co-op was hoping for financial relief through the “risk corridor” program created by Obamacare. In theory, this program allows insurance companies to cover high risk individuals and keeps premiums low by taking funds from more successful providers and giving them to less successful providers.
In reality, there are not enough insurance providers making money under Obamacare. Providers had requested $2.87 billion in payments for 2014 but found that they would only be receiving $362 million, just 12.6 percent.
Failed co-ops nationwide have now caused 510,000 individuals to lose health insurance.
It seems certain that more co-ops will soon fail, once again displacing thousands and costing taxpayers millions. Tough questions need to be asked of the hands off approach taken by CMS, and its administrator Andy Slavitt.

U.S. Light Vehicle Sales at 18.1 million annual rate in October

Based on a WardsAuto estimate, light vehicle sales were at a 18.13 million SAAR in October. That is up almost 10% from October 2014, and up slightly from the 18.1 million annual sales rate last month.
This was the second consecutive month over 18 million.
This graph shows the historical light vehicle sales from the BEA (blue) and an estimate for October (red, light vehicle sales of 18.13 million SAAR from WardsAuto).
This was above the consensus forecast of 17.7 million SAAR (seasonally adjusted annual rate).

ISRAELIA, WELFARE QUEEN OF THE DESERT
ReplyDeleteWASHINGTON, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Israel is reportedly seeking fighter aircraft, tankers, transports and financial assistance in a new security aid package from the United States.
Israeli news organization Ynet News reports the requested items were recently presented during closed-door meetings by senior officials of both countries and has been discussed by Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon and U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter.
It is expected to be on the agenda of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he visits Washington later this month.
Washington, under a special 10-year aid package, has granted Israel about $3 billion annually in military assistance but that arrangement is due to expire in 2017. Negotiations on a new package were temporarily suspended by Israel amid tension with the United States over U.S. support for a nuclear deal between Iran and the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council plus Germany.
The Israeli shopping list, the news site said, includes a new squadron of F-15 fighters, tankers, funding for Israel's Arrow 3 missile program and tilt-rotor Osprey transports.
No other details, however, were given in the report.

ReplyDeleteChalabi Ran the Little Con on Iraq, But Bush Ran the Bigger One
The Bush administration wasn’t tricked into invading by the schmoozer who died Tuesday. Instead, he fed their hubris about how easy a war would be.
PARIS — Ahmed Chalabi, the Iraqi mathematician, banker, schmoozer, spy and source of dubious intelligence provided to journalists and politicians alike, died today of an apparent heart attack in Baghdad at the age of 71. And at least one breaking news headline called him “the man who drove the U.S. to war in Iraq.”
That’s a common, and perhaps convenient, perception. But for my part, as someone who first met Chalabi 30 years ago, and stayed in close touch with him up to and through the first years of the disastrous American occupation of his homeland, I think the blame is misplaced.
George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and crew were hellbent on war with Saddam Hussein, and if they hadn’t had Chalabi supplying grist to their mill, they’d have found someone else. Their attachment to fantasies was infinitely greater than their attachment to facts, and, believing in American omnipotence, they wanted to make their dream of an utterly overhauled Middle East a reality. Chalabi played to their delusions and prejudices, but he didn’t create them...

Israeli- Druze Alliance Defends Israel Against Apartheid Accusations: ‘We Are a Living Example of How Empty These Claims Are’
Members of Israel’s Druze community on Monday slammed all those who accuse Israel of being an “apartheid state” that discriminates against its minorities.
This defense of the Jewish state was made by a visiting delegation of Israeli Druze during a conference held in New York this week at the office of the World Jewish Congress. Tahani Sheikh, a member of the community who recently finished her medical studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and is pursuing a career as a neurologist, said that because the Druze community is so well-integrated into Israeli society, “We are a living example of how empty such claims [as apartheid] are.”
She said a look at Israel’s academic institutions — where Arabs make up a large percentage of the student body — is enough to grasp how false the accusations are. She cited figures showing that 50 percent of the students at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology and more than 80 percent of Tel Aviv University’s dental school are Arabs.
These facts, she said, prove wrong those who say that “Israel is against minorities or not giving them equal rights.”
Another Israeli-Druze, Shuki Hasson, who formerly headed the IDF’s foreign relations department, expressed a similar sentiment. He urged Israel detractors to “define apartheid and then take that definition and try to apply it to what’s going on in Israel.” He said none of the definitions of apartheid jibe with the current living situation in the Jewish state.
Hasson asserted that “every human being, regardless of religion or background,” can move freely in Israel. He said the same applies to Palestinians, explaining that though they are subject to certain restrictions — due to the current security situation — they can still can move inside and out of the Jewish state as they please.
Another member of the community, Amir Halabi — who served in the IDF Paratroopers Brigade and is now a doctor — said that Palestinians who accuse Israel of apartheid need to understand why their current living situation is the way it is. He said it’s important to compare the condition of minorities inside Israel with that of the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
“When you describe to people who think that the checkpoints and the [separation] wall was built, because Israel wanted to become an apartheid state, that without these checkpoints and without this wall, buses and restaurants will explode in Tel Aviv, immediately they start to think about it differently.”
Sheikh, Hasson and Halabi — some of the delegates from the NGO Israeli Druze Alliance — are on a US speaking tour to raise awareness about their community’s role in Israel, and their contributions to the country, the IDF and the stability of the region.

Iranian officials justify soldier deaths in Syria
When Russian airstrikes began Sept. 30 against Syrian armed opposition fighters, they were reportedly accompanied by Syrian troops and Iranian advisers on the ground. However, after more than a dozen Iranian soldiers died in less than a month, including the highest-ranking Iranian general to be killed in the 4½-year-old civil war, Iranian authorities and media have been put in the position of explaining the death toll.

Could the destroyed Russian plane be jihadi payback?
By Shoshana Bryen
It could have been a coincidence. A Russian airbus with 224 people – mainly tourists – flying from Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt to St. Petersburg, Russia could simply have come apart in midair, killing all aboard. It would have been one heck of a coincidence, though, considering the players who would have wanted it to disintegrate and the constellation of agendas that would be advanced by a well-placed bomb.
It is almost impossible that the plane was hit from the ground. It was flying too high for a shoulder-fired missile. Although it isn't clear whether there are mobile missile launchers in Sinai, assume for a moment that one or more exist. The missile would have to have been programmed – it needs radar and target designation – and therefore it needs a) to know the flight path of a particular plane if it plans to hit a particular plane and b) an operator with the right skills. (The list of requirements for a successful takedown of an airliner is what leads some to believe that it was a Russian operator in Ukraine who fired on Malaysian Air Flight 17 a year ago.)
A bomb inside the plane, however, would account for the widespread wreckage.
ISIS? ISIS claimed first to have shot the plane down and later (after it became clear that it probably hadn't actually been shot down) claimed responsibility instead for "destroying" it without specifying how. ISIS by itself is a fairly long shot; it is known to be operating in Sinai, but not in the southern part near Sharm el-Sheikh.
Posit, then, cooperation between ISIS and Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood, two Sunni jihadist organizations operating both in Egypt and in Syria. While ISIS's prime target would be Russia, the Brotherhood's would be Egypt.
The Brotherhood was born in Egypt and is entrenched among the population. President al-Sisi has been waging a brutal war against it, believing that the Brotherhood is to Egypt as the Taliban is to Afghanistan – an indigenous jihadist organization that perhaps cannot be weeded out but must be shackled, stomped, imprisoned, and otherwise prevented from wreaking havoc on the state. President Mubarak was horrified when the Obama administration insisted that MB figures attend the president's Cairo University speech in 2009 and later met Brotherhood figures in the White House.
Downing a plane filled with civilians could decimate Egypt's tourist industry – one of the mainstays of the economy. Already suffering from the perception that Egypt is unsafe for tourism (although the government has claimed otherwise), Egypt may find that this disaster presents an unfixable economic reality.
DeleteConsidering ISIS's position, Vladimir Putin declared war on the organization in Syria, and a declaration of war by Russia is qualitatively different from an American "red line." True, Putin is expending effort clearing non-ISIS rebels from territory around Aleppo to ensure that the Assad government can control it, but Russian planes have struck ISIS training camps and other installations as well.
Russia has two goals in Syria:
To protect a government in Damascus that ensures Russian control of naval base at Latakia.
To strike a blow at Sunni jihadists who threaten Russian interests.
Putin has no particular love for Shiite Iran, Assad, Alawites, or Hezb'allah – his primary allies in Syria. But he has a passionate hatred for Sunni jihadists, particularly Chechens, some of whom are fighting with ISIS and who he believes will return to Russia and restart the wars that he so brutally extinguished. The secular Assad regime is essential in his view to keeping the lid on Sunni jihad.
One of the problems with the Russian approach to Sunni jihadists is that carpet-bombing tends to make more, rather than fewer, of them.
Russia, long a target of Chechen irredentists, is now also a target of ISIS.
A Muslim Brotherhood-ISIS joint operation would serve the primary interests of both.
A boost to the fortunes of the Muslim Brotherhood inside Egypt.
A boost to ISIS, which proves it can operate outside the Syria/Iraq border area and that it can operate against a major power.
A blow to the authority of the al-Sisi government, as it fails to protect international interests in Egypt.
A financial blow to Egypt's economy that may not be covered by support payments from the Saudis and the Gulf Arab States.
A blow to Putin's standing at home as he fails to protect Russian civilians.
A blow to Putin's desire to deliver a crushing blow to ISIS and other Sunni jihadists, as they, instead, deliver one to Russia.
The details of the demise of Kogalymavia Flight 9268 will become clearer as more of the wreckage is reclaimed. But the winners and losers of the fight for the narrative are clear: jihadi terrorists scored one over Russia and Egypt.

(Francesco Bongiorni for The Washington Post)
By Meeri Kim November 2
On Nov. 5, 2013, Esmé Weijun Wang came to the remarkable conclusion that she was dead.
In the weeks prior to this, she had begun to feel increasingly fractured — like being scatterbrained, but to such an extreme that she felt her sense of reality was fraying at the edges. She had started to lose her grip on who she was and on the world around her. Desperate to fend off what appeared to be early signs of psychosis, Wang went into a soul-searching and organizational frenzy. She read a self-help book that was supposed to help people discover their core beliefs and desires; she ordered and scribbled in five 2014 datebook planners, reorganized her work space and found herself questioning her role as a writer.
[At first, this man thought he had food poisoning. It turned out to be something far worse.]
Then one morning, Wang woke her husband before sunrise with an incredible sense of wonder and tears of joy to tell him it all made sense to her now: She had actually died a month before, although at the time she had been told she merely fainted. (During a flight home to San Francisco from London, Wang had drifted into and out of consciousness for four hours. Afterward, doctors were unable to find a cause for this episode.)
“I was convinced that I had died on that flight, and I was in the afterlife and hadn’t realized it until that moment,” said Wang, now 32, who was convinced her husband and their dog Daphne were dead as well. “That was the beginning of when I was convinced that I was dead. But I wasn’t upset about it, because I thought that I could do things [in my life] over and do them better.”
Her husband assured her that she — and he — were very much alive, an assertion she dismissed. But as the days passed, her bliss turned into total despair. She lost all desire to work, talk or eat — because what’s the point when you’re already dead?
[A group of middle-aged whites in the U.S. is dying at a startling rate]
For almost two months, Wang suffered from Cotard’s syndrome, in which patients think they are dead or somehow nonexistent. Any attempts to point out evidence to the contrary — they are talking, walking around, using the bathroom — are explained away. French neurologist Jules Cotard first described the syndrome in the 1800s as a type of depression characterized by anxious melancholia and delusions about one’s own body. In a case report published in 1880, Cotard wrote of a 43-year-old woman who “affirms she has no brain, no nerves, no chest, no stomach, no intestines . . . only skin and bones of a decomposing body.”
DeleteA matter of misdiagnosis?
Although the condition is not classified as a separate disorder in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, there have been plenty of anecdotal accounts of what has been sensationalized as “walking corpse syndrome” and “life as a zombie.” Doctors who treat the condition say Cotard’s syndrome is a real illness, with patients believing they are dead and, like Wang, feeling extremely depressed, anxious and suicidal.
“Patients truly experience all kinds of suffering,” said an expert in the syndrome, psychiatrist Jesús Ramírez-Bermúdez at the National Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery of Mexico.
[Prestigious medical journals rejected stunning study on deaths among middle-aged whites]
When he was a medical student working in a psychiatric hospital more than two decades ago, Ramírez-Bermúdez says, he saw patients who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia after they had said that they were already dead or that their bodies were disappearing. But after doing some research and speaking with other physicians, he came to the conclusion that they instead had Cotard’s. Since then, he has treated 14 patients with the condition, using both psychotherapy and medication.
One of his first cases was a man who claimed he was dead but also had delusions of having a twin brother who was alive. The patient frequently attempted suicide, once throwing himself out of a moving car.
“He would say that he had thrown himself out of the car because he thought that he was trapped in an eternity in which things were not real, and he was not real,” Ramírez-Bermúdez said. “He also felt that perhaps by dying [again] he would recover his former self.”
As for Wang, she found herself in a place that looked just like her old life but evoked no emotion in her, which led to anxiety, fear and agitation. She frequently descended into catatonic psychosis, a condition marked by periods of not being able to move, interspersed with overactive movement.
Delete“I began to believe I was in perdition, or some kind of hell,” said Wang, who wrote an essay, “Perdition Days,” during and after the experience. “I was trying to figure out what I had done wrong, what had condemned me to this afterlife that looked like my real life before I died but wasn’t real — that was the torment of it. I kind of described it once as feeling like I was on fire inside.”
Debate over delusions
What causes Cotard’s syndrome and other delusions is a matter of debate. Delusions are seen in association with a wide range of neuropsychological conditions including dementia, schizophrenia, Parkinson’s disease and brain injury — and just as diverse are the nature of the delusional beliefs.
For example, when someone with self-misidentification looks at his reflection, he believes the person in the mirror is some stranger who looks just like him.
One of the better-studied delusions is Capgras syndrome, the belief that a spouse, family member or friend has been replaced by an identical-looking impostor.
What could cause such odd yet specific delusions? The leading theory suggests that two types of brain impairment are involved. The first alters the patient’s normal functioning — say, brain damage that prevents the normal processing of emotions when looking at familiar faces. The second, thought to be the same as in any delusional belief, is responsible for the patient’s lack of reasoning. It is what encourages the patient to hold on so tightly to his outlandish beliefs.
[At times, he thought his car was filled with tigers and squirrels had invaded his bed. What was happening?]
In stark contrast to healthy people, those with Capgras syndrome have been found to feel nothing when shown photos of their loved ones — a result of the first impairment. A person with Capgras thinks these people aren’t who they say they are and must be impostors. But for a person with Capgras to keep believing this no matter how bizarre it may sound, experts say, there must be some sort of damage in the right dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex, an area of the brain that deals with reasoning — this is the second impairment.
“You have one impairment that prompts the belief that, for example, this isn’t your wife. The second impairment is of your normal ability to evaluate beliefs, and accept or reject them,” said Max Coltheart, an emeritus professor of cognitive science at Macquarie University in Australia and a pioneer in the two-impairment theory. “When it comes to Capgras delusion, there are a number of cases in the literature in which the patient has murdered people who challenged the delusion. One boy thought his father was a robot and beheaded him to find the microchips.”
Lack of emotional response
The two-factor theory has been much less explored in Cotard’s syndrome, but Coltheart expects it would hold.
For Cotard’s patients, he thinks the first factor could be a failure to react emotionally to anything, not just familiar faces. Such things as loud noises, disturbing imagery or sudden touches that would typically elicit an emotional response would have no effect. In such cases, people may assume they are dead or no longer exist.

ReplyDeleteGallup's U.S. Job Creation Index averaged plus 32 in October, the sixth month in a row in which the index has held at this level. This is the highest index score since Gallup began measuring employees' perceptions of job creation at their workplaces in 2008.
When Gallup began measuring job creation in January 2008, the index measured a healthy plus 26. But it quickly fell, including substantial drops in the fourth quarter of 2008 after the start of the financial crisis. The index hit a nadir of minus 5 in early 2009, and has slowly rebounded since.
In October, 43 percent of workers said their employer was hiring workers and expanding the size of its workforce, and 11 percent said their employer was letting people go and reducing the size of its workforce, resulting in the index score of plus 32. Forty percent of workers say their employer is "not changing" the size of its workforce. These percentages have been steady for the last several months. Since April, a higher percentage of Americans have said their employer is "hiring" than have said the size of their workforce is "not changing."
No regions had significant changes in perceptions of hiring in October compared with September. Net hiring continues to be lowest in the East, at plus 28, as has generally been the case since 2013. Hiring perceptions were similar in the Midwest (plus 34), South (plus 33) and West (plus 33). Although steady between September and October, hiring in the Midwest has dropped from plus 36 in August, which tied the highest score recorded for any region since Gallup began tracking this metric.
Hiring perceptions were steady in both the private sector and among government workers. Net job creation measured plus 34 among nongovernment workers, where the majority of the country is employed, and plus 27 among government workers.
The current plus 32 index comes at a time when unemployment remains low, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics reporting 5.1 percent unemployment. This is not as good as the rates near 4.0 percent in 1999 and 2000, but it is one of the better rates in recent times. Even looking at the states with the highest rates of job creation -- such as North Dakota -- their indexes in 2014 were only slightly higher than the current score for the country as a whole. One future driver of expanded job creation could be more entrepreneurial activity and new business startups, as the number of new businesses being started recently is less than the number that are closing, according to the Brookings Institute. All in all, it is a positive sign that job creation continues at this high point, but it does invite speculation about just how much higher the index can climb.

http://news.yahoo.com/egyptian-flooding-drowns-gazas-tunnel-business-123847259.html
Egyptian flooding drowns Gaza's tunnel business
"but a network of Palestinian tunnels running under the frontier town of Rafah is now water-logged, destroyed by Cairo to sever what it says is a weapons smuggling route out of Gaza for Islamist insurgents in Egypt's Sinai desert."
LOL
"We respect our neighbors, we love Egypt, but our neighbors are making our life harder," he said in his one-storey unfinished cinder block house, around which water seeps and cracks in the ground are growing wider.
"Egypt's pumping of salt water from the nearby Mediterranean into the tunnels is not only creating a mess as it rises to the surface. Palestinian officials say it is also contaminating water supplies as well as threatening to wreck farmland and spread disease."
LOL
"Local residents say that at the peak of the tunnel business, after Hamas Islamists seized the Gaza Strip in 2007 nearly 2,500 underground passages snaked under the border with Egypt... In 2008-10, some tunnel owners were said to have become dollar millionaires as they shifted everything from Hummer vehicles and washing machines to cows and sheep through the underground system. Hamas imposed a tax on shipments.
At one point an estimated 22,000 Palestinians worked in the tunnel "industry". However, it shrank markedly in 2010 after Israel, under international pressure to ease restrictions on commercial imports into Gaza, allowed more goods in through its overland crossings."
So Israel helped the Palestinian people hurt the smugglers... LOL
Now it gets funnier than shit.....
"Then this September, battling an insurgency in northern Sinai, Egypt decided to shut down the tunnels once and for all. Determined to halt what it said was an arms flow in the opposite direction, from Gaza to the militants, it cleared the area on its side of the border and began pumping salt water into the underground maze, collapsing the land."
LOL Egypt, the arab world's LARGEST nation pumping SALT water to flood the illegal tunnels...
and now for the cherry on top:
Tunnel-builders said Egypt that over the course of a few weeks had done more damage to the network, which once accounted for an estimated 30 percent of Gaza's imports, than Israeli bombing had caused over the past two decades."
LOL now that is funny... It bears repeating..
"Egypt that over the course of a few weeks had done more damage to the network, which once accounted for an estimated 30 percent of Gaza's imports, than Israeli bombing had caused over the past two decades."
LOL
Truth is funnier than fiction...
But still it gets better and better.
" What is left is an environmental mess, residents and local officials said, with the sea water polluting underground drinking reserves. The overflow has reached streets and homes within 100 meters (yards) of the border fence. Vast puddles and mud are everywhere."
Yep it's not Israel causing a water shortage in Gaza... It's Hamas and Egypt's response to HAMAS's EXPORTING of weapons and fighters into the Sinai..
LOL
So there is ONE tiny story that refutes Deuce's 215x against the Jewish state...
LOL
Hawaii Makes Another Big Move Toward 100 Percent Renewable Energy
ReplyDeleteFrom the behemoths on down, utility-scale solar is having a moment.
By the end of this year, 37 percent of the electricity generated on the Hawaiian Island of Kauai will come from a mix of renewable resources, including solar, hydropower and biomass.
The recent completion of the state's largest solar array is a big help toward that goal, as well as toward the aggressive statewide goal of 100 percent renewable energy by 2045.
Located in the small town of Anahola, along the island's eastern coast, the 12-megawatt, $54 million facility is 60 acres -- the size of about 45 football fields -- and has 59,000 solar panels.
Kauai Island Utility Cooperative says it will replace 1.7 million gallons of imported oil per year and generate 20 percent of Kauai’s daytime energy needs -- enough to power 4,000 homes.
While this is a big step for the Aloha state -- as well as Kauai's public utility co-op, the only utility in the state not owned by Hawaiian Electric Industries -- the Anahola facility pales in comparison to the country's largest solar power plants.
Take California's Solar Star projects -- the largest photovoltaic power plant on the planet. Completed this past June, this 579-megawatt monster in Antelope Valley, California, has more than 1.7 million solar modules and delivers enough electricity to power approximately 255,000 homes.
Upon its completion, Green Tech Media heralded it as a sign that "the utility-scale solar business is alive and well."
Indeed, from the behemoths like Solar Star to the community-based efforts like Kauai's Anahola facility, utility-scale solar is making its mark across the country.
In 2014, the utility photovoltaic sector installed 3,939 megawatts -- up 38 percent from 2013, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association.
Below, take a loot at the five biggest solar power plants (photovoltaic and concentrated solar thermal) in the U.S.

TEHRAN — American flags and effigies of President Barack Obama were set ablaze on Wednesday as thousands gathered to mark the anniversary of the 1979 takeover of the Iranian capital's U.S. Embassy.
New and large anti-U.S. propaganda posters — including one mocking the raising of the American flag at Iwo Jima — were spotted in Tehran.

An NBC News reporter estimated the crowds at the demonstration numbered in the thousands.
"We are here to say, 'down with the USA,'" a 59-year-old teacher who gave his name as Abdolah said. "We will never.. let to open this embassy again. It was not embassy — it was a place for spies."

Highlights
ReplyDeleteISM's non-manufacturing index continues its searing pace, rising nearly 2-1/2 points to a much higher-than-expected 59.1 which exceeds Econoday's high-end forecast by more than 1-1/2 points. Orders are robust with new orders up more than 5 points to 62.0 and backlogs unchanged at 54.5 which is very strong for this reading. Export orders are also strong, up 2 points to 54.5 and underscoring the strength of the nation's services surplus as seen in this morning international trade report. But the highlight of the report, ahead of Friday's employment data, is a nearly 1 point rise in the employment index to 59.2 which is one of the very strongest readings in the history of the report.

ReplyDeleteI guess that old chant from Rufus about how Iran has never invaded another nation or fought a war outside her borders for 200 years is crap...
Fourth Iranian Revolutionary Guards Commander Said Killed In Syria
ran's Fars news agency is reporting that a senior officer in Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards was killed in Syria, the fourth Iranian commander to die there in the last month.
Colonel Mostafa Ezzatollah Soleimani died during an "advisory mission" near the northern Syrian city of Aleppo, Fars said on November 3.
Since last week, Iranian media have announced the deaths of five Iranians in Syria, bringing the total killed there to 20 since October 9.
Among those have been four Revolutionary Guards commanders, including General Hossein Hamedani, a veteran of the Iran-Iraq war, who was killed by the Islamic State group near Aleppo.
Iran supports the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and while it doesn't officially send troops to Syria, it has deployed military "advisors" to the war-torn country for years while providing the government with military, financial, and political backing.

Daniel Greenfield is an excellent writer and I love the guy but here I don't know.....my idea has been that ISIS arose when we took the troops out too soon, he seems to be saying it was all in the cards anyway.
But notice what true assholes all these people are......makes one ashamed to be human.
The only society out there that is coherent is Israel. I don't think Israel will do these things to one another. Therefore I think Israel will be around - I certainly hope so - after all this chaos is a dim memory.
All these others.....almost Egypt too....but for the grace of Sisi....all in the process of committing suicide......and seeming to love it.
Read this long article, you will come away shaken.

I think my Niece is right when she said:
"The ones in the Middle East are the worst, Uncle Bob."
If there are worse than these it's time for the Lord to put an end to it, someway or other...another flood being out, maybe the Lord's creativity can send some precision guided asteroids......saving Israel and the rest of us too from this true madness.

This new paper by Angus Deaton and Anne Case on mortality among middle-aged whites has been getting a lot of attention, and rightly so. As a number of people have pointed out, the closest parallel to America’s rising death rates — driven by poisonings, suicide, and chronic liver diseases — is the collapse in Russian life expectancy after the fall of Communism. (No, we’re not doing as badly as that, but still.) What the data look like is a society gripped by despair, with a surge of unhealthy behaviors and an epidemic of drugs, very much including alcohol.
This picture goes along with declining labor force participation and other indicators of social unraveling. Something terrible is happening to white American society. And it’s a uniquely American phenomenon; you don’t see anything like it in Europe, which means that it’s not about a demoralizing welfare state or any of the other myths so popular in our political discourse.
There’s a lot to be said, or at any rate suggested, about the politics of this disaster. But I’ll come back to that some other time. For now, the thing to understand, to say it again, is that something terrible is happening to our country — and it’s not about Those People, it’s about the white majority.

DeleteMinority women constitute only about 13% of the female population (age 15-44) in the United States, but they underwent approximately 36% of the abortions.
According to the Alan Guttmacher Institute, black women are more than 5 times as likely as white women to have an abortion
On average, 1,876 black babies are aborted every day in the United States.
This incidence of abortion has resulted in a tremendous loss of life. It has been estimated that since 1973 Black women have had about 16 million abortions. Michael Novak had calculated "Since the number of current living Blacks (in the U.S.) is 36 million, the missing 16 million represents an enormous loss, for without abortion, America's Black community would now number 52 million persons. It would be 36 percent larger than it is. Abortion has swept through the Black community like a scythe, cutting down every fourth member."
A highly significant 1993 Howard University study showed that African American women over age 50 were 4.7 times more likely to get breast cancer if they had had any abortions compared to women who had not had any abortions.

So I look at Business Insider and see that Stanley Druckenmiller is issuing dire warnings that terrible things will happen unless the Fed hikes rates now now now. I guess this is supposed to be news. But wait; haven’t I heard this before? Why, yes: two and half years ago he warned that a crash worse than 2008 was coming unless we slash Social Security now now now.
Basically, Druckenmiller has been warning that disaster looms ever since he closed Duquesne Capital five years ago. And his predictions of doom always involve soaring interest rates. Why?
Well, when Druckenmiller retired he gave as his reason a bad string of decisions (my emphasis):
“I felt I missed a lot of opportunities in 2008 and 2009, and a huge move in bonds this year,” he said during the interview in his New York office on 57th Street overlooking Central Park.
Indeed, he was evidently blindsided by the plunge in interest rates that took place just before he bowed out:
If his later statements are any guide, he may well have been betting on soaring rather than plunging rates. And one way to look at those later statements is that they’re about insisting that he was right all along, but the market just hasn’t realized it yet.
OK, at this point someone will point out that Druckenmiller has made billions, and I haven’t. Indeed; in normal times Druckenmiller could doubtless run circles around me in terms of outguessing the market. But here’s the thing: the post-2008 period has been one in which the instincts of master traders, developed in a very different era, have been a poor guide to events. What has worked, instead, is Macroeconomics 101, which is why people like me — or, if you really dislike yours truly, Ben Bernanke — have done pretty well. (I was at a book party a couple of months back, and was accosted by one very famous investor who said, bitterly, “Well, so far the markets agree with you.”)
And one way to see these pronouncements of doom from hedge fund guys is that they are talking their book, literally or figuratively; they lost money by shorting bonds, and are looking for justification.

ReplyDeleteGermany Will Reach 33% Renewable Electricity This Year
ReplyDeleteNovember 4th, 2015 by Roy L Hales
Originally published on the ECOreport
On July 25, 2015, Germany obtained 78% of its electricity from renewable sources. That was a new record, albeit for a single day. Up until now, the European leader has not produced more than 27% green energy in a year. According to a joint press release from the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden – Württemberg ( ZSW ) and the German Association of Energy and Water Industries ( BDEW ), Germany will reach 33% renewable electricity this year
A Preliminary Estimate
Germany is expected to produce around 193 billion kilowatt hours (billion kWh) of electricity from solar, wind and other renewable sources. That’s about one fifth more than the 161 billion kWh, or 27% of gross electricity consumption, in 2014.
Though this is a preliminary estimate, on 31 October 2015 wind energy had already supplied 47% more electricity (63 billion kWh) than during the same time period in 2014.
Though the late autumn weather tends to be unpredictable, Germany’s solar sector has already provided as much electricity during that 10 month period (35 billion kWh) as the whole of 2014.
Renewables Continue To Grow In Importance
Regardless of the exact ratio come the end of the year, it has been made clear once again that renewable energy continues . . . . . .
