“There's a graveyard in northern France where all the dead boys from D-Day are buried. The white crosses reach from one horizon to the other. I remember looking it over and thinking it was a forest of graves. But the rows were like this, dizzying, diagonal, perfectly straight, so after all it wasn't a forest but an orchard of graves. Nothing to do with nature, unless you count human nature.” - Barbara Kingsolver

  1. Cannon to right of them,
    Cannon to left of them,
    Cannon in front of them
    Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
    Boldly they rode and well,
    Into the jaws of Death,
    Into the mouth of Hell

Here's a better article in the Telegraph. This experiment in Quantum Entanglement, at a distance of 11 miles yielded a speed at least 10,000 Times the Speed of Light.

How fast is thought? That could be spooky...mind over matter...

  3. Thought comes first.

    Then matter.

O well, never mind. It's no matter.

    1. :-) Spinoza was nearly assassinated on the steps of the synagogue from which he had been "excommunicated" for positing that G-d and Cosmos were identities. He could have taken a dualist approach, making the case that they were merely "images" of the same thing, viewed from different perspectives. But he did not, rejecting, in a sense, the possibility of something traveling at a trillion times the speed of light, while influencing every sub-sub-sub-atomic particle in the Universe. It cannot be faulted for lack of imagination; it was not until 1905 that humanity was given to understand the foundational significance of light to the universe; i.e. no light, no universe.

  4. My Niece knows all this down to her Hindu bones.

Now she is just trying to figure the chemistry of it all.

    She is wonderful.

  5. Although not yet technically possible, a necklace of gold atoms, one atom attached to another single atom, could be constructed to any length desired. For the sake of this exercise, say, one thousand miles.

This necklace would, both in the aggregate and in its single constituents, display all the properties associated with gold. Its electrical and heat conductivities would be identical to a block of gold. Indeed, it would be gold, as gold is defined and described in the Handbook of Chemistry and Physics.

It would, however, be invisible. Does that make it less real?

    …a thought…a photon…an atom…a soul…Hmm…

With what ingenuity shall Lester “What’s his name” be worked into this comment? I wait with antici… …PAY…tion.

“The Dresden atrocity, tremendously expensive and meticulously planned, was so meaningless, finally, that only one person on the entire planet got any benefit from it. I am that person. I wrote this book, which earned a lot of money for me and made my reputation, such as it is. One way or another, I got two or three dollars for every person killed. Some business I'm in.”

  7. Big Money And Obama

    Aletho News – August 18, 2010

“Barack Obama has established a strong record as a true friend of Israel, a stalwart defender of Israel’s security, and an effective advocate of strengthening the steadfast U.S.-Israel relationship, publicly stating that Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state should never be challenged.” – Lester Crown (Chicago)

Lester Crown is a Chicagoan with a net worth of four billion dollars. He owns a large stake in, and is a former president and board chairman of, defense contractor General Dynamics.

He also has held large holdings in Hilton Hotels, Maytag (now Whirlpool), and the Chicago Bulls and New York Yankees.

Crown was an early supporter of Barack Obama’s candidacy first for the U.S. Senate, and then for president.

He is one of the first, and one of his most, prodigious fundraisers.

As the Obama presidential campaign website says, the candidate “… systematically built a sophisticated, and in many ways quite conventional, money machine.” The Crowns were an integral part of that machinery.

One of Lester Crown’s children, James Crown, personally bundled $500,000 in campaign contributions for Obama and served as chairman of the Illinois fund raising effort. Lester Crown and his wife Renee hosted a fundraiser for Obama in 2007 at their home.

  15. If Obama would just make some Teleprompted Speeches about D-Day and such and leave the Decision Making to Someone Competent we'd have a Passable President.

  16. Most US Citizens will be unaware of D-Day and of its consequences. Ironically, that is the greatest compliment to the success of the day; societies return to civilization and normalcy, far from perfect but a warm glow of pleasant, blissful, mundane ignorance.

  17. Dresden was bombed as a lessons for the Russians. Its strategic importance was the impression it made on Soviet generals and Uncle Joe's grand designs on Western Europe.

You see, the Soviet had punched it out with the Germans one grim mile after one grim mile. Casualties ran into eight figures. But when they watched the waves of bombers reduce Dresden to ash in a matter of hours, a lesson was learned: Eisenhower's machine knows how to move east and reduce the Red Army to stone age rabble.
