Sunni insurgents led by ISIS jihadists captured the northwestern Iraqi town of Tal Afar on Sunday, reports say, as the militants continue their advance on Baghdad. The US says it is relocating some of its embassy staff to other Iraqi cities.
The militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS/ISIL) overran the town after fighting with security forces, several people in the town told Reuters over the phone.
Iraqi Gen. Mohammed al-Quraishi confirmed to CNN that the city fell to Sunni rebels. Tal Afar is located in the Nineveh province and has a population of about 80,000 people, most of whom are Iraqi Turkmen.
ISIS has also reportedly captured two villages in Diyala province.

A high-ranking official with Israeli Central Command said that they are believed to be in the West Bank,
but he is not fully certain.
He said security forces are focusing on Hamas infrastructure in the southern West Bank. At least 2,000 Israeli troops have been mobilized to locate the missing teens.
Right after the abduction, one of the teens managed to call the police hotline and say "We've been kidnapped."
Among those arrested was former Hamas spokesman Hassan Yousef.
Obviously Hassan Yousef is a key person in the kidnapping ring, just as Jay Carney was an operational agent of the BLM at Clive Bundy's ranch in Nevada. Bibi is using the kidnapping for political purposes, there has been no evidence presented that Hamas has those teens.
We could trust, but Mr Reagan demanded verification.

It’s Not the American Way

The United States has been at war -- major boots-on-the-ground conflicts and minor interventions, firefights, air strikes, drone assassination campaigns, occupations, special ops raids, proxy conflicts, and covert actions -- nearly nonstop since the Vietnam War began. That’s more than half a century of experience with war, American-style, and yet few in our world bother to draw the obvious conclusions.
Given the historical record, those conclusions should be staring us in the face. They are, however, the words that can’t be said in a country committed to a military-first approach to the world, a continual build-up of its forces, an emphasis on pioneering work in the development and deployment of the latest destructive technology, and a repetitious cycling through styles of war from full-scale invasions and occupations to counterinsurgency, proxy wars, and back again.
So here are five straightforward lessons -- none acceptable in what passes for discussion and debate in this country -- that could be drawn from that last half century of every kind of American warfare:
1. No matter how you define American-style war or its goals, it doesn’t work. Ever.
2. No matter how you pose the problems of our world, it doesn’t solve them. Never.
3. No matter how often you cite the use of military force to “stabilize” or “protect” or “liberate” countries or regions, it is a destabilizing force.
4. No matter how regularly you praise the American way of war and its “warriors,” the U.S. military is incapable of winning its wars.
5. No matter how often American presidents claim that the U.S. military is “the finest fighting force in history,” the evidence is in: it isn’t.
And here’s a bonus lesson: if as a polity we were to take these five no-brainers to heart and stop fighting endless wars, which drain us of national treasure, we would also have a long-term solution to the Veterans Administration health-care crisis. It’s not the sort of thing said in our world, but the VA is in a crisis of financing and caregiving that, in the present context, cannot be solved, no matter whom you hire or fire. The only long-term solution would be to stop fighting losing wars that the American people will pay for decades into the future, as the cost in broken bodies and broken lives is translated into medical care and dumped on the VA.

The BBC's Rajini Vaidyanathan in Washington says that while the US and Iran are old adversaries both have an interest in curbing the growing threat posed by ISIS and both are considering military support to the Iraqi government.
The US is said to be considering direct discussions with Tehran which could even take place as early as this week.
The two countries are due to hold the latest round of talks on Iran's nuclear programme in Vienna.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has said he will consider cooperation if the US takes action in Iraq.

Nice analysis from Mario Loyola writing at NRO about Obama's real culpability in what's happening today in Iraq.
Obama came into office promising to end the war in Iraq. As Loyola points out, the war was already over. What he was really trying to do was prove the war was a mistake and that the exerrtion of American power led to the error.
To that end, he left Iraq far too early and the consequences were predictable.
This novel conception of when wars end suggests Obama may yet pull our forces out of Europe and the Far East in order to “end” World War II. It also helps to explain how he came to equate “responsibly ending the war in Iraq” with throwing away everything we had gained from it. Obama made it plain from the start that he saw no reason to keep investing in a mistake. He let our military presence in Iraq lapse, and left the Iraqi government to fend for itself when it was still far too fragile. There is a reason we stayed in Germany and Japan and South Korea for decades after the fighting stopped: We didn’t want our sacrifices to be for nothing, and we didn’t want to have to fight again.

With Iran’s power and prestige thus enhanced, and rapidly filling the vacuum left behind by the U.S., the mullahs now see the possibility at long last of extending the Islamic Revolution across the Fertile Crescent. With our impending agreement to let Iran keep its nuclear-weapons programs, we can now settle comfortably into the role of a de facto subordinate ally of Iran, whose forces we may soon be helping with air strikes in Iraq. If you’re wondering where that leaves our actual allies among the Gulf kingdoms and Israel, they are wondering the same thing.
Foreign-policy mistakes are inevitable, and should generally be expected, if not always forgiven. But in its approach to Iraq and the Middle East as a whole, the Obama administration has been criminally negligent. It could be years and maybe decades before we see a situation as good as the one Obama found when he got to office — and things are almost certainly going to get far worse before they get better.
When a politician invests so much in trying to prove failure, what are we to expect but failure? ISIS was nearly dead and buried in 2008 following the surge. The fact that they were able to reconstitute themselves is due to two factors; the Syrian civil war where they first went to fight and recruit; and the policies of Prime Minister Maliki that angered Sunnis and fed Sunni paranoia about Shiite dominance. Both factors existed because Barack Obama failed to back the secular opposition (or, at least, the non-jihadist opposition) in Syria and because there was no restraining influence of American troops in Iraq, Maliki brought down the hammer on Sunnis.
In a very real sense, Loyola is right. It is decisions made by the president that has led directly to the situation Iraq finds itself in today. Restarting the war? He practically encouraged it with his policies

Rufus receives VA benefits for some Mickey Mouse, non-service related disability. In order to get these benefits he had to make application. When he was accepted for treatment, VA sent him the standard form, acknowledging and approving his treatment, and rating his disability. He could easily post that here. But he will not because it would show his service was uneventful and, as importantly, he is milking the system, in my opinion.
Having served the United States long and honorably, I have nothing to answer for. If this were the 18th C., I would give you pogs another option, but such are the disappointments of life.

Nonsense. Prior to George W. Bush, the U.S. was at the height of its power. It was 'the' hyper-power in a disjointed world. As a result of US intervention and sectarian hatred within Iraq as well as the misguided policies of the government we helped install, civil war was inevitable whether before, now, or later. Any splitting of the country as a result of the civil war was predictable also as was the bloodshed and the dislocation of tens of thousands. There was no other reasonable result to expect given the sectarian animus and the pursuit by the various sides of the country's only real resource, oil.
To believe the resulting chaos would have been any different had the US tried to impose a division of the country into three parts is childish prattle. It adds one more touch of bathos to the whole sorry tragedy that was and is Iraq.
At least letting the chaos evolve on its own without more US interference prevents more blood being shed in the world due to US actions.

DeleteAs the Iraqi army fled they left behind a bunch of US supplied stuff - armored personnel carriers, night vision goggles, rifles and other war material. You also have the complicity of the locals who aren't too keen on the Malaki rule run from Baghdad. The Kurds also capitalized on the kerfuffle and grabbed Kirkuk. Iraq is splintered along ethnic lines with each sector backed by regional powers. It won't be so easy to put humpty dumpty back together again simply by jarring the memory of Baghdadi and his 7000 followers in their pick-ups by launching a few missiles their way. Instead we are looking at the possibility of renewed sectarian conflict which could blossom into full civil war followed by a regional war.
Sorry guys, nothing so simple as well devised plans moving forward over the speed bump of a 7k guys and their pick-ups.

If you think that Mr Obama, and his backers have a deep concern for the Iraqi people, I'd say you were mistaken.
All of the US clients will be getting at least a portion of their goal set.
Iraq will be limited to production of no more than 3 million barrels of oil per day.
That has always been the quota, and the trigger point for military action. That chart was posted a few days ago.
Syria will be left out on a limb, with the Iranians now focused closer to home, and the US engaged with them on a working basis.
The boyz in ISIL will not retreat down an open road hauling their pick-ups and other booty with them. Nope, they'll blend right in with the general population. Plus, I don't think the US and Obama has the appetite for a bombing campaign supporting Malaki in alliance with Iran unless a grand deal could be worked out.

DeleteISIS has had a good run but it will be tougher from here on out I suspect. The Kurds have replaced the fleeing police and army in the north and are consolidating their positions. Maliki is attempting to get the army to regroup for a counter attack. He has asked citizens (read Shia militias) to join the fight. The spokesman for al-Sistani has urged all Shia to join in the fight against ISIS. Evidently, thousands are agreeing to join in the fight. The President of Iran has indicated that ISIS will not be allowed to overthrow the government of Iraq. In Iraq, the Shia outnumber the Sunni two to one. This might not mean much if ISIS could motivate the Sunni population to fight; however, the ISIS pricks are even too radical for al Queda to stomach. I would be surprised if ISIS is able to motivate a general uprising of the Sunni population.

DeleteI really don't know how the local Sunni's view the ISIS. They certainly don't seem happy with the Malaki government. The Iraqi army fled pretty damn fast and I don't know how much of a stomach for a fight they have to retake the Sunni areas. With Iranian backing, and the Shia Imams call to arms they may very well may summon the force and find the will but if the Sunni side should also reach out (i.e. Saudi Arabia, Syria ect.) for help and get it that is where the conflict could extend and become regional. I hope the US stays out of it. Too many players, too many moving parts, too much risk for little national gain.

Last Friday afternoon, the Internal Revenue Service claimed that Lois Lerner, a former executive tasked with overseeing tax-exemption applications, lost thousands of emails after her computer crashed. Many of those emails, the tax collection agency claimed, could not be recovered.
This convenient excuse for failing to comply with a request from House investigators is not sitting well with some in the journalistic community.
“Do you believe in the Easter Bunny?” CNN’s John King asked his panel of political reporters on Monday. “Do you believe in Santa Claus? Do you believe that Lois Lerner’s emails suddenly went ‘poof?’”
King added that he agreed with Rep. Dave Camp (R-MI) who said that it was “unacceptable” that this information was just coming to light now, over a year after the investigation into allegations that the IRS targeted conservative political groups with undue scrutiny began.
“Waiting a year to tell the Congress makes me suspicious,” King said.
“It’s hard to believe in this era, where you have servers, and backup servers, and all kinds of technology that can recover all kinds of emails, that these emails simply don’t exist,” Associated Press reporter Julie Pace agreed. “If that is true, and they don’t exist, why wasn’t that one of the first things that was told to Congress?”
“I’m not sure what’s with this administration and computer problems, but it seems to be happening time and again,” Politico’s Manu Raju concurred.
It seems that even those predisposed to extend federal officials the benefit of the doubt are not accepting the claim that Lerner’s emails simply disappeared into thin air at face value.
In a sardonic segment on MSNBC’s Morning Joe on Monday, hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough ruthlessly mocked the notion that a hardware crash could eliminate files stored on remote servers.
“Mika, even you have to admit this is pretty ridiculous,” Scarborough probed.
“Pretty ridiculous,” Brzezinski replied. “Those emails exist.”

Doug, I have three tablets running Android, three laptops (2 running Win7, 1 running XP), a Chromebox, a Chromecast, and ten desktops (a mix of towers and small-form-factor boxes) running anything from Windows 3.1 to 98 to XP to 7, and Linuxes out the Kazoo. I took a Chromebook to the Philippines last year and stepped on it. You should get a Samsung Chromebook 3 for about $239 or so, because you sound like the sort of fellow who just wants to use his gear than fiddle with it.

Obama says the forces are going to provide support and security for U.S. personnel and the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. He says the forces are equipped for combat and will remain in Iraq until the security situation becomes such that they are no longer needed.
About 160 troops are already in Iraq, including 50 Marines and more than 100 Army soldiers. Some of those soldiers have only recently arrived.
Under the authorization Obama outlined, a U.S. official says the U.S. will put an additional 100 soldiers in a nearby third country where they would be held in reserve until needed.
The White House says the U.S. military personnel are entering Iraq with its consent.

No one in this day and age of off-site backup servers and cloud computing believes that they lost two years of emails from the IRS chief because one platform went Tango Uniform. This isn't the days of Windows 98. I want a special prosecutor to find a copy of these emails, and I want to bring the idiot who claimed they were missing in front of a committee under oath to testify why they were reported lost. Follow it all the way up to the White House if need be. I don't know what's more frightening, that the Obama Administration is destroying evidence or that they handle evidence like they handle everyone's medical information. But there is a legal requirement for Feds to keep their emails, and this is a nation of laws.
