Cantor lost because of Amnesty

Eric Cantor Loses GOP Primary. Wait, What!?
—By Tim Murphy

Buckle your seatbelts, K Street: Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) is looking for work.
On Tuesday, in the biggest political upset of recent memory, Cantor, the House majority leader who was considered next-in-line to be House speaker, lost his Republican primary by double digits to David Brat, a college professor he'd outspent down the stretch by a factor of 12.
It was never supposed to be close. After Cantor flooded the district with nearly $1 million in advertising and direct mail, a leaked internal poll showed the incumbent with a 34-point lead over Brat. Cantor became the first majority leader to lose a primary in 115 years.
So who is Brat?
  • A libertarian economist—but not a Randian. Per Betsy Woodruff's January profile in National Review:
He chairs the department of economics and business at Randolph-Macon College and heads its BB&T Moral Foundations of Capitalism program. The funding for the program came from John Allison, the former CEO of BB&T (a financial-services company) who now heads the Cato Institute. The two share an affinity for Ayn Rand: Allison is a major supporter of the Ayn Rand Institute, and Brat co-authored a paper titled "An Analysis of the Moral Foundations in Ayn Rand." Brat says that while he isn't a Randian, he has been influenced by Atlas Shrugged and appreciates Rand’s case for human freedom and free markets.
According to his Rate My Professors page, he is "SOLID," "humorous," and "hot":

  • An immigration hardliner. For months, the only interesting thing about the race was its impact on Cantor's public comments on immigration reform. Brat considered Cantor a sellout for tepidly supporting some sort of comprehensive immigration reform, and Cantor responded by taking credit for killing the entire thing and alleging that Brat secretly had the support of "liberal" reform advocates. Voters received mailers bragging that "CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN ERIC CANTOR IS STOPPING THE OBAMA-REID PLAN TO GIVE ILLEGAL ALIENS AMNESTY." With Cantor's defeat, you can bet Republicans who so much as hinted at supporting an immigration overhaul are hearing footsteps.
  • A debt-ceiling denialist. A top Brat critique of Cantor is that he supported raising the federal government's debt ceiling—however reluctantly. As Brat told Slate's Dave Weigel last month, "My commitment is not to increase spending; to have a spending bill where you don’t increase it. Cantor’s voted for 10 of the last 15 debt ceiling increases. I just don’t buy the idea that you are truly put in the position of backing the debt ceiling increase the last minute, that you had no choice."
  • A dragon slayer. With the primary victory, Brat will almost certainly head to Congress next fall representing a deep-red central Virginia district. Cantor is prohibited by Virginia's "sore loser" law from appearing on the ballot as an independent candidate in November. Brat just needs to get past Democrat Jack Trammell, a colleague at Randolph-Macon College who runs the school's disability services and, according to his Amazon author page, is currently writing a vampire novel.

Cantor, who has been dubbed a "rising star" going back to 2001, will almost certainly land on his feet. There's already a helpful Craigslist posting for "Experienced House Republican Seeking New Opportunity." Serious offers only.

For 10 days, Americans have argued over the wisdom of trading five Taliban senior commanders for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.

President Obama handed the Taliban a victory, critics contend, and imperiled U.S. troops in Afghanistan when the five return to the battlefield. Moreover, he has inspired the Haqqani network and other Islamists to capture more Americans to trade.

But which represents the greater long-term threat to the safety and security of our people and nation: sending those five Taliban leaders to Doha, and perhaps back to Afghanistan, or releasing into the U.S. population last year 36,000 criminal illegal aliens with 88,000 convictions among them?

    {...}

  4. {...}

According to a May report of the Center for Immigration Studies, of the 36,000 criminal aliens who, while awaiting deportation, were set free by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, 193 had been convicted of homicide, 426 of sexual assault, 303 of kidnaping, 1,075 of aggravated assault, 1,160 for stolen vehicles, 9,187 for possession or use of dangerous drugs, and 16,070 for driving drunk or drugged.

Those 36,000 criminal aliens are roughly equivalent to three-and-a-half divisions of felons and social misfits released into our midst.

And this does not include the 68,000 illegal aliens against whom ICE declined to press criminal charges last year, but turned loose.
How goes the Third World invasion of the United States?

According to the AP, the U.S. Border Patrol’s Rio Grande Valley sector made 148,017 arrests from Oct. 1 to May 17, while 62,876 were caught in the Tucson sector, the second-busiest crossing point.

That is almost 211,000 illegal aliens caught in just over half a year in just two sectors of the border. And that figure only tells us how many were caught, not how many got in, or how many of those caught were released and now reside among us.

Among those caught crossing into Texas these last seven months were 47,000 unaccompanied children. Border Patrol estimates that by Sept. 30, apprehensions of children and teenagers in this fiscal year could reach 90,000.

According to Gov. Jan Brewer, the feds have begun shipping illegal aliens, adults as well as children, from Texas to Arizona, “dumping” them into her state.

“This is a humanitarian crisis and it requires a humanitarian response,” says Maryland Sen. Barbara Mikulski of the surge in children from Central America across the U.S. border.

Attorney General Eric Holder has risen to the crisis. The U.S. will now provide lawyers for children who enter illegally, to fight their battle in U.S. courts to stay.

“We’re taking this historic step,” says Holder, “to protect the rights of the most vulnerable members of our society. How we treat those in need — particularly young people who are fleeing violence, persecution, abuse or trafficking — goes to the core of who we are as a nation.”

Somehow the core contention of James Burnham’s “Suicide of the West,” out 50 years ago this year, comes to mind.

“Liberalism,” wrote Burnham. “is the ideology of Western suicide.”

America and the West must face up to what is happening to our countries and our civilization. Or we are going to lose them both forever.
Treating with contempt U.S. and European laws, peoples from failed states of the Third World are steadily filling up our countries and reducing our native-born into slowly shrinking national majorities.

If this continues over many more decades, Western nations as we knew them will disappear forever, and be remade in the image of those who have newly arrived, and the countries whence they came.

When, ever, did Americans vote for this?

What would constitute a pro-American immigration policy?

A moratorium on all immigration until unemployment among U.S. citizens falls below five percent. A 15-foot security fence from San Diego to the Gulf, with Border Patrol outposts every 10 miles. Fines and community service for businessmen who hire illegal aliens.

Europe is facing the same crisis. This past weekend, 5,200 migrants were caught on boats crossing from Africa to Italy. Spain and Greece, too, are major crossing points from sub-Sahara Africa and the Arab and Islamic world into the heart of Europe.

Yet as we saw in the May European parliamentary elections, the peoples of Europe are not going quietly into that good night that their elites have prepared for them.

They want to preserve the unique countries that they once were. Frenchmen want France to remain France, as the Brits want to remain British.

And despite the names they are being called, there is nothing wrong with that. As Euripides wrote, there is no “greater grief than the loss of one native land.”

The Republican establishment of Jeb Bush, John Boehner, Eric Cantor, and the Senate hierarchy is prepared to collaborate with Barack Obama on a halt to deportations and partial amnesty.

If so, we shall find out whether the Republican Party still has a heart and soul, or whether, in the last analysis, it comes down to the money.”

  6. it was Cantor himself – not immigration – that dealt a powerful blow to the one-time rising Republican star’s political career. And they are releasing new data on Wednesday to back up their argument.

About 72 percent of registered voters in Cantor’s district polled on Tuesday said they either “strongly” or “somewhat” support immigration reform that would secure the borders, block employers from hiring those here illegally, and allow undocumented residents without criminal backgrounds to gain legal status – three key tenets of an overhaul, according to a poll by the left-leaning firm Public Policy Polling and commissioned by the liberal advocacy group Americans United for Change.

Looking just at Republicans in Cantor’s district, the poll found that 70 percent of GOP registered voters would support such a plan, while 27 percent would oppose.

Meanwhile, Cantor was deeply unpopular in his district, the PPP poll found. About 63 percent of those surveyed in his district said they did not approve of the job Cantor has been doing, with 30 percent of registered voters approving. Among Republicans, 43 percent approved of Cantor’s job performance, while 49 percent disapproved, the survey found.

“Cantor didn’t lose because of immigration,” pollster Tom Jensen wrote in the memo obtained in advance by POLITICO. “He lost because of the deep unpopularity of both himself personally and of the Republican House leadership. Even in his conservative district voters still want immigration reform passed, and they want it this year.”

Immigration advocates quickly argued following Cantor’s stunning loss that they never saw the No. 2 House Republican as an ally. Instead, they pointed to Republicans such as Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Rep. Renee Ellmers of North Carolina – lawmakers who coasted through their primary challenges despite supporting immigration reform.

Still, despite support in public polling for an immigration overhaul, the House Republican conference has long been deeply divided on the issue. A major sticking point is what to do with the estimated 11 million immigrants in the U.S. illegally, and Cantor’s loss all but assured that immigration reform won’t come up in the House this year.

PPP surveyed 488 registered voters in Cantor’s Richmond-area district on Tuesday, and the poll’s margin of error is plus or minus 4.4 percent.

    In Fact ....

Administration Spends More on Immigration Than all Other Federal Law Enforcement Combined

Last year, the Obama administration spent almost $18 billion on immigration enforcement. That's more than what it spent on the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration, Secret Service, U.S. Marshals Service, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, combined, according to a report by the Migration Policy Institute. Twenty-four percent more to be exact.

Considering the amount of money that is spent, "today, immigration enforcement can be seen as the federalgovernment's highes criminal law enforcement priority," a co-author of the report said in a statement.

In addition to huge spending, immigration enforcement accounts for over half of federally prosecuted crimes. The nearly 430,000 people detained each year for immigration-related crimes is a significantly larger number than the entire population currently serving sentences for all federal crimes combined. Meanwhile, deportations have increased from 30,000 in 1990 to nearly 400,000 in 2011.

The flood of migrant children trying to cross the Mexican border alone has become an "urgent humanitarian situation" that is likely to cost the government more than $1 billion more than the Obama administration thought.

Late last week, the Obama administration asked Congress for $1.4 billion in extra funding to help house, feed and transport the tens of thousands of children being caught trying to cross the border illegally, and turned to the Defense Department to help temporarily house more than 1,000 of the children.

Obama's rhetoric of "Immigration Reform" does not match his actions ....

If you want to look good on deportations, you merely change the way the numbers are calculated. That's what Obama has done since his first few years and what has earned him the nickname the "Deportation President". He figured making it look like he was tough on immigration would encourage immigration reform. That hasn't worked and now the numbers that were published are coming back to bite him in the ass with his base. Therefore, look for him to 'evolve' on the immigration issue this year similar to how he 'evolved' on the gay marriage issue going into the 2012 election.

n a stunning admission before a House Committee panel on Tuesday, DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson admitted that the Obama Administration has been artificially inflating deportation numbers. While the administration has claimed a "record number" of deportations, earning Pres. Obama the nickname "Deporter in Chief", Johnson admitted that they have been counting border apprehensions that are turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers as deportations.

During a House Appropriations Committee hearing, Rep. John Culberson (R-Texas) said to Johnson, "Under the Obama administration, more than half of those removals that were attributed to ICE are actually a result of Border Patrol arrests that wouldn't have been counted in prior administrations."

      Johnson responded, "Correct."

Jessica Vaughan, the Director of Policy Studies at the Center for Immigration Studies, has been arguing that actual deportations have declined under Pres. Obama. In her research, she says that if you count all removals, including those done by ICE and Border Patrol, then the Obama administration averages 800,000 removals per year. In comparison, George W. Bush would have removed more than 1.3 million illegal aliens per year, and Bill Clinton would have removed more than 1.5 million per year.

Vaughan also found that if you examine deportations from enforcement efforts by ICE, the number declined by 19 percent between 2011 and 2012 and was on track to decline another 22 percent in 2013. Further, the total number of deportations in 2011 was the lowest level since 1973.

Until recent years, most people caught illegally crossing the southern border were simply bused back into Mexico in what officials called "voluntary returns," but which critics derisively termed "catch and release." Those removals, which during the 1990s reached more 1 million a year, were not counted in Immigration and Customs Enforcement's deportation statistics.
Now, the vast majority of border crossers who are apprehended get fingerprinted and formally deported. The change began during the George W. Bush administration and accelerated under Obama. The policy stemmed in part from a desire to ensure that people who had crossed into the country illegally would have formal charges on their records.

In the Obama years, all of the increase in deportations has involved people picked up within 100 miles of the border, most of whom have just recently crossed over. In 2013, almost two-thirds of deportations were in that category.
At the same time, the administration largely ended immigration roundups at workplaces and shifted investigators into targeting business owners who illegally hired foreign workers.

"If you are a run-of-the-mill immigrant here illegally, your odds of getting deported are close to zero — it's just highly unlikely to happen," John Sandweg, until recently the acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said in an interview.
Even when immigration officials want to deport someone who already has settled in the country, doing so is "virtually impossible" because of a lengthy backlog in the immigration courts, Sandweg said. Once people who have no prior removals or convictions are placed in deportation proceedings, actually removing them from the country can take six years or more in some jurisdictions, Sandweg said.

    3. So, once more, we find that the Obama Administration has "Stayed the Course" that was charted by the Bush Administration.

Instead of "Catch and Release" we now have "Arrest and Documentation", and a new source of 'complaint' by those that oppose the President. The process of counting was not changed, but the process of patrol, arrest and deportation was tightened, as was demanded by those that wanted to 'control' the border.

And Obama is accused of 'cheating'. . . . The backlog in the Courts ... caused by obstructionists in the Senate.
Since the change in filibuster rules, last year ...

The Senate has confirmed more than 40 of President Barack Obama's judicial nominees in the last six months. Sure, Republicans continue to protest last year's filibuster reform that makes it easier for Democrats to advance the president's picks. But for all the delays GOP senators have imposed as retribution, they've mostly voted to confirm Obama's nominees anyway.

The Senate has taken action on so many nominees that it's actually running out of people to confirm. Only seven judicial nominees haven't had hearings. Two -- Jennifer May-Parker of North Carolina and Alison Lee of South Carolina –- don't appear to be going anywhere because their home-state senators refuse to let them move forward in the Senate Judiciary Committee.

But as the Senate clears the decks, one of the biggest obstacles to filling empty court seats remains: Having nominees at all. There are still 38 federal court vacancies around the country that don't have nominees. The blame falls on home-state senators, who simply aren't recommending potential nominees to the president.

Obama's shifting words on immigration prove he is an opportunist who lacks any core beliefs. It will likely end up biting him in the ass.

Every department that I can think of within his administration has had its share of scandals and the MO is always the same: deny knowing about the problem, postpone any judgment until 'all the facts are known', delay, if the story doesn't go away try to minimize it and isolate it to one or two minor players, if it continues deflect blame away from the White House, appoint an 'independent' group of 'experts' to study the problem and offer the recommendations, the group then comes up with a slap on the wrist response that may or may not involve some minor bureaucrats buried in some backwater, declare anyone who continues to ask questions to be partisan, then deny, deny, deny, counting on the average attention span of Americans who are impatiently waiting for the next episode of 'Game of Thrones'.

The Bergdahl exchange is a case in point. I can see both sides of the actual exchange and wouldn't argue for or against the exchange one way or another. However, the way it has been handled reflects the ineptitude of this White House.

We can speculate on the reasons for the exchange but past experience tells us the chances are pretty slim that the real reasons for the release are those being publicly offered up by the White House. The latest gaff, trying to blame the decision on Hagel and then backtracking, is indicative of the ham-handed PR approach of this White House.

One wonders if it is Obama or his staff that is calling the shots on their approach? Are their talking points driven by arrogance, contempt, or just stupidity?

I am not concerned about the five guys released. If they were the evil geniuses the Daily Standard portrays them to be they wouldn't have been caught. Besides there are thousands of these guys all over the ME. Some shit-for-brains on FOX said this will encourage the enemy to capture more soldiers. Lordy, where do they recruit these idiots. As if any of our enemies required additional 'encouragement' to capture and kill our soldiers. This deal will have no impact on our soldiers.

However, I do have a major concern about the increased risk to American diplomats and ordinary citizens around the world.

Obama and Bush before him have created this atmosphere by charging anyone who does any crime or who fights against the US and can't afford a uniform with epaulets and a beret as a terrorist. This applies to domestic crimes or to foreign combat from al Queda to the Taliban. As was pointed out, these guys are Taliban and prisoners of war. And the world should view this as a prisoner exchange; however, in a world defined by the 'war on terror' it takes on the appearance of 'negotiating with terrorists. What I am afraid this might result in is ordinary citizens being captured worldwide and the US be extorted for every type of ransom imaginable.

Instead of "Catch and Release" we now have "Arrest and Documentation", and a new source of 'complaint' by those that oppose the President.

    Don't be silly (sillier?), rat.

In talking of Obama's 'record' number of deportations, you offer us 'facts' without context. I merely provided the context.

My main point, however, was that no matter what Obama does it seems to come back and bite him in the ass. He intentionally used the higher numbers for a particular political reason and it didn't work. Instead, it is now coming back to bite him in the ass with his base. It appears the 'Deporter in Chief' will once again have to 'evolve' on an issue.

The fact remains that the "Tea Party" contingent demanded "Border Security", they got "Border Security". Arrests are UP, deportations are UP.
"Catch and Release" is no longer the policy of the US.
That there are unforeseen consequences when the Tea Party demands were fulfilled, par for the course.
That they are now unhappy with the results of the implementation of their demands, perfectly understandable.

Rat, you insist on misreading the simplest of facts.

Served him well? Last time I looked his approval rating at RCP was less than 43%. He has gotten no significant legislation through since his reelection. He is a lame duck already and there is still an outside chance he will lose the Senate. His two main proposals coming out the state of the union address, gun control and immigration reform, were dead on arrival.

Border security is in the eye of the beholder. Playing around with numbers will not fool anyone who is paying attention merely those who see one set of numbers and accept them without checking for context. Obama's performance has satisfied neither his opponents nor his base. The guy is incompetent.

The king of fools Obama 'tried' to play them for fools. Only a fool would think he has succeeded.

      Sunnis vs. Shiites and Kurds:
Mayhem in Iraq Is Starting to Look Like a Civil War
      By Edward Wong
      The New York Times

      Sunday 05 December 2004.
      ...
The strategy surfaced dramatically last month in Mosul, a city in northern Iraq where violence flared even as American troops carried out their devastating assault on insurrectionists in the Sunni stronghold of Falluja. In Mosul, the governor trucked in 2,000 Kurdish militiamen, and much of the fighting that followed took place in the city's Sunni Arab neighborhoods, where American convoys are now attacked daily.

Mosul is a microcosm of the problems afflicting Iraq, and civil conflict is clearly on the rise there.
The insurgency is being organized by former Baath Party officials who are intent on retaking power from fellow Iraqis, rather than by jihadists simply trying to sow anarchy, said Brig. Gen. Carter F. Ham, commander of a task force charged with controlling the far north. The guerrillas have executed at least 90 Iraqis in recent days, many from the nascent security forces.

    2. The strategy remains the same.

      11/19/2004 1:33:49 PM ET

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Insurgents battling U.S. and Iraqi forces in the northern city of Mosul have been trying to drag the Kurdish minority into their fight and set off a sectarian war, Kurdish and Arab officials say.

Violence against Kurds has escalated in recent days, officials say. The offices — and officials — of Kurdish political parties have been attacked. Insurgents fired on a truck carrying Kurdish peshmerga fighters. And at least one Kurd was said to have been beheaded in Mosul, a largely Sunni Arab city.

“They are trying to ignite the flames of sedition between Arabs and Kurds,” Khasro Gouran, Mosul’s Kurdish deputy provincial governor, said by telephone from Mosul. “They want the Kurds to react and the peshmerga to come in (from outside Mosul) so there would be sectarian strife in the city.”

“They won’t succeed because the Kurdish leadership is aware of their plans,” Gov. Duraid Kashmoula, an Arab, said of the insurgents.

On Friday, a 49-year-old woman called police because her boyfriend had fired shots from a handgun and was still armed at the time, according to the Prescott Valley Police Department.

Officers arrived at a residence near Robert Road and Loos Drive where they confronted 39-year-old Cameron Read.

Read initially refused to leave the residence, but eventually exited and resisted arrest before being taken into custody by force, according to police.

The victims told police Read had commented about seeing Halley’s Comet, and shortly after, began firing out a window.

The victims heard several shots before fleeing the residence.

Read later told officials he was not trying to harm anyone, but was shooting at the moon. He also admitted to smoking marijuana before the shooting.

    No victims were injured.

Read was booked into Yavapai County Jail and faces seven charges including criminal damage, disorderly conduct and endangerment.

  29. Islamist insurgents in Iraq have seized the city of Tikrit, their second major gain after capturing Mosul on Tuesday, security officials say.

Tikrit, the hometown of former leader Saddam Hussein, lies just 150km (95 miles) north of the capital Baghdad.

Iraqi PM Nouri Maliki has vowed to fight back against the jihadists and punish those in the security forces who have deserted.

The insurgents are from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS).

ISIS, which is also known as ISIL, is an offshoot of al-Qaeda.

It controls considerable territory in eastern Syria and western and central Iraq, in a campaign to set up a Sunni militant enclave straddling the border.

There were also reports on Thursday of fighting further south, in Samarra, 110km north of Baghdad.

Separately, at least 21 people were killed and 45 hurt by a suicide bomber at a Shia meeting in Baghdad, police said.

    'Do not give in'
As many as 500,000 people fled Mosul after the militants attacked the city. The head of the Turkish mission in Mosul and almost 50 consulate officials are being held by the militants, Turkish officials say.

  34. The pro-amnesty crowd -- i.e., everyone except the American people -- promptly lost its collective mind. The amnesty shills went on the attack, insisting that Cantor's historic defeat had nothing to do amnesty. Brat's triumph was touted as simply a victory for the "tea party."

Of course, these are the same people who also try to persuade us that amnesty isn't "amnesty," illegal aliens aren't "illegal aliens" (they're "undocumented workers"!), and that there are 30 million jobs Americans won't do at any price.

In fact, however, the tea party had nothing to do with Brat's victory. Only the small, local tea party groups stand for anything anymore, but they're as different from the media-recognized "tea party" as lay Catholics are from the Catholic bishops.

National tea party groups did not contribute dime one to Brat. Not Freedom Works, not Club for Growth, not the Tea Party Express, not Tea Party Patriots. They were too busy denouncing Sen. Mitch McConnell -- who has consistently voted against amnesty.

As I have been warning you, the big, national tea party groups are mostly shysters and con-men raising money for their own self-aggrandizement. (Today, they're blast-faxing "media availability" notices to television networks claiming credit for Brat's victory.)

The Tea Party Express, for example, "represents" the views of ordinary Americans by supporting Chamber of Commerce demands for cheap labor through amnesty.

As Eric Hoffer said, "Every great cause begins as a movement, becomes a business, and eventually degenerates into a racket."

Nonetheless, the claim that Brat's victory was a win for the tea party is everywhere -- pushed with suspicious insistence by people who do not usually wish the Republican Party well. Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schulz, for example, said: "Tonight's result in Virginia settles the debate once and for all -- the tea party has taken control of the Republican Party. Period."

Liberals apparently want Brat's victory to be seen as a win for the tea party, and not a defeat for amnesty.

At least acknowledging the obvious -- Brat's victory was about amnesty -- New York's Sen. Chuck Schumer said: "Cantor's defeat does not change the fundamental fact that Republicans will become a minority party if they don't address our broken immigration system."

And if anyone has the Republican Party's best interests at heart, it's gotta be Chuck Schumer!
