Edward Snowden

The Guardian Names Edward Snowden Person of the Year
5:13 AM PST 12/9/2013 by Scott Roxborough

Edward Snowden
The American whistleblower was the overwhelming favorite for the honor, as voted on by readers of the British newspaper.
The Guardian newspaper has named U.S. whistleblower Edward Snowden its person of the year.

Snowden won the honor, voted on by Guardian readers, with 1,445 votes, more than 40 percent of the total. A distant second, with 314 votes, were Marco Weber and Sini Saarela, the Greenpeace activists who staged the oil rig protest over Russian Arctic drilling. Pope Francis was third with 153 votes.

This was the second year running that The Guardian's top newsmaker honor went to an American whistleblower. Chelsea Manning, who was given a 35-year jail sentence in July for violations of the Espionage Act and other offenses connected to his leaking of classified documents to WikiLeaks, was The Guardian's Person of the Year 2012.

Snowden's revelations about the NSA's extensive programs of telephone and Internet surveillance has been front page news for The Guardian for months. The left-of-center newspaper was itself a key player in the revelations. In May, after leaving the U.S. for Hong Kong, Snowden met with Guardian journalists Glenn Greenwald and Ewen MacAskill to hand over the documents that exposed the NSA programs. Snowden then went into exile, eventually seeking asylum in Russia.

The Guardian said its readers were impressed by "his personal sacrifice, as much as his revelations."

was a Polish Jew and businessman who was appointed as the German Nazi-nominated head of the Ältestenrat ("Council of Elders"), or Jewish authorities in the Łódź Ghetto.

Some remember him for his haunting and tragic speech,
      " . . . . Give Me Your Children" . . . .,
in 1942, when the Germans insisted on deporting 20,000 children to death camps.

He was also remembered as an autocrat and tyrant who built a personal empire within the ghetto.
He made work the basis of survival and created profit for the Germans

      Stella {Goldschlag} Kübler Isaacksohn.
was a Jewish woman born in Germany who collaborated with the Gestapo during World War II, exposing and denouncing Berlin's underground Jews.

Kübler was very successful at finding her former schoolmates and handing their information over to the Gestapo.

The number of her victims varies from between 600 to 3,000 Jews.
Kübler's charisma and striking good looks were a great advantage in her pursuit of underground Jews.

He is obviously a whistleblower. He is not a felon until convicted. Of course, under current presidential rules, he could still get droned sitting in a café.

      1.
a person who informs on a person or organization engaged in an illicit activity.

What actions by his employer that Edward Snowden made public were illicit?

Which have been curtailed, because of the alleged illicitity since the exposures?

      adjective: illicit

      1. forbidden by law, rules, or custom.
      "illicit drugs"
synonyms: illegal, unlawful, illegitimate, criminal, felonious

Would indicate that Quirk believes that until a court rules activities to be illegal, lawless, criminal or felonious they are not to be construed as such.

This standard certainly applies to individuals, in the United States.

Should that standard also be applied to the actions of the Federal Government and the individuals empowered to act in its name and with its authority?

Or should the government be held to a different standard than and individual citizen?
      Only a Quirk would know.

Would indicate that Quirk believes that until a court rules activities to be illegal, lawless, criminal or felonious they are not to be construed as such.

Not really. There is a difference between conducting criminal activity and being convicted of conducting illegal activity. One is a moral issue, the other legal. IMO, there is a distinction between an illegal act itself and what you call the perpetrator of that act prior to him being convicted of the crime. I have no doubt that what Snowden did was a criminal act; however, he has not been tried even in absentia. So at this point, can we actually call him a felon until he is tried and found guilty? I don't think so. But maybe I'm wrong. I wouldn't get into an extended argument over it. That's my opinion.

Also IMO, the same standard should be held regarding the government. For instance, James Clapper lied to Congress under oath. Perjury is a felony under federal law. I am assuming (perhaps not a good idea) therefore that lying to Congress under oath is a felony. It's pretty obvious he committed the crime, he admitted to it. However, I might think him a slime bag and a criminal, but I wouldn't call him a felon until he was charged and convicted.

Perhaps, I am parsing it too closely.

      .

    6. The question though is whether Snowden is a whistleblower or a free lance spy.

If he exposed 'illicit' activity then he would be a whistleblower.
For the activity to be illicit, who decides that, if not a Court?

If the activity he reported upon was not illicit, just unsavory and clandestine, then he is a spy.

That is the crux of the issue, one you obviously wish to evade or at least ignore

    13. When Congress forbade U.S. forces to train the internal police forces of other countries-passed in 1974 - the Israelis stepped in and
"set up their intelligence network, tried and tested on the West Bank and Gaza."

Israeli noncommissioned officers were also said to have been hired by big landowners to train their private security details.

These private squads, together with "off-duty military officers formed the fearsome 'death squads' which later spread to neighboring El Salvador, where they have been responsible for an estimated 20,000-30,000 murders of left-wing dissidents."

The Guatemalan military is very conscious of that achievement, even proud of it.

In 1979, the Guatemalan interior minister paid a "secret and confidential" visit to Israel, where he met with the manufacturers of "sophisticated police equipment.
In March of the following year Interior Minister Donaldo Alvarez Ruiz was in Israel to conclude an agreement for police training.

Following the overthrow of Lucas Garcia, the home of Interior Minister Alvarez was raided, "uncovering underground jail cells, stolen vehicles...[and] scores of gold graduation rings, wrenched from the fingers of police torture victims."

In 1983 that there were 300 Israeli advisers in Guatemala, working "in the security structures and in the army."
Other reports were less specific as to numbers, but suggested that these Israeli advisers, "some official, others private," performed a variety of functions.
Israelis "helped Guatemalan internal security agents hunt underground rebel groups."

Israeli advisers have worked with the feared G-2 police intelligence unit. overseen by the army general staff, the G-2 is the intelligence agency - sections charged with "the elimination of individuals" are stationed at every army base - which has been largely responsible for the death squad killings over the last decade.

    14. For political Zionism to come to fruition – for a Jewish state to be created in Palestine –
it was necessary to carry out as large a scale as possible ethnic cleansing of the country’s unwanted Arab natives.

But even in 1948, and especially in 1967,
Israel was unable to fully ‘cleanse’ the land of the Palestinians.

As a result, Israel’s fallback position was to implement an apartheid regime
      of exclusion and discrimination.

Where the dispossession had been most effective –
inside Israel’s pre-1967 borders –apartheid could be less explicit.

But in the OPT, home to a vast majority of Palestinians,
Israeli apartheid had to be overt and iron-fisted.

  4. Snowden didn’t leak through WikiLeaks — in some trouble by the time he appeared — but I do not see how his actions can be anything other than a product of the process and context that WikiLeaks put in place. Nor would it have happened had WL not adopted a specific strategy in contrast to the usual “petty” libertarianism of the hackerati — one of mass leaks, audacious and visible challenge to the state.

    ...

Why that matters — quite aside from credit-where-due, etc — is that Snowden’s acts can seem as if they are in contrast to the WikiLeaks process, since Snowden’s act appears to be a noble and individual act, done without context, save the conscience. Some level of individual will was required, of course, a final decision to transgress — but it occurs within a context, and a way of understanding how the world works.

The better theory gives the better picture, and the better picture allows for more successful action. If there seems a long way to go in the struggle against this new totalitarian system, it is worth stepping back and reminding oneself that this is the NSA one has challenged, the NSA — once as all-encompassing as apartheid, and hopefully, in its current form, destined for the same fate.

  7. Ephraim Halevy is a Jew.

    Former Mossad Director Ephraim Halevy not only has publicly opposed an Israeli attack on Iran as anything but a last resort;
he is a longstanding supporter of a diplomatic solution to the Iran nuclear issue.
In September of 2012, Halevy told Haaretz‘s Ari Shavit that Israel needed to understand the Iranian perspective:

The basic feeling of that ancient nation is one of humiliation.
Both religious Iranians and secular Iranians feel that for 200 years the Western powers used them as their playthings.

They do not forget for a moment that the British and the Americans intervened in their internal affairs and
toppled the regime of Mohammad Mosaddeq in 1953. From their perspective, the reason why, to this day,
there is no modern rail network and no modern oil refineries in Iran is that the West prevented that.

Thus, the deep motive behind the Iranian nuclear project − which was launched by the Shah −
is not the confrontation with Israel, but the desire to restore to Iran the greatness of which it was long deprived.

I believe that if the West could find a way to propose to Iran alternative methods to acquire that sense of greatness,
Iran would forsake the nuclear road.

If Iran were offered trains and oil refineries and a place of honor in regional trade, it would consider this seriously.

A month later, in an interview with al-Monitor‘s Laura Rozen just before the U.S. presidential election,
Halevy defended President Obama’s willingness to negotiate with Iran as ” very courageous.”

. Ismail Coovadia also rejected a gift of 18 trees planted in his name by the Jewish National Fund, a body that has played an important role in the displacement of Palestinians.

Not many countries find ambassadors talking of their policies in terms of apartheid, but coming from a senior South African diplomat, the charge stings all the more.

It is a reflection of how South African politicians and civil society have increasingly embraced solidarity with Palestinians and taken the lead with regards to Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS)-related initiatives.

Yitzhak Tabenkin another Jew that admired Hitler.

What Israeli Historians Say About 1948 Ethnic Cleansing
    By Charley Reese

In an article in the Ha’aretz newspaper, Danny Rabinovitz wrote,
“What happened to the Palestinians in 1948 is Israel’s original sin…
    Between the 1950s and 1976,
the state systematically confiscated most of the land of its remaining Palestinian citizens.”

    Shahak stated in his article,
“In this context let me mention the pioneering work of Erskin Childers [Irish journalist].
Childers was first to show that the Zionist claim that Arab propaganda had called on the Palestinians to run away from their homes was a gross lie.
He inspected all broadcasts [the BBC recorded them and kept transcripts as did the American government] of the Arab radios of the time to find that no such call had ever been made.”

Finally, this quote from the diary of Yitzhak Tabenkin, a charismatic leader of the kibbutz movement. In his diary, Tabenkin stated,

“the ideals of Hitler which I like:
    ethnic homogeneity, the possibility of exchange of ethnic minorities;
the transfers of ethnic groups for the sake of an international order which for me are a particularly valuable feature.”

No wonder some people prefer myth to truth.

"We fear that this report, if approved, will place the two-state solution, and the prestige of Israel as a democratic member of the international community, in peril.”

The Palestinian-Israeli conflict is not just an issue of military occupation and Israel is not a country that was established “normally” and happened to occupy another country in 1967.

Palestinians are not struggling for a “state” but for freedom, liberation and equality, just like we were struggling for freedom in South Africa.

In yet another post Monday, Tequila, 32, urged her readers to put aside their hatred.

“I never said I hated anyone, but just because I feel sympathy, compassion, and forgiveness for others such as Hitler means I am now a monster?

All for trying to open your eyes to the truth that Hitler was NOT as bad as he was painted out to be?” she asked.

    3. The CIA says this …

Israeli security controls imposed since the end of the second intifada have degraded economic conditions in the Gaza Strip, the smaller of the two areas comprising the Palestinian territories. Israeli-imposed border closures, which became more restrictive after HAMAS seized control of the territory in June 2007, have resulted in high unemployment, elevated poverty rates, and a sharp contraction of the private sector that had relied primarily on export markets. The population depends on government spending - by both the Palestinian Authority and HAMAS's de facto government - and humanitarian assistance. Changes to Israeli restrictions on imports in 2010 resulted in a rebound in some economic activity, but regular exports from Gaza still are not permitted. Standard-of-living measures remain below levels seen in the mid-1990s.

    11. For me, the Jew that I am, Jerusalem is above politics. It is mentioned more than six hundred times in Scripture—and not a single time in the Koran. Its presence in Jewish history is overwhelming. There is no more moving prayer in Jewish history than the one expressing our yearning to return to Jerusalem. To many theologians, it IS Jewish history, to many poets, a source of inspiration. It belongs to the Jewish people and is much more than a city, it is what binds one Jew to another in a way that remains hard to explain. When a Jew visits Jerusalem for the first time, it is not the first time; it is a homecoming. The first song I heard was my mother’s lullaby about and for Jerusalem. Its sadness and its joy are part of our collective memory.
Since King David took Jerusalem as his capital, Jews have dwelled inside its walls with only two interruptions; when Roman invaders forbade them access to the city and again, when under Jordanian occupation, Jews, regardless of nationality, were refused entry into the old Jewish quarter to meditate and pray at the Wall, the last vestige of Solomon’s temple. It is important to remember: had Jordan not joined Egypt and Syria in the war against Israel, the old city of Jerusalem would still be Arab. Clearly, while Jews were ready to die for Jerusalem they would not kill for Jerusalem.
Today, for the first time in history, Jews, Christians and Muslims all may freely worship at their shrines. And, contrary to certain media reports, Jews, Christians and Muslims ARE allowed to build their homes anywhere in the city. The anguish over Jerusalem is not about real estate but about memory.

    5. Israel Pays Students For Pro-Israeli Social Media Propaganda

The move was publicised in a statement from Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office, the Associated Press reported. Students will receive scholarships to "engage international audiences online" and combat anti-Semitism and calls to boycott Israel, it was alleged.

In 2012, a Palestinian-run blog reported similar arrangements between the National Union of Israeli Students and the Israeli government. Students would be paid $2,000 to post pro-Israel messages online for five hours a week.

According to Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz, the most recent proposition is being spearheaded by Danny Seaman, who was slammed by the media for writing anti-Muslim messages on Facebook.

Students will be organised into units at each university, with a chief co-ordinator who receives a full scholarship, three desk co-ordinators for language, graphics and research who receive lesser scholarships and students termed “activists” who will receive a “minimal scholarship”, the Independent reported.

BILLIONS for the welfare queens of the world...

Since 2008, the EU's largest program in PA territorry has been PEGASE DFS, which provided approximately $1.4 billion (1 billion euros) in funding from 2008 to 2012. PEGASE DFS seeks to help the PA to meet its obligations to civil servants, pensioners and vulnerable families, maintain essential public services and improve public finances.
“While the Commission and European External Action Service (EEAS) have succeeded in implementing the support to the Palestinian Authority in difficult circumstances, there are a number of aspects of the current approach that are increasingly in need of an overhaul” stated Wessberg. “Although some important results have been achieved, there is a need for major revisions such as encouraging the PA to undertake more reforms, notably in relation to its civil service. Furthermore, a way needs to be found to bring Israel to take the necessary steps to help ensure that PEGASE DFS is effective”.
The European Union has provided more than $7.7 billion (5.6 billion euros) in assistance to the Palestinian people since 1994.
The report recommends that an agreement be reached with the PA for the funding of salaries and pensions from PEGASE DFS for civil servants in Gaza to be discontinued and redirected to Judea and Samaria.
It also recommends that Israel be pressed to find ways to make PEGASE more effective. In this, it is reminiscent of a Dutch EU report also released Wednesday, which blames Israel for the fact that Palestinian institutions are not democratic enough.

A statement Wednesday from the South African Police Service said the robbery of Tutu's home in Cape Town happened between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Tuesday. That was the day the Nobel Peace Prize laureate and foe of apartheid spoke at the memorial service at a soccer stadium in Soweto township of Johannesburg.

The 82-year-old Tutu had his home robbed in August as he and his wife slept inside. Both were unhurt.

(CNN) -- Add Heart to the list of bands that are bowing out of a show at SeaWorld because of the CNN documentary "Blackfish."

  26. The Documentary Blackfish Is Still Creating Waves at SeaWorld

The rock band Heart joins a expanding group of musical artists who’ve cancelled scheduled performances at SeaWorld — they’ve all cited by the documentary Blackfish, which depicts the dark side of orcas living in captivity at the marine park, for leading them to this decision.

    ---

Then, on Dec. 9, long-time animal rights advocate Joan Jett sent SeaWorld a cease-and-desist letter asking the park to stop playing her 1975 track “I Love Rock’n'Roll”, writing, “I’m among the millions who saw Blackfish and am sickened that my music was blasted without my permission at sound-sensitive marine mammals.”

The documentary centers on the 2010 death of SeaWorld trainer Dawn Brancheau by an orca named Tilikum, as well as the practice of keeping such whales in captivity. As Mary Pols notes in her review of the film for TIME , “it’s a troubling and crushingly sad tale.” Even the trailer is upsetting:

The question though is whether Snowden is a whistleblower or a free lance spy.

If he exposed 'illicit' activity then he would be a whistleblower.
For the activity to be illicit, who decides that, if not a Court?

If the activity he reported upon was not illicit, just unsavory and clandestine, then he is a spy.

That is the crux of the issue, one you obviously wish to evade or at least ignore

    el auténtico anónimo

Your post and the assumptions you posit are just plain silly, rat. It appears to come from a stunted definition of both whistleblower and illicit and the false dilemma you offer of whistleblower vs spy.

    As noted here,

    il•lic•it
ɪˈlɪs ɪtShow Spelled [ih-lis-it] Show IPA
    adjective
    1. not legally permitted or authorized; unlicensed; unlawful.
    2. disapproved of or not permitted for moral or ethical reasons.

the word illicit can have moral and ethical aspects to it as well as legal.

As for whistleblower, here is a simple definition from the Legal Dictionary.

The disclosure by a person, usually an employee in a government agency or private enterprise, to the public or to those in authority, of mismanagement, corruption, illegality, or some other wrongdoing.

Here is a composite definition of whistleblower taken from combined state, federal and international cases:

An employee who discloses information that s/he reasonably believes is evidence of illegality, gross waste or fraud, mismanagement, abuse of power, general wrongdoing, or a substantial and specific danger to public health and safety. Typically, whistleblowers speak out to parties that can influence and rectify the situation. These parties include the media, organizational managers, hotlines, or Congressional members/staff, to name a few.

The Federal Whistleblower Protection Act protects "any disclosure" that a covered employee reasonably believes evidences "any violation of any law, rule, or regulation," or "gross mismanagement, a gross waste of funds, and abuse of authority, or a substantial and specific danger to public health or safety."

    As Deuce might say, QED.

However, since you likely will quibble with that, let me say that my main argument revolves around your legal argument that the courts would need to rule as to whether the material revealed showed illicit activity before it could be released.

Your position is absurd and childish. To assume that had Snowden gone through normal channels we would now know about the governmental abuses of power the world is currently talking about is ridiculous. We cannot ignore comparing Snowden to the Daniel Ellsberg (the classic whistleblower) experience where Ellsberg reported the information to Senator Fullbright two years (and 9,000 American deaths) prior to reporting it to the Times. The end result of his going through channels? Zip. When the Director if National Intelligence blatantly lies to Congress what do you think the chances of Snowden info going public would have been? When court proceedings are secret, when their laws and the rulings on those laws are secret, what do think the chances of getting a fair hearing would be? If you actually believe what you wrote above you are simply a naïf.

My main argument is that without Snowden's whistleblowing there would now be no debate over the government's actions. No one would be aware of the abuse. There are many other reasons of course. Some of them are outlined in the following paper.

    https://www.aclu.org/blog/free-speech-national-security/edward-snowden-whistleblower

The country should be grateful to Edward Snowden for whistleblowing.

It does seem that "whistleblower" is an amorphous term, in a Humpty Dumpty World.

Using the definition you have supplied, I do not see where Mr Snowden could no be described as both a whistleblower and a free lance spy.

There is a fine line 'tween journalist and spy,
as the majority of 'intelligence' is derived from 'open' sources.

      Well, no, rat.

After mine and T's initial exchange, you posed a few rhetorical questions scattered over a couple posts which I ignored.

In your third post, you ascribed a ridiculous translation to my words which I responded to in a post where I corrected you and explained my real position.

At that point, you changed direction and said you weren't really interested in the whole 'felon' issue anyway and instead said the real question regards whether Snowden is a whistleblower or a spy. Which is somewhat strange since the issue of him being a spy was never brought up in any of the previous posts.

In the same post you then go on to accuse me of evading or ignoring not only the rhetorical questions you had posted before but also an issue you had not brought up until that post.

Then I repeat that I think Snowden is a whistleblower, you accuse me of not providing any evidence. You dumb shit, you never asked me to provide any evidence. You asked me what I thought Snowden was.

Now, when I make the case that Snowden is a whistleblower, after you have harassed me with your ridiculous questions and posts for the length of this particular blog stream, you come back and say 'well, gee, I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder.

This after assuming you pathological conceit of speaking of 'el dumbshit' in the third person.

    Canada is getting uppity.

Now, right before Christmas, they want the North Pole.

The Great White North is looking to expand its horizons.

On Friday, the Canadian government was expected to submit an application to the UN Commission tasked with evaluating which countries can claim exclusive rights to resources — namely oil and gas — found in waterways far beyond their borders. Instead, however, the country made a surprising pivot: at the insistence of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, they submitted a partial application rather than a full one. That's because, according to The Globe and Mail, Harper wants government scientists to seek additional data that would support a more expansive claim — one that includes the North Pole.

"Amid Slow Recovery, One Industry Can’t Hire Fast Enough

To understand the economic impact on the country, consider the effects so far on Pennsylvania: Between the fourth quarters of 2009 and 2012, jobs in energy exploration and extraction—from roustabouts to managers, highly trained inspectors to skilled engineers—increased 149 percent, rising from 12,188 to 30,369, according to the Three Rivers Workforce Investment Board.

The average salary for jobs in these "core" industries was $83,100, the board said—significantly above the national average.

How Pennsylvania is helping to fill half a million skilled jobs

The shale gas industry is a big part of what's driving the U.S. recovery. Unconventional gas activity supported more than one million jobs in 2010, according to IHS Global Insight.

That's almost twice the level of employment in the U.S. airline industry. And the figure is projected to grow by 500,000—to nearly 1.5 million jobs—by 2015."

  31. DEA Administrator Michele M. Leonhart and Preet Bharara, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, today announced that IOANNIS VIGLAKIS, a/k/a “Pablo,” pled guilty yesterday in Manhattan federal court to attempting to provide material support to the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (“FARC”), a Colombian terrorist organization.
VIGLAKIS, a citizen of Greece, was arrested in Panama City, Panama, in coordination with Panamanian authorities during August 2012. He waived extradition and was subsequently turned over to the custody of the United States. VIGLAKIS pled guilty before U.S. District Judge Katherine B. Forrest.
“This investigation clearly demonstrates DEA’s unique ability to disrupt and dismantle the arms-trafficking networks that supply weapons to the most significant global narco-terror organizations," Leonhart said. "DEA will continue to aggressively pursue international arms dealers and narco-terrorists who are focused on harming our nation's security.”
Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said: “By providing functioning rocket-propelled grenade launchers and other military-grade weapons to an individual he believed to be a FARC associate, Ioannis Viglakis was attempting to arm a known terrorist organization that he understood would use those weapons against Americans and Colombians.”
According to the Indictment previously unsealed in this case:
Beginning in November 2011, VIGLAKIS had a series of meetings with a DEA confidential source (the “CS”) who represented himself to be an associate of the FARC. During those meetings, which took place in Europe and Central America, the CS informed VIGLAKIS that he was seeking weapons for use by the FARC to attack American forces in Colombia.
VIGLAKIS offered to provide the FARC with functional, bona fide, military-grade weapons – including assault rifles, rocket-propelled grenade (“RPG”) launchers and surface-to-air missiles – in exchange for cocaine and cash. During the meetings, VIGLAKIS and the CS also discussed the FARC’s use of these weapons to fight the Colombian and American governments, including by shooting down American aircraft in Colombia.
During the following months, VIGLAKIS indicated that he would provide the CS with several RPG launchers as a sample. On July 18, 2012, VIGLAKIS successfully arranged for the delivery in Europe of six live RPGs and three working RPG launchers, which were received by a DEA undercover agent.
VIGLAKIS, 53, pled guilty to one count of attempting to provide material support to the FARC. He faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison, and is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Forrest on April 11, 2014, at 11:00 a.m.
