The American whistleblower was the overwhelming favorite for the honor, as voted on by readers of the British newspaper.
The Guardian newspaper has named U.S. whistleblower Edward Snowden its person of the year.
This was the second year running that The Guardian's top newsmaker honor went to an American whistleblower. Chelsea Manning, who was given a 35-year jail sentence in July for violations of the Espionage Act and other offenses connected to his leaking of classified documents to WikiLeaks, was The Guardian's Person of the Year 2012.
Snowden's revelations about the NSA's extensive programs of telephone and Internet surveillance has been front page news for The Guardian for months. The left-of-center newspaper was itself a key player in the revelations. In May, after leaving the U.S. for Hong Kong, Snowden met with Guardian journalists Glenn Greenwald and Ewen MacAskill to hand over the documents that exposed the NSA programs. Snowden then went into exile, eventually seeking asylum in Russia.
The Guardian said its readers were impressed by "his personal sacrifice, as much as his revelations."
He's not a "whistleblower" he's a felon who did more damage to US national security than Jonathan Pollard, even.

This standard certainly applies to individuals, in the United States.

Not really. There is a difference between conducting criminal activity and being convicted of conducting illegal activity. One is a moral issue, the other legal. IMO, there is a distinction between an illegal act itself and what you call the perpetrator of that act prior to him being convicted of the crime. I have no doubt that what Snowden did was a criminal act; however, he has not been tried even in absentia. So at this point, can we actually call him a felon until he is tried and found guilty? I don't think so. But maybe I'm wrong. I wouldn't get into an extended argument over it. That's my opinion.
Also IMO, the same standard should be held regarding the government. For instance, James Clapper lied to Congress under oath. Perjury is a felony under federal law. I am assuming (perhaps not a good idea) therefore that lying to Congress under oath is a felony. It's pretty obvious he committed the crime, he admitted to it. However, I might think him a slime bag and a criminal, but I wouldn't call him a felon until he was charged and convicted.
Perhaps, I am parsing it too closely.

Snowden didn’t leak through WikiLeaks — in some trouble by the time he appeared — but I do not see how his actions can be anything other than a product of the process and context that WikiLeaks put in place. Nor would it have happened had WL not adopted a specific strategy in contrast to the usual “petty” libertarianism of the hackerati — one of mass leaks, audacious and visible challenge to the state.

Why that matters — quite aside from credit-where-due, etc — is that Snowden’s acts can seem as if they are in contrast to the WikiLeaks process, since Snowden’s act appears to be a noble and individual act, done without context, save the conscience. Some level of individual will was required, of course, a final decision to transgress — but it occurs within a context, and a way of understanding how the world works.
The better theory gives the better picture, and the better picture allows for more successful action. If there seems a long way to go in the struggle against this new totalitarian system, it is worth stepping back and reminding oneself that this is the NSA one has challenged, the NSA — once as all-encompassing as apartheid, and hopefully, in its current form, destined for the same fate.

DeleteYou seem to be surprised to hear that there are still problems of 1948 to be solved, the most important component of which is the right to return of Palestinian refugees.
The Palestinian-Israeli conflict is not just an issue of military occupation and Israel is not a country that was established “normally” and happened to occupy another country in 1967.
Palestinians are not struggling for a “state” but for freedom, liberation and equality, just like we were struggling for freedom in South Africa.

The move was publicised in a statement from Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office, the Associated Press reported. Students will receive scholarships to "engage international audiences online" and combat anti-Semitism and calls to boycott Israel, it was alleged.
In 2012, a Palestinian-run blog reported similar arrangements between the National Union of Israeli Students and the Israeli government. Students would be paid $2,000 to post pro-Israel messages online for five hours a week.
According to Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz, the most recent proposition is being spearheaded by Danny Seaman, who was slammed by the media for writing anti-Muslim messages on Facebook.
Students will be organised into units at each university, with a chief co-ordinator who receives a full scholarship, three desk co-ordinators for language, graphics and research who receive lesser scholarships and students termed “activists” who will receive a “minimal scholarship”, the Independent reported.

PEGASE DFS seeks to help the PA to meet its obligations to civil servants, pensioners and vulnerable families, maintain essential public services and improve public finances.
“While the Commission and European External Action Service (EEAS) have succeeded in implementing the support to the Palestinian Authority in difficult circumstances, there are a number of aspects of the current approach that are increasingly in need of an overhaul” stated Wessberg. “Although some important results have been achieved, there is a need for major revisions such as encouraging the PA to undertake more reforms, notably in relation to its civil service. Furthermore, a way needs to be found to bring Israel to take the necessary steps to help ensure that PEGASE DFS is effective”.
The European Union has provided more than $7.7 billion (5.6 billion euros) in assistance to the Palestinian people since 1994.
The report recommends that an agreement be reached with the PA for the funding of salaries and pensions from PEGASE DFS for civil servants in Gaza to be discontinued and redirected to Judea and Samaria.
It also recommends that Israel be pressed to find ways to make PEGASE more effective. In this, it is reminiscent of a Dutch EU report also released Wednesday, which blames Israel for the fact that Palestinian institutions are not democratic enough.

However, since you likely will quibble with that, let me say that my main argument revolves around your legal argument that the courts would need to rule as to whether the material revealed showed illicit activity before it could be released.
Your position is absurd and childish. To assume that had Snowden gone through normal channels we would now know about the governmental abuses of power the world is currently talking about is ridiculous. We cannot ignore comparing Snowden to the Daniel Ellsberg (the classic whistleblower) experience where Ellsberg reported the information to Senator Fullbright two years (and 9,000 American deaths) prior to reporting it to the Times. The end result of his going through channels? Zip. When the Director if National Intelligence blatantly lies to Congress what do you think the chances of Snowden info going public would have been? When court proceedings are secret, when their laws and the rulings on those laws are secret, what do think the chances of getting a fair hearing would be? If you actually believe what you wrote above you are simply a naïf.
My main argument is that without Snowden's whistleblowing there would now be no debate over the government's actions. No one would be aware of the abuse. There are many other reasons of course. Some of them are outlined in the following paper.

In your third post, you ascribed a ridiculous translation to my words which I responded to in a post where I corrected you and explained my real position.
At that point, you changed direction and said you weren't really interested in the whole 'felon' issue anyway and instead said the real question regards whether Snowden is a whistleblower or a spy. Which is somewhat strange since the issue of him being a spy was never brought up in any of the previous posts.
In the same post you then go on to accuse me of evading or ignoring not only the rhetorical questions you had posted before but also an issue you had not brought up until that post.

Leonhart and Preet Bharara, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, today announced that IOANNIS VIGLAKIS, a/k/a “Pablo,” pled guilty yesterday in Manhattan federal court to attempting to provide material support to the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (“FARC”), a Colombian terrorist organization.
ReplyDeleteVIGLAKIS, a citizen of Greece, was arrested in Panama City, Panama, in coordination with Panamanian authorities during August 2012. He waived extradition and was subsequently turned over to the custody of the United States. VIGLAKIS pled guilty before U.S. District Judge Katherine B. Forrest.
“This investigation clearly demonstrates DEA’s unique ability to disrupt and dismantle the arms-trafficking networks that supply weapons to the most significant global narco-terror organizations," Leonhart said. "DEA will continue to aggressively pursue international arms dealers and narco-terrorists who are focused on harming our nation's security.”
Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said: “By providing functioning rocket-propelled grenade launchers and other military-grade weapons to an individual he believed to be a FARC associate, Ioannis Viglakis was attempting to arm a known terrorist organization that he understood would use those weapons against Americans and Colombians.”
According to the Indictment previously unsealed in this case:
Beginning in November 2011, VIGLAKIS had a series of meetings with a DEA confidential source (the “CS”) who represented himself to be an associate of the FARC. During those meetings, which took place in Europe and Central America, the CS informed VIGLAKIS that he was seeking weapons for use by the FARC to attack American forces in Colombia.
VIGLAKIS offered to provide the FARC with functional, bona fide, military-grade weapons – including assault rifles, rocket-propelled grenade (“RPG”) launchers and surface-to-air missiles – in exchange for cocaine and cash. During the meetings, VIGLAKIS and the CS also discussed the FARC’s use of these weapons to fight the Colombian and American governments, including by shooting down American aircraft in Colombia.
During the following months, VIGLAKIS indicated that he would provide the CS with several RPG launchers as a sample. On July 18, 2012, VIGLAKIS successfully arranged for the delivery in Europe of six live RPGs and three working RPG launchers, which were received by a DEA undercover agent.
VIGLAKIS, 53, pled guilty to one count of attempting to provide material support to the FARC. He faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison, and is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Forrest on April 11, 2014, at 11:00 a.m.
