MORE SHUTDOWN THEATER, COMING TO YOU VIA ARMED FORCES RADIO
Barack Obama’s not just keeping elderly World War II veterans away from their memorial. He’s keeping current military forces away from their football and baseball games, too. ”Due to the government shutdown, the Defense Department can only provide limited overseas television, radio, print, and web services,” the Armed Forces Network website announced.
But rest assured there’s money to keep Camp David – the presidential retreat Obama usually disdains in favor of more expensive remote destinations, although he says he frequently shoots skeet there – up and running, according to the Washington Examiner.
Meanwhile, that World War II memorial is blocked off with even more barricades… and now they’re wired shut. Vice President Joe Biden offered personal thanks to the Park Service employee who stood her ground against the veterans. Suffer the wrath of an aroused bureaucracy, war heroes!
Shutdown Theater takes to the seas in Florida, as Obama’s troops in the National Park Service informed charter fishing boats “they are not permitted to take clients fishing in Florida Bay until the feds get back to work,” according to the Miami Herald. “That means that more than 1,100 square miles of prime fishing is off limits, between the southern tip of the mainland to the Keys, until further notice.” The ban also extends to tour guides. No paddling until Obama gets his money! Doubtless the Administration will hire as many people as it takes to enforce the “shutdown.”
Not everyone in the Park Service is comfortable with their new role as shutdown shock troops. ”It’s a cheap way to deal with the situation,’ one ranger is quoted as saying by the Washington Times. ”We’ve been told to make life as difficult for people as we can. It’s disgusting.”
Some government websites are rather… conspicuously closed. For example, if you visit the Federal Trade Commission website, everything that would normally be running more or less automatically has been blocked off behind a page that says, “Unfortunately, the Federal Trade Commission is closed due to the government shutdown.” As anyone who has tried to sign up for ObamaCare knows, a truly non-functional web site responds with an error message.
A senior Administration official pronounced the White House satisfied with its efforts to discipline the unruly populace, saying “it doesn’t really matter to us” how long the shutdown goes on, “because what matters is the end result.” That’s an interesting companion piece with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s callous dismissal of pediatric cancer patients. Who cares how long people are hurting, as long as the media makes sure they’re angry with Republicans, and the ruling class continues to enjoy its perks and privileges?
White House spokesman Jay Carney tumbled out of the Administration clown car to “utterly disavow” this remark, while House Speaker John Boehner growled, “This isn’t some damn game. The American people don’t want their government shut down, and neither do I. All we’re asking for is to sit down and have a discussion, and to reopen the government and bring fairness to the American people under Obamacare. It’s as simple as that. But it all has to begin with a simple discussion.”
The White House is openly soliciting “how has the government shutdown affected you?” stories on its blog, while good old Harry Reid mercilessly strangles every bill that would fund government services. Sounds like a game to me, and not a very good one.
Update: When Shutdown Theater came to Wisconsin, Governor Scott Walker said “no.” The federal National Park Service ordered Wisconsin officials to close several parks, including some areas that are actually owned by the state, but Walker’s administration refused. ”All state parks, trails, and other recreational properties are open and not affected by the federal government’s budget problems,” proclaimed the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
Update: Rep. Lee Terry (R-NE) accuses President Obama of illegally furloughing two thousand civilian defense contractors at Offutt Air Force Base, a violation of the Pay Our Military Act that was duly passed and signed last week.
Funny, I thought Obama was big on obeying “the settled law of the land.” Oh, wait, silly me – he thinks you little people should have to obey those laws, not His August Majesty.
All the security and still a crazy new mother with a baby become the scene of the obscene. A federal shoot out while tourists mill around the grounds amidst robo-cops. It is the theater of the absurd. Convert the White House and the capitol building grounds into an American Versailles and create some jobs by moving the entire federal artifice to Detroit for 15 years and then on a fifteen year schedule move it again to the next derelict shit hole on the list.
ReplyDeleteWe justify a new Olympics site on a four year schedule, let’s try a new seat of government on a 15 year cycle. Forget the pseudo Rome theme and build the true industrial business parks that it really is. Place the President in private secure grounds and cut the office and the egoist in the office down to a manageable size.

ReplyDeleteSomeone is trying to destroy any rapprochement between the US and Iran
ReplyDeleteAt least four people have been arrested in Iran for trying to sabotage a nuclear site, an Iranian official has been quoted by the country's media as saying.
The head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation, Ali Akbar Salehi, said officials had monitored and then arrested a "number of saboteurs" before they could carry out their plan.
"Four of these individuals were caught red-handed and their interrogations are ongoing," he said, according to the Mehr news agency on Sunday. He did not identify which nuclear site they were planning to damage or when those detained were arrested.
Israel, widely believed to be the region's only nuclear-armed state, sees Iran's atomic work as a military threat and has said it will attack Iran's nuclear sites if it does not end its programme. Iran says its nuclear work is purely peaceful.
Iran accuses Israel and the west of being behind the assassination of Iranian nuclear scientists and of trying to damage its programme in other ways, such as by cyber-attacks.

Iran has arrested four people for trying to sabotage a nuclear site, a senior official says.
The activities of the four had been monitored for some time, said the head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation, quoted by local media, said
They had been caught red-handed, Ali Akbar Salehi said.
Mr Salehi did not give names or nationalities, or identify which site was the intended target.
The announcement comes amid new hopes of resolving Iran's standoff with the West over its nuclear programme.
Just over a week ago, Iran's President Hassan Rouhani spoke to US President Barack Obama by phone in a bid to ease tension over Iran's nuclear programme.
Amir Azimi
BBC Persian
Ayatollah Khamenei, in a speech on Saturday, gave more weight to supporting President Rouhani's diplomatic manoeuvres in New York, rather than criticising him.
The leader reassured the government of his trust in them but also hinted at disapproval over parts of Mr Rouhani's action.
The tone of the criticism was soft - he didn't condemn what happened, he just said some parts were out of place. Many observers see this as a message directed at the domestic hardliners, who oppose direct talks with US officials.
The message could be that the leader is on top of the situation and monitoring events very closely - and that there is no need for them to be worried.
They were the first talks between Iranian and US leaders in more than three decades.
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei endorsed Mr Rouhani's overtures to the US on Saturday.
"We support the diplomatic initiative of the government and attach importance to its activities in this trip," he said on his website.
Ayatollah Khamenei said that "some of what happened on the New York trip was not appropriate", without being specific.
"We are pessimistic towards the Americans and do not put any trust in them," he said.
"The American government is untrustworthy, supercilious and unreasonable, and breaks its promises."
Substantive nuclear negotiations between Iran and international powers are due to take place next week and Mr Rouhani has pledged to bring a plan to the meeting.
Iran wants the lifting of UN sanctions, which were imposed over concerns that it is seeking to build nuclear weapons clandestinely - an allegation Tehran denies.
Coincidence that a week before negotiations begin, another scientist is assassinated and an arrest is made of four people trying to sabotage a nuclear facility?
ReplyDeleteHow many Iranian scientists will you concede were murdered by Iran? Maybe they were suspected of being moles or spies for the west?
DeleteIs it not possible or plausible that it's Iran whacking it's own to keep it's own in line?
Here is something choice:

During Thursday’s Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, Sen. Marco Rubio (R., FL) asked Under Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, what country Iran’s nuclear program resembles.
Sherman responded Iran is “in many ways more dangerous than any country who has the ability to reprocess, enrich or has nuclear weapons or seeks to get nuclear weapons.”
Who is Wendy and where did she get her expertise on nuclear weaponry development?
Let’s take a peek:
Wendy Ruth Sherman (born 1949) is a United States diplomat, government official, non-profit manager, and adviser to politicians and business. She currently serves as Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, the third highest ranking position in the U.S. Department of State. During the Clinton Administration, she served as Counselor of the United States Department of State and Special Advisor to the President and Secretary of State and North Korea Policy Coordinator…
…Sherman attended Smith College from 1967 to 1969, and received her degree from Boston University in 1971. In 1976, she earned a Master’s degree in Social Work, Phi Kappa Phi from the University of Maryland…
…Early in her career, Sherman worked in a variety of positions in both government and non-profit organizations: chief of staff for three years for then Congresswoman Barbara Mikulski, campaign manager for Mikulski's first successful Senate campaign, Special Secretary for Children and Youth in Maryland (a cabinet-level position), Director of Maryland's Office of Child Welfare, supervising protective services, foster care, adoptions, and group homes.
Sherman directed Campaign '88 for the Democratic National Committee, where she oversaw field and political operations, communications, Congressional relations, constituency operations, issue development and coordination with all federal, state and local campaigns during the 1988 general election.
From 1991 to 1993, Sherman specialized in strategic communications as a partner in the political and media consulting firm of' Doak, Shrum, Harris and Sherman. Prior to that, she directed EMILY's List, the largest financial and political resource for pro-choice Democratic women candidates. She is credited with the organization’s strategic development that led to groundbreaking numbers of candidates in 1992.

DeleteWomen that crash the White House gates and pyromaniacs that set fires on the Mall
Finally, he returned to the National Mall and, just before 4:30 p.m., aimed his camera east, toward the Capitol
“That was the last stop that I had planned,” he said.
As he was shooting, a man appeared in the center of his frame, standing near Seventh Street, with his back to Soto. He poured gasoline over his body from a canister, and, before igniting the fuel with a lighter, gave the Capitol a crisp military salute.
Soto’s camera kept clicking as flames engulfed the man’s body and passersby rushed to his aid.
The Fascist Farmer and other supporters of the Government shutdown demand safety and security from fear.

When Fascist Farmer Robert demands safety and security from fear, President Obama will oblige.
There were no such vandal attacks in Washington DC prior to the shutdown of the government and a lessening of the Federal employee presence in DC.
DeleteThere is probably a correlation between the "Shutdown" and these vandal events on the symbols of freedom on the Mall
The President must "Connect the Dots" ...
He must keep US safe.
Fascist Farmer Robert demands it!
Desert rat, do you really equate the woman's behavior with vandalism? My impression is that her motive wasn't simply the defacement of property. By using such a misnomer you trivialize the response of law enforcement, who HAD to assume the worst, given her targeting of both the White House and the Capitol. You know better than that.
DeleteMiriam's intentions will never be known, allen.
DeleteOnly her actions stand in testimony.
Both the immolation on the Mall and Miriams attempt to crash the gate were illegal activities.
The lack of proper security, in DC may well have led to these miscreants ability to take their actions.
Vandal - One who willfully or maliciously defaces or destroys public or private property.
That is the result of their actions. The destruction of public property. At the White House and on the Mall.
It was the least offensive term I could think of, to describe both the assault on the White House gate and burning the lawn on the Mall.

A narcissistic sociopath is someone with a combination of narcissistic personality disorder and definitive behavioral signs of sociopathy. People with narcissism are characterized by their excessive and persistent need for others' admiration and positive reinforcement. They generally have grandiose opinions of themselves and believe they are superior to other people. Narcissists are also frequently convinced that they are above the normal responsibilities and obligations of everyday life, so they usually have significant difficulties maintaining employment or relationships as a result. The narcissistic sociopath has this type of personality along with a noticeable lack of regard for the rights of others and a tendency to regularly violate those rights.
DeleteOne noted difference between a narcissistic sociopath and people with narcissism alone is that the narcissist with the sociopathy reacts strongly and sometimes even violently to negative feedback. True sociopaths generally do not respond to criticism or care what others may think of them. A narcissistic sociopath is unable to tolerate criticism and needs constant praise, as well as deference from other people. Many with this condition present themselves in the best light possible and are able to easily charm others to gain their trust.

heav·en

1.perfect dwelling place after death: a place or condition of supreme happiness and peace where good people are believed to go after death, and, especially in Christianity, where God and the angels are believed to dwell
2.blissful experience: an experience of blissful happiness
3.sky: the sky as seen from Earth

.
DeleteWords do have meaning, rat; but then so does context.
If you assume 'Heaven' was capitalized because it was used as the proper name for a specific place, how do you explain 'Urges' and 'Fireballs' being capitalized?
Occam's Razor would suggest the phrase, as presented, was merely a literary affectation used by our resident poet.
.
The method of destruction, allen, makes all the difference, i do believe.
DeleteAs to Q, and his defense of our resident Farming Fascist, he may have a point.
But it is a difference without distinction.
He chose to use ambiguous terminology, when the discussion was centered around celestial mechanics.

In the Japanese case it was suicide by USAAF.
DeleteWishing for a tsunami to wreck havoc is exactly the same wishing to wreck havoc via a weapon. ReplyDeleteMove the place of government from DC, and relocate on a rotating basis to areas of the United States in need of economic stimulus, may be sound.
The counties around the Federal District are now some of the richest in the nation. So the stimulative effect of the Federal government is clear and well illustrated.
The White House, Executive Office Building, the Capital building and the Supreme Court edifice could all become museums, tourist attractions of historical distinction. fitting right in with the other monuments, museums and reminders of the glory days of the Republic.
The Congress, SCOTUS and the President and his entourage could become a "Movable Feast", traveling the country, setting up shop, doing their business and then returning to their homes at the end of the legislative session, the judicial calendar or in the President's case, whenever he wants.
As Mr GW Bush so aptly illustrated, the President could do his job as effectively from Crawford, Texas as he could from Washington DC.
To disperse the Government, a security measure of merit, as well.
DeleteGet all those folks out of a single targeting area, out of the Kill Box, as it were.
Dispersed and maintaining their interval, that would increase the survivability of the government in case of a nuclear, biological or chemical attack.
To keep the Federal government in a 10 mile square district, an 18th century solution that in the day of digital communication and air travel is no longer expedient, safe or secure.
We must disperse the Federal government to save it!
The Museum District of Columbia could then be returned to the legal jurisdiction of Virginia and Maryland, the people of the District would no longer be disenfranchised in the Presidential or Congressional elections.
DeleteIt would be a move towards greater political representation and accountability
it would be an economic stimulant to depressed areas of the nation

Have we reached a point of no return in this government shutdown? Can either side back away without the risk of reaping the public's wrath? Today I see that the Speaker has decided to stand and fight. By this I hope he means, among other things, that the House will continue to attempt to pass continuing resolutions and bills, leaving it to the Senate and White House to kill. If Mr. Boehner would do this on a daily basis, making it a big production, things would start getting uncomfortable for the Dems.

Destruction of Syria's Chemical Weapons Begins
A team of international inspectors has begun the huge task of destroying Syria's stockpile of chemical weapons and the facilities used to make them.
Authorities said Sunday is the first day of the dismantling process, but gave no details where the inspectors went after they left their Damascus hotel.
The team consists of experts from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in The Hague and United Nations personnel assisting them. They arrived in Damascus last week.
The mission, agreed to by Washington and Moscow after an August chemical weapons attack in Damascus prompted U.S. threats of air strikes against the Syrian government, is expected to continue until at least mid-2014.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said last month that he would comply with the operation.
Developed during the 1980s and 1990s, Syria's chemical arsenal is believed to contain mustard gas and the nerve agents sarin, VX and tabun.
Also Sunday, U.N.-Arab League peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi urged Syria's warring parties to hold talks "without preconditions" and said he hopes negotiations could take place in Geneva in late November.

"Despite numerous checkpoints and gate agents, officials at Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport say a 9-year-old was somehow able to sneak through security and onto a Delta flight headed to Las Vegas."
That's the report from Minneapolis-St. Paul TV station KARE 11, which says the "security mishap" came Thursday when the boy sneaked into the airport and onto Delta Flight 1651 to Las Vegas.
FULL REPORT: 9-year-old sneaks onto plane at Minneapolis-St, Paul airport (KARE 11)
Pat Hogan, spokesperson for the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP), confirmed the incident to KARE, but says it wasn't the result of an airport shortcoming.
"At this point, this is a Delta and TSA issue," Hogan tells KARE. "This is a rare incident."
MSP officials say they've reviewed security footage and at this point do not believe he was carrying a boarding pass.
In a statement to KARE, Delta says: "We are investigating the incident and cooperating with the agencies involved."

Two false premises do not make a sound conclusion even if the argument follows the formula. Three, four, five, or six false premises do not all combine to make a conclusion sound...Just because an argument fits the formula, it does not necessarily make the conclusion sound. LAKEWOOD, Wash. - A Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldier was stabbed to death in a parking lot at the 12500 block of Pacific Highway Southwest around 2:30 a.m., officials say.
ReplyDelete20-year-old Tevin Geike was walking with two other white soldiers along Pacific Highway SW when a group of black men drove by and shouted a racial comment toward the soldiers, the Lakewood Police Department said.
"One of the soldiers yelled back something about the suspects treating combat soldiers with disrespect," Lt. Chris Lawler said.
The car turned around and the men confronted the soldiers, according to reports. As the verbal confrontation ensued, the driver of the vehicle realized the men were actually combat veterans and called his friends off. While the men headed back to their vehicle, one of the suspects appeared to have bumped into Geike, witnesses say.
The soldiers saw Geike fall to the ground as the car sped away. He was bleeding profusely from stab wounds and died at the scene.
"We came down here, and he was already dead in my brother's arms," said Glenn Zimmerman, a friend of Geike.
Friends say there was a party at the Biltmore Motel that evening, and Geike was gathering with family and friends after being discharged from the military. Zimmerman said Geike's contract was up, and he was celebrating serving his country.
"I don't understand how someone can do this - that man, he almost gave his life for people to enjoy the freedoms they have and he was just stabbed for no (expletive) reason," he continued.
The initial remark that started the encounter seemed derogatory in nature, said Lakewood police Lt. Chris Lawler. He said it was too early to say that race was the motivating factor, but investigators were exploring whether the killing should be classified as a hate crime.
"We are certainly considering it, for sure," Lawler said.
Police are searching for a midnight blue BMW-type sedan or VW Jetta-type car with four doors, tinted windows and stock rims, and low profile tires.
All five suspects are black men in their 20s, police say. The main suspect is believed to be in his early 20s, about 6'1", medium build, and was wearing a blue zip-up hoodie. The driver was described as having short cropped hair, and wearing a blue and white horizontal striped shirt.
Detectives were in the area Saturday looking for businesses or others who might have video from around the time of the stabbing. Lawler said the person who stabbed the soldier should come forward and show remorse now.
"He's going to get caught," Lawler said. "Nobody's going to give up until we catch up."
Good thing this crime was reported to the police.
DeleteNow that the police know of the crime, they may be able to catch the perpetrators.
Just think, if the crime had not been reported to the police ...

But no Hate Crime charges will be filed.
ReplyDeleteThere won't be enough evidence or some such shit reason.

But as one who is on our blog that did such hate crimes in central america has said, if you are not caught? it aint a crime.

What I've read is some sort of racial slut being through about by the black attackers, which I find wholly believable.
Everybody knows what the hate crimes laws are about.
Why not go to sleep somewhere yourself.
You put people to sleep here.
Then there is this interpretation of "Hate Crimes..
ReplyDeleteThe plaintiffs allege that the 2009 Hate Crimes Act was clearly intended to intimidate Christians and their religious leaders into remaining silent concerning their religious belief that homosexual conduct is sinful.
“This statute is all about elevating certain persons (homosexuals) to a protected class under federal law based on nothing more than their choice to have sex with persons of the same gender, while marginalizing strong religious opposition to this immoral choice,” states the opening brief, filed by the Thomas More Center with the Sixth Circuit.
“Under the guise of enforcing ‘niceness’ and promoting ‘tolerance,’ homosexual advocacy groups have mobilized their financial power to purchase political clout which they now use to shut down any criticism of their deviant lifestyle,” said Richard Thompson, President and Chief Counsel of TMLC. “The truth is they are one of the most intolerant groups in our society and viciously attack anyone who opposes their point of view.”
Or this view of Hate Crime legislation in the United States ...
DeleteThe federal government and nearly every state have hate crime laws, passed with the noble aim of preventing crimes motivated by bias.
But a New York Times columnist questions the wisdom of such laws, used in the prosecution of Dharun Ravi, the Rutgers University student who used a webcam to spy on his roommate during a gay romantic encounter.
The roommate later committed suicide, and Ravi faces up to 10 years in prison.
Columnist Bill Keller says he views the verdict as an attempt to use “handy bias statutes” to punish someone for an unexplained death.
“It’s not a great reach to say that Ravi faces up to 10 years in prison for being a jerk,” he writes.
Keller relies on reasoning laid out by former University of Illinois law dean Heidi Hurd, now a professor at the law school. She points out that the laws punish not only what people do, but also who people are. The laws ratchet up the penalties for crimes committed by people thought to have an evil disposition, the column says.
Keller sees the laws as ....
“something from an Orwell dystopia. Horrific crimes deserve stern justice, but don’t we want to be careful about criminalizing a defect of character?”
Iin other words ...
Just another way for government to limit Freedom and Liberty in the name of "Safety & Security"
...but don’t we want to be careful about criminalizing a defect of character?”
DeleteThat's an interesting thought.
There is just too many damn laws in the first place, imo.
“The truth is they are one of the most intolerant groups in our society and viciously attack anyone who opposes their point of view.”
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen too much evidence of that.
One man's perception of hate is another man's reasonable position.
ReplyDeleteThat is what makes "Hate Crimes" so ambiguous.
If there is an insidious crime, prosecute it to the fullest extent possible...
.... but to prosecute "Thought" puts US on a slippery slope to prosecutorial tyranny.
Very true.
DeleteHegel was NOT an anti-Semite. To the contrary, he staunchly supported Jewish emancipation and full integration into German society. His academic objective was the creation of a new philosophy to replace that of Aristotle. Unlike Marx, he was not a materialist.
ReplyDeleteNietzsche was NOT an anti-Semite. He found the age-old survival of Jews a wonder.
The work of both men was selectively utilized to deadly nefarious ends. Nietzsche's "uber mensch" was a morally superior being, not to be confused with the "master race".
As far as Nietzsche is concerned, while he was sick his sister came to his aid.
DeleteElisabeth Forster Nietzsche, she married Bernhard Förster, who was, without doubt disfavored the Judaic.
Friedrich Nietzsche, the German philosopher, was the victim of "criminally scandalous" manipulation by his anti-Semitic sister who condemned him to being considered a forerunner to the Nazis, a new book has claimed.
By David Wroe in Berlin
6:30AM GMT 19 Jan 2010
Elizabeth Förster-Nietzsche, who went on to become a prominent supporter of Adolf Hitler, systematically falsified her brother's works and letters, according to the Nietzsche Encyclopedia.
Christian Niemeyer, the publisher, said he wanted to clear the revered thinker's reputation by showing the "criminally scandalous" forgeries by his sister had tainted his reputation ever since.
"Förster-Nietzsche did everything she could – such as telling stories about Nietzsche, writing false letters in the name of her brother, and so on – to make it seem that Nietzsche had been a right-wing thinker like herself," he told The Daily Telegraph.
"It was she who created the most destructive myth of all: Nietzsche as the godfather of fascism."
The Nazis selectively used Nietzsche's writings to bolster their ideology and built a museum in Weimar to celebrate the philosopher, though it is unlikely Hitler himself read much, if any, of Nietzsche's work.
Elizabeth Förster-Nietzsche edited her brother's writings after his mental breakdown in 1889 and quickly began to add, remove and change passages to align his philosophy with her own beliefs and those of her virulent anti-Semite husband Bernhard Förster.
Along with her husband, she founded a Utopian "Aryan" colony in the Paraguyan jungle called Nueva Germania in 1887. It was a disaster: her husband committed suicide in 1889 and Förster-Nietzsche returned to Germany. When she died in 1935, Hitler attended her funeral.
While it has been known to Nietzsche scholars that Förster-Nietzsche meddled with her brother's work, particular after his death, the new encyclopedia – consisting of entries by about 150 scholars – shows the sheer breadth and depth of her forgeries as never before

DeleteFive things Bill O’Reilly gets wrong in 'Killing Jesus'
ReplyDeleteOpinion by Candida Moss, Special to CNN
(CNN)--Bill O’Reilly’s "Killing Jesus: A History" is the best-selling book in the world right now. But it’s far from flawless.
The Holy Spirit may have inspired "Killing Jesus," but he didn’t fact-check it.
Here are five ways it shows:
1. Not everything Roman historians tell you is true
Of the first 80 or so pages of "Killing Jesus," only 15 are about Jesus himself. The rest is history, biography, and politics of the ancient Mediterranean. Much of this is gleaned from Roman and Jewish historians like the imperial biographer Suetonius and the Jewish general Josephus.
These are authors that O’Reilly trusts implicitly. Maybe it’s because Suetonius reads like the National Enquirer, maybe it’s because the Romans loved eagles, but whatever the reason, O’Reilly gives them too much credit.
The Romans were fantastic record-keepers but had different standards for their history writing. O’Reilly refers to the acta diurna – a sort of proto-newspaper recording political events, marriages, and divorces that was read aloud in public – as evidence for accuracy in Roman record-keeping.
But he is wrong to see these as transparent statements of fact.
They were propagandistic: the Roman orator Cicero complains that he is misrepresented in the daily reports, and the Roman governor Pliny retells a story he had heard in which a dog jumped in the river after his deceased owner. It’s a little more Buzzfeed than Wall Street Journal.
2. Paul was not a Christian
According to O’Reilly, Paul was “a former Pharisee who became a convert to Christianity.” Paul was not a Christian; he was a Jew who moved from one branch of Judaism to another.
He never uses the word Christian. It seems that the early members of the Jesus movement referred to themselves as followers of “the Way".
.”
DeleteThe word Christian wasn’t used until the end of the first century C.E. The first generation of Jesus' followers lived and died as Jews.
3. The Pharisees were not self-righteous bloviators.
The same old caricature of Pharisees as “arrogant,” “haughty,” and legalistic pervades the book. There is biblical support for this view from the Gospels, but O’Reilly and Dugard claim to be writing history and separating ”myth” from “fiction.”
For the past 30 years, scholarship on the Pharisees has shown that the Pharisees were not hyper-legalistic hypocrites. To make things worse, the authors seem to think that John the Baptist told the Pharisees either to burn or be condemned to hell (a rather peculiar reading of Luke 3:17).
The irony here is that our modern stereotypes of the Pharisees are grounded in Protestant critiques of Catholicism. Protestant Reformers saw Catholics as just like the biblical Pharisees, championing faith through works, and lumped the two groups together as legalizers and hypocrites. O’Reilly and Dugard, being Catholic, are actually stereotyping themselves.
4. Jesus was/wasn’t political
Any follower of Internet memes knows that Jesus can be made to say anything. O’Reilly has vacillated between saying (on his television show "The O’Reilly Factor") that Jesus was not political and arguing in his book that Jesus died to interrupt the revenue stream from the Temple and Rome and that "Jews everywhere long for the coming of a messiah ... [because] Rome will be defeated and their lives will be free of taxation and want."
Even though there’s no evidence for a direct financial link between the Temple and Rome, there’s no doubt that Jesus advocated for the poor. But O’Reilly needs to make up his mind. Is Jesus the man of the people seeking to liberate the oppressed from a heavy tax burden, or is he a peaceful man of God just trying to make a difference?
5. History isn’t just a word, it’s a discipline
O’Reilly acknowledges (correctly) that it’s difficult to look past the agendas of his sources and separate the myth from the history.
Historians prefer early sources and events that are documented in multiple (preferably independent) sources. O’Reilly puts all of this aside and cherry-picks episodes from whichever Gospel version he seems to prefer.
He will sometimes omit stories if they seem historically implausible, but he doesn’t do this consistently. He omits Jesus' words, from the Gospel of Luke, as he is being crucified: “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” In his CBS interview he explained that it was impossible for people to speak audibly while they were crucified. Fair enough; but then why does he include Jesus’s final words from the Gospel of John: “It is finished”? Is there something about the word “forgiveness” that sticks in the throat?
Apart from the methodological problems, the entire book is written in the style of a novel, not a history book. We hear the thoughts of Herod as he orders the execution of the male children of Bethlehem, for instance. It’s entertaining, but it’s historical fan fiction, not history.
Editor’s Note: Candida Moss is a professor of New Testament and early Christianity at the University of Notre Dame and author of The Myth of Persecution.
Paul was the Christian par excellance, if one considers Christianity to be what was left standing (Paul's network of churches) after the mother Church in Jerusalem was sacked by Rome in 70 AD.
DeleteSounds eminently reasonable.
DeleteI think the lady's comments about the Pharisees interesting.

Hebrew for Christians
ReplyDeleteIn our Torah portion for this week (i.e., Lekh Lekha) Abram is called ha-ivri (הָעִבְרִי) - “the Hebrew,” a term that means “one who has crossed over” (עָבַר) from another place. Rashi identifies this “other place” as Ur of the Chaldees (אוּר כַּשְׂדִים), located east of the Euphrates River, though the midrash (Genesis Rabbah) symbolically identifies it as the realm of idolatry: “The whole world ...stood on one side, but Abram crossed over to the other.” Abram separated himself from a world steeped in idolatry and polytheism by worshiping the One LORD God who is the sole Creator of all things.... Understood in this way, being “Hebrew” means being regarded as an “other,” a “stranger,” or an “outsider” to idolatrous world culture. Similarly, all those who "cross over" from the realm of death to life because of Yeshua our Savior are rightly called “Hebrews” (John 5:24).
Call me a Hebrew, I guess.(?)
Not to take anything away from the Amish.
DeleteI live in close proximity to alot of Amish folks.
Good people as far as I can tell. I haven't lived here very long though.
The maple syrup is rather expensive.
They are hard to see at night while driving as their buggies are painted black.
Guess not.
DeleteI'd call you a "christos" a follower of Christ.
There is neither Jew nor Gentile in the body of Christ, Galatians.
No need to lift or steal another's people's identity, be strong with your own.
I'd call you a "christos" a follower of Christ.
DeleteGood enough for me.
They ought to have those buggies lit up at night like an eighteen wheeler.
ReplyDeletehow about non-electrical reflective tape?
DeleteThey do have one of those reflective triangle symbols on the back but just a lantern in the front.
DeleteYes, I remember the lanterns and the triangle. Tape up the whole buggy. I'm surprised the state allows them on the roads at night.
DeleteFranz Rosenzweig (STAR OF REDEMPTION, 1930) would champion Nietzsche not on matters of belief but because Nietzsche had forever changed how philosophy would be understood, and it was the tragedy of Nietzsche’s life that his innovation would assume its place in the evolution of the conscious mind.
ReplyDelete“Since all time poets had spoken of life and their own soul. But not philosophers. And saints had always lived their life and that of their own soul. But once again, not philosophers. Yet here there arrived a man who knew his life and his soul like a poet and obeyed their voice like a saint, and yet he was a philosopher. It almost doesn’t matter today what he philosophized about…Thus man – no! not a man, an entirely specific man became a power dominating philosophy – no!, his philosophy…
Philosophy had thought it could take hold of man, including man as ‘personality’, in ethics. But that was an impossible aspiration…every ethics ended by emerging again in a doctrine of the community that forms a part of being…
The history of philosophy had never yet seen an atheism like that of Nietzsche. Nietzsche is the first thinker who – not negates God--but in the really proper theological use of the word: ‘refutes’ him. More precisely: he curses him. ..It is not God’s being, but God’s freedom that leads him to protect himself in this way…like the metalogical before, the metaethical repels the metaphysical and precisely through this makes it visible as divine ‘personality’, as unity—and not as one like the human personality…”
After three readings, well, yes, perhaps.....
