Nostalgic memories of a day when the US Congress was making new laws about Mexican migrant workers.

Historical Highlights

Four Puerto Rican nationalists opened fire onto the House Floor
March 01, 1954

Four Puerto Rican nationalists, armed with handguns, opened fire onto the House Floor from the back row of the south gallery. At the time, the House was voting on a measure to re-authorize a program allowing migrant Mexican farm workers to work in the country. Numerous Representatives and staff were present, with Speaker Joe Martin presiding over the roll call. In the fusillade, five Representatives were wounded—Alvin Bentley of Michigan, Ben Jensen of Iowa, Clifford Davis of Tennessee, George Fallon of Maryland, and Kenneth Roberts of Alabama. All five survived, although Bentley was critically wounded. Gallery visitors and police quickly subdued the nationalists; later, they were tried and sentenced to long prison terms. Future Representatives Bill Emerson of Missouri and Paul Kanjorski of Pennsylvania were among a group of Pages who helped to evacuate wounded Members on stretchers to waiting ambulances on the East Front. Bill Goodwin, a House Page who also lent assistance after the shooting, later recalled the fateful day. “That’s something you just don’t forget,” Goodwin remarked. “To this day, I can still hear those bullets going phht-dut, phht-dut alongside of me, those two bullets that one landed above Bill Emerson, and one alongside Bill Emerson, which was just eight feet away from me, to my right. I can still hear those bullets hitting that mahogany wall. Phht-dut, you know? What a sound. And the thing is, I saw that it was a gun, you know? I saw it right from the start of it. Saw the guy stand up.”

  1. White Americans became the minority in three Texas counties last year, according to new census data underscoring the rapid growth of the Hispanic population in the US as Congress wrestles with an immigration reform bill that could influence voters for years to come.
More than 11 per cent of the US’s 3,143 counties were “majority-minority” by the middle of last year, with six of them moving into the category over the previous 12 months, the US Census Bureau said on Thursday.

These included the counties of Bell, Hockley and Terrell in Texas, a state that has long been solidly Republican but is becoming increasingly Democratic as the Hispanic population, which tends to back it, grows.

Texas is already “majority-minority” and Hispanics are expected to become the largest ethnic group in the state by 2020.

This has the potential to up-end American politics. Already, major Democratic donors are setting their sights on the Lone Star state amid expectations that it might be up for grabs as early as the 2016 presidential election because of its rapidly changing demographics.

HONG KONG — After several days of relative silence on the issue, Chinese state media Thursday highlighted revelations that the United States government was engaged in widespread monitoring of Internet and telephone communications, carrying reports suggesting the disclosures could damage U.S.-Chinese relations.

The reports in state media are the closest thing to an official Chinese response to the revelations, which have come at an uncomfortable time for U.S. officials, just after President Obama pressed for Beijing’s cooperation in curtailing Chinese cyberspying. While Chinese government officials have refrained from directly criticizing the United States on the disclosures, the state media typically serve as a proxy for their views.

  4. Syran deaths in their civil war have reached almost 20% of the number of deaths the US suffered under Lincoln during the US Civil War. We cannot tolerate Assad repeating the deed and record of the greatest US president in body counts while trying to defeat the rebellion.

Almost 93,000 people were killed in Syria’s conflict by the end of April this year, but the true number could be “potentially much higher”, the United Nations human rights office says.

The exact figure released on Thursday - 92,901 people - is much higher than the UN's last death toll back in January of 59,000 people.

"The constant flow of killings continues at shockingly high levels," said Navi Pillay, the UN high commissioner for human rights. "This is most likely a minimum casualty figure. The true number of those killed is potentially much higher."

An average of more than 5,000 people have been killed every month since last July, while rural Damascus and Aleppo have recorded the highest tolls since November, the report said in its latest study compiling documented deaths.

Among the victims were at least 6,561 children, including 1,729 children younger than 10.

Al Jazeera's diplomatic editor James Bays, reporting from the UN headquarters in New York, described the figures as "staggering".

The UN has not had much access to Syria, and therefore has been unable to count bodies. Instead, the body did a statistical survey.

"They have gone through sources which had the names, dates and locations [of those killed]," our correspondent said, adding that the UN acknowleges it has "underreported the number of deaths".

    Rebel-led mass killing

Meanwhile, Syrian rebels reportedly killed at least 60 people, including civilians government loyalists, in a battle in Halta, a Sunni-majority village in the country's east, activists said.

The fighting over the past few days targetted members of the Shia community, highlighting the increasingly sectarian nature of the country's civil war.

The opposition fighters reportedly stormed and burned civilian homes in the village in the eastern Deir Azzor province.

The attack is said to be in retaliation for an earlier assault by Shias from Hatla that killed four opposition fighters.

A Syrian government official denounced the attack on the Shia-section of the Sunni-majority Hatla village as a "massacre" of civilians, the Associated Press news agency reported on Thursday.

A video posted online by rebels on Tuesday, entitled "The storming and cleansing of Hatla", showed dozens of fighters carrying black flags celebrating and firing guns in the streets of a small town as smoke curled above several buildings.

And we don't know for sure where he was born, or who was his real biological father, though we know he was mentored by Frank Marshal Davis and one of his books was written by a cop killer and terrorist.

Terrance Brown, 40, is on trial in South Florida for allegedly conspiring with four other men to hijack armored trucks delivering cash to banks in 2010. All have pleaded not guilty. But now Brown has come up with a unique defense: he wants the National Security Agency to turn over his phone records to the court to demonstrate his innocence.

The case, which is taking place in federal court, involves phone records – the FBI and prosecutors have been using cellphone records to demonstrate the men’s locations near the robbery attempts. The prosecution said that it was unable to get cellphone records from the time before September 2010 because the phone carrier had destroyed the records.

    147116286-order-requiring-response-re-fisa-records -

But Brown has new hope: his lawyer, Marshall Dore Louis, filed documents requesting NSA documents showing phone location records for Brown’s cellphones on the night of one of the robberies. “The president of the United States has recognized this program has been ongoing since 2006,” wrote Louis, “to gather the phone numbers [and related information] of everybody including my client in 2010.”

The judge, Robin Rosenbaum, gave the prosecutors a few weeks to respond. “There are security procedures that must be followed,” said Assistant US Attorney Michael Walleisa. One prosecutor, Michael Gilfarb, said that the information might not be relevant, depending on whether Brown carried his phone that night, given the fact that Brown’s wife said he didn’t have a cellphone at that time.

  13. Oh yes, the shit birds in DC and all the usual suspects, in full knowledge about the utter stupidity and ignorance of the US masses, are indeed playing they dreaded sarin card. Look at the numbers in the following:

WASHINGTON— U.S. and European officials have determined that the Syrian government has deployed chemical weapons against Syrian rebels, the White House has confirmed.

The White House notified lawmakers on Thursday that they have determined chemical weapons have been used before announcing the findings to the press.

The White House previously acknowledged that chemical weapons had been likely deployed, but they needed further confirmation. Obama had called the potential use of chemical weapons by Syrian President Bashar Assad a "red line" that would spur further action by the U.S.

The president "has said the use of chemical weapons would change his calculus and it has," said Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes.

The intelligence community estimates that 100 to 150 people have died from detected chemical weapons attacks in Syria to date, a small fraction of the more than 90,000 that have been killed in the two-year-old civil war. The U.S. assessment is based on laboratory analysis of physiological samples obtained from a number of individuals, which revealed exposure to sarin.

Earlier in a speech on the Senate floor, Sen. John McCain suggested that Obama has already decided to arm the rebels.

  15. Here is real criminal use of chemical warfare

Cancer and Birth Defects in Iraq: The Nuclear Legacy

May 21, 2013 — Ten years after the Iraq war of 2003 a team of scientists based in Mosul, northern Iraq, have detected high levels of uranium contamination in soil samples at three sites in the province of Nineveh which, coupled with dramatically increasing rates of childhood cancers and birth defects at local hospitals, highlight the ongoing legacy of modern warfare to civilians in conflict zones.

The radioactive element uranium is widely dispersed throughout Earth's crust and is much sought after as a fuel for nuclear power plants and for use in weapons. Depleted uranium (DU), commonly used in modern munitions such as defensive armour plating and armour-piercing projectiles, is 40 per cent less radioactive than natural uranium, but remains a significant and controversial danger to human health.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) sets a maximum uranium exposure of 1 millisievert (mSv) per year for the general public, but environmental scientists at the University of Mosul and the Institute of Forest Ecology, Universitaet für Bodenkultur (BOKU), Vienna, Austria, led by Riyad Abdullah Fathi have measured significant levels of uranium in soil samples from three sites in the province of Nineveh in the north of Iraq. Writing in the journal Medicine, Conflict and Survival, Fathi and colleagues link their findings with dramatic increases in cancers reported to the Mosul Cancer Registry and the Iraqi national cancer registry (which began collecting data in 1975).

They conclude that: “The Gulf Wars of 1991 and 2003 left a legacy of pollution with DU in many regions of Iraq. The effects of these munitions may be affecting the general health of Iraqi citizens, manifesting in an increase in cancers and birth defects.”

They also warn that, even though some of the contamination measured in this study is specifically linked to known sites, it can be easily spread widely in the air, soil and water, particularly as dust in windstorms.

Their report "Environmental pollution by depleted uranium in Iraq with special reference to Mosul and possible effects on cancer and birth defect rates" begins with a literature review that collates health-related data from a range of sources, including a report by the WHO (in 2003), which states that childhood cancers -- particularly leukemia -- are ten times higher in Iraq than in other industrialised countries.

  17. At least 100 people have been killed in government attacks over the past year, the White House says.

n contrast to more conservative U.S. statements, the Stanford/NYU report -- titled “Living Under Drones" -- offers starker figures published by The Bureau of Investigative Journalism, an independent organization based at City University in London.

"TBIJ reports that from June 2004 through mid-September 2012, available data indicate that drone strikes killed 2,562 - 3,325 people in Pakistan, of whom 474 - 881 were civilians, including 176 children. TBIJ reports that these strikes also injured an additional 1,228 - 1,362 individuals," according to the Stanford/NYU study.

  18. When the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) meets next week at a summit in Chicago, expect a lot of self-congratulatory rhetoric about the alliance’s bombing campaign in Libya last year. Backed by a U.N. Security Council mandate, NATO charged in, citing its “responsibility to protect” civilians threatened by the bloody rampages of the late Libyan tyrant Muammar Gaddafi. The near 10,000 sorties launched by NATO strike craft helped push back Gaddafi’s forces; targeted attacks on the regime’s arsenals and defenses allowed rebel fighters on the ground to eventually sweep into Tripoli and bring down Gaddafi. Not long thereafter, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy and British Prime Minister David Cameron were greeted raucously as heroes in Tripoli and Benghazi.

With the endgame in Afghanistan dragging along and financial woes dogging many NATO member states, the relative success of the Libya mission lets the grand old alliance feel good about itself. But then read this question posed recently by a Libyan: “I just need an answer from NATO: Why did you destroy my home and kill my family?”

  21. The Iraqi military announced today that it arrested five members of an al Qaeda cell that was seeking to manufacture chemical weapons, including sarin nerve gas, and plotting to conduct attacks within Iraq, Europe, and North America.

The Defense Ministry announced that it arrested the five members of the al Qaeda in Iraq cell and raided two factories in Baghdad that were used to research and manufacture the deadly chemical agents. The arrests were made with the help of undisclosed foreign intelligence services.

The chemical weapons cell was seeking to produce sarin as well as mustard blistering agents. The group had acquired some of the precursor chemicals as well as the formulas needed to manufacture the agents.

According to the Defense Ministry's spokesman, the cell was plotting to use remotely-piloted model aircraft to spray some of the chemical weapons sometime next week as Shia mourners commemorated the death of Imam Kadhum.

The cell also had contacts with a network that would have attempted to smuggle the chemical weapons for use in the United States, Canada, and Europe, the Defense Ministry said.

The report of an al Qaeda cell in possession of chemical agents is the second from the Middle East in the past two days. Yesterday, Turkish newspapers reported that members of an Al Nusrah Front cell were in possession of sarin gas, and were planning to conduct attacks at the Incirlik Air Base in Adana, and in Gaziantep, a city near Turkey's border with Syria. Other reports said that the Al Nusrah Front cell was planning to use the deadly nerve gas inside Syria. The reports have not been confirmed by the Turkish government.

  26. Flight from Congress over ObamaCare’s massive cost hikes?

posted at 12:01 pm on June 13, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

When Congress debated ObamaCare, pressure from critics forced lawmakers to include themselves under its mandates, rather than keep their current “Cadillac plans” that they proposed to tax out of existence for everyone else. That decision will impact current members starting at the end of this year, as they have to find insurance on the ObamaCare markets just like everyone else. Now, suddenly, ObamaCare looks a lot less attractive — and some of them may retire to avoid it (via Instapundit, who notes that this is doing what the term-limits movement couldn’t):

Dozens of lawmakers and aides are so afraid that their health insurance premiums will skyrocket next year thanks to Obamacare that they are thinking about retiring early or just quitting.....

It seems nutty to think that Bill Clinton would want to do anything that might piss Obama off, right now (or, any time before shrillary is elected President.

    2. The second choice is the correct choice.

But, then, admittedly you are in good company, nobody else here does either, except myself. And WiO of course.

I think most of O is simply sunni muzzie operating in a strange environment. A commie sunni, not very bright, wicked really, and full of himself......'splains a lot.

  33. Does anyone else think that we're being treated with contempt by our Governments? I mean, if chemical weapons are being used in Syria, that is awful, but then why don't make the evidence clear? Whether that would be reason or not to intervene is another issue, but if they are telling us that this is a "red line", then surely they should produce the evidence to the public for dissection.
Why are they keeping it hidden? Why can't we see it? Why do I feel like the people we elect don't represent us AT ALL?!?! I'm an adult. I can read. Show me the documentation. I'm so sick of these fuckers.

Ruf says Curveball is going to show up and 'splain it all. What can we do but trust?

I am still waiting for Curveball's explanation of Benghazi too. It will come.

      Just you wait.....

    5. IRS pushed it off the front page, but the facts are still the same, and it is in the wings somewhere, along with the AP and Fast and Furious and other sundry 'scandals'.

Having one scandal pushed off the front page by another scandal that effects all people isn't really something to get all cocky about, Uncle Rufus.
